Thermal, morphological and rheological characterization of poly(acrylic acid-g-styrene) amphiphilic graft copolymers

Polypropylene Nanocomposites Attained by In Situ Polymerization Using SBA-15 Particles as Support for Metallocene Catalysts: Effect of Molecular Weight and Tacticity on Crystalline Details, Phase Transitions and Rheological Behavior

In this study, nanocomposites based on polypropylene are synthesized by the in situ polymerization of propene in the presence of mesoporous SBA-15 silica, which acts as a carrier of the catalytic system (zirconocene as catalyst and methylaluminoxane as cocatalyst). The protocol for the immobilization and attainment of hybrid SBA-15 particles involves a pre-stage of contact between the catalyst with cocatalyst before their final functionalization. Two zirconocene catalysts are tested in order to attain materials with different microstructural characteristics, molar masses and regioregularities of chains. Some polypropylene chains are able to be accommodated within the silica mesostructure of these composites. Thus, an endothermic event of small intensity appears during heating calorimetric experiments at approximately 105 °C. The existence of these polypropylene crystals, confined within the nanometric channels of silica, is corroborated by SAXS measurements obtained via the change in the intensity and position of the first-order diffraction of SBA-15. The incorporation of silica also has a very significant effect on the rheological response of the resultant materials, leading to important variations in various magnitudes, such as the shear storage modulus, viscosity and δ angle, when a comparison is established with the corresponding neat iPP matrices. Rheological percolation is reached, thus demonstrating the role of SBA-15 particles as filler, in addition to the supporting role that they exert during the polymerizations.

Antimicrobial Activity and Crystallization Features in Bio-Based Composites of PLLA and MCM-41 Particles Either Pristine or Functionalized with Confined Ag Nanowires

Composites based on an L-rich poly(lactic acid) (PLLA) and MCM-41, either neat or modified with a silver (MCM-41@Ag), are achieved by solvent casting, being next processed by compression molding. Ag is mainly embedded as nanowires within the hybrid MCM-41@Ag particles, enabling its antimicrobial character. In these composites, the PLLA thermal stability, nucleation efficiency, and mechanical response are dependent on the MCM-41 nature and, to a lesser extent, on its content. Thus, differences in transitions of the PLLA matrix are noticed during cooling at 10 °C/min and in the subsequent heating when composites with neat or modified MCM-41 are compared. A very remarkable nucleation effect is played by pristine MCM-41, being inferior when MCM-41@Ag is incorporated into the PLLA. Wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements using synchrotron radiation and performed under variable-temperature conditions in the composites containing MCM-41@Ag indicate that during cold crystallization, the disordered α' polymorph is initially formed, but it rapidly transforms into ordered α crystals. A long spacing peak, clearly seen in pure PLLA, appears as a small shoulder in PLLAMCM@Ag4 and is undetectable in PLLAMCM@Ag9 and PLLAMCM@Ag20. Furthermore, an increase in MH with the silica content is found in the two sets of composites, the higher MH values being observed in the family of PLLA and MCM-41@Ag. Finally, remarkable antimicrobial features are noticeable in the composites with MCM-41@Ag since this modified silica transfers its biocidal characteristics into the PLLA composites.

Synergistic effect of GO/ZnO loading on the performance of cellulose acetate/chitosan blended reverse osmosis membranes for NOM rejection

Declining freshwater resources along with their pollution are threatening the life existence on earth. To meet the freshwater demand, one of the most appropriate and possible ways which has been adopted all over the world is to reuse wastewater by removing its impurities. Among many water pollutants, natural organic matter (NOM) is found to be responsible as major precursor for the formation of other pollutants. Removal of NOM from wastewater is being done by using membrane filtration systems incorporated with certain nanofillers to increase membranes efficiency and permeability. In this study, novel nanocomposite reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were prepared using cellulose acetate and chitosan in N,N-Dimethyl formamide. Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and zinc oxide (ZnO) in different concentration were loaded to modify the membranes for tuning their RO performance. The confirmation of the functional groups is demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy which revealed the specific peaks indicating the formation of the nano-composite membranes. The surface morphology was studied by scanning electronic microscopy which shows a gradual transformation of the membrane surface from voids-free to macro-voids filled surface up to threshold concentration of GO and ZnO. The thermal properties of GO based membranes were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The uniform interaction of the GO and ZnO with polymers induced the remarkable thermal properties of the synthesized membranes. Permeate flux and contact angle measurements were considered to estimate their water content (96%) capacity and NOM rejection (96%) using 0.1 ppm humic acid solution. The permeate flux, NOM rejection and the water content changed directly with GO and inversely with ZnO wt% in the membranes up to GO5 (GO:0.14: ZnO:0.03) whereas the contact angle exhibited the inverse relationship with GO and ZnO concentration in casting solution of the synthesized membranes. Hence it can be concluded that prepared RO membranes are suitable for NOM rejection and recommended for water treatment.

Influence of Content in D Isomer and Incorporation of SBA-15 Silica on the Crystallization Ability and Mechanical Properties in PLLA Based Materials

Two L-rich polylactides (PLLA) with distinct contents in D isomer and their composites with an intermediate amount of mesoporous Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15) (about 9 wt.%) particles were attained by melt extrusion for the evaluation of the effect of content in D isomer and incorporation of mesoporous silica on the structural PLLA features and on their ultimate mechanical performance. For that, samples have been crystallized under dynamic and isothermal tests (from the melt and from the glassy states). The results from DSC and X-ray diffraction show obtainment of the pure α’ and α modifications at different intervals of crystallization temperature depending on the D steroisomer amount of the PLLA used. Furthermore, several phase transitions are observed depending on the crystallinity reached and the polymorphs developed during the isothermal crystallization from the glass: an additional cold crystallization, the α’/α transformation and the subsequent melting process, appearing all of them at temperatures clearly dependent on the D content. Rigidity, measured through microhardness in amorphous samples, is also affected by the D isomer and the presence of SBA-15 particles. Reinforcement effect of mesoporous silica is relatively more important in the matrix with the highest D content.

Catalytic Reduction of Organic Dyes by Multilayered Graphene Platelets and Silver Nanoparticles in Polyacrylic Acid Hydrogel

Graphene oxide has been widely used in the oxidative degradation of environmental pollutants. However, its catalytic role can be questioned as graphene oxide with oxygen-containing functional groups may also act as reactant in oxidative reactions. Herein, hydrogel composites loaded with multilayered graphene platelets showed excellent catalytic performance for the reduction of a wastewater organic pollutant (methylene blue) under NaBH₄, which proved the catalytic role of multilayered graphene platelets. The liquid-based direct exfoliation method was used to prepare two-dimensional materials, which is compatible with other liquid phase methods to prepare nanomaterials. Hydrogel composites composed of multilayered graphene platelets, silver nanoparticles, and polyacrylic acid hydrogels were synthesized in water solution under irradiation with ultraviolet light, demonstrating the advantages of synthesizing nanocomposites using the liquid-based direct exfoliation method.

Crystalline Characteristics and Their Influence in the Mechanical Performance in Poly(ε-Caprolactone) / High Density Polyethylene Blends

Blends of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) have been prepared at different compositions in order to assess the effect of HDPE on gas transport and mechanical behaviors of PCL. Previous to this evaluation, a complete morphological, structural, and thermal characterization were performed using techniques, including SEM, contact angle, FTIR, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation at small and wide angles. Low HDPE incorporations allow interactions to be established at interfaces in the amorphous regions and the enhancement of the mechanical performance. Consequently, the addition of a small amount of HDPE (ranging from 5 to 10 wt%) appears to be appropriate in certain bio-applications where a higher mechanical behavior is required.

Extraordinary mechanical performance in disentangled UHMWPE films processed by compression molding

An approach to obtain disentangled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) films is proposed using a common compression molding. For that, disentangled UHMWPE nascent powders from reactor are processed at temperatures lower than the main melting peak and at high pressure. Then, disentangled UHMWPE films obtained from homogeneous polymerization powders and from those that incorporate SBA-15 mesoporous silica can be easily achieved by this simple methodology. These disentangled UHMWPE based materials show very high crystallinity and, consequently, outstanding elastic modulus and hardness, both further increasing by presence of mesoporous SBA-15 in the hybrids.

Electro-responsive graphene oxide hydrogels for skin bandages: The outcome of gelatin and trypsin immobilization

A free radical polymerization method was adopted for the fabrication of hybrid hydrogel films based on acrylamide and polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate as plasticizing and crosslinking agents, respectively, to be employed as smart skin bandages. Electro-sensitivity, biocompatibility and proteolytic properties were conferred to the final polymer networks by introducing graphene oxide (0.5% w/w), gelatin or trypsin (10% w/w) in the polymerization feed. The physical chemical and mechanical characterization of hybrid materials was performed by means of determination of protein content, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of tensile strength. The evaluation of both water affinity and curcumin release profiles (analyzed by suitable mathematical modelling) upon application of an external electric stimulation in the 0-48 voltage range, confirmed the possibility to modulate the release kinetics. Proper proteolytic tests showed that the trypsin enzymatic activity was retained by 80% upon immobilization. Moreover, for all samples, we observed a viability higher than 94% in normal human fibroblast cells (MRC-5), while a reduction of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus CFU mL^-1 (90%) was obtained with curcumin loaded samples.

Air-Water Interfacial Properties of Chloroform-Spread versus Water-Spread Poly((d,l-lactic acid- co-glycolic acid)- block-ethylene glycol) (PLGA-PEG) Polymers

Polymers at fluid interfaces are used for a number of applications that include coatings, electronics, separation, energy, cosmetics, and medicines. Here, we present a study on an amphiphilic block copolymer, poly((d,l-lactic acid- co-glycolic acid)- block-ethylene glycol) (PLGA-PEG), at the air-water interface. PLGA-PEG at the air-water interface prepared by using an organic spreading solvent exhibits an extremely high surface pressure without the occurrence of desorption, making it an attractive candidate for a variety of uses in the areas mentioned above. The origin of this high surface pressure increase was shown to be due to the glass transition of the PLGA segments. The temperature at which this glass transition occurs for the PLGA segments of PLGA-PEG at the air-water interface was measured to be about 290 K by thermodynamic analysis based on the two-dimensional Maxwell relations. However, from an applications standpoint, spreading by an organic solvent greatly limits its scope of feasible uses. To explore the possibility of maintaining the excellent surface mechanical properties of the PLGA-PEG at the air-water interface while not using an organic solvent, we investigated the air-water interfacial properties of water-spread PLGA-PEG. When spread with water, it was shown that the initial micelles that form in the aqueous spreading solution remain intact even after being spread onto the air-water interface. Due to this different morphology, the surface pressure and monolayer stability were greatly reduced for the water-spread PLGA-PEG at the air-water interface. We used the Daoud and Cotton's blob scaling model to describe the desorption process of the water-spread PLGA-PEG at the air-water interface. From the scaling concept, it was shown that with higher PEG molecular weight and larger micelle size, the adsorption energy of the water-spread PLGA-PEG to the air-water interface was increased.

Nanopatterned polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) surfaces to modulate cell-material interaction

In this work we explore the effect of surface nanoarchitecture of polystyrene (PS) and polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymer films on cell viability. PS and PS-b-PAA have been nanopatterned at temperatures of 110, 120 and 140°C using nanoporous aluminium oxide membranes (AAO) as a template. Surface architecture strongly depends on the infiltration temperature and the nature of the infiltrated polymer. High patterning temperatures yield hollow fibre shape architecture at the nanoscale level, which substantially modifies the surface hydrophobicity of the resulting materials. Up to date very scarce reports could be found in the literature dealing with the interaction of microstructured/nanostructured polymeric surfaces with cancer cells. Therefore, MCF-7 breast cancer cells have been selected as a model to conduct cell viability assays. The findings reveal that the fine-tuning of the surface nanoarchitecture contributes to the modification of its biocompatibility. Overall, this study highlights the potential of AAO membranes to obtain well-defined tailored morphologies at nanoscale level and its importance to develop novel soft functional surfaces to be used in the biomedical field.

Poly(acrylic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol) nanoparticles designed for ophthalmic drug delivery

Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), four-arm, amine-terminated particles with nanometer size and spherical shape were obtained by the polymers cross-linking, via activation with 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride, in a w/o emulsion. The morphology and surface charge of the final particles are strongly dependent on the molar ratio of PAA-PEG and the PAA concentration. The physicochemical characteristics correlated with the drug-loading capacity, in vitro and ex vivo release kinetics of pilocarpine hydrochloride and biocompatibility results indicate that these nanoparticles exhibit the prerequisite behavior for use as carriers of ophthalmic drugs.
