Abstract
Corneal diseases are a major cause of vision loss worldwide. Traditional methods like corneal transplants from donors are effective but face challenges like limited donor availability and the risk of graft rejection. Therefore, new treatment methods are essential. This review examines the growing field of bioprinting and biofabrication in corneal tissue engineering. We begin by discussing various bioprinting methods such as stereolithography, inkjet, and extrusion printing, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses for eye-related uses. We also explore how biological tissues are made suitable for bioprinting through a process called decellularization, which can be achieved using chemical, physical, or biological methods. The review then looks at natural materials, known as bioinks, used in bioprinting. We focus on materials like gelatin, collagen, fibrin, chitin, chitosan, silk fibroin, and alginate, examining their mechanical and biological properties. The importance of hydrogel scaffolds, particularly those based on collagen and other materials, is also discussed in the context of repairing corneal tissue. Another key area we cover is the use of stem cells in corneal regeneration. We pay special attention to limbal epithelial stem cells and mesenchymal stromal cells, highlighting their roles in this process. The review concludes with an overview of the latest advancements in corneal tissue bioprinting, from early techniques to advanced methods of delivering stem cells using bioengineered materials. In summary, this review presents the current state and future potential of bioprinting and biofabrication in creating functional corneal tissues, highlighting new developments and ongoing challenges with a view towards restoring vision.

Abstract
The repair and regeneration of the injured tissues or organs is a major challenge for biomedicine, and the emerging 3D bioprinting technology as a class of promising techniques in biomedical research for the development of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Chitosan-based bioinks, as the natural biomaterials, are considered as ideal materials for 3D bioprinting to design and fabricate the various scaffold due to their unique dynamic reversibility and fantastic biological properties. Our review aims to provide an overview of chitosan-based bioinks for in vitro tissue repair and regeneration, starting from modification of chitosan that affect these bioprinting processes. In addition, we summarize the advances in chitosan-based bioinks used in the various 3D printing strategies. Moreover, the biomedical applications of chitosan-based bioinks are discussed, primarily centered on regenerative medicine and tissue modeling engineering. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities in this field are discussed. The combination of chitosan-based bioinks and 3D bioprinting will hold promise for developing novel biomedical scaffolds for tissue or organ repair and regeneration.

Abstract
3D bioprinting is a new 3D manufacturing technology, that can be used to accurately distribute and load microorganisms to form microbial active materials with multiple complex functions. Based on the 3D printing of human cells in tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting technology has been developed. Although 3D bioprinting technology is still immature, it shows great potential in the environmental field. Due to the precise programming control and multi-printing pathway, 3D bioprinting technology provides a high-throughput method based on micron-level patterning for a wide range of environmental microbiological engineering applications, which makes it an on-demand, multi-functional manufacturing technology. To date, 3D bioprinting technology has been employed in microbial fuel cells, biofilm material preparation, microbial catalysts and 4D bioprinting with time dimension functions. Nevertheless, current 3D bioprinting technology faces technical challenges in improving the mechanical properties of materials, developing specific bioinks to adapt to different strains, and exploring 4D bioprinting for intelligent applications. Hence, this review systematically analyzes the basic technical principles of 3D bioprinting, bioinks materials and their applications in the environmental field, and proposes the challenges and future prospects of 3D bioprinting in the environmental field. Combined with the current development of microbial enhancement technology in the environmental field, 3D bioprinting will be developed into an enabling platform for multifunctional microorganisms and facilitate greater control of in situ directional reactions.

Abstract
Vat photopolymerization (VP), including stereolithography (SLA), digital light processing (DLP), and volumetric printing, employs UV or visible light to solidify cell-laden photoactive bioresin contained within a vat in a point-by-point, layer-by-layer, or volumetric manner. VP-based bioprinting has garnered substantial attention in both academia and industry due to its unprecedented control over printing resolution and accuracy, as well as its rapid printing speed. It holds tremendous potential for the fabrication of tissue- and organ-like structures in the field of regenerative medicine. This review summarizes the recent progress of VP in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. First, it introduces the mechanism of photopolymerization, followed by an explanation of the printing technique and commonly used biomaterials. Furthermore, the application of VP-based bioprinting in tissue engineering was discussed. Finally, the challenges facing VP-based bioprinting are discussed, and the future trends in VP-based bioprinting are projected.

Abstract
Tissue engineering research has undergone to a revolutionary improvement, thanks to technological advancements, such as the introduction of bioprinting technologies. The ability to develop suitable customized biomaterial inks/bioinks, with excellent printability and ability to promote cell proliferation and function, has a deep impact on such improvements. In this context, printing inks based on chitosan and its derivatives have been instrumental. Thus, the current review aims at providing a comprehensive overview on chitosan-based materials as suitable inks for 3D/4D (bio)printing and their applicability in creating advanced drug delivery platforms and tissue engineered constructs. Furthermore, relevant strategies to improve the mechanical and biological performances of this biomaterial are also highlighted.

Abstract
Immobilization using external or internal splints is a standard and effective procedure to treat minor skeletal fractures. In the case of major skeletal defects caused by extreme trauma, infectious diseases or tumors, the surgical implantation of a bone graft from external sources is required for a complete cure. Practical disadvantages, such as the risk of immune rejection and infection at the implant site, are high in xenografts and allografts. Currently, an autograft from the iliac crest of a patient is considered the "gold standard" method for treating large-scale skeletal defects. However, this method is not an ideal solution due to its limited availability and significant reports of morbidity in the harvest site (30%) as well as the implanted site (5-35%). Tissue-engineered bone grafts aim to create a mechanically strong, biologically viable and degradable bone graft by combining a three-dimensional porous scaffold with osteoblast or progenitor cells. The materials used for such tissue-engineered bone grafts can be broadly divided into ceramic materials (calcium phosphates) and biocompatible/bioactive synthetic polymers. This review summarizes the types of materials used to make scaffolds for cryo-preservable tissue-engineered bone grafts as well as the distinct methods adopted to create the scaffolds, including traditional scaffold fabrication methods (solvent-casting, gas-foaming, electrospinning, thermally induced phase separation) and more recent fabrication methods (fused deposition molding, stereolithography, selective laser sintering, Inkjet 3D printing, laser-assisted bioprinting and 3D bioprinting). This is followed by a short summation of the current osteochondrogenic models along with the required scaffold mechanical properties for in vivo applications. We then present a few results of the effects of freezing and thawing on the structural and mechanical integrity of PLLA scaffolds prepared by the thermally induced phase separation method and conclude this review article by summarizing the current regulatory requirements for tissue-engineered products.

Abstract
Bone tissue engineering (BTE) has been proven to be an effective method for the treatment of bone defects caused by different musculoskeletal disorders. Photocrosslinkable hydrogels (PCHs) with good biocompatibility and biodegradability can significantly promote the migration, proliferation and differentiation of cells and have been widely used in BTE. Moreover, photolithography 3D bioprinting technology can notably help PCHs-based scaffolds possess a biomimetic structure of natural bone, meeting the structural requirements of bone regeneration. Nanomaterials, cells, drugs and cytokines added into bioinks can enable different functionalization strategies for scaffolds to achieve the desired properties required for BTE. In this review, we demonstrate a brief introduction of the advantages of PCHs and photolithography-based 3D bioprinting technology and summarize their applications in BTE. Finally, the challenges and potential future approaches for bone defects are outlined.

Abstract
Digital light processing (DLP) is an accurate and fast additive manufacturing technique to produce a variety of products, from patient-customized biomedical implants to consumer goods. However, DLP's use in tissue engineering has been hampered due to a lack of biodegradable resin development. Herein, a library of biodegradable poly(esters) capped with urethane acrylate (with variations in molecular weight) is investigated as the basis for DLP printable resins for tissue engineering. The synthesized oligomers show good printability and are capable of creating complex structures with mechanical moduli close to those of medium-soft tissues (1-3 MPa). While fabricated films from different molecular weight resins show few differences in surface topology, wettability, and protein adsorption, the adhesion and metabolic activity of NCTC clone 929 (L929) cells and human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) are significantly different. Resins from higher molecular weight oligomers provide greater cell adhesion and metabolic activity. Furthermore, these materials show compatibility in a subcutaneous in vivo pig model. These customizable, biodegradable, and biocompatible resins show the importance of molecular tuning and open up new possibilities for the creation of biocompatible constructs for tissue engineering.

Abstract
The fast-developing field of 3D bio-printing has been extensively used to improve the usability and performance of scaffolds filled with cells. Over the last few decades, a variety of tissues and organs including skin, blood vessels, and hearts, etc., have all been produced in large quantities via 3D bio-printing. These tissues and organs are not only able to serve as building blocks for the ultimate goal of repair and regeneration, but they can also be utilized as in vitro models for pharmacokinetics, drug screening, and other purposes. To further 3D-printing uses in tissue engineering, research on novel, suitable biomaterials with quick cross-linking capabilities is a prerequisite. A wider variety of acceptable 3D-printed materials are still needed, as well as better printing resolution (particularly at the nanoscale range), speed, and biomaterial compatibility. The aim of this study is to provide expertise in the most prevalent and new biomaterials used in 3D bio-printing as well as an introduction to the associated approaches that are frequently considered by researchers. Furthermore, an effort has been made to convey the most pertinent implementations of 3D bio-printing processes, such as tissue regeneration, etc., by providing the most significant research together with a comprehensive list of material selection guidelines, constraints, and future prospects.

Abstract
Urologic diseases are commonly diagnosed health problems affecting people around the world. More than 26 million people suffer from urologic diseases and the annual expenditure was more than 11 billion US dollars. The urologic cancers, like bladder cancer, prostate cancer and kidney cancer are always the leading causes of death worldwide, which account for approximately 22% and 10% of the new cancer cases and death, respectively. Organ transplantation is one of the major clinical treatments for urological diseases like end-stage renal disease and urethral stricture, albeit strongly limited by the availability of matching donor organs. Tissue engineering has been recognized as a highly promising strategy to solve the problems of organ donor shortage by the fabrication of artificial organs/tissue. This includes the prospective technology of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting, which has been adapted to various cell types and biomaterials to replicate the heterogeneity of urological organs for the investigation of organ transplantation and disease progression. This review discusses various types of 3D bioprinting methodologies and commonly used biomaterials for urological diseases. The literature shows that advances in this field toward the development of functional urological organs or disease models have progressively increased. Although numerous challenges still need to be tackled, like the technical difficulties of replicating the heterogeneity of urologic organs and the limited biomaterial choices to recapitulate the complicated extracellular matrix components, it has been proved by numerous studies that 3D bioprinting has the potential to fabricate functional urological organs for clinical transplantation and in vitro disease models. Outline the advantages and characteristics of 3D printing compared with traditional methods for urological diseases. Guide the selection of 3D bioprinting technology and material in urological tissue engineering. Discuss the challenges and future perspectives of 3D bioprinting in urological diseases and clinical translation.

Abstract
Corneal disease is one of the most significant causes of blindness around the world. Presently, corneal transplantation is the only way to treat cornea blindness. It should be noted that the amount of cornea that people donate is so much less than that required (1:70). Therefore, scientists have tried to resolve this problem with tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Fabricating cornea with traditional methods is difficult due to their unique properties, such as transparency and geometry. Bioprinting is a technology based on additive manufacturing that can use different biomaterials as bioink for tissue engineering, and the emergence of 3D bioprinting presents a clear possibility to overcome this problem. This new technology requires special materials for printing scaffolds with acceptable biocompatibility. Hydrogels have received significant attention in the past 50 years, and they have been distinguished from other materials because of their unique and outstanding properties. Therefore, hydrogels could be a good bioink for the bioprinting of different scaffolds for corneal tissue engineering. In this review, we discuss the use of different types of hydrogel for bioink for corneal tissue engineering and various methods that have been used for bioprinting. Furthermore, the properties of hydrogels and different types of hydrogels are described.

Abstract
Hydrogels, three-dimensional (3D) networks of hydrophilic polymers formed in water, are a significant type of soft matter used in fundamental and applied sciences. Hydrogels are of particular interest for biomedical applications, owing to their soft elasticity and good biocompatibility. However, the high water content and soft nature of hydrogels often make it difficult to process them into desirable solid forms. The development of 3D printing (3DP) technologies has provided opportunities for the manufacturing of hydrogels, by adopting a freeform fabrication method. Owing to its high printing speed and resolution, vat photopolymerization 3DP has recently attracted considerable interest for hydrogel fabrication, with digital light processing (DLP) becoming a widespread representative technique. Whilst acknowledging that other types of vat photopolymerization 3DP have also been applied for this purpose, we here only focus on DLP and its derivatives. In this review, we first comprehensively outline the most recent advances in both materials and fabrication, including the adaptation of novel hydrogel systems and advances in processing (e.g., volumetric printing and multimaterial integration). Secondly, we summarize the applications of hydrogel DLP, including regenerative medicine, functional microdevices, and soft robotics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that either of these specific review focuses has been adopted in the literature. More importantly, we discuss the major challenges associated with hydrogel DLP and provide our perspectives on future trends. To summarize, this review aims to aid and inspire other researchers investigatng DLP, photocurable hydrogels, and the research fields related to them.

Abstract
Synthetic, degradable macromonomers have been developed to serve as ink for 3D printing technologies based on direct-ink-writing. The macromonomers are purposely designed to be cross-linkable under the radical mechanism, to impart hydrophilicity to the final material, and to have rheological properties matching the printer's requirements. The suitable viscosity enables the ink to be printed at room temperature, in absence of organic solvents, and to be cross-linked to manufacture soft 3D scaffolds that show no indirect cytotoxicity and have a hydration capacity of up to 100% their mass and a compressive modulus in the range of 0.4-2 MPa.

Abstract
Although there have been remarkable advances in cartilage tissue engineering, construction of irregularly shaped cartilage, including auricular, nasal, tracheal, and meniscus cartilages, remains challenging because of the difficulty in reproducing its precise structure and specific function. Among the advanced fabrication methods, three-dimensional (3D) printing technology offers great potential for achieving shape imitation and bionic performance in cartilage tissue engineering. This review discusses requirements for 3D printing of various irregularly shaped cartilage tissues, as well as selection of appropriate printing materials and seed cells. Current advances in 3D printing of irregularly shaped cartilage are also highlighted. Finally, developments in various types of cartilage tissue are described. This review is intended to provide guidance for future research in tissue engineering of irregularly shaped cartilage.

Abstract
Chitosan is one of the most well-known and characterized materials applied in tissue engineering. Due to its unique chemical, biological and physical properties chitosan is frequently used as the main component in a variety of biomaterials such as membranes, scaffolds, drug carriers, hydrogels and, lastly, as a component of bio-ink dedicated to medical applications. Chitosan's chemical structure and presence of active chemical groups allow for modification for tailoring material to meet specific requirements according to intended use such as adequate endurance, mechanical properties or biodegradability time. Chitosan can be blended with natural (gelatin, hyaluronic acid, collagen, silk, alginate, agarose, starch, cellulose, carbon nanotubes, natural rubber latex, κ-carrageenan) and synthetic (PVA, PEO, PVP, PNIPPAm PCL, PLA, PLLA, PAA) polymers as well as with other promising materials such as aloe vera, silica, MMt and many more. Chitosan has several derivates: carboxymethylated, acylated, quaternary ammonium, thiolated, and grafted chitosan. Its versatility and comprehensiveness are confirming by further chitosan utilization as a leading constituent of innovative bio-inks applied for tissue engineering. This review examines all the aspects described above, as well as is focusing on a novel application of chitosan and its modifications, including the 3D bioprinting technique which shows great potential among other techniques applied to biomaterials fabrication.

Abstract
Chitosan, a biocompatible and biodegradable natural polymer, offers great promise as a biomaterial for tissue engineering applications. Chitosan scaffolds have previously been fabricated using additive manufacturing techniques, however, the use of crosslinkers, weak mechanical stability and structural resolution remain problematic. In this study Chitosan-PVAc biopolymer blends were prepared using a non-organic solvent that can prepare a three-dimensional printable biopolymer in less time than conventional methods. Prepared films were characterised using SEM, FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, the swelling properties, biodegradability and printability of the scaffolds were also studied. The fabricated films were biodegradable within a 3-week period and showed controllable swelling properties. Results indicated no toxicity and cells attached onto films. Additionally, hydrogels showed antibacterial activity against S. aureus, S. epidermidis and E.coli, which could potentially prevent implant related infections. Additive manufacturing simulation of PVAc composite 3% chitosan and PVAc composite 4% chitosan were able to produce a layered scaffold without using crosslinkers and therefore confirming printability. Cytocompabability were assessed using a resazurin assay and cell attachment. From these results, we concluded that the printable PVAc composite 3% chitosan and PVAc composite 4% chitosan biopolymer blends meet the requirements of a biomaterial and can potentially be used for biomedical implants.

Poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and chitosan (CS) are widely used as biodegradable and biocompatible polymers with desirable properties for tissue engineering applications. Composite membranes (CS-PCL) with various blend ratios (CS:PCL, w/w) of 0:100, 5:95, 10:90, 15:85, 20:80, and 100:0 were successfully prepared by lyophilization. The thermal stabilities of the CS-PCL membranes were systematically characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), dynamic thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was shown that the blend ratio of PCL and CS had a significant effect on the thermal stability, hydrophilicity, and dynamic mechanical viscoelasticity of the CS-PCL membranes. All the samples in the experimental range exhibited high elasticity at low temperature and high viscosity at high temperatures by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The performances of the CS-PCL membranes were at optimum levels when the blend ratio (w/w) was 10:90. The glass transition temperature of the CS-PCL membranes increased from 64.8 °C to 76.6 °C compared to that of the pure PCL, and the initial thermal decomposition temperature reached 86.7 °C. The crystallinity and porosity went up to 29.97% and 85.61%, respectively, while the tensile strength and elongation at the breakage were 20.036 MPa and 198.72%, respectively. Therefore, the 10:90 (w/w) blend ratio of CS/PCL is recommended to prepare CS-PCL membranes for tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Despite the spontaneous regenerative properties of autologous bone grafts, this technique remains dilatory and restricted to fractures and injuries. Conventional grafting strategies used to treat bone tissue damage have several limitations. This highlights the need for novel approaches to overcome the persisting challenges. Tissue-like constructs that can mimic natural bone structurally and functionally represent a promising strategy. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) is an approach used to develop bioengineered bone with subtle architecture. BTE utilizes biomaterials to accommodate cells and deliver signaling molecules required for bone rejuvenation. Among the various techniques available for scaffold creation, 3D-printing technology is considered to be a superior technique as it enables the design of functional scaffolds with well-defined customizable properties. Among the biomaterials obtained from natural, synthetic, or ceramic origins, naturally derived chitosan (CS) polymers are promising candidates for fabricating reliable tissue constructs. In this review, the physicochemical-biological properties and applications of CS-based 3D-printed scaffolds and their future perspectives in BTE are summarized.

Abstract
Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus, affecting roughly 25% of diabetic patients and resulting in lower limb amputation in over 70% of known cases. In addition to the devastating physiological consequences of DFU and its impact on patient quality of life, DFU has significant clinical and economic implications. Various traditional therapies are implemented to effectively treat DFU. However, emerging technologies such as bioprinting and electrospinning, present an exciting opportunity to improve current treatment strategies through the development of 3D scaffolds, by overcoming the limitations of current wound healing strategies. This review provides a summary on (i) current prevention and treatment strategies available for DFU; (ii) methods of fabrication of 3D scaffolds relevant for this condition; (iii) suitable materials and commonly used molecules for the treatment of DFU; and (iv) future directions offered by emerging technologies.

Abstract
Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have entered a new stage of development by the recent progress in biology, material sciences, and particularly an emerging additive manufacturing technique, three-dimensional (3D) printing. 3D printing is an advanced biofabrication technique which can generate patient-specific scaffolds with highly complex geometries while hosting cells and bioactive agents to accelerate tissue regeneration. Chitosan hydrogels themselves have been widely used for various biomedical applications due to its abundant availability, structural features and favorable biological properties; however, the 3D printing of chitosan-based hydrogels is still under early exploration. Therefore, 3D printing technologies represent a new avenue to explore the potential application of chitosan as an ink for 3D printing, or as a coating on other 3D printed scaffolds. The combination of chitosan-based hydrogels and 3D printing holds much promise in the development of next generation biomedical implants.

Abstract
Radical initiation upon LED light irradiation is discussed herein as well as its application in additive manufacturing. The ability of manufacturing complex structures, freedom of design, low energy consumption, fast prototyping, and excellent spatial resolution are the main benefits of the 3D printing technology by photopolymerization. Therefore, the 3D printing of composites through photopolymerization processes is developing rapidly in the academia and industry, and has been a turning point of additive manufacturing (AM). In the present review, an overview of radical initiation with LEDs (i.e., the photopolymerization LED technology, the photoinitiating systems, and the polymerizable media) and of the main 3D printing methods by photopolymerization, materials, and their applications in different fields has been carried out. As a challenging topic, the issue of light penetration in a filled matrix for the access to composites is discussed, including the light transmittance of the composite, the mismatch of the refractive index between the filler and the monomer, the factors of the filler, and the adverse influence of low light penetration on the 3D printing process. In particular, the popular applications of 3D printing by photopolymerization in biomedical science, electronic industry, materials for adsorption, and 4D printing are discussed. Overall, this review gives an overview of the 3D printing of polymer matrix composites through photopolymerization processes as a benchmark for future research and development.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a revolutionary additive manufacturing technique that allows rapid prototyping of objects with intricate architectures. This Review covers the recent state-of-the-art of biopolymers (protein and carbohydrate-based materials) application in pharmaceutical, bioengineering, and food printing and main reinforcement approaches of biomacromolecular structure for the development of 3D constructs. Some perspectives and main important limitations with the biomaterials utilization for advanced 3D printing procedures are also provided. Because of the improved the ink's flow behavior and enhance the mechanical strength of resulting printed architectures, biopolymers are the most used materials for 3D printing applications. Biobased polymers by taking advantage of modifying the ink viscosity could improve the resolution of deposited layers, printing precision, and consequently, develop well-defined geometries. In this regard, the rheological properties of printable biopolymeric-based inks and factors affecting ink flow behavior related to structural properties of printed constructs are discussed. On the basis of successful applications of biopolymers in 3D printing, it is suggested that other biomacromolecules and nanoparticles combined with the matrix can be introduced into the ink dispersions to enhance the multifunctionality of 3D structures. Furthermore, tuning the biopolymer's structural properties offers the most common and essential approach to attain the printed architectures with precisely tailored geometry. We finish the Review by giving a viewpoint of the upcoming 3D printing process and recognize some of the existing bottlenecks facing the blossoming 3D pharmaceutical, bioengineering, and food printing applications.

The needs of modern surgery triggered the intensive development of transplantology, medical materials science, and tissue engineering. These directions require the use of innovative materials, among which porous polymers occupy one of the leading positions. The use of natural and synthetic polymers makes it possible to adjust the structure and combination of properties of a material to its particular application. This review generalizes and systematizes the results of recent studies describing requirements imposed on the structure and properties of synthetic (or artificial) porous polymer materials and implants on their basis and the advantages and limitations of synthesis methods. The most extensively employed, promising initial materials are considered, and the possible areas of application of polymer implants based on these materials are highlighted.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology has emerged as a powerful biofabrication platform for tissue engineering because of its ability to engineer living cells and biomaterial-based 3D objects. Over the last few decades, droplet-based, extrusion-based, and laser-assisted bioprinters have been developed to fulfill certain requirements in terms of resolution, cell viability, cell density, etc. Simultaneously, various bio-inks based on natural-synthetic biomaterials have been developed and applied for successful tissue regeneration. To engineer more realistic artificial tissues/organs, mixtures of bio-inks with various recipes have also been developed. Taken together, this review describes the fundamental characteristics of the existing bioprinters and bio-inks that have been currently developed, followed by their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, various tissue engineering applications using 3D bioprinting are briefly introduced.

Abstract
The global market for 3D printing materials has grown exponentially in the last decade. Today, photopolymers claim almost half of the material sales worldwide. The lack of sustainable resins, applicable in vat photopolymerization that can compete with commercial materials, however, limits the widespread adoption of this technology. The development of "green" alternatives is of great importance in order to reduce the environmental impact of additive manufacturing. This paper reviews the recent evolutions in the field of sustainable photopolymers for 3D printing. It highlights the synthesis and application of biobased resin components, such as photocurable monomers and oligomers, as well as reinforcing agents derived from natural resources. In addition, the design of biologically degradable and recyclable thermoset products in vat photopolymerization is discussed. Together, those strategies will promote the accurate and waste-free production of a new generation of 3D materials for a sustainable plastics economy in the near future.

Abstract
Fused deposition modeling (FDM) process is carried out at an elevated temperature, preventing the addition of biological factors, drugs, bioactive compounds, etc., during fabrication. To surpass this disadvantage, 3D interlinked porous PLA (Polylactic acid) scaffold was fabricated by FDM, followed by embedment of PCL (polycaprolactone) scaffold into the pores of PLA at room temperature yielding PLA-PCL scaffold. In addition, PLA-PCL scaffold with nanohydroxyapatite (PLA-PCL-nHAP) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PLA-PCL-MWCNT) were also fabricated. Herein, FDM fabricated PLA scaffold functions as a "structural component" whereas embedded PCL scaffold acts as "functional component" which provides a provision to functionalize the scaffolds with desired chemical or biological materials. The embedment process is straightforward, cost effective, and does not require sophistication. Mechanical characterization of scaffolds suggests Young's modulus of PLA-PCL scaffold (16.02 MPa) was higher than FDM fabricated PLA (9.98 MPa) scaffold by virtue of embedded PCL matrix. Besides, Finite element analysis showed, von Mises stress on mandible with scaffolds at 4.04 MPa, whereas mandible with the defect was 6.7 MPa suggesting stress distribution efficiency and mechanical stability of these scaffolds. Further, field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) analysis implied interlinked porous structures with a pore diameter of 50 µm to 300 µm. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed an increased crystallinity (%) of embedment models (PLA-PCL, PLA-PCL-nHAP and PLA-PCL-MWCNT) compared to PLA printed scaffold. Additionally, Raman analysis revealed that the embedment process did not impart chemical alterations in polymeric chains. In vitro analysis with human osteoblasts exhibited osteoconductive nature of the scaffold by supporting mineralization. In brief, the advantages the model is that, it helps to overcome the hassles of manufacturing a filament with desired additives for FDM, and offers provision to incorporate desired concentrations of heat labile bioactive molecules during embedment process at ambient temperature.

Abstract
Thread size and polymer composition are critical properties to consider for achieving a positive healing outcome with a wound dressing. Three-dimensional (3D) printed scaffolds and electrospun mats both offer distinct advantages as replaceable wound dressings. This research aims to determine if the thread size and polymer compositions of the scaffolds affect skin wound healing outcomes, an aspect that has not been adequately explored. Using a modular polymer platform, four polyester direct-write 3D printed scaffolds and electrospun mats were fabricated into wound dressings. The dressings were applied to splinted, full thickness skin wounds in an excisional wound rat model and evaluated against control wounds to which no dressing was applied. Wound closure rates and reduction of the wound bed width were not affected by the thread size or polymer composition. However, epidermal thickness was larger in wounds treated with electrospun dressings and was slightly affected by the polymer composition. Two of the four tested polymer compositions lead to delayed reorganization of granulation tissues. Moreover, enhanced angiogenesis was seen in wounds treated with 3D printed dressings compared to those treated with electrospun dressings. The results from this study can be used to inform the choice of dressing architecture and polymer compositions to achieve positive wound healing outcomes.

Abstract
Novel sampling matrices were manufactured using 3D printing for the detection of respiratory pathogens in expired air. A specific configuration of the matrices was designed using Computer-Aided Design software. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was printed using fused deposition modelling to create a multilayer matrix to enhance the capture of bacteria. The performance of these matrices was compared with gelatine filters that have been used for this work to date. PVA matrices (60 mm diameter) were contaminated with bacteria either by direct inoculation, or by aerosol exposure using an Omron A3 nebuliser. Rough and smooth morphotypes of Mycobacterium abscessus, M. smegmatis and M. bovis BCG, were used in this study to contaminate the matrices. PVA matrices and gelatine sampling filters were contaminated to compare recovery rates for quantitative analyses. These were dissolved in water, bacteria pelleted and DNA extracted followed by a Mycobacterium-specific quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR).The results showed that 3D printed PVA matrices are very effective to capture the bacteria. 3D printed PVA matrix and gelatine filters yielded results of the same order of magnitude for mycobacterial analyses, however, PVA matrix offers several advantages over the latter material. 3D printed PVA is considered as an economic and time-effective matrix as it is cheaper than gelatine filters. PVA is sufficiently robust to be handled and loaded into the surgical masks for sampling, compared to the brittle gelatine filters that required supportive frames. PVA is a synthetic material and it is suitable for DNA-based analyses, whilst gelatine is derived from animal collagen, and carries a high bacterial DNA background that interferes with the target DNA analysis. Furthermore, PVA dissolves in distilled water without requiring chemicals or enzymes, such as the case for gelatine hydrolysis. To summarise, 3D printed PVA sampling matrix is considered a promising tool used for microbiological diagnostic purposes.

Abstract
The fabrication of scaffolds that precisely mimic the natural structure and physiochemical properties of bone is still one of the most challenging tasks in bone tissue engineering. 3D printing techniques have drawn increasing attention due to their ability to fabricate scaffolds with complex structures and multiple bioinks. For bone tissue engineering, lithography-based 3D bioprinting is frequently utilized due to its printing speed, mild printing process, and cost-effective benefits. In this review, lithography-based 3D bioprinting technologies including SLA and DLP are introduced; their typical applications in biological system and bioinks are also explored and summarized. Furthermore, we discussed possible evolution of the hardware/software systems and bioinks of lithography-based 3D bioprinting, as well as their future applications.

Abstract
In this study, three PCL-based polyurethane acrylates were synthesized and further formulated into twelve resins for digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. Three PCL diols with different molecular weights were synthesized via ring-opening reaction of ε-caprolactone on diethylene glycol, with the catalyst stannous octoate. Isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) was reacted with 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA) and the PCL diols form PCL-based polyurethane acrylates. Twelve resins composed of different percentages of PCL-based polyurethane acrylates, poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), propylene glycol (PPG) and photo-initiator were further printed from a DLP 3D printer. The viscosities of twelve resins decreased by 10 times and became printable after adding 30% of PEGDA. The degree of conversion for the twelve resins can reach more than 80% after the post-curing process. By changing the amount of PEGDA and PPG, the mechanical properties of the twelve resins could be adjusted. PUA530-PEG-PPG (70:30:0), PUA800-PEG-PPG (70:30:0), and PUA1000-PEG-PPG (70:30:0) were successfully printed into customized tissue scaffolds. Twelve PCL-based polyurethane photo-curable resins with tunable mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, and degradability were successfully prepared. With the DLP 3D printing technique, a complex structure could be achieved. These resins have great potential for customized tissue engineering and other biomedical application.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) has gained particular attention in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, antibacterial feature, and biodegradability. Hence, many studies have focused on the manufacturing of CS films, scaffolds, particulate, and inks via different production methods. Nowadays, with the possibility of the precise adjustment of porosity size and shape, fiber size, suitable interconnectivity of pores, and creation of patient-specific constructs, 3D printing has overcome the limitations of many traditional manufacturing methods. Therefore, the fabrication of 3D printed CS scaffolds can lead to promising advances in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. A review of additive manufacturing types, CS-based printed constructs, their usages as biomaterials, advantages, and drawbacks can open doors to optimize CS-based constructions for biomedical applications. The latest technological issues and upcoming capabilities of 3D printing with CS-based biopolymers for different applications are also discussed. This review article will act as a roadmap aiming to investigate chitosan as a new feedstock concerning various 3D printing approaches which may be employed in biomedical fields. In fact, the combination of 3D printing and CS-based biopolymers is extremely appealing particularly with regard to certain clinical purposes. Complications of 3D printing coupled with the challenges associated with materials should be recognized to help make this method feasible for wider clinical requirements. This strategy is currently gaining substantial attention in terms of several industrial biomedical products. In this review, the key 3D printing approaches along with revealing historical background are initially presented, and ultimately, the applications of different 3D printing techniques for fabricating chitosan constructs will be discussed. The recognition of essential complications and technical problems related to numerous 3D printing techniques and CS-based biopolymer choices according to clinical requirements is crucial. A comprehensive investigation will be required to encounter those challenges and to completely understand the possibilities of 3D printing in the foreseeable future.

Abstract
The fabrication of intricate and long-term stable 3D polymeric scaffolds by a 3D printing technique is still a challenge. In the biomedical field, hydrogel materials are very frequently used because of their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, however the improvement of their processability and mechanical properties is still required. This paper reports the fabrication of dual crosslinked 3D scaffolds using a low concentrated (<10 wt%) ink of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/chitosan and a novel crosslinking agent, glycerylphytate (G1Phy) to overcome the current limitations in the 3D printing field using hydrogels. The applied methodology consisted of a first ultraviolet light (UV) photopolymerization followed by a post-printing ionic crosslinking treatment with G1Phy. This crosslinker provides a robust framework and avoids the necessity of neutralization with strong bases. The blend ink showed shear-thinning behavior and excellent printability in the form of a straight and homogeneous filament. UV curing was undertaken simultaneously to 3D deposition, which enhanced precision and shape fidelity (resolution ≈150 μm), and prevented the collapse of the subsequent printed layers (up to 28 layers). In the second step, the novel G1Phy ionic crosslinker agent provided swelling and long term stability properties to the 3D scaffolds. The multi-layered printed scaffolds were mechanically stable under physiological conditions for at least one month. Preliminary in vitro assays using L929 fibroblasts showed very promising results in terms of adhesion, spreading, and proliferation in comparison to other phosphate-based traditional crosslinkers (i.e. TPP). We envision that the proposed combination of the blend ink and 3D printing approach can have widespread applications in the regeneration of soft tissues.

Abstract
The realization of biomimetic microenvironments for cell biology applications such as organ-on-chip, in vitro drug screening, and tissue engineering is one of the most fascinating research areas in the field of bioengineering. The continuous evolution of additive manufacturing techniques provides the tools to engineer these architectures at different scales. Moreover, it is now possible to tailor their biomechanical and topological properties while taking inspiration from the characteristics of the extracellular matrix, the three-dimensional scaffold in which cells proliferate, migrate, and differentiate. In such context, there is therefore a continuous quest for synthetic and nature-derived composite materials that must hold biocompatible, biodegradable, bioactive features and also be compatible with the envisioned fabrication strategy. The structure of the current review is intended to provide to both micro-engineers and cell biologists a comparative overview of the characteristics, advantages, and drawbacks of the major 3D printing techniques, the most promising biomaterials candidates, and the trade-offs that must be considered in order to replicate the properties of natural microenvironments.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies can be widely used for producing detailed geometries based on individual and particular demands. Some applications are related to the production of personalized devices, implants (orthopedic and dental), drug dosage forms (antibacterial, immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, etc.), or 3D implants that contain active pharmaceutical treatments, which favor cellular proliferation and tissue regeneration. This review is focused on the generation of 3D printed polymer-based objects that present antibacterial properties. Two main different alternatives of obtaining these 3D printed objects are fully described, which employ different polymer sources. The first one uses natural polymers that, in some cases, already exhibit intrinsic antibacterial capacities. The second alternative involves the use of synthetic polymers, and thus takes advantage of polymers with antimicrobial functional groups, as well as alternative strategies based on the modification of the surface of polymers or the elaboration of composite materials through adding certain antibacterial agents or incorporating different drugs into the polymeric matrix.

Abstract
As acrylated polymers become more widely used in additive manufacturing, their potential applications toward biomedicine also raise the demand for biodegradable, photocurable polymeric materials. Polycaprolactone diacrylate (PCLDA) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) are two popular choices of materials for stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing additive manufacturing (DLP-AM), and have been applied to many biomedical related research. However, both materials are known to degrade at a relatively low rate in vivo, limiting their applications in biomedical engineering. In this work, biodegradable, photocurable copolymers are introduced by copolymerizing PCLDA and/or PEGDA with poly(glycerol sebacate) acrylate (PGSA) to form a network polymer. Two main factors are discussed: the effect of degree of acrylation in PGSA and the weight ratio between the prepolymers toward the mechanical and degradation properties. It is found that by blending prepolymers with various degree of acrylation and at various weight ratios, the viscosity of the prepolymers remains stable, and are even more 3D printable than pure substances. The formation of various copolymers yielded a database with selectable Young's moduli between 0.67⁻10.54 MPa, and the overall degradation rate was significantly higher than pure substance. In addition, it is shown that copolymers fabricated by DLP-AM fabrication presents higher mechanical strength than those fabricated via direct UV exposure. With the tunable mechanical and degradation properties, the photocurable, biodegradable copolymers are expected to enable a wider application of additive manufacturing toward tissue engineering.

Abstract
Photocured materials with self-healing function have the merit of long lifetime and environmentally benign preparation process and thus find potential applications in various fields. Herein, a novel imidazolium-containing photocurable monomer, (6-(3-(3(2-hydroxyethyl)-1 H-imidazol-3-ium bromide)propanoyloxy)hexyl acrylate, IM-A), was designed and synthesized. Self-healing polymers were prepared by fast photocuring with IM-A, isobornyl acrylate, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyl acrylate, and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate as the monomers. The mechanical and self-healing properties of the polymers were tuned by varying the contents of IM-A and other monomers. The as-prepared self-healing polymer IB7-IM5 exhibited a tensile strength of 3.1 MPa, elongation at break of 205%, healing efficiency of 93%, and a wide healing temperature range from room temperature to 120 °C. The self-healing polymer was also employed as a flexible substrate to fabricate a flexible electronic device, which could be healed and completely restore its conductivity after the device was damaged.
