Abstract
The production of renewable materials from alternative sources is becoming increasingly important to reduce the detrimental environmental effects of their non-renewable counterparts and natural resources, while making them more economical and sustainable. Chemical surfactants, which are highly toxic and non-biodegradable, are used in a wide range of industrial and environmental applications harming humans, animals, plants, and other entities. Chemical surfactants can be substituted with biosurfactants (BS), which are produced by microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and yeast. They have excellent emulsifying, foaming, and dispersing properties, as well as excellent biodegradability, lower toxicity, and the ability to remain stable under severe conditions, making them useful for a variety of industrial and environmental applications. Despite these advantages, BS derived from conventional resources and precursors (such as edible oils and carbohydrates) are expensive, limiting large-scale production of BS. In addition, the use of unconventional substrates such as agro-industrial wastes lowers the BS productivity and drives up production costs. However, overcoming the barriers to commercial-scale production is critical to the widespread adoption of these products. Overcoming these challenges would not only promote the use of environmentally friendly surfactants but also contribute to sustainable waste management and reduce dependence on non-renewable resources. This study explores the efficient use of wastes and other low-cost substrates to produce glycolipids BS, identifies efficient substrates for commercial production, and recommends strategies to improve productivity and use BS in environmental remediation.

Abstract
Biosurfactants, as microbial bioproducts, have significant potential in the field of microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). Biosurfactants are microbial bioproducts with the potential to reduce the interfacial tension (IFT) between crude oil and water, thus enhancing oil recovery. This study aims to investigate the production and characterization of biosurfactants and evaluate their effectiveness in increasing oil recovery. Pseudoxanthomonas taiwanensis was cultured on SMSS medium to produce biosurfactants. Crude oil was found to be the most effective carbon source for biosurfactant production. The biosurfactants exhibited comparable activity to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) at a concentration of 400 ppm in reducing IFT. It was characterized as glycolipids, showing stability in emulsions at high temperatures (up to 120 °C), pH levels ranging from 3 to 9, and NaCl concentrations up to 10% (w/v). Response surface methodology revealed the optimized conditions for the most stable biosurfactants (pH 7, temperature of 40 °C, and salinity of 2%), resulting in an EI24 value of 64.45%. Experimental evaluations included sand pack column and core flooding studies, which demonstrated additional oil recovery of 36.04% and 12.92%, respectively. These results indicate the potential application of P. taiwanensis biosurfactants as sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches to enhance oil recovery in MEOR processes.

Abstract
The unique properties of biosurfactants obtained from microbes, including their activity at extreme temperatures, make them more attractive than synthetic alternatives. Henceforth, the principle objective is to isolate and detect the antibacterial and antifungal activities of the biosurfactants produced from bacteria of the economically competitive mangrove ecosystem. Using the serial dilution method, 53 bacterial strains were recovered from the Manakudy mangrove forest in Kanyakumari, India, for the investigation. Different biosurfactant screening methods and morphological and biochemical tests were opted to select the potential biosurfactant producer. After the initial screening, two strains were discovered by 16S rRNA gene sequencing followed by extraction using chloroform: methanol (2:1) by the precipitation method. The partially purified biosurfactants were then screened for antimicrobial properties against pathogens including Mucor sp., Trichoderma sp. Morphological, biochemical, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing identified the two strains to be gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria namely Virgibacillus halodentrificans CMST-ZI (GenBank Accession No.: OL336402.1) and Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CMST-ZI (GenBank Accession No (10 K): OL308085.1). The two extracted biosurfactants viz., 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, mono (2-ethylhexyl) ester, as well as cycloheptane efficiently inhibited human pathogens, including Enterococcus faecalis, and fungi, including Mucor sp., Trichoderma sp., indicated by the formation of a zone of inhibition in pharmacological screening. Thus, there is a growing interest in the prospective application of these biosurfactants isolated from marine microbes, exhibiting antimicrobial properties which can be further studied as a potential candidate in biomedical studies and eco-friendly novel drug development.

Abstract
The production of biosurfactants and lipases through solid-state fermentation (SSF) processes remains relatively unexplored, especially in bacterial applications. The use of solid matrices, eliminating the need for precipitation and recovery processes, holds significant potential for facilitating bioremediation. This study aimed to simultaneously produce biocompounds via SSF using Bacillus methylotrophicus and employ the fermented substrate for remediating soil contaminated with 20% biodiesel. Initial efforts focused on determining optimal conditions for concurrent lipase and biosurfactant production during an 8-day fermentation period. The selected conditions, including a substrate mix of wheat bran and corn cob (80/20), 75% moisture, 1% glycerol inducer, 2% nitrogen, and 1% sugarcane molasses, resulted in a 24.61% reduction in surface tension and lipase activity of 3.54 ± 1.20 U. Subsequently, a 90-day bioremediation of clayey soil contaminated with biodiesel showcased notable biodegradation, reaching 72.08 ± 0.36% within the initial 60 days. The incorporation of biocompounds, biostimulation, and bioaugmentation (Test E2) contributed to this efficacy. The use of the fermented substrate as a biostimulant and bioaugmentation agent facilitated in situ biocompound production in the soil, leading to a 23.97% reduction in surface tension and lipase production of 1.52 ± 0.19 U. Abstract
Microbial surfactants are green molecules with high surface activities having the most promising advantages over chemical surfactants including their ability to efficiently reducing surface and interfacial tension, nontoxic emulsion-based formulations, biocompatibility, biodegradability, simplicity of preparation from low cost materials such as residual by-products and renewable resources at large scales, effectiveness and stabilization under extreme conditions and broad spectrum antagonism of pathogens to be part of the biocontrol strategy. Thus, biosurfactants are universal tools of great current interest. The present work describes the major types and microbial origin of surfactants and their production optimization from agro-industrial wastes in the batch shake-flasks and bioreactor systems through solid-state and submerged fermentation industries. Various downstream strategies that had been developed to extract and purify biosurfactants are discussed. Further, the physicochemical properties and functional characteristics of biosurfactants open new future prospects for the development of efficient and eco-friendly commercially successful biotechnological product compounds with diverse potential applications in environment, industry, biomedicine, nanotechnology and energy-saving technology as well.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis SPB1 derived biosurfactants (BioS) proved its bio-control activity against Agrobacterium tumefaciens using tomato plant. Almost 83% of disease symptoms triggered by Agrobacterium tumefaciens were reduced. Aiming potential application, we studied lipopeptide cost-effective production in both fermentations systems, namely the submerged fermentation (SmF) and the solid-state fermentation (SSF) as well as the use of Aleppo pine waste and confectionery effluent as cheap substrates. Optimization studies using Box-Behnken (BB) design followed by the analysis with response surface methodology were applied. When using an effluent/sea water ratio of 1, Aleppo pine waste of 14.08 g/L and an inoculum size of 0.2, a best production yield of 17.16 ± 0.91 mg/g was obtained for the SmF. While for the SSF, the best production yield of 27.59 ± 1.63 mg/g was achieved when the value of Aleppo pine waste, moisture, and inoculum size were, respectively, equal to 25 g, 75%, and 0.2. Hence, this work demonstrated the superiority of SSF over SmF.

Abstract
Biosurfactants reduce surface and interfacial tension due to their amphiphilic properties and are an eco-friendly alternative for chemical surfactants. In this study, a new yeast strain JAF-11 that produces a biosurfactant was selected using drop collapse method, and the properties of the extracts were investigated. The nucleotide sequences of the strain were compared with closely related strains and identified based on the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Neodothiora populina CPC 39399T, the closest species with strain JAF-11, showed a sequence similarity of 97.75% for LSU and 94.27% for ITS, respectively. The result suggests that the strain JAF-11 represents a distinct species that cannot be assigned to any existing genus or species in the family Dothideaceae. Strain JAF-11 produced a biosurfactant reducing the surface tension of water from 72 mN/m to 34.5 mN/m on the sixth day of culture and the result of measuring the critical micelle concentration (CMC) by extracting the crude biosurfactant was found to be 24 mg/l. The molecular weight 502 of the purified biosurfactant was confirmed by measuring the fast atom bombardment mass spectrum. The chemical structure was analyzed by measuring 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and two-dimensional NMRs of the compound. The molecular formula was C26H46O9, and it was composed of one octanoyl group and two hexanoyl groups to myo-inositol moiety. The new biosurfactant is the first report of a compound produced by a new yeast strain, JAF-11.

Abstract
The advancement of science and technology demands chemistry which is safer, smarter and green by nature. The sustainability of science thus requires well-behaved alternates that best suit the demand. Bio-surfactants are surface active compounds, established to affect surface chemistry. In general, microbial bio-surfactants are a group of structurally diverse molecules produced by different microbes. A large number of bio-surfactants are produced during hydrocarbon degradation by hydrocarbonoclistic microorganisms during their own growth on carbohydrates and the production rate is influenced by the rate of degradation of carbohydrates. The production of such biological surfactants is thus of greater importance. This write up is a dedicated review to update the existing knowledge of inexpensive carbohydrate sources as substrates, microorganisms and technologies of biosurfactant production. This is an economy friendly as well as sustainable approach which will facilitate achieving some sustainable development goals. The production is dependent on the fermentation strategies, different factors of the microbial culture broth and downstream processing; these all have been elaborately presented in this article.

Abstract
The relevance of this work lies in the fact that it is the first time that corn steep liquor (CSL) has been proposed as a unique source of nutrients for producing biosurfactants in a controlled fermentation and Aneurinibacillus aneurinilyticus, isolated from CSL, has been evaluated for producing extracellular and cell-bound biosurfactants in a controlled fermentation, using secondary raw materials as a source of nutrients. In the present study, A. aneurinilyticus was inoculated into the culture medium containing sterilized CSL solutions (100–400 g L−1) and incubated using different temperatures (20–60 °C) and fermentation times (8–30 days). The dependent variables under study were the concentration of extracellular biosurfactants and cell-bound biosurfactant production in terms of critical micellar concentration (CMC), as well as the C/N ratio for cell-bound biosurfactant extracts. It was observed that CSL could increase the concentration of extracellular biosurfactants produced by A. aneurinilyticus if these were fermented during 19 days at 40 °C, using 250 g L−1 of CSL; a mean value of 6 g L−1 for extracellular biosurfactants and favorable CMC concentrations enabled the detection of cell-bound biosurfactant extracts under these conditions. Hence, these conditions could be considered optimal for producing both extracellular and cell-bound biosurfactants from CSL.

Abstract
Currently, researchers have focused on electrokinetic (EK) bioremediation due to its potential to remove a wide-range of pollutants. Further, to improve their performance, synthetic surfactants are employed as effective additives because of their excellent solubility and mobility. Synthetic surfactants have an excessive position in industries since they are well-established, cheap, and easily available. Nevertheless, these surfactants have adverse environmental effects and could be detrimental to aquatic and terrestrial life. Owing to social and environmental awareness, there is a rising demand for bio-based surfactants in the global market, from environmental sustainability to public health, because of their excellent surface and interfacial activity, higher and stable emulsifying property, biodegradability, non- or low toxicity, better selectivity and specificity at extreme environmental conditions. Unfortunately, challenges to biosurfactants, like expensive raw materials, low yields, and purification processes, hinder their applicability to large-scale. To date, extensive research has already been conducted for production scale-up using multidisciplinary approaches. However, it is still essential to research and develop high-yielding bacteria for bioproduction through traditional and biotechnological advances to reduce production costs. Herein, this review evaluates the recent progress made on microbial-surfactants for bioproduction scale-up and provides detailed information on traditional and advanced genetic engineering approaches for cost-effective bioproduction. Furthermore, this study emphasized the role of electrokinetic (EK) bioremediation and discussed the application of BioS-mediated EK for various pollutants remediation.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are amphipathic molecules capable of lowering interfacial and superficial tensions. Produced by living organisms, these compounds act the same as chemical surfactants but with a series of improvements, the most notable being biodegradability. Biosurfactants have a wide diversity of categories. Within these, lipopeptides are some of the more abundant and widely known. Protein-containing biosurfactants are much less studied and could be an interesting and valuable alternative. The harsh temperature, pH, and salinity conditions that target organisms can sustain need to be understood for better implementation. Here, we will explore biotechnological applications via lipopeptide and protein-containing biosurfactants. Also, we discuss their natural role and the organisms that produce them, taking a glimpse into the possibilities of research via meta-omics and machine learning.

Abstract
Majority of industries, in order to meet the technological development and consumer demands generate waste. The untreated waste spreads out toxic and harmful substances in the environment which serves as a breeding ground for pathogenic microorganisms thus causing severe health hazards. The three industrial sectors namely food, agriculture, and oil industry are among the primary organic waste producers that affect urban health and economic growth. Conventional treatment generates a significant amount of greenhouse gases which further contributes to global warming. Thus, the use of microbes for utilization of this waste, liberating CO2 offers an indispensable tool. The simultaneous production of value-added products such as bioplastics, biofuels, and biosurfactants increases the economics of the process and contributes to environmental sustainability. This review comprehensively summarized the composition of organic waste generated from the food, agriculture, and oil industry. The linkages between global health hazards of industrial waste and environmental implications have been uncovered. Stare-of-the-art information on their subsequent utilization as a substrate to produce value-added products through bio-routes has been elaborated. The research gaps, economical perspective(s), and future research directions have been identified and discussed to strengthen environmental sustainability.

Abstract
Functional foods are essential food products that possess health-promoting properties for the treatment of infectious diseases. In addition, they provide energy and nutrients, which are required for growth and survival. They occur as prebiotics or dietary supplements, including oligosaccharides, processed foods, and herbal products. However, oligosaccharides are more efficiently recognized and utilized, as they play a fundamental role as functional ingredients with great potential to improve health in comparison to other dietary supplements. They are low molecular weight carbohydrates with a low degree of polymerization. They occur as fructooligosaccharide (FOS), inulooligosaccharadie (IOS), and xylooligosaccahride (XOS), depending on their monosaccharide units. Oligosaccharides are produced by acid or chemical hydrolysis. However, this technique is liable to several drawbacks, including inulin precipitation, high processing temperature, low yields, and high production costs. As a consequence, the application of microbial enzymes for oligosaccharide production is recognized as a promising strategy. Microbial enzymatic production of FOS and IOS occurs by submerged or solid-state fermentation in the presence of suitable substrates (sucrose, inulin) and catalyzed by fructosyltransferases and inulinases. Incorporation of FOS and IOS enriches the rheological and physiological characteristics of foods. They are used as low cariogenic sugar substitutes, suitable for diabetics, and as prebiotics, probiotics and nutraceutical compounds. In addition, these oligosaccharides are employed as anticancer, antioxidant agents and aid in mineral absorption, lipid metabolism, immune regulation etc. This review, therefore, focuses on the occurrence, physico-chemical characteristics, and microbial enzymatic synthesis of FOS and IOS from coprophilous fungi. In addition, the potential health benefits of these oligosaccharides were discussed in detail.

Abstract
The relationship between lipopeptide and primary metabolite production by Bacillus spp. in solid-state fermentation (SSF) and submerged fermentation (SmF) was evaluated. Four wild-type strains and one mutant strain (unable to develop biofilm) were assessed in SSF and SmF, using a defined medium and polyurethane foam as inert support for SSF. Strain ATCC 21,332 in SSF presented the highest lipopeptide production. The wild-type strains revealed higher lipopeptide and biomass production and lower synthesis of primary metabolites in SSF than in SmF. However, the mutant strain showed a slightly higher production of primary metabolites in SSF than in SmF. Carbon balance analysis showed that the carbon flux was mainly directed to lipopeptides in SSF, whereas in SmF, it was directed to the production of primary metabolites and the carbon flux to lipopeptides is inversely related to primary metabolites in both types of cultures.

Abstract
Waste generation is becoming a global concern owing to its adverse effects on environment and human health. The utilization of waste as a feedstock for production of value-added products has opened new avenues contributing to environmental sustainability. Microorganisms have been employed for production of biosurfactants as secondary metabolites by utilizing waste streams. Utilization of waste as a substrate significantly reduces the cost of overall process. Biosurfactant(s) derived from these processes can be utilized in environmental and different industrial sectors. This review focuses on global market of biosurfactants followed by discussion on production of biosurfactants from waste streams such as agro-industrial waste and waste cooking oil. The need for waste stream derived circular bioeconomy and scale up of biosurfactant production have been narrated with applications of biosurfactants in environment and industrial sectors. Road blocks and future directions for research have also been discussed.

Abstract
Nine morphologically distinct halophilic yeasts were isolated from Makgadikgadi and Sua pans, as pristine and extreme environments in Botswana. Screening for biosurfactant production showed that Rhodotorula mucilaginosa SP6 and Debaryomyces hansenii MK9 exhibited the highest biosurfactant activity using Xanthocercis zambesiaca seed powder as a novel and alternative inexpensive carbon substrate. Chemical characterization of the purified biosurfactants by Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectroscopy suggested that the biosurfactant from R. mucilaginosa SP6 was a rhamnolipid-type whereas the biosurfactant from D. hansenii MK9 was a sophorolipid-type. The two biosurfactants exhibited antimicrobial activities against eight pathogenic bacteria and fungal strains (Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Cryptococcus neoformans, Candida albicans and Aspergilus niger). The sophorolopid-type biosurfactant was found to be the most potent among the antimicrobial drug resistant strains tested. The findings open up prospects for the development of environmentally friendly antimicrobial drugs that use an inexpensive source of carbon to reduce the costs associated with the production of biosurfactants.

Abstract
AIM Characterization of biosurfactant produced by a carbazole-degrading bacterium Roseomonas cervicalis and proteomic analysis of intracellular proteins of bacterium while growing on glucose and carbazole medium. METHODS AND RESULTS The bacterium R. cervicalis was isolated from a soil sample contaminated with crude petroleum oil. PCR amplification ascertained the existence of some hydrocarbon-degrading catabolic genes (alkB and PAH-RHDα, C12O, and C23O) in the bacterial genome. GC-MS and RP-HPLC analyses demonstrated 62% and 60% carbazole degradation, respectively, by R. cervicalis 144 h post-incubation at 37℃ and pH 6.5. Due to the paucity of protein databases, expressions of only 29 and 14 intracellular proteins were explicitly recognized and quantitated by mass spectrometry analysis when R. cervicalis was grown in carbazole and glucose medium, respectively. FTIR, NMR and HR-MS/MS analyses demonstrated the lipopeptide nature of the purified biosurfactant produced by R. cervicalis. The biosurfactant is also presumed to assist in the solubilization of carbazole. CONCLUSION The isolated R. cervicalis strain is a potential candidate for the bioremediation of carbazole in petroleum-oil-contaminated sites. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report of the promising R. cervicalis strain proficient in carbazole biodegradation.

Abstract
An effective microbial synthesis of surfactin depends on the composition of the culture medium, the culture conditions and the genetic potential of the producer strain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of various medium components for the surfactin producing strain and to determine the impact of the culture conditions on the biosynthesis of surfactin isoforms by the newly isolated native strain Bacillus subtilis natto BS19. The efficiency of surfactin biosynthesis was determined by measuring the surface tension of the medium before and after submerged culture (SmF) and by qualitative and quantitative analysis of the obtained compound by high performance liquid chromatography. The highest efficiency of surfactin biosynthesis was achieved using starch as the carbon source and yeast extract as the nitrogen source at pH 7.0 and 37 °C. Potato peelings were selected as an effective waste substrate. It was shown that the increase in the percentage of peel extract in the culture medium enhanced the biosynthesis of surfactin (mg/L) (2-30.9%; 4-46.0% and 6-58.2%), while reducing surface tension of the medium by about 50%. The obtained results constitute a promising basis for further research on biosynthesis of surfactin using potato peelings as a cheap alternative to synthetic medium components.

Abstract
Bacillus subtilis is regarded as a suitable host for biochemical production owing to its excellent growth and bioresource utilization characteristics. In addition, the distinct endogenous metabolic pathways and the suitability of the heterologous pathways have made B. subtilis a robust and promising host for producing biochemicals, such as: bioalcohols; bioorganic acids (lactic acids, α-ketoglutaric acid, and γ-aminobutyric acid); biopolymers (poly(γ-glutamic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), and polysaccharides and monosaccharides (N-acetylglucosamine, xylooligosaccharides, and hyaluronic acid)); and bioflocculants. Also for producing oligopeptides and functional peptides, owing to its efficient protein secretion system. Several metabolic and genetic engineering techniques, such as target gene overexpression and inactivation of bypass pathways, have led to the improvement in production titers and product selectivity. In this review article, recent progress in the utilization of robust B. subtilis-based host systems for biomass conversion and biochemical production has been highlighted, and the prospects of such host systems are suggested.

Abstract
Surfactants are multipurpose products found in most sectors of contemporary industry. Their large-scale manufacturing has been mainly carried out using traditional chemical processes. Some of the chemical species involved in their production are considered hazardous and some industrial processes employing them categorised as "having potential negative impact on the environment". Biological surfactants have therefore been generally accepted worldwide as suitable sustainable greener alternatives. Biosurfactants exhibit the same functionalities of synthetic analogues while having the ability to synergize with other molecules improving performances; this strengthens the possibility of reaching different markets via innovative formulations. Recently, their use was suggested to help combat Covid-19. In this review, an analysis of recent bibliography is presented with descriptions, statistics, classifications, applications, advantages, and challenges; evincing the reasons why biosurfactants can be considered as the chemical specialities of the future. Finally, the uses of the solid-state fermentation as a production technology for biosurfactants is presented.

Abstract
Surfactin is one of the main lipopeptide biosurfactants produced by different species of Bacillus subtilis. This study aims to analyze the effect of starch-coated Fe0 and Fe3+ nanoparticles on the biomass and biosurfactant production of Bacillus subtilis. Out of 70 soil samples, 20 Bacillus were isolated and genome sequenced by biochemical methods and 16S rRNA gene. Quantitative and qualitative screening methods were used to isolate and detect biosurfactant production. For the aim of this study, 61 and 63 (Bacillus subtilis subsp. Inaquosorum) were selected. Then, hemolytic activity, biomass amount, surfactant production, and reduction of surface tension in Minimal Salt Medium containing Fe0 and Fe3+ nanoparticles were examined after 48, 72, and 96 h of culture. Strain 61 was the best bacterium and Fe3+ was the best nanoparticle. The results were compared with the results of non-nanoparticle bioreactor. The results showed the amount of biomass, surfactin, and surface tension decrease, 72 h after growth in 61 strain containing Fe3+ reached the highest values. Surfactin from strain 61 culture in the Fe3+nanoparticle bioreactor after 72 h of growth showed higher production than the same strain culture after 72 h without Fe3+, if continuing the research, this strain can be commercialized in the future.

Abstract
There is a growing acceptance worldwide for the application of dispersants as a marine oil spill response strategy. The development of more effective dispersants with less toxicity and higher biodegradability would be a step forward in improving public acceptance and regulatory approvals for their use. By applying advances in environmental biotechnology, a bio-dispersant agent with a lipopeptide biosurfactant produced by Bacillus subtilis N3-1P as the key component was formulated in this study. The economic feasibility of producing biosurfactant (a high-added-value bioproduct) from fish waste-based peptone as a nutrient substrate was evaluated. Protein hydrolyzate was prepared from cod liver and head wastes obtained from fish processing facilities. Hydrolysis conditions (i.e., time, temperature, pH and enzyme to substrate level) for preparing protein hydrolyzates were optimized by response surface methodology using a factorial design. The critical micelle dilution (CMD) value for biosurfactant produced from the fish liver and head waste generated peptones was 54.72 and 47.59 CMD, respectively. Biosurfactant product generated by fish liver peptone had a low critical micelle concentration of 0.18 g L-1 and could reduce the surface tension of distilled water to 27.9 mN/m. Structure characterization proved that the generated biosurfactant product belongs to the lipopeptide class. An alternative to the key surfactant dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium (DOSS) used in Corexit 9500 has been proposed based on a binary mixture of lipopeptides and DOSS that exhibited synergistic effects. Using the standard baffled flask test, a high dispersion efficiency of 76.8% for Alaska North Slope oil was achieved at a biodispersant composition of 80/20 (v/v) of lipopeptides/DOSS. The results show that fish waste can be utilized to produce a more effective, environmentally acceptable and cost-efficient biodispersant that can be applied to oil spills in the marine environment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bioremediation has taken its call for removing pollutants for years. The oilcontaminated surroundings are majorly hazardous for sustaining life, but a great contribution to nature in the form of microorganisms. The complex carbon-hydrogen chain has served as classic raw material to chemical industries, which has perked up the hydrocarbon waste. Microbial remediation has been thus, focused to deal with the lacuna, where the new addition to this category is Microbacterium species. OBJECTIVES The identification and characterization of lipopeptide biosurfactant producing Microbacterium spp. isolated from brackish river water. METHODS The strain was isolated from an oil-contaminated lake. The strain was tested with all the other isolated species for oil degradation using screening protocols such as haemolysis, oil spread assay, BATH, E24, etc. The produced biosurfactant was extracted by acid precipitation, followed by solvent recovery. The strain with maximum potential was sequenced and was subjected to phylogeny assessment using in silico tools. RESULTS Novel Microbacterium species produce the extracellular biosurfactant. The surface tension of Microbacterium was found to be 32mN/m, indicates its powerful surface tension-reducing property. The strain was optimized for the production of biosurfactant and the best results were obtained with sucrose (2%) and yeast extract (3%) medium at 7 pH and 40°C temperature. CONCLUSION The isolate was confirmed to be a novel Microbacterium species that could produce 0.461 gm biosurfactant in 100 ml of the medium throughout a life cycle and novel strain of isolate was deposited to NCBI as Microbacterium spp. ANSKSLAB01 using an accession number: KU179507.

Abstract
The aim of the study was the evaluation of a three-step method for the selection of bacterial strains capable of producing surfactin. The procedure consisted of the following steps: 1.blood agar test, 2. measurement of the surface tension (ST) of the medium using the du Nouy method before and after submerged culture, 3. qualitative and quantitative assessment of surfactin by HPLC. Forty five Bacillus subtilis natto strains producing haemolysis zones (≥3mm) were selected. Nineten of them reduced ST of the medium to ≤ 40 mN/m; in six cases, the reduction was as much as 50%. All indicated strains produced surfactin. Positive correlations (p <0.5) between the percentage reduction of ST of the medium and surfactin concentration (r = 0.44), indicate that this parameter is determinant of the ability to synthesize this compound. The blood agar test has been shown to be useful only as a pre-selection criterion for surfactin producers (18 strains selected by this method reduced ST by only ≤30%). The proposed selection strategy proved effective and made it possible to select the BS15 strain that reduced the ST of the medium to 30.56 ± 0.15 mN/m and simultaneously provided a high concentration of surfactin compared to other strains.

Abstract
In this study, a novel biosurfactant potential bacterial strain Pseudomonas pachastrellae RW43 was isolated from pulp and paper sludge and the biosurfactant namely rhamnolipid produced by Pseudomonas pachastrellae RW43 was investigated by varying pH and incubation time in batch liquid fermentation process. The maximal yield of rhamnolipid was found to be 12.1 g/L at an optimized condition of pH 7 and incubation time of 168 h. NMR analysis was performed for identification of molecular structure of produced rhamnolipid and its results concluded that the product was identified as di rhamnolipid. Then, statistically the global optimum conditions for hydrolytic enzymes extraction parameters (sonication power (100 W), extraction time (15 min) and rhamnolipid dosage (2% v/v)) were established. At 30,456 kJ/kg TS specific energy, ultrasonication with rhamnolipid disintegration method extracted maximal consortium activity of hydrolytic enzymes from mixed sludge (municipal and pulp & paper sludge) and the maximum observed were found to be 42.22, 51.75, 34.26, 24.21, 11.35 Units/g VSS respectively for protease, α-amylase, cellulase, lipase and α-glucosidase. Polyhydroxyalkanoates was recovered from enzymes extracted sludge using various solvents namely chloroform, sodium hypochlorite with chloroform and sodium lauryl sulfate with sodium hypochlorite. The maximum recovery was found to be 74 g/kg using sodium hypochlorite and chloroform extraction solvents.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are amphiphilic molecules produced by a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi. Unlike chemically synthesized surfactants, biosurfactants present advantages, such as biodegradability, low toxicity, high selectivity and activity under extreme temperature, pH and salinity conditions, as well as a low critical micelle concentration. Moreover, they can be produced from agro-industrial waste and renewable sources. Their structural diversity and functional properties mean that they have potential applications in various industrial processes as wetting agents, dispersants, emulsifiers, foaming agents, food additives and detergents, as well as in the field of environmental biotechnology. However, opportunities for their commercialization have been limited due to the low yields obtained in the fermentation processes involved in their production as well as the use of refined raw materials, which means higher cost in production. In an attempt to solve these limitations on the commercialization of biosurfactants, various research groups have focused on testing the use of inexpensive alternative sources, such as agro-industrial waste, as substrates for the production of different biosurfactants. In addition to enabling the economical production of biosurfactants, the use of such waste aims to reduce the accumulation of compounds that cause environmental damage. This review shows advances in biosurfactant production carried out using different waste materials or by-products from agro-industrial activities.

Abstract
Surfactants have been continuously detected within aquatic environments as a consequence of their use on a global scale. Lipopeptides are biosurfactants naturally produced by Bacillus subtilis that have been explored as green alternatives. The assessment of ecotoxicological parameters of synthetic and biogenic surfactants are required for evaluating toxicity values and to verify the eco-friendly behaviour of the biological compounds. This study aimed to conduct toxicity testing for different surfactants - sodium dodecyl sulphate and Triton X-100 - and biosurfactants - surfactin, iturin and fengycin - at different concentrations using Daphnia magna as model organism and Dendrocephalus brasiliensis as alternative test species for monitoring of pollutants in tropical freshwaters. According results, both species showed high sensitivity for the anionic compound SDS concerning the recommended dosage use, exhibiting EC50-48h values of 24.1 and 15.4 mg/L for D. magna and D. brasiliensis, respectively. Although the biological source, surfactin showed the lower safety behaviour among the biogenic surfactants, while iturin and fengycin revealed very low toxicity effects on both organisms. Besides, data exhibited a higher responsiveness of D. brasiliensis for all tested compounds in comparison to D. magna, highlighting the importance of this species for monitoring of pollutants in tropical and subtropical environments.

Abstract
The present study focused on producing and characterizing a type of biosurfactant (BS) derived from lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and its potential applications in pharmaceutical and food industries due to the preference of employing nonpathogenic organisms in bioprocesses. To this aim, several screening approaches were applied to identify an efficient BS-producing strain from a set of LAB, and Pediococcus dextrinicus SHU1593 was selected as the most operative one. The BS produced by P. dextrinicus was isolated and structurally characterized as a lipoprotein with an approximately equal ratio of lipids (~52% (w/w)) and proteins (47% (w/w)). It reduced the surface tension (ST) of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) from 72.80 ± 0.10 to 39.01 ± 0.32 mN/m. The results also indicated the potential of developing low-cost strategies aimed at the production of efficient LAB-derived BSs which are structurally and quantitatively similar to the ones obtained from conventional media. Finally, given the physical and functional characterization (i.e. critical micelle concentration (CMC), emulsification index (%E24), stability, as well as antimicrobial and anti-adhesive activities) of the BS produced in the present study, it can be introduced as a promising candidate to be employed in plenty of areas in pharmaceutical and food industries.

Abstract
Biosurfactants are microbial products that have been increasingly researched due to their many identified advantages, such as low toxicity and high activity at extreme temperatures, but more importantly, they are biodegradable and compatible with the environment. Biosurfactants are versatile products with vast applications in the clean-up of environmental pollutants through biodegradation and bioremediation. They also have applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and other industries. These advantages and wide range of applications have led to the continued interest in biosurfactants. In particular, there is a growing discussion around environmental sustainability and the important role that biosurfactants will increasingly play in the near future, for example, via the use of renewable by-products as substrates, waste reduction, and potential reuse of the treated waste. This has resulted in increased attention on these microbial products in industry. Research highlighting the potential of biosurfactants in environmental sustainability is required to drive efforts to make biosurfactants more viable for commercial and large-scale applications; making them available, cheaper and economically sustainable. The present review discusses the unique relationship between biosurfactants and environmental sustainability, especially the role that biosurfactants play in the clean-up of environmental pollutants and, therefore, increasing environmental protection.

Abstract
This study armed to determine the expression of protease and pectinase in Bacillus subtilis using the herbal saponin extract as the fermentation substrates and then characterize the fermentation broths. The saponin concentration in the crude extract from four herbs reached to 25% under the extraction conditions of 60 °C, with a pH 9 for 3 h at a solid-liquid ratio of 1:18. In direct fermentation of Bacillus subtilis in the saponin extract, the maximum activities of protease and pectinase in the cell supernatant reached 3984 and 227 U/ml, respectively. Correspondingly, when 5% glucose was added to this extract for the fermentation, the two maximum activities were up to 2451 and 1390 U/ml, respectively. When characterization of the two abovementioned fermentation broths was carried out, it was observed that the luminousness values were increased to 26.9 and 39.2% from 9.7% of the initial value after 32 h of fermentation, respectively, and there was no significant change in the saponin concentration during the fermentation processes. The evaluation values of washing performance were remarkably improved by 8.2 and 21.7%, respectively.

Abstract
Currently, there is an absolute concern for all nations in agricultural productivity to meet growing demands of human population. In recent time, biosurfactants produced by diverse group of microorganisms are used to achieve such demands as it is known for its ecofriendly use in elimination of plant pathogens and for increasing the bioavailability of nutrients for plants. Endophytic fungi are the important source of secondary metabolites and novel bioactive compounds for different biological applications. In the present study, endophytic fungi Xylaria regalis (X. regalis) recovered from the cones of Thuja plicata was evaluated for its biosurfactant producing ability and plant growth-promoting abilities through various screening methods and also via its antagonistic activity against phytopathogens like Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus niger. In addition, X. regalis was also tested in vivo for a various range of growth parameters in chilli under greenhouse conditions. Significant increase in shoot and root length, dry matter production of shoot and root, chlorophyll, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents of chilli seedlings was found, which reveals its ability to improve the growth of crop plants. Hence, this study suggests the possibility of biosurfactant producing endophytic fungi X. regalis as a source of novel green biosurfactant for sustainable agriculture to achieve growing demands.

Abstract
Anopheles stephensi acts as vector of Plasmodium parasites, which are responsible for malaria in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. Currently, malaria management is a big challenge due to the presence of insecticide-resistant strains as well as to the development of Plasmodium species highly resistant to major antimalarial drugs. Therefore, the present study focused on biosurfactant produced by two bacteria Bacillus subtilis A1 and Pseudomonas stutzeri NA3, evaluating them for insecticidal applications against malaria mosquitoes. The produced biosurfactants were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which confirmed that biosurfactants had a lipopeptidic nature. Both biosurfactants were tested against larvae and pupae of A. stephensi. LC50 values were 3.58 (larva I), 4.92 (II), 5.73 (III), 7.10 (IV), and 7.99 (pupae) and 2.61 (I), 3.68 (II), 4.48 (III), 5.55 (IV), and 6.99 (pupa) for biosurfactants produced by B. subtilis A1 and P. stutzeri NA3, respectively. Treatments with bacterial surfactants led to various physiological changes including longer pupal duration, shorter adult oviposition period, and reduced longevity and fecundity. To the best of our knowledge, there are really limited reports on the mosquitocidal and physiological effects due to biosurfactant produced by bacterial strains. Overall, the toxic activity of these biosurfactant on all young instars of A. stephensi, as well as their major impact on adult longevity and fecundity, allows their further consideration for the development of insecticides in the fight against malaria mosquitoes.

Abstract
I studied the possibility of using amino acid-based surfactants as emulsifiers at the same time as preservatives. Fourteen lipopeptides were synthesized employing a solid phase peptide synthesis procedure. All compounds were designed to be positively charged from +1 to +4 and acylated with fatty acid chain—palmitic and miristic. The surface activity of the obtained lipopeptides was tested using a semi-automatic tensiometer to calculate parameters describing the behavior of lipopeptides in the air/water interface. Such parameters as CMC, surface tension at the CMC point (σCMC), effectiveness (πCMC), and efficiency (pC20) were measured. Emulsifying properties of all lipopeptides were also examined. The studies reveal that the surface active properties of synthesized compounds strongly depend on the length of alkyl chains as well as on the composition of amino acid polar heads. The critical micelle concentration decreases with increasing alkyl chain length of lipopeptides with the same polar head. The effectiveness and efficiency decrease when the number of amino acids in the polar head increases. All lipopeptides established a very weak emulsification power and created unstable water/Miglyol 812 and water/paraffin oil emulsions. Results suggest that lipopeptides cannot be used as emulsifiers; nonetheless, it is possible to use them as auxiliary surfactants with disinfectant properties in combination with more potent emulsifiers.

Abstract
Multifarious applications of Bacillus licheniformis VS16-derived biosurfactant were explored. Labeo rohita fingerlings were injected intraperitoneally with 0.1 mL of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) containing purified biosurfactant at 0 (control), 55 (S55), 110 (S110), 220 (S220), or 330 (S330) μg mL-1 concentrations. Various immunological parameters and the expression of immune-related genes were measured at 7, 14, and 21 days post-administration (dpa). At 21 dpa, fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila and mortality was recorded for 14 days. Immune parameters such as lysozyme levels (39.29 ± 2.14 U mL-1), alternative complement pathway (61.21 ± 2.38 U mL-1), and phagocytic activities (33.37 ± 1.2%) were maximum (P < 0.05) in the S220 group at 14 dpa; but immunoglobulin levels (11.07 ± 0.83 mg mL-1) were highest in the S220 group at 7 dpa, compared to that in controls. Activities of digestive enzymes (amylase, protease, and lipase) were higher (P < 0.05) in the S220 and S330 groups than in the control group. Regarding cytokine gene expression, pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-1β) were down-regulated (P < 0.05) in the S220 and S330 groups. Expression of IL-10, TGF-β, and IKB-α were up-regulated in the S220 and S330 groups at 14 dpa, with the highest levels in the S220 group. The expression of NF-κB p65 and IKK-β were down-regulated in treatment groups, and were lowest (P < 0.05) in the S220 group. The highest post-challenge survival rate (72.7%) was recorded in S220 group. Further, the potential of this substance to inhibit biofilm formation, and heavy metal removal from vegetables were also evaluated. Biosurfactant was effective in inhibiting biofilm formation up to 54.71 ± 1.27%. Moreover, it efficiently removed cadmium (Cd) from tested vegetables such as carrot, radish, ginger, and potato, with the highest removal efficiency (60.98 ± 1.29%) recorded in ginger contaminated with Cd. Collectively, these results suggest that isolated biosurfactant could be used in the aquaculture industry, in addition to its potential application to the food industry.

Abstract
In this work, the biodegradation of the crude oil by the potential biosurfactant producing Bacillus subtilis A1 was investigated. The isolate had the ability to synthesize degradative enzymes such as alkane hydroxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase at the time of biodegradation of hydrocarbon. The biosurfactant producing conditions were optimized as pH 7.0, temperature 40°C, 2% sucrose and 3% of yeast extract as best carbon and nitrogen sources for maximum production of biosurfactant (4.85 g l-1). Specifically, the low molecular weight compounds, i.e., C10-C14 were completely degraded, while C15-C19 were degraded up to 97% from the total hydrocarbon pools. Overall crude oil degradation efficiency of the strain A1 was about 87% within a short period of time (7 days). The accumulated biosurfactant from the biodegradation medium was characterized to be lipopeptide in nature. The strain A1 was found to be more robust than other reported biosurfactant producing bacteria in degradation efficiency of crude oil due to their enzyme production capability and therefore can be used to remove the hydrocarbon pollutants from contaminated environment.

Abstract
The lipopeptide and its homologues are a kind of the five major biosurfactants with prominent interfacial and biological activities. A suite of mutagenesis method was adopted to expose a wild lipopeptide-producing strain Bacillus subtilis HSO121 to improve lipopeptide yield, and a stable mutant named R2-104 with a 2.0-fold production of lipopeptide was obtained. Compared to that of the wild strain HSO121, the lipopeptide produced by R2-104 showed a similar surface activity, but the course profiles of lipopeptide production during cultivation were different, with the peak yield of 500 mg at about 9 h by R2-104, and 400 mg at about 5 h by HSO121. The constituent abundance of the lipopeptide homologues produced by R2-104 was also different from that by HSO121. Combined methods of ESI-MS, GC-MS and MS-MS were applied for structural characterization of lipopeptide homologues, and it showed that the lipopeptides produced by R2-104 and HSO121 were attributed to a surfactin family with different constituents. The dominant constituent of the surfactin family produced by R2-104 was anteiso C15-surfactin with a relative content of 43.8 %, while the dominant one produced by HSO121was iso C14-surfactin with a relative content of 33.1 %.
