Abstract
The presence of microplastics (MPs) products and particles in the environment can significantly impact the human body. Most MPs that enter the environment also enter the water cycle. During sunlight light irradiation (especially ultraviolet (UV) part) or UV disinfection, many of these MPs, particularly those rich in surface functional groups like thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), undergo physicochemical changes that can affect the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). This study investigates the physicochemical changes of TPU in water after exposure to UV irradiation and incubation in the dark, as well as the formation of DBPs after chlorination. The results show that TPU undergo chain breakage, oxidation, and cross-linking when exposed to UV irradiation in an aqueous system. This leads to fragmentation into smaller particles, which facilitates the synthesis of DBPs. Subsequent research has demonstrated that the TPU leaching solution produces a significantly higher DBP content than the chlorination of TPU MPs, particularly at high concentrations of CHCl3. Therefore, it is important to give greater consideration to the soluble DBP precursors released by TPU.

Abstract
Effective and affordable disinfection technology is one key to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6. In this work, we develop a process by integrating Far-UVC irradiation at 222 nm with free chlorine (UV222/chlorine) for rapid inactivation of the chlorine-resistant and opportunistic Aspergillus niger spores in drinking water. The UV222/chlorine process achieves a 5.0-log inactivation of the A. niger spores at a chlorine dosage of 3.0 mg L-1 and a UV fluence of 30 mJ cm-2 in deionized water, tap water, and surface water. The inactivation rate constant of the spores by the UV222/chlorine process is 0.55 min-1, which is 4.6-fold, 5.5-fold, and 1.8-fold, respectively, higher than those of the UV222 alone, chlorination alone, and the conventional UV254/chlorine process under comparable conditions. The more efficient inactivation by the UV222/chlorine process is mainly attributed to the enhanced generation of reactive chlorine species (e.g., 6.7 × 10-15 M of Cl•) instead of hydroxyl radicals from UV222 photolysis of chlorine, which is verified through both experiments and a kinetic model. We further demonstrate that UV222 photolysis damages the membrane integrity and benefits the penetration of chlorine and radicals into cells for inactivation. The merits of the UV222/chlorine process over the UV254/chlorine process also include the more effective inhibition of the photoreactivation of the spores after disinfection and the lower formation of chlorinated disinfection byproducts and toxicity.

Abstract
Recently, the contamination of fungi in water has aroused widespread concern, which will pose a threat to water quality and safety, and raise diseases risk in the immunocompromised individuals. In this review, the characteristics and different physiological state of fungi in water are summarized. A comprehensive evaluation of the control efficiency and mechanism of waterborne fungi by the commonly used disinfection methods is provided as well. During the disinfection processes of chlorine, chlorine dioxide, chloramine and advanced disinfection processes (ADPs) such as O3-based ADPs and UV-based ADPs, the fungal spores firstly lost their culturability, followed by membrane integrity, and the intracellular reactive oxygen species level increased at the same time, eventually the fungal spores were completely inactivated. The security strategies of drinking water against the contamination of fungi are also discussed in terms of water sources, water treatment plants and pipe network. Finally, future researches need to be explored are proposed: the rapid detection methods, the production laws and control of mycotoxin, and the outbreak conditions of fungi in water. Specifically, exploring efficient, safe and economical technologies, especially ADPs, is still the main direction in the disinfection of fungi in future studies. This review can offer a comprehensive understanding on the occurrence and control of fungi in water to fill the knowledge gap and provide guidance for the future research.

Abstract
Waterborne fungi pose a potential threat to water supply safety due to their high resistance to disinfectants. Peracetic acid, as a promising alternative disinfectant to chlorine, has attracted increasing attention in water treatment. In this study, the inactivation of two dominant fungal species (Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus) by sequential application of peracetic acid and ultraviolet (PAA-UV/PAA) was reported for the first time. Results revealed that the pre-exposure of PAA could facilitate the subsequent process of UV/PAA combination and shorten the lag phase in fungi inactivation. After 10 min of PAA pre-exposure, PAA-UV/PAA achieved 3.03 and 2.40 log inactivation of Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus, which were 2- and 4.3-fold higher than that of direct UV/PAA under the same UV and PAA doses. PAA-UV/PAA disinfection also exhibited a stronger regrowth inhibition for incompletely inactivated fungal spores than direct UV/PAA. The increase of pH (5.0-9.0) and humic acid concentration (1.0-5.0 mg L - 1) showed an inhibitory effect on PAA-UV/PAA inactivation, but PAA-UV/PAA was more adaptable in a wide pH range and the presence of humic acid compared to direct UV/PAA. The more severe cell membrane damage and higher reactive oxygen species level in PAA-UV/PAA were evidenced for the first time by flow cytometry. The increased hydroxyl radical generation and higher synergism were primarily responsible for inactivation improvement. This study enhances the further understanding of the PAA-UV/PAA process, and the findings are expected to promote the development of PAA as a promising disinfectant for effective fungi control.

Abstract
Fungi in drinking water have been long neglected due to the lack of convenient analysis methods, widely accepted regulations and efficient control strategies. However, in the last few decades, fungi in drinking water have been widely recognized as opportunity pathogens that cause serious damage to the health of immune-compromised individuals. In drinking water treatment plants, fungal spores are more resistant to chlorine disinfection than bacteria and viruses, which can regrow in drinking water distribution systems and subsequently pose health threats to water consumers. In addition, fungi in drinking water may represent an ignored source of taste and odor (T&O). This review identified 74 genera of fungi isolated from drinking water and presented their detailed taxonomy, sources and biomass levels in drinking water systems. The typical pathways of exposure of water-borne fungi and the main effects on human health are clarified. The fungi producing T&O compounds and their products are summarized. Data on free chlorine or monochloramine inactivation of fungal spores and other pathogens are compared. At the first time, we suggested four chlorine-resistant mechanisms including aggregation to tolerate chlorine, strong cell walls, cellular responses to oxidative stress and antioxidation of melanin, which are instructive for the future fungi control attempts. Finally, the inactivation performance of fungal spores by various technologies are comprehensively analyzed. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of fungi distribution and risks in drinking water, provide insight into the chlorine resistance mechanisms of fungal spores and propose approaches for the control of fungi in drinking water.

Abstract
Melanin is a critical component of fungal cell wall which protect fungi from adverse environmental tress. However, the role of melanin for fungi during the disinfection with chlorine-based disinfectants has not been elucidated. The results showed that the inactivation rate constants of Aspergillus niger with chlorine and chlorine dioxide decreased from 0.08 to 2.10 min-1 to 0 after addition of 0.32 mg/L melanin. The results indicated addition of extracted fungal melanin inhibited the inactivation efficiency of chlorine and chlorine dioxide. In contrast, the k of Aspergillus niger after inactivation with monochloramine ranged from 1.50 to 1.78 min-1 after addition of melanin which indicated effect of melanin on the inactivation efficiency of monochloramine was negligible. In addition, the extracted fungal melanin exhibited high reactivity with chlorine and chlorine dioxide but very low reactivity with monochloramine. The different inactivation mechanisms of chlorine-based disinfectants and different reactivity of melanin with chlorine-based disinfectants led to the different protective mechanism of melanin for A. niger and A. flavus spores against disinfection with chlorine-based disinfectants. The chlorine and chlorine dioxide appeared to react with functional groups of melanin in cell wall of spores, so sacrificial reactions between melanin and disinfectants decreased the available disinfectants and limited the diffusion of disinfectants to the reactive site on cell membrane, which led to the decrease of the disinfection efficiency for chlorine and chlorine dioxide. The monochloramine could penetrate into cell and damage DNA without the effect of melanin due to its strong penetration and low reactivity with melanin. Our results systematically demonstrate the protective roles of melanin on the fungal spores against chlorine-based disinfectants and the underlying mechanisms in resisting the environmental stress caused by chlorine-based disinfectants, which provides important implications for the control of fungi, especially for fungi producing melanin.

Abstract
Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are undergoing prosperous development in recent years. More than 30,000 papers which are indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) have been published on IEMs during the past twenty years (2001-2020). Especially, more than 3000 papers are published in the year of 2020, revealing researchers' great interest in this area. This paper firstly reviews the different types (e.g., cation exchange membrane, anion exchange membrane, proton exchange membrane, bipolar membrane) and electrochemical properties (e.g., permselectivity, electrical resistance/ionic conductivity) of IEMs and the corresponding working principles, followed by membrane synthesis methods, including the common solution casting method. Especially, as a promising future direction, green synthesis is critically discussed. IEMs are extensively applied in various applications, which can be generalized into two big categories, where the water-based category mainly includes electrodialysis, diffusion dialysis and membrane capacitive deionization, while the energy-based category mainly includes reverse electrodialysis, fuel cells, redox flow battery and electrolysis for hydrogen production. These applications are comprehensively discussed in this paper. This review may open new possibilities for the future development of IEMs.

Abstract
Effective control of fungal contamination in water is vital to provide healthy and safe drinking water for human beings. Although ozone was highly effective in inactivating fungi in water, it was limited by a lack of continuous disinfection ability in water supply system. In present study, the inactivation of fungal spores by combining ozone and chlorine was investigated. The synergistic effects of Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma harzianum spores reached 0.47- and 0.55-log within 10 min, respectively. The inactivation efficiency and the synergistic effect would be affected by disinfectant concentration, pH, and temperature. The combined inactivation caused more violent oxidative stimulation and more severe damage to the fungal spores than the individual inactivation based on the flow cytometry analysis and the scanning electron microscopy observation. The synergistic effect during the combined inactivation process was attributed to the generation of hydroxyl radicals by the reaction between ozone and chlorine and the promotion of chlorine penetration by the destruction of cell wall by ozone. The combined inactivation efficiency in natural water samples was reduced by 26.4-43.8% compared with that in PBS. The results of this study provided an efficient and feasible disinfection method for the control of fungi in drinking water.

Abstract
Drinking water distribution systems host extensive microbiomes with diverse biofilm communities regardless of treatment, disinfection, or operational practices. In Mediterranean countries higher temperatures can accelerate reactions and microbial growth that may increase aesthetic water quality issues, particularly where material deposits can develop as a result of net zero flows within looped urban networks. This study investigated the use of flow and turbidity monitoring to hydraulically manage mobilisation of pipe wall biofilms and associated material from the Mediterranean city of Valencia (Spain). Pipe sections of different properties were subjected to controlled incremental flushing with monitoring and sample collection for physico-chemical and DNA analysis with Illumina sequencing of bacterial and fungal communities. A core microbial community was detected throughout the network with microorganisms like Pseudomonas, Aspergillus or Alternaria increasing during flushing, indicating greater abundance in underlying and more consolidated material layers. Bacterial and fungal communities were found to be highly correlated, with bacteria more diverse and dynamic during flushing whilst fungi were more dominant and less variable between sampling sites. Results highlight that water quality management can be achieved through hydraulic strategies yet understanding community dynamics, including the fungal component, will be key to maintaining safe and ultimately beneficial microbiomes in drinking water distribution systems.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been considered as emerging contaminants of concern nowadays. There are no special technologies designed to directly remove ARGs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In order to reduce the risk of ARGs, it is vital to understand the efficiency of advanced treatment technologies in removing antibiotic resistance genes in WWTPs. This review highlights the application and efficiency of tertiary treatment technologies on the elimination of ARGs, s, based on an understanding of their occurrence and fate in WWTPs. These technologies include chemical-based processes such as chlorination, ozonation, ultraviolet, and advanced oxidation technology, as well as physical separation processes, biological processes such as constructed wetland and membrane bioreactor, and soil aquifer treatment. The merits, limitations and ameliorative measures of these processes are discussed, with the view to optimizing future treatment strategies and identifying new research directions.

Abstract
Exposure to viable bacterial and fungal spores re-aerosolized from air handling filters may create a major health risk. Assessing and controlling this exposure have been of interest to the bio-defense and indoor air quality communities. Methods are being developed for inactivating stress-resistant viable microorganisms collected on ventilation filters. Here we investigated the inactivation of spores of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk), a recognized simulant for B. antracis, and Aspergillus fumigatus, a common opportunistic pathogen used as an indicator for indoor air quality. The viability change was measured on filters treated with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and gaseous iodine. The spores were collected on high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) and non-HEPA filters, both flattened for testing purposes to represent "surface" filters. A mixed cellulose ester (MCE) membrane filter was also tested as a reference. Additionally, a commercial HEPA unit with a deep-bed (non-flattened) filter was tested. Combined treatments of Btk spores with UV and iodine on MCE filter produced a synergistic inactivation effect. No similar synergy was observed for A. fumigatus. For spores collected on an MCE filter, the inactivation effect was about an order of magnitude greater for Btk compared to A. fumigatus. The filter type was found to be an important factor affecting the inactivation of Btk spores while it was not as influential for A. fumigatus. Overall, the combined effect of UV irradiation and gaseous iodine on viable bacterial and fungal spores collected on flat filters was found to be potent. The benefit of either simultaneous or sequential treatment was much lower for Btk spores embedded inside the deep-bed (non-flattened) HEPA filter, but for A. fumigatus the inactivation on flattened and non-flattened HEPA filters was comparable. For both species, applying UV first and gaseous iodine second produced significantly higher inactivation than when applying them simultaneously or in an opposite sequence.

Abstract
Fungi in aquatic environments received more attention recently; therefore, the characteristics of inactivation of fungal spores by widely used disinfectants are quite important. Nonetheless, the inactivation efficacy of fungal spores by chlorine dioxide is poorly known. In this study, the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide at inactivation of three dominant genera of fungal spores isolated from drinking groundwater and the effects of pH, temperature, chlorine dioxide concentration, and humic acid were evaluated. The inactivation mechanisms were explored by analyzing the leakage of intracellular substances, the increase in extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and proteins as well as the changes in spore morphology. The kinetics of inactivation by chlorine dioxide fitted the Chick-Watson model, and different fungal species showed different resistance to chlorine dioxide inactivation, which was in the following order: Cladosporium sp.>Trichoderma sp. >Penicillium sp., which are much more resistant than Escherichia coli. Regarding the three genera of fungal spores used in this study, chlorine dioxide was more effective at inactivation of fungal spores than chlorine. The effect of disinfectant concentration and temperature was positive, and the impact of pH levels (6.0 and 7.0) was insignificant, whereas the influence of water matrices on the inactivation efficiency was negative. The increased concentration of characteristic extracellular substances and changes of spore morphology were observed after inactivation with chlorine dioxide and were due to cell wall and cell membrane damage in fungal spores, causing the leakage of intracellular substances and death of a fungal spore.

Abstract
The B-series fumonisins (FBs) are some of the most prevalent mycotoxins produced as a secondary metabolite by Fusarium species growing on cereals. For decades they have been studied extensively in food and feed products, but there is no information about their occurrence in the aquatic environment or about how these mycotoxins are transported to the surface water and the groundwater. The aim of this study was to clarify the causes of fumonisin occurrence in aquatic ecosystems by examining the relation between mycotoxin contamination of crops and their levels in the aquatic environment. Water samples were collected from drainage ditches and wells or watercourses located in agricultural areas in the Wielkopolska region, Poland. Our research conducted on an annual basis showed the seasonal variability of fumonisin B1 concentration in the analyzed water samples, with the highest concentration in the post-harvest season (September to October) at 48.2 ng L(-1), and the lowest in winter and spring at 21.9 ng L(-1). Fumonisins B2 and B3 in water samples were not detected. Cereal samples were collected in the harvest season from each agricultural area close to tested water bodies. Mycotoxins were present in all cereal samples at concentrations from 43.3 to 1055.9 ng g(-1). Our results confirm that fumonisins are transported to aquatic systems by rainwater through soil. On the basis of available literature, this is the first report concerning the presence of fumonisin B1 in different aquatic environments. To date their ecotoxicological effects are largely unknown and require further investigation.

This study investigated disinfection methods including chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and sequential UV/chlorination treatment on the inactivation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). ARGs including sul1, tetX, tetG, intI1, and 16S rRNA genes in municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP) effluent were examined. The results indicated a positive correlation between the removal of ARGs and chlorine dosage (p=0.007-0.014, n=6),as well as contact time (p=0.0001, n=10). Greater free chlorine (FC) dosage leads to higher removal for all the genes and the maximum removal (1.30-1.49 logs) could be achieved at FC dosage of 30 mg L(-1). The transformation kinetic data for ARGs removal (log C0/C) followed the second-order reaction kinetic model with FC dosage (R(2)=0.6829-0.9999) and contact time (R(2)=0.7353-8634), respectively. Higher ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) concentration was found to lead to lower removal of ARGs at the same chlorine dosage. When the applied Cl2:NH3-N ratio was over 7.6:1, a significant reduction of ARGs (1.20-1.49 logs) was achieved. By using single UV irradiation, the log removal values of tetX and 16Ss rRNA genes were 0.58 and 0.60, respectively, while other genes were 0.36-0.40 at a fluence of 249.5 mJ cm(-2), which was observed to be less effective than chlorination. With sequential UV/chlorination treatment, 0.006 to 0.31 log synergy values of target genes were observed under different operation parameters.
