Interactions of natural colloids with microplastics in aquatic environment and its impact on FTIR characterization of Polyethylene and Polystyrene microplastics

Adsorption behavior of triazine pesticides on polystyrene microplastics aging with different processes in natural environment

The presence of microplastics in the ecological environment, serving as carriers for other organic pollutants, has garnered widespread attention. These microplastics exposed in the environment may undergo various aging processes. However, there is still a lack of information regarding how these aged microplastics impact the environmental behavior and ecological toxicity of pollutants. In this study, we modified polystyrene microplastics by simulating the aging behavior that may occur under environmental exposure, and then explored the adsorption behavior and adsorption mechanism of microplastics before and after aging for typical triazine herbicides. It was shown that all aging treatments of polystyrene increased the adsorption of herbicides, the composite aged microplastics had the strongest adsorption capacity and the fastest adsorption rate, and of the three herbicides, metribuzin was adsorbed the most by microplastics. The interactions between microplastics and herbicides involved mechanisms such as hydrophobic interactions, surface adsorption, the effect of π-π interactions, and the formation of hydrogen bonds. Further studies confirmed that microplastics adsorbed with herbicides cause greater biotoxicity to E. coli. These findings elucidate the interactions between microplastics before and after aging and triazine herbicides. Acting as carriers, they alter the environmental behavior and ecological toxicity of organic pollutants, providing theoretical support for assessing the ecological risk of microplastics in water environments.

Advancing microplastic surveillance through photoacoustic imaging and deep learning techniques

Microplastic contamination presents a significant global environmental threat, yet scientific understanding of its morphological distribution within ecosystems remains limited. This study introduces a pioneering method for comprehensive microplastic assessment and environmental monitoring, integrating photoacoustic imaging and advanced deep learning techniques. Rigorous curation of diverse microplastic datasets enhances model training, yielding a high-resolution imaging dataset focused on shape-based discrimination. The introduction of the Vector-Quantized Variational Auto Encoder (VQVAE2) deep learning model signifies a substantial advancement, demonstrating exceptional proficiency in image dimensionality reduction and clustering. Furthermore, the utilization of Vector Quantization Microplastic Photoacoustic imaging (VQMPA) with a proxy task before decoding enhances feature extraction, enabling simultaneous microplastic analysis and discrimination. Despite inherent limitations, this study lays a robust foundation for future research, suggesting avenues for enhancing microplastic identification precision through expanded sample sizes and complementary methodologies like spectroscopy. In conclusion, this innovative approach not only advances microplastic monitoring but also provides valuable insights for future environmental investigations, highlighting the potential of photoacoustic imaging and deep learning in bolstering sustainable environmental monitoring efforts.

Microplastics weaken the exoskeletal mechanical properties of Pacific whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

The ubiquitous presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments poses a significant threat to crustaceans. Although exoskeleton quality is critical for crustacean survival, the impact of MPs on crustacean exoskeletons remains elusive. Our study represents a pioneering effort to characterize the effects of MPs exposure on crustacean exoskeletons. In this study, the mechanical properties of whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei exoskeletons were analyzed after exposure to environmentally realistic levels of MPs. Nanoindentation data demonstrated that MPs exposure significantly increased the hardness and modulus of both the carapace and abdominal segments of L. vannamei. Moreover, fractures and embedded MPs were detected on the exoskeleton surface using SEM-EDS analysis. Further analysis demonstrated that the degree of chitin acetylation (DA) in the shrimp exoskeleton, as indicated by FTIR peaks, was reduced by MPs exposure. In addition, exposure to MPs significantly inhibited the muscle Ca2+-ATPase activity and hemolymph calcium levels. Transcriptome and metabolome analyses revealed that the expression levels of genes encoding key enzymes and metabolites in the chitin biosynthetic pathway were significantly affected by MPs exposure. In conclusion, MPs at environmentally relevant concentrations may affect the exoskeletal mechanical properties of L. vannamei through a comprehensive mechanism involving the disruption of the crystalline structure of chitin, assimilation into the exoskeleton, and dysregulation of exoskeleton biosynthesis-related pathways.

Polystyrene microplastics interaction and influence on the growth kinetics and metabolism of tilapia gut probiotic Bacillus tropicus ACS1

Gut probiotic bacteria play a significant role in the host health, immunity, and survival. In aquaculture, changes in the gut microbiome of fishes affect the overall productivity and product quality. In the scenario of growing plastic pollution and associated microplastic prevalence, the current study was designed to investigate the interactions and impact of prepared polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) of irregular surface morphology on a probiotic bacteria Bacillus tropicus ACS1, isolated from the gut of Oreochromis mossambicus (commonly called as Tilapia). The cell viability was significantly increased along with changes in bacterial growth kinetics upon exposure to varying concentrations of PS-MPs. The microplastic exposure also increased the production of exopolysaccharides (EPS) and induced slight changes in the IR spectra of the EPS. A peak representing a carbonyl linkage that could be attributed to the glycosidic linkages between sugars disappeared following exposure to higher concentrations of PS-MPs. The interaction between the bacteria and the microplastics was visualized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the colonization of the bacteria with active biofilm formation was observed. The investigation of PS-MP induced oxidative stress in the bacteria revealed the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increase in anti-oxidant enzyme concentrations, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase. The study provides new insights into the effect of microplastics on gut probiotics of an economically significant aquaculture species.

Microplastic interactions in the agroecosystems: methodological advances and limitations in quantifying microplastics from agricultural soil

The instantaneous growth of the world population is intensifying the pressure on the agricultural sector. On the other hand, the critical climate changes and increasing load of pollutants in the soil are imposing formidable challenges on agroecosystems, affecting productivity and quality of the crops. Microplastics are among the most prevalent pollutants that have already invaded all terrestrial and aquatic zones. The increasing microplastic concentration in soil critically impacts crop plants growth and yield. The current review elaborates on the behaviors of microplastics in soil and their impact on soil quality and plant growth. The study shows that microplastics alter the soil's biophysical properties, including water-holding capacity, bulk density, aeration, texture, and microbial composition. In addition, microplastics interact with multiple pollutants, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals, making them more bioavailable to crop plants. The study also provides a detailed insight into the current techniques available for the isolation and identification of soil microplastics, providing solutions to some of the critical challenges faced and highlighting the research gaps. In our study, we have taken a holistic, comprehensive approach by analysing and comparing various interconnected aspects to provide a deeper understanding of all research perspectives on microplastics in agroecosystems.

Insight into the effect of microplastics on photocatalytic degradation tetracycline by a dissolvable semiconductor-organic framework

The presence of microplastics (MPs) in large quantities in the aqueous environment significantly affects the degradation process of water pollution. Still, the interaction between MPs and pollutants during photocatalytic degradation has not been studied. Here, a soluble BiOCl-OH semiconductor-organic framework (BOCH-SOF) was prepared from xylitol, and the polystyrene (PS) MPs' effect on the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) was investigated. It was found that the appropriate number of PS can promote TC degradation and also change degradation products and pathways. At the same time, the presence of TC can effectively enhance PS aging and reduce the molecular weight of PS. This indicates that BOCH-SOF produces a synergistic effect in treating the combined pollution of TC and PS. Through free radical analysis and density functional theory calculations, it was proposed that PS and TC can complement each other. A certain concentration and size of PS can promote the conversion of Bi(III) to Bi and enhance charge separation and radical generation; the TC can change the interfacial charge distribution and free radical depletion, extend the light absorption in the system, and the PS and TC work together to ultimately achieve the synergistic degradation of the TC and the aging PS. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the mechanism of the effect of MPs on the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, which is significant in controlling the combined pollution of MPs and associated pollutants in the water environment.

Impact of polystyrene microplastics on the growth and photosynthetic efficiency of diatom Chaetoceros neogracile

The increasing prevalence of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments has raised concerns about its impact on marine life. Among the different types of microplastics, polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) are one of the most commonly detected in aquatic systems. Chaetoceros neogracile (diatom) is an essential part of the marine food web and plays a critical role in nutrient cycling. This study aimed to monitor the ecotoxicological impact of PSMPs on diatoms and observe enzymatic interactions through molecular docking simulations. Results showed that diatom growth decreased with increasing concentrations and exposure time to PSMPs, and the lowest photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) value was observed after 72 and 96 h of exposure to 200 mg L-1 of PSMPs. High concentrations of PSMPs led to a decrease in chlorophyll a content (up to 64.4%) and protein content (up to 35.5%). Molecular docking simulations revealed potential interactions between PSMPs and the extrinsic protein in photosystem II protein of diatoms, suggesting a strong affinity between the two. These findings indicate a detrimental effect of PSMPs on the growth and photosynthetic efficiency of diatoms and highlight the need for further research on the impact of microplastics on marine microbial processes.

Prepared microplastics interaction with Artemia salina under low pH conditions representing ocean acidification; a simulated environmental exposure

Ocean acidification and microplastic pollution are two of the major ecological concerns. The distribution of large quantities of plastic debris and microplastics all across the oceans emphasises the need to determine the influence of microplastics in ocean acidification and to evaluate its concomitant toxicological effects on aquatic life forms. Studies on the combined impact of both the stressors are very limited, but much needed in the current scenario. Where most of the present-day research use purchased microplastics of defined size and morphology (microspheres, fibres, rods, etc.), the present study employs prepared "true to life microplastics" that resemble the environmental microplastic pollutants in morphology and size heterogeneity. The present study focusses on evaluating the fate and impact of oceanic microplastics on the physiology and development of Artemia salina (Brine shrimp), one among the most ecologically significant zooplankton species. Natural sea water was acidified by controlled perturbation of carbon dioxide using a valve system. The hatching rate of A. salina cysts receded significantly (p < 0.05) upon singular exposures to microplastics and low pH (7.80), whereas combined effect was insignificant. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) elevated as a result of individual exposures to microplastics and low pH. However, only in 0.5 mg mL-1 PE treatments at pH 7.80, an additive impact was reported for ROS activity (p < 0.05). The SOD activities increased significantly but it can be attributed as the individual responses towards exposure to both the stressors. A significant additive impact was not observed for SOD activity (p > 0.05). But during the development, significant morphological anomalies were observed. Changes in the appendages of nauplii and juveniles as a result of combined exposure to microplastics and low pH treatments are significant findings. Our observations suggest that coupled exposure to microplastics and low pH could induce significant oxidative stress in the marine zooplanktons and also adversely affect their normal development. Findings from the current study emphasise the need for further research to understand the coupled toxicological impacts of ocean acidification and predominant pollutants such as microplastics to other marine animals as well.

Interactions between microplastics and contaminants: A review focusing on the effect of aging process

Microplastics (MPs) in the environment are a major global concern due to their persistent nature and wide distribution. The aging of MPs is influenced by several processes including photodegradation, thermal degradation, biodegradation and mechanical fragmentation, which affect their interaction with contaminants. This comprehensive review aims to summarize the aging process of MPs and the factors that impact their aging, and to discuss the effects of aging on the interaction of MPs with contaminants. A range of characterization methods that can effectively elucidate the mechanistic processes of these interactions are outlined. The rate and extent of MPs aging are influenced by their physicochemical properties and other environmental factors, which ultimately affect the adsorption and aggregation of aged MPs with environmental contaminants. Pollutants such as heavy metals, organic matter and microorganisms have a tendency to accumulate on MPs through adsorption and the interactions between them impact their environmental behavior. Aging enhances the specific surface area and oxygen-containing functional groups of MPs, thereby affecting the mechanism of interaction between MPs and contaminants. To obtain a more comprehensive understanding of how aging affects the interactions, this review also provides an overview of the mechanisms by which MPs interact with contaminants. In the future, there should be further in-depth studies of the potential hazards of aged MPs in different environments e.g., soil, sediment, aquatic environment, and effects of their interaction with environmental pollutants on human health and ecology.

Effect of polylactic acid microplastics and lead on the growth and physiological characteristics of buckwheat

Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are common, often co-existing pollutants, that threaten crop growth and productivity worldwide. We analysed the adsorption of lead ions (Pb2+) to polylactic acid MPs (PLA-MPs) and their single factor and combined effects on tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum L. Gaertn.) in hydroponics by measuring changes in the growth characteristics, antioxidant enzyme activities and Pb2+ uptake of buckwheat in response to PLA-MPs and Pb2+. PLA-MPs adsorbed Pb2+, and the better fitting second-order adsorption model implied that Pb2+ was adsorbed by chemisorption. However, the similar Pb2+ contents in the plants treated with Pb2+ only and those treated with the combined PLA-MPs-Pb2+ suggested that the adsorption played no role in the uptake of Pb2+. Low concentrations of PLA-MPs promoted shoot length. At high concentrations of both PLA-MPs and Pb2+, buckwheat growth was inhibited, and leaf peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents were higher than in the control. No significant differences were observed in seedling growth between exposure to Pb2+ only and combined exposure to PLA-MPs with Pb2+, implying that PLA-MPs did not increase the toxicity of Pb2+ at macroscopic level. POD activity was higher and chlorophyll content was lower with PLA-MPs in the low Pb2+ dose treatments, suggesting that PLA-MPs may increase the toxicity of naturally occurring Pb2+. However, the conclusions must be verified in controlled experiments in natural soil conditions over the whole cultivation period of buckwheat.
