Abstract
OBJECTIVES Bipolar Disorder (BD) is an important psychiatric disease that progresses with attacks, can be chronic and causes serious mental problems. In this study, we aimed to identify the retinal vascular pathologies in BD patients by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging. METHODS Retinal vascular analysis from 35 BD patients and 30 healthy controls (HCs) were scanned using the OCTA machine. In addition, psychometric tests such as the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI-S) were applied to BD patients to assess the severity of the disease and determine the patient's level of functionality. RESULTS As a result of OCTA scans, there were significant differences between the groups as following; Deep retinal vessel density (VD) in the total, parafoveal and perifoveal area, Macular thickness in the inner parafoveal area, VD of retinal capillary plexuses in the inside disk and the Choroidal thickness (p < 0.05). Furthermore, according to the results of Pearson correlation analysis between OCTA scans and YMRS and CGI-S scores, it was determined that there was no significant relationship in any measurement (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION In our study, it was determined that there were general differences in deep retinal vascular density and inner macular thickness in BD patients. These findings demonstrate that the deep and inner zone of the retina is affected in BD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to compare retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness in bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). METHOD The study included thirty MDD, thirty-two BD participants in depressive episode, and thirty-seven controls matched according to age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and smoking status. Optic coherence tomography (OCT) measurements were performed for both participants and controls. The RNFL and GCC thickness were measured and recorded automatically by a spectral OCT device. Participants were also subjected to Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). RESULTS RNFL superior thickness was significantly lower in BD participants, compared to the MDD participants and controls (p = 0.001). GCC inferior (p = 0.022) and inferonasal (p = 0.005) thickness were detected lower in BD group, compared to the control groups. In the BD group, HAM-D scores were negatively correlated with RNFL-temporal (p = 0.049, r= -0.357), GCC inferotemporal (p = 0.02, r= -0.416) and superotemporal thickness (p = 0.002, r= -0.546). CONCLUSIONS RNFL thickness were lower in BD participants compared to the MDD and controls and, GCC thickness were lower in BD participants compared to the controls. Our findings support the hypothesis that neurodegeneration is part of the pathogenesis of BD. Future research are needed to confirm the lack of RNFL thickness in MDD, which could have immediate therapeutic consequences as well as implications for distinguishing BD from MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerebral microvascular dysfunction is a promising area for research into the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Despite the scientific and clinical potential of studying microvascular dysfunction, progress in this area has long been hampered by the lack of methods to study microvessels intravitally. AIMS The aim of the present study was to search for potential optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCTA) biomarkers of BD and MDD. METHODS One hundred and five consecutive patients with a current depressive episode were enrolled in the study (39 - BD and 66 - MDD). In addition, forty-one generally healthy subjects were enrolled as a control group. Only the right eye was examined in all subjects. Structural OCT and OCTA scans with signal strength ≥7 were included. RESULTS Structural OCT measurements showed no significant differences between the groups. OCTA measurements of foveal avascular zone (FAZ), area and skeleton density showed a decrease in the retinal capillary bed in BD patients, whereas OCTA values in MDD patients did not differ from the control group. Several significant differences were found between the BD and control groups. In the BD group, the FAZ of the deep capillary plexus was increased, reflecting a reduction in capillary perfusion in the central subfield of this plexus. CONCLUSIONS OCTA measurements of FAZ, area and skeleton density showed a decrease in the retinal capillary bed in BD patients, whereas OCTA values in MDD patients did not differ from the control group.

Abstract
Substance use is a chronic and recurrent public healthcare concern increasing in the world, causing negative outcomes. Two or more substance use is common among people who have substance use disorders and who receive treatment. For this reason, the present study aimed to measure Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL), Mean Macular Thickness (MMT), Central Macular Thickness (CMT) in patients who have Multiple substance use disorder (MSUD) using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), considering that it will contribute to the literature. Among the inpatients who were rehabilitated in Elazig Mental Hospital Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment Center, 75 people who were diagnosed with MSUD according to DSM-5 and met the criteria, and 51 control groups were included in the study. RNFL, MMT and CMT measurements of both eyes of all participants were made by using the OCT. Total RNFL measurement were significantly thicker than the control group (p < 0.001). MMT and CMT of the eyes of the patient were thinner than the control group (p = 0.009, p < 0.001). The findings provide important contributions to the literature data and in light of these findings, it can be recommended to consider visual findings and possible neurodegeneration when evaluating patients in the addiction group and planning their treatment.

Abstract
Background: Depression has been shown to be associated with eye diseases, including dry eye disease (DED), cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy (DR). This narrative review explores potential pathophysiological connections between depression and eye disease, as well as its potential correlations with ocular parameters. Methods: A literature search was conducted in August 2022 in PUBMED, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. Published articles related to the subject were consolidated and classified according to respective eye diseases and pathophysiological mechanisms. Results: The literature reviewed suggests that common pathophysiological states like inflammation and neurodegeneration may contribute to both depression and certain eye diseases, while somatic symptoms and altered physiology, such as disruptions in circadian rhythm due to eye diseases, can also influence patients' mood states. Grounded in the shared embryological, anatomical, and physiological features between the eye and the brain, depression is also correlated to changes observed in non-invasive ophthalmological imaging modalities, such as changes in the retinal nerve fibre layer and retinal microvasculature. Conclusions: There is substantial evidence of a close association between depression and eye diseases. Understanding the underlying concepts can inform further research on treatment options and monitoring of depression based on ocular parameters.

Abstract
Childhood maltreatment is reportedly associated with atypical gray matter structures in the primary visual cortex (V1). This study explores the hypothesis that retinal structures, the sensory organs of vision, are associated with brain atypicality and child maltreatment and examines their interrelation. General ophthalmologic examinations, visual cognitive tasks, retinal imaging, and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were conducted in children and adolescents aged 9-18 years with maltreatment experiences (CM) and typically developing (TD) children. The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), the most superficial of the ten distinct retinal layers, was found to be significantly thinner in both eyes in CM. While whole-brain analysis using Voxel-based morphometry revealed a significantly larger gray matter volume (GMV) in the thalamus in CM, no significant correlation with RNFL thickness was observed. However, based on region-of-interest analysis, a thinner RNFL was associated with a larger GMV in the right V1. Although it cannot be ruled out that this outcome resulted from maltreatment alone, CM demonstrated subclinical structural atypicality in the retina, which may also correlate with the immaturity of V1 development. Examination of retinal thickness offers a novel clinical approach to capturing characteristics associated with childhood maltreatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a method that allows high-resolution cross-sectional imaging of biological tissues. It was suggested that changes in the cranial structure or functions would be reflected in the retina. OCT has been an important method in the diagnosis and follow-up of diseases via morphometric or quantitative retinal measurements. Free radicals, inflammatory processes, and neurotransmission disorders play a role in the etiology of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The study aimed to demonstrate the retinal changes in GAD patients due to neurodegeneration based on the comparison of the OCT data of the GAD patients and controls, and the differences between OCT findings of GAD patients and those of controls. METHODS The study group included 21 GAD patients. The control group included 21 individuals without any known psychiatric or organic disease, including eye diseases. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference between the macular volumes (MV) of the GAD and control groups, the macular volume was lower in the GAD group. There were positive correlations between BDI scores and MV, GCLT, RNFLT-i, RNFLT-n, between BAE scores and (RNFLT-n), and between the CGI severity scale scores and MV, RNFLT-n, and RNFLT-t. CONCLUSION OCT analysis of the GAD patients demonstrated that MV values were lower when compared to the control group. Patients with GAD should be screened for these retinal changes. OCT, a simple, non-invasive, and relatively inexpensive method could be employed as a supplementary method in the follow-up of GAD patients.

Abstract
Background Identifying the fundus objective biomarkers for the major depressive disorders (MDD) may help promote mental health. The aim of this study was to evaluate retinal neurovascular changes and further investigate their association with disease severity in MDD. Methods This cross-sectional study conducted in the hospital enrolled patients with MDD and healthy controls.The retinal neurovascular parameters for all subjects, including vessel density (VD), thickness of ganglion cell complex (GCC) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and optic nerve head (ONH) eg are automatically calculated by the software in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The severity of MDD including depressive symptoms, anxiety, cognition, and insomnia was assessed by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) respectively. Results This study included 74 MDD patients (n=74 eyes) and 60 healthy controls (HCs) (n=60 eyes). MDD patients showed significantly decreased VD of superficial and deep capillary plexus, thickness of GCC and RNFL, and volume of ONH (all p<0.05) and increased vertical cup-to-disc ratio and global loss volume (GLV) (all p<0.05) compared to HCs. Positive associations were found between HAMD scores and cup area (r=0.30, p=0.035), cup volume (r=0.31, p=0.029), and disc area (r=0.33, p=0.020) as well as ISI scores and RNFL thickness (r=0.34, p=0.047). Conclusion We found the retinal neurovascular impairment and its association with disease severity in MDD patients. OCTA showed promise as a potential complementary assessment tool for MDD.

Abstract
It is known that working in the shift system, especially the night shift, affects physical, mental, and social well-being. We investigated the changes in the inner retinal layers and choroidal layer of the eyes of nurses working night and day shifts using optical coherence tomography (OCT). We also explored the effect of night shift work on metacognition and the relationships between these variables. A total of 79 nurses participated in the study, of whom 40 worked night shifts. The researcher gave the participants sociodemographic information and the Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) form. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness, inner nuclear layer (INL) thickness, inner plexiform layer (IPL) thickness, central macular thickness (CMT), and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were measured with OCT. It was found that the level of metacognitive activity associated with cognitive confidence was higher (p = 0.044) for nurses who worked night shifts and that the level of metacognitive activity associated with cognitive awareness was lower (p = 0.015) for nurses who worked night shifts. RNFL-nasal superior (NS) thickness was lower in night shift workers than the day shift group (p = 0.017). Our study revealed significant relationships between metacognition and the OCT findings among night and day shift workers. Our study revealed that RNFL measurements and metacognitive activity may differ and there may be a relationship between these parameters in nurses who work shifts. Further research is needed to investigate the long-term effects of night shift work on retinal health.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the changes in ocular optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings in the comorbidity of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD). METHODS This study included 40 individuals diagnosed as having ADHD along with comorbid SLD, 40 individuals diagnosed as having only ADHD, and 40 individuals with no psychiatric disorders. OCT assessments were performed on eyes of the participants to obtain retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness, and macular thickness measurements. RESULTS In total, 240 eyes were evaluated. The right and left eyes were not significantly different in terms of RNFL, GCL, and macular thickness within groups (P > .05). RNFL thickness was measured and compared across four quadrants (superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal). Although these values were not significantly different between the groups (P > .05), RNFL was observed to be thinner in children with comorbid ADHD and SLD in all quadrants. Similarly, GCL and macular thickness measurements were also not different between the groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS Considering that retinal nerve fibers can be seen as an extension of the brain in the embryologic context, the results showed that OCT findings alone are not sufficient to detect the changes in ADHD and SLD comorbidity. The authors suggest that OCT is more useful in the etiology and follow-up of neurodegenerative diseases rather than neurodevelopmental disorders. Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, macular thickness, ganglion cell layer thickness, and inner plexiform layer thickness determined by Optic Coherence Tomography in the patient group diagnosed with a generalized anxiety disorder who did not receive any psychiatric medication with the healthy control group. METHODS Forty newly diagnosed, drug-free Generalized Anxiety Disorder patients and 43 healthy age- and gender-matched control subjects were included in the study. Macular thickness, ganglion cell layer thickness, inner plexiform layer thickness, and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness were measured using optical coherence tomography. Structured Clinical Interviews and a State-Trait Anxiety Scale were applied to both groups. RESULTS Gender distributions (P = 0.965) and mean ages were similar between the groups (P = 0.340). Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness measurements were not significantly different between the groups. We observed statistically significant thinning in the inner superior, inner nasal, inner temporal, inner inferior, and outer inferior quadrants of the macula in the patient group compared to the control group (P = 0.046, P = 0.046, P = 0.020, P = 0.007, P = 0.014). We found thinning at the Ganglion cell layer in the inner inferior and outer temporal quadrants (Respectively P = 0.018, P = 0.049), inner plexiform layer in the inner nasal, inner temporal, and inner inferior quadrants (Respectively P = 0.046, P = 0.044, P = 0.011) compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to reveal thinning in the macula, ganglion cell layer, and inner plexiform layer in newly diagnosed, drug-free Generalized Anxiety Disorder patients compared to the control group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Due to the common neurodevelopmental origin and easy accessibility, the retina serves as a surrogate marker for changes in the brain. Hence, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a tool to examine the neuronal layers of retina has gained importance in investigating psychiatric disorders. Several studies in the last decade have reported retinal structural alterations in schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the findings are inconsistent. Hence, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate alterations in OCT parameters in patients with SCZ, BD and MDD. METHODS We searched electronic databases for studies that examined OCT parameters in patients with SCZ, BD and MDD published up to January 2023. The primary outcome measures were thickness and volumes of the retinal Nerve Fibre Layer (RNFL). We conducted meta-analysis using a random effects model. RESULTS The searches yielded 2638 publications of which 43 studies were included in the final analysis across all disorders. Compared to controls, the RNFL was thinner in SCZ patients (SMD = -0.37, p = <0.001) and BD patients (SMD = -0.67, p = < 0.001), but not in MDD patients (SMD = -0.08, p = 0.54). On quadrant wise analysis, temporal quadrant RNFL was thinner in SCZ but not in BD, while all other quadrants were thinner in both SCZ and BD. CONCLUSION We found significant reductions in RNFL thickness in SCZ and BD, but not in MDD. The differential involvement in various quadrants and parameters across the disorders has potential implications for using retinal parameters as a diagnostic biomarker.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive approach for detecting changes in the retinal layers, which may also reflect changes in brain structure and function. As one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, depression has been associated with alteration of brain neuroplasticity. However, the role of OCT measurements in detecting depression remains unknown. This study aims to employ a systematic review and meta-analysis approach to explore ocular biomarkers measured by OCT for detecting depression. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will search studies describing the relationship between OCT and depression across seven electronic databases, and retrieve articles published from database inception to date. We will also manually search grey literature and reference lists included in the retrieved studies. Two independent reviewers will screen studies, extract data and assess risk of bias. Target outcomes will include peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness, macular ganglion cell complex thickness and macular volume, as well as other related indicators. Next, we will conduct subgroup analysis and meta-regression to explore study heterogeneity, then perform sensitivity analysis to investigate the robustness of the synthesised results. Meta-analysis will be performed using Review Manager (V.5.4.1) and STATA (V.12.0), and the certainty of evidence will be graded according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethics approval is not necessary because the data used in this systematic review and meta-analysis will be extracted from published studies. Study results will be disseminated by publishing our findings in a peer-reviewed journal.

Abstract
Introduction Treatment of severe mental illness (SMI) symptoms, especially negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia, remains a major unmet need. There is good evidence that SMIs have a strong genetic background and are characterized by multiple biological alterations, including disturbed brain circuits and connectivity, dysregulated neuronal excitation-inhibition, disturbed dopaminergic and glutamatergic pathways, and partially dysregulated inflammatory processes. The ways in which the dysregulated signaling pathways are interconnected remains largely unknown, in part because well-characterized clinical studies on comprehensive biomaterial are lacking. Furthermore, the development of drugs to treat SMIs such as schizophrenia is limited by the use of operationalized symptom-based clusters for diagnosis. Methods In line with the Research Domain Criteria initiative, the Clinical Deep Phenotyping (CDP) study is using a multimodal approach to reveal the neurobiological underpinnings of clinically relevant schizophrenia subgroups by performing broad transdiagnostic clinical characterization with standardized neurocognitive assessments, multimodal neuroimaging, electrophysiological assessments, retinal investigations, and omics-based analyzes of blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Moreover, to bridge the translational gap in biological psychiatry the study includes in vitro investigations on human-induced pluripotent stem cells, which are available from a subset of participants. Results Here, we report on the feasibility of this multimodal approach, which has been successfully initiated in the first participants in the CDP cohort; to date, the cohort comprises over 194 individuals with SMI and 187 age and gender matched healthy controls. In addition, we describe the applied research modalities and study objectives. Discussion The identification of cross-diagnostic and diagnosis-specific biotype-informed subgroups of patients and the translational dissection of those subgroups may help to pave the way toward precision medicine with artificial intelligence-supported tailored interventions and treatment. This aim is particularly important in psychiatry, a field where innovation is urgently needed because specific symptom domains, such as negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunction, and treatment-resistant symptoms in general are still difficult to treat.

Abstract
PURPOSE In the present study, the purpose was to examine the results of optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements in patients diagnosed with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) by comparing them with healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 114 eyes were evaluated in this study (27 patients and 30 control group participants). After detailed biomicroscopic examinations of all participants by the same ophthalmologist, both eyes were evaluated by OCT. The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL) and macular thickness were calculated from OCT. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were detected between the demographic data of the patient and control groups (p > 0.05). When OCT findings were evaluated, macular thickness and volume were not different between the groups (p > 0.05). With respect to RNFL, the left eye superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal quadrants, as well as the left eye's total measurements were found to be thicker than those of controls (p < 0.05). In both eyes, the left eye nasal quadrant and APIS total score were negatively correlated, the total RNLF measurement of the right eye and APIS motivation subscale score were negatively correlated, central macular thickness and the APIS motivation subscale score were positively correlated, and the APIS substance use characteristics subscale score and left eye temporal quadrant RNLF measurement were positively correlated. CONCLUSION Our study is the first to evaluate addiction severity and OCT findings in MUD. However, this study needs to be supported by further studies so that OCT findings, which can be used as an effective method for demonstrating possible neurodegeneration in methamphetamine use disorder, gain importance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim was to investigate the relationship between OCT findings and suicidal behavior (SB) in patients with Bipolar Disorder type 1 (BPD1) in comparison to healthy controls. METHODS Forty five euthymic BPD1 patients with previous suicide attempts (BPD1+), 46 euthymic BPD1 patients without previous suicide attempts (BPD1-) and 63 healthy controls were included. The subjects were evaluated with Sociodemographic Data Form, SCID, Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, Young Mania Rating Scale and OCT. RESULTS All OCT measures were lower in patients with BPD1 than healthy controls (p<0.001). While no significant differences were found between (BPD1+) and (BPD1-) in all GCC levels and inferior RNFL values (p>0.05), the superior RNFL and global RNFL values were found to be lower in the (BPD1+) than in the (BPD1-) (p = 0.037, p = 0.028, respectively). Global RNFL was found to significantly predict suicide risk in a multivariate logistic regression model (p = 0.024 Exp(B):0.930). CONCLUSIONS Neurodegeneration might occur during the course of BPD1 and SB. Decreased RNFL may be important for neurodegeneration related to SB.

Abstract
There is evidence of an association between hypertension and retinal arteriolar narrowing. Manual measurement of retinal vessels comes with additional variability, which can be eliminated using automated software. This scoping review aims to summarize research on automated retinal vessel analysis systems. Searches were performed on Medline, Scopus, and Cochrane to find studies examining automated systems for the diagnosis of retinal vascular alterations caused by hypertension using the following keywords: diagnosis; diagnostic screening programs; image processing, computer-assisted; artificial intelligence; electronic data processing; hypertensive retinopathy; hypertension; retinal vessels; arteriovenous ratio and retinal image analysis. The searches generated 433 articles. Of these, 25 articles published from 2010 to 2022 were included in the review. The retinographies analyzed were extracted from international databases and real scenarios. Automated systems to detect alterations in the retinal vasculature are being introduced into clinical practice for diagnosis in ophthalmology and other medical specialties due to the association of such changes with various diseases. These systems make the classification of hypertensive retinopathy and cardiovascular risk more reliable. They also make it possible for diagnosis to be performed in primary care, thus optimizing ophthalmological visits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is linked to degenerative and inflammatory processes in the brain. The retina, as well as the brain, originates from the ectoderm. The changes in the retina that occur in concert with MDD and sleep quality are not very clear. This study aimed to detect changes in the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular thickness in Chinese patients in correlation with MDD and sleep quality. METHODS Thirty-six MDD patients and 187 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All subjects were scanned by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and completed the Stroop Colour-Word Test (SCWT), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. RESULTS The RNFL and macular thickness were significantly thinner and disc-area enlargement of the right eye and cup-volume enlargement of both eyes were present in MDD patients. Linear regression analysis revealed that the RNFL and macular thickness in patients with MDD were correlated with sleep quality and the severity of depression. SCWT scores were higher following expansion of the cup volume of the right eye (all p < 0.01) and in correlation with larger disc areas. CONCLUSIONS Serious degrees of depression and insomnia in MDD patients may reflect obvious atrophy of the inner and outer rings of the right macula and enlargement of the optic disc in both eyes. These retinal structural changes might influence the visual cognition of patients with MDD.

Abstract
AIM Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a novel method that allows high resolution cross-sectional imaging of biological tissues. It was suggested that changes in the cranial structure or functions would be reflected in the retina. OCT has been an important method in the diagnosis and follow-up of diseases via morphometric or quantitative retinal measurements. Panic disorder (PD) is an anxiety disorder, where free radicals, inflammatory processes and neurotransmitter transmission disorders play a role in the etiology. The present study aimed to demonstrate neurodegeneration in PD by the comparison of PD patient and control OCT data. MATERIAL AND METHOD The study group included 21 PD patients who met the study criteria. The control group included 21 healthy individuals without any known psychiatric or organic disease, including eye disease, and gender-matched to the patient group. All participants underwent detailed psychiatric and eye examinations. Central macular thickness (CMT), macular volume (MV), mean and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL), ganglion cell layer thickness (GCLT), and central choroidal thickness (CCT) were measured in both eyes of all participants with OCT. A sociodemographic data form, Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGIS), and Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) were administered to the participants. RESULTS In the study, it was determined that the CMT values of the PD patients were lower when compared to the controls in the OCT examination. There was a statistically significant difference between the CMT of the PD patient group and the control group; the CMT was lower in the patient group. There were no significant differences between the groups based on GCLT, RNFL superior, RNFL inferior, RNFL nasal, RNFL temporal, and CCT. There was no significant correlation between CGIS, PDSS scores and OCT measurements. CONCLUSION This is the first study in the literature where patients with a PD diagnosis were analyzed based on the OCT method. OCT, which is a simple, noninvasive and relatively inexpensive method that the patient could easily adapt to during imaging, could be employed as a supplementary method in the diagnosis and follow-up of PD patients.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the ocular and hemodynamic factors contributing to the central visual function in glaucoma patients with myopia. Methods This study was a prospective observational study, which included 236 eyes of 140 patients with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), which includes 114 eyes with mild myopia (axial length ≥24 and <26 mm) and 122 eyes with moderate-to-severe myopia (axial length ≥26 mm). Ocular characteristics were axial length and posterior pole profiles, including peripapillary atrophy (PPA) to disc area ratio, disc tilt ratio, disc torsion, and disc-foveal angle. Hemodynamic factors included standard deviation of the mean of qualified normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) of a heart rate variability (HRV) test and vessel density (VD) parameters from optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The root mean square error was estimated as a measure of the VD fluctuation. Association between ocular characteristics and VD parameters of the OCTA with the central sensitivity of the 10-degree visual field or the presence of central scotoma were analyzed. Results Deep layer VD of the peripapillary and macular areas showed significant differences between mild and moderate-to-severe myopia (P = 0.034 and P = 0.045, respectively). Structural parameters, especially PPA to disc area ratio, had significant correlation with peripapillary VD parameters in myopic eyes. Lower SDNN value (ß = 0.924, P = 0.011), lower deep VD of the macular area (ß = 0.845, P = 0.001), and greater fluctuation of deep VD in the peripapillary area (ß = 1.517, P = 0.005) were associated with the presence of central scotoma in patients with glaucoma with myopia in multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusions The structural changes by myopia, especially in the peripapillary region, affected VD parameters in myopic eyes. Lower deep VD and greater VD fluctuation in the peripapillary region showed association with central scotoma in patients with glaucoma with myopia, suggesting both structural and vascular changes by myopia may be related to central visual function in glaucoma patients with myopia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neuroimaging studies in patients with bipolar disorder have suggested that a neuropathological process may be effective in this disease. Neurodegenerative changes in the retina can be followed by optical coherence tomography, a non-invasive imaging method that allows in vivo visualization of the retinal layers. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible differences in optical coherence tomography parameters during euthymic, manic, and depressive episodes in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder. METHODS A total of 150 patients with bipolar disorder were included in the study, divided into three groups (50 patients in a euthymic state, 50 patients in a manic state, and 50 patients in a depressive state) and compared with 50 healthy controls. Ganglion cell complex thickness was measured with automated macular segmentation software of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. RESULTS Ganglion cell complex thicknesses were thicker in all quadrants in patient groups than the control group but the differences were significant in perifoveal superior and perifoveal inferior quadrants (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). There were no differences in ganglion cell complex thickness among the patient groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The evaluation of ganglion cell complex thickness by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography may give a clue for monitoring neurodegenerative changes in patients with bipolar disorder.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) with controls in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to examine the relationship between RNFL thickness and the level of performance in disease severity and executive function tests in ADHD cases. METHODS The study included 38 volunteer patients diagnosed with ADHD and 30 healthy volunteers. Adult ADHD self-report scale was used for ADHD symptom severity. Executive functions were evaluated by Digit Span Test, Verbal Fluency Test, Stroop Test, and Trail Making Test. RNFL thickness of all participants was evaluated using optical coherence tomography (OCT). RESULTS In the comparison of RNFL values, it was found that right mean, right temporal, right temporal inferior, left mean, left nasal, and left nasal inferior quadrant values were statistically thinner in ADHD cases compared to the control group (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant correlation between the mean RNFL thickness values of the right and left eyes of ADHD cases and the symptom severity and performance levels in executive function tests. CONCLUSION This study is a guide in terms of being the first study investigating the relationship between RNFL thickness, symptom severity, and various neuropsychological tests in adults with ADHD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In our study, we aimed to examine Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) findings in patients diagnosed with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) by comparing them with healthy controls. METHODS Sixty-five people were included in our study and 130 eyes were evaluated; 33 cases were included in the patient group with MUD according to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and 32 as the healthy control group. Detailed biomicroscopic examinations and then both eyes were evaluated through OCT by the same ophthalmologist. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference between the patient and control groups in terms of gender and age (p > 0.05). When the OCT findings were evaluated, the measurements of the patients in any quadrant for retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) were not statistically different from the control group (p > 0.05). Macula and choroidal layer thickness did not differ between the groups (p > 0.05). Only right intraocular pressure was found to be decreased in the patient group (p = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS There are a limited number of studies examining OCT findings in patients with MUD. Visual symptoms and intraocular pressure should be considered when evaluating patients with MUD and planning their treatment. In addition; in order for OCT findings to gain importance, which can be used as an effective method to show the possible neurodegeneration that may occur in substance use disorder, it should be supported with further research.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Whether neurodegeneration contributes to the early pathobiology of late-life depression remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether lower retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, a marker of neurodegeneration, is associated with the incidence of clinically relevant depressive symptoms and depressive symptoms over time. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This is a population-based cohort study from the Netherlands (The Maastricht Study) with baseline examination between 2010 and 2020 and median (IQR) follow-up of 5.0 (3.0-6.0) years. Participants were recruited from the general population. Individuals with type 2 diabetes were oversampled by design. Data analysis was performed from September 2020 to January 2021. EXPOSURES RNFL, an index of neurodegeneration, assessed with optical coherence tomography. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9 (continuous score, 0-27) at baseline and over time via annual assessments. The presence of clinically relevant depressive symptoms was defined as a PHQ-9 score of 10 or higher. RESULTS We used data from 4934 participants with depressive symptoms over time (mean [SD] age, 59.7 [8.4] years; 2159 women [50.8%]; 870 had type 2 diabetes [20.5%]). Lower RNFL thickness was associated with higher incidence of clinically relevant depressive symptoms (per 1 SD, hazard ratio 1.11; 95% CI, 1.01-1.23) and more depressive symptoms over time (per 1 SD, rate ratio, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06), after adjustment for demographic, cardiovascular, and lifestyle factors. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The findings of this study suggest that lower RNFL thickness is associated with higher incidence of clinically relevant depressive symptoms and more depressive symptoms over time. Hence, neurodegeneration may be associated with the early pathobiology of late-life depression.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study is to explore an objective approach that aids the diagnosis of bipolar disorder (BD), based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) data which are analyzed using artificial intelligence. Methods: Structural analyses of nine layers of the retina were analyzed in 17 type I BD patients and 42 controls, according to the areas defined by the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) chart. The most discriminating variables made up the feature vector of several automatic classifiers: Gaussian Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbors and support vector machines. Results: BD patients presented retinal thinning affecting most layers, compared to controls. The retinal thickness of the parafoveolar area showed a high capacity to discriminate BD subjects from healthy individuals, specifically for the ganglion cell (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.82) and internal plexiform (AUC = 0.83) layers. The best classifier showed an accuracy of 0.95 for classifying BD versus controls, using as variables of the feature vector the IPL (inner nasal region) and the INL (outer nasal and inner inferior regions) thickness. Conclusions: Our patients with BD present structural alterations in the retina, and artificial intelligence seem to be a useful tool in BD diagnosis, but larger studies are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects more than 264 million people worldwide and is associated with an impaired quality of life as well as a higher risk of mortality. Current routine treatments demonstrate limited effectiveness. Light therapy (LT) on its own or in combination with antidepressant treatments could be an effective treatment, but the use of conventional LT devices use is restrictive. Portable LT devices allow patients to continue with their day-to-day activities and therefore encourage better treatment compliance. They have not been evaluated in MDD. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The study is a single-centre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial assessing the efficacy of LT delivered via a portable device in addition to usual care (medical care and drug treatment) for inpatients and outpatients with unipolar non-seasonal MDD. Over the course of 8 weeks, patients use the device daily for 30 min at medium intensity as soon as possible after waking up and preferably between 07:00 and 09:00. All patients continue their usual care with their referring physician. N=50 patients with MDD are included. The primary outcome measure is depressive symptom severity assessed using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale between baseline and the eighth week. Secondary outcome measures are sleep quality assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale and anxiety level assessed on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, between baseline and week 8. Further parameters relating to cognitive function are measured at baseline and after the intervention. An ancillary study aims to evaluate the impact of MDD on the retina and to follow its progression. Main limitations include risk of discontinuation or non-adherence and bias in patient selection. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study protocol was approved by Ile de France X's Ethics Committee (protocol number 34-2018). Findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT03685942.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We analyzed the correlation of the clinical data with retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and macular thickness in bipolar disorder patients and major depression patients. The aim of this study is to explore factors that affect RNFL thickness in bipolar disorder patients and major depression patients, with a view to providing a new diagnostic strategy. METHODS Eighty-two bipolar disorder patients, 35 major depression patients and 274 people who were age and gender matched with the patients were enrolled. Demographic information and metabolic profile of all participants were collected. Best-corrected visual acuity of each eye, intraocular pressure (IOP), fundus examination was performed. RNFL and macular thickness were measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Correlations between RNFL and macular thickness and other data were analyzed. RESULTS RNFL and macula lutea in bipolar dipolar patients and major depression patients are thinner than normal people. Triglyceride and UA levels are the highest in the bipolar disorder group, while alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (AST) levels in the depression group are the highest. Age onset and ALT are positively while uric acid (UA) is negatively correlated with RNFL thickness in bipolar dipolar patients. Cholesterol level is positively correlated with RNFL thickness while the duration of illness is correlated with RNFL thickness of left eye in major depression patients. CONCLUSIONS RNFL and macula lutea in bipolar dipolar patients and major depression patients are thinner than normal people. In bipolar disorder patients, age-onset and ALT are potential protective factors in the progress of RNFL thinning, while UA is the pathological factor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mood disorders are particularly common, disabling conditions. Diagnosis can be difficult as it may involve different pathophysiological assumptions. This could explain why such disorders are resistant to treatment. The retina is part of the central nervous system and shares a common embryonic origin with the brain. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique for analysing the different layers of the retina. We reviewed studies that examined the retina with OCT in mood disorders. METHODS We conducted Pubmed search and additional manual research based on the bibliography in each of selected articles. We found and analysed 11 articles relevant to our subject. RESULTS This literature review confirms that it is possible to use OCT to detect neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation in mood disorders. Their impact is thought to depend on the duration and severity of the disease, and whether it is in acute or chronic stage. The differences seen in studies dealing with depression and those looking at bipolar disorder may reflect the particular characteristics of each disorder. A number of OCT parameters can be proposed as biomarkers of active or chronic inflammation and neurodegeneration. Markers of predisposition to an at-risk mental state are also suggested. LIMITATIONS The main limitation is selection bias, studies including more varied population would help to confirm and precise these results. CONCLUSION OCT is thus a particularly promising tool for evaluating some of the etiopathogenetic mechanisms involved in mood disorders. The combination with other approaches could help to find more specific biomarkers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a relatively new diagnosis method displaying biological tissue layers by with high-resolution sections. In the present study, the purpose was to examine the OCT findings of patients with Multiple Substance Use Disorder (MSUD) by comparing these findings with healthy controls. METHODS The study included 30 MSUD and 30 controls. Detailed biomicroscopic examinations were carried out for all participants, and intraocular pressure, followed by OCT. The central macular thickness (CMT), mean macular thickness (MMT), mean macular volume (MMV), and retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFL) were measured by using OCT. RESULTS It was determined that the MMT and CMT were thinned in both eyes compared to the healthy controls. The MMV was decreased in both eyes in patients with substance use disorders compared to healthy controls. The RNFL and total thickness were thickened in temporal and inferior parts in patients with MSUD in both eyes compared to healthy. In the superior quadrant, thickening was detected only in the left eye. CONCLUSIONS Based on our results obtained here, it was concluded that vision-related findings should be carefully questioned and evaluated when treatment is planned for patients with substance use.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are currently among the most common psychiatric disorders, known to constitute a serious public health issue in terms of morbidity, mortality and functional handicap. Their pathophysiology is still unclear, but there is now increasing evidence supporting the existence of abnormalities of neurotransmission. As the retina is an extension of the central nervous system, it may be an interesting site of study which might provide a better understanding of the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. Several studies have demonstrated retinal abnormalities, with abnormal cone and rod responses on electroretinography (ERG), suggesting a process of functional neuronal loss, structurally supported by a decrease in the retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL) on optical coherence tomography (OCT), which suggests involvement of the molecular signal pathways of neurotransmission. These tests could be useful tools for diagnosing and monitoring psychiatric disorders. This article is an overview of the literature on retinal abnormalities observed in patients with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, and discusses how they could be pathophysiologic markers.

Abstract
Background: We sought to investigate visual function, primarily, and structural changes in retinal ganglion cells, secondarily, in patients with major depressive disorder. Methods: A total of 50 normal participants and 49 patients with major depressive disorder were included in this cross-sectional study. The participants underwent 24–2 standard automated perimetry and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Results: The pattern standard deviation (PSD) in the visual field test was higher in the major depressive disorder patients than in the normal control subjects (p = 0.017). The patients with major depressive disorder showed reduced minimum ganglion cell–inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness relative to the normal control participants (p = 0.015). The average score on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale showed a significant correlation with the PSD, minimum GCIPL thickness, and inferior GCIPL thickness (r = 0.265, p = 0.009; r = −0.239, p = 0.017; and r = −0.204, p = 0.043, respectively). The multivariate analysis of factors associated with PSD showed old age and a high Hamilton Depression Rating score to be relevant (p = 0.002 and 0.028, respectively). Conclusions: Visual function was decreased and the GCIPL thickness was reduced in major depressive disorder patients. The retinal neurodegenerative process in depression might be considered in patients with depression.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects people worldwide. MDD treatments include antidepressants, which involve a delayed onset of action, long-term treatment, side effects and, frequently, only partial efficacy. The lack of access to the living brain, and the complex and still poorly elucidated pathophysiology of MDD, hinders treatment development. There is not only a need for new treatment strategies, but also for new approaches to investigating the pathophysiology of MDD. Light therapy is a well-established treatment acting through the retina. Since the retina is part of the central nervous system, it has been suggested as a useful area for investigating mental illness. In this article, we will first set out the evidence that MDD affects the retina's structure and function. We will then review studies evaluating the efficacy of light therapy in unipolar non-seasonal MDD. Finally, we discuss the disruption of melatoninergic pathways in MDD, its assessment through the retina and the treatment of this disruption with light therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Volume reductions in brain structures of patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) have repeatedly been found in voxel-based morphometry MRI studies. Hence, an underlying neurodegenerative etiological component of SSD is currently being discussed. In recent years, the imaging method of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has shown its potential in evaluating structural changes in the retina in patients with confirmed neurodegenerative disorders, providing a window into the brain. METHODS Twenty-six patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and 23 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were examined with the Heidelberg Spectralis OCT system to derive a single-layer analysis of both retinas. The segmentation of retinal layers was manually corrected to minimize artifacts and software imprecisions. RESULTS Compared to the control group, SSD patients showed reduced thickness and volume measurements for nearly all retinal layers, and these differences reached significance for macular volume, macular thickness, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and inner nucleiform layer (INL). Furthermore, a significant correlation between the duration of illness and the total volume of the RNFL was found. CONCLUSION Our OCT measurements demonstrate reduced single retinal layer thickness in patients with SSD. In the context of the MRI volume changes, our results provide further evidence that structural changes seen in the brain of patients are also observable in the retina, potentially allowing further insights into the different components of the nervous system that are altered in this highly etiologically complex disorder.

Abstract
Sleep may play a fundamental role in retinal regulation and the degree of retinal variables. However, no clinical study has investigated optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters in patients with primary insomnia. All participants were evaluated with the insomnia severity index (ISI) and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). The retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer (GC), inner plexiform layer (IPL), macula and choroidal (CH) thickness were compared between 52 drug-naïve patients with primary insomnia and 45 age-gender-BMI-smoke status matched healthy controls (HC). The patients with primary insomnia differed from the HC regarding RNFL-Global (p = 0.024) and RNFL-Nasal inferior (p = 0.010); IPL-Temporal (p < 0.001), IPL-Nasal (p < 0.001); CH-Global (p < 0.001), CH-Temporal (p = 0.004), CH-Nasal (p < 0.001), and CH-Fovea (p = 0.019). ISI correlated with RNFL-Global and RNFL-Nasal inferior. The regression analysis revealed that ISI was the significant predictor for the thickness of RNFL- Nasal inferior (p = 0.020), RNFL-Global (p = 0.031), and CH-Nasal (p = 0.035) in patients with primary insomnia. Sleep disorders are seen commonly in patients with psychiatric, including ocular diseases. Adjusting the effect of insomnia can help to clarify the consistency in findings of OCT.

Abstract
Diagnosis and monitoring of psychiatric disorders rely heavily on subjective self-reports of clinical symptoms, which are complicated by the varying consistency of accounts reported by patients with an impaired mental state. Hence, more objective and quantifiable measures have been sought to provide clinicians with more robust methods to evaluate symptomology and track progression of disease in response to treatments. Owing to the shared origins of the retina and the brain, it has been suggested that changes in the retina may correlate with structural and functional changes in the brain. Vast improvements in retinal imaging, namely optical coherence tomography (OCT) and electrodiagnostic technology, have made it possible to investigate the eye at a microscopic level, allowing for the investigation of potential biomarkers in vivo. This review provides a summary of retinal biomarkers associated with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression, demonstrating how retinal biomarkers may be used to complement existing methods and provide structural markers of pathophysiological mechanisms that underpin brain dysfunction in psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Objective: To compare intraocular pressure (IOP) and macular, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thicknesses in treatment-naive children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), children with ADHD on regular methylphenidate (MPH) treatment for at least 3 months, and healthy controls. Methods: A total of 58 treatment-naive children with ADHD, 45 children with ADHD on regular MPH treatment, and 44 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to assess global RNFL thickness, central macular thickness, and GCL thickness in both eyes. Results: Separate univariate analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) on the outcome variables revealed a significant difference among the research groups with respect to IOP in the left eye. Post-hoc univariate analyses indicated that left IOP was significantly higher in children with ADHD under MPH treatment than among healthy controls. However, global RNFL thickness, central macular thickness, and GCL thickness of both eyes, as well as IOP in the right eye, were not significantly different across groups. Conclusion: Further longitudinal follow-up studies are needed to determine whether MPH treatment has any effect on IOP or OCT findings.

Abstract
Purpose: In our study, we aimed to investigate the ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness (GCIPL), retinal nerve fibre layer thickness (RNFL), mean macular volume (MMV), central macular thickness (CMT), mean macular thickness (MMT), and choroidal thickness (CT) values with optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients who are diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD).Materials and methods: The study included 43 patients who were diagnosed with AUD, and 43 healthy controls. Detailed biomicroscopic examinations of all the participants, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, anterior and posterior segment examinations, and then, OCT measurements were carried out.Results: Although the measured values for RNFL in the superior and temporal quadrant are within normal limits, they were slightly higher compared to those in the control group (p values 0.127 and 0.191 for superior quadrant and temporal quadrant, respectively). The CT measurements in all quadrants were higher than the control group; however, these measurements were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). When the relation between clinical features and OCT findings of the patients were examined, it was determined that the ages of the patients were statistically significantly and inversely correlated with the temporal CT and also the nasal and temporal quadrants of RNFL.Conclusions: Our study is the first study that examines the retinal GCIPL and CT with OCT in patients who are diagnosed with AUD. In our results, it was determined that there were no statistically significant differences between the participants in terms of OCT parameters. Further studies with larger sampling groups evaluating neurotransmission findings may provide wider results.

Taking advantage of the clear optical media of the eye and ever-increasing resolution of modern imaging techniques, retinal morphology can now be visualized at a cellular level in vivo. This has provided a multitude of possible biomarkers and investigative surrogates that may be used to identify, monitor and study diseases until now limited to the brain. In many neurodegenerative conditions, early diagnosis is often very challenging due to the lack of tests with high sensitivity and specificity, but, once made, opens the door to patients accessing the correct treatment that can potentially improve functional outcomes. Using retinal biomarkers in vivo as an additional diagnostic tool may help overcome the need for invasive tests and histological specimens, and offers the opportunity to longitudinally monitor individuals over time. This review aims to summarise retinal biomarkers associated with a range of neurological conditions including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple sclerosis (MS), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and prion diseases from a clinical perspective. By comparing their similarities and differences according to primary pathological processes, we hope to show how retinal correlates can aid clinical decisions, and accelerate the study of this rapidly developing area of research.

Abstract
AIM Evidence suggests microvascular dysfunction (wider retinal venules and narrower arterioles) in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). The vascular development is synchronous with neuronal development in the retina and brain. The retinal vessel trajectory is related to retinal nerve fiber layer thinning and cerebrovascular abnormalities in SCZ and BD and has not yet been examined. Hence, in this study we examined the retinal vascular trajectory in SCZ and BD in comparison with healthy volunteers (HV). METHODS Retinal images were acquired from 100 HV, SCZ patients, and BD patients, respectively, with a non-mydriatic fundus camera. Images were quantified to obtain the retinal arterial and venous trajectories using a validated, semiautomated algorithm. Analysis of covariance and regression analyses were conducted to examine group differences. A supervised machine-learning ensemble of bagged-trees method was used for automated classification of trajectory values. RESULTS There was a significant difference among groups in both the retinal venous trajectory (HV: 0.17 ± 0.08; SCZ: 0.25 ± 0.17; BD: 0.27 ± 0.20; P < 0.001) and the arterial trajectory (HV: 0.34 ± 0.15; SCZ: 0.29 ± 0.10; BD: 0.29 ± 0.11; P = 0.003) even after adjusting for age and sex (P < 0.001). On post-hoc analysis, the SCZ and BD groups differed from the HV on retinal venous and arterial trajectories, but there was no difference between SCZ and BD patients. The machine learning showed an accuracy of 86% and 73% for classifying HV versus SCZ and BD, respectively. CONCLUSION Smaller trajectories of retinal arteries indicate wider and flatter curves in SCZ and BD. Considering the relation between retinal/cerebral vasculatures and retinal nerve fiber layer thinness, the retinal vascular trajectory is a potential marker for SCZ and BD. As a relatively affordable investigation, retinal fundus photography should be further explored in SCZ and BD as a potential screening measure.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine if changes in OCT parameters including peripapillary RNFL thickness and GCC thickness in Egyptian patients with bipolar disorder exist, and to correlate them with disease severity and clinical characteristics. METHODS A case-control study conducted on 40 patients with bipolar disorder were compared to 40 matched healthy controls. Both patients and controls were subjected to ophthalmic examination including: BCVA, slit-lamp examination, fundus examination, and OCT imaging. Patients were also subjected to Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). RESULTS Thinning of average (RNFL) and average (GCC) thickness of right and left eye in patients with BPD (whether received electroconvulsive therapy or not) when compared with control subjects. Number of episodes, age at onset and severity of disease showed insignificant correlation with OCT parameters. CONCLUSIONS Significant degenerative changes were detected by OCT in patients with bipolar disorder that were not affected by receiving ECT and not related to disease severity or duration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The nerves and axons of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) are similar to those in the brain and therefore retina is considered as the extension of the brain. We aimed to evaluate the RNFL thickness in the treatment-resistant major depressive patients before and after repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment and at least 6 months later after rTMS treatment using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Thirty patients with treatment resistant major depression and 24 healthy controls were included in the study. rTMS was applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of the patients. RESULTS rTMS was initiated in 28 patients. OCT assessments were performed in 24 patients at baseline and after rTMS treatment and in 19 patients at least sixth months after the rTMS treatment. We found significant increase in RNFL thickness compared with controls at the baseline and further increase in RNFL thickness after rTMS treatment. Although there was a decreasing trend in RNFL thickness 6 months after rTMS treatment, 6 months later RNFL thickness was still higher compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS RNFL thickness is increased in treatment resistant major depression and rTMS over the left DLPFC further increases RNFL thickness in treatment resistant major depressive patients.

Abstract
It has recently been suggested that alterations of the layers of the retina could be a biomarker of specific mental disorders since they originate in the same embryonic layer as the brain and both are interconnected through the optic nerve. The purpose of this article is to offer a systematic review of the literature and a thematic synthesis on the current state of the alterations of the retina layers identified by optical coherence tomography in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. For this purpose, we performed a bibliographic search, a systematic review of the studies and a thematic synthesis of the reported findings. Patients with schizophrenia have more abnormal findings followed by patients with bipolar disorder, with very few findings in depression. The nerve fiber layer is the retinal layer with more abnormal findings both in schizophrenia and in bipolar disorder, while no study in major depression found alterations in it. Of the clinical parameters, the duration of the illness correlates significantly and inversely with the thickness of the different layers in all disorders. When interpreting these data, it is necessary to take into account the limitations and differences of the studies, especially the mean length of the disorders. Given that this was very different among the 3 disorders (more than doubled in the case of schizophrenia respect to major depression), the differences in the results found could be due more to the effect of the length of illness than to the disorder itself. In summary, optical coherence tomography findings are promising, since they could provide biomarkers of neurodegeneration and/or neuroprogression of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Abstract
Optical coherence tomography is designed to evaluate in vivo qualitative and quantitative changes of the anterior segment, optic nerve and the retina. Initial applications of this technology were confined mainly to ophthalmic diseases. However recently, numerous studies have evaluated its use in systemic conditions and in therapeutics where, optic nerve and retinal architecture can be assessed to monitor progression of systemic conditions and its response to treatment. This is a narrative review aimed at evaluating the debate surrounding the role of spectral domain optical coherence tomography, in systemic conditions where optic nerve affection can be measured and be used in the diagnosis, monitoring and assessment of treatment effect as a non-invasive, quick, novel technique.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We hypothesized that the ongoing neurotrophic effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) might be detected in the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS This study was conducted using a prospective design. The RNFL thickness alterations of 18 psychiatric patients undergoing ECT were assessed using OCT. The results were compared with the RNFL thicknesses of 18 age and gender-matched healthy controls. RESULTS In the left eye, the average RNFL (p = 0.025), superior quadrant (p = 0.029), and nasal quadrant (p = 0.021) thicknesses were significantly increased after the last ECT treatment. In contrast to the right eye, the basal left-eye superior RNFL thickness (p = 0.038) and inferior quadrant (p = 0.007) thicknesses were significantly lower in the patients than in the healthy controls. CONCLUSION Here, we have revealed a significant lateralized influence of ECT on the left-eye RNFL. However, larger case series should be conducted before interpreting our current findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies on the pathophysiology of major depression (MD) indicate that degenerative and inflammatory processes may play a role. This finding is supported by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based meta-analysis that show volume reductions in circumscribed areas of the brain in patients with MD. Using optical coherence tomography (OCT), retinal changes have been demonstrated in neurodegenerative disorders. In light of this inflammatory/degenerative hypothesis, we tested whether patients with MD exhibit retinal alterations that might correlate with the severity and duration of the disease. METHODS Patients with MD and age- and gender-matched healthy controls were recruited for the measurement of the total volume and thickness of their retina as well as the thicknesses and volumes of five different retinal layers using single-layer-analysis provided by the spectral-domain-OCT. RESULTS OCT data from 28 patients with MD and 20 healthy controls were available for evaluation. The exploratory intra-individual group comparison of the two eyes showed a small but significant difference in the retinal total volume (right = 8.69mm3; left = 8.72mm3; p = 0.03) only in patients with MD. There were no other significant differences between the patients with MD and the healthy controls with respect to the OCT measurements. LIMITATIONS The small group size as well as the absence of correction for multiple testing due to the exploratory design should be considered as limitations of our study. CONCLUSION While retinal total volume differs between the eyes of patients with MD, the comparison of retinal parameters between these patients and age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers did not show any differences.
