Four-in-one multifunctional self-driven photoelectrocatalytic system for water purification: Organics degradation, U(VI) reduction, electricity generation and disinfection against bacteria

This study addresses the energy-intensive nature of conventional wastewater treatment processes and proposes a solution through the development of a green, low-energy, and multifunctional wastewater treatment technology. The research focuses on a multifunctional self-driven photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system, exploring its four-in-one applications in eliminating organic pollutants, reducing U(VI), generating electrical energy, and disinfecting pathogenic microorganisms. A TiO2-decorated carbon felt (CF@TiO2) cathode is synthesized to enhance interfacial charge transfer, with TiO2 coating improving surface binding sites (edge TiO and adsorbed -OH) for UO22+ adsorption and reduction. The self-driven PEC system, illuminated solely with simulated sunlight, exhibits remarkable efficiency in removing nearly 100 % of uranium within 0.5 h and simultaneously degrading 99.9 % of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 1.5 h, all while generating a maximum power output density (Pmax) of approximately 1065 μW·cm-2. The system demonstrates significant anti-interference properties across a wide pH range and coexisting ions. Moreover, 49.4 % of the fixed uranium on the cathode is reduced into U(IV) species, limiting its migration. The self-driven PEC system also excels in detoxifying various toxic organic compounds, including tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and oxytetracycline, and exhibits exceptional sterilization ability by disinfecting nearly 100 % of Escherichia coli within 0.5 h. This work presents an energy-saving, sustainable, and easily recyclable wastewater purification system with four-in-one capabilities, relying solely on sunlight for operation.

Typical antibiotic resistance genes and their association with driving factors in the coastal areas of Yangtze River Estuary

The massive use of antibiotics has led to the escalation of microbial resistance in aquatic environment, resulting in an increasing concern regarding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a serious threat to ecological safety and human health. In this study, surface water samples were collected at eight sampling sites along the Yangtze River Estuary. The seasonal and spatial distribution patterns of 10 antibiotics and target genes in two major classes (sulfonamides and tetracyclines) were analyzed. The findings indicated a high prevalence of sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance genes along the Yangtze River Estuary. Kruskal-Wallis analysis revealed significant seasonal variations in the abundance of all target genes. The accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes in the coastal area of the Yangtze River Estuary can be attributed to the influence of urban instream runoff and the discharge of effluents from wastewater treatment plants. ANISOM analysis indicated significant seasonal differences in the microbial community structure. VPA showed that environmental factors contribute the most to ARG variation. PLS-PM demonstrate that environmental factors and microbial communities pose direct effect to ARG variation. Analysis of driving factors influencing ARGs in this study may shed new insights into the mechanism of the maintenance and propagation of ARGs.

Bacterioplankton diversity and potential health risks in volcanic lakes: A study from Arxan Geopark, China

Bacterioplankton play a vital role in maintaining the functions and services of lake ecosystems. Understanding the diversity and distribution patterns of bacterioplankton, particularly the presence of potential pathogenic bacterial communities, is crucial for safeguarding human health. In this study, we employed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to investigate the diversity and geographic patterns of bacterioplankton communities, as well as potential pathogens, in eight volcanic lakes located in the Arxan UNESCO Global Geopark (in the Greater Khingan Mountains of China). Our results revealed that the bacterial communities primarily comprised Bacteroidota (45.3%), Proteobacteria (33.1%), and Actinobacteria (9.0%) at the phylum level. At the genus level, prominent taxa included Flavobacterium (31.5%), Acinetobacter (11.0%), Chryseobacterium (7.9%), and CL500-29 marine group (5.6%). Among the bacterioplankton, we identified 34 pathogen genera (165 amplicon sequence variants [ASVs]), with Acinetobacter (59.8%), Rahnella (18.3%), Brevundimonas (9.6%), and Pseudomonas (5.8%) being the most dominant. Our findings demonstrated distinct biogeographic patterns in the bacterial communities at the local scale, driven by a combination of dispersal limitation and environmental factors influenced by human activities. Notably, approximately 15.3% of the bacterioplankton reads in the Arxan lakes were identified as potential pathogens, underscoring the potential risks to public health in these popular tourist destinations. This study provides the first comprehensive insight into the diversity of bacterioplankton in mountain lake ecosystems affected by high tourist activity, laying the groundwork for effective control measures against bacterial pathogens.

Distinct dynamics in mountain watersheds: Exploring mercury and microplastic pollution-Unraveling the influence of atmospheric deposition, human activities, and hydrology

The intensification of human activities all around the globe has led to the spread of micropollutants in high-mountain freshwater environments. We therefore aimed to assess the geospatial distribution and determine the potential sources of (total-) mercury (THg) and microplastics (MPs) in mountain freshwater ecosystems. To do so, we analyzed THg and MP concentrations in brown trout, biofilm, and sediments from lotic and lentic ecosystems in the Pyrenees - all subjected to different types of human pressure. Additionally, we assessed the potential impacts of these pollutants on fish, and explored the bioindication capacity of brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and biofilm regarding THg and MP pollution. For the first time, we measured concentrations of MPs trapped in the matrix of freshwater biofilm. Our results suggest that THg in the Pyrenees might be explained by both legacy (regional) and distant sources, in combination with environmental characteristics such as the presence of peatlands or streamwater physicochemistry, while MPs in fish are linked to recent local pollution sources such as single-use plastics. In contrast, MPs in biofilm matrix and sediments indicate a combination of distant (i.e., atmospheric deposition) and recent local pollution sources. Moreover, hydrodynamics and plastic density likely control MP distribution in rivers. Based on Fulton's condition factor, we also found that higher THg concentrations caused a negative impact on fish health (K < 1), while no impact of MPs could be seen. Therefore, we suggest that brown trout and biofilm can serve as bioindicators of atmospheric deposition of THg in high-altitude lakes and that biofilm is a reliable bioindicator to assess MP pollution in remote environments. Brown trout may also act as a bioindicator of MP pollution, but only efficiently in more polluted areas.

Review on heavy metal contaminants in freshwater fish in South India: current situation and future perspective

The primary natural resource we use in our daily lives for a variety of activities is freshwater for drinking and various developmental goals. Furthermore, the pace of human population increase worldwide is rising rapidly and has a great impact on the Earth's natural resources. Natural water quality has diminished owing to various anthropogenic activities. Water is crucial to the life cycle. On the other hand, chemical and agricultural industries pollute heavy metals. Acute and chronic diseases caused by heavy metals, such as slow metabolism and damage to the gills and epithelial layer of fish species, are divided into two categories. Pollutants can also harm liver tissues and result in ulceration as well as diseases such as fin rot, tail rot, and gill disease. The most prevalent heavy metals are As, Cr, Pb, and Hg, which are systemic toxicants that affect human health. These metals are categorized as carcinogens by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the worldwide agency for cancer research because they cause organ damage even at low exposure levels. The focus of the current study is to review various freshwater sources of heavy metal pollution.

Biofilm community composition is changing in remote mountain lakes with a relative increase in potentially toxigenic algae

Mountain lakes provide clear drinking water to humankind but are strongly impacted by global change. Benthic biofilms are crucial for maintaining water quality in these oligotrophic lakes, yet little is known about the effects of global change on mountain biofilm communities. By combining analyses of metabarcoding data on 16S and 18S rRNA genes with climatic and environmental data, we investigated global change effects on the composition of biofilm prokaryotic and micro-eukaryotic assemblages in a five-year monitoring program of 26 Pyrenean lakes (2016-2020). Using time-decay relationships and within-lake dissimilarity modelling, we show that the composition of both prokaryotic and micro-eukaryotic biofilm communities significantly shifted and their biodiversity declined from 2016 to 2020. In particular, analyses of temporal trends with linear mixed models indicated an increase in the richness and relative abundance of cyanobacteria, including potentially toxigenic cyanobacteria, and a concomitant decrease in diatom richness and relative abundance. While these compositional shifts may be due to several drivers of global change acting simultaneously on mountain lake biota, water pH and hardness were, from our data, the main environmental variables associated with changes for both prokaryotic and micro-eukaryotic assemblages. Water pH and hardness increased in our lakes over the study period, and are known to increase in Pyrenean lakes due to the intensification of rock weathering as a result of climate change. Given predicted climate trends and if water pH and hardness do cause some changes in benthic biofilms, those changes might be further exacerbated in the future. Such biofilm compositional shifts may induce cascading effects in mountain food webs, threatening the resilience of the entire lake ecosystem. The rise in potentially toxigenic cyanobacteria also increases intoxication risks for humans, pets, wild animals, and livestock that use mountain lakes. Therefore, our study has implications for water quality, ecosystem health, public health, as well as local economies (pastoralism, tourism), and highlights the possible impacts of global change on mountain lakes.

Trend relationship between mountain normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and aerosol optical depth (AOD) across two decades: implication for water quality within the Lesotho Highlands, Drakensberg, South Africa

There are growing concerns on contribution of vegetation dynamics to atmospheric turbidity and quality of regional water towers. The study sought to determine the trends in the MODIS/TERRA-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and aerosol optical depth (AOD) for Lesotho Highland over 2000-2020. The predictive relationship between the two variables was also examined using regression analysis. Irrespective of yearly AOD patterns, the AOD showed biphasic patterns peaking between mid-winter to early spring (July-October) (highest) and autumn (Feb-April) (next highest), and lowest in the summer (Nov-January). The monthly NDVI was largest in January-March (summer-early fall) with smaller values in winter and spring. This seasonality can be related to the peak of anthropogenic biomass combustion during the winter and strong winds during the spring and early summer. The AOD relationship with NDVI showed quadratic patterns peaking and plunging with changes in season. About 30-80% (R² = 0.3-0.8%) changes in annual AOD from 2000 to 2020 were explainable by the dynamics of NDVI indicating that increased NDVI contributes to about a 50% decrease in AOD in the Lesotho Highlands. However, an outlier trend was observed in 2007 (R² = 13%). Incidences of high AOD in months of high NDVI may be indicative of traveling aerosols, i.e., aerosols from non-local sources/activity. On the other hand, high AOD in months of low NDVI implicates local aerosol sources. Trend relationship studies on vegetation loss and AOD in mountain areas of other regions could improve knowledge of contaminant dynamics and risk implications for downstream populations.

Occurrence Prediction of Riffle Beetles (Coleoptera: Elmidae) in a Tropical Andean Basin of Ecuador Using Species Distribution Models

Genera and species of Elmidae (riffle beetles) are sensitive to water pollution; however, in tropical freshwater ecosystems, their requirements regarding environmental factors need to be investigated. Species distribution models (SDMs) were established for five elmid genera in the Paute river basin (southern Ecuador) using the Random Forest (RF) algorithm considering environmental variables, i.e., meteorology, land use, hydrology, and topography. Each RF-based model was trained and optimised using cross-validation. Environmental variables that explained most of the Elmidae spatial variability were land use (i.e., riparian vegetation alteration and presence/absence of canopy), precipitation, and topography, mainly elevation and slope. The highest probability of occurrence for elmids genera was predicted in streams located within well-preserved zones. Moreover, specific ecological niches were spatially predicted for each genus. Macrelmis was predicted in the lower and forested areas, with high precipitation levels, towards the Amazon basin. Austrelmis was predicted to be in the upper parts of the basin, i.e., páramo ecosystems, with an excellent level of conservation of their riparian ecosystems. Austrolimnius and Heterelmis were also predicted in the upper parts of the basin but in more widespread elevation ranges, in the Heterelmis case, and even in some areas with a medium level of anthropisation. Neoelmis was predicted to be in the mid-region of the study basin in high altitudinal streams with a high degree of meandering. The main findings of this research are likely to contribute significantly to local conservation and restoration efforts being implemented in the study basin and could be extrapolated to similar eco-hydrological systems.

Hummingbird community structure and nectar resources modulate the response of interspecific competition to forest conversion

On-going land-use change has profound impacts on biodiversity by filtering species that cannot survive in disturbed landscapes and potentially altering biotic interactions. In particular, how land-use change reshapes biotic interactions remains an open question. Here, we used selectivity experiments with nectar feeders in natural and converted forests to test the direct and indirect effects of land-use change on resource competition in Andean hummingbirds along an elevational gradient. Selectivity was defined as the time hummingbirds spent at high resource feeders when feeders with both low and high resource values were offered in the presence of other hummingbird species. Selectivity approximates the outcome of interspecific competition (i.e., the resource intake across competing species); in the absence of competition, birds should exhibit higher selectivity. We evaluated the indirect effect of forest conversion on selectivity, as mediated by morphological dissimilarity and flower resource abundance, using structural equation models. We found that forest conversion influenced selectivity at low and mid-elevations, but the influence of morphological dissimilarity and resource availability on selectivity varied between these elevations. At mid-elevation, selectivity was more influenced by the presence of morphologically similar competitors than by resource abundance while at low-elevation resource abundance was a more important predictor of selectivity. Our results suggest that selectivity is influenced by forest conversion, but that the drivers of these changes vary across elevation, highlighting the importance of considering context-dependent variation in the composition of resources and competitors when studying competition.

Electrodeposition of Ag/ZIF-8-Modified Membrane for Water Remediation

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based membranes have been widely used in gas and liquid separation due to their porous structures and tunable compositions. Depending on the guest components, heterostructured MOFs can exhibit multiple functions. In the present work, we report a facile and rapid preparation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and silver nanoparticle incorporated ZIF-8 (Ag/ZIF-8)-based membranes on stainless-steel mesh (SSM) through a "green" electrodeposition method. The SSM was first coated with a Zn-plated layer which contains mainly zinc hydroxide nitrate (Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O) with a "leaf-like" morphology, providing anchoring points for the deposition of ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8. It takes only 10 min to prepare a uniform coating of Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O in aqueous conditions without the use of a strong base; this is by far the most efficient way of making zinc hydroxide nitrate nanocrystals. Following a similar electrodeposition approach, ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM can be prepared within 20 min by applying a small current. The encapsulation of Ag does not alter the chemical composition nor the crystal structure of ZIF-8. The resulting ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM have been tested for their effectiveness for rhodamine B dye removal in a fast vacuum filtration setting. Additionally, growth of E. coli was significantly inhibited after overnight incubation with Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM. Overall, we demonstrate a fast synthesis procedure to make ZIF-8 and Ag/ZIF-8-coated SSM membranes for organic dye removal with excellent antimicrobial activity.

Multi stress system: Microplastics in freshwater and their effects on host microbiota

Microplastics are persistent and complex contaminants that have recently been found in freshwater systems, raising concerns about their presence in aquatic organisms. Plastics tend to be seen as an inert material; however, it is not well known if exposure to plastics for a prolonged time, in combination with organic chemicals, causes organism mortality. Ingestion of microplastics in combination with another pollutant may affect a host organism's fitness by altering the host microbiome. In this study, we investigated how microplastics interact with other pollutants in this multi-stress system, and whether they have a synergistic impact on the mortality of an aquatic organism and its microbiome. We used wild water boatmen Hemiptera (Corixidae) found at lake Erken located in east-central Sweden in a fully factorial two-way microcosm experiment designed with polystyrene microspheres and a commonly used detergent. The microplastic-detergent interaction is manifested as a significant increase in mortality compared to the other treatments at 48 h of exposure. The diversity of the microbial communities in the water was significantly affected by the combined treatment of microplastics and the detergent while the microbial communities in the host were affected by the treatments with microplastics and the detergent alone. Changes in relative abundance in Gammaproteobacteria (family Enterobacteriaceae), were observed in the perturbed treatments mostly associated with the presence of the detergent. This confirms that microplastics can interact with detergents having toxic effects on wild water boatmen. Furthermore, microplastics may impact wild organisms via changes in their microbial communities.

Scientists' warning of threats to mountains

Mountains are an essential component of the global life-support system. They are characterized by a rugged, heterogenous landscape with rapidly changing environmental conditions providing myriad ecological niches over relatively small spatial scales. Although montane species are well adapted to life at extremes, they are highly vulnerable to human derived ecosystem threats. Here we build on the manifesto 'World Scientists' Warning to Humanity', issued by the Alliance of World Scientists, to outline the major threats to mountain ecosystems. We highlight climate change as the greatest threat to mountain ecosystems, which are more impacted than their lowland counterparts. We further discuss the cascade of "knock-on" effects of climate change such as increased UV radiation, altered hydrological cycles, and altered pollution profiles; highlighting the biological and socio-economic consequences. Finally, we present how intensified use of mountains leads to overexploitation and abstraction of water, driving changes in carbon stock, reducing biodiversity, and impacting ecosystem functioning. These perturbations can provide opportunities for invasive species, parasites and pathogens to colonize these fragile habitats, driving further changes and losses of micro- and macro-biodiversity, as well further impacting ecosystem services. Ultimately, imbalances in the normal functioning of mountain ecosystems will lead to changes in vital biological, biochemical, and chemical processes, critically reducing ecosystem health with widespread repercussions for animal and human wellbeing. Developing tools in species/habitat conservation and future restoration is therefore essential if we are to effectively mitigate against the declining health of mountains.

The effects of road salt (NaCl), predation, and competition on the growth and community interactions of spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) and wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus)

Road deicing salts are frequently used in northern regions of the world during the winter and early spring months. As a result, a significant portion of road runoff into surrounding aquatic habitats contains road deicing salts. Previous studies found road salt contaminations in vernal pools that pond-breeding amphibians commonly use, including spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) and wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus). Studies have examined the impact of road salt on both amphibian species, but to our knowledge no previous studies have examined how road salt impacts the interspecific competition between both amphibians. We hypothesized that road salt would negatively impact growth and survivorship of both amphibian species. During the spring and summer of 2017, we conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment in which we created eight experimental conditions with three main factors: presence/absence of NaCl (1000 mg/L Cl^-), presence/absence of interspecific competition between the two amphibian species (A. maculatum and L. sylvaticus), and presence/absence of predatory dragonfly larvae (Family Libellulidae). Our experiment revealed that salt delayed hatching and increased deformity in spotted salamander hatchlings. Additionally, salt reduced salamander survivorship by 62% and frog survivorship by 30%. Wood frog tadpoles and road salt interacted to diminish salamander survivorship a further 80% beyond salt alone, likely through an increase in interspecific competition. Road salt increased the larval period of salamanders and decreased the proportion metamorphosed by the end of the experiment. Dragonfly larvae reduced salamander survivorship by 35%, whereas they increased wood frog tadpole development rates. Dragonfly larvae and salt interacted to alter tadpole denticle size, with salt negating the impact of dragonfly larvae. Thus, we found that salt interfered with aquatic predatory chemical cues. Overall, the results of this study suggest that management strategies should be implemented in order to reduce the impact of road salts on freshwater aquatic ecosystems.

Planktonic microbial communities from microbialite-bearing lakes sampled along a salinity-alkalinity gradient

Continental freshwater systems are particularly vulnerable to environmental variation. Climate change-induced desertification and the anthropogenic exploitation of hydric resources result in the progressive evaporation and salinization of inland water bodies in many areas of the globe. However, how this process impacts microbial communities and their activities in biogeochemical cycles is poorly known. Here, we take a space-for-time substitution approach and characterize the prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities of two planktonic cell-size fractions (0.2-5 μm and 5-30 μm) from lakes of diverse trophic levels sampled along a salinity-alkalinity gradient located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). We applied a 16S/18S rRNA gene metabarcoding strategy to determine the microbial community composition of 54 samples from 12 different lakes, from the low-salinity lake Zirahuén to the hypersaline residual ponds of Rincón de Parangueo. Except for systems at both extremes of the salinity gradient, most lakes along the evaporation trend bear actively forming microbialites, which harbor microbial communities clearly distinct from those of plankton. Several lakes were sampled in winter and late spring and the crater lakes Alchichica and Atexcac were sampled across the water column. Physicochemical parameters related to salinity-alkalinity were the most influential drivers of microbial community structure whereas trophic status, depth, or season were less important. Our results suggest that climate change and anthropogenic-induced hydric deficit could significantly affect microbial communities, potentially altering ecosystem functioning.

Environment is associated with chytrid infection and skin microbiome richness on an amphibian rich island (Taiwan)

Growing evidence suggests that the origins of the panzootic amphibian pathogens Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) are in Asia. In Taiwan, an island hotspot of high amphibian diversity, no amphibian mass mortality events linked to Bd or Bsal have been reported. We conducted a multi-year study across this subtropical island, sampling 2517 individuals from 30 species at 34 field sites, between 2010 and 2017, and including 171 museum samples collected between 1981 and 2009. We analyzed the skin microbiome of 153 samples (6 species) from 2017 in order to assess any association between the amphibian skin microbiome and the probability of infection amongst different host species. We did not detect Bsal in our samples, but found widespread infection by Bd across central and northern Taiwan, both taxonomically and spatially. Museum samples show that Bd has been present in Taiwan since at least 1990. Host species, geography (elevation), climatic conditions and microbial richness were all associated with the prevalence of infection. Host life-history traits, skin microbiome composition and phylogeny were associated with lower prevalence of infection for high altitude species. Overall, we observed low prevalence and burden of infection in host populations, suggesting that Bd is enzootic in Taiwan where it causes subclinical infections. While amphibian species in Taiwan are currently threatened by habitat loss, our study indicates that Bd is in an endemic equilibrium with the populations and species we investigated. However, ongoing surveillance of the infection is warranted, as changing environmental conditions may disturb the currently stable equilibrium.

Exposure to global change pressures and potential impacts on ecosystem services of mountain lakes in the European Alps

Mountain lakes are increasingly affected by global change pressures. While there is growing evidence of impacts on ecosystem functioning, few studies considered changes in ecosystem services (ES). This study aimed (1) to examine the exposure of small and natural mountain lakes in the European Alps to global change pressures and (2) to estimate potential impacts on six relevant ES considering future climate projections and potential changes in water use. For 2455 lakes, we mapped the level of exposure to global change pressures, including climate change, atmospheric nutrient deposition, and anthropogenic activities (e.g., water use). Our results indicate that more than half of the Alpine mountain lakes feature a considerable level of exposure to global change. Hotspot analysis revealed spatial clusters of lakes with above-average exposure (23.7% of all lakes), mostly located in the central part of the Alps, while lakes with below-average exposure level prevailed in the south-western (19.3%) and eastern parts (10.6%). For 15 case study lakes, we quantified potential impacts on six key ES. The results revealed, in particular, potential negative effects on maintaining habitat and populations as well as aesthetic value, but contrastingly, also some positive effects for outdoor recreation, research and education. Our findings suggest the need for a comprehensive integration of mountain lakes into current management and policy frameworks to ensure the ecological integrity and ES provision of mountain lakes. Interdisciplinary mountain lake research will be important to overcome uncertainties related to the coupling of limnological parameters and ES indicators.

Anthropogenic impacts on antibiotic resistance genes and their hosts from pristine to urban river using metagenomic and binning approaches

Driven by anthropogenic pressure, Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) could transfer from the environmental resistome into human commensals or even pathogens. The transport of ARGs through aquatic ecosystems is crucial and has attracted attention. Here, we employed metagenomic and binning to compare ARGs profiles, their co-occurrence with metal resistance genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and their hosts between pristine and anthropogenic influenced rivers and explore the ecological mechanisms underlying the dissemination of ARGs induced by anthropogenic activities. The significantly increased relative abundance of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramins, vancomycin, β-lactam and sulfonamide resistance genes along the environmental gradient from pristine to polluted sediments implied that anthropogenic impact aided the emergence and dissemination of certain ARGs. At the lower reach of the Ba River, the higher ratios for contigs carrying more than one ARG suggested that anthropogenic pollution favored the co-occurrence of multiple ARGs. Anthropogenic pressures also increased the relative abundance of advantaged hosts, including Chloroflexi, Firmicutes and Euryarchaeota. At the lower reach of Ba River, Romboutsia timonensis carrying multiple ARGs and ICEs were successfully recovered, posing a serious threat to human health by affecting the metabolism of gut microbiomes. And Methanothrix soehngenii affiliated to archaea carrying multiple ARGs, MRGs and ICEs were also recovered from the lower Ba River. The partial least squares path modeling revealed that MGEs were the most predominant factors inducing the ARG profiles, and the antibiotic resistance could be enriched by co-transfer with MRGs. Furthermore, environmental factors could impact the ARG profiles indirectly by first influencing the ARGs' hosts.

Microplastics ingestion induces plasticity in digestive morphology in larvae of Xenopus laevis

Global changes in temperature, predator introductions, and pollution might challenge animals by altering food conditions. A fast-growing source of environmental pollution are microplastics. If ingested with the natural food source, microplastics act as artificial fibers that reduce food quality by decreasing nutrient and energy density with possible ramifications for growth and development. Animals might cope with altered food conditions with digestive plasticity. We examined experimentally whether larvae of the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) exhibit digestive morphology plasticity (i.e., gut length, mass, and diameter) in response to microplastics ingestion. As natural systems contain non-digestible particles similar in size and shape to microplastics, we included cellulose as a natural fiber control group. Gut length and mass increased in response to microplastics and cellulose ingestion indicating that both types of fibers induced digestive plasticity. Body mass and body condition were similar across experimental groups, indicating that larvae fully compensated for low nutrient and energy density by developing longer intestines. The ability of a species to respond plastically to environmental variation, as X. laevis responded, indicates that this species might have the potential to cope with new conditions during global change, although it is uncertain whether this potential may be reduced in a multi-stressor environment.

Coexistence of antibiotic resistance genes, fecal bacteria, and potential pathogens in anthropogenically impacted water

Microbial indicators are often used to monitor microbial safety of aquatic environments. However, information regarding the correlation between microbial indicators and ecotoxicological factors such as potential pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in anthropogenically impacted waters remains highly limited. Here, we investigated the bacterial community composition, potential pathogens, ARGs diversity, ARG hosts, and horizontal gene transfer (HGT) potential in urban river and wastewater samples from Chaohu Lake Basin using 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing. The composition of the microbial community and potential pathogens differed significantly in wastewater and river water samples, and the total relative abundance of fecal indicator bacteria was positively correlated with the total relative abundance of potential pathogens (p < 0.001 and Pearson's r = 0.758). Network analysis indicated that partial ARG subtypes such as dfrE, sul2, and PmrE were significantly correlated with indicator bacteria (p < 0.05 and Pearson's r > 0.6). Notably, Klebsiella was the indicator bacteria significantly correlated with 4 potential pathogens and 14 ARG subtypes. ARGs coexisting with mobile gene elements were mainly found in Thauera, Pseudomonas, Escherichia, and Acinetobacter. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) can be used to conduct preliminary surveys of environmental samples to access potential health risks, thereby facilitating water resources management.

Pilot monitoring scheme of water pollutants in Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas

In this study we have established a monitoring scheme to determine the presence and distribution of widely used pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organophosphate esters (OPEs) and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water bodies from Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) from Spain. The monitoring scheme included the georeferenced sampling of rocky mountain, Atlantic forest, riparian forest, Mediterranean forest, agricultural, inland aquatic and coastal aquatic IBAs, with the aim to evaluate the impact of widely used chemicals in those aquatic resources. Water samples were extracted using a generic solid-phase extraction protocol and analyzed by 3 analytical methods based on liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Quality parameters such as compound recovery, intra and inter-day variation, linearity and limits of detection were calculated in order to validate the methods. In addition, the ionization conditions and the optimization of the most appropriate transitions permitted unequivocal identification. Once the sampling and analytical procedure was set-up, 59 target compounds were monitored in 63 samples. Pharmaceutical, followed by pesticides, OPEs and PFAS were widespread along all IBAs studied at concentrations from 0.5 to 41083 ng/L. Overall, this study highlights the need to monitor the presence of contaminants in areas of high ecological interest to contribute to pollution control and mitigation towards protection of biodiversity.

The role of abiotic variables in an emerging global amphibian fungal disease in mountains

The emergence of the chytridiomycete fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), causing the disease chytridiomycosis, has caused collapse of amphibian communities in numerous mountain systems. The health of amphibians and of mountain freshwater habitats they inhabit is also threatened by ongoing changes in environmental and anthropogenic factors such as climate, hydrology, and pollution. Climate change is causing more extreme climatic events, shifts in ice occurrence, and changes in the timing of snowmelt and pollutant deposition cycles. All of these factors impact both pathogen and host, and disease dynamics. Here we review abiotic variables, known to control Bd occurrence and chytridiomycosis severity, and discuss how climate change may modify them. We propose two main categories of abiotic variables that may alter Bd distribution, persistence, and physiology: 1) climate and hydrology (temperature, precipitation, hydrology, ultraviolet radiation (UVR); and, 2) water chemistry (pH, salinity, pollution). For both categories, we identify topics for further research. More studies on the relationship between global change, pollution and pathogens in complex landscapes, such as mountains, are needed to allow for accurate risk assessments for freshwater ecosystems and resulting impacts on wildlife and human health. Our review emphasizes the importance of using data of higher spatiotemporal resolution and uniform abiotic metrics in order to better compare study outcomes. Fine-scale temperature variability, especially of water temperature, variability of moisture conditions and water levels, snow, ice and runoff dynamics should be assessed as abiotic variables shaping the mountain habitat of pathogen and host. A better understanding of hydroclimate and water chemistry variables, as co-factors in disease, will increase our understanding of chytridiomycosis dynamics.

Long-Term Land-Use/Land-Cover Change Increased the Landscape Heterogeneity of a Fragmented Temperate Forest in Mexico

The temperate forests of northern Mexico possess a great diversity of unique and endemic species, with the greatest associations of pine-oak in the planet occurring within them. However, the ecosystems in this region had experienced an accelerated fragmentation process in the past decades. This study described and quantified the landscape fragmentation level of a degraded watershed located in this region. For that, data from the Landsat series from 1990, 2005 and 2017, classified with the Support Vector Machine method, were used. The landscape structure was analyzed based on six metrics applied at both, the landscape and class levels. Results show considerable gains in surface area for the land use land cover change (LULC) of secondary forest while the Primary Forest (PF) lost 18.1% of its area during 1990–2017. The PF increased its number of patches from 7075 to 12,318, increased its patch density (PD) from 53.51 to 58.46 # of patches/100 ha, and reduced its average patch size from 39.21 to 15.05 ha. This made the PF the most fragmented LULC from the 5 LULCs evaluated. In this study, strong fluctuations in edge density and PD were registered, which indicates the forests of northern Mexico have experienced a reduction in their productivity and have been subjected to a continuous degradation process due to disturbances such as fires, clandestine and non-properly controlled logging, among others.

Recent progress in green and biopolymer based photocatalysts for the abatement of aquatic pollutants

Enormous research studies on the abatement of anthropogenic aquatic pollutants including organic dyes, pesticides, cosmetics, antibiotics and inorganic species by using varieties of semiconductor photocatalysts have been reported in recent decades. Besides, many of these photocatalysts suffer in real applications owing to their high production cost and low stability. In many cases, the photocatalysts themselves are being considered as secondary pollutants. To eliminate these drawbacks, the green synthesized photocatalysts and the use of biopolymers as photocatalyst supports are considered in recent years. In this context, recent developments in green synthesized metals, metal oxides, other metal compounds, and carbon based photocatalysts in water purification are critically reviewed. Furthermore, the pivotal role of biopolymers including chitin, chitosan, cellulose, natural gum, hydroxyapatite, alginate in photocatalytic removal of aquatic pollutants is comprehensively reviewed. The presence of functional groups, electron trapping ability, biocompatibility, natural occurrence, and low production cost are the major reasons for using biopolymers in photocatalysis. Finally, the summary and conclusion are presented along with existing challenges in this research area.

Recent Achievements in Electrochemical and Surface Plasmon Resonance Aptasensors for Mycotoxins Detection

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of fungi that contaminate agriculture products. Their release in the environment can cause severe damage to human health. Aptasensors are compact analytical devices that are intended for the fast and reliable detection of various species able to specifically interact with aptamers attached to the transducer surface. In this review, assembly of electrochemical and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) aptasensors are considered with emphasis on the mechanism of signal generation. Moreover, the properties of mycotoxins and the aptamers selected for their recognition are briefly considered. The analytical performance of biosensors developed within last three years makes it possible to determine mycotoxin residues in water and agriculture/food products on the levels below their maximal admissible concentrations. Requirements for the development of sample treatment and future trends in aptasensors are also discussed.

Quantifying Ecosystem Services of High Mountain Lakes across Different Socio-Ecological Contexts

Mountain lakes are highly sensitive to global change, requiring sustainable management strategies that support crucial ecosystem services (ES). However, small mountain lakes are rarely in the focus of ES assessments, and indicators are potentially lacking. Therefore, this study aimed at comprehensively assessing key ES of 15 study lakes located in two regions in the European Alps. We involved local stakeholders and experts to identify important ES. We quantified eight ES in non-monetary terms, using 29 indicators based on limnological, spatial and socio-economic data. Finally, we evaluated ES in relation to the socio-ecological context of the study lakes. The most important ES included surface water for non-drinking purposes, maintaining populations and habitats, outdoor recreation, aesthetic value, entertainment and representation, scientific research, education as well as existence, option, or bequest value. Quantitative results indicate varying levels of ES across the study lakes. Based on 12 different socio-ecological variables, we identified four groups of lakes differing also in five ES. Maintaining populations and habitats, aesthetic value as well as existence, option or bequest value were rather independent from the socio-ecological context. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of ES of mountain lakes, also supporting the development of sustainable management strategies in mountain regions.

“A Gem among the Rocks”—Identifying and Measuring Visual Preferences for Mountain Lakes

The high visual quality of lakes bolsters aesthetic and recreational experiences, but little is known about the specific visual preferences related to mountain lakes. This study therefore aimed at assessing people’s preferences on visual characteristics of mountain lakes using an online questionnaire. Adopting a qualitative approach, we first identified major recognised characteristics of mountain lakes, i.e., respondents indicated that mountain lakes are typically small-sized lakes with clear, cold and blue water and are embedded in a natural mountain landscape. Then, we used different picture sets related to water clarity, water colour, presence of algae, lake shore and surrounding land cover to quantify preferences. Our results indicated a clear preference for blue, clear water and the absence of algae as well as large rocks at the lake shore and forest around the lake. In particular, preferences related to visual water characteristics were highly homogeneous across socio-cultural groups and confirmed previous findings. To illustrate the applicability of our findings, we integrated our results with spatial and limnological data to quantify aesthetic values for four selected study lakes in the European Alps. Finally, we discuss our findings in the context of increasing demand for nature-based experiences and the implications for decision-making.

Studies on heavy metals and fish health indicators in Malapterurus electricus from Lekki Lagoon, Lagos, Nigeria

The aquatic ecosystem is constantly being disturbed by rising levels of different classes of pollutants of human origin in the form of urban, agricultural and industrial discharges. In this study, the health of fish Malapterurus electricus was examined, to serve as a reflection of the impact of anthropogenic disturbances in the Lekki lagoon. Eighty six samples of the fish were analysed for parasitic infections, heavy metals, microorganisms in their internal and external body parts while the proximate composition and fish condition factor were also determined using conventional methods. One parasite species, a cestode Electrotaenia malapteruri was found to infect the fish. Total parasite load was eighty five with a total prevalence of infection of 36%. Elements detected in sediment were of the order of Al>Fe>Mn>Pb>Cr>Zn>Cd>Ba>Cu>Ni while in water, it is Mn>Fe>Zn>Ba>Cd>Cr>Al>Cu>Ni>Pb. Metals analysed in the fish tissues were generally low and below regulatory limits. In the proximate analysis, moisture content has a value of 80.7%, while ash content had a value of 1.26%. Eight bacterial and two fungal species were isolated from the fish. The condition factor of fish varied between 1 and 2. The study provides valuable information for monitoring and management of heavy metal pollution in the aquatic ecosystem.

The role of warm, dry summers and variation in snowpack on phytoplankton dynamics in mountain lakes

Climate change is altering biogeochemical, metabolic, and ecological functions in lakes across the globe. Historically, mountain lakes in temperate regions have been unproductive because of brief ice-free seasons, a snowmelt-driven hydrograph, cold temperatures, and steep topography with low vegetation and soil cover. We tested the relative importance of winter and summer weather, watershed characteristics, and water chemistry as drivers of phytoplankton dynamics. Using boosted regression tree models for 28 mountain lakes in Colorado, we examined regional, intraseasonal, and interannual drivers of variability in chlorophyll a as a proxy for lake phytoplankton. Phytoplankton biomass was inversely related to the maximum snow water equivalent (SWE) of the previous winter, as others have found. However, even in years with average SWE, summer precipitation extremes and warming enhanced phytoplankton biomass. Peak seasonal phytoplankton biomass coincided with the warmest water temperatures and lowest nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios. Although links between snowpack, lake temperature, nutrients, and organic-matter dynamics are increasingly recognized as critical drivers of change in high-elevation lakes, our results highlight the additional influence of summer conditions on lake productivity in response to ongoing changes in climate. Continued changes in the timing, type, and magnitude of precipitation in combination with other global-change drivers (e.g., nutrient deposition) will affect production in mountain lakes, potentially shifting these historically oligotrophic lakes toward new ecosystem states. Ultimately, a deeper understanding of these drivers and pattern at multiple scales will allow us to anticipate ecological consequences of global change better.

Sediment Bacterial Community Structure Under the Influence of Different Domestic Sewage Types

Sediment bacterial communities are critical to the biogeochemical cycle in river ecosystems, but our understanding of the relationship between sediment bacterial communities and their specific input streams in rivers remains insufficient. In this study, we analyzed the sediment bacterial community structure in a local river receiving discharge of urban domestic sewage by applying Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the bacterial communities of sediments samples of different pollution types had similar dominant phyla, mainly Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Firmicutes, but their relative abundances were different. Moreover, there were great differences at the genus level. For example, the genus Bacillus showed statistically significant differences in the hotel site. The clustering of bacterial communities at various sites and the dominant families (i.e., Nocardioidaceae, and Sphingomonadaceae) observed in the residential quarter differed from other sites. This result suggested that environmentally induced species sorting greatly influenced the sediment bacterial community composition. The bacterial cooccurrence patterns showed that the river bacteria had a nonrandom modular structure. Microbial taxonomy from the same module had strong ecological links (such as the nitrogenium cycle and degradation of organic pollutants). Additionally, PICRUSt metabolic inference analysis showed the most important function of river bacterial communities under the influence of different types of domestic sewage was metabolism (e.g., genes related to xenobiotic degradation predominated in residential quarter samples). In general, our results emphasize that the adaptive changes and interactions in the bacterial community structure of river sediment represent responses to different exogenous pollution sources.

Stochastic determination of the spatial variation of potentially pathogenic bacteria communities in a large subtropical river

Understanding the composition and assembly mechanism of waterborne pathogen is essential for preventing the pathogenic infection and protecting the human health. Here, based on 16S rRNA sequencing, we investigated the composition and spatial variation of potentially pathogenic bacteria from different sections of the Pearl River, the most important source of water for human in Southern China. The results showed that the potential pathogen communities consisted of 6 phyla and 64 genera, covering 11 categories of potential pathogens mainly involving animal parasites or symbionts (AniP), human pathogens all (HumPA), and intracellular parasites (IntCelP). Proteobacteria (75.87%) and Chlamydiae (20.56%) were dominant at the phylum level, and Acinetobacter (35.01%) and Roseomonas (8.24%) were dominant at the genus level. Multivariate analysis showed that the potential pathogenic bacterial community was significantly different among the four sections in the Pearl River. Both physicochemical factors (e.g., NO₃-N, and suspended solids) and land use (e.g., urban land and forest) significantly shaped the pathogen community structure. However, spatial effects contributed more to the variation of pathogen community based on variation partitioning and path analysis. Null model based normalized stochasticity ratio analysis further indicated that the stochastic process rather than deterministic process dominated the assembly mechanisms by controlling the spatial patterns of potential pathogens. In conclusion, high-throughput sequencing shows great potential for monitoring the potential pathogens, and provided more comprehensive information on the potentially pathogenic community. Our study highlighted the importance of considering the influences of dispersal-related processes in future risk assessments for the prevention and control of pathogenic bacteria.

From Laboratory Tests to the Ecoremedial System: The Importance of Microorganisms in the Recovery of PPCPs-Disturbed Ecosystems

The presence of a wide variety of emerging pollutants in natural water resources is an important global water quality challenge. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are known as emerging contaminants, widely used by modern society. This objective ensures availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, according to the 2030 Agenda. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) do not always mitigate the presence of these emerging contaminants in effluents discharged into the environment, although the removal efficiency of WWTP varies based on the techniques used. This main subject is framed within a broader environmental paradigm, such as the transition to a circular economy. The research and innovation within the WWTP will play a key role in improving the water resource management and its surrounding industrial and natural ecosystems. Even though bioremediation is a green technology, its integration into the bio-economy strategy, which improves the quality of the environment, is surprisingly rare if we compare to other corrective techniques (physical and chemical). This work carries out a bibliographic review, since the beginning of the 21st century, on the biological remediation of some PPCPs, focusing on organisms (or their by-products) used at the scale of laboratory or scale-up. PPCPs have been selected on the basics of their occurrence in water resources. The data reveal that, despite the advantages that are associated with bioremediation, it is not the first option in the case of the recovery of systems contaminated with PPCPs. The results also show that fungi and bacteria are the most frequently studied microorganisms, with the latter being more easily implanted in complex biotechnological systems (78% of bacterial manuscripts vs. 40% fungi). A total of 52 works has been published while using microalgae and only in 7% of them, these organisms were used on a large scale. Special emphasis is made on the advantages that are provided by biotechnological systems in series, as well as on the need for eco-toxicological control that is associated with any process of recovery of contaminated systems.

Ecosystem services research in mountainous regions: A systematic literature review on current knowledge and research gaps

Mountain ecosystem services (MES) can provide a wide range of benefits for human well-being, including provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural services. This systematic review work analyzed existed knowledge and research gaps on MES at the global level. The study used databases of science direct, Scopus and google scholar using searching, appraisal, synthesis, and analysis (SALSA) framework. Using specific keywords for the searching engine, the number of publications linked with MES were about 1252 which published between 1992 and June 2019. But, only 74 publications fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The analysis highlighted the existence of gaps in the literature including case studies from a limited geographical areas, focus on regulating and provisioning services, and lack of studies that explore the kinds of interlink between ecosystem services, and occurrence of limitation linked with data and methodology. From the 74 publications used for analysis, only seven of them were addressed mainly trade-offs and synergies, but most of them focus on quantification, qualification and economic valuation of the services. From the total case studies, the services addressed were summed up to 317 services, and the services such as climate regulation, food and fodder, fresh water, recreation and ecotourism, and erosion regulation studied more. On the contrary, photosynthesis, ornamental resources, net primary production, disease regulation, genetic resources, water purification and waste treatments were the least studied. Therefore, future research works should focus on mountainous areas of no and least studied of its ecosystem services. Critical studies are also required that indicate the link between a human being with MES, the trade-offs and synergies between MES and the influence of human beings on the quality and accessibility of ecosystem services. Besides, priority should be given by researches for methodological development and proposing management option for the mountain ecosystem and resource.

Biodiversity loss, emerging pathogens and human health risks

Outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases are occurring with increasing frequency and consequences, including wildlife diseases and zoonoses. Those have potentially long-lasting effects on human and wildlife populations, with inevitable direct and indirect effects on ecosystems. The intensifying emergence of infectious pathogens has many underlying reasons, all driven by the growing anthropogenic impact on nature. Intensifying pathogen emergence can be attributed to climate change, biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and an increasing rate of wildlife-human contacts. All of these are caused by synergies between persisting intense poverty and a growing human population. Improved global management of the human-driven biological degradation and international dispersal processes that exacerbate those pandemic threats are now long overdue. It is vital that we act decisively in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis to radically change how we collectively manage the planet as a whole.

Chemical composition of food induces plasticity in digestive morphology in larvae of Rana temporaria

Food conditions are changing due to anthropogenic activities and natural sources and thus, many species are exposed to new challenges. Animals might cope with altered quantitative and qualitative composition [i.e. variable protein, nitrogen (N) and energy content] of food by exhibiting trophic and digestive plasticity. We examined experimentally whether tadpoles of the common frog (Rana temporaria) exhibit phenotypic plasticity of the oral apparatus and intestinal morphology when raised on a diet of either low (i.e. Spirulina algae) or high protein, N and energy content (i.e. Daphnia pulex). Whereas intestinal morphology was highly plastic, oral morphology did not respond plastically to different chemical compositions of food. Tadpoles that were fed food with low protein and N content and low-energy density developed significantly longer guts and a larger larval stomachs than tadpoles raised on high protein, N and an energetically dense diet, and developed a different intestinal surface morphology. Body sizes of the treatment groups were similar, indicating that tadpoles fully compensated for low protein, N and energy diet by developing longer intestines. The ability of a species, R. temporaria, to respond plastically to environmental variation indicates that this species might have the potential to cope with new conditions during climate change.

Variability of Water Transit Time Distributions at the Strengbach Catchment (Vosges Mountains, France) Inferred Through Integrated Hydrological Modeling and Particle Tracking Algorithms

The temporal variability of transit-time distributions (TTDs) and residence-time distributions (RTDs) has received particular attention recently, but such variability has barely been studied using distributed hydrological modeling. In this study, a low-dimensional integrated hydrological model is run in combination with particle-tracking algorithms to investigate the temporal variability of TTDs, RTDs, and StorAge Selection (SAS) functions in the small, mountainous Strengbach watershed belonging to the French network of critical-zone observatories. The particle-tracking algorithms employed rely upon both forward and backward formulations that are specifically developed to handle time-variable velocity fields and evaluate TTDs and RTDs under transient hydrological conditions. The model is calibrated using both traditional streamflow measurements and magnetic resonance sounding (MRS)—which is sensitive to the subsurface water content—and then verified over a ten-year period. The results show that the mean transit time is rather short, at 150–200 days, and that the TTDs and RTDs are not greatly influenced by water storage within the catchment. This specific behavior is mainly explained by the small size of the catchment and its small storage capacity, a rapid flow mainly controlled by gravity along steep slopes, and climatic features that keep the contributive zone around the stream wet all year long.

Occurrence of organochlorine compounds in fish from freshwater environments of the central Andes, Argentina

The Central Andes region is considered an area of high environmental relevance in South America and it is rich in glaciers, which are the main fresh water sources and reservoirs of the region. The presence of organochlorine compounds (OCs) is an environmental threat due to their persistence and adverse effects on wildlife and humans. The levels of OCs, such as chlordane compounds (CHLs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), were determined in muscle and liver tissues of fish and in sediments collected from different sites of the central Andes: the Mendoza River and the Yaucha River (rainbow trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Carrizal Dam (silverside: Odontesthes bonariensis). Regardless of studied site and fish tissue, the general OC trend was: DDTs > PCBs > HCHs > CHLs > HCB. The results showed clear geographic distribution patterns for DDTs. Among the sampling sites, silverside fish showed the highest average load of DDTs (614 and 867 ng g^-1 lw in muscle and liver tissues, respectively). Based on the biota-sediment bioaccumulation factor (BSAF), both rainbow trout and silverside fish showed comparable capability to accumulate p,p'-DDT in their tissues. Intraspecific correlational analysis showed that CB-138 in muscle and p,p'-DDT in liver were clearly correlated with the lipid content in silverside specimens, which highlights the relevance of taking into account the fat content and the type of target tissues.

Effects of pollution on freshwater aquatic organisms

This paper presents the reviews of scientific papers published in 2018 issues on the effects of anthropogenic pollution on the aquatic organisms dwelling in freshwater ecosystem at global scale. The first part of the study provides the summary of relevant literature reviews followed by field and survey based studies. The second part is based on categories of different classes/sources of pollutants which affect freshwater organism. This is composed of several sections including metals and metalloids, wastewater and effluents, sediments, nutrients, pharmaceuticals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, flame retardants, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs, emerging contaminants, pesticides, herbicides, and endocrine disruptors. The final part of the study highlights the reviews of published research work on new pollutants such as microplastics and engineered nanoparticles which affect the freshwater organisms. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Heavy metals concentrations should be assessed at nano-scale in aquatic environment. Air pollutants could have long-term effects on freshwater ecosystem. Future studies should focus on bioremediations of freshwater pollution.

Biological Concepts for the Control of Aquatic Zoosporic Diseases

Aquatic zoosporic diseases are threatening global biodiversity and ecosystem services, as well as economic activities. Current means of controlling zoosporic diseases are restricted primarily to chemical treatments, which are usually harmful or likely to be ineffective in the long term. Furthermore, some of these chemicals have been banned due to adverse effects. As a result, there is a need for alternative methods with minimal side-effects on the ecosystem or environment. Here, we integrate existing knowledge of three poorly interconnected areas of disease research - amphibian conservation, aquaculture, and plankton ecology - and arrange it into seven biological concepts to control zoosporic diseases. These strategies may be less harmful and more sustainable than chemical approaches. However, more research is needed before safe application is possible.

Anthropogenic impacts in the Changbai Mountain region of NE China over the last 150 years: geochemical records of peat and altitude effects

Geochemical records from peatlands are important tools for the interpretation of environmental signals preserved in the peat and the understanding anthropogenic impacts on remote mountain regions. In this paper, six ²¹⁰Pb-dated peat cores located at 500-1900 m above sea level (asl) in the Changbai Mountains were used to reconstruct the pollution history over the past 150 years in northeastern (NE) China. The cores physicochemical parameters and 10 key chemical elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Results from loss on ignition (LOI), total organic carbon (TOC), and lithogenic element (Ti, Fe, and Mn) analysis show that the peatlands (Ch, Yc1 and Jb) over 900 m asl are ombrotrophic and the lower altitude peatlands (Dng, Jc, and Ha) are minerotrophic. There is a decreasing trend of trace element distribution with the altitude, mainly due to the local source input. The content of the magnetic particles and trace elements (Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) as well as their accumulation rates document 150 years of pollution history in the Changbai Mountain region. There is a significant elevated pattern of the geochemical records after the New China, which might mark the start date of Anthropocene since the 1950s in this region. The peatlands at the lower altitude (i.e., Dng and Ha) record the earliest fingerprints of metal contamination due to the starting period of massive reclaiming and immigrating in the Changbai Mountain region. The major increase of trace elements since the 1980s probably suggests a significant deterioration of the local environment due to the fast industrial and urbanization development after the Reform and Opening up in China.

Biological monitoring in southern Africa: A review of the current status, challenges and future prospects

Biological monitoring programmes have gained popularity around the world particularly in southern Africa as they are fast, integrative and cost-effective approaches for assessing the effects of environmental stressors on aquatic ecosystems. This article reviews current efforts that have been made to use bioindicators (i.e. macroinvertebrates, diatoms and fish) in monitoring water resources and to summarise the challenges in employing these biological monitoring tools in southern Africa. In South Africa, macroinvertebrate (South African Scoring System (SASS)) and diatom based indices (e.g. South African diatom index (SADI)) have demonstrated their utility in identifying sources of impairment and determining the extent of impacts thus giving natural resource managers a scientifically defensible rationale for developing guidelines for conservation and management. Despite this advancement in South Africa, however, developing regionally appropriate quantitative tools for diagnosing ecosystem health is a pressing need for several other southern African countries. Together with sound scientific research, it is imperative for southern African countries to develop specific legislation and have mandated agencies, with proper training and funding to implement biomonitoring and bioassessments. We recommend for the advancement and adoption of biological criteria as an integrated approach to assessing the impact of human activities in riverine ecosystems of the southern African region.

Jailed in the mountains: Genetic diversity and structure of an endemic newt species across the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees represent a natural laboratory for biogeographic, evolutionary and ecological research of mountain fauna as a result of the high variety of habitats and the profound effect of the glacial and interglacial periods. There is a paucity of studies providing a detailed insight into genetic processes and better knowledge on the patterns of genetic diversity and how they are maintained under high altitude conditions. This is of particular interest when considering the course of past climate conditions and glaciations in a species which is considered site tenacious, with long generation times. Here we analyzed the genetic patterns of diversity and structure of the endemic Pyrenean brook newt (Calotriton asper) along its distribution range, with special emphasis on the distinct habitat types (caves, streams, and lakes), and the altitudinal and geographical ranges, using a total set of 900 individuals from 44 different localities across the Pyrenean mountain range genotyped for 19 microsatellite loci. We found evidence for a negative longitudinal and positive altitudinal gradient of genetic diversity in C. asper populations. The fact that genetic diversity was markedly higher westwards is in accordance with other Pyrenean species. However, the impact of altitudinal gradient on the genetic diversity seems to differ from other species, and mostly from other amphibians. We found that lower altitudes can act as a barrier probably because the lowlands do not provide a suitable habitat for C. asper. Regarding the distinct habitat types, caves had significantly lower values of genetic diversity compared to streams or lakes. The mean F_ST value was relatively high (0.304) with maximum values as high as 0.771, suggesting a highly structured total population. Indeed, populations were grouped into five subclusters, the eastern populations (cluster 1) remained grouped into two subclusters and the central-western Pyrenees (cluster 2) into three subclusters. The increase of isolation with geographical distance is consistent with the population structure detected. In conclusion, C. asper seems to be adapted to high altitude mountain habitats, and its genetic diversity is higher in the western Pyrenees. In terms of conservation priority, we consider more relevant the populations that represent a reservoir of genetic diversity.

Bacterial Biomarkers of Marcellus Shale Activity in Pennsylvania

Unconventional oil and gas (UOG) extraction, also known as hydraulic fracturing, is becoming more prevalent with the increasing use and demand for natural gas; however, the full extent of its environmental impacts is still unknown. Here we measured physicochemical properties and bacterial community composition of sediment samples taken from twenty-eight streams within the Marcellus shale formation in northeastern Pennsylvania differentially impacted by hydraulic fracturing activities. Fourteen of the streams were classified as UOG+, and thirteen were classified as UOG- based on the presence of UOG extraction in their respective watersheds. One stream was located in a watershed that previously had UOG extraction activities but was recently abandoned. We utilized high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene to infer differences in sediment aquatic bacterial community structure between UOG+ and UOG- streams, as well as correlate bacterial community structure to physicochemical water parameters. Although overall alpha and beta diversity differences were not observed, there were a plethora of significantly enriched operational taxonomic units (OTUs) within UOG+ and UOG- samples. Our biomarker analysis revealed many of the bacterial taxa enriched in UOG+ streams can live in saline conditions, such as Rubrobacteraceae. In addition, several bacterial taxa capable of hydrocarbon degradation were also enriched in UOG+ samples, including Oceanospirillaceae. Methanotrophic taxa, such as Methylococcales, were significantly enriched as well. Several taxa that were identified as enriched in these samples were enriched in samples taken from different streams in 2014; moreover, partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) revealed clustering between streams from the different studies based on the presence of hydraulic fracturing along the second axis. This study revealed significant differences between bacterial assemblages within stream sediments of UOG+ and UOG- streams and identified several potential biomarkers for evaluating and monitoring the response of autochthonous bacterial communities to potential hydraulic fracturing impacts.
