Uncensored EEG: The role of DC potentials in neurobiology of the brain

[Epileptic seizure and migraine attack: A revisit from the "Borderland of Epilepsy" to clinical implementation of infraslow activity/DC shifts in scalp EEG]

Migraine attacks, especially ones with aura, have symptoms similar to epileptic seizures, and the two may sometimes be difficult to differentiate clinically. However, the characteristic minute-by-minute symptom development and progress within 60 ‍min is useful for diagnosis. Although the details of its pathophysiology remain unsolved, cortical spreading depolarization (CSD) is one of the main pathogenetic factors. In epilepsy, clinical data have shown that ictal DC shifts could reflect impaired homeostasis of extracellular potassium by astrocyte dysfunction. Ictal DC shifts were found to be difficult to detect by scalp EEG, but can be clinically recorded from the seizure focus using wide-band EEG method. The similarity between DC shifts and CSD has been gaining attention from the neurophysiology point of view. The clinical implementation of infraslow activity/DC shifts analysis of scalp EEG is expected to elucidate further the pathophysiology of migraine, which may lie in the borderland of epilepsy.

Physiological paradigm for assessing reward prediction and extinction using cortical direct current potential responses in rats

Anticipating positive outcomes is a core cognitive function in the process of reward prediction. However, no neurophysiological method objectively assesses reward prediction in basic medical research. In the present study, we established a physiological paradigm using cortical direct current (DC) potential responses in rats to assess reward prediction. This paradigm consisted of five daily 1-h sessions with two tones, wherein the rewarded tone was followed by electrical stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) scheduled at 1000 ms later, whereas the unrewarded tone was not. On day 1, both tones induced a negative DC shift immediately after auditory responses, persisting up to MFB stimulation. This negative shift progressively increased and peaked on day 4. Starting from day 3, the negative shift from 600 to 1000 ms was significantly larger following the rewarded tone than that following the unrewarded tone. This negative DC shift was particularly prominent in the frontal cortex, suggesting its crucial role in discriminative reward prediction. During the extinction sessions, the shift diminished significantly on extinction day 1. These findings suggest that cortical DC potential is related to reward prediction and could be a valuable tool for evaluating animal models of depression, providing a testing system for anhedonia.

Modulation of Heart Rate Variability and Brain Excitability through Acute Whole-Body Vibration: The Role of Frequency

This cross-over study aimed to explore effects of acute whole-body vibration (WBV) at frequencies of 5-35 Hz on heart rate variability and brain excitability. Thirteen healthy physically active college students randomly completed eight interventions under the following conditions: static upright standing without vibration (CON), static squat exercise (knee flexion 150°) on the vibration platform (SSE), and static squat exercise (knee flexion 150°) combined with WBV at vibration frequency of 5, 9, 13, 20, 25, and 35 Hz. Five bouts × 30 s with a 30-s rest interval were performed for all interventions. The brain's direct current potentials (DCPs), frequency domain variables (FDV) including normalized low frequency power (nLF), normalized high frequency power (nHF) and the ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF), along with the mean heart rate (MHR) were collected and calculated before and after the WBV intervention. Results suggested that WBV frequency at 5 Hz had a substantial effect on decreasing DCPs [-2.13 μV, t(84) = -3.82, p < 0.05, g = -1.03, large] and nLF [-13%, t(84) = -2.31, p = 0.04, g = -0.62, medium]. By contrast, 20-35 Hz of acute WBV intervention considerably improved DCPs [7.58 μV, t(84) = 4.31, p < 0.05, g = 1.16, large], nLF [17%, t(84) = 2.92, p < 0.05, g = 0.79, large] and the LF/HF [0.51, t(84) = 2.86, p < 0.05, g = 0.77, large]. A strong (r = 0.7, p < 0.01) correlation between DCPs and nLF was found at 5 Hz. In summary, acute WBV at 20-35 Hz principally activated the sympathetic nervous system and increased brain excitability, while 5-Hz WBV activated the parasympathetic nervous system and reduced brain excitability. The frequency spectrum of WBV might be manipulated according to the intervention target on heart rate variability and brain excitability.

Detection of spreading depression features from the scalp of epileptic patients

Spreading depression (SD), a pathological cortical negative DC potential, is caused by an elevation of potassium ions in the extracellular space. This leads to a transient relocation of ions within neurons and a slow spread through brain tissue. Our previous research established a correlation between scalp SD and seizures in patients with intractable epilepsy using our novel electroencephalography (EEG). In this study, we enhanced our EEG system by incorporating a Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) module for multi-modal EEG-NIRS measurements. The aim is to provide an investigation into the defining characteristics and methods for detecting SD.Clinical Relevance-: The detection of SD serves as a novel biomarker for epilepsy, capable of forewarning seizures within a time range from 10 secs to 30 min. This detection plays a crucial role in predicting and preventing seizures and providing diagnostic information for drug-resistant epilepsy patients.

Concurrent recordings of slow DC-potentials and epileptiform discharges: novel EEG amplifier and signal processing techniques

Ionic currents within the brain generate voltage oscillations consist of slow and rapid fluctuations. These bioelectrical activities include ultra-low frequency electroencephalograms (DC-EEG, frequency less than 0.1Hz) and conventional clinical electroencephalograms (AC-EEG, 0.5 to 70Hz). Although AC-EEG is commonly used for diagnosing epilepsy, recent studies indicate that DC-EEG is an essential frequency component of EEG and can provide valuable information for analyzing epileptiform discharges. During conventional EEG recordings, DC-EEG is censored by applying high-pass filtering to i) obliterate slow-wave artifacts, ii) eliminate the bioelectrodes' half-cell potential asymmetrical changes in ultralow-low frequency, and iii) prevent instrument saturation. Spreading depression (SD), which is the most prolonged fluctuation in DC-EEG, may be associated with epileptiform discharges. However, recording of SD signals from the scalp's surface can be challenging due to the filtering effect and non-neuronal slow shift potentials. In this study, we describe a novel technique to extend the frequency bandwidth of surface EEG to record SD signals. The method includes novel instrumentation, appropriate bioelectrodes, and efficient signal-processing techniques. To evaluate the accuracy of our approach, we performed a simultaneous surface recording of DC- and AC-EEG from epileptic patients during long-term video EEG monitoring, which provide a promising tool for diagnosis of epilepsy. Cerebral multimodality monitoring in adult neurocritical care patients with acute brain injury: A narrative review

Cerebral multimodality monitoring (MMM) is, even with a general lack of Class I evidence, increasingly recognized as a tool to support clinical decision-making in the neuroscience intensive care unit (NICU). However, literature and guidelines have focused on unimodal signals in a specific form of acute brain injury. Integrating unimodal signals in multiple signal monitoring is the next step for clinical studies and patient care. As such, we aimed to investigate the recent application of MMM in studies of adult patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), acute ischemic stroke (AIS), and hypoxic ischemic brain injury following cardiac arrest (HIBI). We identified continuous or daily updated monitoring modalities and summarized the monitoring setting, study setting, and clinical characteristics. In addition, we discussed clinical outcome in intervention studies. We identified 112 MMM studies, including 11 modalities, over the last 7 years (2015-2022). Fifty-eight studies (52%) applied only two modalities. Most frequently combined were ICP monitoring (92 studies (82%)) together with PbtO₂ (63 studies (56%). Most studies included patients with TBI (59 studies) or SAH (53 studies). The enrollment period of 34 studies (30%) took more than 5 years, whereas the median sample size was only 36 patients (q1- q3, 20-74). We classified studies as either observational (68 studies) or interventional (44 studies). The interventions were subclassified as systemic (24 studies), cerebral (10 studies), and interventions guided by MMM (11 studies). We identified 20 different systemic or cerebral interventions. Nine (9/11, 82%) of the MMM-guided studies included clinical outcome as an endpoint. In 78% (7/9) of these MMM-guided intervention studies, a significant improvement in outcome was demonstrated in favor of interventions guided by MMM. Clinical outcome may be improved with interventions guided by MMM. This strengthens the belief in this application, but further interdisciplinary collaborations are needed to overcome the heterogeneity, as illustrated in the present review. Future research should focus on increasing sample sizes, improved data collection, refining definitions of secondary injuries, and standardized interventions. Only then can we proceed with complex outcome studies with MMM-guided treatment.

Evaluating the relationship between neurological function, neuromuscular fatigue, and subjective performance measures in professional rugby union players

Managing the health and wellbeing of full-time professional athletes is a multifaceted task. In elite high-performance environments, medical staff and strength training coaches attempt to identify improved methods to monitor player health. Monitoring player health could indicate potential injury risk and assist in adjustments to training and workload management. Measuring fatigue is a notable component of monitoring player readiness before and after training sessions, and after competitive fixtures. In the present study, a novel method of gathering non-invasive player data was investigated by utilizing the Omegawave (OW) to monitor direct current (DC) potential brainwave activity. This method allowed for non-invasive data gathering to assess recovery, player readiness and indicators of workload that may affect optimal performance. DC potential is based on recording low electrical frequencies (&gt;0.5 Hz) that is derived from (1) Stabilization point of DC potential (mV), (2) Stabilization time (1.0–7.0) and (3) Curve shape (1.0–7.0). These measures evaluate the athlete's internal stress, readiness to perform, and neurological function through DC potential brain wave activity and heart rate variability (HRV) assessments. The primary aim of this case series was to compare the efficacy of objective DC potential brainwave activity measurements (neurological function) with neuromuscular fatigue data using reactive strength index modified (RSImod) and profile of mood states (POMS) questionnaires to assess a player's state of readiness to train. The participants in this study were eleven male senior professional rugby union players with a mean stature (±SD) of 185.2 ± 8.6 cm, mass of 101.1 ± 12.9 kg, and age of 27.1 ± 2.1 years. All players were tested 3 days per week over a 6-week mid-season period. Results from this case study suggest that DC potentials could be used as an objective measure to indicate player readiness and managing individual player workload. The final analyses identified a weak negative correlation (r = −0.17) between the RSImod data and the DC potential data was observed. DC potential brainwave activity data could be used in conjunction with subjective measures such as POMS, RSImod and reported injury status to adjust player daily activity.

Therapeutic role of yoga in neuropsychological disorders

Yoga is considered a widely-used approach for health conservation and can be adopted as a treatment modality for a plethora of medical conditions, including neurological and psychological disorders. Hence, we reviewed relevant articles entailing various neurological and psychological disorders and gathered data on how yoga exerts positive impacts on patients with a diverse range of disorders, including its modulatory effects on brain bioelectrical activities, neurotransmitters, and synaptic plasticity. The role of yoga practice as an element of the treatment of several neuropsychological diseases was evaluated based on these findings.

Full-Band EEG Recordings Using Hybrid AC/DC-Divider Filters

Full-band DC recordings enable recording of slow electrical brain signals that are severely compromised during conventional AC recordings. However, full-band DC recordings may be limited by the amplifier's dynamic input range and the loss of small amplitude high-frequency signals. Recently, Neuralynx has proposed full-band recordings with inverse filtering for signal reconstruction based on hybrid AC/DC-divider RRC filters that enable only partial suppression of DC signals. However, the quality of signal reconstruction for biological signals has not yet been assessed. Here, we propose a novel digital inverse filter based on a mathematical model describing RRC filter properties, which provides high computational accuracy and versatility. Second, we propose procedures for the evaluation of the inverse filter coefficients, adapted for each recording channel to minimize the error caused by the deviation of the real values of the RRC filter elements from their nominal values. We demonstrate that this approach enables near 99% reconstruction quality of high-potassium-induced cortical spreading depolarizations (SDs), endothelin-induced ischemic negative ultraslow potentials (NUPs), and whole-cell recordings of membrane potential using RRC filters. The quality of the reconstruction was significantly higher than with the existing inverse filtering procedures. Thus, RRC filters with inverse filtering are optimal for full-band EEG recordings in various applications.

An electrodiffusive neuron-extracellular-glia model for exploring the genesis of slow potentials in the brain

Within the computational neuroscience community, there has been a focus on simulating the electrical activity of neurons, while other components of brain tissue, such as glia cells and the extracellular space, are often neglected. Standard models of extracellular potentials are based on a combination of multicompartmental models describing neural electrodynamics and volume conductor theory. Such models cannot be used to simulate the slow components of extracellular potentials, which depend on ion concentration dynamics, and the effect that this has on extracellular diffusion potentials and glial buffering currents. We here present the electrodiffusive neuron-extracellular-glia (edNEG) model, which we believe is the first model to combine compartmental neuron modeling with an electrodiffusive framework for intra- and extracellular ion concentration dynamics in a local piece of neuro-glial brain tissue. The edNEG model (i) keeps track of all intraneuronal, intraglial, and extracellular ion concentrations and electrical potentials, (ii) accounts for action potentials and dendritic calcium spikes in neurons, (iii) contains a neuronal and glial homeostatic machinery that gives physiologically realistic ion concentration dynamics, (iv) accounts for electrodiffusive transmembrane, intracellular, and extracellular ionic movements, and (v) accounts for glial and neuronal swelling caused by osmotic transmembrane pressure gradients. The edNEG model accounts for the concentration-dependent effects on ECS potentials that the standard models neglect. Using the edNEG model, we analyze these effects by splitting the extracellular potential into three components: one due to neural sink/source configurations, one due to glial sink/source configurations, and one due to extracellular diffusive currents. Through a series of simulations, we analyze the roles played by the various components and how they interact in generating the total slow potential. We conclude that the three components are of comparable magnitude and that the stimulus conditions determine which of the components that dominate.

Auditory cortex supports verbal working memory capacity

Working memory (WM) is a fundamental construct of human cognition. The neural basis of auditory WM is thought to reflect a distributed brain network consisting of canonical memory and central executive brain regions including frontal lobe and hippocampus. Yet, the role of auditory (sensory) cortex in supporting active memory representations remains controversial. Here, we recorded neuroelectric activity via electroencephalogram as listeners actively performed an auditory version of the Sternberg memory task. Memory load was taxed by parametrically manipulating the number of auditory tokens (letter sounds) held in memory. Source analysis of scalp potentials showed that sustained neural activity maintained in auditory cortex (AC) prior to memory retrieval closely scaled with behavioral performance. Brain-behavior correlations revealed that lateralized modulations in left (but not right) AC were predictive of individual differences in auditory WM capacity. Our findings confirm a prominent role of AC, traditionally viewed as a sensory-perceptual processor, in actively maintaining memory traces and dictating individual differences in behavioral WM limits.

Graphene active sensor arrays for long-term and wireless mapping of wide frequency band epicortical brain activity

Graphene active sensors have demonstrated promising capabilities for the detection of electrophysiological signals in the brain. Their functional properties, together with their flexibility as well as their expected stability and biocompatibility have raised them as a promising building block for large-scale sensing neural interfaces. However, in order to provide reliable tools for neuroscience and biomedical engineering applications, the maturity of this technology must be thoroughly studied. Here, we evaluate the performance of 64-channel graphene sensor arrays in terms of homogeneity, sensitivity and stability using a wireless, quasi-commercial headstage and demonstrate the biocompatibility of epicortical graphene chronic implants. Furthermore, to illustrate the potential of the technology to detect cortical signals from infra-slow to high-gamma frequency bands, we perform proof-of-concept long-term wireless recording in a freely behaving rodent. Our work demonstrates the maturity of the graphene-based technology, which represents a promising candidate for chronic, wide frequency band neural sensing interfaces.

Novel Electrode Designs for Neurostimulation in Regenerative Medicine: Activation of Stem Cells

Neural stem and progenitor cells (i.e., neural precursors) are found within specific regions in the central nervous system and have great regenerative capacity. These cells are electrosensitive and their behavior can be regulated by the presence of electric fields (EFs). Electrical stimulation is currently used to treat neurological disorders in a clinical setting. Herein we propose that electrical stimulation can be used to enhance neural repair by regulating neural precursor cell (NPC) kinetics and promoting their migration to sites of injury or disease. We discuss how intrinsic and extrinsic factors can affect NPC migration in the presence of an EF and how this impacts electrode design with the goal of enhancing tissue regeneration. We conclude with an outlook on future clinical applications of electrical stimulation and highlight technological advances that would greatly support these applications.

Association of cortical spreading depression and seizures in patients with medically intractable epilepsy

OBJECTIVE

Monitoring of the ultra-low frequency potentials, particularly cortical spreading depression (CSD), is excluded in epilepsy monitoring due to technical barriers imposed by the scalp ultra-low frequency electroencephalogram (EEG). As a result, clinical studies of CSD have been limited to invasive EEG. Therefore, the occurrence of CSD and its interaction with epileptiform field potentials (EFP) require investigation in epilepsy monitoring.

METHODS

Using a novel AC/DC-EEG approach, the occurrence of DC potentials in patients with intractable epilepsy presenting different symptoms of aura was investigated during long-term video-EEG monitoring.

RESULTS

Various forms of slow potentials, including simultaneous negative direct current (DC) potentials and prolonged EFP, propagated negative DC potentials, and non-propagated single negative DC potentials were recorded from the scalp of the epileptic patients. The propagated and single negative DC potentials preceded the prolonged EFP with a time lag and seizure appeared at the final shoulder of some instances of the propagated negative DC potentials. The slow potential deflections had a high amplitude and prolonged duration and propagated slowly through the brain. The high-frequency EEG was suppressed in the vicinity of the negative DC potential propagations.

CONCLUSIONS

The study is the first to report the recording of the propagated and single negative DC potentials with EFP at the scalp of patients with intractable epilepsy. The negative DC potentials preceded the prolonged EFP and may trigger seizures. The propagated and single negative DC potentials may be considered as CSD.

SIGNIFICANCE

Recordings of CSD may serve as diagnostic and prognostic monitoring tools in epilepsy.

Spreading Depolarization Facilitates the Transition of Neuronal Burst Firing from Interictal to Ictal State

The transition of neuronal burst firing from the interictal to ictal state contributes to seizure initiation in human temporal lobe epilepsy. The low-Mg²⁺ model of seizure is characterized by initial spontaneous interictal bursting events, which later developed into ictaform discharges. Both experimental and clinical studies point to a complex link between spreading depolarization (SD) and epileptiform field potentials (EFP), including SD-induced epileptic seizures. To investigate the mechanism of SD and EFP interactions, the effect of SD on the transition of interictal to ictal state in low-Mg²⁺ model of seizure was studied in the rat hippocampus in vitro. After the appearance of interictal activities, SD was elicited by local application of KCl. SD significantly increased the amplitude and duration of action potentials and after-hyperpolarization, and hyperpolarized the membrane potential. Furthermore, SD significantly increased the duration of interictal activities and the threshold potentials of interictal activities. In addition, SD significantly accelerated the transition from interictal to ictal state compared to the control tissues. Ictal activities after induction of SD exhibited a significantly longer duration. This study revealed that SD accelerates interictal-to-ictal transitions and facilitates development of ictaform discharges, possibly via the enhancement of neural synchronization, and points to the potential role of SD in seizure initiation.

Validity, Reliability, and Sensitivity to Exercise-Induced Fatigue of a Customer-Friendly Device for the Measurement of the Brain's Direct Current Potential

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2020-This study aimed to determine the validity, reliability, and sensitivity to exercise-induced fatigue of the brain's direct current (DC) potential measured with a commercially available and customer-friendly electroencephalography (EEG) device and Omegawave (OW). The study was composed of 3 different experiments as follows: (a) we compared the DC potential values obtained simultaneously in 31 subjects with both OW and a research-quality EEG system; (b) 3 consecutive DC potential measurements with OW were taken at rest on the same day in 25 subjects for reliability analyses; and (c) sensitivity to fatigue was assessed in 9 elite badminton players through the measurement of the DC potential with OW-as well as other fatigue-related measures (e.g., Hooper's index, heart rate variability, jump ability, and simple and complex reaction times)-24 hours after both a day of rest and of strenuous exercise, which were performed in a crossover and randomized design. The DC potential measured with OW was reliable (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.97) and significantly correlated to that of EEG (r = 0.55, p = 0.001), although significant differences were observed between systems (p < 0.001). Compared with the rest day, strenuous exercise resulted in an impaired Hooper's index (p = 0.010) and jump ability (p = 0.008), longer simple (p = 0.038) and complex reaction times (p = 0.011), and a trend toward sympathetic dominance (standard deviation of normal to normal R-R intervals, p = 0.042; root mean square of differences between consecutive R-R intervals, p = 0.068). In turn, no significant differences were found between sessions for the DC potential (p = 0.173). In summary, the DC potential measured with OW was reliable and modestly correlated to that measured with EEG, but no differences were observed in response to the delayed fatigue (after 24 hours) elicited by strenuous exercise in elite athletes.

The role of Toll-like receptor signaling pathways in cerebrovascular disorders: the impact of spreading depolarization

Cerebral vascular diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders that affect the blood supply to the brain and lead to the reduction of oxygen and glucose supply to the neurons and the supporting cells. Spreading depolarization (SD), a propagating wave of neuroglial depolarization, occurs in different CVDs. A growing amount of evidence suggests that the inflammatory responses following hypoxic-ischemic insults and after SD plays a double-edged role in brain tissue injury and clinical outcome; a beneficial effect in the acute phase and a destructive role in the late phase. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a crucial role in the activation of inflammatory cascades and subsequent neuroprotective or harmful effects after CVDs and SD. Here, we review current data regarding the pathophysiological role of TLR signaling pathways in different CVDs and discuss the role of SD in the potentiation of the inflammatory cascade in CVDs through the modulation of TLRs.

Identifying neuronal correlates of dying and resuscitation in a model of reversible brain anoxia

We developed a new rodent model of reversible brain anoxia and performed continuous electrocorticographic (ECoG) and intracellular recordings of neocortical neurons to identify in real-time the cellular and network dynamics that successively emerge throughout the dying-to-recovery process. Along with a global decrease in ECoG amplitude, deprivation of oxygen supply resulted in an early surge of beta-gamma activities, accompanied by rhythmic membrane depolarizations and regular firing in pyramidal neurons. ECoG and intracellular signals were then dominated by low-frequency activities which progressively declined towards isoelectric levels. Cortical neurons during the isoelectric state underwent a massive membrane potential depolarizing shift, captured in the ECoG as a large amplitude triphasic wave known as the "wave-of-death" (WoD). This neuronal anoxic depolarization, associated with a block of action potentials and a loss of cell integrative properties, could however be reversed if brain re-oxygenation was rapidly restored (within 2-3.5 min). The subsequent slow repolarization of neocortical neurons resulted in a second identifiable ECoG wave we termed "wave-of-resuscitation" since it inaugurated the progressive regaining of pre-anoxic synaptic and firing activities. These results demonstrate that the WoD is not a biomarker of an irremediable death and unveil the cellular correlates of a novel ECoG wave that may be predictive of a successful recovery. The identification of real-time biomarkers of onset and termination of cell anoxic insult could benefit research on interventional strategies to optimize resuscitation procedures.

High-resolution mapping of infraslow cortical brain activity enabled by graphene microtransistors

Recording infraslow brain signals (<0.1 Hz) with microelectrodes is severely hampered by current microelectrode materials, primarily due to limitations resulting from voltage drift and high electrode impedance. Hence, most recording systems include high-pass filters that solve saturation issues but come hand in hand with loss of physiological and pathological information. In this work, we use flexible epicortical and intracortical arrays of graphene solution-gated field-effect transistors (gSGFETs) to map cortical spreading depression in rats and demonstrate that gSGFETs are able to record, with high fidelity, infraslow signals together with signals in the typical local field potential bandwidth. The wide recording bandwidth results from the direct field-effect coupling of the active transistor, in contrast to standard passive electrodes, as well as from the electrochemical inertness of graphene. Taking advantage of such functionality, we envision broad applications of gSGFET technology for monitoring infraslow brain activity both in research and in the clinic.

Enhancement of Mood but not Performance in Elite Athletes With Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation

PURPOSE

To determine if transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) could be effective for the enhancement of swimming performance or mood state in elite athletes.

METHODS

Eight male elite triathletes (age = 20 [2] y, maximal oxygen uptake = 71 [4] mL·kg^-1·min^-1) participated in this crossover, counterbalanced, sham-controlled, double-blind study. Participants received either actual (20 min of anodal stimulation of the motor cortex at 2 mA) or sham tDCS and performed an 800-m swimming test in which rating of perceived exertion and blood lactate response were measured. Mood state (Brunel Mood Scale) was assessed before and after each tDCS session and after the swimming test. Heart-rate variability and central nervous system readiness were assessed before and after each tDCS session. The chances of finding differences between conditions were determined using magnitude-based inferences.

RESULTS

A significant and very likely higher Brunel Mood Scale-determined vigor self-perception was found with actual tDCS after the stimulation session (-0.1 [1.2] and 2.0 [2.3] for sham and actual tDCS, respectively; P = .018, effect size = 1.14) and after exercise (-4.1 [2.9] and -0.9 [3.6] for sham and actual tDCS, respectively; P = .022, effect size = 0.98). However, likely trivial and nonsignificant (P > .05) differences were found between conditions in performance (599 [38] s and 596 [39] s, respectively). Unclear and nonsignificant differences were observed between conditions for the rest of the study end points.

CONCLUSIONS

tDCS elicited a marked increase in vigor self-perception that was maintained after exercise but failed to improve swimming performance in elite triathletes.
