Effect of Dietary Simulating Solvents on the CAD-CAM Provisional Restorative Materials' Microhardness and Color Stability Properties: An in vitro Study

Purpose

This in vitro study investigated the effects of dietary solvents on the microhardness and color stability of CAD/CAM provisional restorations compared to conventional materials.

Methods

Disc-shaped specimens (n=200) were fabricated from self-cured acrylic resin, two 3D-printing resins (FormLabs, NextDent), and a milled material (TelioCAD). Randomization assigned specimens (n=10/group) to immersion solutions: artificial saliva, citric acid, heptane, coffee, and tea. Microhardness and color stability were evaluated. One-way and three-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test analyzed the data.

Results

Dietary solvents significantly reduced the surface microhardness of all tested materials (p<0.05). Unpolished surfaces exhibited greater color changes compared to polished ones (p<0.05) across all materials. Coffee and tea induced the most substantial reductions in hardness and the most significant color alterations (p<0.05), whereas saliva and citric acid had minimal effects.

Conclusion

Milled provisional restorations exhibited superior hardness and color stability. Dietary solvents significantly affected material properties over time, highlighting the importance of material selection for clinical applications.

Influence of Post-Curing in Nitrogen-Saturated Condition on the Degree of Conversion and Color Stability of 3D-Printed Resin Crowns

Post-curing is the process of applying extra light to complete the polymerization process of 3D printing. The mechanical properties of light-cured three-dimensional (3D) printed resin can be improved by decreasing the oxygen concentrations during post-curing, and nitrogen-saturated post-curing has been applied for this purpose. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the color stability of 3D-printed resin crowns that were post-cured in both normal air and nitrogen-saturated conditions. Crowns were fabricated with a 3D printer and post-cured in normal air (control group; air) or nitrogen-saturated conditions (experimental group; nitrogen). The specimens in each group were subdivided into four subgroups, each exposed to different discoloration agents: distilled water, coffee, wine, and curry. Post-immersion color changes were measured using a digital spectrophotometer and analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy evaluated the degree of conversion of resin over immersion times for both post-curing conditions. Upon comparing the effects of post-curing conditions, a significant difference between the control and experimental groups in terms of immersion time in the wine and curry subgroups was found. FT-IR analysis showed a significant difference in the degree of conversion between the air and nitrogen groups from 10 to 300 s. These findings suggest that nitrogen-saturated post-curing can potentially enhance the conversion rate of 3D-printed resin crowns, thereby improving their color stability.

Effect of smokeless tobacco on color stability and surface roughness of CAD/CAM milled, 3D printed, and conventional provisional crown and fixed dental prosthesis materials: An in vitro study

BACKGROUND

Provisional fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) plays an important role during fixed prosthodontic therapy till the definitive. Discoloration of materials used for provisional FDPs can cause patient dissatisfaction and may create doubt about the color stability of the definitive FDP. Surface roughness is the other major property to be taken into consideration for provisional FDP materials. Smokeless tobacco is reported to affect the color stability and surface roughness of different prosthetic materials.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of two types of smokeless tobacco (black and white) on color stability and surface roughness of 3D printed, CAD/CAM milled, and conventional provisional FDP resin materials.

METHODS

A total of 144 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated using four techniques CAD/CAM subtractive technique (milling), CAD/CAM additive technique (3D Printing), and conventional technique using autopolymerized PMMA, and autopolymerized Bis-acrylic resins. Each group was subdivided into three subgroups of twelve specimens each, and were submerged into three solutions (artificial salivary substitute, black smokeless tobacco, white smokeless tobacco). The change in color and surface roughness was evaluated and the data collected were statistically analyzed.

RESULTS

It was observed that black smokeless tobacco caused the maximum color change and the effect was highest in autopolymerized PMMA resin specimens (ΔE = 9.343 ± 0.489), followed by 3D printed (ΔE = 7.187 ± 0.391), autopolymerized Bis-acryl (ΔE = 6.464 ± 0.453) and milled (ΔE = 4.978 ± 0.227). White smokeless tobacco was found to cause a maximum change in surface roughness and the effect was highest in autopolymerized Bis-acryl specimens (ΔRa = 0.321 ± 0.015 μm), followed by autopolymerized PMMA (ΔRa = 0.297± 0.015 μm), 3D printed (ΔRa = 0.191 ± 0.019 μm), and milled (ΔRa = 0.168 ± 0.014 μm). Statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) differences were observed among all techniques and solutions.

CONCLUSIONS

The change in color and surface roughness were maximum in the case of FDPs prepared using autopolymerizing resins, followed by 3D printed, and CAD/CAM milled reins.

Biocompatibility and biofilm formation on conventional and CAD/CAM provisional implant restorations

Dental implant treatment is a complex and sophisticated process, and implant provisional restorations play a vital role in ensuring its success. The advent of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has revolutionized the field of implant restorations by providing improved precision leading to a reduction in chair time and more predictable treatment outcomes. This technology offers a promising solution to the drawbacks of conventional methods and has the potential to transform the way implant procedures are approached. Despite the clear advantages of CAD/CAM over conventional provisional implant restorations including higher accuracy of fit and superior mechanical properties, little research has been conducted on the biological aspect of these novel restorations. This study aims to fill that gap, comprehensively assessing the biocompatibility, gingival tissue attachment and biofilm formation of a range of provisional implant restorations using CAD/CAM technology through milling and 3-D printing processes compared to conventional fabrication. The biocompatibility of the tested restorations was assessed by MTT assay, Calcein-AM assay as well as SEM analysis. The surface roughness of the tested samples was evaluated, alongside the attachment of Human Gingival Fibroblasts (HGF) cells as well as biofilm formation, and estimated Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) cell count from DNA detection.The results showed all tested provisional implant restorations were non-toxic and good HGF cell attachment but differed in their quantity of biofilm formation, with surface texture influenced by the material and fabrication technique, playing a role. Within the limitation of this study, the findings suggest that CAD/CAM-fabricated provisional implant restorations using a milling technique may be the most favourable among tested groups in terms of biocompatibility and periodontal-related biofilm formation.

Evaluating the color stability of 3D-printed resins against various solutions

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different solutions on the optical behavior of two types of 3D-printed resin (Detax and Asiga). The samples were randomly divided into 4 groups of cola, orange juice, tea and artificial saliva (control group) in the form of 14 x 10 mm blocks with a thickness of 1.5 ± 0.3 mm (10 samples in each group). By spectrophotometric device, the color of the examined samples was recorded in the CIE system and in three parameters *L (brightness), a* (red-green) and b* (blue-yellow) as the initial record. The color difference of the samples was recorded on 7 and 30 days after immersion as a secondary record. After that, using the formula, the color difference (ΔE) were calculated. T-test also was used to analyze the data. There was no significant difference between the amount of ΔE on 7th and 30th days after exposure to artificial saliva and cola and on 7th days after exposure to orange juice and tea. But on the 30th day, a significant difference was found in orange juice and tea drinks (p<0.05), so that the value of ΔE in Asiga printer was lower than Detax. ΔE changes in orange juice solution were more than other drinks. On the 30th day of immersion in tea drinks and orange juice, Asiga printer had significantly less color difference than Detax printer.

Flexural strength, surface roughness, micro-CT analysis, and microbiological adhesion of a 3D-printed temporary crown material

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the thermocycling effect of 3D-printed resins on flexural strength, surface roughness, microbiological adhesion, and porosity.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

150 bars (8 × 2 × 2 mm) and 100 blocks (8 × 8 × 2 mm) were made and divided into 5 groups, according to two factors: "material" (AR: acrylic resin, CR: composite resin, BIS: bis-acryl resin, CAD: CAD/CAM resin, and PRINT: 3D-printed resin) and "aging" (non-aged and aged - TC). Half of them were subjected to thermocycling (10,000 cycles). The bars were subjected to mini-flexural strength (σ) test (1 mm/min). All the blocks were subjected to roughness analysis (Ra/Rq/Rz). The non-aged blocks were subjected to porosity analysis (micro-CT; n = 5) and fungal adherence (n = 10). Data were statistically analyzed (one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA; Tukey's test, α = 0.05).

RESULTS

For σ, "material" and "aging" factors were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The BIS (118.23 ± 16.26A) presented a higher σ and the PRINT group (49.87 ± 7.55E) had the lowest mean σ. All groups showed a decrease in σ after TC, except for PRINT. The CRTC showed the lowest Weibull modulus. The AR showed higher roughness than BIS. Porosity revealed that the AR (1.369%) and BIS (6.339%) presented the highest porosity, and the CAD (0.002%) had the lowest porosity. Cell adhesion was significantly different between the CR (6.81) and CAD (6.37).

CONCLUSION

Thermocycling reduced the flexural strength of most provisional materials, except for 3D-printed resin. However, it did not influence the surface roughness. The CR showed higher microbiological adherence than CAD group. The BIS group reached the highest porosity while the CAD group had the lowest values.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

3D-printed resins are promising materials for clinical applications because they have good mechanical properties and low fungal adhesion.

Effects of Smokeless Tobacco on Color Stability and Surface Roughness of 3D-Printed, CAD/CAM-Milled, and Conventional Denture Base Materials: An In Vitro Study

Tobacco consumption in its different forms can affect the optical and surface properties of dental materials that are used in the oral cavity. Thus, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of two commercially available smokeless tobacco products on the color stability and surface roughness of denture base resins that were fabricated using three different techniques (CAD/CAM milling, 3D printing, and conventional heat polymerization). A total of 126 denture base resin specimens were fabricated using the three different manufacturing techniques (n = 42 each). Specimens from each group were further subdivided into three subgroups (n = 14 each) and immersed in three different immersion media (a khaini suspension, a tabbaq suspension, and artificial saliva). The differences in color and surface roughness were assessed according to data that were collected and statistically analyzed using SPSS version 24.0. The tabbaq smokeless tobacco was found to cause greatest changes in color and surface roughness; the effect was observed to be highest in the 3D-printed specimens followed by the conventional heat-polymerized and CAD/CAM milled specimens. The mean changes in color and surface roughness were the highest for the tabbaq smokeless tobacco followed by the khaini smokeless tobacco and the artificial saliva. Statistically significant (p-value < 0.05) differences were observed among all techniques and suspensions. We concluded that the mean changes in color and surface roughness were significantly higher for the 3D-printed dentures compared to the conventional heat-polymerized and CAD/CAM-milled dentures. Thus, the results of the present study strengthened the concept that tobacco in any form can lead to changes in the color and surface roughness of denture base materials.

Influences of Toothbrushing and Different Toothpastes on the Surface Roughness and Color Stability of Interim Prosthodontic Materials

The surface properties and color stability of interim crown materials may vary depending on the toothbrushing procedure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of toothbrushing and different toothpastes on the surface roughness (Ra) and color stability of different interim crown materials. Disc-shaped specimens were prepared from four interim crown materials (Tab 2000 (ChPM), Imident (LaPM), Protemp 4 (ChDM), and Telio-CAD (CadPM)). Specimens were divided into four subgroups for the control group (Cnt) and for simulated toothbrushing with distilled water (Dw) or with two different toothpastes (whitening toothpaste (WTp), activated charcoal toothpaste (ACTp)). The specimens’ Ra values were measured before and after 10,000 cycles of toothbrushing. The color parameters were measured and the color differences (ΔE00) were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s HSD tests. A significant increase in the Ra values was observed after toothbrushing, except for the LaPM_Dw, ChDM_Dw, and all the CadPM specimens (p < 0.05). Toothbrushing with toothpastes increased the ΔE00 values of all ChPM and ChDM interim materials (p < 0.05). Before and after all toothbrushing procedures, the CadPM specimens had smoother and ChPM specimens had rougher surfaces than the other interim materials. The two tested toothpastes had similar effects on the Ra of all interim materials. Non-perceivable color changes were seen only with the CadPM_Dw group.

Effects of long-term cinnamaldehyde immersion on the surface roughness and color of heat-polymerized denture base resin

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Cinnamaldehyde has been successfully used for the short-term disinfection of dentures; however, its long-term effects on the surface and color properties of denture base materials remain unknown.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of simulated immersion in cinnamaldehyde for up to 5 years on the surface roughness and color parameters of a heat-polymerized denture resin.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Eighty Ø10×5-mm disk-shaped specimens were prepared from microwave heat-polymerized polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and immersed in 4 solutions (n=20): TW-tap water (control), SH - 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, PX-alkaline peroxide, and CA-cinnamaldehyde (27 μg/mL). The immersion protocol simulated 104 cycles (3.5 months), 913 cycles (2.5 years), and 1825 immersion cycles (5 years) of a daily immersion cleaning protocol, with immersion times ranging from 10 to 20-minutes. Surface roughness (Sa) and the color parameters of CIELab (L∗ a∗ b∗, ΔEab), CIEDE2000 (ΔE00), and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) were analyzed at baseline (t=0) and after the immersion cycles. The data were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures and the Tukey post hoc test (α=.01).

RESULTS

Sa was significantly increased in all groups after 1825 cycles compared with baseline (P<.01), regardless of the solution. Only the time factor significantly affected ΔEab, ΔE00, and NBS parameters, which were below the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. After a simulated 5-year immersion, the surface roughness and color values of CA-treated specimens were not statistically different from those of the other groups (P>.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Cinnamaldehyde solution (27 μg/mL) produced minor effects on the surface roughness and color parameters of a heat-polymerized denture base resin similar to those of 0.5% sodium hypochlorite and alkaline peroxide after a 5-year simulated immersion.

Surface roughness and Streptococcus mutans adhesion on surface sealant agent coupled interim crown materials after dynamic loading

Background

With the application of surface sealant agents, smooth surfaces can be achieved in a shorter time when compared with conventional polishing. However, studies on the performance of these agents against chewing forces are not many. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness and Streptococcus mutans adhesion on surface sealent coupled interim prosthetic materials after chewing simulation.

Methods

One hundred and twelve specimens were fabricated from two poly(methyl methacrylate) (Tab 2000, Dentalon Plus) and two bis-acryl (Tempofit, Protemp 4) interim crown materials and divided into 4 groups (n = 7) according to applied surface treatment: conventional polishing (control) and 3 surface sealant (Palaseal, Optiglaze, Biscover) coupling methods. The surface roughness values (R_a) were measured with a profilometer before (Ra0) and after aging through dynamic loading in a multifunctional chewing simulator for 10,000 cycles at 50 N load combined with integral thermocycling (between 5 and 55 °C) (Ra1). Specimens were incubated with Streptococcus mutans suspension and the total number of adherent bacteria was calculated by multiplying the counted bacterial colonies with the dilution coefficient.

Results

Surface sealant agent application significantly decreased the surface roughness compared with conventionally polished specimens, except for Optiglaze or BisCover LV applied Protemp 4 and Palaseal or Biscover LV applied Tempofit. Surface roughness after dynamic loading showed a statistically significant increase in all groups, except for the control groups of Tab 2000 and Protemp 4. A positive correlation was found between surface roughness values of interim prosthodontic materials and the quantitiy of Streptococcus Mutans.

Conclusions

Even though surface sealant agent application significantly decreased the surface roughness compared with conventionally polished specimens, dynamic loading significantly increased the surface roughness of all surface sealant coupled materials. The R_a values of all test groups were higher than the plaque accumulation threshold (0.20 µm). Streptococcus mutans adhered more on rougher surfaces.

Physical and Mechanical Properties of 3D-Printed Provisional Crowns and Fixed Dental Prosthesis Resins Compared to CAD/CAM Milled and Conventional Provisional Resins: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Newly introduced provisional crowns and fixed dental prostheses (FDP) materials should exhibit good physical and mechanical properties necessary to serve the purpose of their fabrication. The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the articles comparing the physical and mechanical properties of 3D-printed provisional crown and FDP resin materials with CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Designing/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) milled and conventional provisional resins. Indexed English literature up to April 2022 was systematically searched for articles using the following electronic databases: MEDLINE-PubMed, Web of Science (core collection), Scopus, and the Cochrane library. This systematic review was structured based on the guidelines given by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). The focused PICO/PECO (Participant, Intervention/exposure, Comparison, Outcome) question was: ‘Do 3D-printed (P) provisional crowns and FDPs (I) have similar physical and mechanical properties (O) when compared to CAD/CAM milled and other conventionally fabricated ones (C)’. Out of eight hundred and ninety-six titles, which were recognized after a primary search, twenty-five articles were included in the qualitative analysis, and their quality analysis was performed using the modified CONSORT scale. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies, only twelve articles were included for quantitative analysis. Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that 3D-printed provisional crown and FDP resin materials have superior mechanical properties but inferior physical properties compared to CAD/CAM milled and other conventionally fabricated ones. Three-dimensionally printed provisional crowns and FDP materials can be used as an alternative to conventional and CAD/CAM milled long-term provisional materials.

Optical Behavior and Surface Analysis of Dental Resin Matrix Ceramics Related to Thermocycling and Finishing

Color preservation of esthetic dental restorative materials in the oral environment represents, besides longevity, a concern, and there is still limited knowledge related to the effect of aging on the optical behavior of resin matrix ceramics. The study analyzed the finishing and thermocycling of resin matrix ceramic material surfaces, in order to assess their consequences on optical properties. Five resin matrix CAD/CAM ceramics, namely a polymer-infiltrated ceramic and four types of nanoparticle-filled resins, were selected for the study, and finished by polishing and glazing. Thermocycling was chosen as the in vitro aging method. Surface microroughness, optical and hardness evaluations were achieved before and after artificial aging. Statistical analyses were performed with IBM SPSS Statistics software at a significance value of p < 0.05. Micro-roughness values increased after thermocycling, but were kept under the clinically accepted values. The optical characteristics of resin matrix ceramics were not significantly modified by thermocycling. Values of the glazed samples became closer to those of the polished ones, after hydrothermal aging, even if the differences were insignificant. Thermocycling significantly decreased the microhardness, mainly for glazed samples. This could be the consequence of glaze removal during thermocycling, which means that glazes provide a surface protection for a limited time.

Surface Characterisation of Dental Resin Composites Related to Conditioning and Finishing

Due to the little information related to surface processing and conditioning of resin matrix ceramic materials previous glazing, the main purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of different surface treatments on the surface morphology of different resin composite materials. Five types of resin composite CAD-CAM materials: a resin composite ceramic Vita Enamic (E) and four types of nanoparticle-filled resins, like Lava Ultimate (L), Cerasmart (C), Shofu HC (S), Hyramic (H) were taken into consideration. Specimens received the following surface treatment protocols: conventional polishing [p], polishing and glazing [pg], conditioning with CoJet [c], conditioning with CoJet and glazing [cg], sandblasting [s], sandblasting and glazing [sg], etching [e], etching and glazing [eg]. Surface roughness was analyzed for all samples and nanosurface topographic characterization was made by Atomic Force Microscopy. The highest roughness was registered for sandblasted surfaces [s], followed by tribochemical silica airborne particle abrasion [c], and etching [e]. A very strong correlated conditioning behavior of resin nanoceramic materials, like L, C and S samples was found. The microroughness decreased thus [s] > [c] > [e]. These are moderate correlated with H, and are moderate negative correlated to E, where e is more efficient. Three-dimensional images indicated visible grain boundaries after conditioning, for all materials. After polishing and glazing, surfaces became smoother. For all tested conditioning and finishing methods, surface roughness values were within clinically acceptable limits. Finishing by polishing was proved to be a good choice for all materials taken into consideration, polishing and glazing likewise, excepting Hyramic. For Enamic and Shofu HC sandblasting or tribochemical conditioning and glazing and for Hyramic polishing and glazing are not the best options, related to nanoroughness values. Referring to the nanosurface topography, for Enamic, Cerasmart and Hyramic, glazing would be the method of choice, associated with the adequate conditioning method for each material.

Optical Properties and Color Stability of Dental PEEK Related to Artificial Ageing and Staining

Considering that the processes of PEEK discoloration caused by either intrinsic or extrinsic factors require elucidation, the aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effect of the combined action of ageing and immersing solutions on the optical properties and color stability of PEEK material, related to surface processing (polishing or glazing). (2) Methods: This study aims to determine the influence of different ageing and staining protocols on optical properties, color changes, and surface roughness of a reinforced PEEK material (bioHPP, Bredent, Senden, Germany). For ageing, specimens were submitted to 5000 cycles in a 55 °C bath and a 5 °C bath filled with distilled water. For staining, thermal cycling was performed in a hot coffee bath (55 °C) and a bath filled with distilled water (37 °C) and in a cold juice bath (5 °C) and a bath filled with distilled water (37 °C). Translucency (TP) and opalescence (OP) parameters were determined, the total color change value (ΔΕ*) was calculated, specimens’ surface roughness was analyzed, and statistical analyses were performed. (3) Results: The mean TP values of the studied samples were in the interval of 1.25–3.60, which is lower than those reported for natural teeth or other aesthetic restoration materials. The OP values of PEEK were registered in the range of 0.27–0.75, being also lower than those of natural teeth or other aesthetic restoration materials. OP has a very strong positive relationship with TP. The mean registered Ra values for all subgroups were below 0.13 µm. Artificial ageing and staining in hot coffee proved to increase the roughness values. (4) Conclusions: The glazing of PEEK has a favorable effect on surface roughness and opalescence, irrespective of the artificial ageing or staining protocols. Artificial ageing damages the color stability and roughness of PEEK, regardless of surface processing, and decreases the translucency and opalescence of glazed surfaces. Immersion in hot coffee leads to perceivable discolorations.

Effect of a continuous mechanical polishing protocol on the color stainability, microhardness, mass, and surface roughness of denture base acrylic resin

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The acrylic resin used in dental prostheses, which is subject to changes in its properties caused by hygiene chemicals, brushing, and colored beverages, can benefit from mechanical polishing methods. However, studies evaluating whether such procedures can be performed continuously without damaging the prosthetic materials are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of a continuous mechanical polishing protocol on the color stainability, surface roughness, microhardness, and mass of a denture base acrylic resin.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The polishing protocol was tested in specimens submitted to one of the following conditions: immersion in coffee (CF) (n=20); toothbrushing (Br, 35 600 cycles in a brushing simulation machine) (n=20); and immersion in 1% sodium hypochlorite (HYP) (n=20). For each condition, half of the specimens were polished (aluminum oxide paste and felt wheel attached to an electric motor, 3000 rpm) at simulated biweekly intervals. Two groups (n=10) of specimens were immersed in distilled water and used as the control for the immersion groups. Thus, the present study consisted of a total of 8 groups (n=80). Before and after simulated periods of 12 and 24 months, surface roughness was evaluated by using a contact profilometer; a spectrophotometer was used to calculate color changes (ΔE₀₀); and a Knoop microdurometer and a precision balance were used to assess microhardness and mass changes. Data were compared by using 2-way mixed ANOVA. The Tukey HSD and Student t tests were used for post hoc analysis (α=.05).

RESULTS

The polishing influenced surface roughness (Br, CF, HYP: P<.001) and color stainability (Br: P=.008; CF: P<.001). Significant increase in roughness was observed for the Br and HYP groups, and the polishing significantly reduced roughness under all experimental conditions. In general, the polishing did not affect the microhardness and caused minimum wear of the acrylic resin. ΔE₀₀ values were above the clinical perceptibility threshold (ΔE₀₀>1.30) for the Br group, exceeding the clinical acceptability threshold for the CF group (ΔE₀₀= 2.51). Polishing reduced ΔE₀₀ in these groups, making values similar to those found in the groups immersed in distilled water. The color in the HYP group was not influenced by polishing.

CONCLUSIONS

In general, the tested polishing protocol reduced the deleterious effects of brushing and contact with 1% sodium hypochlorite and coffee, reducing surface roughness and color change without affecting microhardness and mass in any clinically relevant way.

Alcohol and light-polymerizing glaze effect on the physical and mechanical properties of a bisacrylate composite resin before and after immersion in chlorhexidine gluconate

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The use of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) may damage bisacrylate composite resin interim restorations, but whether they can be protected with an application of alcohol and/or the use of a glaze is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of applying a 70% alcohol solution on the physical and mechanical properties of a bisacrylate composite resin, with and without the application of a light-polymerizing glaze subjected to 0.12% CHX twice a day for 7 days.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Forty specimens of an autopolymerized bisacrylate composite resin were divided into 4 groups (n=10): Group C (without alcohol, without glaze), Group G (without alcohol, with glaze), Group A (with alcohol, without glaze), and Group AG (with alcohol, with glaze). All specimens were submitted to in vitro treatment with 0.12% CHX for 7 days, and tests of color alteration (ΔE₀₀), microhardness, roughness, and surface were performed initially and after treatment. Data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey HSD test (α=.05).

RESULTS

Group A had the lowest mean value of ΔE₀₀ with a significant statistical difference from Group C. The groups with alcohol presented higher microhardness mean values compared with groups without alcohol in both periods of analysis, except for the groups with glaze in the final period. Group C showed higher mean roughness values in comparison with Group A in both periods. Group AG presented higher mean roughness values than Group G. Surface energy values did not vary significantly among groups, except between Groups C and A in the final period.

CONCLUSIONS

The application of alcohol optimized the properties of the autopolymerized bisacrylate composite resin analyzed, with and without the application of glaze. Overall, the use of CHX changed the microhardness and roughness when the glaze was applied.

Surface roughness, plaque accumulation, and cytotoxicity of provisional restorative materials fabricated by different methods

Fabricating method may affect the surface properties and biological characteristics of provisional restorations. This study aimed to evaluate the surface roughness, plaque accumulation, and cytotoxicity of provisional restorative materials fabricated by the conventional, digital subtractive and additive methods. Sixty-six bar-shaped specimens (2×4×10 mm) were fabricated by using provisional restorative materials through the conventional, digital subtractive and additive methods (n = 22 per group). Ten specimens of each group were used for surface roughness and plaque accumulation tests, 10 specimens for cytotoxicity assay, and 2 specimens of each group were used for qualitative assessment by scanning electron microscopy. The Ra (roughness average) and Rz (roughness height) values (μm) were measured via profilometer, and visual inspection was performed through scanning electron microscopy. Plaque accumulation of Streptococcus mutans and cytotoxicity on human gingival fibroblast-like cells were evaluated. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05). Surface roughness, biofilm accumulation and cytotoxicity were significantly different among the groups (P<0.05). Surface roughness was significantly higher in the conventional group (P<0.05); however, the two other groups were not significantly different (P>0.05). Significantly higher bacterial attachment was observed in the additive group than the subtractive (P<0.001) and conventional group (P = 0.025); while, the conventional and subtractive groups were statistically similar (P = 0.111). Regarding the cytotoxicity, the additive group had significantly higher cell viability than the subtractive group (P = 0.006); yet, the conventional group was not significantly different from the additive (P = 0.354) and subtractive group (P = 0.101). Surface roughness was the highest in conventionally cured group; but, the additive group had the most plaque accumulation and lowest cytotoxicity.

Comparison of surface roughness and color stainability of 3-dimensionally printed interim prosthodontic material with conventionally fabricated and CAD-CAM milled materials

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Studies on the surface roughness and color stainability of interim prostheses produced with 3-dimensional-printing technology are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of different surface treatments on the surface roughness and stainability of 3-dimensionally printed, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milled and conventional interim materials.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 320 specimens were fabricated from autopolymerizing polymethyl methacrylate, bis-acryl composite resin, CAD-CAM polymethyl methacrylate resin (milled), and 3-dimensionally printed composite resin (printed) (n=80). A group of each material was divided into 2 groups (n=40) as per the applied surface treatment procedure: conventional polishing (C) or coated with a surface sealant (B). Surface roughness values were measured with a profilometer. Each group of specimens was then divided into 4 subgroups (n=10) and stored for 1 day, 7 days, and 30 days at 37 °C in different solutions: distilled water, cola, coffee, and red wine. Color parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after each storage period, and color differences (CIEDE2000 [ΔE₀₀]) were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed with the Shapiro-Wilk test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Mann-Whitney U test followed by the Friedman test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The highest surface roughness values were determined for the polymethyl methacrylate -C, and the lowest were observed in the printed-B. After 30 days, the highest mean ΔE₀₀ values were observed in polymethyl methacrylate-C for all staining solutions (P=.001). The highest ΔE₀₀ for all materials was observed in the red wine group. Color change increased significantly with storage duration (P=.001).

CONCLUSIONS

All tested materials had a surface roughness higher than the plaque accumulation threshold (0.2 μm). The surface roughness values of coated materials were significantly lower than those of their conventionally polished groups, except for the printed groups. The application of a surface sealant agent significantly decreased the staining of the materials.

Effect of thermocycling on the surface properties of resin-matrix CAD-CAM ceramics after different surface treatments

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of thermocycling on the water contact angle (WCA), surface roughness (SR), and microhardness (MH) of resin-matrix computer-assisted design and computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD-CAM) ceramics after different surface treatments (conventional polishing or 2 different surface sealants).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Two different types of resin-matrix CAD-CAM ceramics; a nanoparticle-filled resin (CeraSmart; CS) and a resin nanoceramic (Lava Ultimate; LU) were tested. Rectangular-shaped plates (1 mm-thick) were divided into 3 groups (n = 8) in terms of surface treatment methods applied: conventional polishing (control) or 2 surface sealants (Optiglaze (OG) and Palaseal (PS)). Scanning electron microscope images ( × 1000 and × 700 magnifications) of each material were taken from 2 additional specimens before surface treatments. After surface treatments, WCAs of deionized water, SR, and MH values of specimens were measured. All specimens were subjected to 5000 thermocycling and measurements were repeated. SR, WCA, and MH data before and after thermocycling were compared by using a 2-way ANOVA (α=.05).

RESULTS

A significant interaction was found between the surface treatment and the material for WCA after thermocycling (P < .001), for SR before thermocycling (P = .014), and for MH both before and after thermocycling (P < .001). SEM images before surface treatments revealed that the surface of CS was mechanically rougher with a more microretentive topography compared with the surface of LU. No significant correlation was found between SR and WCA (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Thermocycling affected the SR, MH, and WCA of all resin-matrix CAD-CAM ceramics.

Evaluation of the Color Stability of 3D-Printed Crown and Bridge Materials against Various Sources of Discoloration: An In Vitro Study

Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing have introduced new materials that can be utilized for dental restorations. Nonetheless, there are limited studies on the color stability of restorations using 3D-printed crowns and bridge resins. Herein, the color stability of conventional computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) blocks and 3D-printing resins was evaluated and assessed for their degrees of discoloration based on material type, colorant types (grape juice, coffee, curry, and distilled water (control group)), and storage duration (2, 7, and 30 days) in the colorants. Water sorption, solubility, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were conducted. A three-way ANOVA analysis showed that all three factors significantly affected the color change of the materials. Notably, the discoloration (ΔE₀₀) was significantly higher in all 3D printing resins (4.74–22.85 over the 30 days) than in CAD/CAM blocks (0.64–4.12 over the 30 days) following immersion in all colorants. 3D-printing resins showed color differences above the clinical limit (2.25) following storage for 7 days or longer in all experimental groups. Curry was the most prominent colorant, and discoloration increased in almost all groups as the storage duration increased. This study suggests that discoloration must be considered when using 3D printing resins for restorations.

Nanofilled bis-acryl composite resin materials: Is it necessary to polish?

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Manufacturers of the recently introduced nanofilled bis-acryl composite resins no longer recommend polishing to produce interim restorations; however, whether this advice is appropriate is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the type of interim resin material, polishing procedure, and artificial staining on surface roughness, gloss, and color.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Disk-shaped specimens were prepared from 1 unfilled acrylic resin (Duralay) and 3 bis-acryl composite resins (Structur 3-nanofilled, Systemp C&B-microhybrid, Proviplast-microhybrid). The specimens of each material were assigned to 2 subgroups (n=15): polished and unpolished. Surface roughness (Ra-μm), gloss (UB), and color (ΔE) were analyzed at baseline and after 14 days of artificial staining. Roughness and gloss data were separately analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and color by 2-way ANOVA, followed by the post hoc Tukey test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The baseline roughness of all materials was significantly reduced by the polishing procedure, whereas the baseline gloss was increased (P<.001). Only the unpolished Proviplast had a significant increase in Ra values after aging. Structur 3 had higher gloss than Systemp C&B and Proviplast. The acrylic resin had the lowest color change after staining.

CONCLUSIONS

The polishing procedure produced smother and glossier surfaces for all the materials tested. The nanofilled bis-acryl composite resin material had higher gloss than the microhybrid bis-acryls tested, but it was not different from the acrylic resin. The 14 days of artificial staining did not promote significant changes in Ra or gloss values, except for Ra in the unpolished Proviplast subgroup, indicating excellent performance of the materials. The acrylic resin had the highest color stability.

Surface Characteristics of Milled and 3D Printed Denture Base Materials Following Polishing and Coating: An In-Vitro Study

(1) Background: To date, no information on the polishability of milled and 3D-printed complete denture bases has been provided, which is relevant in terms of plaque accumulation. (2) Methods: three groups (n = 30) were manufactured using the cold-polymerization polymethilmethacrilate, milling (SM) and 3D printing (AM). 10 specimens of each group were left untreated (reference). 10 more specimens were pre-polished (intermediate polishing) and 10 final specimens were highgloss polished. An additional 20 specimens were 3D printed and coated with the liquid resin (coated), 10 of which were additionally polished (coated + polished). For each group R_a and R_z values, gloss value and REM images were obtained. (3). The “highgloss-polished” specimens showed statistically lower R_a and R_z values in the SM, followed by AM and conventional groups. In the AM group statistically lower surfaces roughness was revealed for highgloss-polished, “coated + polished”, and “coated” specimens, respectively. (4) Conclusions: The milled specimens demonstrated superiors surface characteristics than 3D printed and conventionally produced after polishing. The polished specimens demonstrated superior surface characteristics over coated specimens. However, the surface roughness by both polished and coated specimens was within the clinically relevant threshold of 0.2 µm.

Effect of different beverages and storage period on bis-acryl color stability using two assessment methods

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the color stability (ΔE₀₀ ) of bis-acryl resins after different immersion solutions and storage time by different evaluation methods.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty specimens (n = 30) were prepared from Protemp 4 and Structur 3. The specimens were divided into three groups (n = 10), according to the immersion solution (artificial saliva, cola beverage, and yerba mate tea) and evaluated at two storage times (7 and 14 days). The ΔE₀₀ of each group was calculated using color coordinates obtained by a spectrophotometer and by a digital method, using the CIEDE2000 color difference formula. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The 7-day period presented the lowest ΔE₀₀ values, regardless of the material and solution evaluated for both evaluation methods (ΔE₀₀  < 0.93; ΔE₀₀  < 3.12). The immersion solution with the highest color change was yerba mate tea after 14 days (ΔE₀₀  > 2.11). For digital analyses, all materials and solutions at both times presented ΔE₀₀ values higher than the clinically acceptable (ΔE₀₀  > 1.8), while in spectrophotometer only in yerba mate tea (14 days) Structur was above the clinical acceptability level.

CONCLUSIONS

Yerba mate tea was the immersion solution with a higher color change in both materials and assessment methods. The highest values were found after 14 days of immersion, regardless of the solution. The ΔE₀₀ for the digital method was higher than the spectrophotometer analysis.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

It is important to identify the influence of staining beverages on interim materials used in patients requiring temporary rehabilitation. The use of a spectrophotometer seems to be more accurate than the digital method for the evaluation of color parameters of the tested materials.

Evaluation of surface roughness, hardness and elastic modulus of nanoparticle containing light-polymerized denture glaze materials

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The surface hardness and roughness of different glaze materials for denture base acrylic resins have not been well reported.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the study was to measure the surfaces hardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of 5 different light-polymerized glaze materials for poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base materials.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 210 PMMA resin specimens (10 × 5 × 2 mm) were prepared (30 per group); control group was untreated, group 1 was surface treated with conventional pumice and high shine paste; group 2 to 6 specimens were glaze coated with different commercially available denture glaze materials. 20 specimens out of 30 underwent thermocycling to simulate 6 months and 12 months in vivo. Nanoindentation was performed to measure the surface hardness and elastic modulus. Surface roughness was quantitatively analysed using surface metrology software and qualitatively analysed under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Collected data was statistically analysed using SPSS version 24.

RESULTS

The mean surface hardness of tested specimens ranged from 0.33 ±0.09 GPa to 0.68 ±0.10 GPa. Specimens coated with Optiglaze produced statistically higher surface hardness compared to other groups (P< 0.01). Aging of 6 months and 12 months was found to have no statistical significance for all groups' surface hardness values. For elastic modulus, specimens coated with Nanovarnish produced statistically higher values compared to other groups (P= 0.03). Thermocycling showed no influence on the elastic modulus of specimens. The mean surface roughness of all groups ranged from 0.16 ±0.01 to 0.30 ±0.02 μm with no statistical significance between groups (P= 0.67). However, under SEM analysis, surfaces showed increased roughness over time.

CONCLUSIONS

Statistically significant differences in surface hardness and elastic modulus were found among the different types of surface coated denture acrylic resins. Silica-nanoparticle containing surface coatings produced the highest surface hardness and elastic modulus, however there was no statistical significance found in aging for 6 and 12 months. Contrary to expectations, the surface roughness did not have a significant increase in all groups over time, despite changes observed under SEM.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

This study will contribute to our understanding of surface glazed PMMA acrylic resin denture materials and how it improves the surface strength. This research can help dental clinicians and technicians select the most effective polishing and coating material for the dentures.

Polishing Methods' Influence on Color Stability and Roughness of 2 Provisional Prosthodontic Materials

PURPOSE

To evaluate the roughness and color change of a conventional acrylic resin and a bis-acryl resin, submitted to different types of polishing and exposed to a staining solution.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

One hundred specimens were manufactured from an autopolymerizing conventional acrylic resin (Duralay, shade 66) (n = 50) and a bis-acryl resin (Protemp 4, shade A3) (n = 50) according to the manufacturers' instructions. Specimens were subdivided into 10 groups (n = 10), according to the type of resin and polishing method, including no-polishing (control groups for acrylic resin [tungsten bur finishing] and bis-acryl resin [cotton and alcohol]), Enhance System, Edenta kit, Labordental kit, and sandpaper. The specimens were immersed in a staining solution (coffee at 60°C) for 7 days. Surface roughness was evaluated before the first immersion (baseline - Ra1) and after 7 days (Ra2). The color change (∆E) was determined after 24 hours (∆E1) and 7 days (∆E2), by CIE L^* a^* b^* scale. Data were statistically analyzed with 3-way ANOVA for repeated measures test and Tukey test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

According to 3-way ANOVA test, material, polishing techniques, and polishing*material factors exhibited statistically significant influence (p < 0.0001) on the roughness, and, for color change, material, polishing techniques, time, polishing*material, and material*time factors were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The polishing techniques successfully reduced the surface roughness of acrylic resin groups, when compared to control (p < 0.001), but for bis-acryl resin, results were not different from the control group (Enhance: p = 0.954, Edenta: p = 0.866, sandpaper: p = 0.366, Labordental: p = 0.945). Surface roughness was not affected by the immersion in staining solution for 7 days. Color change of acrylic resin groups after 24 hours and 7 days of immersion exhibited a clinically acceptable value (ΔE < 3.7) with the exception of the Enhance group, and all bis-acryl resin groups exhibited a clinically unacceptable color change value (ΔE > 3.7) independent of polishing technique and time interval (∆E1 and ∆E2).

CONCLUSIONS

Roughness of both materials was similar when the polishing techniques studied were performed, although Ra values were superior to the clinically acceptable values (0.20 µm), and were not affected by the immersion protocol studied; however, when esthetics are critical, the selection of material type is more important than the surface treatment technique used, and bis-acryl resin was more susceptible to clinically unacceptable color change after immersion in a staining solution.

Coloration of provisional restoration materials: a comparison of the effects of mouth rinses and green tea

Purpose

The present study aimed to evaluate the color stability of provisional restorative materials stored in different mouth rinses and green tea extract for 14 days.

Materials and methods

Forty cylinders of fixed provisional restoration material of 15-mm diameter and 2-mm thickness were prepared. The samples were separated into four storage solutions (three different mouth rinses and green tea) (n=10). The values of L*, a*, and b* were determined before and after storage in the solutions using a spectrophotometer, and the ΔE* value was calculated. The effect of mouth rinses and green tea extract on the color change of provisional restoration materials was determined with one-way analyses of variance. The Tamhane multiple comparison analysis was used to determine the differences between the groups (p<0.05).

Results

The color stability of the provisional restoration materials varies depending on the solution. Listerine mouth rinse showed more color change than Sensodyne or Colgate did. Minimal color change was found in the green tea solution.

Conclusion

The effect of mouth rinses on the color stability of fixed temporary restorative materials is remarkable. As green tea shows less color change, it can be suggested as an alternative to mouth rinses.

Color stability of a bis-acryl composite resin subjected to polishing, thermocycling, intercalated baths, and immersion in different beverages

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the color of a bis-acryl resin after polishing, aging, and colorants.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

From the 140 disks obtained, 35 were not polished (NP), 35 were polished with 3-μm (3P), 35 with 3- and 1-μm (1P), and 35 with 3-, 1-, and 0.5-μm sized particles (05P). Five disks of each group were thermocycled for 20, 100, and 200 cycles. Sixty disks were thermocycled and kept in beverages (tea, wine, and coffee) after four cycles. Sixty disks were immersed in the beverages for 24 hours, a week, and a month. The coordinates L*a*b* were measured and the color differences were analyzed by ANOVA. The lightness, chroma, and hue differences were evaluated by repeated measures ANOVA. Comparisons were made with Tukey's test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Similar behaviors were observed between 3P and 05P groups (1.53 and 1.95ΔE₀₀ ) (P < .05). The NP group submitted to 200 cycles showed the biggest color differences (3.02) (P = .003). The greatest color differences were observed in the NP group submitted to immersion in coffee (8.30) and wine (7.93) (P < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

The polished surfaces were the least stained. Coffee and wine provided the greatest color changes, both for baths and immersions.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Polishing of provisional surfaces restorations made of bis-acrylic resin is essential to minimize staining caused by aging and use of colorants, regardless of the particle size present in the polishing paste. The contact with coffee and red wine should be avoided, especially for clinical times greater than 1 week.
