Review of the sources and behaviors of plutonium isotopes in the atmosphere and ocean

Plutonium, as well as fission products such as 137Cs, had been released into the earth environment in 1945 after the first atmospheric nuclear explosion of plutonium bomb in the desert of New Mexico (USA, July 16) and later over Nagasaki (August 9), followed then by many other explosions. Thus, plutonium cycling in the atmosphere and ocean has become a major public concern as a result of the radiological and chemical toxicity of plutonium. However, plutonium isotopes and 137Cs are important transient tracers of biogeochemical and physical processes in the environment, respectively. In this review, we show that both physical and chemical approaches are needed to comprehensively understand the behaviors of plutonium in the atmosphere and ocean. In the atmosphere, plutonium and 137Cs attach with aerosols; thus, plutonium moves according to physical and chemical processes in connection with aerosols; however, since plutonium is a chemically reactive element, its behavior in an aqueous environment is more complicated, because biogeochemical regulatory factors, in addition to geophysical regulatory factors, must be considered. Meanwhile, 137Cs is chemically inert in aqueous environments. Therefore, the biogeochemical characteristics of plutonium can be elucidated through a comparison with those of 137Cs, which show conservative properties and moves according to physical processes. Finally, we suggest that monitoring of both plutonium and 137Cs can help elucidate geophysical and biogeochemical changes from climate changes.

Level, distribution and sources of plutonium in the northeast and north China

Concentrations of ²³⁹Pu and ²⁴⁰Pu in 163 surface soil samples and five soil cores collected from the northeast and north China were analyzed using the radiochemical separation combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurement. The average ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atomic ratios (0.185 ± 0.018) for all surface soil samples indicated that the global fallout is the major source of plutonium in the studied region. The ^239,240Pu concentrations of the surface soil ranged from 0.002 mBq/g to 4.82 mBq/g, lying in the range of the reported results in the areas with similar latitude, except for a few samples. The distribution of ^239,240Pu in this region is controlled by the deposition of plutonium in the atmosphere and its preservation in the soil, which were affects by multi-factors such as topography, climate, utilization of the land and vegetation coverage. The analytical results could be used as the baseline data for the assessment of the impact of nuclear activities in the past and the future.

Distribution of Pu isotopes and 210Pb in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea: Implications for provenance and transportation

Particle-reactive radionuclides are useful for tracing sediment dynamics in marginal seas. We collected a suite of surface sediment samples in May 2014 from the Bohai Sea (BS) and Northern Yellow Sea (NYS) to observe the spatial distribution of Plutonium (Pu) isotopes and ²¹⁰Pb activities. ^239+240Pu activities ranged from 0.001 to 0.288 and 0.040-0.269 Bq kg^-1 in BS and NYS surface sediments, respectively. ²¹⁰Pb_ex shows a significant correlation with ^239+240Pu (r = 0.84, p < 0.01) that suggested these two nuclides were scavenged to the same grade. ²⁴⁰Pu/²³⁹Pu atom ratios in BS (0.173-0.256) and NYS (0.196-0.275) were slightly higher than the global fallout value of 0.18 and lower than the Pacific Proving Ground (PPG) value of 0.36, indicating that some fraction of Pu originating from the PPG was capable of being transported to the BS and NYS. Mass balance results showed that 41% of ^239+240Pu (8.9 × 10⁹ Bq yr^-1) and 18% of ²¹⁰Pb (2.4 × 10¹² Bq yr^-1) in the NYS originated in the oceanic input. In the BS, 63% of ²¹⁰Pb originated from atmospheric deposition and 84% of ^239+240Pu originated from riverine input. Using Pu and ²¹⁰Pb as tracers, we estimate that (1.8-2.6) × 10⁸ t yr^-1 and (3.6-3.8) × 10⁸ t yr^-1 of sedimentary particles could be transported from the BS to the NYS and from the NYS to the Southern Yellow Sea, respectively. Furthermore, the ²²⁶Ra/²³⁸U activity ratio distribution suggested that sedimentary particles derived from the Yellow River could be transported to the middle of the BS and coastal areas of the NYS.

Plutonium in the atmosphere: A global perspective

A number of potential source terms have contributed plutonium isotopes to the atmosphere. The atmospheric nuclear weapon tests conducted between 1945 and 1980 and the re-entry of the burned SNAP-9A satellite in 1964, respectively. It is generally believed that current levels of plutonium in the stratosphere are negligible and compared with the levels generally found at surface-level air. In this study, the time trend analysis and long-term behavior of plutonium isotopes (^239+240Pu and ²³⁸Pu) in the atmosphere were assessed using historical data collected by various national and international monitoring networks since 1960s. An analysis of historical data indicates that ^239+240Pu concentration post-1984 is still frequently detectable, whereas ²³⁸Pu is detected infrequently. Furthermore, the seasonal and time-trend variation of plutonium concentration in surface air followed the stratospheric trends until the early 1980s. After the last Chinese test of 1980, the plutonium concentrations in surface air dropped to the current levels, suggesting that the observed concentrations post-1984 have not been under stratospheric control, but rather reflect the environmental processes such as resuspension. Recent plutonium atmospheric air concentrations data show that besides resuspension, other environmental processes such as global dust storms and biomass burning/wildfire also play an important role in redistributing plutonium in the atmosphere.

Plutonium in the WIPP environment: its detection, distribution and behavior

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the only operating deep underground geologic nuclear repository in the United States. It is located in southeastern New Mexico, approximately 655 m (2150 ft) below the surface of the Earth in a bedded Permian evaporite salt formation. This mined geologic repository is designed for the safe disposal of transuranic (TRU) wastes generated from the US defense program. Aerosol and soil samples have been collected near the WIPP site to investigate the sources of plutonium in the WIPP environment since the late 1990s, well before WIPP received its first shipment. Activities of (238)Pu, (239+240)Pu and (241)Am were determined by alpha spectrometry following a series of chemical separations. The concentrations of Al and U were determined in a separate set of samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The annual airborne concentrations of (239+240)Pu during the period from 1998 to 2010 show no systematic interannual variations. However, monthly (239+240)Pu particulate concentrations show a typical seasonal variation with a maximum in spring, the time when strong and gusty winds frequently give rise to blowing dust. Resuspension of soil particles containing weapons fallout is considered to be the predominant source of plutonium in the WIPP area. Further, this work characterizes the source, temporal variation and its distribution with depth in a soil profile to evaluate the importance of transport mechanisms affecting the fate of these radionuclides in the WIPP environment. The mean (137)Cs/(239+240)Pu, (241)Am/(239+240)Pu activity ratio and (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio observed in the WIPP samples are consistent with the source being largely global fallout. There is no evidence of any release from the WIPP contributing to radionuclide concentrations in the environment.

Characterization of Pu concentration and its isotopic composition in a reference fallout material

Because there is no reference material for fallout plutonium isotope monitoring, preparation of such a material is necessary for quality control of fallout radionuclides analysis for atmospheric environmental studies. In this work, we report the characterization of Pu activity and its isotopic composition in a reference fallout material prepared by the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI), Japan. This material was prepared from samples collected at 14 stations throughout Japan in 1963-1979, with reference values of (137)Cs, (90)Sr and (239)(+)(240)Pu activities. We analyzed the activities of (239)(+)(240)Pu and (241)Pu, and the atom ratios of (240)Pu/(239)Pu and (241)Pu/(239)Pu using an isotope dilution sector-field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SF-ICP-MS). The (239)(+)(240)Pu activities in this fallout material using acid leaching and total digestion were 6.56+/-0.20 mBq/g and 6.79+/-0.16 mBq/g, respectively. Atom ratios of (240)Pu/(239)Pu were 0.1915+/-0.0030 and 0.1922+/-0.0044, respectively. Both (240)Pu/(239)Pu and (241)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratios were slightly higher than those of global fallout, which could be attributed to the deposition of fallout radionuclides resulting from the Chinese nuclear weapons tests conducted in the 1970s. The dominant host phases of (239)(+)(240)Pu were found to be organic matter-sulfides (70%) with a relative high (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio, and Fe-Mn oxides (19%) using a sequential extraction method.

Accurate and precise determination of isotopic ratios by MC-ICP-MS: a review

For many decades the accurate and precise determination of isotope ratios has remained a very strong interest to many researchers due to its important applications in earth, environmental, biological, archeological, and medical sciences. Traditionally, thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) has been the technique of choice for achieving the highest accuracy and precision. However, recent developments in multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) have brought a new dimension to this field. In addition to its simple and robust sample introduction, high sample throughput, and high mass resolution, the flat-topped peaks generated by this technique provide for accurate and precise determination of isotope ratios with precision reaching 0.001%, comparable to that achieved with TIMS. These features, in combination with the ability of the ICP source to ionize nearly all elements in the periodic table, have resulted in an increased use of MC-ICP-MS for such measurements in various sample matrices. To determine accurate and precise isotope ratios with MC-ICP-MS, utmost care must be exercised during sample preparation, optimization of the instrument, and mass bias corrections. Unfortunately, there are inconsistencies and errors evident in many MC-ICP-MS publications, including errors in mass bias correction models. This review examines "state-of-the-art" methodologies presented in the literature for achievement of precise and accurate determinations of isotope ratios by MC-ICP-MS. Some general rules for such accurate and precise measurements are suggested, and calculations of combined uncertainty of the data using a few common mass bias correction models are outlined.

Precise Determination of Pu Isotopes in a Seawater Reference Material Using ID-SF-ICP-MS Combined with Two-stage Anion-Exchange Chromatography

In order to obtain the precise Pu isotope composition of Irish Sea water reference material issued by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA-381), we analyzed the activities of (239)Pu, (240)Pu and the atom ratio of (240)Pu/(239)Pu by a highly sensitive isotope dilution SF-ICP-MS method combined with two-stage chromatographic separation and purification. With a mean chemical yield of 65% for (242)Pu tracer, the experimentally established values for (239)Pu, (240)Pu and (239+240)Pu activities are in good agreement with the certified ones. For the (240)Pu/(239)Pu atom ratio, we obtain a value of 0.2315 +/- 0.0008 with a high precision (RSD, 0.35%), which is much more precise than the information value of 0.22 +/- 0.03 (RSD, 13.6%) provided by the IAEA certification report. The precise determination of Pu isotopes in this seawater reference material will be useful for the validation of analytical methods for the study of radionuclides in the marine environment.
