Development of effective adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from wastewater is indispensable due to increasing water scarcity and a lack of pure drinking water, which are prevailing as a result of rapid industrialization and population growth. Recently, the development of new adsorbents and their effective use without generating secondary waste is receiving huge consideration. In order to protect the environment from primary and secondary pollution, the development of adsorbents from wastes and their recycling have become conventional practices aimed at waste management. As a result, significant progress has been made in the synthesis of new porous carbon and metal-organic frameworks as adsorbents, with the objective of using them for the removal of pollutants. While many different kinds of pollutants are produced in the environment, drug pollutants are the most vicious because of their tendency to undergo significant structural changes, producing metabolites and residues with entirely different properties compared to their parent compounds. Chemical reactions involving oxidation, hydrolysis, and photolysis transform drugs. The resulting compounds can have detrimental effects on living beings that are present in soil and water. This review stresses the development of adsorbents with adjustable porosities for the broad removal of primary drug pollutants and their metabolites, which are formed as a result of drug transformations in environmental matrices. This keeps adsorbents from building up in the environment and prevents them from becoming significant pollutants in the future. Additionally, it stops secondary pollution caused by the deterioration of the used adsorbents. Focus on the development of effective adsorbents with flexible porosities allows for the complete removal of coexisting contaminants and makes a substantial contribution to wastewater management. In order to concentrate more on the development of flexible pore adsorbents, it is crucial to comprehend the milestones reached in the research and applications of porous magnetic adsorbents based on metal and carbon, which are discussed here.

Biosynthesis approach of zinc oxide nanoparticles for aqueous phosphorous removal: physicochemical properties and antibacterial activities

In this study, phosphorus (PO43--P) is removed from water samples using zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). These nanoparticles are produced easily, quickly, and sustainably using Onion extracts (Allium cepa) at an average crystallite size of 8.13 nm using the Debye-Scherrer equation in the hexagonal wurtzite phase. The characterization and investigation of bio-synthesis ZnO NPs were carried out. With an initial concentration of 250 mg/L of P, the effects of the adsorbent dose, pH, contact time, and temperature were examined. At pH = 3 and T = 300 K, ZnO NPs achieved the optimum sorption capacity of 84 mg/g, which was superior to many other adsorbents. The isothermal study was found to fit the Langmuir model at a monolayer capacity of 89.8 mg/g, and the kinetic study was found to follow the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process was verified to be endothermic and spontaneous by thermodynamic characteristics. As a result of their low cost as an adsorbent and their high metal absorption, ZnO NPs were found to be the most promising sorbent in this investigation and have the potential to be used as effective sorbents for the removal of P from aqueous solutions. The antimicrobial activity results showed that ZnO NPs concentration had greater antibacterial activity than conventional Cefotaxime, which was utilized as a positive control in the inhibitory zone. However, no inhibitory zone was visible in the controlled wells that had been supplemented with onion extract and DMSO.

Green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles from Argemone mexicana L. leaf extract coated with MOF-5 for the removal of metronidazole antibiotics from aqueous solution

There are growing concerns about the toxicity of metronidazole (MNZ) antibiotics in wastewater, which must be removed. This study used AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) to investigate the adsorptive removal of MNZ antibiotics from wastewater. Green synthesis of Ag-nanoparticles was from Argemone mexicana leaf aqueous extract blended with the synthesized MOF-5 in 1:3 by proportion. The adsorption materials were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface area increased due to the appearance of micropores. Besides, the efficiency of AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) for MNZ removal was evaluated by adsorption properties, including key influential parameters (adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, etc.) and adsorption mechanism, kinetics/isotherms. The results from the adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² = 0.998) and well fitted with the Langmuir isotherm having 191.1 mg/g maximum adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism of AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) was due to the interactions of π-π stacking, Ag-N-MOF covalent bonding and hydrogen bonding. Thus, AgN/MOF-5 (1:3) is a potential adsorbent for the removal of aqueous MNZ. The adsorption process is endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible based on the obtained thermodynamic parameter of ΔH^O and ΔS^O having 14.72 and 0.129 kJ/mol respectively.

Hierarchically porous graphene-like biochar for efficient removal of aromatic pollutants and their structure-performance relationship: A combined experimental, MD and DFT study

Development of high-efficiency adsorbents and exploration of the structure-performance relationship holds exciting implications for removal of aromatic pollutants (APs) from water. Herein, hierarchically porous graphene-like biochars (HGBs) were successfully prepared by K₂CO₃ simultaneous graphitization and activation of Physalis pubescens husk. The HGBs possess high specific surface area (1406-2369.7 m²/g), hierarchically meso-/microporous structure and high graphitization degree. The optimized HGB-2-9 sample exhibits rapid adsorption equilibrium time (t_e) and high adsorption capacities (Q_e) for seven widely-used persistent APs with different molecular structures (e.g., phenol: t_e = 7 min, Q_e = 191.06 mg/g; methylparaben: t_e = 12 min Q_e = 482.15 mg/g). HGB-2-9 also shows a wide pH (3-10) suitability and good ionic strength (0.01-0.5 M NaCl) resistance properties. The effects of the physicochemical properties of HGBs and APs on the adsorption performance were deeply investigated by the adsorption experiments, molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) simulation. The results demonstrate that the large specific surface area, high graphitization degree and hierarchically porous structure of HGB-2-9 can supply more active sites on accessible surface and facilitate the transport of APs. And the aromaticity and hydrophobicity of APs play the more crucial roles during the adsorption process. Besides, the HGB-2-9 presents good recyclability and high removal efficiency for APs in various real water, which further confirms its potential for practical applications.

Quantum and experimental investigation of the application of Crassostrea gasar (mangrove oyster) shell-based CaO nanoparticles as adsorbent and photocatalyst for the removal of procaine penicillin from aqueous solution

The present study was designed to synthesize and characterize calcium oxide nanoparticles (using mangrove oyster shell as a precursor) and apply the synthesized nanoparticles as a photocatalyst to degrade procaine penicillin in an aqueous solution. The photocatalyst exhibited an average band gap of 4.42 eV, showed a maximum wavelength of absorbance in the UV region (i.e., 280 nm), and is a microporous nanoparticle with a particle diameter of 50 nm. The photocatalyzed degradation of the drug was conducted under natural sunlight, and the influence of parameters such as the period of contact, catalyst load, pH, initial drug concentration, and ionic strength was investigated concerning the degradation profile. The results obtained from response surface analysis indicated that an optimum degradation efficiency of about 93% can be obtained at a concentration, pH, and catalyst dosage of 0.125 M, 2, and 0.20 g respectively, at 0.902 desirabilities. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood, modified Freundlich, parabolic diffusion, pseudo-first-/second-order, and zero-, first-, and second-order kinetic parameters were tested to ascertain the best model that best described the experimental data. Consequently, the Langmuir-Hinshelwood, modified Freundlich, and pseudo-second-order models were accepted based on the minimum error and higher R² values. Based on the Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate constants for adsorption and photodegradation as well as the evaluated valence bond potential, the degradation of the drug first proceeded through the mechanism of adsorption and followed by the oxidation of the drug by superoxide (generated from the interaction of electrons that generated by through the absorption of UV radiation). The quantum chemical calculation gave evidence that pointed towards the establishment of strong agreement with experimental data and also showed that the carboxyl functional group in the drug is the target site for adsorption and subsequent degradation.

Management of hazardous fly-ash energy waste in the adsorptive removal of diclofenac by the use of synthetic zeolitic materials

Zeolite-carbon composites (Na-P1(C), Na-X(C)) and pure zeolites (Na-P1, Na-X) were synthesized from hazardous high-carbon fly ash waste (HC FA) via hydrothermal reaction with sodium hydroxide (NaOH). These solids were applied in the removal of diclofenac (DCF) from aqueous solution, with and without poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The experiments included adsorption-desorption measurements, as well as electrokinetic and stability analyses. The obtained results showed that HC FA and Na-P1(C) had the greatest adsorption capacity towards DCF, i.e., 26.51 and 21.19 mg/g, respectively. PAA caused considerable decrease in the DCF adsorption due to the competition of both adsorbates of anionic character for active sites. For example, the adsorbed amount of DCF on Na-P1 without PAA was 14.11 mg/g, whereas the one measured with PAA was 5.08 mg/g. Most of prepared solids were effectively regenerated by the use of NaOH. Desorption degree reached even 73.65% in the single systems (with one adsorbate) and 97.24% in the mixed ones (with two adsorbates). Zeolitic materials formed suspensions of rather low stability, which underwent further deterioration in the organic molecules presence. All the results obtained in this study indicated that HC FA can be successfully managed in the removal of organic substances.

Remediation of pharmaceutical pollutants using graphene-based materials - A review on operating conditions, mechanism and toxicology

Graphene is a high surface area special carbon compound with exceptional biological, electronic and mechanical properties. Graphene-based materials are potential components used in water treatment on different modes and processes. Ibuprofen and ciprofloxacin are two commonly found pharmaceutical contaminants discharged into water bodies from industrial, domestic and hospital sources. Their concentration levels in water bodies are reported in the range of 1 μg/L to 6.5 mg/L and 0.050-100 μg/L respectively. Their toxic effects pose very high risk to the inhabiting organisms. Their ability to resist biodegradation and capacity to bioaccumulate makes the conventional methods less effective in removal. In the present article, treatment of these compounds via three methods, adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and electro-fenton reactions using graphene-based materials along with the methods adopted for synthesis and treatment are reviewed. The uptakes obtained by graphene-derived adsorbents are presented along with the optimal operating conditions. Studies reported complete removal of ibuprofen from wastewater was achieved at 7 pH for 60 min using graphene membrane as adsorbent and uptake of 99% of ciprofloxacin was exhibited for graphene nanoplates/boron nitrate aerogel at a pH of 7 and 60 min. The reduced graphene oxide surface exhibits higher affinity to light adsorption which leads to the formation of photo generated electrons. The future perspectives for improved applications of graphene-based materials and the research gap currently existing are highlighted.

The photocatalytic degradation kinetics of the anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen in aqueous solution under UV/TiO2 system and neural networks modeling

In this study, the kinetic degradation of the anti-inflammatory drug Ibuprofen in aqueous solution by heterogeneous TiO2 photocatalytic was investigated. The data obtained were used for training an artificial neural network. Preliminary experiments of photolysis and adsorption were carried out to assess their contribution to the photocatalytic degradation. Both, direct photolysis and adsorption of Ibuprofen are very low-efficient processes (15,83% and 23,88%, respectively). The degradation efficiency was significantly elevated with the addition of TiO2 Catalyst (>94%). The photocatalytic degradation followed a pseudo-first-order reaction according to the L-H model. The hydroxyl radicals and photo-hole (h+‏) were found to contribute to the Ibuprofen removal. The higher the initial concentration of Ibuprofen resulted in the lower percentage of degradation. This can be credited to the fact that the created photon and radicals were constant. The higher the initial concentration of Ibuprofen the fewer radicals were shared for each Ibuprofen molecular and so the lower percentage of degradation. The maximum photoactivity from the available light is accomplished when the concentration of catalyst reaches to 1 g/L (0.8 g), which was adopted as the optimal amounts. Compared to the removal of ibuprofen, the mineralization was relatively lower. This decrease is due to the organic content of the treated solution, which is mainly composed of recalcitrant intermediate products. The network was planned as a Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm with three layer, four neurons in the input layer, fourteen neurons in the hidden layer and one neuron in the output layer (4:14:1). The artificial neural network was trained until the MSE value between the simulated data and the experimental results was 10−5. The best results (R 2 = 0.999 and MSE = 1.5 × 10−4) were obtained with a log sigmoid transfer function at hidden layer and a linear transfer function at output layer.

Physicochemical Modeling of the Adsorption of Pharmaceuticals on MIL-100-Fe and MIL-101-Fe MOFs

The adsorption of naproxen (NAP), diclofenac (DFC), and acetaminophen (APAP) molecules from aqueous solutions using MIL-100-Fe and MIL-101-Fe metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has been analyzed and modeled. Adsorption isotherms of these pharmaceuticals were experimentally quantified at 30 and 40°C and pH 7. Textural parameters and surface chemistry of these MOFs were analyzed, and results were utilized to explain the pharmaceutical adsorption mechanism. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were performed to understand the reactivity of pharmaceutical molecules, and a statistical physics model was employed to calculate the main physicochemical parameters related to the adsorption mechanism. Results showed that the adsorption of these pharmaceuticals on MOFs was multimolecular and exothermic. Both MOFs displayed the highest adsorption capacities, up to 2.19 and 1.71 mmol/g, for NAP and DFC molecules, respectively. MIL-101-Fe showed better pharmaceutical adsorption properties than MIL-100-Fe due to its highest content of Fe-O clusters and mesopore volume. Adsorption mechanism of these organic molecules could involve hydrogen bond, van der Waals forces, and electrostatic interactions with MOF surfaces. In particular, MIL-101-Fe MOF is a promising material to prepare composites with competitive adsorption capacities for facing the water pollution caused by pharmaceutical compounds.

Exploring the potential of graphene oxide nanosheets for porous media decontamination from cationic dyes

Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, often embedded in nano-composites, have been studied as promising materials for waste water purification, in particular to adsorb heavy metals and cationic organic contaminants. However, a broader range of potential applications of GO is still unexplored. This work investigated the potential applicability of GO for enhanced in-situ soil washing of secondary sources of groundwater contamination (i.e. the controlled recirculation of a washing GO suspension via injection/extraction wells). The laboratory study aimed at quantifying the capability of GO to effectively remove adsorbed methylene blue (MB) from contaminated sand. The tests were conducted in simplified conditions (synthetic groundwater at NaCl concentration of 20 mM, silica sand) to better highlight the key mechanisms under study. The results indicated a maximum sorption capacity of 1.6 mgMB/mgGO in moderately alkaline conditions. Even though the adsorption of MB onto GO slightly reduced the GO mobility in the porous medium, a breakthrough higher than 95% was obtained for MB/GO mass ratios up to 0.5. This suggests that a very high recovery of the injected particles should be also expected in the field.

Synthesis of Porphyrin Zr-MOFs for the Adsorption and Photodegradation of Antibiotics under Visible Light

The release of antibiotics into the water environment can pose a serious threat to human and ecological health, so it is of great significance to effectively remove antibiotics from wastewater. In this work, porphyrinic zirconium metal-organic framework material, PCN-224, was first explored for the adsorption removal of antibiotics from water using tetracycline (TC) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) as examples. We prepared a series of PCN-224 with different particle sizes (150 nm, 300 nm, 500 nm, and 6 μm). Benefiting from the huge surface area (1616 m² g^-1), the 300 nm-PCN-224 sample had the best adsorption properties for TC and CIP. Remarkably, it exhibits fast removal rates and high adsorption capacities of 354.81 and 207.16 mg g^-1 for TC and CIP, respectively. The adsorption of TC and CIP in 300 nm-PCN-224 is consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, which indicates that the adsorption can be regarded as homogeneous monolayer chemisorption, and the adsorption is exothermic, which has been confirmed by thermodynamic studies. Under visible-light irradiation, 300 nm-PCN-224 exhibited high photocatalytic activity for TC and CIP. The adsorption studies confirmed that the adsorption of adsorbates takes place via the formation of hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions, and electrostatic attraction. In addition, the adsorbent can be simply regenerated by photocatalysis under visible light, and the adsorption-desorption efficiency is still above 85% after repeated use five times. The work of MOFs to remove antibiotics from water shows that MOFs have great potential in this field and are worthy of further study.

Rapid determination of folic acid and riboflavin in urine by polypyrrole magnetic solid-phase extractant combined ultra-performance liquid chromatography

Determination of folic acid and riboflavin in biological samples is difficult due to their high polarity, low concentration, chemical instability, and complex matrix. In this study, the polypyrrole-coated magnetic nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@PPy) was synthesized innovatively with the assistance of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. To evaluate the adsorption mechanism and the feasibility of synthesized Fe₃O₄@PPy as an adsorbent, the adsorption capacities, kinetics and thermodynamics of folic acid and riboflavin were investigated systemically. Furthermore, in light of the chemical instability of folic acid and riboflavin a method for rapid extraction and detection of them from human urine within 10 min was developed successfully by combining magnetic solid phase extraction with ultra-performance liquid chromatography (MSPE/UPLC). The adsorption parameters including sorbent amount, pH value, extraction time, desorption solvent and desorption time were studied. Under optimum conditions, the performance of the established determination method was validated with the linearly dependent coefficients (>0.9995), the limits of detection (0.02-0.05 µg/mL), the limits of quantification (0.07-0.18 µg/mL), and the recoveries (92.2-105.1%, with relative standard deviation < 3.3%). The rapid extraction and detection of folic acid and riboflavin from real urine samples were achieved subsequently. The present study suggests that the developed method exhibits a promising application in the analysis of free folic acid and riboflavin in human urine samples, which can provide a reference for the clinical drug monitoring and treatment.

Efficient removal of pharmaceuticals from water using graphene nanoplatelets as adsorbent

Recently, pharmaceutical pollutants in water have emerged as a global concern as they give threat to human health and the environment. In this study, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were used to efficiently remove antibiotics sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and analgesic acetaminophen (ACM) as pharmaceutical pollutants from water by an adsorption process. GNPs; C750, C300, M15 and M5 were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. The effects of several parameters viz. solution pH, adsorbent amount, initial concentration and contact time were studied. The parameters were optimized by a batch adsorption process and the maximum removal efficiency for both pharmaceuticals was 99%. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms models were employed, and the experimental data were best analysed with pseudo-second kinetic and Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) of 210.08 mg g-1 for SMX and 56.21 mg g-1 for ACM. A regeneration study was applied using different eluents; 5% ethanol-deionized water 0.005 M NaOH and HCl. GNP C300 was able to remove most of both pollutants from environmental water samples. Molecular docking was used to simulate the adsorption mechanism of GNP C300 towards SMX and ACM with a free binding energy of -7.54 kcal mol-1 and -5.29 kcal mol-1, respectively, which revealed adsorption occurred spontaneously.

Electrochemical oxidation of diclofenac on CNT and M/CNT modified electrodes

Successful electrochemical oxidation of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug considered as an emerging pollutant, was investigated on CNT, Pt/CNT and Ru/CNT modified electrodes based on Carbon Toray in aqueous media.

Transition element doped octahedral manganese molecular sieves (Me-OMS-2) as diclofenac adsorbents

Diclofenac (DCF) control measures have become an area of increased interest for environmental researchers due to the high environmental concentration and risk of DCF. Adsorption seems to be promising for DCF removal from the aqueous phase because of its specific superiority in comparison with biodegradation, membrane separation, and advanced oxidation or reduction. In this study, OMS-2 and metal-doped OMS-2 ((Me-OMS-2, with Me = Co, Cu or Ce) were prepared and tested as adsorbents for the removal of DCF. It was evident that the maximum adsorption capacity and rate of Ce-OMS-2 were much higher than those of the other adsorbents, which could be attributed to its large specific surface area and stereoscopic aperture structure. The experimental data are fitted the pseudo-second-order model, the Elovich equation and the Langmuir model well; moreover, the process is an endothermic and spontaneous thermodynamic process, during which the entropy increased, based on the experimental results, indicating that chemisorption was dominant during the DCF adsorption process onto Ce-OMS-2. By the integral of the peak deconvoluted from the XPS spectrum, the ratio of Mn³⁺/Mn⁴⁺ increased from 0.393 to 0.407, revealing that Mn(IV) is rarely reduced into Mn(III) during the DCF adsorption process.

Can salicylic acid modulate biochemical, physiological and population alterations in a macrophyte species under chemical stress by diclofenac?

Salicylic acid (SA) is a pharmaceutical drug that may exert toxic effects by its own; however, simultaneous exposure of plants to SA and to other substances, often results in the significant changes in the patterns of toxic response/resistance to these other sources of chemical stress. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the capacity of SA of modulating Lemna minor responses co-exposed to the pharmaceutical drug, diclofenac - DCF. To attain this objective, L. minor was exposed for 7 days, to DCF alone, and to combinations of DCF with SA. After exposure, biochemical, physiological and population endpoints were analyzed as follows: catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) activities, pigments content (chlorophyll a (Chl a), b (Chl b) and total (TChl), carotenoids (Car) and [Chl a]/[Chl b] and [TChl]/[Car] ratios), and growth specific rate, fresh weight and root length. Single exposures to DCF were capable of causing effects in all analyzed endpoints. However, co-exposure of DCF with SA partially reverted these effects. Finally, we may suggest that SA is capable to prevent the toxicity of DCF in macrophytes, by modulating the toxic response of exposed plants.

Evaluation of ketoprofen toxicity in two freshwater species: Effects on biochemical, physiological and population endpoints

Among the most used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ketoprofen (KTF) assumes an important position. Nevertheless, its ecotoxicological effects in non-target organisms are poorly characterized, despite its use and frequency of occurrence in aquatic matrices. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the possible toxicological effects of KTF contamination, in two freshwater species, Lemna minor and Daphnia magna, by measuring biochemical, physiological and population parameters. To attain this objective, both species were exposed to KTF at the same concentrations (0, 0.24, 1.2, 6 and 30 μg/L). L. minor plants were exposed during 4 d to these levels of KTF, and the enzymatic activity (catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and carbonic anhydrase (CA)), and pigments content (chlorophylls a, b and total and carotenoids) were analyzed to evaluate the toxicity of this drug. D. magna was acutely and chronically exposed to KTF, and enzymatic activities (CAT, GSTs and cyclooxygenase (COX)), the feeding rates, and reproduction traits were assessed. In L.minor, KTF provoked alterations in all enzyme activities, however, it was not capable of causing any alteration in any pigment levels. On the other hand, KTF also provoked alterations in all enzymatic activities in D. magna, but did not affect feeding rates and life-history parameters. In conclusion, exposure to KTF, provoked biochemical alterations in both species. However, these alterations were not reflected into deleterious effects on physiological and populational traits of L. minor and D. magna.

Magnetic Multiwall Carbon Nanotube Decorated with Novel Functionalities: Synthesis and Application as Adsorbents for Lead Removal from Aqueous Medium

Water pollution is one of the major challenges facing modern society because of industrial development and urban growth. This study is directed towards assessing the use of multiwall carbon nanotube, after derivatization and magnetization, as a new and renewable absorbent, to remove toxic metal ions from waste streams. The adsorbents were prepared by, first oxidation of multiwall carbon nanotube, then derivatizing the oxidized product with hydroxyl amine, hydrazine and amino acid. The adsorbents were characterized by various techniques. The adsorption efficiency of the multiwall carbon nanotube adsorbents toward Pb(II) was investigated. The effect of adsorbent’s dose, temperature, pH, and time on the adsorption efficiency were studied and the adsorption parameters that gave the highest efficiency were determined. The derivatives have unique coordination sites that included amine, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups, which are excellent chelating agents for metal ions. The thermodynamic and kinetic results analysis results indicated spontaneous adsorption of Pb(II) by the multiwall carbon nanotube adsorbents at room temperature. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorbents were regenerated using 0.1 N HCl.

Enhanced Ibuprofen Adsorption and Desorption on Synthesized Functionalized Magnetic Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes from Aqueous Solution

In recent years, concerns have been raised about the occurrence of active raw materials and pharmaceutical ingredients that may be present in water, including wastewater, in the pharmaceutical industry. Wastewater treatment methods are not enough to completely remove active pharmaceuticals and other waste; thus, this study aims to assess the use of a multiwall carbon nanotube after derivatization and magnetization as a new and renewable absorbent for removing ibuprofen from an aqueous medium. The adsorbents were prepared by first oxidizing a multiwall carbon nanotube and then deriving the oxidized product with hydroxyl amine (m-MWCNT-HA), hydrazine (m-MWCNT-HYD), and amino acid (m-MWCNT-CYS). Adsorbents were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Batch adsorption studies were conducted to study the effects of pH, temperature, time, and initial concentration of the adsorbate. Adsorption isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamics studies were also conducted. The results show that the optimal pH for nearly complete removal of Ibu in a short time at room temperature was 4 for three adsorbents. The adsorption followed the Langmuir isotherm model with pseudo-second-order kinetics. The percentage of removal of ibuprofen reached up to 98.4%, 93%, and 61.5% for m-MWCNT-CYS, m-MWCNT-HYD, and m-MWCNT-HA respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the grafted MWCNTs presented in this work comprise the first example in the literature of oxidized MWCNT modified with such functionalities and applied for ibuprofen removal.

Green-synthesized copper nano-adsorbent for the removal of pharmaceutical pollutants from real wastewater samples

The release of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen (Ibu), Naproxen (Nab) and Diclofenac (Dic) to the aquatic system cause serious environmental problems. In this study, green-synthesized copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) have been used as nano-adsorbent for the removal of Ibu, Nab, and Dic from wastewater samples. Formation of Cu NPs was confirmed by different analytical techniques. The adsorption parameters such as temperature, pH, adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dose and contact time were studied. The best removal results were obtained at these conditions: temperature 298 K, pH = 4.5, 10.0 mg Cu NPs, 60 min. At these conditions, the removal percentage of Ibu, Nap, and Dic were found to be 74.4, 86.9 and 91.4% respectively. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities were calculated as 36.0, 33.9 and 33.9 mg/g for Dic, Nap, and Ibu respectively. The kinetic studies conducted that the sorption process obeyed the second order kinetic model, while the thermodynamic results revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic (+23.8, +40.8 and +38.3 kJ/mol for Ibu, Nap and Dic respectively). The results revealed that green-synthesized copper nano-adsorbent may be used for the removal of the anti-inflammatory drugs from real wastewater efficiently.

Applying Supercritical Fluid Technology to Prepare Ibuprofen Solid Dispersions with Improved Oral Bioavailability

In this study, supercritical fluid (SCF) technology was applied to prepare reliable solid dispersions of pharmaceutical compounds with limited bioavailability using ibuprofen (IBU) as a model compound. Solid-state characterization of the dispersions was conducted by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PXRD and DSC results suggested that the amorphous form of IBU was maintained in the solid dispersions. Furthermore, in vitro dissolution and in vivo pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in rats were also performed. The dissolution performance of the SCF-prepared IBU dispersions was significantly improved compared to that of the physical mixtures of crystalline IBU and a polymer. In addition, the PK results revealed that the SCF-prepared IBU dispersions produced remarkably high blood drug concentrations (both the AUC and C_max) and a rapid absorption rate (T_max). Finally, molecular modeling was used to evaluate the binding energy of interactions between IBU and the polymers. The negative binding energy suggests a relatively stable system. Hence, SCF technology can be used as a very effective approach to prepare IBU solid dispersions with good physical stability and enhanced in vitro and in vivo performance.

Statistical optimization of preparing marine macroalgae derived activated carbon/iron oxide magnetic composites for sequestering acetylsalicylic acid from aqueous media using response surface methodologys

This study focuses on the optimization of synthetic conditions for preparing marine macroalgae-derived activated carbon/iron oxide magnetic composites (AC/Fe-MC) and its feasibility for the removal of acetylsalicylic acid from aqueous media. Response surface methodology coupled with a 3^k Box-Behnken design was applied to determine the optimal conditions (independent variables: impregnation ratio, activation temperature, and activation time) towards two response variables (production yield and adsorption capacity). According to the analysis of variance and numerical desirability function approaches, the optimal conditions were impregnation ratio of 2.62:1, activation temperature of 727 °C, and activation time of 129 min. Physicochemical properties of the prepared composite revealed that AC/Fe-MC possesses a porous structure and superparamagnetic property, which substantially contributed to the effective adsorption capacity and separation from the solution using an external magnetic field. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium studies delineated that the pseudo-second-order and Sips isotherm models represent the adsorption behavior of AC/Fe-MC accurately. The maximum adsorption capacity of AC/Fe-MC was found to be around 127 mg/g at 10 °C, as fitted by Sips isotherm model, which is higher than that of other adsorbents reported in the literature. Intraparticle diffusion and Boyd models suggested that the adsorption process was mainly controlled by film diffusion mechanism. Lastly, thermodynamic and isosteric heat of adsorption analyses demonstrated that the adsorption process was controlled by physisorption and exothermic mechanisms.

Highly Effective Removal of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Pharmaceuticals from Water by Zr(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Framework: Adsorption Performance and Mechanisms

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals are emerging organic micropollutants in surface water, groundwater, and wastewater, whose removal is very important yet challenging. As a new class of porous functional materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted extensive attention for their adsorption applications. Here, we report that Zr(IV)-based MOFs (defective UiO-66, and MOF-808) have extraordinary adsorption ability to remove nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals from water. Excellent adsorption performances are obtained for UiO-66 and MOF-808, particularly for UiO-66, of which the adsorption capacities are the highest in a wide series of adsorptive materials previously reported. It is elucidated that the incomplete-coordinated cationic Zr in the cluster has high affinity for the anionic pharmaceutical (chemical adsorption) and that the adsorption interaction between the benzene ring of the pharmaceutical and MOF's ligand is involved to enhance or as an alternative to the adsorption interactions (π-π interaction). In particular, adsorption of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, indomethacin, and furosemide by UiO-66 and MOF-808 and the synergetic effect of chemical adsorption and π-π interaction are outstanding, leading to extremely higher binding energies ( E_bind) and sorption abilities.
