Potential ecological risk of hazardous elements in different land-use urban soils of Bangladesh

Analysis of changes and driving forces of landscape pattern vulnerability at Qianping Reservoir in Central China

Reservoir projects often have significant impacts on ecosystems. The resulting environmental problems hinder the ecologically sustainable development of project areas. Research focusing on landscape pattern vulnerability could shed light on ecological restoration in disturbed sites. However, few studies have specifically examined reservoir areas in this context. This study investigates the spatial distribution characteristics, change rules, spatial autocorrelation, and driving forces of landscape pattern vulnerability in the Qianping Reservoir area (3859.16 hm2) from 2000 to 2020 using land use data. The findings reveal several key points: (1) Over the study period, cultivated land, grassland, and forest land are the key landscape types, covering more than 90% of the area. Cultivated land decreased by 481.57 hm2 as other land use types expanded. (2) Vulnerability remained stable in the first decade but sharply increased from 2010 to 2020, showing a trend of spatial aggregation. Reservoir construction and simultaneous ecological restoration efforts led to shifts in vulnerability zones across the landscape. (3) Spatial distribution of landscape pattern vulnerability shows a positive correlation, which strengthened by 2020 compared to earlier years. (4) Man-made factors, particularly land use changes, significantly influence landscape pattern vulnerability, with their impact growing over time. These findings not only provide a scientific basis for ecological restoration and landscape reconstruction in the Qianping Reservoir area but also offer insights applicable to similar environments. Overall, this study enhances theoretical understanding of reservoir landscape pattern vulnerability and contributes valuable perspectives on ecological restoration strategies for reservoir areas.

Toxicity factors, ecological and health risk assessments of heavy metal in the urban soil: a case study of an agro-machinery area in a developing country

The contribution of heavy metals in surface soils by the influences of agro-machinery factories is a significant growing concern. Heavy metals were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique to assess human and ecological risks. The concentrations of Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, As, Pb, Mn, Ni, and Zn in soil ranged from 18,274-22,652, 2.06-4.92, 24.8-41.9, 126.8-137.5, 9.20-25.2, 17.8-46.1, 114.4-183.1, 86.9-118.1, and 101.6-159.6 mg/kg, respectively. The enrichment factor values of heavy metals were greater than 1.5, suggesting severe anthropogenic activities such as untreated waste discharging, burning of metallic wastes, wear, and tear, and dismantling of old batteries for heavy metals enrichment in studied soil. The contamination factor indicates considerable to very high contamination of heavy metals in soil. Moderate to high ecological risk was observed for analyzed metals which mainly originated from the maintenance and repairing of various engines in the workshop and welding and soldering of metallic substances. The target hazard quotient (THQ) was ranged from 6.99E-04 to 2.21E-01 for adults and 5.59E-03 to 1.82E + 00 for children, respectively; indicating children were more sensitive to heavy metals exposure from soil dust. The carcinogenic risk of As (1.72E-05) exceeded the USEPA acceptable limits indicating cancer risk to the residence. The current emphasized the significance of intensive heavy metals monitoring in surface soils around the agro-machinery areas due to their potential health risks associated with children.

The critical role of organic matter for cadmium-lead interactions in soil: Mechanisms and risks

Understanding the interaction mechanisms between complex heavy metals and soil components is a prerequisite for effectively forecasting the mobility and availability of contaminants in soils. Soil organic matter (SOM), with its diverse functional groups, has long been a focal point of research interest. In this study, four soils with manipulated levels of SOM, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) were subjected to a 90-day incubation experiment. The competitive interactions between Cd and Pb in soils were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray adsorption near-edge structure (XANES) analysis. Our results indicate that Pb competed with Cd for adsorption sites on the surface of SOM, particularly on carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups. Approximately 22.6 % of Cd adsorption sites on humus were occupied by Pb. The use of sequentially extracted exchangeable heavy metals as indicators for environment risk assessments, considering variations in soil physico-chemical properties and synergistic or antagonistic effects between contaminants, provides a better estimation of metal bioavailability and its potential impacts. Integrating comprehensive contamination characterization of heavy metal interactions with the soil organic phase is an important advancement to assess the environmental risks of heavy metal dynamics in soil compared to individual contamination assessments.

Non-negligible environmental risks of typical hazardous trace elements in wastes from Chinese coal-fired industrial boilers

Coal-fired industrial boilers (CFIBs) that provide heat for industrial production operate to produce large quantities of wastes containing hazardous trace elements (HTEs), threatening the quality of the environment. Based on the established facility-level material flow inventory of five typical HTEs (Hg, As, Cd, Cr, and Pb) of Chinese CFIBs in 2020, we explored the enrichment characteristics and environmental risks of HTEs in wastes at the regional scale from the perspective of substance flow and enrichment levels. Results showed that the shares of HTEs entering the waste stream were 2.2-16.8 % higher in the focus regions of continuous improvement of air quality compared to the non-focus regions, explained by the higher synergistic control efficiencies of their air pollution control facilities (ACPFs), at 86.6-90.4 % (Hg), 98.6-99.1 % (As), 95.1-95.9 % (Cd), 93.2-94.8 % (Cr), and 97.1-98.0 % (Pb), respectively. In addition, the national averages of HTEs in slag, fly ash, and flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) were simulated to be 0.15-0.87 g/t, 3.25-18.44 g/t, 0.30-0.96 g/t, 19.76-70.11 g/t, and 15.85-73.74 for Hg, As, Cd, Cr, and Pb, respectively. Nationally, the integrated environmental risks of the five HTEs in slag, fly ash, and FGD residue exhibited Considerable, Very High, and Very High level of environmental risk, with the cumulative environmental risk indexes of 171, 317, and 281, respectively. Hg and Cd were the major contributors to the environmental risks of slag, fly ash, and FGD residue, with environmental risk contributions ranging from 23.8 to 82.3 % and 16.0 to 66.1 %, respectively. Results can provide data support for modelling the environmental release of HTEs from wastes and formulating control strategies for environmental management agencies.

Spatial distribution and health risks assessment of heavy metals in e-waste dumping sites from Pakistan

The present study focused on to determine the concentration and health risk of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, Cr) in e-waste contaminated soils collected from different provinces of Pakistan. Further, the impact of heavy metals on soil enzyme activities and microbial community was also investigated. The concentration (mg/kg) of Hg, Zn, Fe, Cu, Pb, Cd, and Cr ranged between 0-0.258, 2.284-6.587, 3.005-40.72, 8.67-36.88, 12.05-35.03, 1.03-2.43, and 33.13-60.05, respectively. The results revealed that Lahore site of Punjab province indicated more concentration of heavy metals as compared to other sites. The level of Cr at all sites whereas Hg at only two sites exceeds the World Health Organization standards (WHO) for soil. Soil enzyme activity exhibited dynamic trend among the sites. Maximum enzyme activity was observed for urease followed by phosphatase and catalase. Contamination factor (Cf), Pollution load index (PLI), and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) results showed that all the sites are highly contaminated with Cu, Cd, and Pb. Hazard index (HI) was less than 1 for children and adults suggesting non-carcinogenic health risk. Principle component analysis results depicted relation among Cr, Fr, catalase, and actinomycetes; Cd, OM, urease, and bacteria, and Pb, Cu, Zn, Hg, and phosphatase, suggesting soil enzymes and microbial community profiles were influenced by e-waste pollution. Therefore, there is a dire need to introduce sustainable e-waste recycling techniques as well as to make stringent e-waste management policies to reduce further environmental contamination.

Impacts of solid waste management site on some toxic elements contamination of the surrounding soil in Akure, Nigeria

The distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), their potential bioavailability, extent of contamination and potential risk of dumpsite and surrounding soil samples were appraised. Three (3) soil samples were collected randomly from within the dumpsite and three (3) soil samples were also obtained 50 m away from the perimeter fence of the dumpsite. PTEs in the bulk and fractionated portions were determined using inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results showed that the concentrations of all the PTEs analysed were higher in the dumpsite soil samples than the surrounding samples, suggesting an impact of the dumpsite activities on the soil. The distribution of PTEs varied significantly within the different fractions of both the surrounding and dumpsite soils and their presence were more of anthropogenic than geogenic. The calculated contamination factor/pollution load index (CF/PLI) revealed that the surrounding soil samples fell within the range of moderate contamination, except for Cu and Cr which showed very high contamination. Cd showed the highest value (60.4) for potential ecological risk index (PERI) at the surrounding area. However, the value of Cd in the surrounding soil samples indicated a low ecological risk. The total concentrations of the PTEs were lower than their corresponding target values for both national and international standards, except for Cd (0.15 mg/kg) and Cu (37.3 mg/kg). The study concluded that the dumping of various wastes at the dumpsite was found to be a contributing factor to PTEs contamination of soil at the study area. Hence, an engineered landfill for Akure metropolis is recommended to replace the existing practice.

Biomonitoring potentially toxic elements in atmospheric particulate matter of greater Dhaka region using leaves of higher plants

In this study, four different plant species, namely Artocarpus heterophyllus, Mangifera indica, Psidium guajava, and Swietenia mahagoni, were selected from seven different locations to assess the feasibility of using them as a cost-effective alternative for biomonitoring air quality. Atmospheric coarse particulate matter (PM10), soil samples, and leaf samples were collected from residential, industrial, and traffic-congested sites located in the greater Dhaka region. The heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in the leaves of the different species, PM10, and soil samples were analyzed. The highest Pb (718 ng/m3) and Zn (15,956 ng/m3) concentrations were found in PM10 of Kodomtoli which is an industrial area. On the other hand, the highest Fe (6,152 ng/m3) and Ni (61.1 ng/m3) concentrations were recorded in the PM10 of Gabtoli, a heavy-traffic area. A significant positive correlation (r = 0.74; p < 0.01) between Pb content in plant leaves and PM fraction was found which indicated that atmospheric PM-bound Pb may contribute to the uptake of Pb by plant leaves. The analysis of the enrichment factor (EF) revealed that soils were contaminated with Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The abaxial leaf surfaces of Psidium guajava growing at the polluted site exhibited up to a 40% decrease in stomatal pores compared to the control site. Saet's summary index (Zc) demonstrated that Mangifera indica had the highest bioaccumulation capacity. The metal accumulation index (MAI) was also evaluated to assess the overall metal accumulation capacity of the selected plants. Of the four species, Swietenia mahagoni (3.05) exhibited the highest MAI value followed by Mangifera indica (2.97). Mangifera indica and Swietenia mahagoni were also found to accumulate high concentrations of Pb and Cr in their leaves and are deemed to be good candidates to biomonitor Pb and Cr contents in ambient air.

Assessment of environmental pollution and human health risks of mine tailings in soil: after dam failure of the Córrego do Feijão Mine (in Brumadinho, Brazil)

The dam failure of the Córrego do Feijão Mine (CFM) located in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, killed at least 278 people. In addition, large extensions of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems were destroyed, directly compromising the environmental and socioeconomic quality of the region. This study assessed the pollution and human health risks of soils impacted by the tailing spill of the CFM dam, along a sample perimeter of approximately 200 km. Based on potential ecological risk and pollution load indices, the enrichments of Cd, As, Hg, Cu, Pb and Ni in soils indicated that the Brumadinho, Mário Campos, Betim and São Joaquim de Bicas municipalities were the most affected areas by the broken dam. Restorative and reparative actions must be urgently carried out in these areas. For all contaminated areas, the children's group indicated an exacerbated propensity to the development of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic diseases, mainly through the ingestion pathway. Toxicological risk assessments, including acute, chronic and genotoxic effects, on people living and working in mining areas should be a priority for public management and mining companies to ensure effective environmental measures that do not harm human health and well-being over time.

Receptor model-based source-specific health risks of toxic metal(loid)s in coal basin-induced agricultural soil in northwest Bangladesh

Toxic metal(loid)s (TMLs) in agricultural soils cause detrimental effects on ecosystem and human health. Therefore, source-specific health risk apportionment is very crucial for the prevention and control of TMLs in agricultural soils. In this study, 149 surface soil samples were taken from a coal mining region in northwest Bangladesh and analyzed for 12 TMLs (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Cu, As, Se, and Hg). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) and absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) receptor models were employed to quantify the pollution sources of soil TMLs. Both models identified five possible sources of pollution: agrochemical practice, industrial emissions, coal-power-plant, geogenic source, and atmospheric deposition, while the contribution rates of each source were calculated as 28.2%, 17.2%, 19.3%, 19% and 16.3% in APCS-MLR, 22.2%, 13.4%, 24.3%, 15.1% and 25.1% in PMF, respectively. Agrochemical practice was the major source of non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) (adults: 32.37%, children: 31.54%), while atmospheric deposition was the highest source of carcinogenic risk (CR) (adults: 48.83%, children: 50.11%). NCR and CR values for adults were slightly higher than for children. However, the trends in NCR and CR between children and adults were similar. As a result, among the sources of pollution, agrochemical practices and atmospheric deposition have been identified as the primary sources of soil TMLs, so prevention and control strategies should be applied primarily for these pollution sources in order to protect human health.

Assessment of land use effect, mapping of human health risks and chemometric analysis of potential toxic elements in topsoils of Aran-o-Bidgol, Iran

This study examines topsoil contamination in Aran-o-Bidgol urban region of central Iran, with a focus on potentially toxic elements (PTEs). A total of 135 topsoil samples in different land types were characterized, ranging from areas with agricultural farms, desert, industrial and residential activity, and brick kilns. The average concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, Co, Fe, Zn, and Mn were 0.72, 11.41, 14.82, 29.87, 51.13, 106.69, 8741.87, 48.59, and 346.42 mg kg-1, respectively, which all exceed the local background levels. The results reveal that land use significantly affected PTE concentrations. Cr, Co, Mn, and Fe concentrations in soils of residential and brick kiln areas were especially high. In contrast, concentrations of Cu, Ni, and Zn were higher in agricultural and residential areas. Risk assessment analysis showed that the sum of toxic units for PTEs for brick kilns (1.72), residential (1.82), and agricultural (1.79) areas exceeded those of other land types and that Ni and Cr contributed the most to the high toxic risk index values. Both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk indices of PTEs in soils were within an acceptable limit, except for the cancer risk of Ni (3.52E-04) and Cr (3.00E-04) among children. The spatial hazard index and carcinogenic health risk of PTEs showed that samples from the southwestern parts of the study area might pose significant health problems to adults and children. This study demonstrates how combining different techniques can help spatially characterize PTE accumulation and protect populations at risk.

Stability of exogenous Cadmium in different vineyard soils and its effect on grape seedlings

Cadmium (Cd) being potentially toxic heavy metal, has become increasingly serious to vineyard soil and grapes in recent years. Soil type is one of the main factors affecting the absorption of Cd in grapes. To investigate the stabilization characteristics and form changes of Cd in different types of vineyard soils, a 90-days incubation experiment was conducted after exogenous Cd addition to 12 vineyard soils from typical vineyards in China. The inhibition of exogenous Cd on grape seedlings was determined based on the pit-pot incubation experiment (200 kg soil per pot). The results demonstrate that Cd concentration in all the sampling sites did not exceed the national screening values (GB15618-2018; i.e., 0.3 mg/kg when pH was lower than 7.5, 0.6 mg/kg when pH was higher than 7.5);. Cd in Fluvo-aquic soil 2, Red soils1, 2, 3 and Grey-Cinnamon soil is dominated by acid-soluble fraction, but was mainly in residual fraction in the remain soils. Throughout the aging process, proportion of the acid-soluble fraction increased and then decreased, while proportion of the residual fraction decreased and then increased, after exogenous Cd was added. The mobility coefficients of Cd in Fluvo-aquic soil 2 and Red soil 1, 2 increased 2.5, 3 and 2 folds, after exogenous Cd addition, respectively. Compared with CK (control), the correlation between total Cd content and its different fractions was relatively weak in the Cdl (low concentration) and Cdh (high concentration) groups. Poor Cd stabilization and strong inhibition of seedling growth rate were observed in Brown soil 1, black soil, red soil 1 and cinnamomic soil. Fluvo-aquic soil 2, 3 and Brown soil 2 showed good Cd stability and small inhibition effect on grape seedlings. These results show that Cd stability in soils and inhibition rate of grape seedlings by Cd are strongly influenced by soil type.

Concentrations and health risk appraisal of heavy metals and volatile organic compounds in soils of automobile mechanic villages in Ogun State, Nigeria

This report presents the findings of the concentrations, distributions and health risks assessment of heavy metals (HMs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in topsoils of two typical automobile mechanic villages (MVs) situated within Ogun State, Nigeria. One of the MVs is located in basement complex terrain (Abeokuta), while the second is in the sedimentary formation (Sagamu). Ten composite samples were collected at depth of 0-30 cm with the aid of soil auger from spent oil-contaminated spots within the two MVs. The chemical parameters of interest were Pb, Cd, benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) as well as oil and grease (O&G). In addition, soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), electrical conductivity (EC) and particle size distribution were also evaluated in order to find out their impacts on assessed soil pollutants. Results revealed that the soils in both MVs are of sandy loam texture, slight acidic to neutral pH, mean CEC < 15 cmol/kg and mean EC > 100 μS/cm. The mean concentration of each of analyzed HMs and VOCs in soils from the two MVs was < 5 mg/kg, while the mean values of TPH and O&G content were > 50 mg/kg. The mean Cd values in soils of both MVs were higher than the national soil screening level of 0.8 mg/kg, but lower than the Canadian and Italian guidelines. There is no significant correlation between each of HMs/VOCs and any of assessed soil physicochemical variables. The non-cancer risk expressed in terms of hazard index (HI) was > 1 via oral ingestion route for adults and children at the two MVs, indicating adverse non-carcinogenic health risk. The HI > 1 value was obtained for adults only through the dermal absorption pathway in Abeokuta MV. However, HI values for the two age groups at the two MVs via inhalation route were < 1, indicating no likelihood of any non-carcinogenic effects via the breathing exposure. The potential of non-cancer risk via oral ingestion route in both MVs was derived from the contributive ratios of HMs and VOCs in the order: Cd > benzene > Pb > toluene. The carcinogenic risk (CR) values due to ingested Cd, benzene and Pb for both age groups at the two MVs exceed the safe limit range of 10-6 to 10-4. Cadmium, benzene and lead made considerable contributions to the estimation of CR through dermal exposure for adults only in Abeokuta MV. The CR values via inhalation pathway for adults and children in both MVs were within the threshold range. Artisans and children should circumvent accidental ingestion of contaminated soils in addition to wearing of protective clothes during routine vehicle maintenance activities.

Oral bioaccessibility of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and related health risk in urban playground soil from a medieval bell metal industrial town Khagra, India

In vitro oral bioaccessibility assay (simple bioaccessibility extraction test) was used to assess bioaccessible PTEs (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, and Zn) in 16 playground soils of Khagra, which is a medieval bell metal industrial town at Murshidabad district, West Bengal, India. The aim was also to establish levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil, their origin, and human health risk, particularly on children. The average pseudo-total PTEs content in playground soil samples was in the decreasing order of Fe (18,988 mg kg-1) > Zn (1229 mg kg-1) > Cu (999 mg kg-1) > Mn (343 mg kg-1) > Pb (181 mg kg-1) > Sn (132 mg kg-1) > Co (8.63 mg kg-1) > As (5.21 mg kg-1) > Cd (0.88 mg kg-1). The pollution indices indicate significant enrichment of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and Sn in the playground. The bioaccessible percentage of PTEs in the 16 playground soils ranged from 0 to 80.25%, where the range of percentage of bioaccessibility was 13.24-62.50, 0-61.46, 16.82-28.79, 5.05-73.06, 0.96-6.14, 2.28-38, and 0-80 for As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, and Zn, respectively. The order of percentage of bioaccessibility was As > Mn > Zn > Sn > Cu > Co > Pb > Cd > Ni > Fe. PCA extracted two major factors indicating the anthropogenic (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Sn) and geogenic (Co, Fe, and Mn) source. Stepwise multiple regression analysis exhibited that the oral bioaccessibility of PTEs did not correlate with physicochemical parameters like pH, EC. In contrast, Sn had a significant correlation with that of organic matter. The health risk for pseudo-total as well as bioavailable fraction in playground soil depicted that children were more vulnerable to ingestion of soil contaminated with PTEs, particularly for Cu and Pb. A risk management plan with the bioaccessible data involving detailed site-specific exposure factors to indicate the importance of the study in terms of child health safety is required.

A new strategy for risk assessment of PM2.5-bound elements by considering the influence of wind regimes

For regulatory purposes, air pollution has been reduced to management of air quality control regions (AQCR), by inventorying pollution sources and identifying the receptors significantly affected. However, beyond being source-dependent, particulate matter can be physically and chemically altered by factors and elements of climate during transport, as they act as local environmental constraints, indirectly modulating the adverse effects of particles on the environment and human health. This case study, at an industrial site in a Brazilian coastal city - Joinville, combines different methodologies to integrate atmospheric dynamics in a strategic risk assessment approach whereby the influence of different wind regimes on environmental and health risks of exposure to PM_2.5-bound elements, are analysed. Although Joinville AQCR has been prone to stagnation/recirculation events, distinctly different horizontal wind circulation patterns indicate two airsheds within the region. The two sampling sites mirrored these two conditions and as a result we report different PM_2.5 mass concentrations, chemical profiles, geo-accumulation, and ecological and human health risks. In addition, feedback mechanisms between the airsheds seem to aggravate the air quality and its effects even under good ventilation conditions. Recognizably, the risks associated with Co, Pb, Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn loadings were extremely high for the environment as well as being the main contributors to elevated non-carcinogenic risks. Meanwhile, higher carcinogenic risks occurred during stagnation/recirculation conditions, with Cr as the major threat. These results highlight the importance of integrating local airshed characteristics into the risk assessment of PM_2.5-bound elements since they can aggravate air pollution leading to different risks at a granular scale. This new approach to risk assessment can be employed in any city's longer-term development plan since it provides public authorities with a strategic perspective on incorporating environmental constraints into urban growth planning and development zoning regulations.

Sedimentation of metals in Sundarban mangrove ecosystem: Dominant drivers and environmental risks

Metal contamination from upstream river water is a threat to coastal and estuarine ecosystem. The present study was undertaken to unveil sedimentation processes and patterns of heavy metal deposition along the salinity gradient of a tropical estuary and its mangrove ecosystem. Sediment columns from three representative sites of differential salinity, anthropogenic interference, and sediment deposition pattern were sampled and analyzed for grain size distribution and metal concentrations as a function of depth. Sediments were dominantly of silty-medium sand texture. A suite of fluvial and alluvial processes, and marine depositional forcing control the sediment deposition and associated heavy metal loading in this estuary. The depth profile revealed a gradual increase in heavy metal accumulation in recent top layer sediments and smaller fractions (silt + clay), irrespective of tidal regimes. Alluvial processes and long tidal retention favor accumulation of heavy metals. Enrichment factor (0.52-15), geo-accumulation index (1.4-5.8), and average pollution load index (PLI = 2.0) indicated moderate to higher heavy metal contamination status of this estuary. This study showed that alluvial processes acted as dominant drivers for the accumulation of metals in sediments, which prevailed over the influence of marine processes. Longer tidal retention of the water column favored more accumulation of heavy metals. Metal accumulation in the sediments entails a potential risk of bioaccumulation and biomagnification through the food web, and may increasingly impact estuarine ecology, economy, and ultimately human health.

An integrated approach for quantifying source apportionment and source-oriented health risk of heavy metals in soils near an old industrial area

Soil contamination of heavy metals (HMs) caused by the long-term industrial activities has become a major environmental issue due to its adverse effects on human health and ecosystem. In this paper, 50 soil samples were analyzed to evaluate the contamination characteristics, source apportionment and source-oriented health risk of HMs in soils near an old industrial area in NE China by applying an integrated approach of Pearson correlation analysis, Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and Monte Carlo simulation. The results showed that the mean concentrations of all HMs greatly exceeded the soil background values (SBV), and the surface soils in the study area were heavily polluted with HMs, displaying a very high ecological risk. The toxic HMs emitted from the bullet production were identified as the primary source of HMs contamination in soils, with a contribution rate of 33.3%. The human health risk assessment (HHRA) suggested that the Hazard quotient (HQ) values of all HMs for children and adults are within the acceptable risk level (HQ < 1). The carcinogenic risk (CR) values of HMs for children and adults significantly exceeded the acceptable threshold of 1E-6 with a basic trend: As > Pb > Cr > Co > Ni, indicating a high cancer risk. For source-oriented health risk, the CR of four pollution sources for children and adults shows a same trend: Factor 4 > Factor 3 > Factor 2 > Factor 1. Among those, the source of HMs pollution from bullet production is the largest contributor to cancer risk, and As and Pb are the most important HMs pollutants that cause cancer risk to humans. The present study sheds some light on the contamination characteristics, source apportionment and source-health risk assessment of HMs in industrially contaminated soils, which helps improve the management of environmental risk control, prevention and remediation.

Mommy, Can I Play Outside? How Urban Design Influences Parental Attitudes on Play

Although play results in physical, social, and cognitive benefits, there is a consensus that children's opportunities to play have been reduced, particularly for those who live in urban environments. What are the barriers to play, and how can we mitigate them? This review examines a critical factor in play opportunities: parents as the decision-makers with regard to children's play. Using perspectives from psychology, urban design, and cognitive science, we analyze the relationships between the design of built environments, parental attitudes and beliefs, and parental decisions on allowing children to play. For example, can a new implementation of children-centered urban design change parents' skeptical attitude toward play? By drawing from global studies, we chart (1) the three key beliefs of parents regarding play and built environments: play should benefit learning, be safe, and match the child's competence and (2) the design principles that can foster these beliefs: learning, social, and progressive challenge designs. By making the link between parents, urban design, and play explicit, this paper aims to inform parents, educators, policymakers, urban planners, and architects on the evidence-based measures for creating and increasing opportunities to play.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Content in Soil and Lycopersicon esculentum (Tomato) and Their Health Implications

In this study, the content of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn) was evaluated in soils and tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) collected from rural areas of Dobrogea province, South-East of Romania. The risk to human health due to the heavy metal exposure via tomato consumption was also assessed.The results suggest that based on the contamination factor, the soils are moderately contaminated with Cd and Mn (Cf values of 1.266. and 1.40) and poorly contaminated with Pb and Cr. The bioconcentration factor (BAF) was below 1 and indicated that the studied species of Lycopersicon esculentum did not accumulate the monitored elements. Person's correlation analysis showed that there were significant relations between soil pH and BCF values of Cd, Pb, Cr and Mn in analysed tomatoes. The estimated daily intake of each metal was below the oral reference dose. The hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were below the acceptable level (< 1), and the cancer risk (CR) for Pb, Cd and Cr was found within acceptable levels (1.0 × 10^-6-1.0 × 10^-4). Based on health guidance values, it may be concluded that the analysed tomatoes do not present health risks to consumers in terms of content and accumulation of heavy metals. It is important to monitor the other toxic metals as well, in order to evaluate the heavy metal accumulation variation and the toxicity value of each metal in agricultural soils from both rural and industrial areas.

Research on Risk Assessment and Contamination Monitoring of Potential Toxic Elements in Mining Soils

Potentially toxic element (PTE) contamination in soils has serious impacts on ecosystems. However, there is no consensus in the field of assessment and monitoring of contaminated sites in China. In this paper, a risk assessment and pollution monitoring method for PTEs was proposed and applied to a mining site containing As, Cd, Sb, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cr, V, Zn, Tl, and Cu. The comprehensive scoring method and analytical hierarchical process were used to screen the priority PTEs for monitoring. The potential ecological risk index method was used to calculate the risk index of monitoring point. The spatial distribution characteristics were determined using semi-variance analysis. The spatial distribution of PTEs was predicted using ordinary kriging (OK) and radial basis function (RBF). The results showed that the spatial distribution of As, Pd, and Cd are mainly influenced by natural factors, while Sb and RI are influenced by both natural and human factors. OK has higher spatial prediction accuracy for Sb and Pb, and RBF has higher prediction accuracy for As, Cd, and RI. The areas with high ecological risk and above are mainly distributed on both sides of the creek and road. The optimized long-term monitoring sites can achieve the monitoring of multiple PTEs.

Ecological and health risk assessment of heavy metals: a case study of residential waste sites in Umuahia, South-East Nigeria

This study assessed the human health hazards and ecological risks of heavy metals from waste sites in residential vicinity. The heavy metals analyzed were Cr, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, and Zn. A total of 40 soil samples were collected from waste sites in two residential estates located in the urban and suburb areas of Umuahia, Abia state. Results revealed a trend in concentrations of the heavy metals for both sites in the following order: Cu > Ni > Zn > Cr > Cd > Pb. The concentrations of heavy metals were higher in rural soils than in urban soil. The contamination factor (CF) indices for Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn were less than 1 for both sites, signifying a low contamination scenario. The contamination factor for Cd (6 > CF) for both sites indicated a very high contamination status. The estimated degree of contamination (Cdeg) was less than the lower threshold of 8.0, denoting a low degree of contamination. Cd was the highest contributor to ecological risk with Er index value of 184.2 among measured heavy metals. The overall potential ecological risk index for urban and rural sites are 187.1 and 196.1 respectively, classifying the sites as moderate risk. The overall non-carcinogenic hazard index values (HI) for adults and children in urban and rural soils are 0.00248, 0.0198 and 0.0028, 0.0223 respectively, which are below the acceptable limit (HI < 1), indicating that the exposed residents are unlikely to experience any apparent adverse health hazards. However, children are more susceptible to non-carcinogenic hazards than adults in the study areas.

The effects of pollution by multiple metals derived from long-term smelting activities on soil mite communities in arable soils under different land use types in East China

Soil pollution represents a threat to soil biodiversity and to soil and human health. However, many ecotoxicological issues, such as the impact of heavy metal pollution on the soil mite community and its spatial distribution in areas with complex environmental factors, are not fully understood. Here, an investigation was conducted in an arable area (about 11 km²) enclosed by surrounding mountains. The study area was contaminated with potentially toxic metals derived from copper smelting that was functioning for over 10 years. The area comprised four land use types: woodlands, dry fields, paddy fields, and wastelands, and was divided into 141 study sites each with an area of 6.25 ha. The soil metal (Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd) contents, pH, and organic matter were determined and their distributions were established. Furthermore, soil mite (Acari) community properties (species richness, individual abundance, and Shannon-Wiener diversity index) were determined, and the distributions of total species number and abundance were ascertained. Soil metal pollution strongly reduced soil mite community, but the effects depended on mite groups or species and their sensitivity to different metals as well as land use types. CANOCO analysis revealed that the order Oribatida was more highly correlated with soil metal contents, whereas the other three orders responded to soil metal contents depending on land use types, mite properties, or metals. SADIE method indicated that the coordinate relationship between mite species number and metal concentration was more negative (4-25% of the study sites) than positive (4-12%). The metal pollution levels in the soil were evaluated by single and integrated pollution and ecological risk indices.

Soil and plant contamination by potentially toxic and emerging elements and the associated human health risk in some Egyptian environments

The aim of this work was to assess the origins, mobility, bioavailability and potential health risks of V, Cr, Co, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Sn and Sb, which are not sufficiently studied in the terrestrial environment of Egypt. This has been carried out by employing a combination of chemical fractionation, plants uptake, mathematical modeling and risk assessment approaches on a wide range of soils and plants sampled from industrial, urban and agricultural locations across Egypt. The contents of As, Cd, Sn and Sb were elevated in the soils of some urban and industrial locations within Cairo, although their soil geo-accumulation (I_geo) indices remained ≤ 2, indicating only moderate contamination. Selenium showed moderate to heavy contamination levels (I_geo up to 4.7) in all sampling locations, and Sb was highly elevated (I_geo = 7.1; extreme contamination) in one industrial location. Therefore, Se was the most important contributor to the pollution load followed by Sb and Cd. Both principle component analysis (of total content) and geochemical fractionation (by sequential extraction) suggested that V, Cr and Co are mostly of geogenic origin, while Se and Sb contents appear to be highly influenced by anthropogenic inputs. The most mobile and bioavailable element was Cd with a large non-residual fraction in all soils (76% of total Cd). The bio-concentration factors of Cd in leafy and fruiting plants were 50 times larger than other elements (except Mo) indicating preferential systematic plant uptake of Cd. Risk assessment models showed an overall low noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks to the population of Egypt due to the studied elements with only a few anomalies.

Trace element speciation in sludge: a preliminary study to assess contamination levels in the sewage network

The spreading of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants and various industries arouses the growing interest due to the contamination by trace elements. Sludges were collected from one sewage treatment plant and two industries in Dhaka City, Bangladesh to assess physicochemical parameters and total and fraction content of trace elements like Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, Pb, Fe, Mn and Zn in sludges. We evaluated the bioavailability of theses metals by determining their speciation by sequential extraction, each metal being distributed among five fractions: exchangeable fraction, bound to carbonate fraction, Fe-Mn oxide bound fraction, organic matter bound fraction and residual fractions. We found that all the analyzed sludges had satisfactory properties from an agronomic quality point of view. The average concentration (mg/kg) of trace metals in sludge samples were in the following decreasing order Fe (12807) > Cr (200) > Mn (158) > Zn (132) > Cu (68.2) > Ni (42.5) > Pb (36.4) > As (35.1) > Cd (3.7). The results of the sequential extraction showed that Cr, Ni, Cu, Fe and Mn were largely associated with the residual fraction where As, Cd and Pb was dominantly associated with the exchangeable and carbonate bound fractions and Zn showed a considerable proportion in carbonate bound fraction. These results showed that regulations must take into account the bioavailability with regard to the characteristics of the agricultural soils on which sludge will be spread.

Impact of old environmental burden in the Spiš region (Slovakia) on soil and home-grown vegetable contamination, and health effects of heavy metals

Due to several centuries of ongoing mining activities, Middle Spiš (Slovakia) is one of the areas with a damaged environment. The contents of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Hg were determined in the soils and home-grown vegetables (potatoes, carrots, tomatoes). Except for Pb, the contents of heavy metals in the soils of some plots were higher than the limit values. Based on the values of Contamination factor (C_f), Degree of contamination (C_deg), Geo-accumulation index (I_geo), and Pollution load index (PLI), very high Fe, Cd, and Hg contamination (C_f ≥ 6), very high soil contamination (C_deg ≥ 20), extremely heavy Fe and Hg contamination (I_geo > 5), resp. moderately pollution to non-pollution (1 < PLI ≤ 2) was found in all plots. In vegetable samples, the maximum levels were exceeded for Cu, Pb, Hg (potato), Pb (carrot, tomato), and Hg (carrot, plot E). Bioaccumulation factor values BAF > 1 were for Cu (carrots, potatoes). Estimated daily intake values for all heavy metals were lower than their tolerable daily intake. Chronic daily intake of heavy metals ranged 2.495E−06 (Hg)—0.1416 (Fe) mg/kg/day. Based on Hazard index values, potato consumption poses a risk (0.8068–1.3057). The results showed that the monitoring of soils and cultivated production is necessary for the investigated area.

Pollution and Risk Assessments of Heavy Metal(loid)s in the Soil around Lead-Zinc Smelteries via Data Integration Analysis

Pb-Zn smelting is a major cause of heavy metal(loid) contaminations in soils. We collected data on heavy metal(loid)s in the soils near Pb-Zn smelteries globally from 54 peer-reviewed reports to study the metals' distribution, pollution index, and potential ecological and health risks. We observed that 90% of the studied Pb-Zn smelteries were distributed in Asia and Europe. Heavy metal(loid)s were mainly deposited within a 2 km distance to the smelteries, with mean concentrations (mg/kg) of 208.3 for As, 26.6 for Cd, 191.8 for Cu, 4192.6 for Pb, and 4187.7 for Zn, respectively. Cd and Pb concentrations in the soil exceeded their corresponding upper continental crust values several hundred folds, suggesting severe contamination. The smelting area had the highest heavy metal(loid) contamination in soil, followed by the forest land, farmland, and living area. Compared with the soil environmental standard values from various countries, As, Cd, Pb, and Zn were considered priority pollutants for protecting the ecosystem and human health. Likewise, As, Cd, and Pb were suggested as the priority pollutants for protecting groundwater safety. The potential ecological and health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in the soil within 2 km of Pb-Zn smelteries were severe and should be of concern.

Environmental impact and health risk assessment of potentially toxic metals emanating from different anthropogenic activities related to E-wastes

The global desire for modernization through technology has thrown up a major disposal challenge for e-wastes, especially in low-economic countries. This study assessed the environmental impacts and possible health risks of potentially toxic metals emanating from poorly managed e-wastes across three main representative sites in southwest Nigeria. Soil samples were collected from three major cities in Southwestern Nigeria and analyzed for As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni and Zn. Pollution assessments were done using indices including contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI) and potential ecological risk index (PERI) coupled with evaluation of non-cancer and cancer health risks. Results showed enrichment of the local soil with metals due to e-wastes related activities, with an elevated level of Cf (>6), revealing that the soils around the e-waste dumpsites were severely contaminated. In addition, the assessment of individual metal potential ecological risk index (Ei f) showed a high level of potential ecological risk for Cd (Ei f >320) at all the sites while As, Pb, Cu and Ni exhibited high ecological risk at the sites, especially at topsoil layer. Furthermore, the study established varying potentials for carcinogenic health risks for residents around the dumpsites, such that while a negligible risk index occurred for Cd and Ni (RI < 10-6), the risk is tolerable for Pb (0-6 < RI < 10-4) but within cancer-development range for As and Cr (RI > 10-4). The study concluded that poorly managed e-wastes in the area poses significant threats to the health of humans and the entire ecosystem. Further study is recommended to identify similar e-waste dumpsites at regional and national - scales for sustainable restoration and improved e-waste management.

Potentially toxic elements in weathered waste-rocks of Fushun western opencast mine: distribution, source identification, and contamination assessment

To understand the current status of the contamination of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) after closing the Fushun Western Opencast Mine, this study has focused on the concentration, contamination assessment, and source identification of eight PTEs in weathered waste-rocks in four distinct areas of the mine. The mean concentrations of Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg, Cd, and As were 79.4, 86.3, 126, 64.8, 16.9, 1.04, 1.94, and 6.27 mg kg^-1, respectively. The results demonstrated that Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg, Cd, and As were contaminated to different extents in different weathered waste-rocks and waste-rocks, among which there was considerable Cd contamination. Coal gangue area (CGA) exhibited the most polluted weathered waste-rocks, which can be attributed to severe pollution and moderate ecological hazards. Self-combustion gangue (SCG) contamination of waste-rocks was considerably serious and caused severe pollution and considerable ecological harm. Health risk assessments demonstrated that Hg had the highest non-carcinogenic risk. Ingestion of PTEs was found to be a primary route of exposure, while dermal and inhalation exposure was negligible. Principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that there were roughly three sources of PTEs in the weathered waste-rocks of the mine, natural sources related to the weathering of parent rocks, and human sources, including industrial emissions, mining activities, and atmospheric dust deposition and resuspension. This study advances our knowledge of PTEs in mines and provides policymakers with a reference for designing strategies to protect mine-based ecosystems.

Ecological Health Risk Assessment and Source Identification of Heavy Metals in Surface Soil Based on a High Geochemical Background: A Case Study in Southwest China

A total of 28,095 surface soil samples were collected in areas with high natural background levels; the potential ecological risk is generally low, and the high-risk area is small and mainly affected by lead−zinc mines. The contribution to the potential ecological risk factor (RI) is as follows: Hg > Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cr > Zn, with noncarcinogenic chronic risks of Cr > As > Cd > Pb > Ni > Cu > Hg > Zn; furthermore, dermal contact is the main pathway of exposure causing health risks. The total carcinogenic risks caused by heavy metals were as follows: Cr > Cd > As > Pb; and the risks posed by Cr, Cd, and As were higher than the threshold value (1.0 × 10−4); people face a higher threat to heavy metals in soils in Zhenxiong, Ludian, Huize, Weixin, and Zhaoyang. The evaluation result of the EPA PMF model shows that the soil heavy metals are mainly composed of five sources, of which basalt, Permian, and Triassic carbonate rock parent material constitute the natural background source, while the mining activities of lead−zinc mines and the emissions of coal burning by residents constitute the anthropogenic source. The contribution was ranked in order of lead−zinc mining (26.7%) > Triassic carbonate (23.7%) > basalt (20.9%) > coal burning and automobile emissions (16.1%) > Permian carbonate (12.6%).

Heavy metal impression in surface sediments and factors governing the fate of macrobenthic communties in tropical estuarine ecosystem, India

The present study aims to investigate the contamination of heavy metals in the sediments of a tropical ecosystem, India, and to evaluate the factors responsible for the dominance of specific macrobenthic communities, particularly in estuarine sediments. For the analysis of Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb and Cd in sediments, acid digestion and subsequent quantification by microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy was performed, whereas for Hg determination, cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used. The general trend of the heavy metal concentration was observed as Cr > Cu > Zn > Ni > Pb > Cd > Hg, regardless of any seasonal alteration. The estuarine region was considerably contaminated by Cu and Cr (C.F. > 2) irrespective of any seasonal difference, and by Cd in 2017 non-monsoon (CF > 3). Heavy metal contamination was most pronounced during the monsoon (2018). Estuarine and marine zone together considered as deteriorated zone especially during monsoon seasons (PLI > 1, 2018 monsoon) while riverine zone remained poorly contaminated (PLI < 1). Clay Loam/Clay/Heavy Clay textures preferred polychaetes and bivalves in the estuarine and marine zone as compared to other macrobenthic communities (OMC). Among the hydrochemical parameters, total dissolved solids in general and euryhaline and slightly alkaline pH preferred domination of bivalves followed by polychaetes in non-monsoon seasons. The trace metal contamination in estuarine sediments increases the concern of bioaccumulation tendency of dominant bivalves of the estuarine and coastal sediments.

Nanoparticles as a potential protective agent for arsenic toxicity alleviation in plants

Aggrandized technological and industrial progression in past decades have occasioned immense depreciation in the quality of environment and ecosystem, majorly due to augmentation in the number of obnoxious pollutants incessantly being released in soil, water or air. Arsenic (As) is one such hazardous metalloid contaminating the environment which has the potential to detrimentally affect the life on earth. Even in minute quantity, As is known to cause various critical diseases in humans and toxicity in plants. Recent studies on nanoparticles (NPs) approve of their ability to qualify the criterion of becoming a potent tool for mitigating As-induced phytotoxicity. Nanoparticles are reported to promote plant growth under As-stress by stimulating various alterations at physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. In this review, we provide an up-to-date compilation of research that has been carried out in comprehending the mechanisms utilized by nanoparticles including controlled As uptake and distribution in plants, maintenance of ROS homeostasis during stress and chelation and vacuolar sequestration of As so as to reduce the severity of toxicity induced by As, and potential areas of research in this field will also be indicated for future perspectives.

A global perspective of the current state of heavy metal contamination in road dust

Heavy metals are persistent and bio-accumulative, and pose potential risk to human health and ecosystem. We reviewed the current state of heavy metal contamination, the ecotoxicological and human health risk of heavy metals reported in urban road dust from various cities in different continents (Asia, Europe, Africa, America, and Australia). We compared and synthesized the findings on the methods related to sample collection, extraction, analytical tools of heavy metals, their concentrations, level of contamination, ecological risk, non-carcinogenic risk, and carcinogenic risk in road dust. Concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cd, Cr, Mn, and Fe were found to be higher than their background values in soil. As expected, the contamination levels of the heavy metals varied extensively among cities, countries, continents, and periods. A high level of contamination is observed for Pb and Cd in road dust due to operating leaded gasoline and the old vehicle population. The highest Zn contamination was observed from road dust in Europe, followed by Asia, Africa, Australia, and America (North America and South America). Cu contamination and the pollution load index (PLI) is found to be the highest in Europe and lowest in Africa, with in-between values of PLI in American and African cities. The potential ecological risk on different continents was observed highest in Asia, followed by Europe, Australia, America, and Africa. A comparative assessment of non-carcinogenic risk for children indicated that Australia is the most susceptible country due to high heavy metal exposure in road dust, followed by Asia. However, there is no susceptible risk in European, African, and American cities. We did not observe any potential risk to adults due to non-carcinogenic metals. Carcinogenic risk to all age groups was within the threshold limit range for all the regions worldwide.

Health risk estimations and geospatial mapping of trace metals in soil samples around automobile mechanic workshops in Benin city, Nigeria

This study was carried out to assess the distribution of trace metals in soil samples from selected automobile mechanic workshops (AMWs) in Benin City, spatially map the concentrations and estimate the health risk indices for the exposed populace. Topsoil samples were collected from twenty-one (21) AMWs in Benin City in 3 composites for three months at each station. Soil samples were analyzed for heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Fe, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Zn) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The non-carcinogenic risks caused by exposure to the metals were insignificant, characterized by in mean values of hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) below one (1) in adults and children. Carcinogenic risk (CR) occurred only in the children exposed to nickel through ingestion; attributable to ingestion. In adults and children, the risks associated with the uptake routes were in the order of ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The hazard index (HI) values of heavy metals for children and adults decreased in the order of Pb > Cr > Cd > Cu > Zn > Ni and were all lower than one (1), which indicated that the children and adults were not at non-carcinogenic risk. The contamination factors (CF) of all metals analyzed were lower than one (1), suggesting low contamination. The average CF decreased in the order of Pb (0.3715) > Zn (0.14) > Cu (0.087) > Cr (0.013) > Ni (0.01) > Fe (0.0007). Potential ecological risks of the trace metals in soils of these workshops revealed low pollution of the soils by the metals. Results indicated that the three routes of uptake in adults and children decreased in the order of ingestion > dermal > inhalation. The non-carcinogenic risks posed by metals to the children and adults were insignificant. Ingested nickel however posed potential carcinogenic risk to only the children. The toxicodynamics of heavy metals in the soil profile demonstrated in this study could be a vital information for future studies and decisions on the management of the health and environment of the study area.

Distribution of heavy metals in surface soil near a coal power production unit: potential risk to ecology and human health

Coal thermal power plants are the dominant factor in producing various hazardous elements in surrounding surface soil, resulting in a significant human health hazard. In the current study, the seasonal (pre- and post-monsoon) concentration of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn in surface soil around coal power production unit was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The possible health risks throughout multiple exposure routes, i.e., ingestion, dermal, and inhalation were estimated for adult and children. Furthermore, geo-accumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), pollution factor (CF), ecological risk index, and pollution load index (PLI) were applied to interpret the environmental pollution in the study area. The geospatial distribution pattern was computed to understand the trace and hazardous element distribution in the surface soil. As a result, the concentration of Fe (mg/kg) in pre-monsoon (15,620) and post-monsoon (27,180), Ni (mg/kg) in pre-monsoon (19.8), and post-monsoon (81.7) was found above the standard limits of soil prescribed by the WHO and FAO. Enrichment factor was observed between 0.95-6948 (pre-monsoon) and 0.53-116.09 (post-monsoon). The ecological risk index was found moderate to considerable for As and Cd metals during both seasons. In addition, the average PLI value was observed high for both seasons indicating the contamination of the study area with heavy metals. Moreover, Igeo values for Fe, Mg, and As were found relatively high. Conversely, health risks to the human population were found within the USEPA acceptable limits.

Does environmental risk really change in abandoned mining areas in the medium term when no control measures are taken?

Studies regarding how environmental risk evolves in abandoned mining areas in the medium term have been seldom carried out. The answer to this question is not obvious despite it is essential in order to evaluate the need to take urgent control measures in these areas. Fifty-two samples corresponding to soils (from natural pasture and arable lands) and mine tailings were collected in the surroundings of an old Spanish Pb/Zn mine (San Quintín, Central Spain). Current concentrations of pseudo-total and available metal (loid)s (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, As and Ag) were determined and the environmental risk assessment (ERA) was conducted with these data and those corresponding to a sampling previously carried out in 2006. ERA was carried out by calculating the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), the pollution load index (PLI) and the potential ecological risk index (PER). Results demonstrated that Pb and Zn concentrations have increased in the soils of the plots surrounding the mining areas causing a moderate rise in most of the determined pollution indices between 2006 and 2020. It was especially significant in the pastureland areas, with increases up to 17% in the number of soil samples that reached the highest risk classification in 2020 as compared to those taken in 2006. The results obtained here demonstrate that the environmental risk can actually increase in a continuous way in abandoned mining areas despite the closure of the mining operation and the effect of the possible natural attenuation.

A synthetic health risk assessment based on geochemical equilibrium simulation and grid spatial interpolation for zinc (II) species

Soil heavy metal pollution has become a global issue involving environmental safety and human health risks. This paper quantified the sources of heavy metals by positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and explored the spatial distribution of heavy metals by means of grid scales, with an industrial site as the study area in Suzhou. The PMF identified four pollution sources of heavy metal in soil, and the quantitative results revealed that industrial activities (33.5%) contributed the most to heavy metals, followed by soil parent materials (30.8%) and agricultural activities (19.7%). Zinc (Zn) was screened out as the targeted metal (TM) through the potential ecological risk assessment, the metal species of which was simulated by the geochemical software PHREEQC. This research aimed to determine the dominant metal species of TM with high-risk levels to realize the transformation of toxic metal species. Herein, according to the morphological evolution of metal species, the activity and concentration of the Zn ion species were obtained for both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk assessment. The evaluation of the optimized human health risk demonstrated that the associated health risk of Zn (II) ions depended predominantly on its metal speciation. Overall, the optimized carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk value of Zn₂S₃^2- for adults was 2.01E-04 and for children was 1.31, resulting in corresponding hazardous risk to humans, which accounted for high-risk levels of 61.5% and 58.5% for adults and children, respectively. The OHRA method can provide a reference for the decision-making of soil heavy metal pollution and remediation for specific heavy metals in polluted areas.

Assessment of role of rhizosphere process in bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fine nutritive roots of riparian mangrove species in river Hooghly: Implications to global anthropogenic environmental changes

Biota of coastal estuarine habitats of tropics and subtropics are extremely vulnerable. In the study, we have investigated the role of rhizosphere process in bio-accumulation of heavy metals in fine nutritive roots of riparian mangroves at eleven sampling locations of river Hooghly. The rhizospheric sediment of river Hooghly was accumulating HMs due to the presence of organic content and anthropogenic inputs. The mean EF (2.03-8.3), Igeo (-2.27-0.71), and CF (0.62-2.53) values signifies the enrichment of HMs in sediment fine fraction (<62.5 μm) whereas, the mean PLI (0.83 to 1.18) indicates gradual environmental degradation of river Hooghly. Low BCF observed in the river Hooghly might be due to barrier to hypodermal structures and/or any prevailing mechanism of saturation of HMs. However, BCF > 1 for Al, Cu, Cr, Mn, and Zn, signifies the phyto-remediation potential of riparian mangroves to mitigate amplified global anthropogenic environmental changes.

Assessments of the Ecological and Health Risks of Potentially Toxic Metals in the Topsoils of Different Land Uses: A Case Study in Peninsular Malaysia

This study reported the ecological risks and human health risk assessments of five potentially toxic metals in the topsoils of six land uses in Peninsular Malaysia. It was found that industry, landfill, rubbish heap, and mining areas were categorized as “very high ecological risk”. The land uses of industry, landfill and rubbish heap were found to have higher hazard quotient values for the three pathways of the five metals for children and adults, when compared to the mining, plantation, and residential areas. The values for both the non-carcinogenic (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn), and carcinogenic risks for inhalation (Cd and Ni) obtained for children and adults in this study showed no harmful health effects on their health. However, of public concern, the hazard index, for Pb of children at the landfill and the rubbish heap showed non-carcinogenic risk for children. Therefore, children need to be taken care from public standpoint. They should be advised not to play in the topsoils near industry, landfill and rubbish heap areas. The present findings are important for the environmental management of potentially toxic metals especially in the land uses of industry, landfill and rubbish heap in Peninsular Malaysia.

Abstract

Human activities due to different land uses are being studied widely in many countries. This study aimed to determine the ecological risks and human health risk assessments (HHRA) of Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Zn in the topsoils of six land uses in Peninsular Malaysia. The ranges of the potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in the soils (mg/kg, dry weight) of this study were 0.24–12.43 for Cd (mean: 1.94), 4.66–2363 for Cu (mean: 228), 2576–116,344 for Fe (mean: 32,618), 2.38–75.67 for Ni (mean: 16.04), 7.22–969 for Pb (mean: 115) and 11.03–3820 for Zn (mean: 512). For the ecological risk assessments, the potential ecological risk index (PERI) for single metals indicated that the severity of pollution of the five metals decreased in the following sequence: Cd > Cu > Pb > Zn > Ni. It was found that industry, landfill, rubbish heap, and mining areas were categorized as “very high ecological risk”. For HHRA, the land uses of industry, landfill and rubbish heap were found to have higher hazard quotient (HQ) values for the three pathways (with the order: ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation ingestion) of the five metals for children and adults, when compared to the mining, plantation, and residential areas. The values for both the non-carcinogenic (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn), and carcinogenic risks (CR) for inhalation (Cd and Ni) obtained for children and adults in this study showed no serious adverse health impacts on their health. However, of public concern, the hazard index (HI), for Pb of children at the landfill (L-3) and the rubbish heap (RH-3) sites exceeded 1.0, indicating non-carcinogenic risk (NCR) for children. Therefore, these PERI and HHRA results provided fundamental data for PTMs pollution mitigation and environmental management in areas of different land uses in Peninsular Malaysia.

Understanding potentially toxic metal (PTM) induced biotic response in two riparian mangrove species Sonneratia caseolaris and Avicennia officinalis along river Hooghly, India: Implications for sustainable sediment quality management

Elevated human-induced activities have prompted significant uncontrolled release of potentially toxic metals (PTM) to the undisturbed ecosystem throughout the globe. Riparian mangrove vegetations act as a natural purifier of wastewaters and assist in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. We have investigated the elevated PTM-induced stress and biotic response of two riparian mangrove species e.g. Sonneratia caseolaris and Avicennia officinalis by river Hooghly. The increased PTM concentrations were observed throughout the river bank; with the maximum pollution load at Chemaguri (S9). Except Co, Cr and Pb, higher enrichment factor (1.97-8.89) and contamination factor (0.64-2.88) values were observed for Cd, Cu, Fe, Zn. Mn, and Ni. Geo-accumulation index (-2.2 - 0.92) values indicates natural geogenic accumulation of Cu in the riparian mangrove sediment. Thus, sediment quality indices suggest except Cu, enrichment of all studied PTMs was sourced from anthropogenic activities. The sediment of the region when compared with consensus-based sediment quality guidelines shows considerable ecotoxicological risks and threat towards human health considering Ni accumulation. The highest potential ecological risk index value was observed in Chemaguri (S9). The biotic response of riparian mangroves was characterized by reduced photosyhthetic pigments (Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll b) and increased activity of antioxidative stress enzymes (POD, CAT and SOD). Significant statistical relationship between antioxidative enzyme activity, photosynthetic pigments and bioaccumulated PTMs reflects active functioning of detoxification mechanism in the riparian mangrove species.

The mussel caging approach in the assessment of trace metal contamination in southern Mediterranean coastal waters: a multi-biomarker study

In the framework of the biomonitoring programme of the Gulf of Annaba (north-eastern Algeria), this study aims to assess the health status of the Gulf by transplanting the brown mussel Perna perna (Linnaeus 1758) for 12 weeks (June 2017-August 2017) at three sites. The concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) and as well as a battery of enzymatic and non-enzymatic biomarkers were measured in mussels before and after the transplantation period. Furthermore, analysis of trace metals was performed on the surface layer of the sediment of all the sites. A significant increase in the Cu and Pb concentrations in the mussel dry tissues was observed after the transplantation period and followed the order of metal contamination of the surface layer sediments, indicating a relationship between the bioaccumulation of metals and their bioavailability at each site. Unlike those of Cu and Pb, Cd and Zn concentrations did not reach significant levels of bioaccumulation at any of the three study sites. The biomarker response results were complementary to the measured metal concentrations in the mussel tissues and were associated with the metal accumulation index. Metal bioaccumulation in mussels and supporting biomarker response results identified the most important pollution point sources in the area.

Heavy metals concentrations and naturally occurring radionuclides in soils affected by and around a solid waste dumpsite in Osogbo metropolis, Nigeria

The presence of heavy metals and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) in high concentrations in soils can be hazardous to exposed humans. This study is aimed at measuring the concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cd, Co, and Cr) and activity concentration of ²³²Th, ²³⁸U, and ⁴⁰K in soils affected by and around a solid waste dumpsite in Osogbo metropolis, Nigeria. Atomic absorption spectrometry and gamma-ray spectrometric techniques were used to determine the concentrations of metals and NORMs, respectively. Possible environmental impact of the heavy metal content and the probable radiological hazard by the NORMs to the general public were assessed. The calculated pollution indices reported in this work for Co, Cr, Pb, and Ni show low pollution status. Geoaccumulation indices for Cu, Zn, and Cd indicated that the area under study is strongly contaminated by these metals. Evaluated ecological risk index narrowed down Cd as the poisonous metal with high concentration. The measured radionuclides' mean activity concentrations and the evaluated mean of radium equivalent and absorbed dose rate values are higher than the recommended safe limit, an indication of possible radiological hazard. The principal factor analysis results explained 76% of the collection of data and described chips of galvanized/chrome metals, scrap metals, waste from electronics, Cr, and Cd-containing waste as sources of the heavy metals. The practice of land cultivation around the dumpsite should be deterred to prevent the transportation of these vicious heavy metals into the food chain.

Mercury in Macrolepiota procera (Scop.) Singer and Its Underlying Substrate-Environmental and Health Risks Assessment

Wild-growing edible mushrooms are valuable food with a high content of proteins, fibers, antioxidants, and they are characterized by their specific taste and flavor. However, from an ecotoxicological point of view, they are a risk commodity because of their extremely high bioaccumulative capacity to accumulate the risk elements and contaminants from the environment. In the present study, we examined mercury (Hg) contamination in 230 fruiting bodies of Macrolepiota procera (Scop.) Singer and 230 soil/substrate samples, which were collected in foraging seasons 2015-2019 from 22 different locations in Slovakia. Total mercury content was determined by cold-vapor AAS analyzer AMA 254. The level of contamination and environmental risks were assessed by contamination factor (Cf), index of geoaccumulation (Igeo), and potential environmental risk index (PER). Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was calculated for individual anatomical parts of M. procera. Mercury content in the soil/substrate samples varied between 0.02 and 0.89 mg kg-1 DW, and in mushroom samples between 0.03 and 2.83 mg kg-1 DW (stems), and between 0.04 and 6.29 mg kg-1 DW (caps). The obtained results were compared with the provisional tolerable weekly intake for Hg defined by WHO to determine a health risk resulting from regular and long-term consumption of M. procera.

Environmental Impact of Potentially Toxic Elements on Tropical Soils Used for Large-Scale Crop Commodities in the Eastern Amazon, Brazil

The Amazon soils demand high rates of fertilizer application to express high agricultural potential, making it necessary to carry out frequent monitoring of ecological functions and biogeochemical processes in this important biome. The concentrations of As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn and contamination indexes were studied in Oxisol and Ultisols cultivated with citrus (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) and black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), at 26, 10 and 5 years of implantation, respectively. The potential risk of contamination was estimated by the enrichment (EF) and bioaccumulation (BAF) factors. Moderate enrichment of Ba, Pb and Zn (2 < EF < 5) and significant enrichment of As and Cu (5 < EF < 20) were observed. In addition, the following orders of bioaccumulation were found: oil palm—Cu > Zn > Hg > Ni > Ba > Co > As > Cr > Cd ≈ Pb; black pepper—Zn > Hg > Cu > Ba > Ni > Co > Pb >> As > Cr > Cd; and citrus—Hg > Ni > Ba > Zn > Co > Cu > As > Pb >> Cr > Cd. However, all elements are in concentrations below the prevention and investigation values established by Brazilian legislation, that is, the management practices in the crops studied are not contributing with damage to soil and human health risks.

Long Term Application of Fertilizers in Eastern Amazon and Effect on Uranium and Thorium Levels in Soils

In recent years, the use of fertilizers has increased in the Amazon. Phosphate fertilizers, which are commonly used, can present high concentrations of radioelements. In the present study, the activity concentrations of uranium (U) and thorium (Th) in Oxisols and Ultisols cultivated with citrus (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck), oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) and black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), with 26, 10 and 5 years of implantation, respectively, were evaluated. The potential risk of contamination was estimated by the enrichment (EF) and bioaccumulation (BAF) factors. Pearson’s correlation coefficients indicated a significant relationship between the concentrations of U and Th in soil and plant and the soil properties pH, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and P. The enrichment (EF < 2) and bioaccumulation (0.01 < BAF < 0.05) factors were low. In plant tissues, the concentrations of 238U followed the order: citrus > black pepper > oil palm, and the concentrations of 232Th followed the sequence: black pepper >> citrus > oil palm. The activity concentrations of 238U and 232Th in the soil cultivated with black pepper, as well as in the soil of the reference area close to the citrus plantation, were higher than the world average values of 35 and 30 Bq kg−1, respectively, established by the United Nations Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation. Perennial crops that are fertilized annually must be monitored by environmental agencies due the accumulation of elements that can promote potential risks to human health.

Heavy Metals Presence in the Soil and Their Content in Selected Varieties of Chili Peppers in Slovakia

Capsicum chili peppers are popular vegetables in Slovakia. They provide a supply of health-promoting substances, but contaminated vegetables can pose a serious health risk to the people who consume them. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the content of heavy metals (Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb and Hg) in the soil as well as in selected varieties of the genus Capsicum grown in southern Slovakia. The results were compared with the limit values given by the Law no. 220/2004 (valid in the SR) as well as threshold values proposed by the European Commission (EC) (2006). The gained result showed that the total content of Cd (1.64 mg/kg) as well as the available mobile forms of Cd (0.12 mg/kg) and Pb (0.26 mg/kg) was exceeded on the soil on which Capsicum cultivars were grown. The limit values of other monitored heavy metals (Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Hg) were not exceeded. The studied species of the genus Capsicum did not accumulate monitored heavy metals. It can be stated that consumption of chili peppers does not pose any risk for human health.

Hygienic quality of soil in the Gemer region (Slovakia) and the impact of risk elements contamination on cultivated agricultural products

The Gemer region (Slovakia) belongs to areas with a high concentration of risk elements. The contents of Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Hg and Mn were determined in soils and cultivated agricultural production from lands in three cadastres of the Gemer region (Henckovce (48.713845, 20.426189) and Nižná Slaná (48.717373, 20.4208423), cultivated crop—spring triticale; Gemerská Poloma (48.704523, 20.487645), cultivated crop—maize). Bioavailable forms of Pb (0.306–0.532 mg/kg) and Cd (0.104–0.154 mg/kg), pseudototal forms of Cd (3.07–3.98 mg/kg) and Hg (0.484–2.18 mg/kg) represented the highest risk in soils. The highest contents of Pb (Cd, Hg) were in maize from Gemerská Poloma: 0.898 (0.081, 0.399) mg/kg DM. Soils were classified based on several indicators of soil contamination. The highest values of indicators are: Contamination factor (C_f 29.1—Hg), Degree of contamination (C_deg 51.5), Potential ecological risk factor (E_r 1163—Hg), Potential ecological risk index (RI 1,520), Pollution load index (PLI 4.76), Geo-accumulation index (I_geo 5.60—Hg). All indicators concerned the lands of Henckovce and Gemerská Poloma, RI also concerned the land of Nižná Slaná. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was calculated to assess the plant's ability to absorb the risk element. For both crops and all risk elements, BAF values were < 1. Obtained results indicate heavy metal contamination of soils, therefore monitoring of soils in investigated area is necessary.

Fractionation of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in Urban Soils from Salzburg, Thessaloniki and Belgrade: An Insight into Source Identification and Human Health Risk Assessment

Concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were measured in topsoil samples collected from parks in the cities of Salzburg (Austria), Thessaloniki (Greece), and Belgrade (Serbia) in order to assess the distribution of PTEs in the urban environment, discriminate natural (lithogenic) and anthropogenic contributions, identify possible sources of pollution, and compare levels of pollution between the cities. An assessment of the health risks caused by exposure to PTEs through different pathways was also conducted. The study revealed that, with the exception of Pb in Salzburg, levels of PTEs in the soils in polluted urban parks were higher than in unpolluted ones, but still lower than those recorded in other European soils. Results of sequential analyses showed that Al, Cr, and Ni were found in residual phases, proving their predominantly lithogenic origin and their low mobility. In contrast, the influence of anthropogenic factors on Cu, Pb, and Zn was evident. Site-dependent variations showed that the highest concentrations of As, Cu, Pb, and Zn of anthropogenic origin were recorded in Salzburg, while the highest levels of Al, Cr, and Ni of lithogenic origin were recorded in Belgrade and Thessaloniki, which reflects the specificity of the geological substrates. Results obtained for the health risk assessment showed that no human health risk was found for either children or adults.
