Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) induced neurotoxicity has become a growing concern due to its potential adverse effects on the Central Nervous System. Cd is a Heavy Metal (HM) that is released into the environment, through several industrial processes. It poses a risk to the health of the community by polluting air, water, and soil. Cd builds up in the brain and other neural tissues, raising concerns about its effect on the nervous system due to its prolonged biological half-life. Cd can enter into the neurons, hence increasing the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in them and impairing their antioxidant defenses. Cd disrupts the Calcium (Ca2+) balance in neurons, affects the function of the mitochondria, and triggers cell death pathways. As a result of these pathways, the path to the development of many neurological diseases affected by environmental factors, especially Cd, such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is facilitated. There are cognitive deficits associated with long exposure to Cd. Memory disorders are present in both animals and humans. Cd alters the brain's function and performance in critical periods. There are lifelong consequences of Cd exposure during critical brain development stages. The susceptibility to neurotoxic effects is increased by interactions with a variety of risk factors. Cd poses risks to neuronal function and behavior, potentially contributing to neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease (PD) and AD as well as cognitive issues. This article offers a comprehensive overview of Cd-induced neurotoxicity, encompassing risk assessment, adverse effect levels, and illuminating intricate pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous evidence demonstrated the inconsistent associations between metals and anxiety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the individual and joint effects of blood lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se) and manganese (Mn) on anxiety in the general population. METHODS Data of 4000 participants (aged≥20 years) in the study were retrieved from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012. Multiple logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS) logistic analysis, and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were fitted to explore the possible effects of single and mixed metal exposures on anxiety. Moreover, this association was assessed by smoking group. RESULTS In the study, 24.60 % of participants were in an anxiety state. In logistic regression, blood Pb, Cd, Hg, Se and Mn were not significantly associated with anxiety in all participants. After stratified by smoking group, blood Cd was positively associated with anxiety in the current smoking group [P = 0.029, OR (95 %): 1.708(1.063, 3.040)], whereas not in other groups. In RCS regression, we observed a linear dose-response effect of blood Cd on anxiety stratified by smoking group. In WQS analysis, mixed metal exposures were positively associated with anxiety [P = 0.033, OR (95 %): 1.437(1.031, 2.003)], with Cd (33.69 %) contributing the largest weight to the index. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that excessive exposure to Cd is a significant risk factor for anxiety, and the co-exposures to Pb, Cd, Hg, Se and Mn were positively related with the risk of anxiety in current smokers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between Cd exposure and depressive symptoms in Chinese young adults. And to investigate the potential metabolic changes associated with high blood Cd concentrations. METHODS We conducted a cohort study in 2019 and 2021. Blood Cd and depressive symptoms were collected during baseline and follow-up. The nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scores were used to assess depressive symptoms. We used the generalized linear mixed model to estimate the association between blood Cd levels and depressive symptoms. A metabolomic and lipidomic analysis based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was conducted on a total of 679 blood samples. The metabolomic data were analyzed using variance analysis and linear mixed effects models. RESULTS Blood Cd concentrations were significantly associated with increased severity of depression symptoms [odds ratio (OR) 2.07, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-4.11]. Metabolomics analysis found 93 metabolites with significant statistical differences between the lowest blood Cd level group and the highest Cd level group. Among the 93 differential metabolites, 17 were enriched in 7 differential metabolic pathways. CONCLUSIONS Blood Cd was associated with increased severity of depression symptoms in Chinese young adults. Cd exposure may affect depressive symptoms by inducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and disrupting amino acid metabolism.

Abstract
Exposure to cadmium (Cd), a toxic heavy metal classified as an environmental endocrine disruptor, can exert significant toxicity in both animals and humans. However, the potential effects of Cd exposure on socioemotional behaviors are still poorly understood, as are the underlying mechanisms. In the present study, employing a series of behavioral tests as well as 16 S rRNA sequencing analysis, we investigated the long-term effects of Cd exposure on socioemotional behaviors and their associated mechanisms in mice based on the brain-gut interaction theory. The results showed that postweaning exposure to Cd reduced the ability to resist depression, decreased social interaction, subtly altered sexual preference, and changed the composition of the gut microbiota in male mice during adolescence. These findings provided direct evidence for the deleterious effects of exposure to Cd in the postweaning period on socioemotional behaviors later in adolescence, and suggested that these effects of Cd exposure may be linked to changes in the gut microbiota.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to heavy metals considered a major risk factor for mental health. OBJECTIVE Examining how heavy metals in blood are associated with depression in individuals of various body mass indexes. METHODS A total sample of 15,560 individuals was screened, with 4355 participants finally enrolled to study. The PHQ-9 was used to assess participants' depressive symptoms. RESULTS A logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the levels of heavy metals in the blood and the depression. Serum cadmium levels were found to be associated with risk of depression, with an odds ratio of 2.247 (95 % CI: 1.584-3.244). However, no significant correlations were observed between depression and blood levels of lead, selenium, and manganese. Subgroup analysis was performed and found that higher Cd concentrations were associated with a greater risk of depression at the same BMI. With the same Cd concentration, the risk of depression was lowest when participants' BMI was ≥30 kg/m2 and increased with increasing BMI when participants' BMI was <30 kg/m2. LIMITATIONS It is not possible to analyze the effect of external exposure to Cd. CONCLUSION Cd in blood may be positively correlated with depression in American adults, and the effect of this trend is different in people with different body mass indices. With the increase in BMI, the risk gradually rises. However, it is lowest among obese people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cadmium, a toxic metal, is widely encountered in diverse environmental contexts. Despite its pervasive exposure, there is limited research on the association between blood cadmium levels and depression, especially among females. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between blood cadmium levels and depression in adult women. METHODS Data spanning 2005-2016 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were selected. Depression was diagnosed with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, score ≥10). Multiple logistic regression, multiple linear regression, and smoothed curve fitting were used to investigate the relationship between blood cadmium and depression. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed to evaluate the stability of this association across populations. RESULTS A total of 1,173 individuals were diagnosed with depression. The heightened prevalence of depression was linked to increased blood cadmium levels, a trend that persisted even after quartering blood cadmium. In the fully adjusted model, each incremental unit of blood cadmium was associated with a 33% rise in the prevalence of depression (OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.21-1.45). Participants in the highest quartile were 63% more likely to experience depression compared to those in the lowest quartile of blood cadmium (OR = 1.63, 95% CI: 1.15-2.30), and PHQ-9 score increased by 0.73 (β = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.30-1.17). This positive association may be relevant to the general population. CONCLUSIONS Blood cadmium levels are associated with depression in adult women, and this association varies by age and smoking status.

Abstract
Psychotropic effect of Crocus sativus L. (family Iridaceae) biologically active chemical compounds are quite well documented and they can therefore be used in addition to the conventional pharmacological treatment of depression. This systematic review on antidepressant compounds in saffron crocus and their mechanisms of action and side effects is based on publications released between 1995−2022 and data indexed in 15 databases under the following search terms: antidepressant effect, central nervous system, Crocus sativus, cognitive impairement, crocin, crocetin, depression, dopamine, dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, picrocrocin, phytotherapy, neurotransmitters, safranal, saffron, serotonin, and biologically active compounds. The comparative analysis of the publications was based on 414 original research papers. The investigated literature indicates the effectiveness and safety of aqueous and alcoholic extracts and biologically active chemical compounds (alkaloids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, flavonoid, phenolic, saponins, and terpenoids) isolated from various organs (corms, leaves, flower petal, and stigmas) in adjuvant treatment of depression and anxiety. Monoamine reuptake inhibition, N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonism, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-α agonism are the main proposed mechanism of the antidepressant action. The antidepressant and neuroprotective effect of extract components is associated with their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. The mechanism of their action, interactions with conventional drugs and other herbal preparations and the safety of use are not fully understood; therefore, further detailed research in this field is necessary. The presented results regarding the application of C. sativus in phytotherapy are promising in terms of the use of herbal preparations to support the treatment of depression. This is particularly important given the steady increase in the incidence of this disease worldwide and social effects.

Abstract
Objective To explore the association between depression and blood metal elements, we conducted this machine learning model fitting research. Methods Datasets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2017–2018 were downloaded (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes). After screening, 3,247 aging samples with 10 different metals [lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), inorganic mercury (InHg), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethyl mercury (EtHg)] were included. Eight machine learning algorithms were compared for analyzing metal and depression. After comparison, XGBoost showed optimal effects. Poisson regression and XGBoost model (a kind of decision tree algorithm) were conducted to find the risk factors and prediction for depression. Results A total of 344 individuals out of 3247 participants were diagnosed with depression. In the Poisson model, we found Cd (β = 0.22, P = 0.00000941), EtHg (β = 3.43, P = 0.003216), and Hg (β=-0.15, P = 0.001524) were related with depression. XGBoost model was the suitable algorithm for the evaluation of depression, the accuracy was 0.89 with 95%CI (0.87, 0.92) and Kappa value was 0.006. Area under the curve (AUC) was 0.88. After that, an online XGBoost application for depression prediction was developed. Conclusion Blood heavy metals, especially Cd, EtHg, and Hg were significantly associated with depression and the prediction of depression was imperative.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) exposure is recognized as an important risk factor for psychological health, but suitable physical activity may relieve depression. However, it remains unknown whether physical activity (PA) can reduce the effect of cadmium exposure on depression. Therefore, a cross-sectional data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015-2018 was used. The Nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to assess depression among the participants. PA was calculated according to the metabolic equivalent (MET), weekly frequency, and duration of each activity. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were used to examine the associations of Cd and depression. A total of 5560 adults aged 20 years and above were finally included in this study. The results indicated a positive correlation between blood Cd and depression. The multivariate-adjusted ORs (95% CI) of the highest quartile were 2.290 (1.754-2.990) for depression, which was still significant after controlling other heavy metals (P < 0.05). Under Cd exposure, the high intensity of physical activity group had the lowest risk of depression (OR = 2.226, 95%CI: 1.447-3.425), while the group with no physical activity had the highest risk (OR = 2.443, 95%CI: 1.382-4.318). Our results indicate that inner Cd exposure may be a risk factor for depression, and physical activity can moderate this relationship to some degree.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review was to assess if cadmium and lead levels are linked to anxiety and depression. A systematic literature search was conducted to identify observational trials evaluating the impact of cadmium and lead on the incidence and phenotype of depression and anxiety. The search identified 1059 records. Overall eighteen studies comprising 28,304 participants with a female predominance (n = 19,483; 69%) were included. Cadmium and lead levels were analyzed in eight and thirteen studies, respectively. Five studies found an association between blood cadmium levels and depression, among them three trials which reported that individuals in the highest quartile of blood cadmium had higher odds of showing depressive symptoms. Sex and smoking status were found to be potential confounders of cadmium impact on the depressive phenotype. None of the studies found association between the level of anxiety and blood cadmium levels. Nine studies demonstrated association between depressive symptoms and blood lead concentration. High lead levels may be associated with anxiety and neurobehavioral deficits. There are many factors that influence both the levels of cadmium and lead, and the severity of depression and anxiety in the respondents. There is no clear evidence for the impact of cadmium and lead levels on the development of depressive symptoms but a lot of indirect evidence points to this.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Despite a call for better understanding of the role of environmental pollutant influences on mental health and the tremendous public health burden of mental health, this issue receives far less attention than many other effects of pollutants. Here we summarize the body of literature on non-occupational environmental pollutant exposures and adult depression, anxiety, and suicide-in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and PsychINFO through the end of year 2018. RECENT FINDINGS One hundred twelve articles met our criteria for further review. Of these, we found 88 articles on depression, 33 on anxiety, and 22 on suicide (31 articles covered multiple outcomes). The earliest article was published in 1976, and the most frequent exposure of interest was air pollution (n = 33), followed by secondhand smoke (n = 20), metals (n = 18), noise (n = 17), and pesticides (n = 10). Other exposures studied less frequently included radiation, magnetic fields, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), volatile organic compounds, solvents, and reactive sulfur compounds. The current literature, although limited, clearly suggests many kinds of environmental exposures may be risk factors for depression, anxiety, and suicide. For several pollutants, important limitations exist with many of the studies. Gaps in the body of research include a need for more longitudinal, life-course studies, studies that can measure cumulative exposures as well as shorter-term exposures, studies that reduce the possibility of reverse causation, and mechanistic studies focused on neurotoxic exposures.

Abstract
Todays, bioactive compounds extracted from Spirulina platensis have been intensively studied for their therapeutical values. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of S. platensis extract on DNA damage and chromosomal aberrations induced by cadmium in rats. Four groups of male albino rats (n = 7 rats) were used. The first group served as a control group and received distilled water. The second group was exposed intraperitoneally to cadmium chloride (CdCl2) (3.5 mg/kg body weight dissolved in 2 ml distilled water). The third group included the rats that were orally treated with S. platensis extract (1 g/kg dissolved in 5 ml distilled water, every other day for 30 days). The fourth group included the rats that were intraperitoneally and orally exposed to cadmium chloride and S. platensis, respectively. The experiment in all groups was extended for 60 days. The results of cadmium-mediated toxicity revealed significant genetic effects (DNA fragmentation, deletion or disappearance of some base pairs of DNA, and appearance of few base pairs according to ISSR-PCR analysis). Moreover, chromosomes showed structural aberrations such as reduction of chromosomal number, chromosomal ring, chromatid deletions, chromosomal fragmentations, and dicentric chromosomes. Surprisingly, S. platensis extract plus CdCl2-treated group showed less genetic effects compared with CdCl2 alone. Further, S. platensis extract upon CdCl2 toxicity was associated with less chromosomal aberration number and nearly normal appearance of DNA fragments as indicated by the bone marrow and ISSR-PCR analysis, respectively. In conclusion, the present novel study showed that co-treatment with S. platensis extract could reduce the genotoxic effects of CdCl2 in rats.
