Heavy Metals in Common Fishes Consumed in Dhaka, a Megacity of Asia: A Probabilistic Carcinogenic and Non-Carcinogenic Health Hazard

Heavy metal contamination of fish is a serious public health concern worldwide, including in Bangladesh. In this study, six commonly consumed fish species namely Hilsha (Tenualosa ilisha), Kachki (Corica soborna), Punti (Puntitus ticto), Taki (Channa punctatus), Meni (Nandus nandus), and Tengra (Mystus tengara) were analyzed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni), by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The fish samples were collected from wholesale markets in Dhaka city, the main business hub of Bangladesh where the fishes converged from countrywide and are redistributed to the whole city. The metal concentration varied among the studied fish species. Hilsha, the national fish of Bangladesh, contained the highest As among the other fishes of this study, whereas Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Ni were the highest in Kachki, and Pb and Cr were the highest in Tengra. The probable source of metal accumulation in the fish species may be the river or marine water that can be contaminated by industrial waste, pesticide, and/or fertilizer use in agriculture and/or commercial fish feeds. All analyzed fish species showed serious heavy metal pollution, having high average pollution load index (APLI) values (> 1). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values for the metals were lower than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). The hazard index (HI) for all the fish species was above 1 for adults, showing non-carcinogenic health risks. The target carcinogenic risk (TCR) values were below the acceptable limit (10-4) for most of the metals, indicating safe for consumption with respect to the risk of cancer.

Spatiotemporal distribution of microplastic debris in the surface beach sediment of the southeastern coast of Bangladesh

This study undertakes a spatiotemporal analysis of microplastic pollution in surface beach sediments, covering 7 coastal beaches in Bangladesh and two seasons-monsoon and winter. The concentration of microplastics extracted from the surface beach sediment is 242.86 particles/kg dw. The results showed both significant seasonal (p value = 0.001) and spatial (p value = 0.004) variation. The abundance and polymer types were significantly higher (57 %) in winter than in the monsoon season (43 %). Touristic and commercial beaches showed higher levels of microplastic pollution than the non-touristic beaches. Polyethylene (28.8 %) and Polypropylene (27.6 %) were the most abundant polymer. The most dominant coloration of microplastics was white (42.6 %). The majority of the microplastics were fibers (33.5 %). Smallest particles measuring <1 mm constituted nearly half of the total microplastics load (48.5 %). This baseline data can be useful in terms of coastal zone management for the southeastern coastal beaches of Bangladesh.

The pervasiveness of microplastic contamination in the gastrointestinal tract of fish from the western coast of Bangladesh

This study investigated the prevalence of microplastics (MPs) in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of fish from the western coast of Bangladesh, the world's largest mangrove ecosystem. Altogether, 8 different species of fish (5 demersal and 3 pelagic) were examined. Microplastics were detected in every individual fish with an average abundance of 7.1 ± 3.14 particles per specimen. The demersal species were observed to consume more microplastics (7.78 ± 3.51) than the pelagic species (5.92 ± 2.06). Moreover, small-sized fish was found to accumulate higher MPs/body weight than large-sized fish. Polypropylene was the most abundant polymer type (45 %) and fiber was the most prevalent shape (71 %). SEM analysis revealed cracks, pits, and foreign particles on the microplastics' surface, representing their ability to bear organic pollutants and heavy metals. This study will be a source of information for future research and a guide for policy-makers to take better actions to protect and restore marine resources.

Distribution and source apportionment of toxic and trace elements in some benthic and pelagic coastal fish species in Karnaphuli River Estuary, Bangladesh: Risk to human health

The Karnaphuli River is one of the prime and most important streams in the southeastern part of Bangladesh. The favorable water current and the geographic location have rendered the Karnaphuly River estuary a suitable habitat and a breeding ground for diverse fish species. Reversely, this estuary has been polluted by discharges from many point and non-point sources due to its location in the catchment area of a heavily industrialized area, Chattagram port city. However, published research concerning the status of toxic and trace elements in some commercially important benthic and pelagic coastal fish species in Karnaphuli River estuary was not found in the existing literature. Therefore, it's an important field of study on the assessment of toxic and trace elements concentration in the commercially important benthic and pelagic coastal fish species and their health taxation in the Karnaphuli River Estuary. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) was used to quantify trace metal concentration in edible parts of the fish species. This study revealed that the rank of the trace metals concentration was as follows (mg/kg): Zn (37.1) > Mn (16.12) > V (11.16) > Cu (9.49) > Rb (5.62) > Pb (2.98) > Cr (1.59) > Co (1.17). The F-test showed that a significant difference at 95 % confidence level in the distribution pattern of trace metals concentration among the examined fish species in the study area. The metal pollution index (MPI) in the muscle of fishes were found to be in the following order: L. bata > P. monodon > T. cirratus > M. bleekeri > O. pabda > H. nehereus > L. calcarifer > P. argenteus > P. paradiseus > T. toli, and the MPIs for most of the benthic fish species were higher compared to the pelagic fishes. On the other hand, the examined fish species were significantly bio-accumulative with the highest bio-accumulation factor value for benthic species. The multivariate analysis identified that the sources of the trace metals were associated with anthropogenic activities. For the human health risk assessment concern, estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient and cancer-causing risk were estimated. The results for non-cancer hazardous index values were found to be lower than unity. On the other hand, the total cancer risk data ranging from 1.24E-05 to 1.70E-05 were fallen within the range for the threshold values (1.0E-06 to 1.0E-04). However, considering the suggested values set by the environmental and regulatory agencies, it has been recommended that no significant non-carcinogenic and cancer-causing health risk for humans was seen due to the consumption of the studied fish species.

Degradation of methylene blue using Co-dopant of Mg and Se into hydroxyapatite composite

In this work, a comparative study of different Magnesium ions content was incorporated into hydroxyapatite (HAP) modified with selenite ions aiming to develop the degradation performance of methylene blue. Although the dopant metal (Mg²⁺ ) has a relatively low ratio, it makes a change in microstructure, morphology, surface area, external surface charge, particle size, and degradation performance. The effect of magnesium and selenium binary doping on microstructural and degradation of methylene blue has been evaluated. The external surface charge measured by zeta potential clarified that the highest negativity was -11.8 mV and it was accomplished in 1.0Mg/Se-HAP. Also, the roughness average grew from 36.8 nm reaching 59.2 nm upon the additional Mg (II). Moreover, TEM micrographs showed that compositions were formed in rod shapes. The process of degradation are optimized, showing effectiveness in methylene blue (MB) degradation of 62.4 % after 150 min of exposure to visible light. Electrostatic attraction and H-bonding and coordination have a vital role in the adsorption process. The recyclability of the as-prepared compositions exhibited that the effectiveness has been reduced to be about 54.2 % after five times of re-using.

Occurrence, spatial distribution and ecological risk assessment of trace elements in surface sediments of rivers and coastal areas of the East Coast of Bangladesh, North-East Bay of Bengal

Coastal and estuarine ecosystems provide habitats for many organisms. Recently, the estuaries and coastal areas of the East Coast of Bangladesh have become heavily contaminated due to dumping of untreated wastewater into the rivers from a number of different industries. The current study analyzes potentially toxic elements contamination in surface sediments of the Karnaphuli, Sangu, Bakkhali and Naf Rivers, Kutubdia and Moheshkhali Channel, and St. Martin's Island, and assesses the consequent ecological risks. The pollution load index (PLI), geoaccumulation index (I_geo) and potential ecological risk (PER) indices show that the contaminated sediments have negative effects on the aquatic environments. The PLI values ranged between 0.45 and 1.67, which suggests the severity of trace-element contamination. The mean I_geo values showed the sediments range from uncontaminated to heavily contaminated state. The Enrichment Factor (EF) values suggested that the sediments were contaminated by anthropogenic sources, and PER values demonstrate that sites at Sangu, Naf and St Martin's Island are less contaminated compared to sites at Karnaphuli, Bakkhali, Kutubdia and Moheshkhali. Overall, results showed that Karnaphuli river is the most contaminated and St Martin's Island is the least based on the spatial distribution of PLI, C_d, PER and ∑TUs of trace metals in surface sediments. Comparing with the neighboring countries, the concentrations of Cd and Pb were found to be higher while Cr is lower in the East Coast of Bangladesh than the estuarine and coastal waters of the Bay of Bengal rim countries. The present study reveals that the lack of water quality guidelines in Bangladesh for the coastal, estuarine and marine water escalated the dumping of untreated wastewater. Immediate measures need to be taken to address the ecological risks so that an effective management program can be undertaken. A systematic approach for collecting pollutant data and use of isotopes to trace anthropogenic sources of contamination is recommended for pollutants like toxic metals, pesticides and other contaminants in sediment and aquatic products in the entire coastal waters of the Bay of Bengal.

Microstructure, morphology and physicochemical properties of nanocomposites containing hydroxyapatite/vivianite/graphene oxide for biomedical applications

Designing a nanocomposite that accumulates biocompatibility and antimicrobial behaviour is an essential requirement for biomedical applications. Hydroxyapatite (HAP), graphene oxide, and vivianite in one ternary nanocomposite with three phases and shapes led to an increase in cell viability to 97.6% ± 4 for the osteoblast cells in vitro. The obtained nanocomposites were investigated for their structural features using X-ray diffraction, while the microstructure features were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope. The analysis showed a decrease in the crystal size to 13 nm, while the HAP grains reached 30 nm. The elongated shape of vivianite reached 200 nm on SEM micrographs. The monoclinic and hexagonal crystal systems of HAP and vivianite were presented in the ternary nanocomposite. The maximum roughness peak height reached 236.1 nm for the ternary nanocomposite from 203.3 nm, while the maximum height of the roughness parameter reached 440.7 nm for the di-nanocomposite of HAP/graphene oxide from 419.7 nm. The corrosion current density reached 0.004 μA/cm² . The ferrous (Fe²⁺ ) and calcium (Ca²⁺ ) ions released were measured and confirmed. Therefore, the morphology of the nanocomposites affected bacterial activity. This was estimated as an inhibition zone and reached 14.5 ± 0.9 and 13.4 ± 1.1 mm for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) after 24 h. The increase in viability and the antibacterial activity refer to the compatibility of the nanocomposite in different medical applications.

Conditions adjustment of polycaprolactone nanofibers scaffolds encapsulated with core shells of Au@Se via laser ablation for wound healing applications

Au@Se core-shell nanoparticles were obtained via laser ablation technique to be incorporated into polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous scaffolds for wound healing applications at different contributions of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs). The synthesized layers were inspected via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR). Additionally, microstructural and surface morphology were followed with different SeNPs contributions before and after fibroblast culturing. Moreover, Selenium dopant is affected Maximum roughness valley depth while it starts from 0.31 µm at Au@0.0Se@PCL reaching 0.457 µm at Au@12Se@PCL; however, after culturing starts from 0.3833 µm reaching 0.41 µm. Besides, the antibacterial activity was screened, showing the absence of inhibition zones in free selenium composition; however, it grows up reaching 8.3 ± 0.8, and 8.0 ± 0.8 for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively at the maximum contribution of selenium. SeNPs contributed composites show higher cell viability than Selenium free composite that it reaches its max in Au@8.0Se@PCL, recording 95.3 ± 2.3%. Composites show an excellent Wound dressing capability that its performance is directly proportional to selenium content. This significant enrichment of antibacterial activity and cell viability could recommend these composites for additional research in medical applications.

Morphological features and mechanical properties of nanofibers scaffolds of polylactic acid modified with hydroxyapatite/CdSe for wound healing applications

Ternary nanocomposites, including graphene oxide (GO), hydroxyapatite (HAP), and cadmium selenite (CdSe) have been encapsulated into nanofibrous scaffolds of polylactic acid. These compositions were indexed as HAP@PLA (C1), CdSe@PLA (C2), HAP/CdSe@PLA (C3), HAP/GO@PLA (C4), and HAP/CdSe/GO@PLA (C5). Structural confirmation is executed by XRD and XPS techniques, while FESEM performs morphological characteristics. CdSe and GO dopants cause a significant increase in nanofiber diameter, HAP/GO@PLA (C4), showing thin surface fibers with fiber diameter up to 3.1 μm, followed by HAP/CdSe/GO@PLA (C4) composite that belongs to filament size up to 2.1 μm. On the other hand, the mechanical properties reveal that the dual dopant composites HAP/CdSe@PLA (C3) and HAP/GO@PLA (C4) hit the maximum tensile fracture values with 1.49 ± 0.3 and 0.99 ± 0.2 MPa. Further, the ternary C5 composite represents the lowest contact angle of 86.1 ± 3.7°. The antibacterial activity increased from 32.4 ± 9.7 and 28.4 ± 6.5% to be 85.3 ± 4.6 and 88.1 ± 5.6% for C1 and C5, respectively, against both E. coli and S. aureus in dark conditions. Moreover, the antibacterial potency enhanced from 75.4 ± 7.6 to be 83.5 ± 6.5 from dark to light conditions against E. coli for the composition of PLA containing the binary composition of HAP/CdSe.

Fibrous scaffolds of Ag/Fe co-doped hydroxyapatite encapsulated into polycaprolactone: Morphology, mechanical and in vitro cell adhesion

The development of a scaffold matrix to promote wound healing is a critical requirement to improve the health care system. For this purpose, electrospun scaffolds of polycaprolactone (PCL) have been encapsulated with hydroxyapatite (HAP) doped with different contributions Ag ions. The obtained scaffolds have been investigated by XRD, FTIR and FESEM. It was shown that scaffolds were configured as cross-linked network with diameters around 0.6, 0.9, 2.1, and 2.5 μm for 0.0Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL, 0.4Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL, 0.6Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL, and 0.8Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL, respectively. Additionally, the composition of 0.8Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL exhibited the highest roughness average of 34 nm, while the inorganic root of co-dopant HAP recorded 44.8 nm. The mechanical properties have been investigated and showed that the maximum strain at break was about 129.31 ± 5.4% at no additional Ag ions, and reached its lowest value of 103.02 ± 3.5% at 0.2Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL. On the other hand, cell viability increased from 94.74 ± 4 to 98.9 ± 4% for 0.0Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL and 0.6Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL, respectively. Further, the antibacterial activity was investigated and exhibited that the inhibition zones of E. coli increased from 0.0 at 0.0Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL to 7.5 ± 1.3 mm for 0.8Ag/Fe-HAP@PCL. Moreover, the in vitro cell attachment showed that fibroblast cells proliferated and spread on the fibers' surface and through scaffolds' porosity.

Biological response, antibacterial properties of ZrO2/hydroxyapatite/graphene oxide encapsulated into nanofibrous scaffolds of polylactic acid for wound healing applications

Designing proper nanofibrous scaffolds for wound healing applications is a necessity for improving the health care system. Hydroxyapatite (HAP), zirconia (ZrO₂), and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets have been encapsulated in mono, di, or tri phases into nanofibrous scaffolds of polylactic acid (PLA). The structure of nanofibrous scaffolds is confirmed using XRD, XPS, while FESEM inspected the surface morphology. The surface morphology detection exhibited that the scaffolds have been formed in networked nanofibers with diameters from 1.19 to 2.38 to 0.59-1.42 µm, while the maximum height of the roughness increased from 610.4 to 809 nm for HAP@PLA and HAP/ZrO₂/GO@PLA, respectively. The contact angle was measured and showed a decreasing trend from 101.2 ± 4.1° and 89.1 ± 5.4° for HAP@PLA and HAP/ZrO₂/GO@PLA nanofibrous scaffolds. Moreover, the mechanical properties were examined and revealed that ZrO₂ dopant induced a significant enhancement into the tensile strength, which increased from 3.49 ± 0.3 to 8.45 ± 1.1 MPa for the nanofibrous scaffolds of HAP@PLA and HAP/ZrO₂/GO@PLA, respectively. The incorporation of ternary phases into PLA nanofibers promoted the cell viability to be around 98.2 ± 5%. The antibacterial potency has been investigated and showed that the activity increased to 69.2 ± 3.6 and 78.1 ± 4.5% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. Additionally, human fibroblasts proliferated on the surface and pores of nanofibrous scaffolds and significantly grown upon the compositional variation.

In-situ datasets of important physical and bio-chemical parameters in the continental shelf of the northern Bay of Bengal

Data equipped with this article were collected from Northern Bay of Bengal (NBoB) wrapping both the eastern and western coast for CTD and sediment samples and only the eastern coast for water sampling. In-situ data of physical parameters, heavy metals, elements, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), nutrients, chlorophyll-a and phaeopigment were sampled across the shallow continental shelf. These data were assembled from 15 CTD points, 76 water samples, and 10 surface sediment samples adjacent to Bangladesh coast. Vertical CTD profiles were collected for Temperature ( °C), Salinity (PSU), Density (kg m⁻³), Turbidity (NTU), Fluorescence (mg m⁻³), and Dissolved Oxygen (DO, mg/l). Heavy metals (mg/l) of water column enlisted as Calcium (Ca), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Cobalt (Co), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Magnesium (Mg), Nickel (Ni), Lead (Pb), and Zinc (Zn). Total Organic Carbon (TOC) was measured as Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon (NPOC) in ppm. Measurements of Chlorophyll - a, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Ammonia, Silica and Phaeopigment were taken from 76 water sampling points. The survey was conducted with the assistance of a fishing vessel ‘Agro food-4 ‘of ‘Sea Resource Ltd.’ lengthening a fishing period from January to February (in winter), 2016. SBE 19 plus V2 CTD machine was deployed for sampling of vertical physical features, Niskin sampler of HYDRO-BIOS consisting of a non-metallic interior was used to collect water sample. Sediment was collected by Van Veen Grab sampler with built-in messenger. Water samples were analyzed following the standard procedure in the laboratory to access in-situ data. The shallow coastal and offshore regions of Bangladesh support for vast biological resources to its adjacent inhabitants. Therefore, understanding the influence of physico-chemical properties on other biological resources in coastal ecosystem is a crucial one to investigate. However, the shelf region of the BoB has a lack of in-situ baseline or reference data to compare with in terms of ocean biogeochemistry. Thus, these datasets can be utilized for further reference and also in validating other remotely-sensed physico-chemical parameters in this region.

Nanofibers of cellulose acetate containing ZnO nanoparticles/graphene oxide for wound healing applications

A combination of nanostructured zinc oxide (ZnO) or graphene oxide or both of them with cellulose acetate (CA) enhances a new functionality of nanofibers aiming to improve bio-composite materials for wound healing application. The obtained nanofibers have been investigated using XRD, FTIR, and FESEM. It was observed that the maximum height of the roughness increased from 253 to 651.9 nm for both GO and ZnO/GO in the powdered phase, while it plunged from 613 to 482 nm and developed to 801 nm for ZnO@CA, GO@CA, and ZnO/GO@CA, receptively. Further, the mechanical properties of the obtained scaffolds have been tested and displayed a tremendous variation of tensile strength from 5.44 ± 0.81 to 12.87 ± 0.93 and 8.82 ± 1.2 MPa, while the toughness increased from 23.29 ± 1.4 to 68.95 ± 4.5 and 57.75 ± 3.6 MJ/m³ for ZnO@CA, GO@CA and ZnO/GO@CA, receptively. Moreover, the cell viability was investigated and showed a progression of 97.38 ± 3.9% for ZnO/GO@CA. Furthermore, the adhesion of human fibroblasts cell line towards the obtained nanofibrous scaffolds were examined and displayed that cells were proliferated and spread considerably through the scaffolds, whereas their filopodia have followed the morphology of the fibers.

Chitosan based-nanoparticles and nanocapsules: Overview, physicochemical features, applications of a nanofibrous scaffold, and bioprinting

Recent advancements in the synthesis, properties, and applications of chitosan as the second after cellulose available biopolymer in nature were discussed in this review. A general overview of processing and production procedures from A to Z was highlighted. Chitosan exists in three polymorphic forms which differ in degree of crystallinity (α, β, and γ). Thus, the degree of deacetylation, crystallinity, surface area, and molecular mass significantly affect most applications. Otherwise, the synthesis of chitosan nanofibers is suffering from many drawbacks that were recently treated by co-electrospun with other polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and polycaprolactone (PCL). Ultimately, this review focuses on the area of new trend utilization of chitosan nanoparticles as nanospheres and nanocapsules, in cartilage and bone regenerative medicine. Owing to its biocompatibility, bioavailability, biodegradability, and costless synthesis, chitosan is a promising biopolymeric structure for water remediation, drug delivery, antimicrobials, and tissue engineering.

Nanofibrous ε-polycaprolactone scaffolds containing Ag-doped magnetite nanoparticles: Physicochemical characterization and biological testing for wound dressing applications in vitro and in vivo

Skin wounds can lead to numerous complications with dangerous health consequences. In this work, magnetite nanoparticles were doped with different concentrations of antimicrobial silver (Ag) ions and incorporated into the electrospun nanofibrous ε-polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds. Nanoparticles and scaffolds with various Ag contents were characterized using a range of physicochemical techniques. Ag entered magnetite as cations and preferentially positioned at tetrahedral sites, introducing lattice distortions and topographic irregularities. Amorphization of the structure due to accommodation of Ag expanded the lattice in the bulk and contracted it on the surface, where broadened distribution of Fe–O coordinations was detected. Promoting spin canting and diminishing the double exchange interaction through altered distribution of ferric and ferrous ions, Ag softened the magnetism of magnetite. By making the nanoparticle structure more defective, Ag modified the interface with the polymer and promoted the protrusion of the nanoparticles from the surface of the polymeric nanofibers, thus increasing their roughness and hydrophilicity, with positive repercussions on cell adhesion and growth. Both the viability of human melanocytes and the antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus increased with the concentration of Ag in the magnetite phase of the scaffolds. Skin wound healing rate in rats also increased in direct proportion with the concentration of Ag in the magnetite phase, and no abnormalities in the dermal and epidermal tissues were visible on day 10 in the treatment group. These results imply an excellent potential of these composite nanofibrous scaffolds for use as wound dressings and in other reconstructive skin therapies.

Polycaprolactone based electrospun matrices loaded with Ag/hydroxyapatite as wound dressings: Morphology, cell adhesion, and antibacterial activity

The development of a scaffold matrix that can inhibit bacterial infection and promote wound healing simultaneously is an essential demand to improve the health care system. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) doped with different concentrations of silver ions (Ag⁺) were incorporated into electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds of polycaprolactone (PCL) using the electrospinning technique. The formed phase was identified using XRD, while the morphological and roughness behavior were investigated using FESEM. It was shown that scaffolds were configured in randomly distributed nanofibers with diameters around of 0.19-0.40, 0.31-0.54, 1.36, 0.122-0.429 μm for 0.0Ag-HAP@PCL, 0.2Ag-HAP@PCL, 0.6Ag-HAP@PCL, and 0.8Ag-HAP@PCL, respectively. Moreover, the maximum roughness peak height increased significantly from 179 to 284 nm, with the lowest and highest contributions of Ag. The mechanical properties were examined and displayed that the tensile strength increased from 3.11 ± 0.21 MPa to its highest value at 3.57 ± 0.31 MPa for 0.4Ag-HAP@PCL. On the other hand, the cell viability also was enhanced with the addition of Ag and improved from 97.1 ± 4.6% to be around 102.3 ± 3.1% at the highest contribution of Ag. The antibacterial activity was determined, and the highest imbibition zones were achieved at the highest Ag dopant to be 12.5 ± 1.1 mm and 11.4 ± 1.5 mm against E. coli and S. aureus. The in vitro cell proliferation was observed through human fibroblasts cell lone (HFB4) and illustrated that cells were able to grow and spread not only on the fibers' surface but also, they were spreading and adhered through the deep pores.

Empirical and theoretical insights into the structural effects of selenite doping in hydroxyapatite and the ensuing inhibition of osteoclasts

The use of ions as therapeutic agents has the potential to minimize the use of small-molecule drugs and biologics for the same purpose, thus providing a potentially more economic and less adverse means of treating, ameliorating or preventing a number of diseases. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a solid compound capable of accommodating foreign ions with a broad range of sizes and charges and its properties can dramatically change with the incorporation of these ionic additives. While most ionic substitutes in HAp have been monatomic cations, their lesser atomic weight, higher diffusivity, chaotropy and a lesser residence time on surfaces theoretically makes them prone to exert a lesser influence on the material/cell interaction than the more kosmotropic oxyanions. Selenite ion as an anionic substitution in HAp was explored in this study for its ability to affect the short-range and the long-range crystalline symmetry and solubility as well as for its ability to affect the osteoclast activity. We combined microstructural, crystallographic and spectroscopic analyses with quantum mechanical calculations to understand the structural effects of doping HAp with selenite. Integration of selenite ions into the crystal structure of HAp elongated the crystals along the c-axis, but isotropically lowered the crystallinity. It also increased the roughness of the material in direct proportion with the content of the selenite dopant, thus having a potentially positive effect on cell adhesion and integration with the host tissue. Selenite in total acted as a crystal structure breaker, but was also able to bring about symmetry at the local and global scales within specific concentration windows, indicating a variety of often mutually antagonistic crystallographic effects that it can induce in a concentration-dependent manner. Experimental determination of the lattice strain coupled with ab initio calculations on three different forms of carbonated HAp (A-type, B-type, AB-type) demonstrated that selenite ions initially substitute carbonates in the crystal structure of carbonated HAp, before substituting phosphates at higher concentrations. The most energetically favored selenite-doped HAp is of AB-type, followed by the B-type and only then by the A-type. This order of stability was entailed by the variation in the geometry and orientation of both the selenite ion and its neighboring phosphates and/or carbonates. The incorporation of selenite in different types of carbonated HAp also caused variations of different thermodynamic parameters, including entropy, enthalpy, heat capacity, and the Gibbs free energy. Solubility of HAp accommodating 1.2 wt% of selenite was 2.5 times higher than that of undoped HAp and the ensuing release of the selenite ion was directly responsible for inhibiting RAW264.7 osteoclasts. Dose-response curves demonstrated that the inhibition of osteoclasts was directly proportional to the concentration of selenite-doped HAp and to the selenite content in it. Meanwhile, selenite-doped HAp had a significantly less adverse effect on osteoblastic K7M2 and MC3T3-E1 cells than on RAW264.7 osteoclasts. The therapeutically promising osteoblast vs. osteoclast selectivity of inhibition was absent when the cells were challenged with undoped HAp, indicating that it is caused by selenite ions in HAp rather than by HAp alone. It is concluded that like three oxygens building the selenite pyramid, the coupling of (1) experimental materials science, (2) quantum mechanical modeling and (3) biological assaying is a triad from which a deeper understanding of ion-doped HAp and other biomaterials can emanate.

Physical, electrochemical and biological evaluations of spin-coated ε-polycaprolactone thin films containing alumina/graphene/carbonated hydroxyapatite/titania for tissue engineering applications

Composite structures are at the frontier of materials science and engineering and polymeric/ceramic composites present one of their most prospective subsets. Prior studies have shown both improvements and deteriorations of properties of polymers upon the addition of ceramic phases to them, but not many studies have dealt with the direct comparison of chemically distinct inorganic additives. The goal of this study was to compare the properties of ε-polycaprolactone (PCL) thin films supplemented with alumina, graphene, carbonated hydroxyapatite or titania particles, individually, in identical amounts (12 wt%). The composite films were analyzed for their phase composition, grain size, morphology, surface roughness, porosity, cell response, mechanical properties and electrochemical performance. Each additive imparted one or more physical or biological properties onto PCL better than others. Thus, alumina increased the microhardness of the films better than any other additive, with the resulting values exceeding 10 MPa. It also led to the formation of a composite with the least porosity and the greatest stability to degradation in simulated body fluid based on open circuit potential (OCP) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Titania made the surface of PCL roughest, which in combination with its high porosity explained why it was the most conducive to the growth of human fibroblasts, alongside being most prone to degradation in wet, corrosive environments and having the highest Poisson's ratio. Graphene, in contrast, made the surface of PCL smoothest and the bulk structure most porous, but also most conductive, with the OCP of -37 mV. The OCP of PCL supplemented with carbonated hydroxyapatite had the highest OCP of -134 mV and also the highest mechanical moduli, including the longitudinal (781 MPa), the shear (106 MPa), the bulk (639 MPa), and the elastic (300 MPa). The only benefit of the deposition of multilayered PCL films supplemented with all four inorganic additives was to enable a relatively high resistance to degradation. This study demonstrates that the properties of thin PCL films could be effectively optimized through the simple choice of appropriate inorganic additives dispersed in them. There is no single additive that proves ideal for improving all the properties of interest in PCL thin films, but their choice should be adjusted to the actual application. One such method of compositional optimization could prove crucial in the effort to develop biocomposites for superior performance in tissue engineering applications.

Seasonal variations of trace metals from water and sediment samples in the northern Bay of Bengal

We aimed to determine the temporal variation of trace metals concentrations in surface water and surface sediment samples at Kutubdia Channel, Bangladesh. Trace metals of samples were detected using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) method. The lowest concentration of metals was found in water samples during post-monsoon season and the highest during pre-monsoon season (Cu: 0.030 ± 0.001 μg/L in pre-monsoon and 0.026 ± 0.002 μg/L in post-monsoon, Zn: 0.087 ± 0.003 μg/L in pre-monsoon and 0.073 ± 0.002 μg/L in post-monsoon, Fe: 0.080 ± 0.001 μg/L in pre-monsoon and 0.055 ± 0.001 μg/L in post-monsoon). In contrast, metal concentration in surface sediment samples were higher in post-monsoon than in pre-monsoon season i.e. Cr 11 mg/kg in pre-monsoon and 12 mg/kg in post-monsoon, Mn 571 mg/kg in pre-monsoon and 606 mg/kg in post-monsoon, As (8 mg/kg in pre-monsoon and 10 mg/kg in post-monsoon, Pb (22 mg/kg in pre-monsoon and 24 mg/kg in post-monsoon, and Fe 2317 mg/kg in pre-monsoon and 2435 mg/kg in post-monsoon. We found a spatial gradient of high to medium to low in trace metal concentration from river to river mouth to offshore area. Considering the sources of metals, land erosion by waves and tidal action, an influx of water and sediment from the surrounding rivers, agricultural waste, industrial effluent and sewage are the most likely sources of metal pollution in the study area. We conclude that proper management strategies should be adopted to control the pollution and conserve the ecosystem health.

Health risk assessment of heavy metal accumulation in the Buriganga and Turag River systems for Puntius ticto, Heteropneustes fossilis, and Channa punctatus

This study aimed to assess the effects of major ecotoxic heavy metals accumulated in the Buriganga and Turag River systems on the liver, kidney, intestine, and muscle of common edible fish species Puntius ticto, Heteropneustes fossilis, and Channa punctatus and determine the associated health risks. K was the predominant and reported as a major element. A large concentration of Zn was detected in diverse organs of the three edible fishes compared with other metals. Overall, trace metal analysis indicated that all organs (especially the liver and kidney) were under extreme threat because the maximum permissible limit set by different international health organizations was exceeded. The target hazard quotient and target cancer risk due to the trace metal content were the largest for P. ticto. Thus, excessive intake of P. ticto from the rivers Buriganga and Turag could result in chronic risks associated with long-term exposure to contaminants. Histopathological investigations revealed the first detectable indicators of infection and findings of long-term injury in cells, tissues, and organs. Histopathological changes in various tissue structures of fish functioned as key pointers of connection to pollutants, and definite infections and lesion types were established based on biotic pointers of toxic/carcinogenic effects. The analysis of histopathological alterations is a controlling integrative device used to assess pollutants in the environment.

Distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in commonly consumed seafood from coastal areas of Bangladesh and associated human health implications

Levels, distribution, possible sources and potential risks of 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated comprehensively in frequently consumed seafood species collected from the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Samples were collected in winter and summer, 2015. The total concentration of PAHs (∑PAHs) in the examined seafood was 184.5-2806.6 ng/g wet weight (ww) in winter and 117.9-4216.8 ng/g ww in summer, respectively. The levels of ∑PAHs were comparable to or higher than those reported from other coastal areas. Seasonal variation was not significant for the majority of the monitored PAHs. Spatial distribution revealed that the seafood collected from areas with recent urbanization and industrialization (Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Sundarbans) was more contaminated with PAHs than those from the unindustrialized area (Meghna Estuary). Low-molecular-weight isomers dominated the PAH composition. Molecular ratios suggested the abundance of mixed sources of PAHs in the Bangladeshi coastal areas with a slight imposition toward the petrogenic origin. A preliminary evaluation of human health risk indicated that the dietary PAH exposure from consumption of Bangladeshi seafood would certainly induce adverse health effects. This finding suggests the need to enhance risk management regarding seafood consumption through public advisory in Bangladesh.

Distribution, Source Apportionment, and Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Surficial Sediments from the Coastal Areas of Bangladesh

The surficial sediments were collected in winter and summer (2015) from the coastal areas of Bangladesh and analyzed for 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The total concentration of PAHs (∑PAHs) were 349.8-11,058.8 and 199.9-17,089.1 ng/g dry weight (dw) in winter and summer, respectively. Sediements from the areas with recent urbanization and industrialization (Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, and Sundarbans) were more contaminated with PAHs than the unindustrialized area (Meghna Estuary). The concentrations of ∑PAHs were slightly higher in summer than those in winter, but the seasonal variations were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Molecular ratios suggested mixed sources of PAHs in the Bangladeshi coastal areas with a slight imposition of pyrolytic inputs closely related to shipping and fishing activities as well as industrial and municipal sewage discharge. According to ecological risk assessment, the measured levels of sedimentary PAHs exceeded some of the existing national and international environmental quality guidelines/standards, and thus might cause acute biological damage in the studied areas of the Bay of Bengal coast of Bangladesh.

Occurrence, distribution and possible sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the surface water from the Bay of Bengal coast of Bangladesh

Full profile of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the coastal surface water from Bangladesh were analyzed by GC-MS/MS to explore the status of contamination, spatiotemporal distribution and to trace their potential sources. The total concentrations of dissolved PCBs (∑PCBs, sum of all congeners) varied from 32.17 to 160.7 ng/L and 46.45-199.4 ng/L in winter and summer, respectively, and the ranges were comparable to or higher than those recorded in the surface water from the coastal areas of India, China, Japan, Italy, Belgium and USA. The difference in the levels of PCBs between the two seasons was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). However, spatial distribution revealed that the areas with recent urbanization and industrialization (Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and Sundarbans) were more contaminated with PCBs than the unindustrialized area (Meghna Estuary). Lightly to moderately chlorinated (2-6 Cl) homologs dominated the PCB profiles. Our analyses (congener profile and homolog composition) elucidated that the past and on-going use of PCB-containing equipment (e.g. capacitors and transformers) as well as the anthropogenic activities such as urban developments, commercial and industrial establishments (e.g. ship breaking and port activities) might be the potential sources of PCB emission in Bangladesh. A set of congeners based on their detection frequencies and abundance were identified and categorized as potential environmental marker PCBs, which can be used for the future selective monitoring studies regarding reasonable limitations on full congener assessment. According to the existing national and international water quality guidelines/standards, PCB concentrations recorded in this study could potentially cause biological damage. Essentially, the findings of this first comprehensive report on the PCB contamination in the surface water in Bangladesh may provide a reference to future studies of these compounds in the Bay of Bengal.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in commonly consumed seafood from the coastal area of Bangladesh: occurrence, distribution, and human health implications

Dietary intake is the most important route of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exposure and seafood is the major dietary component for the coastal populations. It is, therefore, an urgent need to assess the levels of PCBs in seafood. A comprehensive congener-specific evaluation of PCBs was carried out for the first time in Bangladesh. All 209 congeners of PCBs in 48 seafood samples (5 finfish and 2 shellfish species) collected in winter and summer of 2015 were measured by GC-MS/MS. Regardless of season and site, the ∑PCBs (ng/g wet weight) in finfish and shellfish were in the range of 6.4-86.2 and 3.8-37.7, respectively. The results were comparable to or higher than those observed in other studies worldwide, particularly from Spain, China, Korea, Thailand, and Hong Kong. No significant seasonal variation was observed in the levels of ∑PCBs in the examined seafood (p > 0.05); however, interspecies differences were significant (p < 0.05). Nonetheless, spatial distribution revealed seafood collected from the areas with recent urbanization and industrialization (Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, and Sundarbans) were more contaminated with PCBs than the area unaffected by industries (Meghna Estuary). Moderately chlorinated (4-6 Cl) homologs dominated the PCB profiles. The congener profile and homolog composition revealed that the source origin of PCBs in the Bangladeshi seafood was related to mixtures of technical PCBs formulations. The dietary exposure assessment revealed that the coastal residents are sufficiently exposed to the dietary PCBs through seafood consumption which may cause severe health risk including dioxin-like toxic effects.

A Case of Severe Coarctation of Aorta Associated With Bicuspid Aortic Valve Managed Surgically

Coarctation of the aorta is a congenital cardiac malformation that can go undiagnosed until old age with only hypertension as a marker of its presence because clinical signs can be subtle and overlooked if a complete physical exam is not performed. Long-term survival is exceptional in patients with untreated aortic coarctation. In this case report, we present a late diagnosis of aortic coarctation in a 45-year-old male. Our patient was relatively asymptomatic until he presented with exertional dyspnea and fatigue in his fourth decade of life in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), on the month of August, 2016. The patient was managed by surgery of aorta. After the 6 months follow-up visit, the patient was in good clinical condition.

Occurrence and assessment of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in commonly consumed seafood from the coastal area of Bangladesh

This study reports the first evidence of the occurrence of PFAAs in commonly consumed seafood from the coastal area of Bangladesh. Fifteen target PFAAs in 48 seafood samples (5 finfish and 2 shellfish species) were measured by HPLC-MS/MS. The ΣPFAAs in finfish and shellfish were in the range of 0.32-14.58 and 1.31-8.34 (ng/g wet weight), respectively. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in finfish (0.1-3.86ng/g ww), whereas perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in shellfish (0.07-2.39ng/g ww) were the most abundant PFAAs. The results were comparable with other studies worldwide, particularly from China, Spain, Sweden, and USA. The majority of monitored PFAAs did not show clear seasonal variation. However, seafood from the southeast area (Cox's Bazar and Chittagong) showed relatively higher levels of PFAAs. Moreover, the dietary exposure assessment revealed that the daily intakes of PFAAs via seafood consumption were far less than the health-based guidelines, indicating low health risk for the Bangladeshi coastal residents.

Heavy metals in sediment and their accumulation in commonly consumed fish species in Bangladesh

Six heavy metals (chromium [Cr], nickel [Ni], copper [Cu], arsenic [As], cadmium [Cd], and lead [Pb]) were measured in sediments and soft tissues of eleven commonly consumed fish species collected from an urban river in the northern part of Bangladesh. The abundance of heavy metals in sediments varied in the decreasing order of Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb > As > Cd. The ranges of mean metal concentrations in fish species, in mg/kg wet weight (ww), were as follows: Cr, 0.11-0.46; Ni, 0.77-2.6; Cu, 0.57-2.1; As, 0.43-1.7; Cd, 0.020-0.23; and Pb, 0.15-1.1. Target hazard quotients (THQs) and target carcinogenic risk (TR) showed the intake of As and Pb through fish consumption were higher than the recommended values, indicating the consumption of these fish species is associated with noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks.

Occurrence and distribution of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in surface water and sediment of a tropical coastal area (Bay of Bengal coast, Bangladesh)

This study reports the first evidence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in surface waters and sediments collected from the coastal area of Bangladesh. Fifteen target PFAAs, including C4-14-PFCAs (perfluoroalkyl carboxylates) and C4, C6, C8, and C10-PFSAs (perfluoroalkyl sulfonates), were quantified by HPLC-MS/MS. The ΣPFAAs in surface water and sediment samples were in the range of 10.6 to 46.8ng/L and 1.07 to 8.15ng/gdw, respectively. PFOA in water (3.17-27.8ng/L) and PFOS in sediment samples (0.60-1.14ng/gdw) were found to be the most abundant PFAAs, and these concentrations were comparable to or less than most other reported values, particularly those recorded from the coastal areas of China, Japan, Korea and Spain. The majority of the monitored PFAAs did not show clear seasonal variation. The southeastern part (Cox's Bazar and Chittagong) of the Bangladeshi coastal area was more contaminated with PFAAs than the southern (Meghna Estuary) and southwestern parts (Sundarbans). Industrial and municipal wastewater effluents, ship breaking and port activities were identified as potential sources of the PFAA contamination in this region. Field-based sediment water distribution coefficients (KD) were calculated and corrected for organic carbon content (KOC), which reduced the variability between samples. The values of log KD (1.63-2.88) and log KOC (4.02-5.16) were higher than previously reported values, which may indicate that the partitioning of PFAAs in a tropical coastal ecosystem is different from other ecosystems, such as temperate and sub-tropical regions. Although a preliminary environmental hazard assessment indicated that PFOA or PFOS levels do not currently exceed the acute safety thresholds, we should keep in mind that they are bioavailable and can accumulate in the food chain. Therefore, the ubiquity of PFAAs in the coastal area of Bangladesh warrants further studies characterizing their specific sources and the potential long-term risks they present to both humans and wildlife.

Human health risks from heavy metals in fish of Buriganga river, Bangladesh

Heavy metals are known to cause deleterious effects on human health through food chain. Human health risks were evaluated from consumption of heavy metal contaminated fish from Buriganga River in Bangladesh. Whole body of five fish species (Puntius ticto, Puntius sophore, Puntius chola, Labeo rohita and Glossogobius giuris) were analyzed which contained various concentrations of Cd, As, Pb, Cr, Ni, Zn, Se, Cu, Mo, Mn, Sb, Ba, V and Ag. Concentrations of Mn, Zn, Se and Pb in all fish species were above the Food Safety Guideline (FSG) by WHO/FAO. Assessment of noncarcinogenic health hazard by target hazard quotient (THQ) indicated no concern from consumption of these fish except for Mn. However, all metals together may affect human health as revealed by hazard index (HI). The target cancer risk (TR) values suggested carcinogenic risk from Ni and As. Taken together it can be concluded that there is potential human health risk in consuming fish from river Buriganga.

Trace metal contamination in commercial fish and crustaceans collected from coastal area of Bangladesh and health risk assessment

Trace metals contamination in commercial fish and crustaceans have become a great problem in Bangladesh. This study was conducted to determine seven trace metals concentration (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in some commercial fishes and crustaceans collected from coastal areas of Bangladesh. Trace metals in fish samples were in the range of Cr (0.15 - 2.2), Ni (0.1 - 0.56), Cu (1.3 - 1.4), Zn (31 - 138), As (0.76 - 13), Cd (0.033 - 0.075), and Pb (0.07 - 0.63 mg/kg wet weight (ww)), respectively. Arsenic (13 mg/kg ww) and Zn (138 mg/kg ww) concentrations were remarkably high in fish of Cox's Bazar due to the interference of uncontrolled huge hatcheries and industrial activities. The elevated concentrations of Cu (400), Zn (1480), and As (53 mg/kg ww) were also observed in crabs of Cox's Bazar which was considered as an absolutely discrepant aquatic species with totally different bioaccumulation pattern. Some metals in fish and crustaceans exceeded the international quality guidelines. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and target cancer risk (TR) revealed high dietary intake of As and Pb, which was obviously a matter of severe public health issue of Bangladeshi coastal people which should not be ignored and concentrate our views to solve this problem with an integrated approaches. Thus, continuous monitoring of these toxic trace elements in seafood and immediate control measure is recommended.

Use of Anticoagulant Warfarin in Patients Presenting With Atrial Fibrillation in a Tertiary Level Hospital

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia in the World, occurring in approximately 0.4% of the general population. The purpose of the present study was to see the trend of use of warfarin in hospital admitted patients with atrial fibrillation. It was conducted in the department of cardiology, University Cardiac Centre, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2008 to January 2009. A total of 150 patients with atrial fibrillation were enrolled in this study. Out of them, male were 60(40%) and female 90(60%); age range 22-79 years. Most common presenting symptoms were palpitation (80%) & dyspnoea (70%). Chronic rheumatic heart disease (Mitral stenosis) (33%) was found in most cases followed by IHD (22%), hypertension (21%). According to CHADS₂ score, most of the patients belonged to moderate risk group (47%) and 32% in low risk group. Anticoagulation with warfarin was used in 40% cases of valvular AF & 25% patients with non valvular AF. Among non valvular AF, it was prescribed for 38% in high risk group, 34% in moderate risk & 3% in low risk group. The study states that warfarin is underused in both valvular & non valvular AF.

Presence of heavy metals in fruits and vegetables: Health risk implications in Bangladesh

The presence of toxic heavy metals such as As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn in nationally representative samples of highly consumed fruits and vegetables was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Their concentrations exceeded the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) set by FAO/WHO for Pb in mango and Cd in tomato among the analyzed fruits and vegetables. Pb content in mango was found to be six times higher than the safe limit at production level. Health risks associated with the intake of these metals were evaluated in terms of estimated daily intake (EDI), and carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks by target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI). EDI values of all the metals were found to be below the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). The THQs of all metals were <1, suggesting no health hazards for adult population. However, total THQs of Mn and Cu were >1 through consumption of all vegetables, indicating significant health risks. HI was found to be <1 (0.825) for consumption of fruits; however, it was >1 (3.727) for vegetable consumption, suggesting adverse health effects from vegetable consumption only. The total carcinogenic risk (CR) of As was below the threshold level (10(-6)) and 9.82E-05 for Pb, suggesting no potential CR from As consumption, but indicating the risk of Pb-induced carcinogenesis. The findings of this study reveal the health risks associated with the consumption of heavy metals through the intake of selected fruits and vegetables in adult population of Bangladesh.

Their concentrations exceeded the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) set by FAO/WHO for Pb in mango and Cd in tomato among the analyzed fruits and vegetables. Pb content in mango was found to be six times higher than the safe limit at production level. Health risks associated with the intake of these metals were evaluated in terms of estimated daily intake (EDI), and carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks by target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI). EDI values of all the metals were found to be below the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). The THQs of all metals were <1, suggesting no health hazards for adult population. However, total THQs of Mn and Cu were >1 through consumption of all vegetables, indicating significant health risks. HI was found to be <1 (0.825) for consumption of fruits; however, it was >1 (3.727) for vegetable consumption, suggesting adverse health effects from vegetable consumption only. The total carcinogenic risk (CR) of As was below the threshold level (10(-6)) and 9.82E-05 for Pb, suggesting no potential CR from As consumption, but indicating the risk of Pb-induced carcinogenesis. The findings of this study reveal the health risks associated with the consumption of heavy metals through the intake of selected fruits and vegetables in adult population of Bangladesh.

Health risk assessment of trace elements via dietary intake of 'non-piscine protein source' foodstuffs (meat, milk and egg) in Bangladesh

Concentrations of six trace elements [chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As)] were assessed in 'non-piscine protein source' foodstuffs (meat, milk and eggs) to evaluate contamination level and human health risks in Bangladesh. The range of Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb and As in the investigated foodstuffs was 1.24-2.17, 1.29-2.56, 0.92-2.31, 0.12-0.44, 0.15-0.48 and 0.14-0.57 mg kg fresh weight(-1), respectively. The estimated mean levels of most of the elements were higher than the maximum allowable concentration (MAC) for dietary foods. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of Cr and Cd were higher than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI) for children, indicating that they are more susceptible to toxic elements through food consumption. The target hazard quotients (THQs) and target carcinogenic risk (TCR) of As (THQ > 1 and TCR > 10(-4)) for both the adults and children suggest that the consumers of non-piscine foodstuffs (especially cow milk and chicken meat) are exposed chronically to metal pollution with carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health consequences.

A comprehensive assessment of arsenic in commonly consumed foodstuffs to evaluate the potential health risk in Bangladesh

Arsenic (As), particularly of its inorganic form (iAs) is highly toxic, and its presence in food composites is a matter of concern for the public health safety, specifically in Bangladesh which is regarded as the most arsenic affected country throughout the world. This study was carried out to investigate the levels of As in the composite samples of commonly consumed foodstuffs collected from 30 different agro-ecological zones for the first time in Bangladesh. Most of the individual food composites contain a considerable amount of As which was, as a whole, in the range of 0.077-1.5mg/kg fw which was lower than those reported from Spain, EU, France, Korea, whereas higher than those of Mexico, Chile, Japan, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Serbia, respectively. Cereals, vegetables, milk, and fish contribute about 90% to the daily intake of inorganic arsenic. Human health risk of dietary iAs was assessed separately for both the rural and urban adults. The estimated daily dietary intakes (EDI) of iAs for the exposed rural (3.5) and urban residents (3.2 μg/kg-BW/day) clearly exceeded the previous provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI) value of 2.1 μg/kg-BW/day, recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). From the health point of view, this study concluded that both the rural and urban residents of Bangladesh are exposed to carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks who consume As-contaminated water and foodstuffs.

The concentration, source and potential human health risk of heavy metals in the commonly consumed foods in Bangladesh

Seven food items, namely, meat, egg, fish, milk, vegetables, cereals and fruits were collected from Bogra district, Bangladesh to evaluate the levels of heavy metal and associated health risk to the adults and children. The samples were analyzed for the quantification of selected heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb) on inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer followed by acid digestion. In general, the highest concentrations of the studied metals were detected in vegetables, cereals, and fruits. The range of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in the foods were 0.058-10, 0.036-25, 0.045-40, 0.005-7.1, 0.001-5.5 and 0.005-13 mg/kg fw, respectively. Multivariate principal component analysis (PCA) revealed three major groups of the studied metals and showed significant anthropogenic contributions of the Ni, Cu, and As in foods. Health risk assessment was evaluated in terms of target hazard quotient and target carcinogenic risk (TR) which showed that the intake of some metals through foods were higher than the recommended values, consequently consumption of the foods may be associated with non-carcinogenic health risks. Nonetheless, elevated levels of As and Pb were also found to be associated with lifetime carcinogenic risk to the consumers.

Human health risk assessment of heavy metals in tropical fish and shellfish collected from the river Buriganga, Bangladesh

Although fish, crustacean, and shellfish are significant sources of protein, they are currently affected by rapid industrialization, resulting in increased concentrations of heavy metals. Accumulation of heavy metals (V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sb, Ba, and Pb) and associated human health risk were investigated in three fish species, namely Ailia coila, Gagata youssoufi, and Mastacembelus pancalus; one crustacean (prawn), Macrobrachium rosenbergii; and one Gastropoda, Indoplanorbis exustus, collected from the Buriganga River, Bangladesh. Samples were collected from the professional fishermen. Cu was the most accumulated metal in M. rosenbergii. Ni, As, Ag, and Sb were in relatively lower concentrations, whereas relatively higher accumulation of Cr, Mn, Zn, and Se were recorded. Mn, Zn, and Pb were present in higher concentrations than the guidelines of various authorities. There were significant differences in metal accumulation among different fish, prawn, or shellfish species. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR) were calculated to estimate the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks, respectively. The THQ for individual heavy metals were below 1 suggesting no potential health risk. But combined impact, estimated by hazard index (HI), suggested health risk for M. pancalus consumption. Although consumption of fish at current accumulation level is safe but continuous and excess consumption for a life time of more than 70 years has probability of target cancer risk.

Trace elements in different land use soils of Bangladesh and potential ecological risk

Bogra city is highly susceptible to environmental pollution due to overpopulation, rapid industrialization, and urbanization during the last decades. The levels of six trace elements (chromium, nickel, copper, arsenic, cadmium, and lead) in seven different land use soils in Bangladesh were assessed. The ranges of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in studied soils were 6.3-256, 8.3-271, 13-279, 7.5-87, 0.09-29, and 5.3-624 mg/kg, respectively. The pollution load index (PLI) values for all land uses were higher than 1, indicating the progressive deterioration of soil due to trace elements contamination. In view of the potential ecological risk (PER), soils from all land uses showed moderate to very high potential ecological risk. Among the elements, As and Cd showed a higher potential ecological risk than the others.

Trace elements in two staple cereals (rice and wheat) and associated health risk implications in Bangladesh

Concentrations of fourteen trace elements (Cd, As, Pb, Cr, Ni, Zn, Se, Cu, Mo, Mn, Sb, Ba, V and Ag) in the composite samples of most frequently consumed two staple foods, i.e. rice and wheat (collected from 30 different agroecological zones for the first time in Bangladesh) were measured by ICP-MS. The mean concentrations (mg/kg fresh weight) of Cd, As, Pb, Cr, Ni, Zn, Se, Cu, Mo, Mn, Sb, Ba, V and Ag were found as 0.088, 0.321, 0.713, 0.183, 0.213, 13.178, 0.0256, 1.985, 0.102, 4.654, 0.0033, 0.144, 0.081 and 0.007 and 0.011, 0.281, 0.221, 0.352, 0.145, 15.472, 0.245, 1.894, 0.209, 22.077, 0.0012, 3.712, 0.023 and 0.0013 in rice and wheat samples, respectively. Dietary risk of human health (non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks) was assessed by USEPA deterministic approaches. Total target hazard quotient (THQ) values for As and Pb were higher than 1, suggesting that people would experience significant health risks from consuming rice and wheat. However, the THQ of other metals were all less than 1. Also, the estimation showed that the target carcinogenic risk (TR) of As and Pb exceeded the accepted risk level of 1 × 10(-6). Moreover, concerning the nutritional requirements of essential elements for a sound health, the recommended doses for the daily intake of Mn was conveniently supplied by the studied cereals; however, Cr, Zn, Se, Cu and Mo were below the recommend daily allowances (RDAs). Thus, the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk of As and Pb with lower supplementation of essential elements via staple foods for Bangladeshi people is a matter of concern.

Dietary intake of trace elements from highly consumed cultured fish (Labeo rohita, Pangasius pangasius and Oreochromis mossambicus) and human health risk implications in Bangladesh

Concentrations of fourteen trace elements (essential and toxic) in the composite samples (collected from 30 different agro-ecological zones for the first time in Bangladesh) of three highly consumed cultured fish species (Labeo rohita, Pangasius pangasius and Oreochromis mossambicus) were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The estimated daily dietary intake (EDI) of all the studied elements was estimated on the basis of a calculation of the amount of fish consumed by Bangladeshi households (mean fish consumption of 49.5 g person(-1) d(-1)). The studied fish species pose no risk with respect to the EDI of Cd, Pb, Cr, Ni, Zn, Se, Cu, Mo, Mn, Sb, Ba, V, and Ag. Among the three studied fishes O. mossambicus showed higher content of dietary arsenic (1.486 mg kg(-1)). From the human health point of view, this study showed that the inhabitants in the arsenic-contaminated area, who consume arsenic-contaminated water with fish (especially for O. mossambicus), are exposed chronically to arsenic pollution with carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks.

Metal speciation in soil and health risk due to vegetables consumption in Bangladesh

This study was conducted to investigate the contamination level of heavy metals in soil and vegetables, chemical speciation, and their transfer to the edible part of vegetables. Metals were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The ranges of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in agricultural soils were 3.7-41, 3.9-36, 3.7-46, 2.3-26, 0.6-13, and 4.5-32 mg/kg, respectively. The metals were predominantly associated with the residual fractions of 39, 41, 40, 40, 34, and 41 % for Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb, respectively. Considering the metal transfer from soil to the edible part of vegetables, the mean transfer factors (TFs) were in the descending order of Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb > As > Cd. In the edible tissues of vegetables, the concentrations of As, Cd, and Pb in most vegetable samples exceeded the maximum permissible levels, indicating not safe for human consumption. Total target hazard quotient (THQ) of the studied metals (except Cr) from all vegetables were higher than 1, indicated that if people consume these types of vegetables in their diet, they might pose risk to these metals. Total values of carcinogenic risk (CR) were 3.2 for As and 0.15 for Pb which were higher than the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) threshold level (0.000001), indicating that the inhabitants consuming these vegetables are exposed to As and Pb with a lifetime cancer risk.

Assessment of trace metals in fish species of urban rivers in Bangladesh and health implications

Levels of six metals i.e. chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in three fish species (Channa punctatus, Heteropneustes fossilis and Trichogaster fasciata) from three urban rivers in Bangladesh were measured. Concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb in fish species were 0.75-4.8, 0.14-3.1, 1.1-7.2, 0.091-0.53, 0.007-0.13, and 0.052-2.7mg/kg ww, respectively. The analyzed metals were significantly different between species and seasons (p<0.05). The target hazard quotients (THQs) and carcinogenic risk (CR) for individual metal showed that As and Pb in muscle was particularly hazardous and potential risk for the low, medium and high fish consumer in Bangladesh. Some of the trace metals' concentrations are higher than the recommended value, which suggest that the water and fish of these rivers are not completely safe for human health.

Metal speciation in sediment and their bioaccumulation in fish species of three urban rivers in Bangladesh

Six trace metals (chromium [Cr], nickel [Ni], copper [Cu], arsenic [As], cadmium [Cd] and lead [Pb]) were measured in sediments and soft tissues of three commonly consumed fish species (Channa punctatus, Heteropneustes fossilis, and Trichogaster fasciata) collected from three urban rivers around Dhaka City, Bangladesh. The abundance of total metals in sediments varied in the decreasing order of Cr > Ni > Pb > Cu > As > Cd. Sequential extraction tests showed that the studied metals were predominantly associated with the residual fraction followed by the organically bound phase. The range of metal concentration in fish species were as follows: Cr (0.75-4.8), Ni (0.14-3.1), Cu (1.1-7.2), As (0.091-0.53), Cd (0.008-0.13), and Pb (0.052-2.7 mg/kg wet weight [ww]). The rank of biota-sediment accumulation factor for fish species were in the descending order of Cu > As > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd. Metal concentrations in fish exceeded the international permissible standards suggesting that these species are not safe for human consumption.

Trace metals in soil and vegetables and associated health risk assessment

The objective of this study was to assess the contamination level of trace metals in soil and vegetables and health risk to the urban population in Bangladesh. The range of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb in agricultural soils was 158-1160, 104-443, 157-519, 41-93, 3.9-13, and 84-574 mg/kg, respectively. Sequential extraction tests revealed that the studied metals were predominantly associated with the residual fraction, followed by the organically bound phase. Concerning Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb in vegetables, more than 50 % samples exceeded the FAO/WHO recommended permissible limits. Considering the transfer of metals from soil to vegetables, Cu and Cd exhibited higher transfer factor (TF) values than the other metals. Target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal was below 1, suggesting that people would not experience significant health hazards if they ingest a single metal from vegetables. However, total metal THQ signifies the potential non-carcinogenic health hazard to the highly exposed consumers. The carcinogenic risk (TR) of As (1.9 × 10(-4)) and Pb (2.3 × 10(-5)) through consumption of vegetables were higher than the USEPA threshold level (10(-6)), indicating potential cancer risks.

Arsenic and lead in foods: a potential threat to human health in Bangladesh

The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk of arsenic and lead to adults and children via daily dietary intake of food composites in Bangladesh was estimated. The target hazard quotients (THQs), hazard index (HI) and target carcinogenic risk (TR) were calculated to evaluate the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk from arsenic and lead. Most of the individual food composites contain a considerable amount of arsenic and lead. The highest mean concentrations of arsenic were found in cereals (0.254 mg kg⁻¹ fw) and vegetables (0.250 mg kg⁻¹ fw), and lead in vegetables (0.714 mg kg⁻¹ fw) and fish (0.326 mg kg⁻¹ fw). The results showed the highest THQs of arsenic in cereals and lead in vegetables for both adults and children which exceeded the safe limit (> 1) indicating that cereals and vegetables are the main food items contributing to the potential health risk. The estimated TR from ingesting dietary arsenic and lead from most of the foods exceeded 10⁻⁶, indicating carcinogenic risks for all adult people of the study area.

Heavy metals in cereals and pulses: health implications in Bangladesh

This research was conducted to evaluate the concentration of seven common heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) in cereals and pulses and associated health implications in Bangladesh. USEPA deterministic approaches were followed to assess the carcinogenic risk (CR) and noncarcinogenic risk which was measured by target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI). Total THQ values for As and Pb were higher than 1, suggesting that people would experience significant health risks if they ingest As and Pb from cereals and pulses. However, the estimated HI value of 1.7 × 10(1) (>1) elucidates a potential noncarcinogenic risk to the consumers. Also, the estimation showed that the carcinogenic risk of As (5.8 × 10(-3)) and Pb (4.9 × 10(-5)) exceeded the USEPA accepted risk level of 1 × 10(-6). Thus, the carcinogenic risk of As and Pb with nutritional deficiency of essential elements for Bangladeshi people is a matter of concern.
