Abstract
The preceding decades have seen an extensive emergence of the harmful effects of tobacco smoke on systemic health. Among the various compounds of tobacco, nicotine is one of the principal, potentially hazardous, and toxic components which is an oxidant agent that can affect both men's and women's fertility. Nicotine exerts its effect by modulating the expression of transmembrane ligand-gated ion channels called nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The activities of female reproduction might be disrupted by exposure to nicotine at various sites, such as the ovary or reproductive tract. It's been demonstrated that nicotine might cause oxidative stress, apoptosis, hormonal imbalance, abnormalities in chromosomal segregation, impact oocyte development, and disruption in ovarian morphology and functions. This review paper summarizes the findings and provides an updated overview of the evidence on the harmful effects of nicotine use on women's reproductive health and the resulting detrimental impacts on the body. Additionally, it provides the detailed possible mechanisms involved in impairing reproductive processes like folliculogenesis, oocyte maturation, steroidogenesis, and pregnancy in different animal species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) are known to be associated with lifestyle determinants such as smoking and oral contraception (OC) use. When measuring AMH in clinical practice, it is essential to know which factors may influence circulating levels or ovarian reserve in general. OBJECTIVE AND RATIONALE To date, there is no systematic review or summarizing consensus of the nature and magnitude of the relation between AMH and modifiable lifestyle factors. The purpose of this review was to systematically assess the evidence on association of lifestyle behaviors with circulating AMH levels. SEARCH METHODS We performed a pre-registered systematic review of publications in Embase and PubMed on the lifestyle factors BMI, smoking, OC use, alcohol consumption, caffeine consumption, physical activity, and waist-hip ratio (WHR) in relation to circulating AMH levels up to 1 November 2023. The search strategy included terms such as 'Anti-Mullerian hormone', 'lifestyle', and 'women'. Studies were considered eligible if the association between at least one of the lifestyle factors of interest and AMH was assessed in adult women. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Study Quality Assessment Tools of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The results were presented as ranges of the most frequently used association measure for studies that found a significant association in the same direction. OUTCOMES A total of 15 072 records were identified, of which 65 studies were eligible for inclusion, and 66.2% of the studies used a cross-sectional design. The majority of studies investigating BMI, smoking, OC use, and physical activity reported significant inverse associations with AMH levels. For WHR, alcohol, and caffeine use, the majority of studies did not find an association with AMH. For all determinants, the effect measures of the reported associations were heterogeneous. The mean difference in AMH levels per unit increase in BMI ranged from -0.015 to -0.2 ng/ml in studies that found a significant inverse association. The mean difference in AMH levels for current smokers versus non-smokers ranged from -0.4 to -1.1 ng/ml, and -4% to -44%, respectively. For current OC use, results included a range in relative mean differences in AMH levels of -17% to -31.1%, in addition to a decrease of 11 age-standardized percentiles, and an average decrease of 1.97 ng/ml after 9 weeks of OC use. Exercise interventions led to a decrease in AMH levels of 2.8 pmol/l to 13.2 pmol/l after 12 weeks in women with polycystic ovary syndrome or a sedentary lifestyle. WIDER IMPLICATIONS Lifestyle factors are associated with differences in AMH levels and thus should be taken into account when interpreting individual AMH measurements. Furthermore, AMH levels can be influenced by the alteration of lifestyle behaviors. While this can be a helpful tool for clinical and lifestyle counseling, the nature of the relation between the observed differences in AMH and the true ovarian reserve remains to be assessed. Abstract
As a public health problem, premature ovarian insufficiency leads to infertility or sub-fertility. In addition to premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) increases the lifetime risk of bone fragility, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment. To investigate the effects of environmental pollutants on the occurrence of POI and explore its mechanism, we conducted a computer search for articles published in electronic databases by December 13, 2022. Three reviewers independently examined all included studies and scored the qualities of included studies using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale criteria. In this meta-analysis, eight clinical studies as well as ten preclinical findings showed a pooled OR of 2.331 and 95% CI of 1.968-2.760. This confirms that environmental pollutants, including POPs, heavy metals, PAEs, PAHs, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, and cigarette smoke, are indeed significant risk factors for POI. In addition, it is demonstrated from the results of this study that signaling pathway of calcium and PI3K Akt and Xpnpep2, Col1, Col3, Col4, Cx43, Egr3, Tff1, and Ptgs2 genes may all be involved in the process. Environmental pollutants, including POPs, heavy metals, PAEs, PAHs, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, and cigarette smoke, are indeed significant risk factors for POI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study examined the association of smoking with ovarian reserve in a cross-sectional study of 207 women enrolled in the Louisville Tobacco Smoke Exposure, Genetic Susceptibility, and Infertility (LOUSSI) Study and assessed effect modification by NAT2 acetylator phenotype. METHODS Information on current smoking status was collected using a structured questionnaire and confirmed by cotinine assay. Serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were used to assess ovarian reserve. Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) was defined as AMH <1ng/mL. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the NAT2 gene, which metabolizes toxins found in cigarette smoke, were analyzed to determine NAT2 acetylator status. Linear and logistic regression were used to determine the effects of smoking on ovarian reserve and evaluate effect modification by NAT2. Regression analyses were stratified by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) status and adjusted for age. RESULTS Current smoking status, either passive or active as measured by urinary cotinine assay, was not significantly associated with DOR. For dose-response assessed using self-report, the odds of DOR increased significantly for every additional cigarette currently smoked (Odds ratio, OR:1.08; 95% confidence interval, 95%CI:1.01-1.15); additionally, every 1 pack-year increase in lifetime exposure was associated with an increased odds of DOR among women without PCOS (OR: 1.08 95%CI: 0.99-1.18). These trends appear to be driven by the heavy or long-term smokers. Effect modification by NAT2 genotype was not established. CONCLUSION A history of heavy smoking may indicate increased risk of diminished ovarian reserve.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Are there genetic variants that interact with smoking to reduce reproductive lifespan in East-Asian women? SUMMARY ANSWER Our study corroborates several recently identified genetic loci associated with reproductive lifespan and highlights specific genetic predispositions that may interact with smoking status to adversely affect reproductive lifespan in East-Asian women. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Epidemiological data as well as evaluations on genetic predisposition to smoke indicate on the importance of smoking in adverse effects on reproductive lifespan in women. However, there are no previous smoking and gene interaction studies for reproductive traits in East-Asian women. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This population-based prospective cohort study comprised 11 643 East-Asian Chinese women with overlapping genome-wide genotyping and reproductive data. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS We performed a genome-wide association study for reproductive lifespan in women (n = 11 643) from the Singapore Chinese Health Study (SCHS) and carried out a genome-wide interaction study to identify loci that interacted with smoking status to affect age of natural menopause and reproductive-time. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Two known loci associated with menopause, rs113430717 (near HMCES, chromosome 3, Pmeta = 5.72 × 10-15) and rs3020136 (near RAD21, chromosome 8, Pmeta = 1.38 × 10-8) were observed beyond genome-wide levels of association with age at menopause in this study. For reproductive lifespan, the genome-wide association observed at rs79784106 (chromosome 3, Pmeta = 5.05 × 10-12) was in linkage disequilibrium with the menopause lead single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs113430717). Four additional loci, first reported to be associated with menopause, were also associated with reproductive lifespan in our study (PAdj between 7.42 × 10-5 to 4.51 × 10-3). A significant interaction was observed between smoking and an East-Asian specific SNP, rs140146885, for reduced reproductive lifespan, per copy of the minor C allele (beta = -1.417 years, Pinteraction = 2.31 × 10-10). This interaction was successfully replicated in additional independent samples (beta = -1.389 years, Pinteraction = 6.78 × 10-3). Another known variant associated with menopause, rs11031006 (near FSHB), was also observed to interact with smoking status to reduce age at menopause in our dataset (beta = -0.450 years, Padj = 0.042). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The modest sample size of the replication datasets used likely affected the statistical power to firmly replicate all identified novel loci observed in our smoking interaction analyses. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Age of natural menopause and reproductive lifespan have clear genetic predispositions with distinct ethnic differences, and they may be adversely truncated by lifestyle factors such as smoking, which can pose a significant impact on the reproductive lifespan and future health outcomes in women. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive lifetime. On average, natural menopause occurs at 51 years of age. However, some women report an earlier age of menopause than the national average. This can be problematic for women who delay starting a family. Moreover, early onset of menopause is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, depression, osteoporosis, and premature death. This review investigates associations between exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and earlier onset of menopause. RECENT FINDINGS Recent data suggest exposure to certain EDCs may accelerate reproductive aging and contribute to earlier onset of menopause. Human and rodent-based studies identify positive associations between exposure to certain EDCs/environmental contaminants and reproductive aging, earlier onset of menopause, and occurrence of vasomotor symptoms. These findings increase our understanding of the detrimental effects of EDCs on female reproduction and will help lead to the development of strategies for the treatment/prevention of EDC-induced reproductive aging.

Abstract
Background: Infertility is a world-wide problem and one third females. Over the years, anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) has emerged as a major marker of ovarian reserve. There is also increasing interest in determining the factors which can impact AMH levels. Aims: To correlate the association of reproductive and lifestyle factors on AMH levels in women of Indian origin. Settings and Design: Multicentric cross sectional study. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted using data extracted from the patient records of seven private fertility practices located in North India. Women who were attending these clinics for fertility treatment were requested to fill the questionnaire related to reproductive and lifestyle factors. Statistical Analysis used: Our outcome variable was level of AMH measured in the past 3 months, and was assessed as normal or low. All analyses were conducted using STATA 17. Results: We found a direct association of low AMH with increasing age, short cycles, amenorrhea and women with family history of premature menopause. We found a direct correlation of high AMH and women with polycystic ovary syndrome and those whose partners had Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OATS) or azoospermia. There was no correlation with smoking, sleep, diet, body mass index, cell phone or laptop use in our study. Conclusion: Reproductive and lifestyle factors may affect ovarian reserve and but there was a dearth of human studies in this area. To the best of our knowledge this is the first human study on the effect of AMH on Laptop and Cell phone use. We urgently need more studies to confirm or refute our findings so that we can counsel our patients well.

Abstract
Background: The smoking behavior among young adult women causes health issues and has effects on ethical norms, especially femininity and gender. A woman smoker usually has an intention to quit and several factors have been perceived to be related to this action according to the Health Belief Model (HBM). Design and Methods: This study was conducted cross-sectionally to analyze the correlation between young adult women’s intention to stop smoking with perceived factors in the construction of HBM. A sample of 58 young adult women smokers and aged between 15-30 years were selected through the use of a purposive sampling technique in 2018. Results: The results showed the intention to stop smoking has a significant correlation with perceived susceptibility (P=0.036), perceived severity (P=0.028), perceived benefits (P=0.011), perceived barriers (P=0.003), and perceived self-efficacy (P=0.005). This means there was a significant correlation between the intention of young adult smokers to quit smoking and the perceived factors of HBM. Conclusions: The intention of stop smoking behavior among women smokers has a significant correlation with the perceived factors of the Health Belief Model construct, which includes perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and perceived self-efficacy. Significance for public health Women smokers have a high tendency of wanting to quit based on self-encouragement as well as the pressure from the surrounding social environment. The encouragement can be in the form of awareness of illnesses and diseases caused by smoking or other reasons relating to gender. This paper describes the correlation of these factors and their influence on the desire of young adult women smokers to quit smoking were analyzed through the construction of the Health Belief Model (HBM).

Abstract
Background The incidence of Cesarean has increased in recent years. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of cesarean section on ovarian reserve. This is a prospective cohort study from January 2016 to November 2017. Inclusion criteria included singleton primigravid pregnant women whose gestational age was above 37 weeks. Exclusion criteria included history of infertility, pelvic surgery, underlying chronic diseases, any adverse pregnancy outcome and postpartum complication in current pregnancy and hormonal medication within six months of delivery. Anti-Mullerian hormone was measured at the admission time for delivery. The type of delivery was determined based on obstetrics indications. Six months after delivery, antral follicle count was performed and anti-Mullerian hormone was measured again. Result(s) First blood sample was taken from 730 women. After excluding 550 women, the second blood sample was taken from 180 participants. The mean of first anti-Mullerian hormone in women with cesarean and vaginal delivery were 1.01 ng/mL (95% CI 0.82 to 1.18) and 1.18 ng/mL (95% CI 0.96 to 1.40) respectively (P = 0.211). The mean of second anti-Mullerian hormone in women with cesarean and vaginal delivery were 4.77 ng/mL (95% CI:3.91 to 5.63) and 4.92 ng/mL (95% CI: 4.01 to 5.82) respectively (P = 0.818). No statistically significant difference existed in total AFC between cesarean and vaginal delivery groups (MD: 0.41, 95% CI: − 1.05 to 1.89, P = 0.576). Conclusion Antral follicle count and anti-Mullerian hormone, six month after delivery, are not affected by delivery mode even after adjusting for women’s age, baseline Anti-Mullerian hormone, body mass index, gestational age at delivery, breastfeeding, postpartum menstruation, neonatal sex and weight. Based on our best knowledge, this is the first report that investigates the effects of delivery mode on ovarian reserve. Decreased fertility following cesarean has been shown in some previous studies but most of them had assessed this association based on the incidence of subsequent pregnancy. Since subsequent pregnancy can be influenced by several confounding factors, we investigated the effect of cesarean on fertility using its impact on anti-Mullerian hormone levels and antral follicle count. We hope that this study will be a beginning of more detailed studies in this field. We believe that this link is yet to be studied.

Abstract
This study was designed to assess the relationship between serum levels of anti-Müllerian hormone and 25-hydroxy vitamin D in chronic kidney disease male patients. For that, serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D and anti-Müllerian hormone along with follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, prolactin, total testosterone and estradiol were assayed in 59 patients with different stages of chronic kidney disease and 21 healthy participants. Compared to controls, serum levels of anti-Müllerian hormone and 25-hydroxy vitamin D were significantly decreased in patients with chronic kidney disease. The decreased anti-Müllerian hormone level correlated positively with estimated glomerular filtration rate and serum levels of testosterone and 25-hydroxy vitamin D. Meanwhile, it was negatively correlated with age and serum levels of urea, creatinine, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone and prolactin. 25-Hydroxy vitamin D and luteinising hormone explained the 65.9% variability of anti-Müllerian hormone in a multiple linear regression model. However, anti-Müllerian hormone in crude correlation was more strongly associated with serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D than luteinising hormone. In conclusion, serum level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D might be a determinant factor of anti-Müllerian hormone level, and their relationship might explain in part the dysfunction of Sertoli cells and the impaired testicular functions in chronic kidney disease male patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to determine whether the assays exhibit an interaction with age and exhibit heterogeneous age related declines in AMH. Apart of chronological age, AMH variation was investigated with relation to menstrual cycle day (MCD). The goal implicates two questions: Are distributions of AMH concentrations homogenous after adjustment for the specific AMH assay? Does age-assay product has an effect on AMH depletion? METHODS The study was conducted by examining results of AMH tests performed for 12,917 women with four types of AMH assays: Immunotech I generation kit (IMI, 4016 samples), Beckman Coulter II generation kit RUO (BCII RUO, 3430 samples), Beckman Coulter II generation kit with IVD certificate (BCII IVD, 830 samples), and Ansh Labs I generation kit (AnshLabs, 4641 samples). Statistical analysis included ACNOVA and least square regression technique. RESULTS Menstrual cycle day has no effect on AMH measurements. On the other hand, AMH values differed substantially between the four assays, with a marked discordance in the rate of age-related AMH decline for the four assays (ranging from -8.16% (95% CI: -8.79, -7.54) to -11.53% (95% CI -12.20, -10.87), with a significant interaction between age and assay. CONCLUSIONS (1) The distribution of AMH concentration is heterogeneous after controlling the age across assays; (2) the rate of AMH decline as a function of age is different for the four manual AMH ELISA assays.

Abstract
Diminished fertility and poor ovarian response pose a conundrum to the experts in the field of reproductive medicine. There is limited knowledge about the risk factors of diminished ovarian reserve other than the iatrogenic ones. One of the leading causes of infertility in women today is diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). DOR is characterized by a low number of eggs in a woman's ovaries and/or with poor quality of the remaining eggs, which boils down to impaired development of the existing eggs, even with assisted reproductive techniques. A good number of such women with low ovarian reserve may conceive with their own eggs, if they are given individualized treatment that is tailored for their profile. Such patients should be counseled appropriately for an aggressive approach towards achieving fertility. The sooner the treatment is started, the better the chances of pregnancy.

Abstract
Ovarian reserve is a complex clinical phenomenon influenced by age, genetics, and environmental variables. Although it is challenging to predict the rate of an individual's ovarian reserve decline, clinicians are often asked for advice about fertility potential and/or recommendations regarding the pursuit of fertility treatment options. The purpose of this review is to summarize the state-of-the-art of ovarian reserve testing, providing a guide for the obstetrician/gynecologist generalist and reproductive endocrinologist. The ideal ovarian reserve test should be convenient, be reproducible, display little if any intracycle and intercycle variability, and demonstrate high specificity to minimize the risk of wrongly diagnosing women as having diminished ovarian reserve and accurately identify those at greatest risk of developing ovarian hyperstimulation prior to fertility treatment. Evaluation of ovarian reserve can help to identify patients who will have poor response or hyperresponse to ovarian stimulation for assisted reproductive technology. Ovarian reserve testing should allow individualization of treatment protocols to achieve optimal response while minimizing safety risks. Ovarian reserve testing may inform patients regarding their reproductive lifespan and menopausal timing as well as aid in the counselling and selection of treatment for female cancer patients of reproductive age who receive gonadotoxic therapy. In addition, it may aid in establishing the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome and provide insight into its severity. While there is currently no perfect ovarian reserve test, both antral follicular count and antimüllerian hormone have good predictive value and are superior to day-3 follicle-stimulating hormone. The convenience of untimed sampling, age-specific values, availability of an automated platform, and potential standardization of antimüllerian hormone assay make this test the preferred biomarker for the evaluation of ovarian reserve in women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate exposure to tobacco, marijuana, and indoor heating/cooking sources in relation to antimüllerian hormone (AMH) levels. DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis in a sample of premenopausal women (n = 913) enrolled in the Sister Study cohort (n = 50,884). SETTING Not applicable. PATIENT(S) Women, ages 35-54 years at time of enrollment, with an archived serum sample and at least one intact ovary and classified as premenopausal. INTERVENTION(S) Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Serum AMH (ng/mL) levels ascertained by ultrasensitive ELISA assay. RESULT(S) Lower AMH levels were associated with sources of indoor heating, including burning wood (-36.0%; 95% confidence interval [CI], -55.7%, -7.8%) or artificial fire logs (-45.8%; 95% CI, -67.2%, -10.4%) at least 10 times/year in a residential indoor stove/fireplace. Lower AMH levels were also observed in women who were current smokers of ≥20 cigarettes/day relative to nonsmokers (-56.2%; 95% CI, -80.3%, -2.8%) and in women with 10+ years of adult environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure (-31.3%; 95% CI, -51.3%, -3.1%), but no associations were observed for marijuana use. CONCLUSION(S) We confirmed previously reported findings of lower AMH levels in current heavy smokers and also found associations for long-term ETS exposure and indoor burning of wood or artificial fire logs. These findings suggest that combustion by-products from common exposures can have toxic effects on the human ovary.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether or not cigarette smoking, alcohol and caffeine intake are related to two indicators of ovarian age-anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study of 477 women with a recent index spontaneous abortion (SA) (105 trisomic, 93 non-trisomic) or livebirth (LB) (279) with hormones measured on days 2-4 of an apparently normal menstrual cycle after the index pregnancy. RESULTS Current smoking is associated with about a 15% increase in median FSH (β for ln(FSH)=0.14, 95% CI 0.03,0.25). It is not significantly related to AMH (β for ln(AMH)=-0.25, 95% CI -0.56,0.06). Neither alcohol 2-7days per week nor caffeine 122-<553mg per day is independently related to AMH or FSH. CONCLUSIONS The observation that current smoking is associated with FSH, but not with AMH, suggests that current smoking either impairs the development of antral follicles or dysregulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. The absence of an association with AMH argues against mechanisms related to accelerated follicle atresia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few data exist regarding anti-Müllerian hormone, a marker of ovarian reserve, in relation to environmental factors with potential ovarian toxicity. METHODS This analysis included 420 women from Limpopo, South Africa studied in 2010-2011. Women were administered comprehensive questionnaires, and plasma concentrations of anti-Müllerian hormone and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane were determined. We used separate multivariable models to examine the associations between natural log-transformed anti-Müllerian hormone concentration (ng/ml) and each of the lifestyle, reproductive, and environmental factors of interest, adjusted for age, body mass index, education, and parity. RESULTS The median age of women was 24 years (interquartile range [IQR] = 22 to 26); the median anti-Müllerian hormone concentration was 3.1 ng/ml (IQR = 2.0 to 6.0). Women who reported indoor residual spraying in homes with painted walls (indicative of exposure to pyrethroids) had 25% lower (95% confidence interval [CI] = -39%, -8%) anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations compared with women who reported no spraying. Little evidence of decreased anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations was observed among women with the highest dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane levels. Compared with women who used an electric stove, no association was observed among women who cooked indoors over open wood fires. The findings also suggested lower anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations among women who drank coffee (-19% [95% CI = -31%, -5%]) or alcohol (-21% [95% CI = -36%, -3%]). CONCLUSIONS These are among the first data regarding anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations relative to pesticides and indoor air pollution. Our results are suggestive of decreased ovarian reserve associated with exposure to pyrethroid pesticides, which is consistent with laboratory animal data.

Abstract
Male patients with terminal renal failure are often infertile and exhibit an abnormal sex hormone pattern in plasma. We studied patients in all chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages to determine plasma levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a Sertoli cell-derived marker, and other sex hormones. Seventy-eight male patients with CKD stages 1-5 and a median age of 40 years (22-50 years), as well as 20 healthy controls with a median age of 37 years (26-44 years), were enrolled. The CKD patients were evenly distributed; 18 with CKD stages 1-2, 19 with CKD stage 3, 19 with CKD stage 4, and 22 with CKD stage 5. Cystatin C, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, sex hormone-binding globulin, testosterone, and AMH levels in plasma were analysed. AMH was analysed using the Ansh Labs UltraSensitive AMH assay. Several changes occurred in plasma levels of sex hormones in male patients with CKD. Plasma AMH levels were lower in CKD stages 1-4 by 30% (p = 0.041) and by 70% (p < 0.001) in CKD stage 5 compared with controls. Plasma luteinizing hormone and prolactin levels were higher and testosterone levels were lower compared with controls. The pathophysiological role of this reduction in AMH is unclear, but can be linked to altered Sertoli cell function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The ovarian reserve of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may be affected by disease activity and medication use. Studies have found that patients with SLE have similar fertility rates as healthy women of the same age. The goal of the present study was to investigate the ovarian reserve of patients with SLE by measuring anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels, and compare it to that of healthy controls. METHOD This was a case-control study performed on 80 premenopausal women, of whom 40 fulfilled the 1997 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for SLE and 40 healthy controls paired by oral contraceptive use. Serum concentrations of AMH in peripheral venous blood were measured using a human AMH ELISA kit (CUSABIO, Wuhan, China). RESULTS AMH serum levels did not differ between patients with SLE and controls (22.79 ± 17.32 ng/ml versus 21.41 ± 16.22 ng/ml, respectively, p = 0.7), even after adjusting for age (21.03 ± 2.074 ng/ml versus 23.97 ± 2.71 ng/ml; p = 0.5). AHM levels were not significantly correlated with disease duration (r = 0.2; p = 0.3), body mass index (r = 0.2; p = 0.2) and disease activity (SLEDAI (r = 0.1; p = 0.7)) and damage indices (SLICC (r = 0.1; p = 0.7)). No associations were found between AMH and ethnicity, current smoking, as well as current or prior use of cyclophosphamide and other immunosuppressants. CONCLUSION In this cross-sectional study, women with SLE demonstrated similar AMH levels as healthy controls, suggesting preserved ovarian reserve in this population.

Abstract
Oocyte number and quality decline with age; however, fertility varies significantly even among women of the same age. Various measures have been developed to predict response to ovarian stimulation and reproductive potential. Evaluation of ovarian reserve can identify patients who may experience poor response or hyper-response to exogenous gonadotrophins and can aid in the personalization of treatment to achieve good response and minimize risks. In recent years, two key methods, antral follicle count (AFC), an ultrasound biomarker of follicle number, and the concentration of serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), a hormone biomarker of follicle number, have emerged as preferred methods for assessing ovarian reserve. In this review, a live debate held at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine 2013 Annual Meeting is expanded upon to compare the predictive values, merits, and disadvantages of AFC and AMH level. An ovarian reserve measure without limitations has not yet been discovered, although both AFC and AMH have good predictive value. Published evidence, however, as well as the objectivity and potential standardization of AMH level and the convenience of testing any time throughout the menstrual cycle, leans towards AMH level becoming the gold-standard biomarker to evaluate ovarian reserve and predict ovarian response to stimulation.

Abstract
Despite considerable research, the pathogenesis of prostate cancer remains poorly understood. Meanwhile, PSA testing has shifted prostate cancer case populations for study to include a greater proportion of asymptomatic and indolent disease. Thus, efforts to identify prostate cancer biomarkers-particularly for aggressive disease-are required to elucidate pathogenesis and aid screening efficacy. Current evidence suggests that decreased circulating concentrations of the testis-derived, TGFβ family peptide hormone-anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH)-may be associated with prostate cancer pathogenesis. To test this hypothesis, we measured AMH concentrations in prediagnostic (cohort baseline) sera using the Beckman Coulter AMH Gen II ELISA in 1,000 cases and 1,000 controls nested within the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. Controls were frequency matched to cases on age at entry, enrollment year, and years of follow-up. Unconditional logistic regression models, adjusted for age at randomization, were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). We found that prediagnostic serologic AMH concentrations were not significantly associated with total (ORQ4 vs. Q1 = 1.15; 95% CI, 0.89-1.48; Ptrend = 0.13), aggressive (ORQ4 vs. Q1 = 1.14; 95% CI, 0.80-1.63; Ptrend = 0.51), or nonaggressive (ORQ4 vs. Q1 = 1.22; 95% CI, 0.91-1.63; Ptrend = 0.07) prostate cancer risks. Different definitions of aggressive disease did not meaningfully alter these results. Despite in vitro studies linking AMH to prostate cancer, this first analysis of prediagnostic, circulating AMH concentrations in men provides no evidence for an association with prostate cancer risk.

Abstract
Background Anti-Müllerian hormone is marker of ovarian and testicular reserve. The clinical use of this hormone requires proper standardization of reference intervals. The aims of this study were to validate the Anti-Müllerian hormone Gen II immunoassay, to establish Anti-Müllerian hormone reference intervals in healthy subjects, and to evaluate the influence of hormonal contraceptives, smoking, and body mass index on Anti-Müllerian hormone. Methods The validation of the Anti-Müllerian hormone Gen II assay (Beckman Coulter Company, TX, USA) was performed using a simplified protocol recommended by Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute. One-hundred and thirty-three healthy females and 120 males were prospectively selected for this study. Results The analytical and functional sensitivities of the Anti-Müllerian hormone Gen II immunoassay were 0.02 and 0.2 ng/mL, respectively. Intra-assay coefficients ranged from 5.2 to 9.0%, whereas inter-assay precision ranged from 4.6 to 7.8% at different concentrations. In females, Anti-Müllerian hormone showed progressive decline with increasing age (r = −0.4, p < 0.001), whereas in males, age showed no influence on Anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations. In females, Anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations did not differ between users and non-users of hormonal contraceptives, smokers, and non-smokers and obese and lean individuals. However, there was a negative and significant correlation between Anti-Müllerian hormone and body mass index in males (r = −0.3, p = 0.008). Conclusions Anti-Müllerian hormone Gen II assay was reliable for determining serum Anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations. Anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations declined with aging and presented a wide inter-individual variability. The lack of influence of hormonal contraceptives, smoking, and obesity on Anti-Müllerian hormone in both sexes allowed us to refine the normative concentrations for the Brazilian population.

Abstract
The existence of the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) has been postulated by Professor Alfred Jost to explain the regression of the Müllerian ducts during male sexual differentiation. Since then, AMH has been purified, its gene and specific receptor, AMHR-II have been cloned. Further, the signaling pathways were identified and it has been observed that AMH was produced by the granulosa cells of growing follicles. From the 2000s, unexpected roles of AMH have been highlighted, reactivating international research on this hormone. It is now well established that AMH plays a key role in the follicular recruitment and development. Over the past years, serum AMH measurements have been proposed as a marker of the follicular ovarian status, and a predictor of assisted reproductive cycles. AMH is also useful to assess the effectiveness of treatment of some gynecological tumors. This article is a review of the past five years advances on the regulation of the expression of AMH and its specific receptor AMHR-II in female.

Abstract
Smoking is still the leading cause of premature morbidity and mortality. This paper examines new research on gender differences and the epidemiology of smoking, smoking-related morbidity and mortality, and factors that affect smoking cessation. The rate of decline in the prevalence of smoking has been slowing, especially among adolescent girls. New research suggests that, compared with men, women may be more susceptible to smoking-related morbidity and mortality. Gender-related barriers to smoking cessation include weight gain, sex hormones, and mood. Furthermore, the sensory aspects of smoking may have more of an effect on smoking treatment for women than for men. We discuss new studies that examine smoking-cessation interventions that may be particularly beneficial for women, including exercise (as an adjunct intervention), very low nicotine content cigarettes, and a variety of pharmacotherapy. Further research is needed to identify and target the gender-specific needs of smokers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether reproductive age, as indexed by a validated marker of ovarian reserve (antimüllerian hormone [AMH]), varies among women of different race/ethnic backgrounds. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Community-based sample. PATIENT(S) Multiethnic sample of 947 (277 white, 237 African American, 220 Latina, and 213 Chinese) healthy and regularly cycling premenopausal women, ages 25-45. INTERVENTION(S) None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) AMH level. RESULT(S) A multivariate model was fit examining race/ethnicity, covariates, nonlinear terms for age (age(2), age(3)), and body mass index (BMI(2), BMI(3)), and two-way interactions between race/ethnicity and each of the other predictor variables in relation to AMH. After backward elimination, significant effects included race/ethnicity (F = 8.45), age (F = 349.94), race/ethnicity-by-linear age interaction (F = 4.67), age(2) (F = 31.61), and BMI (F = 10.69). Inspection of the significant race/ethnicity-by-linear age interaction showed AMH levels were consistently lower among Latina women compared with white women across all ages, whereas AMH levels were lower among African American and Chinese women compared with the white women at younger and middle ages, respectively. The AMH levels were higher among African American compared with Latina and Chinese women at older ages. CONCLUSION(S) Although the results must be considered preliminary, the findings are twofold: African American women may have lower AMH levels at younger ages but experience less of a reduction in AMH with advancing age, and Latina and Chinese women compared with white women may have lower AMH levels, marking a lower ovarian reserve and a possibly increased risk for earlier menopause.

P27 and SKP2, a major regulator of P27, play a crucial role in ovarian function in mice. Both P27-deficient and SKP2-deficient female mice develop premature ovarian failure (POF). The coding regions of SKP2 and P27 were examined in 200 Chinese women with POF and 200 control volunteers. This study is the first to investigate SKP2 in POF. No plausible pathogenic mutations were detected. The results suggest that mutations in SKP2 and P27 are not common in Chinese Han women with POF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Menopause is the consequence of exhaustion of the ovarian follicular pool. AMH, an indirect hormonal marker of ovarian reserve, has been recently proposed as a predictor for age at menopause. Since BMI and smoking status are relevant independent factors associated with age at menopause we evaluated whether a model including all three of these variables could improve AMH-based prediction of age at menopause. METHODS In the present cohort study, participants were 375 eumenorrheic women aged 19-44 years and a sample of 2,635 Italian menopausal women. AMH values were obtained from the eumenorrheic women. RESULTS Regression analysis of the AMH data showed that a quadratic function of age provided a good description of these data plotted on a logarithmic scale, with a distribution of residual deviates that was not normal but showed significant left-skewness. Under the hypothesis that menopause can be predicted by AMH dropping below a critical threshold, a model predicting menopausal age was constructed from the AMH regression model and applied to the data on menopause. With the AMH threshold dependent on the covariates BMI and smoking status, the effects of these covariates were shown to be highly significant. CONCLUSIONS In the present study we confirmed the good level of conformity between the distributions of observed and AMH-predicted ages at menopause, and showed that using BMI and smoking status as additional variables improves AMH-based prediction of age at menopause.

Abstract
Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is an ovarian hormone expressed in growing follicles that have undergone recruitment from the primordial follicle pool but have not yet been selected for dominance. It is considered an accurate marker of ovarian reserve, able to reflect the size of the ovarian follicular pool of a woman of reproductive age. In comparison to other hormonal biomarkers such as serum FSH, low intra- and intermenstrual cycle variability have been proposed for AMH. This review summarizes the knowledge regarding within-subject variability, with particular attention on AMH intracycle variability. Moreover the impact of ethnicity, body mass index, and smoking behaviour on AMH interindividual variability will be reviewed. Finally changes in AMH serum levels in two conditions of ovarian quiescence, namely contraceptives use and pregnancy, will be discussed. The present review aims at guiding researchers and clinicians in interpreting AMH values and fluctuations in various research and clinical scenarios.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate if there were alterations in FSH plasma levels in female outdoor workers (traffic policewomen and drivers) exposed to chemical urban stressors vs. control group. After excluding subjects with main confounding factors, traffic policewomen, drivers and indoor workers were matched by age, working life, socioeconomic status, marital status, menstrual cycle day, age of menarche, habitual consumption of Italian coffee and soy. A total of 129 female subjects were included in the study: some 63 workers studied during proliferative phase and 66 during secretory phase of menstrual cycle. Proliferative phase of menstrual cycle: FSH mean values were significantly higher in traffic policewomen compared to controls (p < 0.05). Results suggest that in outdoor workers exposed to urban chemical stressors there are alterations in FSH levels; therefore FSH may be used as an early biological marker, valuable for the group, used in occupational set.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the remodeling of large arteries according to age at menopause, duration of menopause, and use of hormone therapy (HT). DESIGN A cross-sectional study consisting of baseline measurements of a multicentric randomized trial were used to evaluate arterial parameters. SETTING The study was conducted in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands in academic hospitals and private clinics. PATIENT(S) Postmenopausal women (n = 538) with mild hypercholesterolemia. INTERVENTION(S) None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT), central pulse pressure, and aortic stiffness (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity) were measured and centrally controlled for quality. Multivariate regression analysis was used to assess the possible covariates associated with arterial parameters. RESULT(S) Women were 58 ± 6 (mean ± SD) years of age with an age of 50 ± 5 at menopause and a mean duration of menopause of 8 ± 7 years. Lower age at menopause, time since menopause, and absence of HT use were independently associated with worsening of the arterial parameters. After multivariate analysis, HT was associated with a lower CCA-IMT (-40 μm [range -64 to -1]), whereas lower age at menopause and menopause duration were respectively associated with a CCA-IMT increase (25 μm/5 y and 27 μm/5 y). Similarly, values of central pulse pressure and pulse wave velocity were lower in HT users (-3.1 mm Hg [-5.1 to -0.9] and -0.31 m/s [-0.63 to -0.02], respectively) but worsened with age at menopause and menopause duration. CONCLUSION(S) The age at menopause, the time since menopause, and the use of HT are independently associated with the thickening and stiffening of the large arteries. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) on follicular development and function from the early preantral stage through ovulation. DESIGN Prospective laboratory study. SETTING Academic research environment. ANIMAL(S) Female F1 hybrid (C57BL/6j×CBA/Ca) mice. INTERVENTION(S) Mouse early preantral follicles (100-130 μm) were exposed to increasing concentrations of CSC (0 μg/mL [control] to 130 μg/mL) during in vitro growth and ovulation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Follicular development, follicle survival, gonadal steroid output, expansion of the cumulus-oocyte complex, oocyte growth, and maturation. RESULT(S) Cigarette smoke condensate exposure significantly inhibited follicular development in the preantral and antral stage and decreased follicle survival at 90 μg CSC/mL and higher. Estradiol output was significantly lower in CSC-exposed (90 and 130 μg/mL) follicles. Before ovulation, CSC significantly increased P output, which decreased thereafter. Cigarette smoke condensate exposure reduced cumulus-oocyte complex expansion and subsequently reduced the number of polar body oocytes. CONCLUSION(S) Cigarette smoke condensate exposure inhibits follicle development and leads to premature luteinization of the preovulatory follicle, with decreased oocyte maturation in a mouse isolated follicle culture system that mimics murine folliculogenesis in vivo.
