Overview of accelerated aging and polymer degradation kinetics for combined radiation-thermal environments

Predicting Long-Time-Scale Kinetics under Variable Experimental Conditions with Kinetica.jl

Predicting the degradation processes of molecules over long time scales is a key aspect of industrial materials design. However, it is made computationally challenging by the need to construct large networks of chemical reactions that are relevant to the experimental conditions that kinetic models must mirror, with every reaction requiring accurate kinetic data. Here, we showcase Kinetica.jl, a new software package for constructing large-scale chemical reaction networks in a fully automated fashion by exploring chemical reaction space with a kinetics-driven algorithm; coupled to efficient machine-learning models of activation energies for sampled elementary reactions, we show how this approach readily enables generation and kinetic characterization of networks containing ∼103 chemical species and ≃104-105 reactions. Symbolic-numeric modeling of the generated reaction networks is used to allow for flexible, efficient computation of kinetic profiles under experimentally realizable conditions such as continuously variable temperature regimes, enabling direct connection between bottom-up reaction networks and experimental observations. Highly efficient propagation of long-time-scale kinetic profiles is required for automated reaction network refinement and is enabled here by a new discrete kinetic approximation. The resulting Kinetica.jl simulation package therefore enables automated generation, characterization, and long-time-scale modeling of complex chemical reaction systems. We demonstrate this for hydrocarbon pyrolysis simulated over time scales of seconds, using transient temperature profiles representing those of tubular flow reactor experiments.

The Aging of Polymers under Electromagnetic Radiation

Polymeric materials degrade as they react with environmental conditions such as temperature, light, and humidity. Electromagnetic radiation from the Sun's ultraviolet rays weakens the mechanical properties of polymers, causing them to degrade. This study examined the phenomenon of polymer aging due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The study examined three specific objectives, including the key theories explaining ultraviolet (UV) radiation's impact on polymer decomposition, the underlying testing procedures for determining the aging properties of polymeric materials, and appraising the current technical methods for enhancing the UV resistance of polymers. The study utilized a literature review methodology to understand the aging effect of electromagnetic radiation on polymers. Thus, the study concluded that using additives and UV absorbers on polymers and polymer composites can elongate the lifespan of polymers by shielding them from the aging effects of UV radiation. The findings from the study suggest that thermal conditions contribute to polymer degradation by breaking down their physical and chemical bonds. Thermal oxidative environments accelerate aging due to the presence of UV radiation and temperatures that foster a quicker degradation of plastics.

Microplastic pollution in terrestrial ecosystems: Global implications and sustainable solutions

Microplastic (MPs) pollution has become a global environmental concern with significant impacts on ecosystems and human health. Although MPs have been widely detected in aquatic environments, their presence in terrestrial ecosystems remains largely unexplored. This review examines the multifaceted issues of MPs pollution in terrestrial ecosystem, covering various aspects from additives in plastics to global legislation and sustainable solutions. The study explores the widespread distribution of MPs worldwide and their potential antagonistic interactions with co-occurring contaminants, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of their environmental implications. The influence of MPs on soil and plants is discussed, shedding light on the potential consequences for terrestrial ecosystems and agricultural productivity. The aging mechanisms of MPs, including photo and thermal aging, are elucidated, along with the factors influencing their aging process. Furthermore, the review provides an overview of global legislation addressing plastic waste, including bans on specific plastic items and levies on single-use plastics. Sustainable solutions for MPs pollution are proposed, encompassing upstream approaches such as bioplastics, improved waste management practices, and wastewater treatment technologies, as well as downstream methods like physical and biological removal of MPs. The importance of international collaboration, comprehensive legislation, and global agreements is underscored as crucial in tackling this pervasive environmental challenge. This review may serve as a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders, providing a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact and potential risks associated with MPs.

Synergistic effects of atomic oxygen and thermal cycling in low earth orbit on polymer-matrixed space material

Polymer-matrixed materials are widely used in the spacecrafts' structures. However, crafts located in the LEO（Low Earth Orbit） would suffer from hazardous environment factors when orbiting in the space. It has been reported that the space environment factors' integral effect (which represents the factual detriment in space) is not equivalent to the simple summation of each individual. Hence, atomic oxygen and thermal cycling were selected as the starting point for studying the typical LEO synergistic effects on polymer-matrixed space material. In this work, methods such as surface morphology observation, surface components analyzation and inter-laminar-shear strength test were embraced to gather the basic information for the study of degradation. As a result, focusing on the composites selected in this work, synergistic effects do exist between the two factors (AO&TC, representing for atomic oxygen and thermal cycling combined). Besides, a quantified index was proposed to represent synergistic characteristics，so as to lay the foundation for the scientific evolution of material characterization.

Aging behavior of microplastics accelerated by mechanical fragmentation: alteration of intrinsic and extrinsic properties

Microplastics (MPs) inevitably undergo multiple aging processes during their life cycle in the environment. However, the information regarding the mechanical fragmentation behavior of MPs remained unclear, including the changes in the intrinsic properties of aged MPs, the measurement of aging degree, the underlying mechanism, and the interaction with heavy metals. Here, MPs (PS, PP, PET) were aged by crushing (-CR) and ball-milling (-BM) to simulate mild and severe mechanical fragmentation, respectively. Our results indicated that mechanical fragmentation significantly affected the morphology of MPs. The aging degree of MP-BM was deeper compared to MP-CR owing to smaller particle size, larger specific surface area, poorer heat resistance, better hydrophilicity, and richer oxygen-containing functional groups. The carbonyl index (CI) and O/C ratio were used to measure the aging degree of the two mechanical aging treatments. Besides, the mechanism was proposed and the discrepancy between the two treatments was elaborated from three aspects including the excitation energy source, reaction interface, and reaction dynamics. Furthermore, the extrinsic properties of MPs altered with the increase of aging degree; specifically, the adsorption capacities of heavy metals were enhanced. Meanwhile, it was unveiled that the CI value and O/C ratio played a vital role in estimating the adsorption ability of heavy metals. The findings not only reveal the mechanical fragmentation behavior of MPs but also provide new insights into the assessment of the potential risks of the aged MPs via chemical indexes.

Recycling of Plastics from E-Waste via Photodegradation in a Low-Pressure Reactor: The Case of Decabromodiphenyl Ether Dispersed in Poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) and Poly(carbonate)

Recycling of plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), containing brominated flame retardants (BFR) remains difficult due to the increasingly stringent regulations on their handling and recovery. This report deals with photodegradation in a low-pressure reactor applying UV-visible light on Decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDE or BDE-209) randomly dispersed in commercially available Poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and Poly(carbonate) (PC). The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of decomposing a BFR in plastic waste from EEE while maintaining the specifications of the polymeric materials in order to allow for their recycling. The photodegradation of the extracted BFR was monitored using infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy. DBDE underwent rapid photodegradation during the first minutes of exposure to UV-visible light and reached degradation yields superior to 90% after 15 min of irradiation. The evaluation of polymer properties (ABS and PC) after irradiation revealed superficial crosslinking effects, which were slightly accelerated in the presence of DBDE. However, the use of a low-pressure reactor avoids large photooxidation and allowed to maintain the thermal and structural properties of the virgin polymers.

The Variety of the Stress–strain Response of Silicone Foam after Aging

The mechanical properties of silicone foam will degrade when exposed to environmental loads such as temperature and pressure for a long time. In recent years, the variation law of the stress–strain response of silicone foam during the aging process has received more and more attention, but there are few works that quantitatively analyze the variation of the stress–strain response. In this work, we quantitatively analyzed the variation law of the stress–strain response of silicone foam during aging by the constitutive model. Firstly, the accelerated aging test of silicone rubber foam under long-term compressive strain was carried out, and its compression set, stress relaxation and strain stress curves of different aging degrees were obtained. Further, degenerate trajectory equations for the compression set and stress–relaxation were obtained. In addition, the hyper-foam constitutive model was obtained by fitting stress–strain curves, and the changes in the model parameters after aging were studied. The results show that the compressed set and stress–relaxation are exponential functions of time, while different to existing research findings, we found that the stress–strain curves do not change monotonically with increasing time, which first softens, then hardens, and finally softens. Additionally, to better understand the changing trend of the stress–strain response, the correlation between the stress–strain curve and the compression set and stress–relaxation was discussed qualitatively. Finally, in the stage of monotonic change of the stress–strain curve, the exponential function of the model parameters with the increase of aging time was obtained.

Multiscale Strategy for Predicting Radiation Chemistry in Polymers

A primary mode for radiation damage in polymers arises from ballistic electrons that induce electronic excitations, yet subsequent chemical mechanisms are poorly understood. We develop a multiscale strategy to predict this chemistry starting from subatomic scattering calculations. Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations sample initial bond-breaking events following the most likely excitations, which feed into semiempirical simulations that approach chemical equilibrium. Application to polyethylene reveals a mechanism explaining the low propensity to cross-link in crystalline samples.

Analytical and Numerical Modeling of Degradation and Pyrolysis of Polyethylene: Measuring Aging with Thermogravimetry

Aging reactions due to heat and radiation cause chain scissions and cross-linking in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). We have developed theoretical and numerical graph models to study the evolution of the gel fraction and network properties during aging as well as the mass loss during thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Our analytical and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) based models that combine degradation reactions and a simple vaporization model can quantitatively predict TGA curves for aged XLPE. Fitting the model to experimental TGA data yields the number of scission reactions, showing that thermogravimetry combined with our models can present a nondestructive aging characterization tool for lifetime prediction.

On the Use of Oxidation Induction Time as a Kinetic Parameter for Condition Monitoring and Lifetime Evaluation under Ionizing Radiation Environments

The durability of polymeric materials is closely linked to their degradation under specific operating conditions when different stressors-general or specific, such as high temperature, sunlight or ionizing radiation, solvents, or mechanical stresses-act simultaneously, causing degradation. In the case of electrical cables, the durability of the electrically insulating materials used in their construction is an important parameter to ensure their operational security. In this work, we studied the degradation state of various types of electrical insulating materials from cables used in particle acceleration systems under European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) conditions (e.g., Super Proton Synchrotron, SPS) as a function of time and irradiation dose. A simple kinetic model was proposed based on the exponential decrease in the antioxidant amount in polymeric insulations. The onset oxidation time (OIT) values, used as an indicator of antioxidant concentration, were obtained from isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and chemiluminescence (CL) measurements. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements were used to assess the degradation state and identify polymeric materials. The practical applicability of such a model in diagnosing degradation and in the subsequent evaluation of the remaining service life is of interest, as it can be adapted to a broad range of operating conditions and materials.

Biodegradation of polyethylene and polystyrene: From microbial deterioration to enzyme discovery

The global production of plastics has continuously been soaring over the last decades due to their extensive use in our daily life and in industries. Although synthetic plastics offer great advantages from packaging to construction and electronics, their low biodegradability induce serious plastic pollution that damage the environment, human health and make irreversible changes in the ecological cycle. In particular, plastics containing only carbon-carbon (C-C) backbone are less susceptible to degradation due to the lack of hydrolysable groups. The representative polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) account for about 40% of the total plastic production. Various chemical and biological processes with great potential have been developed for plastic recycle and reuse, but biodegradation seems to be the most attractive and eco-friendly method to combat this growing environmental problem. In this review, we first summarize the current advances in PE and PS biodegradation, including isolation of microbes and potential degrading enzymes from different sources. Next, the state-of-the-art techniques used for evaluating and monitoring PE and PS degradation, the scientific toolboxes for enzyme discovery as well as the challenges and strategies for plastic biodegradation are intensively discussed. In return, it inspires a further technological exploration in expanding the diversity of species and enzymes, disclosing the essential pathways and developing new approaches to utilize plastic waste as feedstock for recycling and upcycling.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of Gamma Radiolysis and Dose Rate Effect of o-Cresol Formaldehyde Epoxy Composites

Gamma radiolysis behaviors and mechanisms of silica-filled o-cresol formaldehyde epoxy are studied at 2.20 × 10^-5 to 1.95 × 10^-1 Gy/s. The radiolysis-induced changes in chemical structures do not severely affect its thermostability. The slightly deteriorated mechanical strength at temperature exceeding 100 °C is accompanied by the declining glass transition temperature (from 185.9 to 172.2 °C) and enhanced damping ability. The gas yields of hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide manifest a remarkable dose rate effect. Based on the Schwarzschild law, their yields at an extremely low dose rate are accurately predicted by the established master curves. Besides, the latent radiolysis of gas products and postradiation effect are found with caution. The radiation-caused residual spin species are proved to be composed of silica defects and a phenoxy-type free radical with a tert-butyl group, according to the experimental results, theoretical calculations, and spectra simulations. The lower vertical ionization potential (7.6 eV) and adiabatic ionization potential (7.1 eV) are primarily due to the ionization of the benzene ring moiety with the tert-butyl group, which is likely to suffer from radiolysis. The calculated bond dissociation energy (260.8-563.5 kJ/mol) of the typical chemical bonds of epoxy is consistent with its radiolytic vulnerability and degradation mechanisms.

Molecule Dynamics Simulation of the Effect of Oxidative Aging on Properties of Nitrile Rubber

The effects of oxidative aging on the static and dynamic properties of nitrile rubber at the molecular scale were investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The aged nitrile rubber models were constructed by introducing hydroxyl groups and carbonyl groups into rubber molecular chains to mimic oxidative aging. The static and dynamic properties of the unaged and aged nitrile rubber under different conditions were evaluated by mean square displacement, self-diffusion coefficients, hydrogen bond, fractional free volume, radial distribution function, cohesive energy density and solubility parameter. The results show that the elevated temperature intensified significantly the mobility of rubber molecular chains and fractional free volume, while the compressive strain displayed the opposite effect resulting in packing and rearrangement of rubber chains. The introduction of hydroxyl groups and carbonyl groups enhanced the polarity, intermolecular interactions, the volume and rigidity of molecular chains, implying weaker mobility of molecular chains as compared to unaged models. The compressive strain and oxidative aging both decreased the fractional free volume, which inhibited gaseous and liquid diffusion into the rubber materials, and slowed down the oxidative aging rate. This study provides insights to better understand the effect of molecular changes due to oxidative aging on the structural and dynamic properties of rubber materials at the molecular level.

Microplastics in the soil-groundwater environment: Aging, migration, and co-transport of contaminants - A critical review

Microplastic contamination in soil has received increasing attention since excessive plastic debris has been emitted directly into the terrestrial environment. Once released into the terrestrial environment, microplastics can be aged via photo- and thermally-initiated oxidative degradation, hetero-aggregation, and bioturbation. Aging affects the physiochemical properties of microplastics with the increase of surface roughness and oxygen-containing groups, which could enhance the sorption and mobility of microplastics in the soil and groundwater environment. However, the interactions among aging, sorption, and transport of microplastics in the terrestrial system have not been unveiled. This review clarifies the key processes of microplastics transport pathways in soil and groundwater ecosystems influenced by aging and sorption under various scenarios. Co-transport of microplastics and sorbed contaminants are also addressed to help understand the risks associated with heavy metals, organic contaminants, and engineered nanoparticles in the soil environment. Overall, this review elaborates the most pressing research limitations on the present literature and highlights the future perspectives to investigate the possible broad transport pathways of microplastics in soil.

Long-Term Thermal Aging of Modified Sylgard 184 Formulations

Primarily used as an encapsulant and soft adhesive, Sylgard 184 is an engineered, high-performance silicone polymer that has applications spanning microfluidics, microelectromechanical systems, mechanobiology, and protecting electronic and non-electronic devices and equipment. Despite its ubiquity, there are improvements to be considered, namely, decreasing its gel point at room temperature, understanding volatile gas products upon aging, and determining how material properties change over its lifespan. In this work, these aspects were investigated by incorporating well-defined compounds (the Ashby–Karstedt catalyst and tetrakis (dimethylsiloxy) silane) into Sylgard 184 to make modified formulations. As a result of these additions, the curing time at room temperature was accelerated, which allowed for Sylgard 184 to be useful within a much shorter time frame. Additionally, long-term thermal accelerated aging was performed on Sylgard 184 and its modifications in order to create predictive lifetime models for its volatile gas generation and material properties.

Gamma Radiation Chemistry of Polydimethylsiloxane Foam in Radiation-Thermal Environments: Experiments and Simulations

The γ radiolysis behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in the radiation-thermal environments (dose rate, 0.2 Gy/s) is studied to pinpoint the basic knowledge of the temperature (20-70 °C) effects. The non-monotonous temperature effects on the formation of gas products, paramagnetic species in silica, and cross-linking density are proposed to correlate with the complex chemical reaction mechanisms. Besides, molecular dynamics simulation and theoretical calculation are first performed simultaneously based on the radical chemistry and intricate material composition, making it easier to comprehend and further harness the radiolysis mechanisms and structure deterioration of PDMS. The γ radiation-induced primary gas products and dominant cross-linking phenomena are reproduced by the molecular dynamics simulations with a reactive force field, and the reaction mechanisms and physicochemical interactions among PDMS chains, gas products, reactive radicals, and silica fillers are thoroughly studied at the atomic scale. The thermochemistry of the barrierless radical coupling reactions and reactions with explicit high-barrier transition states is calculated at the M06-2X theoretical level with the 6-311g(d, p) basis set. The barrierless reactions are all exothermal with the heat release of 321-618 kJ/mol, while the potential barriers for reactions with explicit transition states vary between 37 and 229 kJ/mol. The results show that γ radiation-induced radicals are crucial for the ensuing gas formation and cross-linking reactions, especially for the radical coupling reactions. The radical chemistry involved in the radiolytic PDMS is the key to understand and simulate its radiolysis behavior, according to the experimental and simulated results.

Chemical and photo-initiated aging enhances transport risk of microplastics in saturated soils: Key factors, mechanisms, and modeling

Microplastics (MPs) inevitably undergo aging transformation and transport process in environmental compartments. In this study, the polystyrene MPs were aged via three different oxidation methods including persulfate oxidation (PS), UV irradiation (UV), and UV irradiated persulfate oxidation (UVPS). All three treatments induced the great transformation of MPs, with the significant increase in surface roughness and in oxygen-containing functional groups, i.e., COOH or COOC. The UVPS aging showed synergetic effect due to the strengthened photo-initiated chemical oxidation, compared to UV and PS alone. All aged MPs exhibited the enhanced transport (34.9%-89.2%) in sandy and clay loam soils than pristine MPs (30.5%), and the synergetic effect was also observed in the transport behaviors of the UVPS MPs. Higher transport of MPs and aged MPs occurred in sandy soil than that in clay loam soil since the latter one contained high Fe minerals that tend to retain MPs, which was confirmed by the model quartz sand column experiment. Modeling on the migration of MPs retained in soil under a rainstorm scenario showed that the aged MPs had the stronger remobility and greater proportion of cumulative flux than pristine ones in the soil profile. These findings provided new insights on the fate and transport of MPs in natural soil and their potential risk to groundwater contamination.

Laboratory simulation of microplastics weathering and its adsorption behaviors in an aqueous environment: A systematic review

Microplastics (MPs) pollution has become a global environmental concern. MPs alone and in combination with pollutants can potentially cause significant harm to organisms and human beings. Weathering of MPs under various environmental stresses increases the uncertainty of their environmental fates. Compared with field surveys, laboratory simulation experiments are appropriate to simplify the research procedures and investigate the mechanisms. In this review, the effects of abrasion, solar radiation, chemical and thermal oxidation, microbial adhesion and colonization, and other environmental factors on the MPs and the relative laboratory simulation methods were summarized and discussed. Photo-oxidation and abrasion are the most appliable methods due to easy operation and adjustable weathering degree. Furthermore, the structural and components changes in weathering process and the applied characterization methods were generalized. In addition, one of important environmental behaviors, adsorption of the weathered MPs towards two typical pollutants was analyzed. Finally, three priorities for research were proposed. This paper conducts systematic summarized of the MPs weathering process and provides a reference for future studies to accurately determine the environmental risks of weathering MPs.

Influence of Oxygen Diffusion on Thermal Ageing of Cross-Linked Polyethylene Cable Insulation

Thermal ageing of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable insulation is an important issue threatening the safe operation of power cables. In this paper, thermal ageing of XLPE was carried out at 160 °C in air for 240 h. The influence of oxygen diffusion on thermal ageing of XLPE was investigated by Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis), tensile testing, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was observed that the degradation degree not only depended on ageing time but also on sample positions. The thermally aged samples were more oxidized in the surface region, presented a darker color, more carbon atoms appeared in the conjugate cluster, had smaller elongation at break and tensile strength, and a larger carbonyl index. As ageing time increased, the non-uniform oxidation of the XLPE samples became more prominent. The degree of non-uniform oxidation caused by oxygen diffusion was quantitatively studied by first order oxidation kinetic. The calculated results demonstrated that carbonyl index measured by FTIR was more sensitive to non-uniform oxidation with a shape parameter in the range of 1-2. The result shown in this paper is helpful for interpreting and predicting the non-uniform ageing behavior of high voltage XLPE cables.

Degradation Assessment of Polyethylene-Based Material Through Electrical and Chemical-Physical Analyses

The usability of any material hinges upon its stability over time. One of the major concerns, focusing on polymeric materials, is the degradation they face during their service life. The degradation mechanisms are deeply influenced by the aging temperature to which the material is subjected. In this paper, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) flat specimens were thermally aged under two different temperatures (90 °C and 110 °C) and analyzed. Specimens were characterized through both the most common mechanical and chemical measurements techniques (e.g., tensile stress, thermal analyses, oxidation induction time) and electrical measurements (dielectric spectroscopy, in particular), which are examples of non-destructive techniques. As a result, a very spread characterization of the polyethylene-based materials was obtained and a very good correlation was found to exist between these different techniques, highlighting the possibility of following the aging degradation development of polymers through electrical non-destructive techniques.

Challenges with Verifying Microbial Degradation of Polyethylene

Polyethylene (PE) is the most abundant synthetic, petroleum-based plastic materials produced globally, and one of the most resistant to biodegradation, resulting in massive accumulation in the environment. Although the microbial degradation of polyethylene has been reported, complete biodegradation of polyethylene has not been achieved, and rapid degradation of polyethylene under ambient conditions in the environment is still not feasible. Experiments reported in the literature suffer from a number of limitations, and conclusive evidence for the complete biodegradation of polyethylene by microorganisms has been elusive. These limitations include the lack of a working definition for the biodegradation of polyethylene that can lead to testable hypotheses, a non-uniform description of experimental conditions used, and variations in the type(s) of polyethylene used, leading to a profound limitation in our understanding of the processes and mechanisms involved in the microbial degradation of polyethylene. The objective of this review is to outline the challenges in polyethylene degradation experiments and clarify the parameters required to achieve polyethylene biodegradation. This review emphasizes the necessity of developing a biochemically-based definition for the biodegradation of polyethylene (and other synthetic plastics) to simplify the comparison of results of experiments focused for the microbial degradation of polyethylene.
