Abstract
Millions of family members and/or friends in the U.S. serve as unpaid caregivers for individuals with chronic conditions, such as cancer. Caregiving for someone undergoing an intense allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is particularly demanding, with accompanying physical and psychological stress. Increased stress and stress-related symptoms could make it difficult for caregivers to fulfill their roles and could negatively impact the health status and quality of life of themselves and the recipients. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising technology increasingly used for treatment and wellness in various medical settings. There is growing evidence that studies have reported the positive effects of the VR intervention in managing and reducing stress among diverse populations in various clinical scenarios; however, no published studies have focused on family caregivers of patients with cancer. The study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a four-week nature-based VR intervention and to examine the effectiveness of the VR intervention on stress in HSCT caregivers. This study comprises two phases. Phase I of the study will be a single-arm pre-post design focused on assessing the feasibility and acceptability of the VR intervention. Phase II of the study will be a prospective randomized controlled group design to examine the effectiveness of the VR intervention on perceived stress. Adults (≥ 18 years) who serve as primary caregivers for a person who will undergo an allogeneic HSCT will be recruited. Fifteen participants will be enrolled for Phase I and 94 participants for Phase II (Active VR arm N=47; Sham VR arm N=47). The nature-based immersive VR program contains 360° high-definition videos of nature scenes along with nature sounds through a head-mounted display (HMD) for 20 minutes every day for four weeks. Primary outcome is perceived stress measured by the Perceived Stress Scale. Secondary/exploratory outcomes are stress-related symptoms (e.g., fatigue, sleep disturbance) and physiological biomarkers (e.g., cortisol, alpha-amylase). The importance and innovativeness of this study consist of using a first-of-its-kind, immersive VR technology to target stress and investigating the health outcomes assessed by validated objective biomarkers as well as self-report measures of the nature-based intervention in the caregiver population. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop a Web App from a predictive model to estimate the risk of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission for patients with covid-19. METHODS An applied technological production research was carried out with the development of Streamlit using Python, considering the decision tree model that presented the best performance (AUC 0.668). RESULTS Based on the variables associated with Precision Nursing, Streamlit stratifies patients admitted to clinical units who are most likely to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, serving as a decision-making support tool for healthcare professionals. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS The performance of the model may have been influenced by the start of vaccination during the data collection period, however, the Web App via Streamlit proved to be a feasible tool for presenting research results, due to the ease of understanding by nurses and its potential for supporting clinical decision-making.

Abstract
Background: Children are increasingly exposed to stressors that can affect their immune function. Given the possible negative effects of stress and inflammation on health, researchers need to use appropriate biomarkers to measure both the effects of stress and subsequent inflammatory responses. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to briefly review stress and inflammatory pathways, identify biomarkers used to measure chronic stress and chronic inflammation particularly in children in clinical and community settings, and to discuss methodological considerations when measuring stress and inflammation in children. Discussion: Biomarkers of chronic stress can be classified as central, meaning they are made in the brain, or peripheral, meaning they are made in the peripheral tissues in response to central signals. The peripheral biomarker, cortisol, is most frequently used in the community setting. In addition, indirect measures, such as oxytocin, may complement the assessment of stress. Common biomarkers of chronic inflammation in children are C-reactive protein (CRP), TNF-α, and IL-6. Similarly, indirect biomarkers of chronic inflammation, such as IL-2 and IL-1β, may also be considered. Conclusions: Various types of specimens can be used to measure these biomarkers of stress and inflammation including blood, saliva, urine, sweat, hair, nails, and tears. Each type of specimen has different requirements for collection, storage, and assay. Future research would benefit from standardized biomarker levels across age and development in children and incorporation of other biomarkers.

Abstract
Objective Clinical triage in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) places a heavy burden on senior clinicians during a pandemic situation. However, risk stratification based on serum biomarker bioprofiling could be implemented by a larger, nonspecialist workforce. Method Measures of Complement Activation and inflammation in patientS with CoronAvirus DisEase 2019 (CASCADE) patients (n = 72), (clinicaltrials.gov: NCT04453527), classified as mild, moderate, or severe (by support needed to maintain SpO2 > 93%), and healthy controls (HC, n = 20), were bioprofiled using 76 immunological biomarkers and compared using ANOVA. Spearman correlation analysis on biomarker pairs was visualised via heatmaps. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) models were generated to identify patients likely to deteriorate. An X-Gradient-boost (XGB) model trained on CASCADE data to triage patients as mild, moderate, and severe was retrospectively employed to classify COROnavirus Nomacopan Emergency Treatment for covid 19 infected patients with early signs of respiratory distress (CORONET) patients (n = 7) treated with nomacopan. Results The LDA models distinctly discriminated between deteriorators, nondeteriorators, and HC, with IL-27, IP-10, MDC, ferritin, C5, and sC5b-9 among the key predictor variables during deterioration. C3a and C5 were elevated in all severity classes vs. HC (p < 0.05). sC5b-9 was elevated in the "moderate" and "severe" categories vs. HC (p < 0.001). Heatmap analysis shows a pairwise increase of negatively correlated pairs with IL-27. The XGB model indicated sC5b-9, IL-8, MCP1, and prothrombin F1 and F2 were key discriminators in nomacopan-treated patients (CORONET study). Conclusion Distinct immunological fingerprints from serum biomarkers exist within different severity classes of COVID-19, and harnessing them using machine learning enabled the development of clinically useful triage and prognostic tools. Complement-mediated lung injury plays a key role in COVID-19 pneumonia, and preliminary results hint at the usefulness of a C5 inhibitor in COVID-19 recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biological markers contribute to the precise intervention across the continuum of frailty severity. Few studies have explored the advantages of biological markers collected as part of primary care data among community-dwelling older adult population and controversy remains regarding the classic biological markers for frailty. METHODS We recruited a total of 8791 adults with a mean age of 71.95 years who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria in Guancheng District and Dalang Town, Dongguan, China. Frailty was assessed by a Chinese frailty evaluation scale. Frailty status was classified with 33-item modified frailty index and latent class analysis was applied to explore the latent classes (subtypes) of frailty. We measured biological markers on blood samples collected. We identify association between specific biological markers or patterns and frailty by logistic regression and association rule mining (ARM) based on the Apriori algorithm. RESULTS Multivariable analysis of our data showed that an elevated white blood cell (WBC) count and high cholesterol (CHOL) level were associated with pre-frailty (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.231, 95 % confidence interval [CI] = 1.009-1.501; aOR = 0.703, 95 % CI = 0.623-0.793) and frailty (aOR = 1.500, 95 % CI = 1.130-1.993; aOR = 0.561, 95 % CI = 0.461-0.684) compared with the normal groups. Importantly, significantly high level of CHOL was associated with a lower risk of four frailty subtypes compared with relatively healthy participants with the most power of association in the multi-frail group (aOR = 0.182, 95 % CI = 0.086-0.386). Based on ARM technique to develop correlation analysis to identify important high-risk clusters among older adult transitions from non-frail to frailty, patterns for normal level of CHOL co-occurred with an elevated creatinine (CREA) level have a significant association with the risk of frailty (aOR = 7.787, 95 % CI = 1.978-30.648) after adjusting for targeted confounders. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the correlation between classic biological markers, especially CHOL and frailty status and subtypes among community-dwelling older adult, in the primary care setting. Further large-scale prospective studies are still needed to confirm the role of classic biological markers in frailty.

Abstract
With the changing lifestyle and spectrum of diseases among Chinese people, the life-cycle approach to health has been given national strategic importance. Over the past decade, global nursing researchers have gradually started to pay more attention to the research related to precision nursing at different stages of the life cycle. Researchers have applied multi-omics to explore the pathogenesis and novel biomarkers of relevant symptoms in tumor patients or patients with chronic diseases in order to manage symptoms with better precision. However, systematic theories of precision nursing of life-cycle health and disease have not yet been developed, and the research field and its implications still need to be continuously expanded and innovated. In the nursing discipline, the advantages of interdisciplinary integration should be given full play and the precise and effective resolution of life-cycle health problems should be taken as its goal. Through accurately defining key quantitative objective indicators of nursing care, the nursing discipline will be able to achieve early identification of life-cycle health problems, clarify the occurrence and patterns of change in life-cycle health problems, and gain a better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms. Precise and effective nursing-related technologies and products of non-medication and non-surgery nature should be developed to achieve better precision in nursing interventions, thereby effectively promoting recovery from diseases and improving the overall health of the people.

Abstract
With the development of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), major breakthroughs have been made in this field of study. However, the research fields still need to be continuously expanded to meet the needs of patients. The concept of precision therapy is widely applied in the field of nursing. Under the concept of ERAS, practical studies of applying precision nursing for the perioperative period have already been conducted, exploring such issues as precision nursing assessment, precision nursing intervention design, precision risk prediction model, and information technology to assist precision nursing practice. Research findings have preliminarily validated the safety and effectiveness of applying precision nursing for ERAS in the perioperative period. Herein, we reviewed the reported findings of relevant research published in recent years and identified the following problems in the implementation of precision nursing under the ERAS concept, a lack of implementation standards, challenges concerning the the role of nurses, a lack of high-quality research evidence in the existing literature, and a relevant big data processing platform that China does not have and therefore cannot carry out data sharing, integration, mining, and utilization. We also made suggestions for effective improvement and discussed research prospects. In the future, multidisciplinary collaboration, translational medical research, and the development of various innovative tools are to be strengthened to help improve the quality and effectiveness of nursing care. We hope to provide reference for improving the scientific and targeted implementation of precision nursing for ERAS in the perioperative period.

Abstract
Background: One of the physiological changes that is most closely associated with frailty is the increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines, and IL-6 in particular. Most studies have demonstrated this association using blood samples. We analyzed the relationship between frailty syndrome, individual frailty criteria, and IL-6 levels obtained by saliva tests. Methods: A cross-sectional pilot study was performed among women institutionalized in nursing homes. Frailty was defined as having three or more of the following components: low lean mass, weakness, self-reported exhaustion, low activity level, and slow walking speed; prefrailty was defined as having one or two of those components. Results: There was a significant and positive correlation between the frailty score and salivary IL-6 concentration. Regarding the associations between IL-6 and individual dichotomized frailty criteria, there were significant differences in salivary IL-6 concentration in two frailty criteria: weight loss (p = 0.002) and low physical activity (p = 0.007). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that IL-6 concentration significantly (p < 0.05) (although moderately) discriminated patients that progressed in the frailty syndrome (the area under the curve value was 0.697 with 95% CI 0.566–0.827). Conclusions: Salivary IL-6 concentration can be used as potential biomarker of frailty syndrome and as a tool to monitor the effects of interventions in frail individuals.

Abstract
Chronic stress is a well-established risk factor for cardiometabolic disease. Caregiving for individuals with cancer is perceived as a chronic stressor yet research on the risk for cardiometabolic disease in this population, opposed to the elderly and those with Alzheimer's disease, is limited. Additionally, few studies have explored the early physiological changes that occur in family caregivers suggesting an elevated risk for illness. This cross-sectional study was designed to examine levels of cardiometabolic risk biomarkers and their correlates in caregivers of patients with colorectal cancer. Caregivers completed questionnaires that measure exposures to stress and vulnerability factors, psychological distress, and health habits as potential correlates. Traditional lipid and nontraditional lipoprotein particle biomarkers (e.g. concentration and size for all lipoprotein classes) were assayed from blood serum. Caregivers (N = 83, mean age = 49.8, 73% female) displayed levels of cardiometabolic biomarkers that suggest an elevated risk for cardiometabolic disease. Caregivers who were Hispanic, married, highly educated, employed, reported more hours spent caregiving daily, experienced higher caregiver burden associated with the lack of family support and impact on schedule, and psychological distress, demonstrated an elevated risk for cardiometabolic disease; primarily determined by nontraditional lipid biomarkers - large TRL-P, LDL-P, small HDL-P, large HDL-P, TRL-Z, LDL-Z and HDL-Z. These findings suggest that traditional lipid biomarkers may not be robust enough to detect early physiological changes associated with cardiometabolic disease risk in family caregivers. Moreover, findings reiterate the importance of assessing caregiver burden and providing evidence-based interventions to manage caregiving stress with the potential to improve caregivers' cardiometabolic health.

Association of cancer caregiver stress and negative attribution style with depressive symptoms and cortisol: a cross-sectional study. Support Care Cancer 2022; 30:4945-4952. Abstract
PURPOSE We examined the effect of informal cancer caregiver stress and negative attribution style (NAS) on depressive symptoms and salivary cortisol. METHOD The sample came from a hospital bone marrow unit and caregiver support organizations and included 60 informal cancer caregivers (51.7% partners) of individuals with cancer (provided care for a median of 27.5 h per week for 12 months) and 46 non-caregiver participants. In this cross-sectional study, participants completed questionnaires assessing NAS and depressive symptoms and provided saliva samples to measure cortisol. RESULTS Linear regressions demonstrated that cancer caregiver stress (p = 0.001) and the cancer caregiver stress by NAS interaction (p = 0.017), but not NAS alone (p = 0.152), predicted depressive symptoms. Caregivers independent of their NAS and non-caregivers high in NAS reported high depression while non-caregivers low in NAS reported low depression. Neither cancer caregiver stress (p = 0.920) nor NAS alone (p = 0.114), but their interaction, predicted cortisol (p = 0.036). Higher NAS was associated with a higher cortisol in both groups while non-caregivers had higher cortisol than caregivers. CONCLUSIONS If the findings can be replicated, consideration of NAS in existing interventions to support informal cancer caregivers in managing chronic stress appears warranted.

Abstract
There is a paucity of research exploring how relationships with household pets may impact maternal mental health. We are unaware of any study to date that has examined associations between individuals' relationships with their pets and psychological adjustment in the perinatal period. Using a biobehavioral lens, this paper provides a narrative overview of the literature on perinatal mental health and human-animal interaction (HAI). We focus on the role of social relationships, stress, and stress reduction in relation to perinatal mental health; the role of HAI in perceptions of social support, stressors, and stress reduction; and gaps in empirical knowledge concerning the role of HAI in perinatal mental health. Finally, we integrate contemporary biobehavioral models of perinatal mental health and HAI (i.e., Comprehensive Model of Mental Health during the Perinatal Period and the HAI-HPA Transactional Model) to propose a new conceptual framework that depicts ways in which HAI during the perinatal period may influence maternal and child health and wellbeing. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to consider the role of HAI in biobehavioral responses and mental health during the perinatal period. We conclude with recommendations for future research and improved perinatal care.

Abstract
Diagnosis of CHD substantially affects parent mental health and family functioning, thereby influencing child neurodevelopmental and psychosocial outcomes. Recognition of the need to proactively support parent mental health and family functioning following cardiac diagnosis to promote psychosocial adaptation has increased substantially over recent years. However, significant gaps in knowledge remain and families continue to report critical unmet psychosocial needs. The Parent Mental Health and Family Functioning Working Group of the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Outcome Collaborative was formed in 2018 through support from an R13 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to identify significant knowledge gaps related to parent mental health and family functioning, as well as critical questions that must be answered to further knowledge, policy, care, and outcomes. Conceptually driven investigations are needed to identify parent mental health and family functioning factors with the strongest influence on child outcomes, to obtain a deeper understanding of the biomarkers associated with these factors, and to better understand how parent mental health and family functioning influence child outcomes over time. Investigations are also needed to develop, test, and implement sustainable models of mental health screening and assessment, as well as effective interventions to optimise parent mental health and family functioning to promote psychosocial adaptation. The critical questions and investigations outlined in this paper provide a roadmap for future research to close gaps in knowledge, improve care, and promote positive outcomes for families of children with CHD.

Abstract
Precision health, by means of the support of precision medicine and precision nursing, is able to support clinical decision making in order to tailor optimal health-care decisions, around the individual characteristics of patients. The operational arm of precision health is represented by the use of biomarkers that can give useful information about disease susceptibility, exposure, evolution and response to treatment. Omics, imaging and clinical biomarkers are actually studied for their ability to positively impact health-care management. In this article, we try to address the role of biomarkers in the context of modern medicine and nursing with the view of improving patients care.

Abstract
A theme of this article is the theory-research link and its essential role in advancing nursing science and practice. Concern is expressed over the current status of nursing theory relative to the advances in research and practice. Soon-to-be and current theoreticians and scientists are encouraged to champion not just nursing theory proper but scientific nursing theories that have explanatory power. The role of the precision health movement in facilitating development of scientific theory is explored.

OBJECTIVES To examine the effect of informal cancer caregiving and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) on depressive symptoms and salivary cortisol levels. SAMPLE & SETTING The sample was recruited from a hospital bone marrow unit and caregiver support organizations. It included 60 informal cancer caregivers (52% partners) of individuals with cancer who provided care for a median of 27.5 hours per week for 12 months, and 46 noncaregiver participants. METHODS & VARIABLES In this cross-sectional study, participants completed questionnaires assessing RNT and depressive symptoms and provided saliva samples to measure cortisol levels. RESULTS Cancer caregiving and RNT, but not the interaction, were associated with more depressive symptoms. RNT, but not cancer caregiving, was associated with salivary cortisol. A disordinal interaction effect suggests that cancer caregiving was associated with lower cortisol levels, and RNT in noncaregivers was associated with higher cortisol levels. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING Given that RNT is related to depressive symptoms and cortisol, connecting cancer caregivers who experience RNT to resources and the development and evaluation of brief nurse-led interventions to reduce RNT in informal cancer caregivers seems warranted.

Abstract
Background Since 2008, Bhutanese refugees have been resettled in Canada, including Ottawa. This relocation and resettling process is associated with significant physical and psychological stress, as individuals acclimatize to a new country. Purpose To assess the relationship between coping strategies and psychological well-being of Bhutanese refugees resettled in Ottawa. Methods A cross-sectional survey utilizing a convenience sample of adults (n = 110) was conducted in the fall of 2015 in Ottawa. Two tools, Brief COPE and general well-being schedule were used. Results Bhutanese refugees were in moderate distress. Using multiple linear regression, age, education, and three coping strategies (positive reframing, self-blame, and venting) were identified as predictors of general well-being ( F (11, 96) = 3.61, p < .001, R2 = 21.2%). Higher levels of education and positive reframing were associated with greater general well-being scores, while self-blame and well-being between ages 41 and 50 years were inversely associated with general well-being. Conclusions Findings suggest that a broad intersectorial approach between nurses and partner agencies is needed to enhance the mental health of this population for better adjustment in the host country. Nurses could provide support and counseling to minimize the use of self-blame and venting and promote positive coping strategies.

Abstract
The objectives of this literature review were to (1) synthesize biological processes linked to frailty and their corresponding biomarkers and (2) identify potential associations among these processes and biomarkers. In September 2016, PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched. Studies examining biological processes related to frailty in older adults (≥60 years) were included. Studies were excluded if they did not employ specific measures of frailty, did not report the association between biomarkers and frailty, or focused on nonelderly samples (average age < 60). Review articles, commentaries, editorials, and non-English articles were also excluded. Fifty-two articles were reviewed, reporting six biological processes related to frailty and multiple associated biomarkers. The processes (biomarkers) include brain changes (neurotrophic factor, gray matter volume), endocrine dysregulation (growth hormones [insulin-like growth factor-1 and binding proteins], hormones related to glucose and insulin, the vitamin D axis, thyroid function, reproductive axis, and hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis), enhanced inflammation (C-reactive protein, interleukin-6), immune dysfunction (neutrophils, monocytes, neopterin, CD8+CD28−T cells, albumin), metabolic imbalance (micronutrients, metabolites, enzyme-activity indices, metabolic end products), and oxidative stress (antioxidants, telomere length, glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio). Bidirectional interrelationships exist within and between these processes. Biomarkers were associated with frailty in varied strengths, and the causality remains unclear. In conclusion, frailty is related to multisystem physiological changes. Future research should examine the dynamic interactions among these processes to inform causality of frailty. Given the multifactorial nature of frailty, a composite index of multisystem biomarkers would likely be more informative than single biomarkers in early detection of frailty.

Abstract
PURPOSE Biomarkers as common data elements (CDEs) are important for the characterization of biobehavioral symptoms given that once a biologic moderator or mediator is identified, biologically based strategies can be investigated for treatment efforts. Just as a symptom inventory reflects a symptom experience, a biomarker is an indicator of the symptom, though not the symptom per se. The purposes of this position paper are to (a) identify a "minimum set" of biomarkers for consideration as CDEs in symptom and self-management science, specifically biochemical biomarkers; (b) evaluate the benefits and limitations of such a limited array of biomarkers with implications for symptom science; (c) propose a strategy for the collection of the endorsed minimum set of biologic samples to be employed as CDEs for symptom science; and (d) conceptualize this minimum set of biomarkers consistent with National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) symptoms of fatigue, depression, cognition, pain, and sleep disturbance. DESIGN AND METHODS From May 2016 through January 2017, a working group consisting of a subset of the Directors of the NINR Centers of Excellence funded by P20 or P30 mechanisms and NINR staff met bimonthly via telephone to develop this position paper suggesting the addition of biomarkers as CDEs. The full group of Directors reviewed drafts, provided critiques and suggestions, recommended the minimum set of biomarkers, and approved the completed document. Best practices for selecting, identifying, and using biological CDEs as well as challenges to the use of biological CDEs for symptom and self-management science are described. Current platforms for sample outcome sharing are presented. Finally, biological CDEs for symptom and self-management science are proposed along with implications for future research and use of CDEs in these areas. FINDINGS The recommended minimum set of biomarker CDEs include pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis marker, cortisol, the neuropeptide brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and DNA polymorphisms. CONCLUSIONS It is anticipated that this minimum set of biomarker CDEs will be refined as knowledge regarding biologic mechanisms underlying symptom and self-management science further develop. The incorporation of biological CDEs may provide insights into mechanisms of symptoms, effectiveness of proposed interventions, and applicability of chosen theoretical frameworks. Similarly, as for the previously suggested NINR CDEs for behavioral symptoms and self-management of chronic conditions, biological CDEs offer the potential for collaborative efforts that will strengthen symptom and self-management science. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of biomarker CDEs in biobehavioral symptoms research will facilitate the reproducibility and generalizability of research findings and benefit symptom and self-management science.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biomarkers can be used as prognostic, predictive, or monitoring indicators of an associated outcome. The purpose of this review was to provide a comprehensive summary of the research examining the use of biomarkers as surrogate end points for clinical outcomes in family caregivers for cancer patients, identify gaps, and make recommendations for future research. METHODS A scoping review, a process of mapping the existing literature, was conducted. Studies comparing biomarkers across caregivers and controls and/or examining relationships between biomarkers and psychological health were reviewed. RESULTS The studies ( N = 18) of caregivers for cancer patients who were identified used biomarkers to predict outcomes ( n = 13) and to monitor the efficacy of interventions ( n = 6). Biomarkers were divided into two categories based on physiological systems involved: (1) neuroendocrine function (sympathetic-adrenal-medullary axis activity, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity) and (2) immune function. Predictive biomarkers were sensitive to differences between caregivers and controls. The biomarkers were used to evaluate outcomes frequently associated with stress, depression, and anxiety. Cortisol was the biomarker most commonly measured to monitor the efficacy of interventions. DISCUSSION Biomarkers are most commonly incorporated into caregiver studies to predict group membership and psychological health. Neuroendocrine biomarkers, specifically cortisol, are most frequently assessed. Future research should include biomarkers of other physiologic functions (e.g., cardiovascular function, cognitive dysfunction, and cell aging) and those that serve as multisystem indicators. Expanding the scientific study of biomarkers will contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms through which stress may influence caregiver health.
