Investigating the potential of mineral precipitation in co-pyrolysis biochar: Development of a novel Cd (II) adsorption material utilizing dual solid waste

Ionic cadmium (Cd (II)) in water is a significant threat to ecosystems, the environment, and human health. Research is currently focused on developing efficient adsorption materials to combat Cd (II) pollution in water. One promising solution involves co-pyrolyzing solid residue from anaerobic digestion of food waste with oil-based drill cuttings pyrolysis residue to create a biochar with high organic matter content. This biochar has a lower heavy metal content and leaching toxicity compared to China's national standards, making it both safe and resourceful. It exhibits a high adsorption capacity for Cd (II) in water, reaching up to 47.80 ± 0.37 mg/g. Raising the pyrolysis temperature above 600 °C and increasing the amount of pyrolysis residue beyond 30 % enhances the biochar's adsorption capacity. The adsorption process is primarily driven by mineral precipitation, offering a promising approach for dual waste resource management and reducing heavy metal pollution.

Simultaneous electrocoagulation and E-peroxone coupled with ultrafiltration membrane for shale gas produced water treatment

Membrane fouling caused by the organics-coated particles was the main obstacle for the highly efficient shale gas produced water (SGPW) treatment and recycling. In this study, a novel hybrid electrocoagulation (EC) and E-peroxone process coupled with UF (ECP-UF) process was proposed to examine the efficacy and elucidate the mechanism for UF fouling mitigation in assisting SGPW reuse. Compared to the TMP (transmembrane pressure) increase of -15 kPa in the EC-UF process, TMP in ECP-UF system marginally increased to -1.4 kPa for 3 filtration cycles under the current density of 15 mA/cm2. Both the total fouling index and hydraulically irreversible fouling index of the ECP-UF process were significantly lower than those of EC-UF process. According to the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory, the potential barriers was the highest for ECP-UF processes due to the substantial increase of the acid-base interaction energy in ECP-UF process, which was well consistent with the TMP and SEM results. Turbidity and TOC of ECP-UF process were 63.6% and 45.8% lower than those of EC-UF process, respectively. According to the MW distribution, the variations of compounds and their relative contents were probably due to the oxidation and decomposing products of the macromolecular organics. The number of aromatic compound decreased, while the number of open-chain compounds (i.e., alkenes, alkanes and alcohols) increased in the permeate of ECP-UF process. Notably, the substantial decrease in the relative abundance of di-phthalate compounds was attributed to the high reactivity of these compounds with ·OH. Mechanism study indicated that ECP could realize the simultaneous coagulation, H2O2 generation and activation by O3, facilitating the enhancement of ·OH and Alb production and therefore beneficial for the improved water quality and UF fouling mitigation. Therefore, the ECP-UF process emerges as a high-efficient and space-saving approach, yielding a synergistic effect in mitigating UF fouling for SGPW recycling.

Persisting Effects in Daphnia magna Following an Acute Exposure to Flowback and Produced Waters from the Montney Formation

Hydraulic fracturing extracts oil and gas through the injection of water and proppants into subterranean formations. These injected fluids mix with the host rock formation and return to the surface as a complex wastewater containing salts, metals, and organic compounds, termed flowback and produced water (FPW). Previous research indicates that FPW is toxic to Daphnia magna (D. magna), impairing reproduction, molting, and maturation time; however, recovery from FPW has not been extensively studied. Species unable to recover have drastic impacts on populations on the ecological scale; thus, this study sought to understand if recovery from an acute 48 h FPW exposure was possible in the freshwater invertebrate, D. magna by using a combination of physiological and molecular analyses. FPW (0.75%) reduced reproduction by 30% and survivorship to 32% compared to controls. System-level quantitative proteomic analyses demonstrate extensive perturbation of metabolism and protein transport in both 0.25 and 0.75% FPW treatments after a 48 h FPW exposure. Collectively, our data indicate that D. magna are unable to recover from acute 48 h exposures to ≥0.25% FPW, as evidence of toxicity persists for at least 19 days post-exposure. This study highlights the importance of considering persisting effects following FPW remediation when modeling potential spill scenarios.

The Acute Toxicity of Salinity in Onshore Unconventional Gas Waters to Freshwater Invertebrates in Receiving Environments: A Systematic Review

Industries such as unconventional natural gas have seen increased global expansion to meet the increasing energy needs of our increasing global population. Unconventional gas uses hydraulic fracturing that produces significant volumes of produced waters, which can be highly saline and pose a toxic threat to freshwater invertebrates if exposure via discharges, spills, leaks, or runoff were to occur. The primary aim of the present review was to determine the sodium (Na⁺ ) and chloride (Cl^- ) content of these waters as an approximate measure of salinity and how these values compare to the NaCl or synthetic marine salt acute toxicity values of freshwater invertebrate taxa. Shale gas produced waters are much more saline with 78 900 ± 10 200 NaCl mg/L and total dissolved solids (TDS) of 83 200 ± 12 200 mg/L compared to coal bed methane (CBM) produced waters with 4300 ± 1100 NaCl mg/L and TDS of 5900 ± 1300 mg/L and pose a far greater toxicity risk from NaCl to freshwater invertebrates. In addition, the toxicity of other major ions (Ca²⁺ , K⁺ , Mg²⁺ , CO 3 2 - , HCO₃ ^- , and SO 4 2 - ) and their influence on the toxicity of Na⁺ and Cl^- were evaluated. Exposure of untreated and undiluted shale gas produced waters to freshwater invertebrates is likely to result in significant or complete mortality. Shale gas produced waters have higher concentrations of various metals compared with CBM produced waters and are more acidic. We recommend future research to increase the reporting and consistency of water quality parameters, metals, and particularly organics of produced waters to provide a better baseline and help in further investigations. Managing upstream oil and gas emissions: A public health oriented approach

Oil and natural gas are the largest primary global energy sources, and upstream gas emissions from these fuels can impact global climate change and local public health. This paper employs a public health-oriented perspective that reviews grey and academic literature, industry data, technical reports, and policy trends to highlight issues of emissions monitoring. We identify gaps in the existing landscape of emissions reduction strategies and highlight options for addressing them. Policy recommendations include the use of new digital monitoring technologies to better understand causes of emission events, to create data-driven oil and gas regulations, and to begin accurately measuring the volumes of gases released during oil and gas production. Areas for future research relating to emissions and public health impacts are outlined to further enable oil and gas policy discussions.

Volatilization behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the oil-based residues of shale drill cuttings

Shale gas, an emerging oil-bearing and pillar industry at home and abroad, has a very large impact on economic development and industry, but the resulting emerging pollutants pose a serious threat to the environment. Drilling cuttings, the primary byproduct of the exploration and mining of shale gas, are potentially hazardous types of waste that seriously deplete land resources and pose environmental safety problems. In this paper, a long-term static volatilization experiment was conducted to study the volatilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the oil-based residue of shale gas drill cuttings. Furthermore, the effects of some relevant environmental factors controlling the volatilization behavior were evaluated, including different particle sizes, temperatures and illuminances. The results showed that (1) the volatilization concentrations of PAHs gradually increased with prolonged volatilization time. PAHs with smaller ring numbers were present at the highest concentrations among the detected PAHs, and they were more readily volatilized and could be detected earlier. (2) The C-history method was found to significantly describe the kinetic process of the volatilization of PAHs. (3) Different environmental factors had different effects on the volatilization of PAHs. We found that increasing the temperature and illuminance and decreasing the particle size increased volatility. Through canonical correspondence analysis, PAHs volatilization was found to be a complex process, so volatilization tests under simulated environmental conditions are of scientific and environmental interest.

Comparing conventional and green fracturing fluids by chemical characterisation and effect-based screening

There is public and scientific concern about air, soil and water contamination and possible adverse environmental and human health effects as a result of hydraulic fracturing activities. The use of greener chemicals in fracturing fluid aims to mitigate these effects. This study compares fracturing fluids marketed as either 'conventional' or 'green', as assessed by their chemical composition and their toxicity in bioassays. Chemical composition was analysed via non-target screening using liquid chromatography - high resolution mass spectrometry, while toxicity was evaluated by the Ames fluctuation test to assess mutagenicity and CALUX reporter gene assays to determine specific toxicity. Overall, the results do not indicate that the 'green' fluids are less harmful than the 'conventional' ones. First, there is no clear indication that the selected green fluids contain chemicals present at lower concentrations than the selected conventional fluids. Second, the predicted environmental fate of the identified compounds does not seem to be clearly distinct between the 'green' and 'conventional' fluids, based on the available data for the top five chemicals based on signal intensity that were tentatively identified. Furthermore, Ames fluctuation test results indicate that the green fluids have a similar genotoxic potential than the conventional fluids. Results of the CALUX reporter gene assays add to the evidence that there is no clear difference between the green and conventional fluids. These results do not support the claim that currently available and tested green-labeled fracturing fluids are environmentally more friendly alternatives to conventional fracturing fluids.

Leaching behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from oil-based residues of shale gas drill cuttings

Cuttings are the main solid residues which are generated from drilling operations. Due to the presence of heavy and radioactive elements, the environment risk posed by cuttings has attracted increasing attention. In this work, a short-term static immersion experiment was carried out to investigate the leaching of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from oil-based residues of shale gas drilling cuttings. Furthermore, the effects of some relevant environmental factors controlling the leaching behavior were evaluated, including the different particle sizes, pH, extraction time, solid-to-liquid (S/L) ratio and dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration. The results showed that (1) the concentrations of leached PAHs gradually increased with prolonged leaching time, but the cumulative amount of PAHs released during leaching was less than 3% of the total. (2) The Elovich, parabolic diffusion and power function models were found to fit the experimental data better than the first-order kinetic equation, indicating that the leaching of PAHs was controlled by the coupling of diffusion and chemical reactions at the source surface. (3) Different environmental factors had different impacts on the leaching of PAHs: the shaking time and presence of DOM increased leachability, the particle size and S/L ratio decreased leachability, and the pH did not affect the leachability of PAHs. Therefore, PAHs leaching was a complex process, and it is of scientific and environmental interest to conduct the leaching tests under the simulated environmental conditions.

Influence of shale gas development on core forests in the subtropical karst region in southwestern China

Core forests are an important component of forest landscapes and wildlife habitat. Although the core forests were damaged during the development of shale gas sites, it remain unclear how much damage the shale gas development has caused to this ecologically vulnerable region. We analyzed high-resolution remote sensing images of a shale gas development area in 2012, 2014, and 2017 in the karst region in southwestern China. The results showed that the core forest area decreased by approximately 4.0% from 2012 to 2017. Of this decrease, approximately 32.3% was related to the shale gas development activities, while 67.7% was related to other human activities, i.e., agricultural lands and residential developments. Approximately 5.6% of the decrease in the core forest was for new pipelines, with 0.5 ha occurred in 2012-2014 and 248.6 ha occurred in 2014-2017. Of the shale gas development activities, the pipeline constructions were most detrimental to the core forest. The patchiness of the core forest increased by 8.2% from 2012 to 2017 by the expansions of dry fields, towns, and settlements. The core forest Effective Mesh Size (MESH) decreased by 86.3%, primarily caused by the shale gas development pipelines. In conclusion, human activities that were not directly related to shale gas development were the main driver of the core forest decreases. The pipelines caused most losses of the core forest among the shale gas activities and the impacts deteriorated as the shale gas development proceeds. Therefore, we propose that new shale gas pads should be placed adjacent to existing shale gas pipelines and new shale gas pipelines should be constructed in parallel with existing roads to reduce the damages on core forest.

Changes to hepatic nutrient dynamics and energetics in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) following exposure to and recovery from hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water

Hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water (FPW) is a highly complex and heterogenous wastewater by-product of hydraulic fracturing practices. To date, no research has examined how FPW exposure to freshwater biota may affect energetic homeostasis following subsequent induction of detoxification processes. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were acutely exposed for 48 h to either 2.5% or 7.5% FPW, and hepatic metabolism was assessed either immediately or following a 3-week recovery period. Induction of xenobiotic metabolism was observed with an 8.8-fold increase in ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity after 48 h exposure to 7.5% FPW, alongside a 10.3-fold increase in the mRNA abundance of cyp1a, both of which returned to basal level after three weeks. Glucose uptake capacity was elevated by 6.8- and 12.9-fold following 2.5% and 7.5% FPW exposure, respectively, while alanine uptake was variable. Activity measurements and mRNA abundance of key enzymes involved in hepatic metabolism indicated that aerobic metabolism was maintained with exposure, as was glycolysis. Gluconeogenesis, as measured by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) activity, decreased by ~30% 48 h following 2.5% FPW exposure and ~20% 3 weeks after 7.5% FPW exposure. The abundance of pepck mRNA activity followed similar, yet non-significant, trends. Finally, a delayed increase in amino acid catabolism was observed, as glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity was increased 2-fold in 7.5% FPW exposed fish when compared to saline  control fish at the 3-week time point. We provide evidence to suggest that although hepatic metabolism is altered following acute FPW exposure, metabolic homeostasis generally returns 3-weeks post-exposure.

Remote Sensing of Forest Structural Changes Due to the Recent Boom of Unconventional Shale Gas Extraction Activities in Appalachian Ohio

Dense unconventional shale gas extraction activities have occurred in Appalachian Ohio since 2010 and they have caused various landcover changes and forest fragmentation issues. This research investigated the most recent boom of unconventional shale gas extraction activities and their impacts on the landcover changes and forest structural changes in the Muskingum River Watershed in Appalachian Ohio. Triple-temporal high-resolution natural-color aerial images from 2006 to 2017 and a group of ancillary geographic information system (GIS) data were first used to digitize the landcover changes due to the recent boom of these unconventional shale gas extraction activities. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) was then employed to form forest patches as image objects and to accurately quantify the forest connectivity. Lastly, the initial and updated forest image objects were used to quantify the loss of core forest as the two-dimensional (2D) forest structural changes, and initial and updated canopy height models (CHMs) derived from airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point clouds were used to quantify the loss of forest volume as three-dimensional (3D) forest structural changes. The results indicate a consistent format but uneven spatiotemporal development of these unconventional shale gas extraction activities. Dense unconventional shale gas extraction activities formed two apparent hotspots. Two-thirds of the well pad facilities and half of the pipeline right-of-way (ROW) corridors were constructed during the raising phase of the boom. At the end of the boom, significant forest fragmentation already occurred in both hotspots of these active unconventional shale gas extraction activities, and the areal loss of core forest reached up to 14.60% in the densest concentrated regions of these activities. These results call for attention to the ecological studies targeted on the forest fragmentation in the Muskingum River Watershed and the broader Appalachian Ohio regions.

Multi-criteria decision making and fairness evaluation of water ecological carrying capacity for inter-regional green development

Determining water ecological carrying capacity (WECC) is of great significance to ensure inter-regional green development. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation framework for WECC assessment in the Yangtze River Economic Zone (YREZ), China. Effects of water resources, socio-economic, and ecological elements on WECC can be evaluated based on multi-criteria decision analysis. Gini and unbalance coefficients are used for measuring the regional fairness between WECC and socio-economic development. Surface water production pressure (SWPP) and groundwater pollution risk (GPR) are further regarded as indicators for expressing water resources constraint on shale gas extraction in the YREZ. Results disclose that the average WECC level decreases from 0.439 in 2000 to 0.4007 in 2016, which is the opposite of the changing trend in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region. A high WECC level appears in Zhejiang (0.5126) with a good state, but that of Guizhou (0.3983), Anhui (0.3968), Hunan (0.3914), and Chongqing (0.3651) are at the alert state. The obstacle factors of WECC in the eastern YREZ mostly originate from socio-economic and water resource subsystems, while that in the middle and western YREZ mainly arise from water resources and ecological subsystems. Fairness analysis shows a well-matching characteristic between the overall WECC and socio-economic performances due to a majority of their Gini coefficients lower than 0.4, while a poor matching characteristic exists in terms of provincial differences owing to their varied unbalance coefficients, especially in Guizhou, Jiangsu, and Shanghai. Moreover, Chongqing with most of shale gas reserves is characterized by slight SWPP (1.0202) and GPR (0.0188), but the prospect of shale gas development in Sichuan is not optimistic due to its high SWPP (1.0846) and GPR (0.0647). Recycling of flowback and product waters can significantly lighten regional water resources pressure. This presented framework can be applied into many other Chinese cities (e.g., Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region) with slight modifications according to their actual situations for supporting water resource managers and government with decision making.

Investigating the Potential Toxicity of Hydraulic Fracturing Flowback and Produced Water Spills to Aquatic Animals in Freshwater Environments: A North American Perspective

Unconventional methods of oil and natural gas extraction have been a growing part of North America's energy sector for the past 20-30 years. Technologies such as horizontal hydraulic fracturing have facilitated the exploitation of geologic reserves that were previously resistant to standard drilling approaches. However, the environmental risks associated with hydraulic fracturing are relatively understudied. One such hazard is the wastewater by-product of hydraulic fracturing processes: flowback and produced water (FPW). During FPW production, transport, and storage, there are many potential pathways for environmental exposure. In the current review, toxicological hazards associated with FPW surface water contamination events and potential effects on freshwater biota are assessed. This review contains an extensive survey of chemicals commonly associated with FPW samples from shale formations across North America and median 50% lethal concentration values (LC₅₀) of corresponding chemicals for many freshwater organisms. We identify the characteristics of FPW which may have the greatest potential to be drivers of toxicity to freshwater organisms. Notably, components associated with salinity, the organic fraction, and metal species are reviewed. Additionally, we examine the current state of FPW production in North America and identify the most significant obstacles impeding proper risk assessment development when environmental contamination events of this wastewater occur. Findings within this study will serve to catalyze further work on areas currently lacking in FPW research, including expanded whole effluent testing, repeated and chronic FPW exposure studies, and toxicity identification evaluations.

Enhancement of ethylbenzene removal from contaminated gas and corresponding mechanisms in biotrickling filters by a biosurfactant from piggery wastewater

This study prepared a biosurfactant by using piggery wastewater to enhance ethylbenzene removal from contaminated gas in a biotrickling filter (BTF). Experiments were conducted to investigate the enhancement of ethylbenzene removal and the biofilm characteristics in present of the biosurfactant. Results demonstrated that the optimal biosurfactant concentration was 0.1 CMC and the corresponding ethylbenzene removal rate was 87.2%, much higher than that (68.9%) achieved in free of biosurfactant. The inlet ethylbenzene concentration and the empty bed residence time (EBRT) affected ethylbenzene removal as well. In present of 0.1 CMC of biosurfactant, ethylbenzene removal rate decreased from 87.2% to 72.2% with the increasing inlet ethylbenzene from 1000 to 2200 mg/m³, and decreased from 91.1% to 42.7% with the EBRT shorten from 30 to 7.5 s. For the enhancement mechanisms of ethylbenzene removal in BTF, the biosurfactant changed the contents of extracellular polymers (EPS) and decreased negative surface charge of the biofilm in the BTF, which improved the mass transfer of ethylbenzene to biofilm and facilitated the aggregation of microbes, and further improved the removal of ethylbenzene. All in all, the biosurfactant would be a feasible way to enhance the removal of ethylbenzene by the BTF.

Tradeoffs in cost competitiveness and emission reduction within microgrid sustainable development considering price-based demand response

Microgrids (MGs) connected with multiple distributed renewable generations, energy storage equipment, and stochastic loads have recently attracted significant attention. However, uncertainties in renewable energy availabilities and demand side widely exist in the MG energy system. A top-down decision strategy should be developed with respect to the conflicts among different stakeholders. This study presents a layered modeling framework for the synergic optimization of the MG system with considering price-based demand response program. This layered framework can not only involve multiple renewable technologies for ensuring sustainable development but also capture the noncooperative relationship among different stakeholders. The leader enjoys a decision-making priority to optimize the environmental performance of the MG energy system. The follower takes corresponding actions to optimize economic goals. The effectiveness of the developed model is then illustrated through a real-world MG system in Lize Financial Business District, Beijing, China. Results can facilitate the following: (a) identification of the effects of load shifting and charging-discharging characteristics on the MG operation； (b) development of sustainable electricity generation in environmentally and economically sustainable ways. The layered model proves its effectiveness in developing collaborative schemes for comprehensively achieving the cost-emission goals compared with the traditional single-objective models.

Temporal changes in vegetation around a shale gas development area in a subtropical karst region in southwestern China

Over the past decade, various aspects of China's fragile karst environments, including net primary productivity (NPP), have been changed or threatened by shale gas development. This industry is still developing, so it is important to understand what drives environmental changes, particularly in NPP, when shale gas pads are constructed in sensitive areas. Few previous studies have addressed this issue, so we quantified how the NPP changed, and what drove the changes, when a large shale gas area was developed at the end of 2012 in a mountainous karst area in Sichuan Province. We calculated the trend in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from 2012 to 2017 and used the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) model to calculate the changes in NPP at different distances from the pads using remote sensing images for July 2012 and July 2017 and field survey data from July 2017. We then identified the factors that drove the changes with Geodetector. The results showed that the NDVI increased across 64.2% of the shale gas development area from 2012 to 2017 because of climate change, and only showed a significant decrease across 0.3% of the area, mainly because of the shale gas development. The NPP decreased by 110.1 t because of the shale gas development in July 2017, or by about 0.35% of the total NPP. Of this, 93.8 t were associated with the pad construction areas, and 16.3 t were associated with the area around the pads. The changes in NPP around the shale gas pads were mainly confined to within 150 m during the construction phase and 90 m once the construction was completed. The NPP at different distances from the pads during the construction period was related to the distance from the pad, slope, and land use. Once completed, the NPP mainly varied with distance, land use, and the distance from the pad to rural settlements. The NPP was most strongly influenced by the distance from the pad and the area of the pad. We suggest that, when planning the construction of shale gas pads, the pads should be sited on gently sloping areas, the number of wells on each pad should be optimized, land use type changes outside the pad should be limited, and the land beyond the pads should be reclaimed in a timely manner to allow the NPP to recover.

Chemical and bioassay assessment of waters related to hydraulic fracturing at a tight gas production site

Publicly available chemical assessments of hydraulic fracturing related waters are generally based on shale gas practices in the U.S. There is a lack of information on hydraulic fracturing related gas development from EU countries and more generally on other types of extractions. This research fills this knowledge gap by presenting chemical and bioassay assessments of hydraulic fracturing related waters from a tight gas development in the Netherlands. Fracturing fluid, flowback water and groundwater from surrounding aquifers before and after the actual fracturing were analysed by means of high resolution liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, the Ames test and three chemical activated luciferase gene expression bioassays aimed at determining genotoxicity, oxidative stress response and polyaromatic hydrocarbon contamination. After sample enrichment a higher number of peaks can be found in both fracturing fluid and flowback samples. No clear differences in chemical composition were shown in the groundwater samples before and after hydraulic fracturing. Preliminary environmental fate data of the tentatively identified chemicals points towards persistence in water. Clear genotoxic and oxidative stress responses were found in the fracturing fluid and flowback samples. A preliminary suspect screening resulted in 25 and 36 matches in positive and negative ionisation respectively with the 338 possible suspect candidates on the list. Extensive measures relating to the handling, transport and treatment of hydraulic fracturing related waters are currently in place within the Dutch context. The results of the present study provide a scientific justification for such measures taken to avoid adverse environmental and human health impacts.

Reuse of shale gas flowback and produced water: Effects of coagulation and adsorption on ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis combined process

The shale gas flowback and produced water (FPW) from hydraulic fracturing in the Sichuan province of China has relatively low to moderate levels of total dissolved solids (<20 g/L) and organics (<50 mg/L of dissolved organic carbon). As such, a combined ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO) system can be successfully applied to desalinate this feed water with the goal of reuse. However, the concentration of influent organic matter and particulates in the UF and RO stage is high, and the overall ionic and organics composition is highly complex, so that the membrane processes do not perform well, also due to fouling. To ensure the long-term and efficient operation of the UF-RO stages, a combined pretreatment of the FPW with coagulation and adsorption was investigated. The effect of different parameters on the performance on the system was studied in detail. Overall, the coagulation-adsorption pre-treatment greatly reduced fouling of the membrane processes, thanks to the high removal rate of turbidity (98.8%) and dissolved organic carbon (86.3%). The adsorption of organic matter by powdered activated carbon was best described by the Freundlich equilibrium model, with a pseudo second-order model representing the adsorption kinetics. Also, the various ions had competitive removal rates during the adsorption step, a phenomenon reported for the first time for FPW treatment. Also, an optimal dose of activated carbon existed to maximize fouling reduction and effluent quality. The overall treatment system produced a high-quality water streams, suitable for reuse.

Simultaneous removal of NH3-N and COD from shale gas distillate via an integration of adsorption and photo-catalysis: A hybrid approach

In view of the circulation cooling water (CCW) quality for refining and petrochemical enterprises, distillates obtained from shale gas produced water after alkali precipitation, filtration and multi-effect evaporation required further purification to remove NH₃-N and COD. Illumination, adsorption, photocatalysis after adsorption equilibrium (AP) and integration of adsorption and photocatalysis (IOAP) were carried out to optimize the distillates treatment. AP and IOAP treatments were feasible for the simultaneous removal of NH₃-N and COD from the target distillate, while IOAP treatment had much better adaptability and practicability due to its economic cost and easy operation. In IOAP, the removal rate of COD and NH₃-N was high up to 59.0% and 88.9%, respectively, under Xenon lamp illumination (25 A) for 60 min with 10 g/L zeolite. The residual concentration of COD and NH₃-N were 73.9 mg/L and 23.0 mg/L, respectively, which could well meet the CCW quality. Furthermore, the results of zeolites characterization (SEM-EDX, BET and FTIR) and kinetics analysis showed that the removal of COD in IOAP process mainly depended on the effect of photocatalysis excited by zeolite, while the removal of NH₃-N was in virtue of the synergistic effect of photocatalysis and adsorption.

Towards Quantifying the Likelihood of Water Resource Impacts from Unconventional Gas Development

Gas production from unconventional reservoirs has led to widespread environmental concerns. Despite several excellent reviews of various potential impacts to water resources from unconventional gas production, no study has systematically and quantitatively assessed the potential for these impacts to occur. We use empirical evidence and numerical and analytical models to quantify the likelihood of surface water and groundwater contamination, and shallow aquifer depletion from unconventional gas developments. These likelihoods are not intended to be exact. They provide a starting point for comparing the probabilities of adverse impacts between types of water resources and pathways. This analysis provides much needed insight into what are "probable" rather than simply "possible" impacts. The results suggest that the most likely water resource impacts are surface water and groundwater contamination from spills at the well pad, which can be as high as 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 for each gas well, respectively. For wells that are hydraulically fractured, the likelihood of contamination due to inter-aquifer leakage is 1 in 10⁶ or lower (dependent on the separation distance between the production formation and the aquifer). For gas-bearing formations that were initially over-pressurized, the potential for contamination from inter-aquifer leakage after production ceases could be as high as 1 in 400 where the separation between gas formation and shallow aquifer is 500 m, but will be much lower for greater separation distances (more characteristic of shale gas).

A screening approach to improve water management practices in undeveloped shale plays, with application to the transboundary Eagle Ford Formation in northeast Mexico

Hydraulic fracturing (HF) operations have transformed the unconventional energy industry, leading to a global increase in hydrocarbon production. Despite this, only the US, China, Canada and Argentina currently dominate production of unconventional resources, with the majority of shale basins globally remaining unprofitable to develop. An important gap in current water-energy nexus research, which this study addresses, is the assessment of potential water use to satisfy HF procedures in emergent plays. This work presents a screening tool for assessing first-order estimates of water impacts in undeveloped shale plays, testing the approach in the transboundary Eagle Ford (EF) play in northeast Mexico. We couple surface water and groundwater stress indicators derived from global hydrological variables to depict a baseline water stress index. Relative water stress is mapped for proposed blocks to be leased by the Mexican government in the future. We simulate four HF scenarios to assess new total water stress indicators for each block, considering shale production schemes using representative well drilling density (well lateral length(s) per unit area) and HF water intensity (HF water volume per unit lateral length) from existing EF development in Texas. Results suggest that the most feasible management scenario would consider the drilling of ∼1360 new unconventional wells/yr with projected HF water use of ∼57 Mm³/yr (0.7% of the total water withdrawals). The remaining scenarios will largely affect groundwater resources. Though applied to the EF in Mexico, this screening tool can assess water use constraints in emerging unconventional plays globally.

Hazardous Air Pollutants Associated with Upstream Oil and Natural Gas Development: A Critical Synthesis of Current Peer-Reviewed Literature

Increased energy demands and innovations in upstream oil and natural gas (ONG) extraction technologies have enabled the United States to become one of the world's leading producers of petroleum and natural gas hydrocarbons. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists 187 hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) that are known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects. Several of these HAPs have been measured at elevated concentrations around ONG sites, but most have not been studied in the context of upstream development. In this review, we analyzed recent global peer-reviewed articles that investigated HAPs near ONG operations to ( a) identify HAPs associated with upstream ONG development, ( b) identify their specific sources in upstream processes, and ( c) examine the potential for adverse health outcomes from HAPs emitted during these phases of hydrocarbon development.

Estimation of the water cycle related to shale gas production under high data uncertainties: Dutch perspective

The potential water demand for fracturing fluids along with the possible flowback and produced water production is assessed for the Dutch Posidonia shale. Total water demand estimated for 25 years of the field development using historic data from the U.S. plays varies between 12.2 and 36.9 Mm³. The maximal annual water consumption of 0.95-2.88 Mm³ is expected in the peak years of shale gas production. These figures are much lower than the availability of any potential water sources, which include drinking water, fresh and brackish groundwater, river water, effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and sea water. River water is considered the most promising water source for fracturing fluids in the Dutch Posidonia shale based on its availability (>6·10⁴ Mm³/year) and quality (only bacterial composition needs to be controlled). Total wastewater production for the whole period of the field development is estimated between 6.6 and 48.0 Mm³. Wastewater recycling can cover significant part of the source water demand for fracturing fluid. However, high mineral content of the wastewater as well as temporal and spatial discrepancies between wastewater production and water demand will form obstacles for wastewater recycling. The assessment framework developed in this study may be applied for other shale gas fields with high uncertainties regarding subsurface properties, connate formation water characteristics and future legislative framework.

How to Adapt Chemical Risk Assessment for Unconventional Hydrocarbon Extraction Related to the Water System

We identify uncertainties and knowledge gaps of chemical risk assessment related to unconventional drillings and propose adaptations. We discuss how chemical risk assessment in the context of unconventional oil and gas (UO&G) activities differs from conventional chemical risk assessment and the implications for existing legislation. A UO&G suspect list of 1,386 chemicals that might be expected in the UO&G water samples was prepared which can be used for LC-HRMS suspect screening. We actualize information on reported concentrations in UO&G-related water. Most information relates to shale gas operations, followed by coal-bed methane, while only little is available for tight gas and conventional gas. The limited research on conventional oil and gas recovery hampers comparison whether risks related to unconventional activities are in fact higher than those related to conventional activities. No study analyzed the whole cycle from fracturing fluid, flowback and produced water, and surface water and groundwater. Generally target screening has been used, probably missing contaminants of concern. Almost half of the organic compounds analyzed in surface water and groundwater exceed TTC values, so further risk assessment is needed, and risks cannot be waived. No specific exposure scenarios toward groundwater aquifers exist for UO&G-related activities. Human errors in various stages of the life cycle of UO&G production play an important role in the exposure. Neither at the international level nor at the US federal and the EU levels, specific regulations for UO&G-related activities are in place to protect environmental and human health. UO&G activities are mostly regulated through general environmental, spatial planning, and mining legislation.

Succession of toxicity and microbiota in hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water in the Denver-Julesburg Basin

Hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water (FPW) samples were analyzed for toxicity and microbiome characterization over 220 days for a horizontally drilled well in the Denver-Julesberg (DJ) Basin in Colorado. Cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and estrogenicity of FPW were measured via the BioLuminescence Inhibition Assay (BLIA), Ames II mutagenicity assay (AMES), and Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES). Raw FPW stimulated bacteria in BLIA, but were cytotoxic to yeast in YES. Filtered FPW stimulated cell growth in both BLIA and YES. Concentrating 25× by solid phase extraction (SPE) revealed significant toxicity throughout well production by BLIA, toxicity during the first 55 days of flowback by YES, and mutagenicity by AMES. The selective pressures of fracturing conditions (including toxicity) affected bacterial and archaeal communities, which were characterized by 16S rRNA gene V4V5 region sequencing. Conditions selected for thermophilic, anaerobic, halophilic bacteria and methanogenic archaea from the groundwater used for fracturing fluid, and from the native shale community. Trends in toxicity echoed the microbial community, which indicated distinct stages of early flowback water, a transition stage, and produced water. Biota in another sampled DJ Basin horizontal well resembled similarly aged samples from this well. However, microbial signatures were unique compared to samples from DJ Basin vertical wells, and wells from other basins. These data can inform treatability, reuse, and management decisions specific to the DJ Basin to minimize adverse environmental health and well production outcomes.

Removal of organic compounds from shale gas flowback water

Ozonation, sorption to granular activated carbon and aerobic degradation were compared as potential treatment methods for removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) fractions and selected organic compounds from shale gas flowback water after pre-treatment in dissolved air flotation unit. Flowback water was characterised by high chemical oxygen demand and DOC. Low molecular weight (LMW) acids and neutral compounds were the most abundant organic fractions, corresponding to 47% and 35% of DOC respectively. Ozonation did not change distribution of organic carbon fractions and concentrations of detected individual organic compounds significantly. Sorption to activated carbon targeted removal of individual organic compounds with molecular weight >115 Da, whereas LMW compounds remained largely unaffected. Aerobic degradation was responsible for removal of LMW compounds and partial ammonium removal, whereas formation of intermediates with molecular weight of 200-350 Da was observed. Combination of aerobic degradation for LMW organics removal with adsorption to activated carbon for removal of non-biodegradable organics is proposed to be implemented between pre-treatment (dissolved air floatation) and desalination (thermal or membrane desalination) steps.

Game-based analysis of energy-water nexus for identifying environmental impacts during Shale gas operations under stochastic input

Environmental issues have become some of the greatest challenges encountered across the life cycle Shale gas operations, and mostly involve the management, disposal, and spill of flowback and produced (FP) waters during the process of hydraulic fracturing. This study evaluates Shale gas resources, addresses water resource management problems, and identifies the corresponding environmental implications of FP waters under uncertainty. Multiple tools, including structural optimization, process design, cost analysis, environmental assessment, and stochastic technology, are integrated into a general modeling framework based on game theory. This mathematic framework corresponds to a dominant-subordinate-interactive problem, where two major participants are identified as the downstream decision maker at the dominant level (e.g., power generation sector) and the upstream decision maker at the subordinate level (e.g., Shale gas producer). The Monte Carlo technique is used for simulating the estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) of a single well. Thereafter, the developed model is applied to a special case study of the Marcellus Shale play in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Multiple decisions regarding gas production, processing, water management, as well as electricity generation would been examined under different probability levels. Results indicate that the changes in violation levels would lead to distinct environmental and economic performances of the supply chain. A lower probability level of the EUR value would correspond to an increased reliability on fulfilling the system demands, and then to higher economic benefits and freshwater supply; conversely, a higher probability level of the EUR value would result in lower economic benefits and lower freshwater supply, and the risk of violating the EUR value would also increase.

Assessing Residential Exposure Risk from Spills of Flowback Water from Marcellus Shale Hydraulic Fracturing Activity

Identifying sources of concern and risk from shale gas development, particularly from the hydraulic fracturing process, is an important step in better understanding sources of uncertainty within the industry. In this study, a risk assessment of residential exposure pathways to contaminated drinking water is carried out. In this model, it is assumed that a drinking water source is contaminated by a spill of flowback water; probability distributions of spill size and constituent concentrations are fit to historical datasets and Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate a distribution of risk values for two scenarios: (1) use of a contaminated reservoir for residential drinking water supply and (2) swimming in a contaminated pond. The swimming scenario did not produce risks of concern from a single exposure of 1 h duration, but 11 such 1-h exposures did produce risks of 10⁻⁶ due to radionuclide exposure. The drinking water scenario over a 30-year exposure duration produced cancer risk values exceeding 10⁻⁶ for arsenic, benzene, benzo(a)pyrene, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, pentachlorophenol, and vinyl chloride. However, this extended exposure duration is probably not realistic for exposure by a spill event. Radionuclides produced risks in the residential drinking water scenario of 10⁻⁶ in just 8 h, a much more realistic timeline for continual exposure due to a spill event. In general, for contaminants for which inhalation exposure was applicable, this pathway produced the highest risks with exposure from ingestion posing the next greatest risk to human health followed by dermal absorption (or body emersion for radionuclides). Considering non-carcinogenic effects, only barium and thallium exceed target limits, where the ingestion pathway seems to be of greater concern than dermal exposure. Exposure to radionuclides in flowback water, particularly through the inhalation route, poses a greater threat to human health than other contaminants examined in this assessment and should be the focus of risk assessment and risk mitigation efforts.

Response of Aquatic Bacterial Communities to Hydraulic Fracturing in Northwestern Pennsylvania: A Five-Year Study

Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing extraction procedures have become increasingly present in Pennsylvania where the Marcellus Shale play is largely located. The potential for long-term environmental impacts to nearby headwater stream ecosystems and aquatic bacterial assemblages is still incompletely understood. Here, we perform high-throughput sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene to characterize the bacterial community structure of water, sediment, and other environmental samples (n = 189) from 31 headwater stream sites exhibiting different histories of fracking activity in northwestern Pennsylvania over five years (2012-2016). Stream pH was identified as a main driver of bacterial changes within the streams and fracking activity acted as an environmental selector for certain members at lower taxonomic levels within stream sediment. Methanotrophic and methanogenic bacteria (i.e. Methylocystaceae, Beijerinckiaceae, and Methanobacterium) were significantly enriched in sites exhibiting Marcellus shale activity (MSA+) compared to MSA- streams. This study highlighted potential sentinel taxa associated with nascent Marcellus shale activity and some of these taxa remained as stable biomarkers across this five-year study. Identifying the presence and functionality of specific microbial consortia within fracking-impacted streams will provide a clearer understanding of the natural microbial community's response to fracking and inform in situ remediation strategies.

Superhydrophilic Functionalization of Microfiltration Ceramic Membranes Enables Separation of Hydrocarbons from Frac and Produced Water

The environmental impact of shale oil and gas production by hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is of increasing concern. The biggest potential source of environmental contamination is flowback and produced water, which is highly contaminated with hydrocarbons, bacteria and particulates, meaning that traditional membranes are readily fouled. We show the chemical functionalisation of alumina ceramic microfiltration membranes (0.22 μm pore size) with cysteic acid creates a superhydrophilic surface, allowing for separation of hydrocarbons from frac and produced waters without fouling. The single pass rejection coefficients was >90% for all samples. The separation of hydrocarbons from water when the former have hydrodynamic diameters smaller than the pore size of the membrane is due to the zwitter ionically charged superhydrophilic pore surface. Membrane fouling is essentially eliminated, while a specific flux is obtained at a lower pressure (<2 bar) than that required achieving the same flux for the untreated membrane (4-8 bar).

Does increased traffic flow around unconventional resource development activities represent the major respiratory hazard to neighboring communities?: knowns and unknowns

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

The objective of this review is to demonstrate that the focus on air emissions causing respiratory effects and associated with gas development may be misplaced by attributing those exposures mainly to well pad activities.

RECENT FINDINGS

The most recent publications on the health effects of hydraulic fracturing operations seem to parallel findings from studies of diesel particulate exposure near roadways and the health effects associated with those exposures. It seems at least possible that some, if not all, of the respiratory effects associated with unconventional resource development may be traffic-related. Road traffic generated by hydraulic fracturing operations is one possible source of environmental impact whose significance has, until now, been largely neglected in the available literature with 4000 to 6000 vehicles visiting the well pad.

SUMMARY

Exposures from well pads diminish rapidly with distances of only a few kilometers but there is evidence showing disease risk multiple kilometers from well pads. This leaves open the possibility that the several thousand vehicle trips per well pad create traffic emissions over wide areas away from the pad. This alternative source of exposure has not previously been well studied but is being more seriously considered.

Organic Pollutants in Shale Gas Flowback and Produced Waters: Identification, Potential Ecological Impact, and Implications for Treatment Strategies

Organic contaminants in shale gas flowback and produced water (FPW) are traditionally expressed as total organic carbon (TOC) or chemical oxygen demand (COD), though these parameters do not provide information on the toxicity and environmental fate of individual components. This review addresses identification of individual organic contaminants in FPW, and stresses the gaps in the knowledge on FPW composition that exist so far. Furthermore, the risk quotient approach was applied to predict the toxicity of the quantified organic compounds for fresh water organisms in recipient surface waters. This resulted in an identification of a number of FPW related organic compounds that are potentially harmful namely those compounds originating from shale formations (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates), fracturing fluids (e.g., quaternary ammonium biocides, 2-butoxyethanol) and downhole transformations of organic compounds (e.g., carbon disulfide, halogenated organic compounds). Removal of these compounds by FPW treatment processes is reviewed and potential and efficient abatement strategies are defined.

Potential impact of flowback water from hydraulic fracturing on agricultural soil quality: Metal/metalloid bioaccessibility, Microtox bioassay, and enzyme activities

Hydraulic fracturing has advanced the development of shale gas extraction, while inadvertent spills of flowback water may pose a risk to the surrounding environment due to its high salt content, metals/metalloids (As, Se, Fe and Sr), and organic additives. This study investigated the potential impact of flowback water on four representative soils from shale gas regions in Northeast China using synthetic flowback solutions. The compositions of the solutions were representative of flowback water arising at different stages after fracturing well establishment. The effects of solution composition of flowback water on soil ecosystem were assessed in terms of metal mobility and bioaccessibility, as well as biological endpoints using Microtox bioassay (Vibrio fischeri) and enzyme activity tests. After one-month artificial aging of the soils with various flowback solutions, the mobility and bioaccessibility of As(V) and Se(VI) decreased as the ionic strength of the flowback solutions increased. The results inferred a stronger binding affinity of As(V) and Se(VI) with the soils. Nevertheless, the soil toxicity to Vibrio fischeri only presented a moderate increase after aging, while dehydrogenase and phosphomonoesterase activities were significantly suppressed with increasing ionic strength of flowback solutions. On the contrary, polyacrylamide in the flowback solutions led to higher dehydrogenase activity. These results indicated that soil enzyme activities were sensitive to the composition of flowback solutions. A preliminary human health risk assessment related to As(V) suggested a low level of cancer risk through exposure via ingestion, while holistic assessment of environmental implications is required.

Association of groundwater constituents with topography and distance to unconventional gas wells in NE Pennsylvania

Recently we reported an association of certain diseases with unconventional gas development (UGD). The purpose of this study is to examine UGD's possible impacts on groundwater quality in northeastern Pennsylvania. In this study, we compared our groundwater data (Columbia 58 samples) with those published data from Cabot (1701 samples) and Duke University (150 samples). For each dataset, proportions of samples with elevated levels of dissolved constituents were compared among four groups, identified as upland far (i.e. ≥1km to the nearest UGD gas well), upland near (<1km), valley far (≥1km), and valley near (<1km) groups. The Columbia data do not show statistically significant differences among the 4 groups, probably due to the limited number of samples. In Duke samples, Ca and CI levels are significantly higher in the valley near group than in the valley far group. In the Cabot dataset, methane, Na, and Mn levels are significantly higher in valley far samples than in upland far samples. In valley samples, Ca, Cl, SO4, and Fe are significantly higher in the near group (i.e. <1km) than in the far group. The association of these constituents in valley groundwater with distance is observed for the first time using a large industry dataset. The increase may be caused by enhanced mixing of shallow and deep groundwater in valley, possibly triggered by UGD process. If persistent, these changes indicate potential for further impact on groundwater quality. Therefore, there is an urgent need to conduct more studies to investigate effects of UGD on water quality and possible health outcomes.
