Structural characterization and biological activity of a new metal complexes based of Schiff base

Synthesis, structural characterization, DFT and molecular dynamics simulations of dinuclear (μ-hydroxo)-bridged triethanolamine copper(II) complexes: efficient candidates towards visible light-mediated photo-Fenton degradation of organic dyes

Multinuclear (di/tri) copper(II) complexes bridged through hydroxyl groups are very interesting coordination complexes owing to their potential applications in various fields. In this work, three novel dinuclear (μ-hydroxo)-bridged copper(II) complexes in the crystal form, namely, [Cu2(3,5-DIFLB)2(H2tea)2](H2O) (1), [Cu2(4-ClB)2(H2tea)2](H2O) (2), and [Cu2(4-ETHB)2(H2tea)2](H2O)2 (3) (where DIFLB = difluorobenzoate, CLB = chlorobenzoate, ETHB = ethoxybenzoate, and H3tea = triethanolamine), were isolated at room temperature using methanol and water in a 4 : 1 v/v ratio as a solvent. Furthermore, all three complexes (1-3) were characterised using spectroscopic (UV-vis, DRS, and FT-IR), electrochemical (CV) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Structural insights gained by packing analysis revealed the role of steric constraints of substituents and various non-covalent interactions in lattice stabilization, which were indeed supported by theoretical and molecular electrostatic potential illustrations. Hirshfeld surface analysis provided quantitative verification about various non-covalent interactions (interatomic contacts) involved in the packing of molecules. Interestingly, as a potential application, complexes 1-3 all exhibited remarkable visible light-mediated photo-Fenton degradation of approximately 98% for 50 ppm concentration of organic dyes (fuchsin basic (FB) and methyl orange (MO)) in 90 minutes with the optimized conditions of 1 mg mL-1 of dye solution. In all the cases, dye degradation by these materials was ascribed to the symbiotic relations among the molecular structures of complexes 1-3, which were endowed with various electron-withdrawing and electron-releasing substituents and ionic strength, with respect to the structure, shape and interacting patterns of dye molecules. The adsorption mechanism indicates that various weak interactions between the donor and acceptor groups of complexes and dyes, such as electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and direct coordination to metal sites, play a crucial role, which is confirmed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Theoretical studies by DFT-based descriptors, molecular electrostatic potentials, and band gaps provided deep insights into various electronic and reactivity parameters. For subsequent processes of dye degradation, complexes 1-3 were stable and recoverable. The successful integration of experimental and theoretical approaches sheds light on copper-based dinuclear stable coordination complexes, showcasing a significant step towards the development of novel heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts.

A piperazine- modified Schiff base sensor for highly selective detection of Zr (IV) ions: unveiling its antioxidant potential and regulatory effects on Zea mays growth

Piperazine functionalized Schiff bases 4(a-c) were synthesized by a condensation reaction which were thoroughly characterized by using various spectroscopic techniques like 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR and mass spectrometry. X-ray crystallography was used to analyse synthesized compound 4b. The sensing capability of 4b was investigated towards the tetravalent form of the zirconium ion among other metal ions. The limit of detection and the association constant, were calculated to be 56.4 × 10-8 M and 5.36 × 105 M-1 respectively. The inclusion of additional metal ions had no effect on the selectivity of sensor 4b. The binding mechanism was clarified using 1HNMR spectroscopy, which was further verified computationally, using DFT. Also, the seed germination experiments were performed and effect of compound 4b was analyzed on the seedlings of Zea Mays. An investigation into molecular docking study using (5HQX) protein revealed that it had inhibitory effects on cytokinin oxidase. The protein and ligand effectively associate, as indicated by the lower binding energy of -9.69 kcal/mol. Therefore, compound 4b can act as a good, powerful inhibitor against cytokinin oxidase.

Characterization, Antioxidant, and Antimicrobial Properties of Mulberry Lattices

In order to find the most advantageous bioactive compounds from mulberry latex for drug development in the near future, this study was conducted to characterize and evaluate antioxidant and antimicrobial properties from four different mulberry lattices (BR-2, S-1, AR-14, and S-146). The characterization of the lattices was performed by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Further, screenings of the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of selected lattices were performed in vitro using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay and agar well diffusion methods, respectively. Interestingly, the outcome of the current study revealed that tested mulberry lattices contain a considerable amount of bioactive phytoconstituents, particularly antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds, as revealed by chromatographic analysis. BR-2 latex was found to have significant antioxidant activity (75%) followed by S-146 (64.6%) and AR-14 (52.9%). The maximum antimicrobial activity was found in BR-2 latex compared to other tested latex varieties. The results of this investigation showed that mulberry latex from the BR-2 type may successfully control both bacterial and fungal infections, with the added benefit of having enhanced antioxidant capabilities.

Imipenem-metal complexes: Computational analysis and toxicity studies with wastewater model microorganisms

The occurrence of antibiotic residues in diverse water sources has long been acknowledged as a potential health concern due to the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. However, there have been limited studies into the presence of antibiotic-metal complexes (AMCs) in real-time wastewater matrices, and their impact on wastewater microbial communities. The present work, in this regard, investigated the stability of Imipenem-metal complexes (Me = Mg (II), Ca (II), Fe (II), Cu (II), and Al (III)) with computational studies, stoichiometry with potentiometric measurements, and their antibacterial activity towards wastewater model microorganisms- Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) and Escherichia coli (E. Coli) by Colony Forming Unit (CFU) method. The lower energy of Imipenem-metal complexes than the parent antibiotic- Imipenem, during energy optimization using density functional (DFT) methods, revealed that metal interactions of Imipenem stabilize the drug by minimizing its energy. Further, CFU studies indicated that these complexes display higher antimicrobial activity than parent antibiotics. The electron delocalization over the entire chelated system (AMCs) reduces polarity and increases the lipophilicity of the complexes, thereby facilitating stronger interaction between AMCs and the bacterial cell membrane. Results indicate increased antibacterial activity of Imipenem-metal complexes for both E. coli and B. subtilis. The antibacterial activity, was however, more pronounced in B. subtilis, with >97% growth inhibition for metal complexes of Imipenem (at a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 20 nM or 6 ppb (i.e., MIC90)), for both the stoichiometric ratios (metal to ligand) ratios (M: L 1: 1 and 2: 1). All around, with increased stability and toxicity, AMCs are emerging as contaminants of concern and demand immediate attention to devise methods for their removal.

Synthesis, characterization, biological activity and computation-based efficacy of cobalt(II) complexes of biphenyl-2-ol against SARS-CoV-2 virus

Cobalt(II) complexes of biphenyl-2-ol of composition, CoCl2-n(OC6H4C6H5-2)n(H2O)4 (where n = 1 or 2), were prepared by reacting cobaltous(II) chloride with equi- and bimolar ratios of sodium salt of biphenyl-2-ol. The structural characterization of the synthesized complexes was accomplished by NMR, FTIR, thermogravimetry (TGA), high resolution mass spectroscopy (HRMS), electronic spectroscopic techniques coupled with density functional theory (DFT). The stability of the complexes in different pH media of solvent was studied. Chemical reactivity parameters of the newly synthesized complexes, computed using DFT, indicated greater reactivity of complex 2 over complex 1 and free ligand as indicated by its low HOMO-LUMO energy gap corresponding to 1.71 eV. Molecular docking (MD) studies were carried out in order to study the binding affinities between amino acid residues of DNA duplex (PDB ID: 1BNA) and SARS-CoV-2 (PDB ID: 7T9K) with newly synthesized complexes. Complex 2 has shown promising antivirus behaviour with an inhibition constant value of 0.0423 µmol-1 with amino acid residues of SARS-CoV-2 virus. Toxicity of the complexes was predicted using ProTox-II online server. Antibacterial studies have indicated the complexes to exhibit greater efficacy than the free ligand, while the antioxidant activities have suggested them to display enhanced antioxidant behaviour as compared to reference compounds.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Synthesis, structural characterization, antioxidant, cytotoxic activities and docking studies of schiff base Cu(II) complexes

By combining hydrazide with 2-Acetylpyridine, a hydrazone ligand (HL) was successfully created. Several copper (II) salts have been used to create three copper (II) hydrazone complexes (acetate, sulphate, and chloride). The hydrazide ligand and its copper (II) complexes (1-3) were studied via variety of analytical techniques, including elemental analysis, electronic, infrared, UV-vis Spectrum, XRD study, thermal analysis, also molar conductivity amounts. The spectrum results indicate that in all complexes, the ligand exhibits monobasic tridentate behavior. Octahedral geometries were present in all metal complexes. The Coats-Redfern equations were used to compute and describe the dynamics properties of several steps of TGA (Ea, A, ΔH*, ΔS*, and ΔG*). Calculations using the density functional theory (DFT) were done at the molecular studio software toward examine ligands agent's and its complexes' best structures. The MCF-7 in addition to HepG-2 cell lines was resistant to tumor-inducing effects of the copper (II) chelates. The in vitro antioxidant capacities of all complexes have been estimated via DPPH free radical scavenger assays. Furthermore, zones of inhibition length accustomed to test antimicrobial effect of particular complexes in vitro towards Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive bacteria) E. coli (Gram negative bacteria). Both absorption spectra and viscosity measurements in calf thymus DNA binding have been used to study the complexes. In order to explore docking research of copper (II) chelates, the crystallographic construction of the SARS-active CoV-2's site protein (PDB ID:6XBH) was used (COVID-19) and breast cancer distorted (PDB ID: 3hb5).

Synthesis of a Au/Au NPs-PPy/l-CYs/ZIF-8 nanocomposite electrode for voltammetric determination of insulin in human blood

In this work, a modified electrode named Au/Au NPs-PPy/l-CYs/ZIF-8 was designed and built and simultaneously doped into electropolymerized polypyrrole (PPy) film using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and CV were used to characterize the composite films. The PPy-(ZIF-8) modified Au electrode was used to determine insulin using Square-Wave Voltammetry (SWV). It was found that the prepared zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 had excellent electrocatalytic activity towards insulin oxidation due to its unique properties. The oxidation peak current of insulin hormone increased with its concentration in the range from 1.0 to 60 nM with the linear regression equation: Ipa = 0.3421C (nM) + 3.2762 (γ = 0.998). The measurement limit was estimated to be 1 nM. While the common coexisting substances showed no interference in the response of the modified electrode to insulin, the modified electrode indicated reproducible behavior and a high level of stability during the experiments. The advantages of using these nanocomposites on the surface of modified electrodes include increased stability, good interaction between the analyte and the modified electrode, conductivity, and excellent performance due to the nanometer size of the composites. As a result, it may be particularly suitable for analytical purposes.

Synthesis, characterization, DFT calculations and biological activity of new Schiff base complexes

Schiff bases ligand (HL) was produced by condensing 4-aminobenzohydrazide with N-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(4-formylphenoxy)acetamide. Cobalt (II), nickel (II), and copper (II) acetate and ligand are reacted to form 1:1 complexes. By using electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility measurements, infrared data from 1H NMR, and XRD studies, the ligand and its metal complexes have been characterized. According to the spectrum data, the ligand functions as a monobasic bidentate, coordinating with the nitrogen atom of azomethine (-C[bond, double bond]N-) group and the oxygen atom of carbonyl group in enol form. An octahedral structure has been proposed for Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) complexes according to magnetic and electronic spectrum analysis. Using the DFT method, the computational investigations of the ligand and its metal complexes showed the bond lengths, bond angles, and quantum chemical parameters. To determine the thermal stability and mode of thermal degradation of hydrazone ligand and its complexes, thermogravimetric analysis was approved out on the samples. Two calculated method, Horowitz-Metzger and Coats-Redfern, were used to calculate the characteristics of the composites' thermal degradation mechanisms at each step, including their breakdown kinetics. The ligand and its complexes were investigated for their cytotoxicity in vitro compared to human amnion (WISH) and epitheliod carcinoma (Hela). The Ni(II) complex showed highly inhibition against (WISH) growth (IC50 = 18.28±1.8 μM) with relationship to the produced chemicals and other common medications. The interaction between the ligand and its complexes with the genetic tumor (3hb5) receptor was examined using docking experiments.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and antimicrobial evaluation of new mononuclear mixed ligand complexes based on furfural-type imine ligand, and 2,2'-bipyridine

The present investigation goal was to investigate the chemistry of four new mononuclear mixed ligand Fe(III), Co(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) complexes constructed from furfural-type imine ligand (L), and the co ligand 2,2'-bipyridine in addition to assessing their antimicrobial activity against some bacterial, and fungi strains. The structure of the complexes was interpreted by different spectroscopic techniques such as MS, IR, ¹H NMR, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, TG-DTG, conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The correlation of all results revealed that ligand (L) acts as a neutral ONNO tetradentate whereas the co ligand acts as a neutral NN bidentate. The coordination of the ligands with the metal ions in a molar ratio of 1:1:1 leads to formation of an octahedral geometry around the metal ions. The octahedral geometry has been validated and optimized by DFT analysis. Conductivity data showed the electrolytic nature of all complexes. The thermal stability of all complexes was deduced in addition to evaluating some thermodynamic, and kinetic parameters using Coats-Redfern method. Furthermore, all complexes in comparison to their parent ligands were tested for their biological potency against some pathogenic bacterial, and fungi strains using the paper disk diffusion method. [CdL(bpy)](NO₃)₂ complex revealed the highest antimicrobial activity.

Data analysis for SEM-EDX, thermokinetics, surfactant, and corrosion inhibition activity of Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes of pyrrole-based surfactant ligand

This manuscript reports a dataset for the scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), surfactant properties, thermokinetics, and corrosion inhibition activity of [[Co(HL)₂.2H₂O] Cl₂.H₂O]] (1) and [[Zn(HL)₂.Cl] Cl.3H₂O]] (2) complexes with surfactant-based Schiff base ligand (HL). It contains analyzed data related to thermokinetics, such as the activation energy (E*), entropy change (∆S*), enthalpy change (∆H*), and free energy change (∆G*) of HL and metal complexes. It also contains the SEM micrographs and EDX images of the studied ligand and metal complexes. A detailed analysis of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) data and figures illustrating the surfactant behavior of the synthesized complexes are presented in this article. The data for the corrosion inhibition activity of all synthesized compounds are also included. The dataset is related to the research article entitled "Bioinorganic interest on Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes of pyrrole-based surfactant ligand: Synthesis, characterization, and in silico-ADME study".

Spectroscopic investigation, thermal behavior, catalytic reduction, biological and computational studies of novel four transition metal complexes based on 5-methylthiophene Schiff base type

Four new complexes prepared from 5-Methyl-2-carboxaldehyde-thiophene and 2,6-pyridinediamine with cobalt, nickel, copper and cadmium ions have been synthesized because of the significance of these complexes in pharmacological research and catalytic reduction. The prepared compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, mass, UV-visible, NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, as well as molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements, fluorescence properties and TGA analysis. The stoichiometry mode was confirmed as 1:1 (metal: ligand) for Co, Ni and Cu complexes and 1:2 (metal: ligand) for Cd complex according to the results of the elemental and spectral studies. Furthermore, the thermal stability and luminescence properties of complexes have been studied. Thermal studies confirmed the presence of water molecules. The thermodynamic properties of the complexes were measured via the Coats-Redfern procedure. The geometric structures of the complexes were found to be octahedral around the metal ions. The optical energy gaps (Eopt) vary between 2.92 and 3.71 eV indicating that these compounds can be used as selective absorbing solar energy in photovoltaic applications. In the presence of NaBH₄, the greatest reduction efficiency for the conversion of 2-NP to 2-AP was discovered to be 73-91% within 15-25 min. In vitro, high antifungal and antibacterial activity was shown by complexes than the ligand alone. The Cd(II) complex was shown to have greater activity than all of the examined microorganisms when compared to the reference drug in addition it had 4.94 μg/ml minimal inhibitory concentration against "S. aureus", "B. subtilis", and "E. coli". The bond angles, bond lengths, and quantum chemical factors of the ligand and complexes were shown in the molecular modeling using the DFT approach. The studied compounds' binding modes were confirmed using the Gaussian 09 program.

A Comprehensive Approach to Derivatization: Elemental Composition, Biochemical, and In Silico Studies of Metformin Derivatives Containing Copper and Zinc Complexes

The current study was designed to synthesize, characterize, and screen the molecular and biological activities of different metformin derivatives that possess potent antidiabetic potential with minimal side-effects. Metformin-based derivatives containing the metal complexes Cu II (MCu1-MCu9) and Zn II (MZn1-MZn9) were generated using aromatic aldehydes and ketones in a template process. The novel metal complexes were characterized through elemental analysis, physical state, melting point, physical appearance, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV/visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy, ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy. Screening for inhibitory activity against the enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase, and molecular simulations performed in Schrödinger were used to assess the synthesized derivatives' biological potential. Met1, Met2, Met3, and Met8 all displayed activities that were on par with the reference in an enzymatic inhibition assay (amylase and glucosidase). The enzyme inhibition assay was corroborated by molecular simulation studies, which also revealed a competitive docking score compared to the gold standard. The Swiss ADME online web server was utilized to compute ADME properties of metformin analogues. Lipinski's rule of five held true across all derivatives, making it possible to determine the percentage of absorption. Metformin derivatives showed significant antidiabetic activities against both targeted enzymes, and the results of this work suggest that these compounds could serve as lead molecules for future study and development.

Structural and theoretical investigations, Hirshfeld surface analysis and anti-SARS CoV-2 of nickel (II) coordination complex

A nickel(II) Schiff base complex, [Ni(L)(DMF)](1), was synthesized by treating NiCl₂.6H₂O with an ONS-donor Schiff base ligand(H₂L) derived from the condensation 3,5-Dichlorosalicylaldehyde and 4,4-Dimethyl-3-thiosemicarbazide in DMF. The geometry around the center metal ion in [Ni(L)(DMF)](1) was square planar as revealed by the data collection from diffraction studies. DFT calculations were performed on the complex to get a structure-property relationship. Hirshfeld surface analysis was also carried out in the crystal structure of nickel (II) Schiff base complex. Additionally, inspiring from recent developments to find a potential inhibitor for SARS-CoV-2 virus, we have also performed molecular docking study of [Ni(L)(DMF)](1) to see if our novel complex show affinity for main protease (M^pro) of SARS-CoV-2 M^pro (PDB ID: 6LZE). Interestingly, the results are found quite encouraging where the binding affinity and inhibition constant was found to be -6.6 kcal/mol and 2.358 µM, respectively, for the best docked confirmation of complex [Ni(L)(DMF)](1) with M^pro protein. This binding affinity is reasonably well as compared to recently known antiviral drugs. For instance, the binding affinity of complex [Ni(L)(DMF)](1) is found to be better than that of recently docking results of anti-SARS-CoV-2 drugs like chloroquine (-6.293 kcal/mol), hydroxychloroquine (-5.573 kcal/mol) and remdesivir (-6.352 kcal/mol) when targeted to the active-site of SARS-CoV-2 M^pro. Besides this, molecular docking against G25K GTP-nucleotide binding protein (PDB ID: 1A4R) was also studied. We believe that current results can intrigue not only for the biomedical community but also for the materials chemists who are engaged to explore the application coordination complexes. Preparation, physicochemical characterization, molecular docking and biological activity of a novel schiff-base and organophosphorus schiff base with some transition metal(II) ions

The two synthesis of Schiff base SB (Indole-3-carboxalidene-1-phenylsemicarbazide) and organophosphorus Schiff base OPSB (Indole-3-carboxalidene diphenylphosphate-1-phenylsemicarbazide) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, UV–Vis and XRD. A series of complexes of the type [M(SB)2Cl2].2H2O and [M(OPSB)Cl.(H2O)2].Cl, where M = Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) have been synthesized and the chemical structures of them were established by magnetic susceptibility, conductance measurements, elemental analyses, IR, UV–Vis. These results suggest that the metal complexes have octahedral geometry. X-ray powder diffraction analysis of ligands and SB complexes indicate that they are crystalline in nature and within nano range. The molecular docking of [Co(OPSB)Cl.(H2O)2].Cl is discussed using MOE software to understand the binding pattern of the investigated compound towards target proteins Bacillus subtilis (PDB ID: 2RHL), Staphylococcus aureus (PDB ID: 4URM), Escherichia coli (PDB ID: 4PRV), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PDB ID: 4JVI). All compounds have been evaluated for their antimicrobial. The ligands and OPSB complexes showed high antioxidant activity.

Novel chiral Schiff base Palladium(II), Nickel(II), Copper(II) and Iron(II) complexes: Synthesis, characterization, anticancer activity and molecular docking studies

In this study, two chiral Schiff base ligands (L1 and L2) were synthesized from the condensation reaction of (S)-2-amino-3-phenyl-1-propanol with 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde as metal precursors for the preparation of transition metal complexes with Pd(II), Fe(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II). The compounds were characterized by using X-ray (for L1-Pd(II)), NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility, molar conductivity, and elemental analysis. The in vitro cytotoxic effects of ligands (L1 and L2) and their metal complexes on colon cancer cells (DLD-1), breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) and healthy lung human cell lines were investigated by using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5‑diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Among the synthesized compounds, L1-Pd(II) was particularly found to be the most potent anticancer drug candidate in this series with IC50 values of 4.07, and 9.97 µM in DLD-1 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, respectively. In addition, molecular docking results indicate that Glu122, Asn103, Ala104, Lys126, Phe114, Leu123, and Lys126 amino acids are the binding site of the colon cancer antigen protein, in which the most active complex, L1-Pd(II) can inhibit the current target.

Thermodynamic and structural profiles of multi-target binding of vinblastine in solution

Structural information about drug-receptor interactions is paramount in drug discovery and subsequent optimization processes. Drugs can bind to multiple potential targets as they contain common chemical entities in their structures. Understanding the details of such interactions offer possibilities for repurposing and developing potent inhibitors of disease pathways. Vinblastine (VLB) is a potent anticancer molecule showing multiple receptor interactions with different affinities and degrees of structural perturbations. We have investigated the multi-target binding profile of VLB with DNA and human serum albumin (HSA) in a dynamic physiological environment using spectroscopic, molecular dynamics simulations, and quantum mechanical calculations to evaluate the structural features, mode, ligand and receptor flexibility, and energetics of complexation. These results confirm that VLB prefers to bind in the major groove of DNA with some inclination toward Thymidine residue and the TR-5 binding site in HSA with its catharanthine half making important contacts with both the receptors. Spectroscopic investigation at multiple temperatures has also proved that VLB binding is entropy driven indicating the major groove and TR-5 binding site of interaction. Finally, the overall binding is facilitated by van der Waals contacts and a few conventional H-bonds. VLB portrays reasonable conformational diversity on binding with multiple receptors.

Spectrophotometric determination of Zr(IV), Hg(II) and U(VI) in solution with their analytical applications: Structural characterization and molecular docking of the solid complexes

Spectrophotometry was used to determine trace amounts of Zirconium(IV), Mercury(II) and Uranium(VI) in environmental, biological, pharmaceutical and industrial samples. The determination depend on the complexation reactions between albendazole reagent and metal ions [Zr(IV), Hg(II) and U(VI)] at 555 nm, 485 nm and 510 nm, respectively. The experimental conditions were explored to reach the optimum conditions for albendazole-metal ions interaction, including detection of a suitable wavelength, medium (pH), reagent concentration, surfactants effect, reaction time and temperature. Under optimum conditions, the complexes displayed apparent molar absorptivities of 0.8350 × 10⁴, 0.6210 × 10⁴ and 0.7012 × 10⁴ L mol^-1 cm^-1; Sandell's sensitivity of 0.01092, 0.03230 and 0.03394 µg cm^-2 and with linearity ranges of 1.0-120.0, 3.0-200.0 and 1.0-150.0 µg mL^-1 for the developed methods, respectively. Furthermore, Elemental analysis, thermal analysis (TGA, DTG), IR, ¹HNMR, spectroscopies, electrical molar conductivity and magnetic moment measurements were used to determine the structures and characteristics of the complexes. A careful examination of the IR spectra revealed that the ligand interacted with all of the metal ions described as a bidentate via the oxygen of the carbonyl of the ester moiety and the nitrogen atom of the heterocyclic CN group. An octahedral geometry for Zr(IV), Hg(II) and U(VI) complexes has been postulated based on magnetic and electronic spectrum data. The band gap values indicated that these complexes were semi-conductors and belong to the same class of extremely effective solar materials. The albendazole ligand and its complexes have been biologically tested against a variety of bacterial and fungal strains, and molecular docking studies have been conducted to evaluate the optimal binding site and its inhibitory action.

Charge-transfer chemistry of two corticosteroids used adjunctively to treat COVID-19. Part II: The CT reaction of hydrocortisone and dexamethasone donors with TCNQ and fluoranil acceptors in five organic solvents

Hydrocortisone (termed as D1) and dexamethasone (termed as D2) are corticosteroids currently used to treat COVID-19. COVID-19 is a disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Exploring additional chemical properties of drugs used in the treatment protocols for COVID-19 could help scientists alike improve these treatment protocols and potentially even the vaccines (i.e., Janssen, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech). In this work, the charge-transfer (CT) properties of these two corticosteroids (D1 and D2) with two universal acceptors: 7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (termed as TCNQ) and fluoranil (termed as TFQ) in five different solvents were investigated. The examined solvents were MeOH, EtOH, MeCN, CH₂Cl₂, and CHCl₃. The CT interactions formed stable corticosteroid CT complexes in all examined solvents. Several spectroscopic parameters were derived, and the oscillator strength (f) and transition dipole moment (μ_e.g.) values revealed that the interaction between the investigated corticosteroids with TCNQ acceptor is much stronger than their interaction with TFQ acceptor. The CT interactions were proposed to process via n → π* transition.

Development of Metal Complexes for Treatment of Coronaviruses

Coronavirus disease (SARS-CoV-2) is a global epidemic. This pandemic, which has been linked to high rates of death, has forced some countries throughout the world to implement complete lockdowns in order to contain the spread of infection. Because of the advent of new coronavirus variants, it is critical to find effective treatments and vaccines to prevent the virus’s rapid spread over the world. In this regard, metal complexes have attained immense interest as antibody modifiers and antiviral therapies, and they have a lot of promise towards SARS-CoV-2 and their suggested mechanisms of action are discussed, i.e., a new series of metal complexes’ medicinal vital role in treatment of specific proteins or SARS-CoV-2 are described. The structures of the obtained metal complexes were fully elucidated by different analytical and spectroscopic techniques also. Molecular docking and pharmacophore studies presented that most of complexes studied influenced good binding affinity to the main protease SARS-CoV-2, which also was attained as from the RCSB pdb (Protein Data Bank) data PDB ID: 6 W41, to expect the action of metal complexes in contradiction of COVID-19. Experimental research is required to determine the pharmacokinetics of most of the complexes analyzed for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2-related disease. Finally, the toxicity of a metal-containing inorganic complex will thus be discussed by its capability to transfer metals which may bind with targeted site.

Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Activities of New Schiff Base Compound and Its Lanthanide Complexes

The thermal condensation of 3-(2-Furyl)acrolein with 2-Amino-6-ethoxybenzothiazole generated a new Schiff base, (1E,2E)-N-(6-ethoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(furan-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-imine (L), with general formula of C16H14N2O2S. Also, a series of lanthanide complexes of gadolinium, samarium, and neodymium (La–Lc) were synthesized utilizing acetonitrile as the solvent and triethylamine as a buffer and catalyst. Based on elemental analysis, mass spectroscopy, and FTIR analysis, all of the Bis-(1E,2E)-N-(6-ethoxybenzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(furan-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-iminetri-nitratolanthanide(III) complexes with the general formula [LnL2(NO3)3]·H2O are solids with a 2:1 molar ratio (ligand: metal). Based on conductivity estimates, they are nonelectrolytes and monoatomic paramagnetic according to the magnetic moment measurements, and one mole of lattice water was found after thermal gravimetric measurements and FTIR analysis. Therefore, the lanthanide complexes show a ten-coordination structure with a deformed bicapped square antiprismatic. The Schiff base and its complexes were screened for their antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and antitumor properties. Their antimicrobial and antifungal activities were strong, and they also produced good antioxidant and antitumor effects.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Activities of Novel Vanadium(IV) and Cobalt(II) Complexes

Herein, we report novel Co(II) and V(IV) complexes synthesized from an (E)-2-(((2-((2-hydroxyethyl)amino)quinolin-3-yl)methylene)amino)ethan-1-ol ligand (L), cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate, and vanadyl(IV) sulfate in methanolic solutions. The ligand and the complexes were characterized by ¹H NMR spectroscopy,¹³C NMR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), mass spectroscopy (MS), thermal analysis, and molar conductance. The FT-IR spectral data showed that the ligand adopted a tridentate fashion when binding with the metal ions via the nitrogen atoms of the imine (C=N) and amine (N-H), and the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group (O-H). The PXRD and SEM results indicated that the complexes are amorphous in nature. The density functional theory (DFT) calculated absorption and IR spectra agree very well with the corresponding experimental results. The antibacterial activities of the free ligand and its complexes were evaluated using a paper disk diffusion method. The complexes have better percent activitiy index than the free ligand. The cobalt complex exhibited a more recognizable antibacterial activity than the vanadium complex, specifically against Pseudomonas aeruginosa with a mean inhibition zone of 18.62 ± 0.19 mm, when compared with the positive control, ciprofloxacin, with a mean inhibition zone of 22.98 ± 0.08 mm at the same concentration. Furthermore, the antioxidant activities of the free ligand and its metal complexes were also determined in vitro using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. The ligand exhibited less in vitro antioxidant activity than its transition metal complexes, in which the cobalt complex has a better antioxidant activity with half-inhibitory concentrations (IC₅₀ of 16.01 μg/mL) than the ligand and the vanadium complex. Quantum molecular descriptors from the DFT calculations further support the experimental results. Molecular docking analysis also shed more light on the biological activities of the novel cobalt and vanadium complexes.

Catalytic Neutralization of Water Pollutants Mediated by Dendritic Polymers

Radially polymerized dendritic compounds are nowadays an established polymer category next to their linear, branched, and cross-linked counterparts. Their uncommon tree-like architecture is characterized by adjustable internal cavities and external groups. They are therefore exceptional absorbents and this attainment of high concentrations in their interior renders them ideal reaction media. In this framework, they are applied in many environmentally benign implementations. One of the most important among them is water purification through pollutant decomposition. Simple and composite catalysts and photo-catalysts containing dendritic polymers and applied in water remediation will be discussed jointly with some unconventional solutions and prospects.

Effective corrosion inhibition of mild steel in hydrochloric acid by newly synthesized Schiff base nano Co(ii) and Cr(iii) complexes: spectral, thermal, electrochemical and DFT (FMO, NBO) studies

Two new cobalt(ii) and chromium(iii) complexes were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, ¹HNMR, UV, elemental analysis, TGA, conductivity, XRD, SEM, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Structural analysis revealed a bi-dentate chelation and octahedral geometry for the synthesized complexes. The optical band gap of the Co(ii)-L and Cr(iii)-L complexes was found to be 3.00 and 3.25 eV, respectively revealing semiconducting properties. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed nano-crystalline particles for the obtained complexes. In addition, the synthesized metal complexes were examined as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in HCl solution. The electrochemical investigations showed a maximum inhibition efficiency of 96.60% for Co(ii)-L and 95.45% for Cr(iii)-L where both complexes acted as mixed-type inhibitors. Frontier Molecular orbital (FMO) and Natural bond orbital (NBO) computations showed good tendency of the ligand to donate electrons to the metal through nitrogen atoms while the resultant complexes tended to donate electrons to mild steel more effectively through oxygen atoms and phenyl groups. A comparison between experimental and theoretical findings was considered through the discussion.

Structure-based design and synthesis of copper(ii) complexes as antivirus drug candidates targeting SARS CoV-2 and HIV

This paper describes the structure-based design and synthesis of two novel square-planar trans-N2O2 Cu(ii) complexes [Cu(L1)2] (1) and [Cu(L2)2] (2) of 2-((Z)-(4-methoxyphenylimino)methyl)-4,6-dichlorophenol (L1H) and 2-((Z)-(2,4-dibromophenylimino)methyl)-4-bromophenol (L2H) as potential inhibitors against the main protease of the SARS-CoV-2 and HIV viruses.

Synthesis and characterization of novel copper(ii) complexes as potential drug candidates against SARS-CoV-2 main protease

Two novel copper(ii) Schiff base complexes, [Cu(L1)2] (1) and [Cu(L2)(CH3OH)(Cl)] (2) of [(Z)-(5-chloro-2-((3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)phenyl)(phenyl)methanone (L1H) and (Z)-(2((5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino-5-chlorophenyl)(phenyl)methanone)(L2H)], have been designed, synthesized and characterized.

Synthesis, crystal structure, computational study and anti-virus effect of mixed ligand copper (II) complex with ONS donor Schiff base and 1, 10-phenanthroline

This work deals with the synthesis, crystal structure, computational study and antiviral potential of mixed ligand copper(II) complex [Cu(L)(phen)](1), (where, H₂L = (Z)-N'-((E)-2-hydroxy-3,5-diiodobenzylidene)-N,N-dimethylcarbamohydrazonothioic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The Schiff base ligand (H₂L) is coordinated with Cu(II) ion in O, N, S-tridentate mode. The copper complex (1) crystallized in the monoclinic system of the space group P21/c with eight molecules in the unit cell and reveals a square pyramidal geometry. Furthermore, we also perform quantum chemical calculations to get insights into the structure-property relationship and functional properties of ligand (H₂L) and its copper (II) complex [Cu(L)(phen)](1). Complex [Cu(L)(phen)](1) was also virtually designed in-silico evaluation by Swiss-ADME. Additionally, inspiring by recent developments to find a potential inhibitor for the COVID-19 virus, we have also performed molecular docking study of ligand and its copper complex (1) to see if our compounds shows an affinity for the main protease (M^pro) of COVID-19 spike protein (PDB ID: 7C8U). Interestingly, the results are found quite encouraging where the binding affinity and inhibition constant were found to be -7.14 kcal/mol and 5.82 μM for ligand (H₂L) and -6.18 kcal/mol and 0.76 μM for complex [Cu(L)(phen)](1) with M^pro protein. This binding affinity is reasonably well as compared to recently known antiviral drugs. For instance, the binding affinity of ligand and complex was found to be better than docking results of chloroquine (-6.293 kcal/mol), hydroxychloroquine (-5.573 kcal/mol) and remdesivir (-6.352 kcal/mol) with M^pro protein. The present study may offer the technological solutions and potential inhibition to the COVID-19 virus in the ongoing and future challenges of the global community. In the framework of synthesis and characterization of mixed ligand copper (II) complex; the major conclusions can be drawn as follow.
