Engineering two-dimensional metal oxides and chalcogenides for enhanced electro- and photocatalysis

Piezoelectric catalytic driven advanced oxidation process using two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides for wastewater pollutants remediation

The public and society have increasingly recognized numerous grave environmental issues, including water pollution, attributed to the rapid expansion of industrialization and agriculture. Renewable energy-driven catalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) represent a green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly approach to meet the demands of environmental remediation. In this context, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) piezoelectric materials, with their non-centrosymmetric crystal structure, exhibit unique features. They create dipole polarization, inducing a built-in electric field that generates polarized holes and electrons and triggers redox reactions, thereby facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species for wastewater pollutant remediation. A broad spectrum of 2D TMDCs piezoelectric materials have been explored in self-integrated Fenton-like processes and persulfate activation processes. These materials offer a more simplistic and practical method than traditional approaches. Consequently, this review highlights recent advancements in 2D TMDCs piezoelectric catalysts and their roles in wastewater pollutant remediation through piezocatalytic-driven AOPs, such as Fenton-like processes and sulfate radicals-based oxidation processes.

Nanocatalysts for modulating antitumor immunity: fabrication, mechanisms and applications

Immunotherapy harnesses the inherent immune system in the body to generate systemic antitumor immunity, offering a promising modality for defending against cancer. However, tumor immunosuppression and evasion seriously restrict the immune response rates in clinical settings. Catalytic nanomedicines can transform tumoral substances/metabolites into therapeutic products in situ, offering unique advantages in antitumor immunotherapy. Through catalytic reactions, both tumor eradication and immune regulation can be simultaneously achieved, favoring the development of systemic antitumor immunity. In recent years, with advancements in catalytic chemistry and nanotechnology, catalytic nanomedicines based on nanozymes, photocatalysts, sonocatalysts, Fenton catalysts, electrocatalysts, piezocatalysts, thermocatalysts and radiocatalysts have been rapidly developed with vast applications in cancer immunotherapy. This review provides an introduction to the fabrication of catalytic nanomedicines with an emphasis on their structures and engineering strategies. Furthermore, the catalytic substrates and state-of-the-art applications of nanocatalysts in cancer immunotherapy have also been outlined and discussed. The relationships between nanostructures and immune regulating performance of catalytic nanomedicines are highlighted to provide a deep understanding of their working mechanisms in the tumor microenvironment. Finally, the challenges and development trends are revealed, aiming to provide new insights for the future development of nanocatalysts in catalytic immunotherapy.

Piezoelectric Applications of Low-Dimensional Composites and Porous Materials

Low-dimensional (LD) materials, with atomically thin anisotropic structures, exhibit remarkable physical and chemical properties, prominently featuring piezoelectricity resulting from the absence of centrosymmetry. This characteristic has led to diverse applications, including sensors, actuators, and micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems. While piezoelectric effects are observed across zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), and two-dimensional (2D) LD materials, challenges such as effective charge separation and crystal structure imperfections limit their full potential. Addressing these issues requires innovative solutions, with the integration of LD materials with polymers, ceramics, metals, and other porous materials proving a key strategy to significantly enhance piezoelectric properties. This review comprehensively covers recent advances in synthesizing and characterizing piezoelectric composites based on LD materials and porous materials. The synergistic combination of LD materials with other substances, especially porous materials, demonstrates notable performance improvements, addressing inherent challenges. The review also explores future directions and challenges in developing these composite materials, highlighting potential applications across various technological domains.

Boosting Plant Photosynthesis with Carbon Dots: A Critical Review of Performance and Prospects

Artificially augmented photosynthesis in nano-bionic plants requires tunable nano-antenna structures with physiochemical and optoelectronic properties, as well as unique light conversion capabilities. The use of nanomaterials to promote light capture across photosystems, primarily by carbon dots, has shown promising results in enhancing photosynthesis through tunable uptake, translocation, and biocompatibility. Carbon dots possess the ability to perform both down and up-light conversions, making them effective light promoters for harnessing solar energy beyond visible light wavelengths.This review presents and discusses the recent progress in fabrication, chemistry, and morphology, as well as other properties such as photoluminescence and energy conversion efficiency of nano-antennas based on carbon dots. The performance of artificially boosted photosynthesis is discussed and then correlated with the conversion properties of carbon dots and how they are applied to plant models. The challenges related to the nanomaterial delivery and the performance evaluation practices in modified photosystems, consideration of the reliability of this approach, and the potential avenues for performance improvements through other types of nano-antennas based on alternative nanomaterials are also critically evaluated. It is anticipated that this review will stimulate more high-quality research in plant nano-bionics and provide avenues to enhance photosynthesis for future agricultural applications.

Crystallization Engineering of CuNi2 S4 Ultra-Fine Nanocrystals with Optimized Band Structures for Efficient Photocatalytic Pollutant Degradation and Hydrogen Production

The mono-dispersed cubic siegenite CuNi2 S4 ultra-fine (≈5 nm) nanocrystals are fabricated through crystallization engineering under hot injection. The strong hydroxylation on mostly exposed CuNi2 S4 (220) surface leads to the formation of multi-valence (Cu+ , Cu2+ , Ni2+ , Ni3+ ) species with unsaturated hybridization and coordination micro-environments, which can induce rich redox reactions to optimize interfacial kinetics for the adsorbed reaction intermediates. The as-synthesized CuNi2 S4 nanocrystals with ultra-small particle size and the characteristics of being highly dispersed can increase specific surface area and hydroxylated active sites, which considerably contribute to the improvement of photocatalytic activities. Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that the CuNi2 S4 with unique surface condition can properly modulate the charge density distribution and the electronic band structure, thus achieving an optimal band gap for enhancing visible light absorption. Additionally, the strong hydroxylation on CuNi2 S4 (220) surface can not only make the photocatalytic process stable in alkaline environment but also bring about an impurity level between conduction and valence band, which facilitates the separation of photo-induced charge carriers by suppressing the rapid re-combination of exited electrons and holes. The optimization of band structure should be the intrinsic reason for the efficient photocatalytic pollutant degradation and hydrogen production under visible light illumination.

Phase Engineering and Synchrotron-Based Study on Two-Dimensional Energy Nanomaterials

In recent years, there has been significant interest in the development of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties for various energy applications. These properties are often derived from the phase structures established through a range of physical and chemical design strategies. A concrete analysis of the phase structures and real reaction mechanisms of 2D energy nanomaterials requires advanced characterization methods that offer valuable information as much as possible. Here, we present a comprehensive review on the phase engineering of typical 2D nanomaterials with the focus of synchrotron radiation characterizations. In particular, the intrinsic defects, atomic doping, intercalation, and heterogeneous interfaces on 2D nanomaterials are introduced, together with their applications in energy-related fields. Among them, synchrotron-based multiple spectroscopic techniques are emphasized to reveal their intrinsic phases and structures. More importantly, various in situ methods are employed to provide deep insights into their structural evolutions under working conditions or reaction processes of 2D energy nanomaterials. Finally, conclusions and research perspectives on the future outlook for the further development of 2D energy nanomaterials and synchrotron radiation light sources and integrated techniques are discussed.

Building intercalation structure for high ionic conductivity via aliovalent substitution

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, which possess robust nanochannels, high flux and allow scalable fabrication, provide new platforms for nanofluids. Highly efficient ionic conductivity can facilitate the application of nanofluidic devices for modern energy conversion and ionic sieving. Herein, we propose a novel strategy of building an intercalation crystal structure with negative surface charge and mobile interlamellar ions via aliovalent substitution to boost ionic conductivity. The Li2xM1-xPS3 (M = Cd, Ni, Fe) crystals obtained by the solid-state reaction exhibit distinct capability of water absorption and apparant variation of interlayer spacing (from 0.67 to 1.20 nm). The assembled membranes show the ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 1.20 S/cm for Li0.5Cd0.75PS3 and 1.01 S/cm for Li0.6Ni0.7PS3. This facile strategy may inspire the research in other 2D materials with higher ionic transport performance for nanofluids.

One-Step Synthesis of Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Quantum Dots Using Only Alcohol Solvents for Indoor-Light Photocatalytic Antibacterial Activity

In this study, we report a one-step direct synthesis of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) and tungsten disulfide (WS₂) quantum dots (QDs) through a solvothermal reaction using only alcohol solvents and efficient Escherichia coli (E. coli) decompositions as photocatalytic antibacterial agents under visible light irradiation. The solvothermal reaction gives the scission of molybdenum-sulfur (Mo-S) and tungsten-sulfur (W-S) bonding during the synthesis of MoS₂ and WS₂ QDs. Using only alcohol solvent does not require a residue purification process necessary for metal intercalation. As the number of the CH₃ groups of alcohol solvents among ethyl, isopropyl, and tert(t)-butyl alcohols increases, the dispersibility of MoS₂/WS₂ increases. The CH₃ groups of alcohols minimize the surface energy, leading to the effective exfoliation and disintegration of the bulk under heat and pressure. The bulky t-butyl alcohol with the highest number of methyl groups shows the highest exfoliation and yield. MoS₂ QDs with a lateral size of about 2.5 nm and WS₂ QDs of about 10 nm are prepared, exhibiting a strong blue luminescence under 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Their heights are 0.68-3 and 0.72-5 nm, corresponding to a few layers of MoS₂ and WS₂, respectively. They offer a highly efficient performance in sterilizing E. coli as the visible-light-driven photocatalyst.

Preparation of Iron-Based Sulfides and Their Applications in Biomedical Fields

Recently, iron-based sulfides, including iron sulfide minerals and biological iron sulfide clusters, have attracted widespread interest, owing to their excellent biocompatibility and multi-functionality in biomedical applications. As such, controlled synthesized iron sulfide nanomaterials with elaborate designs, enhanced functionality and unique electronic structures show numerous advantages. Furthermore, iron sulfide clusters produced through biological metabolism are thought to possess magnetic properties and play a crucial role in balancing the concentration of iron in cells, thereby affecting ferroptosis processes. The electrons in the Fenton reaction constantly transfer between Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺, participating in the production and reaction process of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This mechanism is considered to confer advantages in various biomedical fields such as the antibacterial field, tumor treatment, biosensing and the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, we aim to systematically introduce recent advances in common iron-based sulfides.

Au Nanowires Decorated Ultrathin Co3 O4 Nanosheets toward Light-Enhanced Nitrate Electroreduction

Nitrate is a reasonable alternative instead of nitrogen for ammonia production due to the low bond energy, large water-solubility, and high chemical polarity for good absorption. Nitrate electroreduction reaction (NO₃ RR) is an effective and green strategy for both nitrate treatment and ammonia production. As an electrochemical reaction, the NO₃ RR requires an efficient electrocatalyst for achieving high activity and selectivity. Inspired by the enhancement effect of heterostructure on electrocatalysis, Au nanowires decorated ultrathin Co₃ O₄ nanosheets (Co₃ O₄ -NS/Au-NWs) nanohybrids are proposed for improving the efficiency of nitrate-to-ammonia electroreduction. Theoretical calculation reveals that Au heteroatoms can effectively adjust the electron structure of Co active centers and reduce the energy barrier of the determining step (*NO → *NOH) during NO₃ RR. As the result, the Co₃ O₄ -NS/Au-NWs nanohybrids achieve an outstanding catalytic performance with high yield rate (2.661 mg h^-1 mg_cat ^-1 ) toward nitrate-to-ammonia. Importantly, the Co₃ O₄ -NS/Au-NWs nanohybrids show an obviously plasmon-promoted activity for NO₃ RR due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property of Au-NWs, which can achieve an enhanced NH₃ yield rate of 4.045 mg h^-1 mg_cat ^-1 . This study reveals the structure-activity relationship of heterostructure and LSPR-promotion effect toward NO₃ RR, which provide an efficient nitrate-to-ammonia reduction with high efficiency.

Progress and perspectives on 1D nanostructured catalysts applied in photo(electro)catalytic reduction of CO2

Reducing CO₂ into value-added chemicals and fuels by artificial photosynthesis (photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis) is one of the considerable solutions to global environmental and energy issues. One-dimensional (1D) nanostructured catalysts (nanowires, nanorods, nanotubes and so on.) have attracted extensive attention due to their superior light-harvesting ability, co-catalyst loading capacity, and high carrier separation rate. This review analyzed the basic principle of the photo(electro)catalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) briefly. The preparation methods and properties of 1D nanostructured catalysts are introduced. Next, the applications of 1D nanostructured catalysts in the field of photo(electro)catalytic CO₂ RR are introduced in detail. In particular, we introduced the design of composite catalysts with 1D nanostructures, for example loading 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D materials on a 1D nanostructured semiconductor to construct a heterojunction to optimize the photo-response range, carrier separation and transport efficiency, CO₂ adsorption and activation capacity, and stability of the catalyst. Finally, the development prospects of 1D nanostructured catalysts are discussed and summarized. This review can provide guidance for the rational design of advanced catalysts for photo(electro)catalytic CO₂ RR.

Integrated CO2 Capture and Hydrogenation to Produce Formate in Aqueous Amine Solutions Using Pd-Based Catalyst

Integrated CO2 capture and hydrogenation to produce formate offers a sustainable approach for reducing carbon dioxide emissions and producing liquid hydrogen carriers (formate) simultaneously. In the current study, three different types of aqueous amine solutions including monoethanolamine (MEA), diethanolamine (DEA) and triethanolamine (TEA) were investigated as CO2-capturing and hydrogenation agents in the presence of a Pd/NAC catalyst. The effect of amine structures on the CO2 absorption products and formate yield was investigated thoroughly. It was found that the formate product was successfully produced in the presence of all three aqueous amine solutions, with tertiary amine TEA accounting for the highest formate yield under the same CO2 loadings. This is due to the fact that primary and secondary amine moieties in MEA and DEA are responsible for the formation of CO2 adducts of carbamate and bicarbonate, whereas the tertiary amine moiety in TEA is responsible for the formation of hydrogenation-favorable bicarbonate as the solo CO2 absorption product. A high yield of formate of 82.6% was achieved when hydrogenating 3 M TEA with 0.3 mol CO2/mol amine solution in the presence of a Pd/NAC catalyst. In addition, the physio-chemical properties of the Pd/NAC catalyst analyzed using TEM, XRD and XPS characterization were applied to rationalize the superior catalytic performance of the catalyst. The reaction mechanism of integrated CO2 capture and hydrogenation to produce formate in aqueous amine solutions over Pd/NAC catalyst was proposed as well.

Advances in Two-Dimensional Materials for Optoelectronics Applications

The past one and a half decades have witnessed the tremendous progress of two-dimensional (2D) crystals, including graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, MXenes, hexagonal boron nitride, etc., in a variety of fields. The key to their success is their unique structural, electrical, mechanical and optical properties. Herein, this paper gives a comprehensive summary on the recent advances in 2D materials for optoelectronic approaches with the emphasis on the morphology and structure, optical properties, synthesis methods, as well as detailed optoelectronic applications. Additionally, the challenges and perspectives in the current development of 2D materials are also summarized and indicated. Therefore, this review can provide a reference for further explorations and innovations of 2D material-based optoelectronics devices.

Progress on two-dimensional binary oxide materials

Two-dimensional van der Waals (2D vdW) materials have attracted much attention because of their unique electronic and optical properties. Since the successful isolation of graphene in 2004, many interesting 2D materials have emerged, including elemental olefins (silicene, germanene, etc.), transition metal chalcogenides, transition metal carbides (nitrides), hexagonal boron, etc. On the other hand, 2D binary oxide materials are an important group in the 2D family owing to their high structural diversity, low cost, high stability, and strong adjustability. This review systematically summarizes the research progress on 2D binary oxide materials. We discuss their composition and structure in terms of vdW and non-vdW categories in detail, followed by a discussion of their synthesis methods. In particular, we focus on strategies to tailor the properties of 2D oxides and their emerging applications in different fields. Finally, the challenges and future developments of 2D binary oxides are provided.

Two-dimensional ultrathin metal-based nanosheets for photocatalytic CO2 conversion to solar fuels

Artificially simulated photosynthesis has created substantial curiosity as the majority of efforts in this arena have been aimed to upsurge solar fuel efficiencies for commercialization. The layered inorganic 2D nanosheets offer considerably higher tunability of their chemical surface, physicochemical properties and catalytic activity. Despites the intrinsic advantages of such metal-based materials viz., metal oxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, metal oxyhalides, metal organic frameworks, layered double hydroxide, MXene's, boron nitride, black phosphorous and perovskites, studies on such systems are limited for applications in photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. The role of metal-based layers for CO₂ conversion and new strategies such as surface modifications, defect generation and heterojunctions to optimize their functionalities are discussed in this review. Research prospects and technical challenges for future developments of layered 2D metal-based nanomaterials are critically discussed.

Recent advances in the tuning of the organic framework materials - The selections of ligands, reaction conditions, and post-synthesis approaches

Organic framework materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), graphene-organic frameworks (GOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have led to the revolution across fields including catalysts, sensors, gas capture, and biology mainly owing to their ultra-high surface area-to-volume ratio, on-demand tunable crystal structures, and unique surface properties. While the wet chemistry routes have been the predominant synthesis approach, the crystal phase, morphological parameters, and physicochemical properties of organic framework materials are largely affected by various synthesis parameters and precursors. In this work, we specifically review the influences of synthesis parameters towards crystal structures and chemical compositions of organic framework materials, including selected ligand types and lengths, reaction temperature/solvent/reactant compositions, as well as post-synthesis modification approaches. More importantly, the subsequent impacts on the general electronic, mechanical, surface chemical, and thermal properties as well as the consequent variation in performances towards catalytic, desalination, gas sensing, and gas storage applications are critically discussed. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of organic framework materials are provided.

Two-Dimensional Nanomaterial-based catalytic Medicine: Theories, advanced catalyst and system design

Two-dimensional nanomaterial-based catalytic medicines that associate the superiorities of novel catalytic mechanisms with nanotechnology have emerged as absorbing therapeutic strategies for cancer therapy. Catalytic medicines featuring high efficiency and selectivity have been widely used as effective anticancer strategies without applying traditional nonselective and highly toxic chemodrugs. Moreover, two-dimensional nanomaterials are characterized by distinctive physicochemical properties, such as a sizeable bandgap, good conductivity, fast electron transfer and photoelectrochemical activity. The introduction of two-dimensional nanomaterials into catalytic medicine provides a more effective, controllable, and precise antitumor strategy. In this review, different types of two-dimensional nanomaterial-based catalytic nanomedicines are generalized, and their catalytic theories, advanced catalytic pathways and catalytic nanosystem design are also discussed in detail. Notably, future challenges and obstacles in the design and further clinical transformation of two-dimensional nanomaterial-based catalytic nanomedicine are prospected.

Recent advances in the fabrication of 2D metal oxides

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) metal oxides exhibit unique optical, electrical, magnetic, and chemical properties, rendering them a bright application prospect in high-performance smart devices. Given the large variety of both layered and non-layered 2D metal oxides, the controllable synthesis is the critical prerequisite for enabling the exploration of their great potentials. In this review, recent progress in the synthesis of 2D metal oxides is summarized and categorized. Particularly, a brief overview of categories and crystal structures of 2D metal oxides is firstly introduced, followed by a critical discussion of various synthesis methods regarding the growth mechanisms, advantages, and limitations. Finally, the existing challenges are presented to provide possible future research directions regarding the synthesis of 2D metal oxides. This work can provide useful guidance on developing innovative approaches for producing both 2D layered and non-layered nanostructures and assist with the acceleration of the research of 2D metal oxides.

N-doping TiO2 hollow microspheres with abundant oxygen vacancies for highly photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Photocatalytic fixation of nitrogen to ammonia (NH₃) is a green but low-efficiency technology due to the high recombination of photo-generated carriers and poor light absorption of photocatalysts. Generally, the adsorption capacity for N₂ and the band position of TiO₂ are responsible for bandgap, light-adsorption, and the separation of photocarriers. Therefore, they play crucial roles to improve catalytic activity. Herein, N-doping TiO₂ hollow microspheres (NTO-0.5) with oxygen vacancies were synthesized via a hydrothermal method using phenolic resin microsphere as a template. The obtained NTO-0.5 achieves an impressive ammonia yield of 80.09 μmol g_cat^-1h^-1. Oxygen vacancies of NTO-0.5 were confirmed by ESR, Raman, XPS, Zeta potential, and H₂O₂ treatment for reducing oxygen vacancies. The ammonia yield of NTO-0.5 decreases to 34.78 μmol g_cat^-1h^-1 after reducing oxygen vacancies by H₂O₂ treatment, which demonstrates the importance of oxygen vacancies. The oxygen vacancies narrow the bandgap from 3.18 eV to 2.83 eV and impede the recombination of photo-generated carriers. The hollow microspheres structure is conducive to light absorption and utilization. Therefore, the synergistic effect between the oxygen vacancies and the hollow microspheres structure boosts the efficiency of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. After four cycles, the ammonia production yield still maintains at 76.52 μmol g_cat^-1h^-1, meaning high stability. This work provides a new insight into the construction of catalysts with oxygen vacancies to enhance photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance.

Photocatalytic Z-Scheme Overall Water Splitting: Recent Advances in Theory and Experiments

Photocatalytic water splitting is considered one of the most important and appealing approaches for the production of green H₂ to address the global energy demand. The utmost possible form of artificial photosynthesis is a two-step photoexcitation known as "Z-scheme", which mimics the natural photosystem. This process solely relies on the effective coupling and suitable band positions of semiconductors (SCs) and redox mediators for the purpose to catalyze the surface chemical reactions and significantly deter the backward reaction. In recent years, the Z-scheme strategies and their key role have been studied progressively through experimental approaches. In addition, theoretical studies based on density functional theory have provided detailed insight into the mechanistic aspects of some breathtakingly complex problems associated with hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. In this context, this critical review gives an overview of the fundamentals of Z-scheme photocatalysis, including both theoretical and experimental advancements in the field of photocatalytic water splitting, and suggests future perspectives.

Crystal-Structure-Dependent Photocatalytic Redox Activity and Reaction Pathways over Ga2O3 Polymorphs

Differentiated crystal structures generally affect the surface physicochemical properties of catalysts, causing variety in catalytic activity between polymorphs. However, the underlying mechanism has not been completely revealed, especially the influence of surface physicochemical properties on photocatalytic redox activity and the reaction mechanism. In this work, we reveal the mechanism of surface redox properties on different crystal forms of gallium oxide from a molecular level. α-Ga₂O₃ and β-Ga₂O₃ exhibit a slight difference in catalytic oxidation of organic pollutants due to comprehensive influencing factors, including their valence band position, reactive oxygen species, and pore structure properties related to the adsorption-reaction-desorption process. But the catalytic reduction ability of CO₂ is obviously different due to the large differences of interaction between the surface of crystal structures and CO₂ molecules, which are critical to determine the catalytic performance and reaction pathways. The enhanced adsorption and activation of CO₂ on the α-Ga₂O₃ surface could promote the reduction reaction efficiency. Moreover, the large energy barrier of CH₂* formation on β-Ga₂O₃ makes the formation of methane (CH₄) relatively difficult compared to that on α-Ga₂O₃. The yield rate of CH₄ (1.8 μmol·g^-1·h^-1) on α-Ga₂O₃ is three times better than that on β-Ga₂O₃ (CH₄: 0.6 μmol·g^-1·h^-1). The current findings can offer novel insights into the understanding of crystal-structure-dependent photocatalytic performances and the design of new catalysts applied in energy conversion and environmental purification by crystal structure-tuning.

Strain-Induced Ferroelectric Heterostructure Catalysts of Hydrogen Production through Piezophototronic and Piezoelectrocatalytic System

In this work, we discover a piezoelectrocatalytic system composed of a ferroelectric heterostructure of BaTiO₃ (BTO)@MoSe₂ nanosheets, which exhibit piezoelectric potential (piezopotential) coupling with electrocatalyzed effects by a strain-induced piezopotential to provide an internal bias to the catalysts' surface; subsequently, the catalytic properties are substantially altered to enable the formation of activity states. The H₂ production rate of BTO@MoSe₂ for the piezoelectrocatalytic H₂ generation is 4533 μmol h^-1 g^-1, which is 206% that of TiO₂@MoSe₂ for piezophototronic (referred to as piezophotocatalytic process) H₂ generation (∼2195.6 μmol h^-1 g^-1). BTO@MoSe₂ presents a long-term H₂ production rate of 21.2 mmol g^-1 within 8 h, which is the highest recorded value under piezocatalytic conditions. The theoretical and experimental results indicate that the ferroelectric BTO acts as a strain-induced electric field generator while the few-layered MoSe₂ is facilitating piezocatalytic redox reactions on its active sites. This is a promising method for environmental remediation and clean energy development.

High-Voltage, High-Current Electrical Switching Discharge Synthesis of ZnO Nanorods: A New Method toward Rapid and Highly Tunable Synthesis of Oxide Semiconductors in Open Air and Water for Optoelectronic Applications

A novel method of oxide semiconductor nanoparticle synthesis is proposed based on high-voltage, high-current electrical switching discharge (HVHC-ESD). Through a subsecond discharge in the HVHC-ESD method, we successfully synthesized zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods. Crystallography and optical and electrical analyses approve the high crystal-quality and outstanding optoelectronic characteristics of our synthesized ZnO. The HVHC-ESD method enables the synthesis of ZnO nanorods with ultraviolet (UV) and visible emissions. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our prepared materials, we also fabricated two UV photodetectors based on the ZnO nanorods synthesized using the subsecond HVHC-ESD method. The UV-photodetector test under dark and UV light irradiation also had a promising result with a linear ohmic current-voltage output. In addition to the HVHC-ESD method's excellent tunability for ZnO properties, this method enables the rapid synthesis of ZnO nanorods in open air and water. The results demonstrate the preparation, highlight the synthesis of fine hexagonal-shaped nanorods under a second with controlled oxygen vacancies, and point defects for a wide range of applications in less than a second.
