Synthesis and characterization of Eu(III) complexes of modified d-glucosamine and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

Green and efficient synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals from Hamelia patens leftover via hydrolysis of microwave assisted-ionic liquid (MWAIL) pretreated microcrystalline cellulose

The efficient bioconversion of the lignocellulosic agro-waste has immense importance in biorefinery processing in extracting the cellulose and saccharide fractions. To achieve this, a series of chemical pretreatments is employed, thus concerning environmental threats limit its use. Therefore, an ionic liquid is employed for pretreatment before sustainable extractions owing to its safe manipulation, recycling, and reusability. Specifically, microwave-assisted ionic liquid (MWAIL) pretreatment has significant importance in extracting high cellulose yield at less thermal power consumption. In this study, the leftover stalks of Hamelia patens were subjected to MWAIL pretreatment at 60, 70, 80, and 90 °C to extract microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). Subsequently, the MCC was fabricated into cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) through hydrolytic treatment using acidic and ionic liquids and denoted as CNC-AH and CNC-ILH. Thus obtained CNC was characterized by FTIR, FESEM, XRD, and TGA to investigate the influence of solvent on its morphology, crystallinity, and thermal stability of CNC. The results support that the CNC-ILH has comparatively more thermal and dispersal stability with a reduced crystallinity index than CNC-AH. The surprising results of CNC-ILH signify its utilization in diverse applications in the food and industrial sectors.

In vitro α-glucosidase, docking and density functional theory studies on novel azide metal complexes

Aim: The goal of this study is to synthesize new metal complexes containing N-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine and azide ligands as α-glucosidase inhibitors for Type 2 diabetes. Materials & methods: The target complexes (12-16) were synthesized by reacting N-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine (L1) with sodium azide in the presence of corresponding metal salts. The investigation of target protein interactions, vibrational, electronic and nonlinear optical properties for these complexes was performed by molecular docking and density functional theory studies. Results: Among these complexes, complex 13 (IC50 = 0.2802 ± 0.62 μM) containing Hg ion showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory property. On the other hand, significant results were detected for complexes containing Cu and Ag ions. Conclusion: Complex 13 may be an alternate anti-diabetic inhibitor according to in vitro/docking results.

Design, synthesis, molecular docking study, and α-glucosidase inhibitory evaluation of novel hydrazide-hydrazone derivatives of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid

A series of novel Schiff base derivatives (1-28) of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid were synthesized in a multi-step reaction. All the synthesized Schiff bases were obtained in high yields and their structures were determined by 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and HR-ESI-MS spectroscopy. Except for compounds 22, 26, 27, and 28, all derivatives show excellent to moderate α-glucosidase inhibition. Compounds 5 (IC50 = 12.84 ± 0.52 µM), 4 (IC50 = 13.64 ± 0.58 µM), 12 (IC50 = 15.73 ± 0.71 µM), 13 (IC50 = 16.62 ± 0.47 µM), 15 (IC50 = 17.40 ± 0.74 µM), 3 (IC50 = 18.45 ± 1.21 µM), 7 (IC50 = 19.68 ± 0.82 µM), and 2 (IC50 = 20.35 ± 1.27 µM) shows outstanding inhibition as compared to standard acarbose (IC50 = 873.34 ± 1.67 µM). Furthermore, a docking study was performed to find out the interaction between the enzyme and the most active compounds. With this research work, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid Schiff base derivatives have been introduced as a potential class of α-glucosidase inhibitors that have remained elusive till now.

Bacteriogenic synthesis of morphologically diverse silver nanoparticles and their assessment for methyl orange dye removal and antimicrobial activity

Nanotechnology and nanoparticles have gained massive attention in the scientific community in recent years due to their valuable properties. Among various AgNPs synthesis methods, microbial approaches offer distinct advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility, and eco-friendliness. In the present research work, investigators have synthesized three different types of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), namely AgNPs-K, AgNPs-M, and AgNPs-E, by using Klebsiella pneumoniae (MBC34), Micrococcus luteus (MBC23), and Enterobacter aerogenes (MBX6), respectively. The morphological, chemical, and elemental features of the synthesized AgNPs were analyzed by using UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). UV-Vis absorbance peaks were obtained at 475, 428, and 503 nm for AgNPs-K, AgNPs-M, and AgNPs-E, respectively. The XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of the synthesized AgNPs, having peaks at 26.2°, 32.1°, and 47.2°. At the same time, the FTIR showed bands at 599, 963, 1,693, 2,299, 2,891, and 3,780 cm-1 for all the types of AgNPs indicating the presence of bacterial biomolecules with the developed AgNPs. The size and morphology of the AgNPs varied from 10 nm to several microns and exhibited spherical to porous sheets-like structures. The percentage of Ag varied from 37.8% (wt.%) to 61.6%, i.e., highest in AgNPs-K and lowest in AgNPs-M. Furthermore, the synthesized AgNPs exhibited potential for environmental remediation, with AgNPs-M exhibiting the highest removal efficiency (19.24% at 120 min) for methyl orange dye in simulated wastewater. Further, all three types of AgNPs were evaluated for the removal of methyl orange dye from the simulated wastewater, where the highest dye removal percentage was 19.24% at 120 min by AgNPs-M. Antibacterial potential of the synthesized AgNPs assessment against both Gram-positive (GPB) Bacillus subtilis (MBC23), B. cereus (MBC24), and Gram-negative bacteria Enterococcus faecalis (MBP13) revealed promising results, with AgNPs-M, exhibiting the largest zone of inhibition (12 mm) against GPB B. megaterium. Such investigation exhibits the potential of the bacteria for the synthesis of AgNPs with diverse morphology and potential applications in environmental remediation and antibacterial therapy-based synthesis of AgNPs.

Microfluidic-based nanoemulsion of Ocimum basilicum extract: Constituents, stability, characterization, and potential biomedical applications for improved antimicrobial and anticancer properties

This paper reports on the findings from a study that aimed to identify and characterize the constituents of Ocimum basilicum extract using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, as well as assess the physicochemical properties and stability of nanoemulsions formulated with O. basilicum extract. The GC-MS analysis revealed that the O. basilicum extract contained 22 components, with Caryophyllene and Naringenin identified as the primary active constituents. The nanoemulsion formulation demonstrated excellent potential for use in the biomedical field, with a small and uniform particle size distribution, a negative zeta potential, and high encapsulation efficiency for the O. basilicum extract. The nanoemulsions exhibited spherical morphology and remained physically stable for up to 6 months. In vitro release studies indicated sustained release of the extract from the nanoemulsion formulation compared to the free extract solution. Furthermore, the developed nanoformulation exhibited enhanced anticancer properties against K562 cells while demonstrating low toxicity in normal cells (HEK293). The O. basilicum extract demonstrated antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, and Staphylococcus epidermidis, with a potential synergistic effect observed when combined with the nanoemulsion. These findings contribute to the understanding of the constituents and potential applications of O. basilicum extract and its nanoemulsion formulation in various fields, including healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Further optimization and research are necessary to maximize the efficacy and antimicrobial activity of the extract and its nanoformulation. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: This study characterized the constituents of O. basilicum extract and assessed the physicochemical properties and stability of its nanoemulsion formulation. The O. basilicum extract contained 22 components, with Caryophyllene and Naringenin identified as the primary active constituents. Hydrolytic degradation and biodegradation of polylactic acid electrospun fibers

Increased use of bioplastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA), helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, decreases energy consumption and lowers pollution, but its degradation efficiency has much room for improvement. The degradation rate of electrospun PLA fibers of varying diameters ranging from 0.15 to 1.33 μm is measured during hydrolytic degradation under different pH from 5.5 to 10, and during aerobic biodegradation in seawater supplemented with activated sewage sludge. In hydrolytic conditions, varying PLA fiber diameter had significant influence over percentage weight loss (W%L), where faster degradation was achieved for PLA fibers with smaller diameter. W%L was greatest for PLA-5 > PLA-12 > PLA-16 > PLA-20, with average W%L at 30.7%, 27.8%, 17.2% and 14.3% respectively. While different pH environment does not have a significant influence on PLA degradation, with W%L only slightly higher for basic environments. Similarly biodegradation displayed faster degradation for small diameter fibers with PLA-5 attaining the highest degree of biodegradation at 22.8% after 90 days. Hydrolytic degradation resulted in no significant structural change, while biodegradation resulted in significant hydroxyl end capping products on the PLA surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging of degraded PLA fibers showed a deteriorated morphology of PLA-5 and PLA-12 fibers with increased adhesion structures and irregularly shaped fibers, while a largely unmodified morphology for PLA-16 and PLA-20.

Synthesis of new bis(dimethylamino)benzophenone hydrazone for diabetic management: In-vitro and in-silico approach

Inhibiting α-glucosidase is a reliable method for reducing blood sugar levels in diabetic individuals. Bis(dimethylamino)benzophenone derivatives 1-27 were synthesized from bis(dimethylamino)benzophenone via two-step reaction. Different spectroscopic techniques, including EI-MS and 1H NMR, were employed to characterize all synthetic derivatives. The elemental composition of synthetic compounds was confirmed by elemental analysis and results were found in agreement with the calculated values. The synthetic compounds 1-27 were evaluated for α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, except five compounds all derivatives showed good to moderate inhibitory potential in the range of IC50 = 0.28 ± 2.65 - 0.94 ± 2.20 μM. Among them, the most active compounds were 5, 8, 9, and 12 with IC50 values of 0.29 ± 4.63, 0.29 ± 0.93, 0.28 ± 3.65, and 0.28 ± 2.65, respectively. Furthermore, all these compounds were found to be non-toxic on human fibroblast cell lines (BJ cell lines). Kinetics study of compounds 8 and 9 revealed competitive type of inhibition with Ki values 2.79 ± 0.011 and 3.64 ± 0.012 μM, respectively. The binding interactions of synthetic compounds were also confirmed through molecular docking studies that indicated that compounds fit well in the active site of enzyme. Furthermore, a total of 30ns MD simulation was carried out for the most potent complexes of the series. The molecular dynamics study revealed that compound-8 and compound-12 were stable during the MD simulation.

Synthesis, characterization, Hirshfeld surface analysis, antioxidant and selective β-glucuronidase inhibitory studies of transition metal complexes of hydrazide based Schiff base ligand

The synthesis of N'-[(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methylidene] 2-aminobenzohydrazide (H-AHMB) was performed by condensing O-vanillin with 2-aminobenzohydrazide and was characterized by FTIR, high resolution ESI(+) mass spectral analysis, 1H and 13C-NMR. The compound H-AHMB was crystallized in orthorhombic Pbca space group and studied for single crystal diffraction analysis. Hirshfeld surface analysis was also carried out for identifying short interatomic interactions. The major interactions H…H, O…H and C…H cover the Hirshfeld surface of H-AHMB. The metal complexes [M(AHMB)n] where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) were prepared from metal chlorides and H-AHMB ligand. The bonding was unambigously assigned using FTIR and UV/vis analysis. The synthesized ligand H-AHMB and its metal complexes were studied for β-glucuronidase enzyme inhibition. Surprisingly the metal complexes were found more active than the parent ligand and even the standard drug. Zn-AHMB shown IC50 = 17.3 ± 0.68 µM compared to IC50 = 45.75 ± 2.16 µM shown by D-saccharic acid-1,4-lactone used as standard. The better activity by Zn-AHMB implying zinc based metallodrug for the treatment of diseases associated with β-glucuronidase enzyme. The DPPH radical scavenging activities were also studied for all the synthesized compounds. The Co-AHMB complex with IC50 = 98.2 ± 1.78 µM was the only candidate to scavenge the DPPH free radicals.

Bacterial cellulose microfiber reinforced hollow chitosan beads decorated with cross-linked melamine plates for the removal of the Congo red

In this epoch, the disposal of multipollutant wastewater inevitably compromises life on Earth. In this study, the inclusion of Bacterial cellulose microfilaments reinforced chitosan adorned with melamine 2D plates creates a unique 3D bead structure for anionic dye removal. The establishment of an imine network between melamine and chitosan, along with the quantity of inter- and intra‑hydrogen bonds, boosts the specific surface area to 106.68 m2.g-1. Removal efficiency and in-depth comprehension of synthesized adsorbent characteristics were assessed using batch adsorption experiments and characterization methods. Additionally, pH, adsorbent quantity, time, beginning concentration of solution, and temperature were analyzed and optimized as adsorption essential factors. Owing to the profusion of hydroxyl, amine, imine functional groups and aromatic rings, the synthesized adsorbent intimated an astonishing maximum adsorption capacity of 3168 mg.g-1 in Congo red dye removal at pH 5.5. Based on the kinetic evaluation, pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0.999), pseudo-first-order (R2 = 0.964), and Avrami (R2 = 0.986) models were well-fitted with the kinetic results among the seven investigated models. The isothermal study reveals that the adsorption mechanism predominantly follows the Redlich-Peterson (R2 = 0.996), Koble-Carrigan, and Hill isotherm models (R2 = 0.994). The developed semi-natural sorbent suggests high adsorption capacity, which results from its exceptional structure, presenting promising implications for wastewater treatment.

Coconut husk-derived nanocellulose as reinforcing additives in thermal-responsive hydrogels

Nanocellulose has been widely used as a reinforcing agent for hydrogel systems, but its functions on thermal responsive hydrogels are rarely investigated. In this study, we extracted cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from coconut biomass (coir fibers and piths, respectively) and aimed to study their effects on the material properties on a new class of thermogel (poly(PCL/PEG/PPG urethane). The CNFs extracted from fiber (FF) and piths (FP) showed different morphology and fiber lengths. FF are uniformed individual fibrous networks with a fiber length of 664 ± 416 nm, while FP display a hybrid structure consisting of individual fiber and large bundles with a relative shorter fiber length of 443 ± 184 nm. Integrating both CNFs into thermogels remained the thermal-responsive characteristics with an enhanced rheological property. The results showed that gels with FF resulted in a higher storage modulus and lower Tan δ value compared to those with FP, indicating that the CNFs with a longer length could form a more intertwined network interacting with the thermogel matrix. Furthermore, we demonstrated the improved capabilities of the nanocomposite thermogels for sustained drug delivery in vitro. This study not only value-adds lignocellulose valorization but also elevates the versatility of thermogels.

The variations in gene expression of GAPDH in Ocimum basilicum cultivars under drought-induced stress conditions

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) holds a pivotal role within the glycolytic pathway of higher plants. It has garnered attention as a significant target protein in instances of oxidative stress, where it can engage in thiolation reactions within its active site. Numerous genes encoding cytosolic iterations of GAPDH have been identified and analyzed in specific plant species. This investigation was conducted to gain insights into GAPDH's function amidst drought-induced stress. Within this framework, the basil plant (Ocimum basilicum) was chosen for focused exploration, encompassing the cloning of the comprehensive cDNA of basil GAPDH (ObGAPDH) and scrutinizing its patterns of expression. The complete sequence of Ob-GAPDH spanned 1315 base pairs. The resultant protein derived from this sequence comprised 399 amino acids, projecting a molecular weight of approximately 42.54 kDa and an isoelectric point (pI) of 6.01. An examination of the evolutionary connections among various GAPDH proteins unveiled ObGAPDH's shared lineage with GAPDH proteins sourced from other plants, such as Salvia splendens and Sesamum indicum. Furthermore, computational methodologies were harnessed to predict the potential oxidative role of ObGAPDH in response to external signals. Molecular docking simulations illuminated the interaction between ObGAPDH and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a ligand. Scrutinizing the expression patterns of the ObGAPDH gene under conditions of water scarcity stress brought to light diverse levels of transcriptional activity. Collectively, these findings underscore the notion that the regulation of ObGAPDH expression is contingent upon both the specific plant cultivar and the presence of stress stemming from drought conditions.

Exploring the synthesis, structure, spectroscopy and biological activities of novel 4-benzylidene-1-(2-(2,4-dichloro phenyl)acetyl) thiosemicarbazide derivatives: An integrated experimental and theoretical investigation

BACKGROUND

Novel α-amylase inhibitors play a crucial role in managing diabetes and obesity, contributing to improved public health by addressing these challenging and prevalent conditions. Moreover, the synthesis of anti-oxidant agents is essential due to their potential in combating oxidative stress-related diseases and promoting overall health.

OBJECTIVE

Synthesis of thoisemicarbazone derivatives of 2,4-dichlorophenyl acetic acid and to screened them for their biological activities.

METHOD

Thiosemicarbazone derivatives (4-13) were synthesized by refluxing 2,4-dichlorophenyl acetic acid with sulfuric acid in ethanol to get the ester (2), which was further refluxed with thiosemicarbazide to get compound (3). Finally, different aromatic aldehydes were refluxed with compound (3) in ethanol in catalytic amount of acetic acid to obtained the final products (4-13). Using modern spectroscopic techniques including HR-ESI-MS, 13C-, and 1H NMR, the structures of the created derivatives were confirmed.

RESULTS

The synthesized derivatives showed excellent to good inhibitory activity in the range of IC50 values of 4.95 ± 0.44 to 69.71 ± 0.05 µM against α-amylase enzyme when compared to standard drug acarbose (IC50 = 21.55 ± 1.31 µM). In case of iron chelating activity, these products showed potent activity better than standard EDTA (IC50 = 66.43 ± 1.07 µM) in the range of IC50 values of 22.43 ± 2.09 to 61.21 ± 2.83 µM. However, the obtained products also show excellent to good activity in the range of IC50 values of 28.30 ± 1.17 to 64.66 ± 2.43 µM against hydroxyl radical scavenging activity when compared with standard vitamin C (IC50 = 60.51 ± 1.02 µM). DFT used to calculate different reactivity factors including ionization potential, electronegativity, electron affinity, chemical softness, and chemical hardness were calculated using frontier molecular orbital (FMO) computations. The molecular docking studies for the synthesized derivatives with α-amylase were carried out using the AutoDock Vina to understand the binding affinities with active sites of the protein.

Fabrication and In Vitro Biological Assay of Thermo-Mechanically Tuned Chitosan Reinforced Polyurethane Composites

The progressive trend of utilizing bioactive materials constitutes diverse materials exhibiting biocompatibility. The innovative aspect of this research is the tuning of the thermo-mechanical behavior of polyurethane (PU) composites with improved biocompatibility for vibrant applications. Polycaprolactone (CAPA) Mn = 2000 g-mol-1 was used as a macrodiol, along with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), to develop prepolymer chains, which were terminated with 1,4 butane diol (BD). The matrix was reinforced with various concentrations of chitosan (1-5 wt %). Two series of PU composites (PUT/PUH) based on aromatic and aliphatic diisocyanate were prepared by varying the hard segment (HS) ratio from 5 to 30 (wt %). The Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the absence of an NCO peak at 1730 cm-1 in order to confirm polymer chain termination. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed optimum weight loss up to 500 °C. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed the complex modulus (E*) ≥ 200 MPa. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) proved the ordered structure and uniform distribution of chain extender in PU. The hemolytic activities were recorded up to 15.8 ± 1.5% for the PUH series. The optimum values for the inhibition of biofilm formation were recorded as 46.3 ± 1.8% against E. coli and S. aureus (%), which was supported by phase contrast microscopy.

Surface modification of a screen-printed electrode with a flower-like nanostructure to fabricate a guanine DNA-based electrochemical biosensor to determine the anticancer drug pemigatinib

The present study developed a DNA biosensor to determine pemigatinib for the first time. Three-dimensional carnation flower-like Eu3+:β-MnO2 nanostructures (3D CF-L Eu3+:β-MnO2 NSs) and a screen-printed electrode (SPE) modified with polyaniline (PA) were employed. The double-stranded DNA was also immobilized completely on the PA/3D CF-L Eu3+:β-MnO2 NSs/SPE. Then, electrochemical techniques were used for characterizing the modified electrode. After that, the interaction between pemigatinib and DNA was shown by a reduction in the oxidation current of guanine using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). According to the analysis, the dynamic range of pemigatinib was between 0.001 and 180.0 μM, indicating the new electrode has a low limit of detection (LOD = 0.23 nM) for pemigatinib. Afterwards, pemigatinib in real samples was measured using the PA/3D CF-L Eu3+:β-MnO2 NSs/SPE loaded with ds-DNA. The proposed DNA biosensor showed good selectivity toward pemigatinib in the presence of other interference analytes, such as other ions, structurally related pharmaceuticals, and plasma proteins. In addition, the interaction site of pemigatinib with DNA was predicted by molecular docking, which showed the interaction of pemigatinib with the guanine bases of DNA through a groove binding mode. Finally, we employed the t-test to verify the capability of the ds-DNA/PA/3D CF-L Eu3+:β-MnO2 NSs/SPE for analyzing pemigatinib in real samples.

A Star-Shaped Copolymer with Tetra-Hydroxy-Phenylporphyrin Core and Four PNIPAM-b-PMAGA Arms for Targeted Photodynamic Therapy

The novel thermosensitive star-shaped tetra-hydroxy-phenylporphyrin-cored (THPP) double hydrophilic poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(methylacrylamide glucose) block copolymers (THPP-(PNIPAM-b-PMAGA)₄) were synthesized via the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Notably, the low critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) of THPP-(PNIPAM-b-PMAGA)₄ were above normal body temperature (37 °C) which depended on the hydrophilic PMAGA contents of copolymers. When the temperature was higher than the LCST of the copolymer, the copolymer could be neutralized into micelles in aqueous and could be coated with antitumor drugs and released around tumor cells. The MTT study indicated that THPP-(PNIPAM-b-PMAGA)₄ had a low toxicity to L929 and HeLa cells in the absence of light. However, THPP-(PNIPAM-b-PMAGA)₄ showed a high toxicity with HeLa cells under light irradiation which could be used as a potential photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). In addition, THPP-(PNIPAM-b-PMAGA)₄ showed specific a recognition function with Concanavalin A (Con A) to achieve active targeted drug delivery. This work provides a new approach for the development of tumor targeting and chemotherapy/PDT.

Eu3+- and Tb3+-Based Coordination Complexes of Poly(N-Isopropyl,N-methylacrylamide-stat-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) Copolymer: Synthesis, Characterization and Property

This contribution reports the syntheses, structural analyses and properties of europium (Eu³⁺)- and terbium (Tb³⁺)-based coordination complexes of poly(N-isopropyl,N-methylacrylamide-stat-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (poly(iPMAm-stat-DMAm)) copolymer, named as poly-Eu(III) and poly-Tb(III), respectively. In greater detail, poly(iPMAm₈₅-stat-DMAm₁₅) is first prepared by random copolymerization of N-isopropyl,N-methylacrylamide (iPMAm) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAm) via group transfer polymerization (GTP). Next, poly(iPMAm₈₅-stat-DMAm₁₅) is used as the polymer matrix for chelating with Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ cations at its side amide groups, to produce poly-Eu(III) and poly-Tb(III). Their structural characterizations by FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS confirm the formation of polymeric complexes. The study on their fluorescence emission characteristics and luminescence lifetime demonstrates that Poly-Eu(III) shows four strong emission peaks at 578, 593, 622, and 651 nm, which are responsible for the electron transitions from the excited ⁵D₀ state to the multiplet ⁷F_J (J = 0, 1, 2, 3) states, respectively, and poly-Tb(III) also displays four emission peaks at 489, 545, 588, and 654 nm, mainly due to the electron transitions of ⁵D₄ → ⁷F_i (i = 6, 5, 4, 3). The luminescence lifetimes of poly-Eu(III) (τ_poly-Eu(III)) and poly-Tb(III) (τ_poly-Tb(III)) are determined to be 4.57 and 7.50 ms, respectively. In addition, in aqueous solutions, poly-Eu(III) and poly-Tb(III) are found to exhibit thermoresponsivity, with their cloud temperatures (T_cs) locating around 36.4 and 36.8 °C, respectively. Finally, the cytotoxicity study on the human colon carcinoma cells LoVo and DLD1 suggests that the luminescent Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ in the chelated state with poly(iPMAm-stat-DMAm) show much better biocompatibility and lower toxicity than their inorganic salts.

Hydrogel Adsorbents for the Removal of Hazardous Pollutants—Requirements and Available Functions as Adsorbent

Over the last few decades, various adsorption functions of polymer hydrogels for the removal of hazardous pollutants have been developed. The performance of hydrogel adsorbents depends on the constituents of the gels and the functions produced by the polymer networks of the gels. Research on hydrogels utilizing the characteristic functions of polymer networks has increased over the last decade. The functions of polymer networks are key to the development of advanced adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants. No review has discussed hydrogel adsorbents from the perspective of the roles and functions of polymer networks in hydrogels. This paper briefly reviews the basic requirements of adsorbents and the general characteristics of hydrogels as adsorbents. Thereafter, hydrogels are reviewed on the basis of the roles and functions of the polymer networks in them for the removal of hazardous pollutants by introducing studies published over the last decade. The application of hydrogels as adsorbents for the removal of hazardous pollutants is discussed as well.

Ultrasonic desulfurization of amphiphilic magnetic-Janus nanosheets in oil-water mixture system

Fe₃O₄ was obtained by reacting FeCl₂ and FeCl₃ with polyethylene glycol, and labeled onto a amphiphilic Janus nanosheet. It was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, SEM, AFM and EDS that the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles changed from hydrophilic to amphiphilic. The oxidative desulfurization performance of amphiphilic iron oxide was studied. Results showed that the Janus nanosheets labeled with Fe₃O₄ could significantly improve the removal rate of thiophene sulfide in simulated oil synergistically with ultrasonic waves, and the desulfurization rate could reach 100%. Further, the effect of ultrasound on the sensing ability of the oil-water interface was studied and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was calculated. In addition to the desulfurization mechanism of Fe₃O₄, it was found that although the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient of the amphiphilic nanosheets was high, the number of hydroxyl radicals determined the desulfurization efficiency. The amphiphilic Fe ions were more favorable for the formation of hydroxyl radicals than the single hydrophilic ones.

Synthesis and characterization of phenylboronic acid-containing polymer for glucose-triggered drug delivery

Thermo-, pH- and glucose-responsive polymeric nanoparticles are of great interest in developing a self-regulated drug delivery system. The novel core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized by self-assembly of a phenylboronic acid-based block copolymer poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid) (PNIPAM₁₃₆-b-PAPBA₁₆) and a fluorescent complex glucosamine-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/Eu(III) (GA-PNIPAM)/Eu(III) based on the cross-linking between PBA- and GA-containing blocks in this work. The nanoparticles can be tuned via thermo-induced collapse or glucose-induced swelling at appropriate pH and temperatures; they had an average kinetic radius was about 80nm, and which showed excellent fluorescence. MTT assays revealed the nanocarriers had no significant cytotoxic response of the micelle when it was observed in the cell line over the concentration range from 0.1 to 1000 μg/ml at any exposure times.

Construction and Swelling Properties of Thermosensitive N-isopropyl Acrylamide Microspheres With Controllable Size

In recent years, thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microspheres have received extensive attention due to their many advantages, and their size and swelling ratio are two crucial factors. In this paper, homogeneous and hollow thermosensitive microspheres were prepared by free radical polymerization in an aqueous solution. The effects of the process parameters on the size of the microspheres were studied. The results indicated that the change in size during reaction at different temperatures was not obvious. The size of the microspheres ranged from 802 ± 35.4 nm to 423 ± 33.7 nm with the changes in the dosage of the initiator. Meanwhile, it was observed that the size of microspheres was slightly reduced due to the increase of reaction time. When the dosage of methyl methacrylate (MAA) is increased, the size of the hollow microspheres increased by more than 110%. The average size of the microspheres was smaller when the content of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was 3 wt%. The microspheres with varying reaction parameters showed a continuous decreasing swelling ratio when the temperatures were changed from 28 °C to 35 °C. In comparison with homogeneous microspheres, the average swelling ratio of hollow microspheres was larger.
