Associations between cortical thickness, structural connectivity and severity of dimensional bulimia nervosa symptomatology

Structural and functional neural patterns among sub-threshold bulimia nervosa: Abnormalities in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and orbitofrontal cortex

BACKGROUND

Disordered eating behaviors are prevalent among youngsters and highly associated with dysfunction in neurocognitive systems. We aimed to identify the potential changes in individuals with bulimia symptoms (sub-BN) to generate insights to understand developmental pathophysiology of bulimia nervosa.

METHODS

We investigated group differences in terms of degree centrality (DC) and gray matter volume (GMV) among 145 undergraduates with bulimia symptoms and 140 matched control undergraduates, with the secondary analysis of the whole brain connectivity in these regions of interest showing differences in static functional connectivity (FC).

RESULTS

The sub-BN group exhibited abnormalities of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and right orbitofrontal cortex in both GMV and DC, and displayed decreased FC between these regions and the precuneus. We also observed that sub-BN presented with reduced FC between the calcarine and superior temporal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus and inferior parietal gyrus. Additionally, brain-behavioral associations suggest a distinct relationship between these FCs and psychopathological symptoms in sub-BN group.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study demonstrated that individuals with bulimia symptoms present with aberrant neural patterns that mainly involved in cognitive control and reward processing, as well as attentional and self-referential processing, which could provide important insights into the pathology of BN.

Cortical thickness and childhood eating behaviors: differences according to sex and age, and relevance for eating disorders

PURPOSE

This study investigated the association between childhood eating behaviors and cortical morphology, in relation to sex and age, in a community sample.

METHODS

Neuroimaging data of 71 children (mean age = 9.9 ± 1.4 years; 39 boys/32 girls) were obtained from the Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland Sample. Emotional overeating, food fussiness, and emotional undereating were assessed using the Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Cortical thickness was obtained at 81,924 vertices covering the entire cortex. Generalized Linear Mixed Models were used for statistical analysis.

RESULTS

There was a significant effect of sex in the association between cortical thickness and emotional overeating (localized at the right postcentral and bilateral superior parietal gyri). Boys with more emotional overeating presented cortical thickening, whereas the opposite was observed in girls (p < 0.05). Different patterns of association were identified between food fussiness and cortical thickness (p < 0.05). The left rostral middle frontal gyrus displayed a positive correlation with food fussiness from 6 to 8 years, but a negative correlation from 12 to 14 years. Emotional undereating was associated with cortical thickening at the left precuneus, left middle temporal gyrus, and left insula (p < 0.05) with no effect of sex or age.

CONCLUSIONS

Leveraging on a community sample, findings support distinct patterns of associations between eating behaviors and cortical thickness, depending on sex and age.

Systematic reduction of gray matter volume in anorexia nervosa, but relative enlargement with clinical symptoms in the prefrontal and posterior insular cortices: a multicenter neuroimaging study

Although brain morphological abnormalities have been reported in anorexia nervosa (AN), the reliability and reproducibility of previous studies were limited due to insufficient sample sizes, which prevented exploratory analysis of the whole brain as opposed to regions of interest (ROIs). Objective was to identify brain morphological abnormalities in AN and the association with severity of AN by brain structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a multicenter study, and to conduct exploratory analysis of the whole brain. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional multicenter study using T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) data collected between May 2014 and February 2019 in Japan. We analyzed MRI data from 103 female AN patients (58 anorexia nervosa restricting type [ANR] and 45 anorexia nervosa binge-purging type [ANBP]) and 102 age-matched female healthy controls (HC). MRI data from five centers were preprocessed using the latest harmonization method to correct for intercenter differences. Gray matter volume (GMV) was calculated from T1WI data of all participants. Of the 205 participants, we obtained severity of eating disorder symptom scores from 179 participants, including 87 in the AN group (51 ANR, 36 ANBP) and 92 HC using the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) 6.0. GMV reduction were observed in the AN brain, including the bilateral cerebellum, middle and posterior cingulate gyrus, supplementary motor cortex, precentral gyrus medial segment, and thalamus. In addition, the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), rostral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and posterior insula volumes showed positive correlations with severity of symptoms. This multicenter study was conducted with a large sample size to identify brain morphological abnormalities in AN. The findings provide a better understanding of the pathogenesis of AN and have potential for the development of brain imaging biomarkers of AN. Exploring the thalamus: a crucial hub for brain function and communication in patients with bulimia nervosa

BACKGROUND

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge eating and compensatory behaviors. The thalamus plays a crucial role in the neural circuitry related to eating behavior and needs to be further explored in BN.

METHODS

In this study, 49 BN patients and 44 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. We applied the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation to investigate regional brain activity in the thalamus and functional connectivity (FC) to examine the synchronization of activity between thalamic subregions and other brain regions in both groups. All results underwent false discovery rate (p < 0.05, FDR correction) correction. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to assess the relationship between the patients' abnormal clinical performance and the thalamic alterations (p < 0.05, FDR correction).

RESULTS

We found no significant differences in neural activity between BN patients and HCs in the sixteen thalamic subregions. However, compared to the HCs, the individuals with BN showed decreased FC between the thalamic subregions and several regions, including the bilateral prefrontal cortex, right inferior parietal lobule, right supplementary motor area, right insula, cingulate gyrus and vermis. Additionally, BN patients showed increased FC between the thalamic subregions and visual association regions, primary sensorimotor cortex, and left cerebellum. These altered FC patterns in the thalamus were found to be correlated with clinical variables (the frequency of binge eating/purging per week and external eating behavior scale scores) in the BN group. All results have passed FDR correction.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study provides evidence that there is disrupted FC between thalamic subregions and other brain regions in BN patients during resting state. These regions are primarily located within the frontoparietal network, default mode network, somatosensory, and visual network. These findings elucidate the neural activity characteristics underlying BN and suggest that thalamic subregions have potential as targets for future neuromodulation interventions.

Characteristics of white matter alterations along fibres in patients with bulimia nervosa: A combined voxelwise and tractography study

Accumulating evidence supports the hypothesis that white matter (WM) abnormalities are involved in the pathophysiology of bulimia nervosa (BN); however, findings from in vivo neuroimaging studies have been inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the possible brain WM alterations, including WM volume and microstructure, in patients with BN. We recruited 43 BN patients and 31 healthy controls (HCs). All participants underwent structural and diffusion tensor imaging. Differences in WM volume and microstructure were evaluated using voxel-based morphometry, tract-based spatial statistics, and automated fibre quantification analysis. Compared with HCs, BN patients showed significantly decreased fractional anisotropy in the middle part of the corpus callosum (nodes 31-32) and increased mean diffusivity in the right cranial nerve V (CN V) (nodes 27-33 and nodes 55-88) and vertical occipital fasciculus (VOF) (nodes 58-85). Moreover, we found decreased axial diffusivity in the right inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (node 67) and increased radial diffusivity in the CN V (nodes 22-34 and nodes 52-89) and left VOF (nodes 60-66 and nodes 81-85). Meanwhile, WM microstructural changes were correlated with patients' clinical manifestations. We did not find any significant differences in WM volume and the main WM fibre bundle properties between BN patients and HCs. Taken together, these findings provide that BN shows significant brain WM reorganization, but primarily in microstructure (part of WM fibre bundle), which is not sufficient to cause changes in WM volume. The automated fibre quantification analysis could be more sensitive to detect the subtle pathological changes in a point or segment of the WM fibre bundle.

Altered prefrontal activation during the inhibition of eating responses in women with bulimia nervosa

BACKGROUND

The sense of 'loss of control' (LOC), or a feeling of being unable to stop eating or control what or how much one is eating, is the most salient aspect of binge eating. However, the neural alterations that may contribute to this experience and eating behavior remain poorly understood.

METHODS

We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure activation in the prefrontal cortices of 23 women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 23 healthy controls (HC) during two tasks: a novel go/no-go task requiring inhibition of eating responses, and a standard go/no-go task requiring inhibition of button-pressing responses.

RESULTS

Women with BN made more commission errors on both tasks. BN subgroups with the most severe LOC eating (n = 12) and those who felt most strongly that they binge ate during the task (n = 12) showed abnormally reduced bilateral ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) activation associated with eating-response inhibition. In the entire BN sample, lower eating-task activation in right vlPFC was related to more frequent and severe LOC eating, but no group differences in activation were detected on either task when this full sample was compared with HC. BN severity was unrelated to standard-task activation.

CONCLUSIONS

Results provide initial evidence that diminished PFC activation may directly contribute to more severe eating-specific control deficits in BN. Our findings support vmPFC and vlPFC dysfunction as promising treatment targets, and indicate that eating-specific tasks and fNIRS may be useful tools for identifying neural mechanisms underlying dysregulated eating.

Exploration of the relationships between clinical traits and functional connectivity based on surface morphology abnormalities in bulimia nervosa

BACKGROUND

Bulimia nervosa is a recurrent eating disorder with uncertain pathogenesis. Recently, there has been growing interest in using neuroimaging techniques to explore brain structural and functional alterations in bulimia nervosa, but the findings of previous studies have a great number of inconsistencies.

METHODS

Here, we collected anatomical and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 43 bulimia nervosa patients and 34 matched healthy controls (HCs). We applied a surface-based morphology analysis to explore brain cortical morphology differences and a novel surface-based functional connectivity (FC) analysis to investigate functional abnormalities. Principal component analysis was performed to analyze the behavioral data of the participants. We further analyzed the relationships between abnormalities in cortical characteristics or FC and clinical features.

RESULTS

We observed increased greater sulcal depth in the right superior temporal gyrus (STG) and the right medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC) in bulimia nervosa patients than in the HCs. Additionally, the patients exhibited increased FC between the right STG and right ventral tegmental area but decreased function between the right mOFC and right putamen, which was significantly negatively correlated with the first principal component reflecting the severity of bulimia nervosa symptom.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings provide evidence of neuroanatomical and functional abnormalities in bulimia nervosa patients. Moreover, the FC between the right mOFC and right putamen was associated with symptom severity of bulimia nervosa, which may be a neural marker and involved in the neuropathological mechanism of bulimia nervosa.

Changes in cognitive and behavioral control after lamotrigine and intensive dialectical behavioral therapy for severe, multi-impulsive bulimia nervosa: an fMRI case study

PURPOSE

Adults with bulimia nervosa (BN) and co-occurring emotional dysregulation and multiple impulsive behaviors are less responsive to existing interventions. Initial data suggest that the combination of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and a mood stabilizer, lamotrigine, significantly reduces symptoms of affective and behavioral dysregulation in these patients. Identifying candidate neurobiological mechanisms of change for this novel treatment combination may help guide future randomized controlled trials and inform new and targeted treatment development. Here, we examined neurocognitive and symptom changes in a female patient with BN and severe affective and behavioral dysregulation who received DBT and lamotrigine.

METHODS

Go/no-go task performance data and resting-state functional MRI scans were acquired before the initiation of lamotrigine (after 6 weeks in an intensive DBT program), and again after reaching and maintaining a stable dose of lamotrigine. The patient completed a battery of symptom measures biweekly for 18 weeks over the course of treatment.

RESULTS

After lamotrigine initiation, the patient made fewer errors on a response inhibition task and showed increased and new connectivity within frontoparietal and frontolimbic networks involved in behavioral and affective control. Accompanying this symptom improvement, the patient reported marked reductions in bulimic symptoms, behavioral dysregulation, and reactivity to negative affect, along with increases in DBT skills use.

CONCLUSION

Improved response inhibition and cognitive control network connectivity should be further investigated as neurocognitive mechanisms of change with combined DBT and lamotrigine for eating disorders. Longitudinal, controlled trials integrating neuroimaging and symptom measures are needed to fully evaluate the effects of this treatment.

Food-Approach Eating Behaviors and Brain Morphology: The Generation R Study

Food-approach eating behaviors are associated with an increased risk of developing overweight/obesity and binge-eating disorder, while obesity and binge-eating disorder have also been linked with altered brain morphology in adults. To understand these associations, we examined the association of food-approach eating behaviors during childhood with adolescents' brain morphology. The sample included 1,781 adolescents with assessments of eating behaviors at ages 4 and 10 years and brain imaging data at 13 years from a large, population-based cohort. Food approach eating behaviors (enjoyment of food, emotional overeating, and food responsiveness) were assessed using the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Additionally, we assessed binge eating symptoms using two items from the Development and Well-Being Assessment at 13 years of age. Adolescents participated in an MRI procedure and measures of brain morphology, including cerebral white, cerebral gray and subcortical gray matter volumes, were extracted from T1-weighted images processed using FreeSurfer. Enjoyment of food and food responsiveness at the age of 4 and 10 years were positively associated with cerebral white matter and subcortical gray matter volumes at age 13 years (e.g., enjoyment of food at 4 years and cerebral white matter: β = 2.73, 95% CI 0.51, 4.91). Enjoyment of food and food responsiveness at 4 years of age, but not at 10 years, were associated with a larger cerebral gray matter volume at 13 years of age (e.g., enjoyment of food at 4 years: β = 0.24, 95% CI 0.03, 0.45). No statistically significant associations were found for emotional overeating at both ages and brain measurements at 13 years of age. post-hoc analyses showed no associations of food-approach eating behaviors with amygdala or hippocampus. Lastly, we did not observe significant associations of binge-eating symptoms with global brain measurements and a priori-defined regions of interest, including the right frontal operculum, insular and orbitofrontal cortex. Our findings support an association between food-approach eating behaviors, especially enjoyment of food and food responsiveness, and brain morphology in adolescence. Our findings add important knowledge to previous studies that were mostly conducted in adults, by suggesting that the eating behavior-brain link may be visible earlier in life. Further research is needed to determine causality.

Volume and Connectivity Differences in Brain Networks Associated with Cognitive Constructs of Binge Eating

Bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) are characterized by episodes of eating large amounts of food while experiencing a loss of control. Recent studies suggest that the underlying causes of BN/BED consist of a complex system of environmental cues, atypical processing of food stimuli, altered behavioral responding, and structural/functional brain differences compared with healthy controls (HC). In this narrative review, we provide an integrative account of the brain networks associated with the three cognitive constructs most integral to BN and BED, namely increased reward sensitivity, decreased cognitive control, and altered negative affect and stress responding. We show altered activity in BED/BN within several brain networks, specifically in the striatum, insula, prefrontal cortex (PFC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and cingulate gyrus. Numerous key nodes in these networks also differ in volume and connectivity compared with HC. We provide suggestions for how this integration may guide future research into these brain networks and cognitive constructs.

Volumetric Alterations of the Cerebral Cortex in Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are relatively frequent psychiatric disorders that can produce serious consequences at the brain level. In an effort to clarify the neurobiological mechanisms of their pathogenesis, some studies have suggested the existence of modifications of the cortical architecture in eating disorders, but it is unknown whether the alterations described are a cause or consequence of eating disorders. The main objective of this systematic review is to collect the evidence available about the volumetric alterations of the cerebral cortex in eating disorders in adults and their apparent relationship with the pathogenesis of the disease. Initially, 91 articles were found by a search that included the terms anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder, gray matter, cortical thickness (CT), and brain volume. To pare down the articles, the following inclusion criteria were applied: (1) cortical thickness and/or gray matter volume (GMV) in patients with anorexia, bulimia nervosa, or binge-eating disorder was the main measure of the study; and (2) the sample was adult patients aged 18–65. The exclusion criteria were as follows: (1) articles that did not analyze cortical thickness or gray matter volume; (2) studies with patients with comorbidities; and (3) studies in patients who did not meet the DSM-IV/DSM-V criteria. In the first phase of selection, we proceeded to read the titles and abstracts as a first screen, thereby excluding 62 studies, followed by a complete critical reading of the 29 remaining articles. In this last phase, nine studies were excluded because they did not specify the eating disorder subtype, they included adolescents, or they did not measure GMV or CT. Finally, after the above systematic selection process, 20 articles were included in this review. Despite the methodological heterogeneity of the studies, there was some agreement between them. They showed an overall reduction in GMV in eating disorders, as well as alterations in certain regions of the cerebral cortex. Some of the most often mentioned cortical areas were the frontal, cingulate, and right orbitofrontal cortices, the precuneus, the right insula, and some temporoparietal gyri in cases of AN, with greater cortical involvement in frontotemporal and medial orbitofrontal regions in BN and binge eating disorder. Likewise, certain cortical regions, such as the left inferior frontal gyrus, the precuneus, the right superior motor area, the cingulate cortex, the insula, and the medial orbitofrontal sulcus, often remained altered after recovery from AN, making them potential cortical areas involved in the etiopathogenesis of AN. A reduction in GMV in specific areas of the CNS can inform us about the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie eating disorders as well as give us a better understanding of their possible consequences at the brain level.

Subcortical brain volume and cortical thickness in adolescent girls and women with binge eating

OBJECTIVE

Alterations in brain structure have been implicated in the onset and acute phases of several forms of psychopathology. However, there is a dearth of research investigating brain structure in persons with binge eating, contributing to poor understanding of mechanisms associated with binge eating.

METHOD

Adolescent girls and women (aged 14-35 years) with binge eating (n = 56) and group age-matched girls and women without binge eating (n = 26) completed structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and interview-based and self-report assessments of eating disorder and general psychopathology. MRI data were processed using FreeSurfer. Analysis of covariance tested mean differences in subcortical volume and cortical thickness of a priori selected regions of interest between binge-eating and non-binge-eating groups, controlling for age, body mass index, purging frequency, depression, and medication use. Exploratory partial correlations tested associations between brain structure and eating disorder symptoms within participants with binge eating.

RESULTS

We did not observe differences in regional subcortical volume and cortical thickness between girls and women with and without binge eating. Within participants with binge eating, severity of attitudinal eating disorder symptoms was inversely associated with caudal middle frontal gyrus, right precentral gyrus, right postcentral gyrus, superior parietal, left inferior parietal thickness, and left accumbens volume; however, these associations would not survive multiple-comparison corrections.

DISCUSSION

Correlations between attitudinal eating disorder symptoms and frontoparietal thinning may represent a state marker of binge eating. Future research could investigate whether frontoparietal thinning worsens with illness duration or persists beyond binge eating cessation.

Relationship between binge eating and associated eating behaviors with subcortical brain volumes and cortical thickness

BACKGROUND

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most prevalent eating disorder. We examined the presence of binge eating (BE) and three associated eating behaviors in relation to subcortical regional volumes and cortical thickness from brain scans.

METHODS

We processed structural MRI brain scans for 466 individuals from the Nathan Kline Institute Rockland Sample using Freesurfer. We investigated subcortical volumes and cortical thicknesses among those with and without BE and in relation to the scores on dietary restraint, disinhibition, and hunger from the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ). We conducted a whole-brain analysis and a region of analysis (ROI) using a priori regions associated with BE and with the three eating factors. We also compared scores on the three TFEQ factors for the BE and non-BE.

RESULTS

The BE group had higher scores for dietary restraint (p = .013), disinhibition (p = 1.22E-07), and hunger (p = 5.88E-07). In the whole-brain analysis, no regions survived correction for multiple comparisons (FDR corrected p<0.01) for either BE group or interaction with TFEQ. However, disinhibition scores correlated positively with left nucleus accumbens (NAc) volume (p < 0.01 FDR corrected). In the ROI analysis, those with BE also had greater left NAc volume (p = 0.008, uncorrected) compared to non-BE.

LIMITATIONS

Limitations include potential self-report bias on the EDE-Q and TFEQ.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings show that BE and disinhibition scores were each associated with greater volumes in the left NAc, a reward area, consistent with a greater drive and pleasure for food.

Altered regional gray matter volume in Chinese female patients with bulimia nervosa

BACKGROUND

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a psychiatric disorder with unclear pathophysiology. Several studies have associated BN with structural and functional changes in the brain, but findings have been inconsistent. Here we explored this potential association in a small group of Chinese women with BN.

METHODS

This retrospective study examined 34 women with BN and 34 age-matched healthy controls, all of whom underwent T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Voxel-based morphometry was carried out to explore alterations in regional grey matter volume (GMV) that may be associated with BN.

RESULTS

The BN group showed smaller GMV in the left medial superior frontal gyrus (SFGmed.L), right superior temporal gyrus (STG.R), right median cingulate and paracingulate gyri (DCG.R), left median cingulate and paracingulate gyri (DCG.L) and left dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus (SFGdor.L). No regions showing GMV increases in BN were identified. The GMV reduction did not correlate with body mass index, duration of illness, or patients' self-esteem or overall self-evaluation. GMV reduction correlated negatively with age in the SFGmed. L (r = - 0.516, P < 0.005), DCG. R (r = - 0.556, P < 0.005), DCG. L (r = - 0.576, P < 0.05) and SFGdor. L (r = - 0.576, P < 0.005).

CONCLUSIONS

Women with BN show reduced GMV in several brain regions, but it is difficult to know whether these changes are the result of BN pathology or of binge-eating and compensatory behavior. These changes may be associated with impaired inhibitory control, body dissatisfaction and emotion dysregulation.

Neuroimaging and eating disorders

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Eating disorders are severe psychiatric disorders with a suspected complex biopsychosocial cause. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the recent literature on brain imaging in eating disorders.

RECENT FINDINGS

Food restriction as well as binge eating and purging behaviors are associated with lower regional brain volumes or cortical thickness, but those changes largely return to normal with normalization of weight and eating behavior. Computational modeling has started to identify patterns of structural and functional imaging data that classify eating disorder subtypes, which could be used in the future, diagnostically and to better understand disorder-specific psychopathology. The prediction error model, a computational approach to assess dopamine-related brain reward function, helped support a brain-based model for anorexia nervosa. In that model, the conscious motivation to restrict conflicts with body signals that stimulate eating. This conflict causes anxiety and drives a vicious cycle of food restriction.

SUMMARY

Novel brain research supports the notion that eating disorders have distinct neurobiological underpinnings. This new knowledge can be used to describe disease models to patients and develop novel treatments.

The Neurobiology of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are severe psychiatric illnesses with a typical age of onset in adolescence. Brain research in youth and young adults may help us identify specific neurobiology that contributes to onset and maintenance of those disorders. This article provides a state-of-the-art review of our current understanding of the neurobiology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. This includes brain structure and function studies to understand food restriction, binge-eating or purging behaviors, cognitive and emotional factors, as well as interoception. Binge-eating disorder and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder are also discussed, but the literature is still very small.

Subcortical Shape Abnormalities in Bulimia Nervosa

BACKGROUND

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is associated with functional abnormalities in frontostriatal and frontolimbic circuits. Although structural alterations in the frontal portions of these circuits have been observed, this is the first study of subcortical surface morphometry and the largest study of subcortical volume in BN.

METHODS

Anatomical magnetic resonance scans were acquired from 62 female participants with full and subthreshold BN (mean age ± SD, 18.7 ± 4.0 years) and 65 group-matched healthy control participants (mean age ± SD, 19.3 ± 5.7 years). General linear models were used to compare groups and assess the significance of group-by-age interactions on the shape and total volume of 15 subcortical structures (p < .05, familywise error corrected). Associations with illness severity and duration were assessed in the BN group.

RESULTS

Subcortical volumes did not differ across groups, but vertexwise analyses revealed inward shape deformations on the anterior surface of the pallidum in BN relative to control participants that were associated with binge-eating frequency and illness duration. Inward deformations on the ventrolateral thalamus and dorsal amygdala were more pronounced with advancing age in the BN group, and inward deformations on the caudate, putamen, and amygdala were associated with self-induced vomiting frequency.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings point to localized deformations on the surface of subcortical structures in areas that comprise both reward and cognitive control circuits. These deformations were more pronounced among older BN participants and among those with the most severe symptoms. Such precise localization of alterations in subcortical morphometry may ultimately aid in efforts to identify markers of risk and BN persistence.
