Green synthesis of zinc ferrite nanoparticles in Limonia acidissima juice: Characterization and their application as photocatalytic and antibacterial activities

Harnessing solar power for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of coloured pollutants using novel Mg-doped-ZnFe2O4/S@g-C3N4 heterojunction: A facile hydrothermal synthesis approach

The ability of heterogeneous photocatalysis to effectively remove organic pollutants from wastewater has shown great promise as a tool for environmental remediation. Pure zinc ferrites (ZnFe2O4) and magnesium-doped zinc ferrites (Mg@ZnFe2O4) with variable percentages of Mg (0.5, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 mol%) were synthesized via hydrothermal route and their photocatalytic activity was checked against methylene blue (MB) taken as a model dye. FTIR, XPS, BET, PL, XRD, TEM, and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used for the identification and morphological characterization of the prepared nanoparticles (NPs) and nanocomposites (NCs). The 7% Mg@ZnFe2O4 NPs demonstrated excellent degradation against MB under sunlight. The 7% Mg@ZnFe2O4 NPs were integrated with diverse contents (10, 50, 30, and 70 wt.%) of S@g-C3N4 to develop NCs with better activity. When the NCs were tested to degrade MB dye, it was revealed that the 7%Mg@ZnFe2O4/S@g-C3N4 NCs were more effective at utilizing solar energy than the other NPs and NCs. The synergistic effect of the interface formed between Mg@ZnFe2O4 and S@g-C3N4 was primarily responsible for the boosted photocatalytic capability of the NCs. The fabricated NCs may function as an effective new photocatalyst to remove organic dyes from wastewater.

Immobilized lipase enzyme on green synthesized magnetic nanoparticles using Psidium guava leaves for dye degradation and antimicrobial activities

Zinc ferrite nanoparticles (ZnF NPs) were synthesized by a green method using Psidium guava Leaves extract and characterized via structural and optical properties. The surface of ZnF NPs was stabilized with citric acid (CA) by a direct addition method to obtain (ZnF-CA NPs), and then lipase (LP) enzyme was immobilized on ZnF-CA NPs to obtain a modified ZnF-CA-LP nanocomposite (NCs). The prepared sample's photocatalytic activity against Methylene blue dye (MB) was determined. The antioxidant activity of ZnF-CA-LP NCs was measured using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) as a source of free radicals. In addition, the antibacterial and antibiofilm capabilities of these substances were investigated by testing them against gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus ATCC 25923) and gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli ATCC 25922) bacterial strains. The synthesized ZnF NPs were discovered to be situated at the core of the material, as determined by XRD, HRTEM, and SEM investigations, while the CA and lipase enzymes were coated in this core. The ZnF-CA-LP NCs crystallite size was around 35.0 nm at the (311) plane. Results obtained suggested that 0.01 g of ZnF-CA-LP NCs achieved 96.0% removal of 5.0 ppm of MB at pH 9.0. In-vitro zone of inhibition (ZOI) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results verified that ZnF-CA-LP NCs exhibited its encouraged antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli (20.0 ± 0.512, and 27.0 ± 0.651 mm ZOI, respectively) & (1.25, and 0.625 μg/ml MIC, respectively). ZnF-CA-LP NPs showed antibiofilm percentage against S. aureus (88.4%) and E. coli (96.6%). Hence, ZnF-CA-LP NCs are promising for potential applications in environmental and biomedical uses.

Green construction of biochar@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite for highly efficient photocatalytic remediation of pesticides from agriculture wastewater

The world's attention is drawn to the widespread ingestion, toxicity, and bioaccumulation of the Atrazine (AT) and Endosulfan (ES). Pesticides have been proven to have endocrine-disrupting, genotoxic, and persistent characteristics. In this work, the structural design of green synthesized NiFe2O4 is incorporated in rice husk biochar to form BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite. Powder X-ray diffraction and microscopic analysis confirmed the semi-crystalline nature of BC@NiFe2O4 reduced due to the incorporation of amorphous BC. The green BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite degraded AT and ES up to 98 % and 92 %, respectively. The maximum degradation achieved by BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite with minimum pollutants concentration (50 mg L-1) with 10 mg catalyst dose at acidic pH in natural sunlight because of the higher negative value of zeta potential (-26.4 mV) and lower band gap (2.5 eV). The degradation process involves first-order kinetics followed by initial Langmuir adsorption. The presence of various radical quenchers (t-BuOH, p-BZQ, Na2EDTA) has led to the conclusion that hydroxyl radicals play a significant role in the degradation of the toxic substances AT and ES. Additionally, a green-fabricated BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite has exhibited exceptional efficiency in degrading AT and ES pollutants in actual wastewater samples. Furthermore, this nanocomposite has demonstrated outstanding sustainability and cost-effectiveness, maintaining its effectiveness for up to eight cycles without a noticeable reduction in activity. In summary, due to its favorable surface characteristics, the environmentally friendly BC@NiFe2O4 nanocomposite holds excellent promise as a unique and potential photocatalyst for various industrial applications.

Emerging Trends in Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles for Biomedical and Environmental Applications

Over the last few decades, the application of nanoparticles (NPs) gained immense attention towards environmental and biomedical applications. NPs are ultra-small particles having size ranges from 1 to 100 nm. NPs loaded with therapeutic or imaging compounds have proved a versatile approach towards healthcare improvements. Among various inorganic NPs, zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) NPs are considered as non-toxic and having an improved drug delivery characteristics . Several studies have reported broader applications of ZnFe2O4 NPs for treating carcinoma and various infectious diseases. Additionally, these NPs are beneficial for reducing organic and inorganic environmental pollutants. This review discusses about various methods to fabricate ZnFe2O4 NPs and their physicochemical properties. Further, their biomedical and environmental applications have also been explored comprehensively.

Evaluation of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube-Silver Nanocomposite: A Fluorescence Spectroscopic Approach

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been extensively utilized in various fields due to their excellent physical and chemical properties. The green synthetic routes for the synthesis of AgNPs have been adopted to eliminate the impact of the chemicals over the environment. These methods are more cost-effective, eco-friendly and simple. The association of AgNPs on to the surface of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) produces nanocomposites with unique properties. This can be achieved by different methods such as covalent functionalization, non-covalent functionalization and so on. In the current study, AgNPs are synthesized by biochemical method and they are anchored on to the surface of functionalized MWCNTs is carried out via a non-covalent interaction. The fluorescence studies are done on the nanocomposites in the presence of a suitable external probe i.e., MB. Here fluorescence and UV-Visible spectroscopy are used.

Injectable, Antibacterial, and Hemostatic Tissue Sealant Hydrogels

Hemorrhage and bacterial infections are major hurdles in the management of life-threatening surgical wounds. Most bioadhesives for wound closure lack sufficient hemostatic and antibacterial properties. Furthermore, they suffer from weak sealing efficacy, particularly for stretchable organs, such as the lung and bladder. Accordingly, there is an unmet need for mechanically robust hemostatic sealants with simultaneous antibacterial effects. Here, an injectable, photocrosslinkable, and stretchable hydrogel sealant based on gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), supplemented with antibacterial zinc ferrite (ZF) nanoparticles and hemostatic silicate nanoplatelets (SNs) for rapid blood coagulation is nanoengineered. The hydrogel reduces the in vitro viability of Staphylococcus aureus by more than 90%. The addition of SNs (2% w/v) and ZF nanoparticles (1.5 mg mL-1 ) to GelMA (20% w/v) improves the burst pressure of perforated ex vivo porcine lungs by more than 40%. Such enhancement translated to ≈250% improvement in the tissue sealing capability compared with a commercial hemostatic sealant, Evicel. Furthermore, the hydrogels reduce bleeding by ≈50% in rat bleeding models. The nanoengineered hydrogel may open new translational opportunities for the effective sealing of complex wounds that require mechanical flexibility, infection management, and hemostasis.

One pot green synthesis of Al doped zinc ferrite nanoparticle decorated with reduced graphene oxide for photocatalytic remediation of organic pollutants: Green synthesis, kinetics, and photoactivity

The world is drawn to the widespread use, toxicity, and bioaccumulation of the Atrazine (AT) and Auramine O (AO). Pesticides and dyes also have endocrine disruptors, genotoxic and persistent properties. Therefore, the photodegradation of AT and AO in water was investigated. Herein, the structural design of Al-ZnFe2O4 incorporated in rGO nanocomposite has been synthesized via facile precipitation and green synthesis methodology. PXRD and microscopic analysis confirmed the reduced crystallinity nature of Al-ZnFe2O4 due to the incorporation of amorphous rGO. The green Al-ZnFe2O4@rGO nanocomposite (AT: 90%; AO: 95%) showed maximum degradation as compared to native nanoparticles with minimum pollutants concentration of 10 mg catalytic dose at neutral pH in sunlight irradiation due to negative zeta potential (-36.0 mV), higher surface area (163 m2g-1) and tailored band gap (2.1 eV). First-order kinetics followed by initial Langmuir adsorption constituted the degradation process. The presence of different radical quenchers (t-BuOH, p-BZQ, Na2EDTA) concluded that hydroxyl radical plays a significant role in the degradation of toxic AT and AO. Green fabricated Al-ZnFe2O4@rGO also showed excellent efficiency for the degradation of AT and AO pollutant in real wastewater sample. Nanocomposite demonstrated remarkable sustainability and cost-effectiveness by remaining effective for up to nine cycles without experiencing any appreciable activity reduction. Due to its favorable surface features, Al-ZnFe2O4@rGO nanocomposite made via green process is a unique and potential photocatalyst for industrial applications.

Green synthesis of nickel-doped magnesium ferrite nanoparticles via combustion for facile microwave-assisted optical and photocatalytic applications

NixMg1-xFe2O4(x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) nanoparticles were symphonized via combustion with microwave assistance in the presence of Tamarindus indica seeds extract as fuel. Nanoparticles nature, size, morphology, oxidation state, elemental composition, and optical and luminescence properties were analysed using PXRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX, and HRTEM with SAED, XPS, UV-Visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. PXRD analysis confirms that synthesized nanoparticles are spinel cubic and have a 17-18 nm average crystalline size. Tetrahedral and octahedral sites regarding stretching vibrations were confirmed by FTIR analysis. SEM and HRTEM data it is disclosed that the morphology of synthesized nanoparticles has nano flakes-like structure with sponge-like agglomeration. Elemental compositions of prepared nanoparticles were confirmed through EDX spectroscopy. XPS Spectroscopy confirmed and revealed transition, oxidation states, and elemental composition. The band gap and absorption phenomenon were disclosed using UV-visible spectroscopy, where the band gap declines (2.1, 2, 1.6, 1.8 eV), with increase in nickel NixMg1-xFe2O4(x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) doping. Photoluminescence intensity reduces with an incline in nickel doping, was confirmed and disclosed using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Dyes (Methylene blue and Rhodamine B) degradation activity was performed in the presence of NDMF nanoparticles as a photocatalyst, which disclosed that 98.1% of MB dye and 97.9% of RB dye were degraded in 0-120 min. Regarding initial dye concentration and catalyst load, 5 ppm was initiated as the ideal initial concentration for both RB and MB dyes. 50 mg catalyst dosage was found to be most effective for the degradation of MB and RB dyes. In comparison, pH studies revealed that photodegradation efficiency was higher in neutral (MB-98.1%, RB-97.9%) and basic (MB-99.6%, RB-99.3%) conditions than in acidic (MB-61.8%, RB-60.4%) conditions.

Potential antibacterial, antibiofilm, and photocatalytic performance of gamma-irradiated novel nanocomposite for enhanced disinfection applications with an investigated reaction mechanism

BACKGROUND

Water scarcity is now a global challenge due to the population growth and the limited amount of available potable water. In addition, modern industrialization, and microbial pathogenesis is resulting in water pollution on a large scale.

METHODS

In the present study, reusable Co0.5Ni0.5Fe2O4/SiO2/TiO2 composite matrix was incorporated with CdS NPs to develop an efficient photocatalyst, and antimicrobial agents for wastewater treatment, and disinfection purpose. The antibacterial performance of the gamma-irradiated samples was evaluated against various types of Gram-positive bacteria using ZOI, MIC, antibiofilm, and effect of UV-exposure. Antibacterial reaction mechanism was assessed by bacterial membrane leakage assay, and SEM imaging. In addition, their photocatalytic efficiency was tested against MB cationic dye as a typical water organic pollutant.

RESULTS

Our results showed that, the formed CdS NPs were uniformly distributed onto the surface of the nanocomposite matrix. While, the resulted CdS-based nanocomposite possessed an average particle size of nearly 90.6 nm. The antibacterial performance of the prepared nanocomposite was significantly increased after activation with gamma and UV irradiations. The improved antibacterial performance was mainly due to the synergistic effect of both TiO2 and CdS NPs; whereas, the highest photocatalytic efficiency of MB removal was exhibited in alkaline media due to the electrostatic attraction between the cationic MB and the negatively-charged samples. In addition, the constructed heterojunction enabled better charge separation and increased the lifetime of the photogenerated charge carriers.

CONCLUSION

Our results can pave the way towards the development of efficient photocatalysts for wastewater treatment and promising antibacterial agents for disinfection applications.

Development of zinc ferrite nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic performance for remediation of environmentally toxic pharmaceutical waste diclofenac sodium from wastewater

Diclofenac sodium is an anti-inflammatory drug commonly used to cure pain in various treatments. The remarkable potential of this pain-killer leads to its excessive use and, therefore, a persistent water contaminant. Its presence in aqueous bodies is hazardous for both humans and the environment because it causes the growth of harmful drug-resistant bacteria in water. Herein, we present a comparative study of the ZnO and ZnFe₂O₄ as photocatalysts for the degradation of diclofenac sodium, along with their structural and morphological studies. A simple co-precipitation method was used for the synthesis of ZnO and ZnFe₂O₄ and characterized by various analytical techniques. For instance, the UV-Vis study revealed the absorption maxima of ZnO at 320 nm, which was shifted to a longer wavelength region at 365 nm for zinc ferrite. The optical band gaps obtained from the Tauc plot indicated that the incorporation of iron has led to a decreased band gap of zinc ferrite (2.89 eV) than pure ZnO (3.14 eV). The metal-oxygen linkages shown by FTIR indicated the formation of desired ZnO and ZnFe₂O₄, which was further confirmed by XRD. It elucidated the typical hexagonal structure for ZnO and spinel cubic structure for ZnFe₂O₄ with an average crystallite of 31 nm and 44 nm for ZnO and ZnFe₂O₄, respectively. The micrographs obtained by SEM showed rough spherical particles of ZnO, whereas for ZnFe₂O₄ flower-like clustered particles were observed. The photocatalytic investigation against diclofenac sodium revealed the higher degradation efficiency of ZnFe₂O₄ (61.4%) in only 120 min, whereas ZnO degraded only 48.9% of the drug. Moreover, zinc ferrite has shown good recyclability and was stable up to five runs of photodegradation with a small loss (3.9%) of photocatalytic activity. The comparison of two catalysts has suggested the promising role of zinc ferrite in wastewater remediation to eliminate hazardous pharmaceuticals.

Novel ZnFe2O4/BC/ZnO photocatalyst for high-efficiency degradation of tetracycline under visible light irradiation

Developing broad-spectrum light reactions, effective charge separation, and easily recoverable photocatalysts were considered cost-effective pollution remediation methods. The ZnFe₂O₄/BC/ZnO composite was prepared to achieve these objectives, where biochar (BC) was used as a conductive channel and ZnFe₂O₄ as a magnetic substance. Among them, the 0.6-ZBO composite performed the best, with photocatalytic removal of tetracycline (TC) reaching 85.6%. The photocatalytic degradation rated constant of 0.6-ZBO composite was 23.36 × 10^-3 min^-1, which was 7.6, 4.1, and 2.5 times higher than that of ZnFe₂O₄/BC, ZnO, and ZnFe₂O₄/ZnO samples, respectively. According to several characterization data, it was demonstrated that successful Z-scheme heterojunctions were constructed between ZnFe₂O₄ and ZnO. The 0.6-ZBO complex increased the range of light absorption and strengthened the separation of electron-hole pairs, thus improving the redox ability of the complex. In the different water matrices, the stability of 0.6-ZBO was excellent and its ability to remove TC decreased slightly to about 11% after 5 cycles. This work provided a valuable approach to design a novel and efficient system for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater using magnetic biochar.

Metal nanoparticles produced by plants with antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a pathogenic bacteria that causes a variety of potentially fatal infections. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of S. aureus has made treatment even more difficult. In recent years, nanoparticles have been used as an alternative therapeutic agent for S. aureus infections. Among various methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles, the method utilizing plant extracts from different parts of a plant, such as root, stem, leaf, flower, seeds, etc. is gaining widespread usage. Phytochemicals present in plant extract are an inexpensive, eco-friendly, natural material that act as reducing and stabilization agent for the nanoparticle synthesis. The utilization of plant-fabricated nanoparticles against S. aureus is currently in trend. The current review discusses recent findings in the therapeutic application of phytofabricated metal-based nanoparticles against Staphylococcus aureus.

Spinel ferrites materials for sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process: A review

In the past decade, the sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have been increasingly investigated because of their excellent performance and ubiquity in the degradation of emerging contaminants. Generally, sulfate radicals can be generated by activating peroxodisulfate (PDS) or peroxymonosulfate (PMS). To date, spinel ferrites (SF) materials have been greatly favored by researchers in activating PMS/PDS for their capability and unique superiorities. This article reviewed the recent advances in various pure SF, modified SF, and SF composites for PDS/PMS activation. In addition, synthesis methods, mechanisms, and potential applications of SF-based SR-AOPs were also examined and discussed in detail. Finally, we present future research directions and challenges for the application of SF materials in SR-AOPs.

Antimicrobial, and Antibiofilm Activities of Silver Doped Hydroxyapatite: A Novel Bioceramic Material for Dental Filling

Even though hydroxyapatite (HA) is the most common biocompatible material; it has limited antibacterial resistance. HA experiences a tailor-made structure depending on the desired applications. In this regard, silver (Ag) is of particular interest to inhibit wide spectrum of pathogenic bacteria and other microorganisms. Silver doped hydroxyapatite (Ag-HA) was developed via wet co-precipitation with subsequent hydrothermal processing to hinder the growth and multiplication of pathogenic microbes. Ag-HA demonstrated mono-dispersed nano-rods of 70 nm length and 7 nm diameters. Even though silver dopant induced stresses within the crystal lattice; Ag-HA maintained the crystallographic structure of HA with no change. Ag-HA nanocomposite demonstrated Ca/P value of 1.238 compared with 1.402 for virgin HA via XPS spectroscopy. The reduction of Ca/P value was correlated to the partial replacement of Ca+2 with Ag+1; Silver content was reported to be of 1 atomic %. Elemental mapping using EDAX confirmed uniform dispersion of silver ion within HA lattice. Antimicrobial results indicated that, Ag-HA nanocomposite demonstrated the most potent zone of inhibition (ZOI) against Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. Antibiofilm results indicated that Ag-HA nanocomposite at 10.0 µg/mL, experienced the highest percentage for S. aureus and C. albicans of 96.09%, and 77.77%, respectively. Ag-HA nanocomposite demonstrated an excellent disinfectant agent once it had excited by UV light. In growth curve assay, the OD600 value of Ag- HA were lower, showing the repression impact on the growth of S. aureus. It was observed that the quantity of cellular protein discharged from S. aureus is directly proportional to the concentration of Ag-HA, which proves the antibacterial characteristics of the Ag-HA nanocomposite, and explains the creation of holes in the bacterial membrane producing the oozing out of the proteins from the S. aureus cytoplasm. Ag-HA nanocomposite achieved the complete lysis of the bacterial cell and cell malformation, decreasing the total viable number, so the outstanding antimicrobial results encouraged the tooth filling biomedical applications.

Investigation of the Structural and Optical Properties of Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles Synthesized via a Green Route

We report herein the synthesis of ZnFe₂O₄ (ZF) nanoparticles via a simple and eco-friendly green route using lemon juice as a reducing agent and fuel. The effect of different calcination temperatures on the particle size and bandgap of grown ZF nanoparticles was investigated. The structural, morphological and optical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles were evaluated using synchrotron x-ray diffraction (S-XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS), respectively. S-XRD confirmed a spinel F-d3m phase in all four samples calcined at 350°C, 550°C, 750°C and 1000°C. The crystallite size calculated from the Debye-Scherrer equation showed an increase from 14 nm to 20 nm with the increase in calcination temperature. Williamson-Hall (W-H) analysis revealed an increase in the particle size from 16 nm to 21 nm and a decrease in the lattice microstrain from 0.913 × 10^-3 to 0.154 × 10^-4 with the increase in calcination temperature. The optical bandgap of the ZF nanoparticles obtained from UV-Vis-DRS decreased from 2.265 eV to 2.225 eV with the increase in calcination temperature. The ZF nanoparticles with tunable particle size, lattice microstrain and optical bandgap have potential application in ferrofluid, electromagnetic shielding, photocatalysis, hyperthermia, dye degradation and other areas.

Silver nanoparticles coated medical fiber synthesized by surface engineering with bio-inspired mussel powered polydopamine: An investigated antimicrobial potential with bacterial membrane leakage reaction mechanism

Nature frequently provides narrative biological motivation. This study reports on oxygen-induced auto-polymerization of dopamine on the surface of medical cotton fibers to develop super-hydrophobic surfaces. The versatile reactivity of polydopamine (PDA) surfactant was adopted to deposit silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on the surface of medical cotton. SEM micrographs demonstrated the uniform deposition of Ag NPs. The antimicrobial reactivity confirmed the potential of Ag-loaded PDA-cotton fiber to hinder the growth of some tested pathogenic microbes. Silver-loaded PDA-cotton fibers showed the most promising zone of inhibition (ZOI) against (33.5 mm), Candida tropicalis (30.2 mm), and Aspergillus niger (30.2 mm). In growth curve assay, after addition of silver-loaded PDA-cotton fibers, the O.D. were lower (0.365 nm), showing the repression impact on S. aureus. It was observed that the quantity of cellular protein discharged from S. aureus is directly proportional to the concentration of silver-loaded PDA-cotton fibers and found to be 159.68 μg/ml after the treatment with silver-loaded PDA-cotton fibers (2 cm × 2 cm), which proves the antibacterial characteristics of the synthesied silver-loaded PDA-cotton fibers. The obtained antimicrobial results gives solution in treating pathogenic microbes and the application of silver-loaded PDA-cotton fibers as wound dressing in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields.

Enhanced photocatalytic and antimicrobial performance of a multifunctional Cu-loaded nanocomposite under UV light: theoretical and experimental study

Due to modern industrialization and population growth, access to clean water has become a global challenge. In this study, a metal-semiconductor heterojunction was constructed between Cu NPs and the Co_0.5Ni_0.5Fe₂O₄/SiO₂/TiO₂ composite matrix for the photodegradation of potassium permanganate, hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) and p-nitroaniline (pNA) under UV light. In addition, the electronic and adsorption properties after Cu loading were evaluated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, the antimicrobial properties of the prepared samples toward pathogenic bacteria and unicellular fungi were investigated. Photocatalytic measurements show the outstanding efficiency of the Cu-loaded nanocomposite compared to that of bare Cu NPs and the composite matrix. Degradation efficiencies of 44% after 80 min, 100% after 60 min, and 65% after 90 min were obtained against potassium permanganate, Cr(VI), and pNA, respectively. Similarly, the antimicrobial evaluation showed high ZOI, lower MIC, higher protein leakage amount, and cell lysis of nearly all microbes treated with the Cu-loaded nanocomposite.

Eco-friendly synthesis of cobalt-zinc ferrites using quince extract for adsorption and catalytic applications: An approach towards environmental remediation

Cobalt-zinc ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized using environmentally friendly approach with quince extract as a reducing agent. Crystal structure and morphology of the obtained materials were studied by XRD, SEM-EDS, Mössbauer and IR spectroscopy. The synthesized nanoparticles have a cubic spinel structure and crystallite size ranging from 5 to 9 nm. The infrared spectra contain characteristic absorption bands for the M_A-O (∼560 cm^-1) and M_B-O bonds (∼420 cm^-1). Force constants were calculated for both tetrahedral and octahedral bonds. As the Co content increases, the force constant for the tetrahedral bond increases and the force constant for the octahedral bond decreases. The obtained ferrite nanoparticles have good magnetization as shown by VSM (in the range from 36 to 67 emu/g). Magnetic nanoparticles Co_xZn_1-xFe₂O₄ were also tested for induction heating with electromagnetic field. The sample with x (Co) = 0.4 has the highest specific absorption rate. The synthesized samples were tested as adsorbents using the Congo Red dye as model pollutant. The best adsorbent was pure zinc ferrite with the adsorption capacity of 24.7 mg/g. The catalytic activity of the obtained ferrites for the decomposition of H₂O₂ was studied as well. The most active catalyst was pure cobalt ferrite. Probably, the active centers are octahedral cobalt ions. Thus, the obtained magnetic nanoparticles can be used for the adsorptive removal of pollutants, catalytic decomposition of the H₂O₂ and low-frequency hyperthermia.

Advances in the Synthesis and Application of Magnetic Ferrite Nanoparticles for Cancer Therapy

Cancer is among the leading causes of mortality globally, with nearly 10 million deaths in 2020. The emergence of nanotechnology has revolutionised treatment strategies in medicine, with rigorous research focusing on designing multi-functional nanoparticles (NPs) that are biocompatible, non-toxic, and target-specific. Iron-oxide-based NPs have been successfully employed in theranostics as imaging agents and drug delivery vehicles for anti-cancer treatment. Substituted iron-oxides (MFe2O4) have emerged as potential nanocarriers due to their unique and attractive properties such as size and magnetic tunability, ease of synthesis, and manipulatable properties. Current research explores their potential use in hyperthermia and as drug delivery vehicles for cancer therapy. Significantly, there are considerations in applying iron-oxide-based NPs for enhanced biocompatibility, biodegradability, colloidal stability, lowered toxicity, and more efficient and targeted delivery. This review covers iron-oxide-based NPs in cancer therapy, focusing on recent research advances in the use of ferrites. Methods for the synthesis of cubic spinel ferrites and the requirements for their considerations as potential nanocarriers in cancer therapy are discussed. The review highlights surface modifications, where functionalisation with specific biomolecules can deliver better efficiency. Finally, the challenges and solutions for the use of ferrites in cancer therapy are summarised.

Potential Impact of Reduced Graphene Oxide Incorporated Metal Oxide Nanocomposites as Antimicrobial, and Antibiofilm Agents Against Pathogenic Microbes: Bacterial Protein Leakage Reaction Mechanism

In the current study, nanocomposites-based reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and metal oxides (AgO, NiO, and ZnO) were fabricated. The starting precursor and RGO were characterized by XRD, Raman, SEM, and HRTEM, while SEM and EDX mapping validated the synthesized nanocomposites. In addition, ZOI, MIC, antibiofilm, and growth curve were tested. The antimicrobial reaction mechanism was investigated by protein leakage assay and SEM imaging. Results revealed that all synthesized nanocomposites (RGO-AgO, RGO-NiO, and RGO-ZnO) have outstanding antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and unicellular fungi. Moreover, RGO-AgO, RGO-NiO, and RGO-ZnO nanocomposites exhibited an antibiofilm activity percentage against Staphylococcus aureus (91.72%), Candida albicans  (91.17%), and Escherichia coli (90.36%). The SEM analysis of S. aureus after RGO-AgO treatment indicated morphological differences, including the whole lysis of the outer surface supported by deformations of the bacterial cells. It was observed that the quantity of cellular protein leakage from S. aureus is directly proportional to the concentration of RGO-AgO, RGO-NiO, and RGO-ZnO nanocomposites and found to be 260.25 µg/mL, 110.55 µg/mL, and 99.90 µg/mL, respectively. The prepared nanocomposites promise to treat resistant microbes as a new strategy for managing infectious diseases.

Thermally induced oxygen related defects in eco-friendly ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles for enhanced wastewater treatment efficiencies

Herein, a simple but highly effective strategy of thermal annealing to modulate oxygen vacancies related defects in ZnFe₂O₄ (ZFO) nanoparticles for obtaining enhanced wastewater treatment efficiencies is reported. The as-prepared nanoparticles were thermally annealed at three different temperatures (500 °C, 600 °C and 700 °C) and their phase purity was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). All samples were found to exhibit pure phases of ZFO with different crystallite sizes ranging from 10 nm to 25 nm. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) images showed well dispersed nanoparticles and a strong correlation of grain size growth with annealing temperature was established. The optical absorption and emission characteristics were estimated through UV-visible and Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the variation of oxygen vacancies in the synthesized samples' lattice. The photocatalytic activities of all samples were investigated and the highest efficiencies were recorded for the ZFO samples annealed at 500 °C. Under high salinity condition, the organic dye degradation efficiency of the same sample remained the highest among all. The excellent dye degradation abilities in ZFO samples can be attributed to the abundance of oxygen vacancies in the crystal lattice that slow down the recombination rate during the photocatalysis process. Moreover, cytotoxicity tests revealed that all prepared ZFO samples showed insignificant cell structure effects on Picochlorum sp microalgae, as verified by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. On the other hand, no significant changes were detected on the viable cell concentration and Chlorophyll a content. This work presents a systematic way to finely tune the crystal sizes and to modulate oxygen related defects in ZFO through a highly effective annealing approach to signify their potential in industrial wastewater and seawater treatment processes.

Green Synthesis of Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Principles of Green Chemistry and Raw Materials

Increased request for metal and metal oxide nanoparticles nanoparticles has led to their large-scale production using high-energy methods with various toxic solvents. This cause environmental contamination, thus eco-friendly “green” synthesis methods has become necessary. An alternative way to synthesize metal nanoparticles includes using bioresources, such as plants and plant products, bacteria, fungi, yeast, algae, etc. “Green” synthesis has low toxicity, is safe for human health and environment compared to other methods, meaning it is the best approach for obtaining metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. This review reveals 12 principles of “green” chemistry and examples of biological components suitable for “green” synthesis, as well as modern scientific research of eco-friendly synthesis methods of magnetic and metal nanoparticles. Particularly, using extracts of green tea, fruits, roots, leaves, etc., to obtain Fe3O4 NPs. The various precursors as egg white (albumen), leaf and fruit extracts, etc., can be used for the „green” synthesis of spinel magnetic NPs. “Green” nanoparticles are being widely used as antimicrobials, photocatalysts and adsorbents. “Green” magnetic nanoparticles demonstrate low toxicity and high biocompatibility, which allows for their biomedical application, especially for targeted drug delivery, contrast imaging and magnetic hyperthermia applications. The synthesis of silver, gold, platinum and palladium nanoparticles using extracts from fungi, red algae, fruits, etc., has been described.

Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of silver-decorated zinc ferrite nanoparticles synthesized by a gamma irradiation-coupled sol-gel method against some pathogenic bacteria from medical operating room surfaces

This work aimed at the gamma irradiation-assisted synthesis of silver (Ag)-decorated ZnFe2O4 (ZFO) ferrite nanoparticles (NPs), which were tested for their antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against some pathogenic bacteria from medical operating room surfaces. The prepared Ag-decorated ZFO NPs were characterized via XRD, SEM, EDX, elemental mapping, and FTIR analysis. The antibacterial potential was tested as ZOI and MIC, while antibiofilm activity was estimated by the tube method. The growth curve assay, the effect of UV on the antimicrobial activity, and cell membrane leakage were evaluated, and the antibacterial reaction mechanism was investigated by SEM/EDX analysis. The XRD and FTIR results confirmed the successful preparation of Ag-decorated ZFO NPs. Antibacterial results revealed that the most potent decorated sample was Ag0.75@ZFO NPs, recording the most significant inhibition zone against Staphylococcus vitulinus (24.67 ± 0.577 mm) and low MIC (0.097 μg mL-1) against S. vitulinus. The antibiofilm activity of Ag0.75@ZFO NPs was the highest, recorded as 97.3% for S. aureus and 95.25% for Enterococcus columbae. In the case of UV exposure, bacterial growth reached the lowest grade. Finally, it was seen that the amount of cellular protein released from bacterial cells is directly proportional to the concentration of Ag0.75@ZFO NPs, which clearly explains the formation of pits in the cell membrane. The synthesized nanocomposites may find an application after mixing with operating room paints to reduce the harmful effect of pathogenic microbes and, therefore, eliminate bacterial contamination.

A Facile Fabrication of ZnFe2O4/Sepiolite Composite with Excellent Photocatalytic Performance on the Removal of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

The excellent photo-response of ZnFe2O4 in the visible light region makes it a promising catalyst, whereas some defects like serious particle agglomeration and easy recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs hinder its application. In this work, the ZnFe2O4/sepiolite (ZF-Sep) composites were synthesized using a co-precipitation method. The obtained ZF-Sep composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, BET, VSM and DRS. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the tetracycline hydrochloride removal efficiency under simulated visible light illumination. The results displayed that the ZnFe2O4 with average sizes about 20 nm were highly dispersed on sepiolite nanofibers. All the composites exhibited better photocatalytic performance than pure ZnFe2O4 due to the synergistic effect of the improvement on the agglomeration phenomenon of ZnFe2O4 and the reduction on the recombination rate of photo-generated electrons and holes. The optimum removal efficiency was that of the ZF-Sep-11 composite, which reached 93.6% within 3 h. Besides, the composite exhibited an excellent stability and reusability. Therefore, ZF-Sep composite is a promising catalyst for the treatment of wastewater contained antibiotics.

Spinel ferrites (MFe2O4): Synthesis, improvement and catalytic application in environment and energy field

To develop efficient catalysts is one of the major ways to solve the energy and environmental problems. Spinel ferrites, with the general chemical formula of MFe₂O₄ (where M = Mg²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Zn²⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, etc.), have attracted considerable attention in catalytic research. The flexible position and valence variability of metal cations endow spinel ferrites with diverse physicochemical properties, such as abundant surface active sites, high catalytic activity and easy to be modified. Meanwhile, their unique advantages in regenerating and recycling on account of the magnetic performances facilitate their practical application potential. Herein, the conventional as well as green chemistry synthesis of spinel ferrites is reviewed. Most importantly, the critical pathways to improve the catalytic performance are discussed in detail, mainly covering selective doping, site substitution, structure reversal, defect introduction and coupled composites. Furthermore, the catalytic applications of spinel ferrites and their derivative composites are exclusively reviewed, including Fenton-type catalysis, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and photoelectro-chemical catalysis. In addition, some vital remarks, including toxicity, recovery and reuse, are also covered. Future applications of spinel ferrites are envisioned focusing on environmental and energy issues, which will be pushed by the development of precise synthesis, skilled modification and advanced characterization along with emerging theoretical calculation.

Recent advancements of spinel ferrite based binary nanocomposite photocatalysts in wastewater treatment

A lot of studies on spinel ferrites (MFe₂O₄, M = divalent metal ion) and their binary nanocomposites as photocatalysts in the decontamination of wastewater have been performed, because MFe₂O₄ nanoparticles are relatively stable, biocompatible and low-cost efficient photocatalyst. The separation of MFe₂O₄ photocatalyst is easy owing to its excellent magnetic behavior. With this background, the recent developments on photocatalytic performances of MFe₂O₄ based binary nanocomposites were comprehensively reviewed. Especially, a focus on MFe₂O₄/metal oxides, MFe₂O₄/carbon based materials, MFe₂O₄/polymers, MFe₂O₄/metal nanoparticles and MFe₂O₄/other compounds for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes, emerging contaminants and inorganic pollutants has been thoroughly given. The advantages of MFe₂O₄ based nanocomposites as photocatalysts were also discussed. In addition, the possible pathway of active free radical generation by these photocatalysts under visible and ultraviolet irradiation has been explained. A comparison of photocatalytic activities of MFe₂O₄ based binary nanocomposites with recent reports has been carried out. This review concludes that MFe₂O₄ based binary nanocomposites have potential capacity in water purification technology. Nevertheless, their practical utilization in water treatment plants still needs to be further studied.

Rare earth metal (Sm) doped zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) for improved photocatalytic elimination of toxic dye from aquatic system

Wastewater remediation is the serious topic that must be taken into concern which would be a most crucial problem that destroys the natural properties as well as it has some worse effect on living organisms. By doing better wastewater management, the scarcity of water for domestic purposes can be eventually managed. Dyes are main organic pollutant that must be removed from wastewater. Pristine, 1% Sm doped and 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ were prepared through simple co-precipitation method. The materials were further analyzed for its structure, optical properties, rotational properties and morphology studies. These analyses were investigated with respect to X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence and scanning electron microscopic studies. XRD pattern of Pristine, 1% Sm doped and 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ was matched with JCPDS Card #89-1012 with cubic phase. Bandgap energy of prepared samples were 1.7 eV, 1.65 eV and 1.47 eV. The prepared cationic dye was degraded with help of visible light irradiation. 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles easily removed 65% of dye within 1 h duration. 2% Sm doped ZnFe₂O₄ was tested for its reusability and efficiency was stable for more than three cycles. This shows the stability of the sample towards degrading the cationic dye. By the doping of Samarium, ZnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles enthusiastically removed cationic dye and it proves to be an efficient candidate in removing dyes and can help in wastewater treatment in upcoming era.

Exploring the influence of varying pH on structural, electro-optical, magnetic and photo-Fenton properties of mesoporous ZnFe2O4 nanocrystals

An economically viable and superficial technique was indorsed to yield ZnFe₂O₄ nanocrystals in the system to investigate the impact of pH variation on the optical, structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of as-prepared nanocrystals. The as-synthesized ZnFe₂O₄ nanocrystals were premeditated with the application protracted to degradation of Methylene blue organic dye. The results specify that the pH plays the utmost decisive facet in photo-Fenton recital. From XRD (X-Ray diffraction) analyses, it was confirmed that as-synthesized nanocrystals belong to a cubic Fd3m crystal phase. The crystallite size was also determined by the Scherrer formula and it was noticed that as the pH rises the crystallite size also increased. FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared) analysis depicts two absorption peaks ∼ 500 and ∼600 cm^-1 that represents tetrahedral (Td) and octahedral (Oh) sites. Using TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), the morphology was observed to be spherical particles with some agglomeration. Photoluminescence and UV-visible spectral studies were performed to investigate the optical properties. The bandgap energy was seen to decrease as the pH increased. Using BET analysis, the surface area for the as-synthesized samples was found to decrease on increasing the pH. The reaction results showed that the ZnFe₂O₄ has good photocatalytic activity, which can be attributed to high surface area and pore volume, and large pore size. The ZnFe₂O₄ produced by the co-precipitation route exhibited promising photocatalytic activity for the removal of textile dye, reaching nearly 99.2% of decolorization at 100 min. Therefore, ZnFe₂O₄ particles rapidly prepared by the co-precipitation route have the potential for use in treatment of textile wastewater by the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. With the help of VSM analysis, the coercivity and other magnetic properties were determined for the as-synthesized nanocrystal with plays a significant role in photocatalytic recyclability, which intends to premediate that the prepared nanocrystals can be used in industrial persistence.

Metal ferrite incorporated polysulfone thin-film nanocomposite membranes for wastewater treatment

Effluents from food, fermentation, and sugar industries contain a large quantity of glucose which has to be removed to limit the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the water discharged. This work proposes novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes incorporated with MgFe₂O₄ and ZnFe₂O₄ nanoparticles to address this concern. The nanoparticles synthesized by the sol-gel method was extensively characterized and then incorporated into the active polyamide layer of the thin-film composite polysulfone membranes. The change in membrane morphology, wettability, chemical structure, and mechanical strength with the incorporation of nanoparticles was studied in detail. Membranes with 0.005 wt.% MgFe₂O₄ nanoparticle exhibited highest glucose rejection (96.52 ± 2.35%) at 10 bar, 25 °C, and sufficiently high pure water flux (50.54 ± 1.92 L/m²h). This membrane also displayed 69.1 ± 5.12% salt rejection when challenged with 2000 ppm synthetic NaCl solution.

Anti-bacterial and wound healing-promoting effects of zinc ferrite nanoparticles

BACKGROUND

Increasing antibiotic resistance continues to focus on research into the discovery of novel antimicrobial agents. Due to its antimicrobial and wound healing-promoting activity, metal nanoparticles have attracted attention for dermatological applications. This study is designed to investigate the scope and bactericidal potential of zinc ferrite nanoparticles (ZnFe₂O₄ NPs), and the mechanism of anti-bacterial action along with cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and wound healing properties.

RESULTS

ZnFe₂O₄ NPs were synthesized via a modified co-precipitation method. Structure, size, morphology, and elemental compositions of ZnFe₂O₄ NPs were analyzed using X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In PrestoBlue and live/dead assays, ZnFe₂O₄ NPs exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxic effects on human dermal fibroblasts. In addition, the hemocompatibility assay revealed that the NPs do not significantly rupture red blood cells up to a dose of 1000 µg/mL. Bacterial live/dead imaging and zone of inhibition analysis demonstrated that ZnFe₂O₄ NPs showed dose-dependent bactericidal activities in various strains of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Interestingly, NPs showed antimicrobial activity through multiple mechanisms, such as cell membrane damage, protein leakage, and reactive oxygen species generation, and were more effective against gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, in vitro scratch assay revealed that ZnFe₂O₄ NPs improved cell migration and proliferation of cells, with noticeable shrinkage of the artificial wound model.

CONCLUSIONS

This study indicated that ZnFe₂O₄ NPs have the potential to be used as a future antimicrobial and wound healing drug.

Spinel ferrite (AFe2O4)-based heterostructured designs for lithium-ion battery, environmental monitoring, and biomedical applications

The development of spinel ferrite nanomaterial (SFN)-based hybrid architectures has become more popular owing to the fascinating physicochemical properties of SFNs, such as their good electro-optical and catalytic properties, high chemothermal stability, ease of functionalization, and superparamagnetic behaviour. Furthermore, achieving the perfect combination of SFNs and different nanomaterials has promised to open up many unique synergistic effects and advantages. Inspired by the above-mentioned noteworthy properties, numerous and varied applications have been recently developed, such as energy storage in lithium-ion batteries, environmental pollutant monitoring, and, especially, biomedical applications. In this review, recent development efforts relating to SFN-based hybrid designs are described in detail and logically, classified according to 4 major hybrid structures: SFNs/carbonaceous nanomaterials; SFNs/metal–metal oxides; SFNs/MS₂; and SFNs/other materials. The underlying advantages of the additional interactions and combinations of effects, compared to the standalone components, and the potential uses have been analyzed and assessed for each hybrid structure in relation to lithium-ion battery, environmental, and biomedical applications.
