Greenhouse gas emissions are significantly contributing to climate change, posing one of the serious threats to our planet. Addressing these emissions urgently is imperative to prevent irreversible planetary changes. One effective long-term mitigation strategy is achieving carbon neutrality. Although numerous countries aim for carbon neutrality by 2050, only a few are on track to realize this ambition. Existing technological solutions, including chemical absorption, cryogenic separation, and membrane separation, are available but tend to be costly and time intensive. Bio-capture methods present a promising opportunity in greenhouse gas mitigation research. Recent developments in biotechnology for capturing greenhouse gases have demonstrated both effectiveness and long-term benefits. This review emphasizes the recent advancements in bio-capture techniques, showcasing them as dependable and economical solutions for carbon neutrality. The article briefly outlines various bio-capture methods and underscores their potential for industrial application. Moreover, it investigates into the challenges faced when integrating bio-capture with carbon capture and storage technology. The study concludes by exploring the recent trends and prospective enhancements in ecosystem revitalization and industrial decarbonization through green conversion techniques, reinforcing the path towards carbon neutrality.

Rhizosphere engineering for soil carbon sequestration

The rhizosphere is the central hotspot of water and nutrient uptake by plants, rhizodeposition, microbial activities, and plant-soil-microbial interactions. The plasticity of plants offers possibilities to engineer the rhizosphere to mitigate climate change. We define rhizosphere engineering as targeted manipulation of plants, soil, microorganisms, and management to shift rhizosphere processes for specific aims [e.g., carbon (C) sequestration]. The rhizosphere components can be engineered by agronomic, physical, chemical, biological, and genomic approaches. These approaches increase plant productivity with a special focus on C inputs belowground, increase microbial necromass production, protect organic compounds and necromass by aggregation, and decrease C losses. Finally, we outline multifunctional options for rhizosphere engineering: how to boost C sequestration, increase soil health, and mitigate global change effects.

Engineering biology and climate change mitigation: Policy considerations

Engineering biology (EngBio) is a dynamic field that uses gene editing, synthesis, assembly, and engineering to design new or modified biological systems. EngBio applications could make a significant contribution to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, policy support will be needed if EngBio is to fulfil its climate mitigation potential. What form should such policies take, and what EngBio applications should they target? This paper reviews EngBio's potential climate contributions to assist policymakers shape regulations and target resources and, in so doing, to facilitate democratic deliberation on desirable futures.

How to engineer the unknown: Advancing a quantitative and predictive understanding of plant and soil biology to address climate change

Our basic understanding of carbon cycling in the biosphere remains qualitative and incomplete, precluding our ability to effectively engineer novel solutions to climate change. How can we attempt to engineer the unknown? This challenge has been faced before in plant biology, providing a roadmap to guide future efforts. We use examples from over a century of photosynthesis research to illustrate the key principles that will set future plant engineering on a solid footing, namely, an effort to identify the key control variables, quantify the effects of systematically tuning these variables, and use theory to account for these observations. The main contributions of plant synthetic biology will stem not from delivering desired genotypes but from enabling the kind of predictive understanding necessary to rationally design these genotypes in the first place. Only then will synthetic plant biology be able to live up to its promise.

PlantACT! - how to tackle the climate crisis

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have created a global climate crisis which requires immediate interventions to mitigate the negative effects on all aspects of life on this planet. As current agriculture and land use contributes up to 25% of total GHG emissions, plant scientists take center stage in finding possible solutions for a transition to sustainable agriculture and land use. In this article, the PlantACT! (Plants for climate ACTion!) initiative of plant scientists lays out a road map of how and in which areas plant scientists can contribute to finding immediate, mid-term, and long-term solutions, and what changes are necessary to implement these solutions at the personal, institutional, and funding levels.

Microalgae-based biotechnological sequestration of carbon dioxide for net zero emissions

Excessive carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions into the atmosphere have become a dire threat to the human race and environmental sustainability. The ultimate goal of net zero emissions requires combined efforts on CO₂ sequestration (natural sinks, biomass fixation, engineered approaches) and reduction in CO₂ emissions while delivering economic growth (CO₂ valorization for a circular carbon bioeconomy, CCE). We discuss microalgae-based CO₂ biosequestration, including flue gas cultivation, biotechnological approaches for enhanced CO₂ biosequestration, technological innovations for microalgal cultivation, and CO₂ valorization/biofuel productions. We highlight challenges to current practices and future perspectives with the goal of contributing to environmental sustainability, net zero emissions, and the CCE.

Diversity and Selection of Surface Marine Microbiomes in the Atlantic-Influenced Arctic

Arctic marine environments are experiencing rapid changes due to the polar amplification of global warming. These changes impact the habitat of the cold-adapted microbial communities, which underpin biogeochemical cycles and marine food webs. We comparatively investigated the differences in prokaryotic and microeukaryotic taxa between summer surface water microbiomes sampled along a latitudinal transect from the ice-free southern Barents Sea and into the sea-ice-covered Nansen Basin to disentangle the dominating community (ecological) selection processes driving phylogenetic diversity. The community structure and richness of each site-specific microbiome were assessed in relation to the physical and biogeochemical conditions of the environment. A strong homogeneous deterministic selection process was inferred across the entire sampling transect via a phylogenetic null modeling approach. The microbial species richness and diversity were not negatively influenced by northward decreasing temperature and salinity. The results also suggest that regional phytoplankton blooms are a major prevalent factor in governing the bacterial community structure. This study supports the consideration that strong homogeneous selection is imposed across these cold-water marine environments uniformly, regardless of geographic assignments within either the Nansen Basin or the Barents Sea.

A review of recent advances in engineering bacteria for enhanced CO2 capture and utilization

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is emitted into the atmosphere due to some anthropogenic activities, such as the combustion of fossil fuels and industrial output. As a result, fears about catastrophic global warming and climate change have intensified. In the face of these challenges, conventional CO₂ capture technologies are typically ineffective, dangerous, and contribute to secondary pollution in the environment. Biological systems for CO₂ conversion, on the other hand, provide a potential path forward owing to its high application selectivity and adaptability. Moreover, many bacteria can use CO₂ as their only source of carbon and turn it into value-added products. The purpose of this review is to discuss recent significant breakthroughs in engineering bacteria to utilize CO₂ and other one-carbon compounds as substrate. In the same token, the paper also summarizes and presents aspects such as microbial CO₂ fixation pathways, engineered bacteria involved in CO₂ fixation, up-to-date genetic and metabolic engineering approaches for CO₂ fixation, and promising research directions for the production of value-added products from CO₂. This review's findings imply that using biological systems like modified bacteria to manage CO₂ has the added benefit of generating useful industrial byproducts like biofuels, pharmaceutical compounds, and bioplastics. The major downside, from an economic standpoint, thus far has been related to methods of cultivation. However, thanks to genetic engineering approaches, this can be addressed by large production yields. As a result, this review aids in the knowledge of various biological systems that can be used to construct a long-term CO₂ mitigation technology at an industrial scale, in this instance bacteria-based CO₂capture/utilization technology.

Interfacing Machine Learning and Microbial Omics: A Promising Means to Address Environmental Challenges

Microbial communities are ubiquitous and carry an exceptionally broad metabolic capability. Upon environmental perturbation, microbes are also amongst the first natural responsive elements with perturbation-specific cues and markers. These communities are thereby uniquely positioned to inform on the status of environmental conditions. The advent of microbial omics has led to an unprecedented volume of complex microbiological data sets. Importantly, these data sets are rich in biological information with potential for predictive environmental classification and forecasting. However, the patterns in this information are often hidden amongst the inherent complexity of the data. There has been a continued rise in the development and adoption of machine learning (ML) and deep learning architectures for solving research challenges of this sort. Indeed, the interface between molecular microbial ecology and artificial intelligence (AI) appears to show considerable potential for significantly advancing environmental monitoring and management practices through their application. Here, we provide a primer for ML, highlight the notion of retaining biological sample information for supervised ML, discuss workflow considerations, and review the state of the art of the exciting, yet nascent, interdisciplinary field of ML-driven microbial ecology. Current limitations in this sphere of research are also addressed to frame a forward-looking perspective toward the realization of what we anticipate will become a pivotal toolkit for addressing environmental monitoring and management challenges in the years ahead.

Subsurface hydrocarbon degradation strategies in low- and high-sulfate coal seam communities identified with activity-based metagenomics

Environmentally relevant metagenomes and BONCAT-FACS derived translationally active metagenomes from Powder River Basin coal seams were investigated to elucidate potential genes and functional groups involved in hydrocarbon degradation to methane in coal seams with high- and low-sulfate levels. An advanced subsurface environmental sampler allowed the establishment of coal-associated microbial communities under in situ conditions for metagenomic analyses from environmental and translationally active populations. Metagenomic sequencing demonstrated that biosurfactants, aerobic dioxygenases, and anaerobic phenol degradation pathways were present in active populations across the sampled coal seams. In particular, results suggested the importance of anaerobic degradation pathways under high-sulfate conditions with an emphasis on fumarate addition. Under low-sulfate conditions, a mixture of both aerobic and anaerobic pathways was observed but with a predominance of aerobic dioxygenases. The putative low-molecular-weight biosurfactant, lichysein, appeared to play a more important role compared to rhamnolipids. The methods used in this study—subsurface environmental samplers in combination with metagenomic sequencing of both total and translationally active metagenomes—offer a deeper and environmentally relevant perspective on community genetic potential from coal seams poised at different redox conditions broadening the understanding of degradation strategies for subsurface carbon.

Biotechnology for carbon capture and fixation: Critical review and future directions

To mitigate the growing threat of climate change and develop novel technologies that can eliminate carbon dioxide, the most abundant greenhouse gas derived from the flue gas stream of the fossil fuel-fired power stations, is momentous. The development of carbon capture and sequestration-based technologies may play a significant role in this regard. Carbon fixation mostly occurs by photosynthesizing plants as well as photo and chemoautotrophic microbes that turn the atmospheric carbon dioxide into organic materials via their enzymes. Biofuel can offer a sustainable solution for carbon mitigation. The pragmatic implementation of biofuel production processes is neither cost-effective nor has been proven safe over the long term. Searching for ways to enhance biofuel generation by the employment of genetic engineering is vital. Carbon biosequestration can help to curb the greenhouse effect. In addition, new genomic approaches, which are able to use gene-splicing biotechnology techniques and recombinant DNA technology to produce genetically modified organisms, can contribute to improvement in sustainable and renewable biofuel and biomaterial production from microorganisms. Biopolymers, Biosurfactants, and Biochars are suggested as sustainable future trends. This study aims to pave the way for implementing biotechnology methods to capture carbon and decrease the demand and consumption of fossil fuels as well as the emissions of greenhouse gases. Having a better image of microorganisms' potential role in carbon capture and storage can be prolific in developing powerful techniques to reduce CO₂ emissions.
