Sorption behavior of nonylphenol (NP) on sewage-irrigated soil: kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Bacterial community composition and indicators of water quality in Caizi lake, a typical Yangtze-connected freshwater lake

Caizi Lake is an important lake connected to the Yangtze River in Anhui Province and a crucial connection for the Yangtze-to-Huaihe Water Diversion Project (YHWD). There were marked differences in trophic status of the six sampling sites based on the physicochemical characterization. The Bacterial Eutrophic Index (BEI), used to quantify water quality, was well related to Carlson's trophic state index (TSI) (Spearman's ρ = 0.829, P < 0.05). Mean TSI and BEI were 54 and 0.58, respectively, indicating that Caizi Lake was slightly eutrophic. Actinobacteriota were the predominant bacterial phylum in the water and Acidobacteriota in sediments. The diversity and composition of the bacterial community was markedly different between sites for water but not sediment samples. Unlike other Yangtze-connected freshwater lakes, the distance-based redundancy analysis (db-RDA) revealed that dissolved oxygen (DO) affected the composition of the planktonic bacterial community (P < 0.001) while total phosphorus (TP) was the major factor in the sediments (P < 0.05). Water quality of Caizi Lake significantly improved since a few years ago. These results contribute to the long-term monitoring of the ecological quality of the water environment along the Yangtze River to the Huaihe River.

Efficient Removal of Nonylphenol Contamination from Water Using Optimized Magnesium Silicate

Nonylphenol (NP) is considered to be an environmentally toxic, endocrine-disrupting chemical that affects humans and ecosystems. Adsorption is one of the most promising approaches for the removal of nonylphenol contamination from water. Herein, in order to design an adsorbent with high adsorption capacity, magnesium silicate with different Mg/Si ratios was successfully synthesized by a sol–gel method at 60 °C. Magnesium silicate with a Mg/Si ratio of 1:6 was found to possess the best adsorption performance, with maximum 4−NP sorption 30.84 mg/g under 25 °C and 0.2 g/L adsorbent dose. The adsorption was negatively affected by increasing adsorbent dose and temperature. The kinetics and isotherm of 4−NP adsorption by Mg/Si were well described by the pseudo−second−order and Sips model, respectively, and behavior was proven to be physisorption−enhanced by a chemical effect. Detailed characterization by XRD, BET, and SEM confirmed that the magnesium silicate possesses an amorphous, mesoporous structure. The study will contribute to the applicability of cheap magnesium silicate for removal of NP contamination in water.

Insight into the hetero-interactions of 4-nonylphenol with dissolved organic matter: multiple spectroscopic methods, 1H NMR study and principal component analysis

Understanding the interactions between heterogeneous dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nonylphenols (NPs) is essential for predicting their behavior and fate in the environment. Herein, we firstly obtained different MW-fractionated humic acids (HAs) using the ultrafiltration method. Afterward, the molecular weight (MW)-dependent interactions of HAs with 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) were analysed by excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence quenching, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and principal component analysis (PCA). EEM spectra indicated that the quenching mechanism was static. In the binding process, the higher MW fractions showed stronger interaction with 4-NP than the lower MW counterparts, exhibiting a clear MW-dependent interaction heterogeneity. The interaction constants for the 4-NP–HAs system were suppressed as the ionic strength decreased and pH increased, which was especially obvious in the binding of 4-NP to the lower MW-fractionated HAs. The FTIR spectra revealed that hydroxyl and aromatics were involved in the interaction process of HA fractions with 4-NP. It was also found from ¹H NMR that π–π interactions between aromatic rings of 4-NP and MW-fractionated HAs were responsible for the complexation. The correlation analysis and PCA results indicated that aromaticity and MW play important roles in the interaction process and confirmed an obvious interaction heterogeneity among MW-fractionated HAs samples. This work highlighted MW-dependent interaction heterogeneities of HA, which suggested that heterogeneity in MW distribution should be taken into consideration when exploring the fate and biogeochemistry cycling of 4-NP from contaminated environments.

Effects of soil organic carbon (SOC) content and accessibility in subsoils on the sorption processes of the model pollutants nonylphenol (4-n-NP) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)

Subsoils control the release of hydrophobic pollutants to groundwater systems, but the role of subsoil soil organic carbon (SOC) in sorption processes of hydrophobic organic pollutants remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to understand the role of subsoil SOC in sorption processes of 4-n-nonylphenol (NP) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) as model pollutants. To characterize the sorption behavior of NP and PFOA, 42 sub- and 54 topsoil samples were used for batch experiments. Differences in NP and PFOA sorption between sub- and topsoil samples and its mechanisms were identified using multiple regression analysis. Generally, the sorption of NP and PFOA was linear in all samples. The sorption of NP to soil samples (log_KD = 1.78-3.68) was significantly higher and less variable than that of PFOA (log_KD = -0.97-1.44). In topsoils, SOC content had the highest influence on NP and PFOA sorption. For NP, hydrophobic interactions between NP and SOC were identified as the most important sorption mechanism. For PFOA, hydrophobic as well as electrostatic interactions were determined depending on soil pH. In subsoils, the relevance of SOC content for pollutant sorption decreased drastically. For NP, not SOC content but rather SOC quality was relevant in SOC poor subsoils. For PFOA, clay and iron oxide content were found to be relevant for pollutant interactions with the solid phase. Thus, especially in SOC depleted subsoils, the sorption potential for PFOA remained unpredictable.

Stabilizing of poly(amidoamine) dendrimer on the surface of sand for the removal of nonylphenol from water: Batch and column studies

In this work, a novel adsorbent with stabilizing of PAMAM dendrimer on the surface of sand was successfully synthesized and used to remove NP from water. The characterization of the adsorbent was performed by XRD, FTIR, TEM, and FE-SEM. Batch and column studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of the adsorbent. It was found that Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order models are perfectly stimulated the adsorption behavior and kinetic rate of NP uptake. In column study, first the effect of bed depth, flow rate and initial concentration of NP on the performance of the adsorbent were evaluated then the breakthrough curve for each condition was drawn. Finally, Thomas model constants to describe NP adsorption were calculated. As the result of the experiments, it might be concluded that in conventional water treatment plants which the removal of NP is negligible, the use of synthesized adsorbent as a filter media can be a promising way to selectively remove NP from water.

Structural characteristics, analytical techniques and interactions with organic contaminants of dissolved organic matter derived from crop straw: a critical review

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) represents one of the most mobile and reactive organic compounds in an ecosystem and plays an important role in the fate and transport of soil organic pollutants, nutrient cycling and more importantly global climate change. Advances in environment geochemistry in the past two decades have improved our knowledge about the genesis, composition, and structure of DOM, and its effect on the environment. Application of analytical technology, for example UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM) have resulted in these advances. At present, crop straw, as a part of energy development strategy, is mainly used for soil amendment, fodder, fertilizer and industrial materials. Moreover, the fermentation and decomposition of straw should be also promoted for ecological agriculture. However, few studies have focused on the structural properties of DOM derived from crop straw in farmland soil. In this article, DOM derived from crop straw, which is abbreviated to "CDOM", presents active physicochemical properties that can affect the migration and bioavailability of organic contaminants (OCs) in terrestrial ecosystems. The objectives of this review paper are: (i) to discuss the structural characteristics, analytical techniques and interactions between CDOM and OCs in farmland soil; (ii) to present a critical analysis of the impact of CDOM on the physicochemical transformation and transport of OCs in farmland soils; (iii) to provide the perspectives in future research. Therefore, the findings obtained from this study can be utilized to evaluate the relations of interactions between CDOM and OCs in agricultural soils, in order to support some suggestions for future development in agricultural waste recycling, buffering of organic pollution, and the effect on the global carbon cycle.

Seasonal characteristics of phosphorus sorption by sediments from plain lakes with different trophic statuses

Phosphorus (P) sorption in sediments plays a significant role in trophic status of a lake. This study investigated the characteristics of P sorption in sediments from three lakes with different trophic statuses (moderately eutrophic, lightly eutrophic and moderately trophic) through kinetic, batch equilibrium and thermodynamic experiments. Results show that pseudo-second-order kinetics best describe P sorption in sediments from the three lakes. Fitting by modified Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms indicates that the moderately trophic lake sediment has higher sorption capacity (maximum of 0.848 mg g-1 at 35°C) than the sediments of the other two lakes at different temperatures (5, 15, 25 and 35°C). Thermodynamic results indicate that the processes of P sorption of the three sediments are spontaneous, entropy-driven and endothermic reactions. The risk of P release in sediments was analysed according to the calculated results of isotherms combined with the change in P fraction. Sediments from the moderately eutrophic lake act as a source in summer. The lightly eutrophic and moderately trophic lakes act as sources in spring and winter, and a pool in summer and autumn, respectively. Furthermore, the amounts of reductant-soluble P, calcium-bound P and iron-bound P are significantly related to the sorption capacity of sediments from the three lakes (p < 0.05). The different sediments have different P release risk, and P fraction in sediment is one of the significant factors of P sorption.

Evaluation and mechanism of ammonia nitrogen removal using sediments from a malodorous river

Malodorous rivers are among the major environmental problems of cities in developing countries. In addition to the unpleasant smell, the sediments of such rivers can act as a sink for pollutants. The excessive amount of ammonia nitrogen (NH₃-N) in rivers is the main factor that causes the malodour. Therefore, a suitable method is necessary for sediment disposition and NH₃-N removal in malodorous rivers. The sediment in a malodorous river (PS) in Beijing, China was selected and modified via calcination (PS-D), Na⁺ doping (PS-Na) and calcination-Na⁺ doping (PS-DNa). The NH₃-N removal efficiency using the four sediment materials was evaluated, and results indicated that the NH₃-N removal efficiency using the modified sediment materials could reach over 60%. PS-DNa achieved the highest NH₃-N removal efficiency (90.04%). The kinetics study showed that the pseudo-second-order model could effectively describe the sorption kinetics and that the exterior activated site had the main function of P sorption. The results of the sorption isotherms indicated that the maximum sorption capacities of PS-Na, PS-D and PS-DNa were 0.343, 0.831 and 1.113 mg g^-1, respectively, and a high temperature was favourable to sorption. The calculated thermodynamic parameters suggested that sorption was a feasible or spontaneous (ΔG < 0), entropy-driven (ΔS > 0), and endothermic (ΔH > 0) reaction.

Characterization of sediment bacterial communities in plain lakes with different trophic statuses

Sediment microbial communities play an important role in lake trophic status. This study determined millions of Illumina reads (16S rRNA gene amplicons) to compare the bacterial communities in moderately eutrophic, lightly eutrophic, and moderately trophic regions using a technically consistent approach. The results indicated that the sediments from moderately eutrophic and trophic lake had the higher bacterial diversity than lightly eutrophic lake. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum (22.7%–86.2%) across samples from three regions. The sediments from moderately eutrophic region were enriched with Chloroflexi and Nitrospirae. Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were enriched in the sediments from lightly eutrophic lake. The sediments from moderately trophic lake contained a high abundance of Acidobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria because of the low pH of the sediments in this lake. In moderately eutrophic region, Nitrospira held an absolute predominance, while Lysobacter and Flavobacterium were the most predominant genera in lightly eutrophic region. Temperature was the main factor influencing the bacterial community in the three lakes. The bacterial communities in the sediment samples obtained from moderately eutrophic lake were associated with nutrient concentration, whereas organic matter and total nitrogen contents mainly influenced the bacterial communities in sediments obtained from lightly eutrophic lake and moderately trophic lake, respectively.

Enhanced removal of phosphate and nitrate ions from aqueous media using nanosized lanthanum hydrous doped on magnetic graphene nanocomposite

A novel nanocomposite adsorbent based on nanosized lanthanum hydroxide doped onto magnetic reduced graphene oxide (MG@La) was synthesized and used for removal of phosphate and nitrate ions from river and sewage media. The composition, surface properties and morphology of the as prepared adsorbent were studied using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The influence of main parameters on the efficiency of removal process including adsorbent dosage, salt addition, solution pH, contact time, and concentration of the analytes were thoroughly investigated. The validity of the experimental process was checked by the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics models. The obtained data were well fitted to Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The developed adsorbent showed high adsorption capacities of 116.28 mg g^-1 and 138.88 mg g^-1 for phosphate and nitrate ions, respectively. Additionally, Langmuir isotherm and free energy were suggested monolayer pattern and physisorption mechanism for adsorption process, respectively. Finally, the field application of newly synthesized MG@La provided high removal efficiencies (74%-90%) for phosphate and nitrate ions in real river and sewage water samples.

Isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic study of ciprofloxacin sorption on sediments

In this study, equilibrium isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of ciprofloxacin on seven sediments in a batch sorption process were examined. The effects of contact time, initial ciprofloxacin concentration, temperature and ionic strength on the sorption process were studied. The K _d parameter from linear sorption model was determined by linear regression analysis, while the Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) sorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms by linear and nonlinear methods. The estimated K _d values varied from 171 to 37,347 mL/g. The obtained values of E (free energy estimated from D-R isotherm model) were between 3.51 and 8.64 kJ/mol, which indicated a physical nature of ciprofloxacin sorption on studied sediments. According to obtained n values as measure of intensity of sorption estimate from Freundlich isotherm model (from 0.69 to 1.442), ciprofloxacin sorption on sediments can be categorized from poor to moderately difficult sorption characteristics. Kinetics data were best fitted by the pseudo-second-order model (R ² > 0.999). Thermodynamic parameters including the Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) were calculated to estimate the nature of ciprofloxacin sorption. Results suggested that sorption on sediments was a spontaneous exothermic process.

Removal of trace nonylphenol from water in the coexistence of suspended inorganic particles and NOMs by using a cellulose-based flocculant

A flocculation method was used for the removal of trace nonylphenol (NP) from synthetic surface water containing natural organic matters (humic acid, HA) and suspended inorganic particles (kaolin). A polymeric flocculant (CMCND), with enhanced cationic property and unique switchable hydrophobic/hydrophilic characteristic, was specially designed for this application. CMCND showed a high efficiency for trace NP removal, turbidity and UV254 abatements: under optimized conditions (pH: 4; T: 35 °C; dosage: 40 mg/L), the removal of NP reached up to 79%. By using dosage-pH flocculation diagrams and correlation analyses as tools, kaolin and HA were found to exert synergistic effects on NP removal, with the aid of CMCND; the synergistic effect of HA is higher due to π-π stacking. Zeta potential-dosage profiles clearly demonstrated charge neutralization predominated at pH 4, due to the strong cationic groups in the flocculant. Floc size monitoring displayed that the delayed phase transformation process (from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity) of CMCND at 35 °C enhanced NP removal. In addition, spectral analyses clarified the interactions among CMCND, NP, kaolin and HA: charge attraction and hydrophobic interaction between CMCND and NP played the key roles. The findings are of significance for removing endocrine-disrupting chemicals in environmental remediation.

Profiling of Sediment Microbial Community in Dongting Lake before and after Impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam

The sediment microbial community in downstream-linked lakes can be affected by the operation of large-scale water conservancy projects. The present study determined Illumina reads (16S rRNA gene amplicons) to analyze and compare the bacterial communities from sediments in Dongting Lake (China) before and after impoundment of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), the largest hydroelectric project in the world. Bacterial communities in sediment samples in Dongting Lake before impoundment of the TGD (the high water period) had a higher diversity than after impoundment of the TGD (the low water period). The most abundant phylum in the sediment samples was Proteobacteria (36.4%–51.5%), and this result was due to the significant abundance of Betaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria in the sediment samples before impoundment of the TGD and the abundance of Gammaproteobacteria in the sediment samples after impoundment of the TGD. In addition, bacterial sequences of the sediment samples are also affiliated with Acidobacteria (11.0% on average), Chloroflexi (10.9% on average), Bacteroidetes (6.7% on average), and Nitrospirae (5.1% on average). Variations in the composition of the bacterial community within some sediment samples from the river estuary into Dongting Lake were related to the pH values. The bacterial community in the samples from the three lake districts of Dongting Lake before and after impoundment of the TGD was linked to the nutrient concentration.

Spatial distribution and migration of nonylphenol in groundwater following long-term wastewater irrigation

Seen as a solution to water shortages, wastewater reuse for crop irrigation does however poses a risk owing to the potential release of organic contaminants into soil and water. The frequency of detection (FOD), concentration, and migration of nonylphenol (NP) isomers in reclaimed water (FODRW), surface water (FODSW), and groundwater (FODGW) were investigated in a long-term wastewater irrigation area in Beijing. The FODRW, FODSW and FODGW of any or all of 12 NP isomers were 66.7% to 100%, 76.9% to 100% and 13.3% to 60%, respectively. The mean (±standard deviation) NP concentrations of the reclaimed water, surface water, and groundwater (NPRW, NPSW, NPGW, repectively) were 469.4±73.4 ng L(-1), 694.6±248.7 ng(-1) and 244.4±230.8 ng(-1), respectively. The existence of external pollution sources during water transmission and distribution resulted in NPSW exceeding NPRW. NP distribution in groundwater was related to the duration and quantity of wastewater irrigation, the sources of aquifer recharge, and was seen to decrease with increasing aquifer depth. Higher riverside infiltration rate nearby leads to higher FODGW values. The migration rate of NP isomers was classified as high, moderate or low.

Bisphenol A, nonylphenols, benzophenones, and benzotriazoles in soils, groundwater, surface water, sediments, and food: a review

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are not commonly monitored in the environment, but they can enter the environment from a variety of sources. The most worrying consequence of their wide use and environmental diffusion is the increase in the possible exposure pathways for humans. Moreover, knowledge of their behavior in the environment, toxicity, and biological effects is limited or not available for most CECs. The aim of this work is to edit the state of the art on few selected CECs having the potential to enter the soil and aquatic systems and cause adverse effects in humans, wildlife, and the environment: bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), benzophenones (BPs), and benzotriazole (BT). Some reviews are already available on BPA and NP, reporting about their behavior in surface water and sediments, but scarce and scattered information is available about their presence in soil and groundwater. Only a few studies are available about BPs and BT in the environment, in particular in soil and groundwater. This work summarizes the information available in the literature about the incidence and behavior of these compounds in the different environmental matrices and food. In particular, the review focuses on the physical-chemical properties, the environmental fate, the major degradation byproducts, and the environmental evidence of the selected CECs.

Effect of ionic strength on phosphorus sorption in different sediments from a eutrophic plateau lake

The sorption of sulfamethazine on soil samples: isotherms and error analysis

In this paper, batch sorption of sulfamethazine on eight soil samples (six from Croatia and two from Bosnia and Hercegovina) with different organic matter contents ranging from 1.52 to 12.8% was investigated. The effects of various parameters such as agitation time, initial concentration, and ionic strength on the sulfamethazine sorption were studied. The experimental data were analysed using a one-parameter model, Linear isotherm, and two two-parameter models, the Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. The goodness of fit was measured using the linear regression and the determination coefficient (R(2)) value. Also, the equilibrium data of the two-parameter models were analysed using the residual root mean square error (RMSE), the sum of squares of errors (ERRSQ), and a composite fractional error function (HYBRID). Non-linear regression has better characteristics for analysing experimental data. The obtained sorption coefficients Kd (from 0.25 to 8.10 mL/g) and the Freundlich sorption coefficients KF (from 1.16 to 7.99 (μg/g)(mL/μg)(1/n)) exhibited quite low values, which indicated that sulfamethazine is weakly adsorbed on the evaluated soils, is highly mobile, and has a great potential to penetrate and pollute the ground water. The Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm was used to estimate the apparent free energy of sorption.
