Treatment of low carbon-to-nitrogen wastewater using two-stage sequencing batch reactor with independent nitrification

Enhanced denitrification by graphene oxide-modified cathode for the secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plants in three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors

In this study, a novel three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactor (3D-BER) with a graphene oxide (GO)-modified cathode was developed to enhance the denitrification performance of secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plants (SEWTPs). The effects of different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and currents on the 3D-BER were explored. The results indicated that at the optimal HRT of 4 h and current of 350 mA/m2, the 3D-BER with GO-modified cathode had a higher denitrification rate (2.40 ± 0.1 mg TN/L/h) and less accumulation of intermediate products, especially with 3.34% total nitrogen (TN) molar conversion to N2O. The GO-modified cathode offered a large biocompatible specific surface area and enhanced the conductivity, which favored microbial growth and increased electron transfer efficiency and extracellular enzyme activities. Moreover, the activity of nitrite reductase increased more than that of nitrate reductase to accelerate nitrite reduction, thus facilitating the denitrification process. The proposed 3D-BER provided an effective solution to elevate tertiary denitrification in the SEWTP.

Application of Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode for treating high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater

Electro-catalytic technology is a promising approach for wastewater treatment, owing to its easy operation, minimal generation of secondary pollution, small foot-print and rapid start-up. In this work, the chlorine evolution potential of the Pd-Sn modified ruthenium(Ru)-iridium(Ir) electrode was investigated for the electro-catalytic treatment of high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater. The effect of reaction conditions on the removal of ammonia-nitrogen, kinetics and apparent activation energy of ammonia-nitrogen removal were studied. The possible denitrification process of high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater was discussed. The results indicated that the chlorine evolution potential of the Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode was 1.0956 V(vs. SCE). The electro-catalytic treatment of high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen conformed to zero-order kinetic law, and the apparent activation energy of removal process was 14.089 kJ/mol. With a current was 0.5 A, the removal efficiency of ammonia-nitrogen could achieve 100% at a reaction time of 40 min. Indirect oxidation played an essential role in the electro-catalytic ammonia-nitrogen removal using the Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode. This paper demonstrated that the electro-catalytic technology was a promising approach for efficiently treating the high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater.

Exploring nutrient removal mechanisms in column-type SBR with simultaneous nitrification and denitrification

A comprehensive investigation utilized a column-type sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to efficiently remove nutrients throughout various phases of its operational cycle by forming granules. This study assessed the influence and mechanisms of a simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) system employing a column-type sequential batch reactor (SBR). The primary focus was on elucidating the functional groups involved in nitrogen transformation and removal within the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The research findings demonstrate the superior performance of the SBR process compared to the control group. It achieved an impressive SND efficiency of 69%, resulting in a remarkable 66% total nitrogen removal. Furthermore, a detailed analysis unveiled that the SBR process had a beneficial impact on the composition and properties of EPS. This impact was observed through increased EPS content and enhanced capacity to transport, convert, and retain nitrogen effectively. Additionally, after initial acclimatization, the SBR process showed its effectiveness in removing nutrients (88-98%) and COD (93%) from the generated wastewater within a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h. A statistically significant difference between the treatments for the investigated mixing ratios was found by univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA). Machine learning (CatBoost model) was employed to understand each parameter's relationship and predict the outcomes in measurable quantity. The findings of the SBR trials showed that the concentration of generated wastewater and the HRT impacted the treatment efficiency. However, the effluent may still need other physicochemical processes, such as membrane filtering, coagulation, electrocoagulation, etc., as post-treatment options, even though COD, nutrients, and turbidity have been entirely or significantly effectively removed. Overall, this work offers insightful information on the critical function of the SBR bacterial community in promoting SND.

Suitability of SBR for Wastewater Treatment and Reuse: Pilot-Scale Reactor Operated in Different Anoxic Conditions

The present study investigates the performance of a pilot-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) process for the treatment of wastewater quality parameters, including turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), total solids (TS), nitrogen (ammonia (NH₃-N), nitrite (NO₂^-), and nitrate (NO₃^-), phosphate (PO₄^3-), the chemical oxygen demand (COD), and the 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD₅), from municipal wastewater. Two scenarios, namely, pre-anoxic denitrification and post-anoxic denitrification, were investigated to examine the performance of a pilot-scale SBR on the wastewater quality parameters, particularly the nitrogen removal. The correlation statistic was applied to explain the effects of operational parameters on the performance of the SBR system. The results revealed that the post-anoxic denitrification scenario was more efficient for higher qualify effluent than the first scenario. The effluent concentrations of the targeted wastewater quality parameters obtained for the proposed SBR system were below those of the local standards, while its performance was better than that of the North Sewage Treatment Plant, Dharan, Eastern province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), in terms of the BOD₅, COD, TN, and PO₄^3- treatment efficiencies. These results indicated the suitability of SBR technology for wastewater treatment in remote areas in the KSA, with a high potential of reusability for sustainable wastewater management.

Treatment of turtle aquaculture effluent by an improved multi-soil-layer system

Concentrated turtle aquaculture effluent poses an environmental threat to water bodies, and therefore needs to be treated prior to disposal. This study was conducted to assess the effect of multi-soil-layer (MSL) systems treating turtle aquaculture effluent with adding different amounts of sludge. Four MSL systems were constructed with dry weight ratios of sludge with 0%, 5%, 10%, and 20% (MSL 1, MSL 2, MSL 3, and MSL 4, respectively). The turtle aquaculture effluent had an average chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4(+)-N) and total nitrogen (TN) concentration of 288.4, 213.4, and 252.0 mg/L, respectively. The COD/TN (C/N) ratio was 1.2. The results showed that the four MSL systems could effectively treat the COD, NH4(+)-N, and TN, and MSL 4 showed significantly improved NH4(+)-N removal efficiency, suggesting the potential of sludge addition to improve the turtle aquaculture effluent treatment. The average COD, TN, and NH4(+)-N removal efficiencies of MSL 4 were 70.3%, 66.5%, and 72.7%, respectively. To further interpret the contribution of microorganisms to the removal, the microbial community compositions and diversities of the four MSL systems were measured. Comparisons of the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profiles revealed that the amount of nitrifying bacteria and diversity in MSL 4 were higher than those in the other three systems. We concluded that adding 20% of sludge improved the NH4(+)-N removal and stability of the system for nitrification, due to the enrichment of the nitrifying bacteria in MSL 4.

Performance evaluation of enhanced SBR in simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorous

BACKGROUND

Simultaneous nitrogen, phosphorous and COD removal in a pilot-scale enhanced Sequencing Batch Reactor (eSBR) was investigated.

METHODS

The reactor consisted of a pre-anoxic zone and internal recycle and was fed with synthetic wastewater. The study was performed by operating the reactor in 6-hour cycles in three different operational modes during a time frame of 279 days.

RESULTS

Under the best operational conditions, the average removal rate of COD, TN, and TP were obtained as 93.52, 88.31, and 97.56%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

A significant denitrifying phosphorus removal (more than 80%) occurred at run1 and 3 which started the cycle under anoxic condition.

Nitrogen removal in a SBR operated with and without pre-denitrification: effect of the carbon:nitrogen ratio and the cycle time

The effects of cycle time (CT) (8, 12 and 16h) and C/N ratio (3, 6 and 9) on nitrogen removal efficiencies in a bench top sequencing batch reactor treating slaughterhouse wastewater were investigated under different operating conditions: in condition 1, the reaction comprises an aerobic/anoxic phase and in condition II, the reaction comprises anoxic I/aerobic/anoxic II phases (with pre-denitrification). The greatest percentages of nitrogen removal were obtained in the CT range from 12 to 16 h and C/N ratios from 3 to 6, with mean efficiency values of 80.76% and 85.57% in condition I and 90.99% and 91.09% in condition II. Although condition II gave a higher removal of total inorganic nitrogen (NH4+ - N + NO2- - N + NO3- - N) than condition I, only condition I showed statistically significant and predictive regression for all the steps of nitrogen removal.

Synthesis of nano-zeolite from coal fly ash and its potential for nutrient sequestration from anaerobically digested swine wastewater

The treatment of anaerobically digested swine wastewater (ADSW) is problematic due to its high nutrient concentration. This study investigated the simultaneous sequestration of ammonium (N) and phosphate (P) from ADSW using nano-zeolites synthesized from fly ash (ZFA). The nanometer-scale crystalline structures plentiful of zeolite-NaP1 coating on ZFA particle increased the levels of specific surface area and cation exchange capacity at times of 40 and 104, compared to raw fly ash. Kinetic N and P sorption experiments with ZFA were well described by both the Langmuir and Freundlich models, suggesting the co-existence of homogeneous and heterogeneous sorption mechanisms. N and P removal efficiencies ranged from 41% to 95% and 75% to 98%, respectively, across a range of ZFA doses (from 0.25 to 8g/100ml). Collectively, application of the laboratory-synthesized ZFA can alleviate the nutrient loads in ADSW and therefore modify the ratio of N:P in wastewater beneficial for subsequent biological treatment.

Performance of down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor coupled with up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for treatment of onion dehydration wastewater

In this study, a promising system consisting of up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor followed by down-flow hanging sponge (DHS) reactor was investigated for onion dehydration wastewater treatment. Laboratory experiments were conducted at two different phases, i.e., phase (1) at overall hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 11h (UASB reactor: 6h and DHS reactor: 5h) and phase (2) at overall HRT of 9.4h (UASB reactor: 5.2h and DHS reactor: 4.2h). Long-term operation results of the proposed system showed that its overall TCOD, TBOD, TSS, TKN and NH(4)-N removal efficiencies were 92 ± 5, 95 ± 2, 95 ± 2, 72 ± 6 and 99 ± 1.3%, respectively (phase 1). Corresponding values for the 2nd phase were 85.4 ± 5, 86 ± 3, 87 ± 6, 65 ± 8 and 95 ± 2.8%. Based on the available results, the proposed system could be more viable option for treatment of wastewater generated from onion dehydration industry in regions with tropical or sub-tropical climates and with stringent discharge standards.

Enhanced nutrient removal in three types of step feeding process from municipal wastewater

An anoxic/oxic step feeding process was improved to enhance nutrient removal by reconfiguring the process into (1) anaerobic/anoxic/oxic step feeding process or (2) modified University of Capetown (UCT) step feeding process. Enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal and optimized organics utilization were obtained simultaneously in the modified UCT type with both internal and sludge recycle ratios of 75% as well as anaerobic/anoxic/oxic volume ratio of 1:3:6. Specifically, the UCT configuration and optimized operational conditions lead to the enrichment of denitrifying phosphorus removal microorganisms and achieved improved anaerobic P-release and anoxic P-uptake activities, which were beneficial to the denitrifying phosphorus removal activities and removal efficiencies. Due to high mixed liquor suspended solid and uneven distributed dissolved oxygen, 35% of total nitrogen was eliminated through simultaneous nitrification and denitrification process in aerobic zones. Moreover, 62 ± 6% of influent chemical oxygen demands was involved in the denitrification or phosphorus release processes.

Evaluation of pilot-scale modified A2O processes for the removal of nitrogen compounds from sewage

In this study, pilot-scale experiments for the removal of nitrogen from sewage obtained from a county Y sewer system were performed using modified A(2)O processes. Using this approach, the total amount of nitrogen discharged during denitrification of the influent was average 38.6 mg/L and a level of average 10.8 mg/L was maintained throughout the denitrification process, which resulted in an average removal efficiency that was greater than 72%. The nitrogen components in the effluent water consisted of 22% ammonia nitrogen, 6% nitrite nitrogen and 72% nitrate nitrogen, reaching a nitrification efficiency of 94%. In conclusion, since these advanced treatment methods, which involve modified A(2)O processes, were successfully employed to remove nitrogen from sewage discharge, they hold promise for wide spread use by treatment plants.

Long term operation of pilot-scale biological nutrient removal process in treating municipal wastewater

The performance of a pilot-scale biological nutrient removal process has been evaluated for 336 days, receiving the real municipal wastewater with a flowrate of 6.8m(3)/d. The process incorporated an intermittent aeration reactor for enhancing the effluent quality, and a nitrification reactor packed with the porous polyurethane foam media for supporting the attached-growth of microorganism responsible for nitrification. The observation shows that the process enabled a relatively stable and high performance in both organics and nutrient removals. When the SRT was maintained at 12 days, COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus removals averaged as high as 89% at a loading rate of 0.42-3.95 kg COD/m(3)d (corresponding to average influent concentration of 304 mg COD/L), 76% at the loading rate of 0.03-0.27 kg N/m(3)d (with 37.1mg TN/L on average), and 95% at the loading rate of 0.01-0.07 kg TP/m(3)d (with 5.4 mg TP/L on average), respectively.
