Simultaneous removal of binary dye from textile effluent using cobalt ferrite-alginate nanocomposite: Performance and mechanism

Titanium doped cobalt ferrite fabricated graphene oxide nanocomposite for efficient photocatalytic and antibacterial activities

Dyes and microbes are the main sources of water pollution and their treatment with titanium doped cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CoTixFe2-xO4 NPs) is highly challenging due to the recombination ability of their electron-hole pairs which could be mitigated by making their composite with graphene oxide (GO). In the present study, titanium doped cobalt ferrite was fabricated on GO (CoTi0.2Fe1.8O4/GO NC) via the facile ultrasonication method and its confirmation was done by various analytical studies. Homogeneous dispersion of spherical CoTi0.2Fe1.8O4 NPs on the GO surface was realized by SEM analysis. Excellent crystallinity was corroborated by XRD while a Zeta Potential value -21.52 mV depicted exceptional stability. The photocatalytic power of CoTi0.2Fe1.8O/GO NC against Congo Red (CR) dye showed 91% degradation efficiency after 120 min visible light irradiation under optimum conditions of pH 9 and dye concentration 1 mg L-1 which was reasonably higher as compared to bare CoTi0.2Fe1.8O NPs (78% degradation efficiency). The improved photocatalytic performance is accredited to its narrow bandgap value (1.07 eV) and enhanced charge separation as indicated by the Tauc plot and Photoluminescence analysis, respectively. Additionally, CoTi0.2Fe1.8O/GO NC could be readily regenerated and reused five times with only ∼2% performance loss. Meanwhile, MICs of CoTi0.2Fe1.8O4/GO NC against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus were 0.046 and 0.093 mg mL-1 while MBCs were 0.093 and 0.187 mg mL-1, respectively. Thereby, optimized NC can open new avenues for the degradation of dyes from polluted water besides acting as a promising antimicrobial agent by rupturing the cell walls of pathogens.

Natural Polymers and Their Nanocomposites Used for Environmental Applications

The aim of this review is to bring together the main natural polymer applications for environmental remediation, as a class of nexus materials with advanced properties that offer the opportunity of integration in single or simultaneous decontamination processes. By identifying the main natural polymers derived from agro-industrial sources or monomers converted by biotechnology into sustainable polymers, the paper offers the main performances identified in the literature for: (i) the treatment of water contaminated with heavy metals and emerging pollutants such as dyes and organics, (ii) the decontamination and remediation of soils, and (iii) the reduction in the number of suspended solids of a particulate matter (PM) type in the atmosphere. Because nanotechnology offers new horizons in materials science, nanocomposite tunable polymers are also studied and presented as promising materials in the context of developing sustainable and integrated products in society to ensure quality of life. As a class of future smart materials, the natural polymers and their nanocomposites are obtained from renewable resources, which are inexpensive materials with high surface area, porosity, and high adsorption properties due to their various functional groups. The information gathered in this review paper is based on the publications in the field from the last two decades. The future perspectives of these fascinating materials should take into account the scale-up, the toxicity of nanoparticles, and the competition with food production, as well as the environmental regulations.

Biobased composites from agro-industrial wastes and by-products

The greater awareness of non-renewable natural resources preservation needs has led to the development of more ecological high-performance polymeric materials with new functionalities. In this regard, biobased composites are considered interesting options, especially those obtained from agro-industrial wastes and by-products. These are low-cost raw materials derived from renewable sources, which are mostly biodegradable and would otherwise typically be discarded. In this review, recent and innovative academic studies on composites obtained from biopolymers, natural fillers and active agents, as well as green-synthesized nanoparticles are presented. An in-depth discussion of biobased composites structures, properties, manufacture, and life-cycle assessment (LCA) is provided along with a wide up-to-date overview of the most recent works in the field with appropriate references. Potential uses of biobased composites from agri-food residues such as active and intelligent food packaging, agricultural inputs, tissue engineering, among others are described, considering that the specific characteristics of these materials should match the proposed application.

Nitrogen-Rich and Porous Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheet-Immobilized Palladium Nanoparticles as Highly Active and Recyclable Catalysts for the Reduction of Nitro Compounds and Degradation of Organic Dyes

In the present study, we have successfully synthesized nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) nanosheets by a simple direct thermal polymerization approach. The synthesized g-C₃N₄ nanosheets were exfoliated using HCl to make their surface a few nanometers thick. The ultrathin surface was achieved by simply mixing g-C₃N₄ in 3 M HCl. After that, palladium nanoparticles were uniformly immobilized on the surface of g-C₃N₄. The synthesized materials were characterized by various physiochemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Information about morphology and size was obtained through transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter were determined using nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. The prepared material (Pd/g-C₃N₄) was utilized as an efficient catalyst for the reduction of hazardous nitroarenes and degradation of organic dyes. The catalyst could be easily recovered through centrifugation and then could be reused multiple times for the further catalytic cycles with a little loss in its catalytic activity. The work presented here illustrates the sustainable anchoring of metal nanoparticles over the surface of nitrogen-rich g-C₃N₄ nanosheets and could be utilized for different types of catalytic reactions.

Simultaneous Adsorption of Malachite Green and Methylene Blue Dyes in a Fixed-Bed Column Using Poly(Acrylonitrile-Co-Acrylic Acid) Modified with Thiourea

Proper remediation of aquatic environments contaminated by toxic organic dyes has become a research focus globally for environmental and chemical engineers. This study evaluates the adsorption potential of a polymer-based adsorbent, thiourea-modified poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (T-PAA) adsorbent, for the simultaneous uptake of malachite green (MG) and methylene blue (MB) dye ions from binary system in a continuous flow adsorption column. The influence of inlet dye concentrations, pH, flow rate, and adsorbent bed depth on adsorption process were investigated, and the breakthrough curves obtained experimentally. Results revealed that the sorption capacity of the T-PAA for MG and MB increase at high pH, concentration and bed-depth. Thomas, Bohart-Adams, and Yoon-Nelson models constants were calculated to describe MG and MB adsorption. It was found that the three dynamic models perfectly simulate the adsorption rate and behavior of cationic dyes entrapment. Finally, T-PAA adsorbent demonstrated good cyclic stability. It can be regenerated seven times (or cycles) with no significant loss in adsorption potential. Overall, the excellent sorption capacity and multiple usage make T-PAA polymer an attractive adsorbent materials for treatment of multicomponent dye bearing effluent in a fixed-bed column system.

Bioremediation of potentially toxic metal and reactive dye-contaminated water by pristine and modified Chlorella vulgaris

This is the first study on the biosorption of Cu²⁺ and reactive yellow 145 (RY145) dye by citric acid (CA), NaOH, and heat-treated Chlorella vulgaris (Cv). Influence of contact time, initial adsorptive concentration, and biomass dosage on the biosorption process was explored. The biosorption kinetics and isotherm were comprehensively investigated as well. The Fourier transform infrared analysis proved the successful insertion of carbonyl groups on Cv surface by CA modification and the intensification of all Cv functional groups by heat treatment. CA modified Cv was the best biosorbent for RY145, 0.5 g/L removes 97% of 10 mg/L solution (pH_i 2) in 40 min. The biosorption was favorable, occurred via the formation of a monolayer of RY145 on the homogenous surface of CA-modified Cv and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics. On the other hand, heat-treated Cv was the best biosorbent for Cu²⁺, 0.5 g/L removes 92% of 10 mg/L solution (pH_i 5) in 5 min. The biosorption of Cu²⁺ on heat-treated Cv was complex and involves more than one mechanism. The Langmuir theoretical monolayer saturation capacity of RY145 on CA-modified Cv was comparable to other biosorbents, while that of Cu²⁺ on heat-treated Cv was drastically superior.

Preparation of Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate (EGDMA)-Based Terpolymer as Potential Sorbents for Pharmaceuticals Adsorption

Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) is used as a crosslinker in poly(acrylonitrile (AN)-co-vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC)) to investigate the effect of long-chain crosslinker to the porosity of the terpolymer system. Poly(AN-co-EGDMA-co-VBC) is synthesized by using precipitation polymerization method and further hypercrosslinked by Friedel-Crafts reaction. FT-IR spectra of poly(AN-co-EGDMA-co-VBC) show that the absorption bands at ~1290 cm-1 that are assigned to the C-Cl vibrations are almost disappeared in hypercrosslinked (HXL) poly(AN-co-EGDMA-co-VBC) polymers, confirming that the hypercrosslinking reaction is successful. SEM images show that the morphologies of the polymers are retained through the hypercrosslinking reactions. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis shows that hypercrosslinked polymers had a specific surface area up to 59 m2·g-1. The preliminary performance of the terpolymer adsorbent to capture polar analyte is evaluated by adsorbing salicylic acid and mefenamic acid from aqueous solution in a batch system. The maximum adsorption capacity of salicylic acid and mefenamic acid were up to 416.7 mg·g-1 and 625 mg·g-1, respectively, and the adsorption kinetic data obeyed pseudo-second-order rate equation.

Concurrent adsorption of cationic and anionic dyes from environmental water on amine functionalized carbon

Amine functionalized carbon (AFC) was synthesized from raw oil fly ash and later utilized it for simultaneous removal of methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) pollutant dyes from aqueous medium. AFC was analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to examine its morphology, porosity and structural characteristics, respectively. The effect of various process parameters like mixing time, pollutant concentration, adsorbent dose, initial solution pH, and temperature of the medium were investigated for dye removal process. The experimental findings showed that the percentage removal of Rh6G was higher than MO and both dyes showed synergism during the adsorption from binary dye solution. Pseudo-second-order model was most appropriate model for both dyes and thermodynamic parameters showed that the dyes removal process was endothermic in nature. Among various isotherm models, Hill and Toth isotherms best explain the adsorption of Rh6G and MO from binary dye solution.

Environmental perspectives of interfacially active and magnetically recoverable composite materials - A review

Aquatic ecosystem contaminated with toxic pollutants and heavy metals due to the rapid growth of industrialization has become a top-priority global concern exhibiting highly adverse effects on human health and the environment. Many treatment techniques have been envisioned for the removal of these toxic contaminants from the aqueous environment. Among these techniques, magnetic separation has attracted burgeoning research attention owing to its simplicity, eco-friendly nature, large surface area, electron mobility, and excellent performance for removing water contaminants. In particular, interfacial active nanoparticles and nanocomposites with unique structures and magnetic properties are considered as ideal provides candidates in material science for next-generation water treatment. This review gives an insight into current research activities associated with the synthesis strategies and applications of interfacially active and magnetically responsive nanomaterials and nanocomposites for sustainable purification processes. In the first half, various synthesis routes for magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles development and the corresponding formation mechanism are summarized. In the second half, we reviewed the magnetic and wettability properties of interfacially active and magnetically responsive nanocomposites and their environmental applications including oil-water separation, removal of hazardous dye-based pollutants and potentially toxic heavy metals. Finally, the review is wrapped up with major concluding remarks and future perspectives of these magnetic nanoscale composite materials for sustainable wastewater remediation.

Adsorptive Removal of Methylene Blue from Aquatic Environments Using Thiourea-Modified Poly(Acrylonitrile-co-Acrylic Acid)

The paper evaluates the adsorptive potential of thiourea-modified poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid), (TA-poly(AN-co-AA)) for the uptake of cationic methylene blue (MB) from aquatic environments via a batch system. TA-poly(AN-co-AA) polymer was synthesized through redox polymerization and modified with thiourea (TA) where thioamide groups were introduced to the surface. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), CHNS and Zetasizer were used to characterize the physico-chemical and morphological properties of prepared TA-poly(AN-co-AA). Afterwards, it was confirmed that incorporation of thioamide groups was successful. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium adsorption data were best described, respectively, by a pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model. Thermodynamic analysis showed the exothermic and spontaneous nature of MB uptake by TA-poly(AN-co-AA). The developed TA-poly(AN-co-AA) polymer demonstrated efficient separation of MB dye from the aqueous solution and maintained maximum adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. The findings of this study suggested that synthesized TA-poly(AN-co-AA) can be applied successfully to remove cationic dyes from aquatic environments.
