Reducing Application of Nitrogen Fertilizer Increases Soil Bacterial Diversity and Drives Co-Occurrence Networks

Reducing nitrogen fertilizer application highlights its role in optimizing soil bacterial communities to achieve sustainable agriculture. However, the specific mechanisms of bacterial community change under these conditions are not yet clear. In this study, we employed long-term field experiments and high-throughput sequencing to analyze how varying levels of nitrogen application influence the soil bacterial community structure and co-occurrence networks. The results show that reducing the nitrogen inputs significantly enhances the diversity and evenness of the soil bacterial communities, possibly due to the diminished dominance of nitrogen-sensitive taxa, which in turn liberates the ecological niches for less competitive species. Furthermore, changes in the complexity and stability of the bacterial co-occurrence networks suggest increased community resilience and a shift toward more mutualistic interactions. These findings underline the potential of reduced nitrogen application to alleviate competitive pressures among bacterial species, thereby promoting a more diverse and stable microbial ecosystem, highlighting the role of competitive release in fostering microbial diversity. This research contributes to our understanding of how nitrogen management can influence soil health and offers insights into sustainable agricultural practices.

Temporal Variations in Aboveground Biomass, Nutrient Content, and Ecological Stoichiometry in Young and Middle-Aged Stands of Chinese Fir Forests

Understanding the ecological dynamics of forest ecosystems, particularly the influence of forest age structure on soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) content, is crucial for effective forest management and conservation. This study aimed to investigate the nutrient storage and ecological stoichiometry across different-aged stands of Chinese fir forests. Soil samples were collected from various depths (0-15 cm, 15-30 cm, and 30-45 cm) across four age groups of Chinese fir forests (8-year-old, 12-year-old, 20-year-old, and 25-year-old) in the Forest Farm, Pingjiang County, China. Soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were measured, and their stoichiometries were calculated. The results showed that both individual tree biomass and stand biomass, along with SOC, TN, and TP content, increased with stand age, highlighting the significant importance of stand age on biomass production and nutrient accumulation in forests. Specifically, soil C and P contents significantly increased as the forest aged, while variation in N content was relatively minor. Soil C/N and C/P ratios exhibited variation corresponding to forest age, suggesting alterations in the ecological stoichiometry characteristics of the forests over time. These findings are crucial for understanding the dynamics of ecosystem functioning and nutrient cycling within Chinese fir forests and provide a solid scientific basis for the effective management and conservation of these vital forest ecosystems.

Silver sulfide nanoparticles eliminate the stimulative effects of earthworms on nutrient uptake by soybeans in high organic matter soils

A significant knowledge gap exists regarding the impact of soil organic matter on the bioavailability of Ag2S-NPs (environmentally relevant forms of Ag-NPs) in soil-earthworm-plant systems. This study used two soils with varying organic matter content, both with and without earthworms, to investigate the bioavailability of Ag2S-NPs. The findings revealed an 80 % increase in Ag bioaccessibility to soybeans in soils with high organic matter content compared to soils with low organic matter. Additionally, the presence of earthworms significantly increased Cl concentrations from 24.3-62.2 mg L-1 to 80.1-147.2 mg L-1, triggering the elevated bioavailability of Ag. Interestingly, Ag2S-NPs eliminated the stimulative effects of earthworms on plant nutrient uptake. In the presence of earthworms, the high organic matter soil amended with Ag2S-NPs exhibited lower concentrations of essential elements (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, and P) in plant tissues compared to soils without earthworms. Our study presents evidence of the transformation of Ag2S-NPs into Ag-NPs across various soil solutions, resulting in the formation of Ag nanoparticle complexes. Particularly noteworthy is the significant reduction in particle sizes in soils incubated with earthworms and high organic matter content, from 85.0 nm to 40.2 nm. Notably, in the rhizosphere soil, a decrease in the relative abundance of nutrient cycling-related phyla was observed, with reductions of 18.5 % for Proteobacteria and 30.0 % for Actinobacteriota. These findings offer valuable insights into the biological and biochemical consequences of Ag2S-NP exposure on earthworm-mediated plant nutrient acquisition.

Patterns and drivers of atmospheric nitrogen deposition retention in global forests

Forests are the largest carbon sink in terrestrial ecosystems, and the impact of nitrogen (N) deposition on this carbon sink depends on the fate of external N inputs. However, the patterns and driving factors of N retention in different forest compartments remain elusive. In this study, we synthesized 408 observations from global forest 15N tracer experiments to reveal the variation and underlying mechanisms of 15N retention in plants and soils. The results showed that the average total ecosystem 15N retention in global forests was 63.04 ± 1.23%, with the soil pool being the main N sink (45.76 ± 1.29%). Plants absorbed 17.28 ± 0.83% of 15N, with more allocated to leaves (5.83 ± 0.63%) and roots (5.84 ± 0.44%). In subtropical and tropical forests, 15N was mainly absorbed by plants and mineral soils, while the organic soil layer in temperate forests retained more 15N. Additionally, forests retained moreN 15 H 4 + $$ {}^{15}\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{H}}_4^{+} $$ thanN 15 O 3 - $$ {}^{15}\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{O}}_3^{-} $$ , primarily due to the stronger capacity of the organic soil layer to retainN 15 H 4 + $$ {}^{15}\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{H}}_4^{+} $$ . The mechanisms of 15N retention varied among ecosystem compartments, with total ecosystem 15N retention affected by N deposition. Plant 15N retention was influenced by vegetative and microbial nutrient demands, while soil 15N retention was regulated by climate factors and soil nutrient supply. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of climate and nutrient supply and demand in regulating forest N retention and provides data to further explore the impacts of N deposition on forest carbon sequestration.

Meta-analysis reveals the effects of microbial inoculants on the biomass and diversity of soil microbial communities

Microbial inoculation involves transplanting microorganisms from their natural habitat to new plants or soils to improve plant performance, and it is being increasingly used in agriculture and ecological restoration. However, microbial inoculants can invade and alter the composition of native microbial communities; thus, a comprehensive analysis is urgently needed to understand the overall impact of microbial inoculants on the biomass, diversity, structure and network complexity of native communities. Here we provide a meta-analysis of 335 studies revealing a positive effect of microbial inoculants on soil microbial biomass. This positive effect was weakened by environmental stress and enhanced by the use of fertilizers and native inoculants. Although microbial inoculants did not alter microbial diversity, they induced major changes in the structure and bacterial composition of soil microbial communities, reducing the complexity of bacterial networks and increasing network stability. Finally, higher initial levels of soil nutrients amplified the positive impact of microbial inoculants on fungal biomass, actinobacterial biomass, microbial biomass carbon and microbial biomass nitrogen. Together, our results highlight the positive effects of microbial inoculants on soil microbial biomass, emphasizing the benefits of native inoculants and the important regulatory roles of soil nutrient levels and environmental stress.

Temporal variation of microbial nutrient limitation in citrus plantations: Insights from soil enzyme stoichiometry

Soil enzyme carbon (C): nitrogen (N): phosphorous (P) stoichiometry and their vector model has been widely used to elucidate the balance between microbial nutrient requirements and soil nutrient availability. However, limited knowledge is available on the dynamics of soil enzyme stoichiometry and microbial nutrient limitation following afforestation, especially in the economic forest. In this study, the effects of citrus plantation on C: N: P stoichiometry were assessed through a comparative study between cropland and citrus plantations with varying durations of afforestation (i.e., 3, 15, 25, and 35 years). It was found that the C, N, and P contents in the soil (SOC, STN, and STP), microbial biomass (MBC, MBN, and MBP), as well as the activities of C-, N-, and P-acquiring enzymes (BG, NAG, and AP), were 1.02-2.51 times higher than those in cropland. Additionally, C, N, and P contents in soil and microbial biomass increased consistently with increasing afforestation time. While the activities of C-, N-, and P-acquiring enzymes increased from 3 years to 25 years and then significantly decreased. In addition to NAG: AP, the stoichiometry of C, N, and P in soil (SOC: STN, SOC: STP, and STN: STP) and microbial biomass (MBC: MBN, MBC: MBP, and MBN: MBP), along with BG: NAG, exhibited a decline of 7.69-27.38% compared to cropland. Moreover, the majority of the C: N: P stoichiometry in soil, microbial biomass, and enzymes consistently decreased with increasing afforestation time, except for SOC: STN and NAG: AP, which exhibited an opposite trend. Furthermore, a significant decrease in microbial carbon limitation and an increase in microbial nitrogen limitation were observed with increasing afforestation time. Collectively, the dynamic of microbial nutrient limitation was primarily influenced by the interaction between soil nutrients and edaphic factors. The findings suggest that with the increasing duration of citrus plantation, it is crucial to focus on nitrogen (N) fertilization while maintaining a delicate balance between fertilization strategies and soil acidity levels.

Fungal, but not bacterial, diversity and network complexity promote network stability during roadside slope restoration

To restore degraded roadside ecosystems, conventional methods such as revegetation and soil amendment are frequently employed. However, our understanding of the long-term effects of these restoration approaches on soil microbial diversity and network complexity across different vegetation types remains poor, which contributes to poor restoration outcomes. In this study, we explored the effects of roadside slope restoration on microbial communities across different vegetation types at varying stages of restoration. We found that restoration time had a more pronounced impact on microbial diversity than specific vegetation type. As restoration progressed, microbial network complexity and fungal diversity increased, but bacterial diversity declined, suggesting that keystone taxa may contribute to network complexity. Interestingly, bacterial network complexity increased concomitant with decreasing network modularity and robustness, which may compromise system stability. Distinct vegetation types were associated with restoration-sensitive microbial communities at different restoration stages. Leguminouse and nitrogen-fixing plants, such as Albiziak alkora, Ginkgo biloba, Rhus chinensis, Rhapis excels, and Rubia cordifolia exhibited such associations after five years of restoration. These keystone taxa included Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadota, and Myxococcota. We also found that bacterial alpha diversity was significantly correlated with restoration time, soil pH, moisture, available phosphate, nitrate nitrogen, and plant height, while fungal diversity was primarily shaped by restoration time. Together, our findings suggest that soil properties, environmental factors, vegetation type, and dominant species can be manipulated to guide the trajectory of ecological recovery by regulating the abundance of certain microbial taxa.

Soil health reduction following the conversion of primary vegetation covers in a semi-arid environment

A degraded forest is the outcome of a degradation process that has adverse effects on ecosystem functions and services. This phenomenon results in alterations of soil physicochemical and biological properties, which serve as valuable indicators for assessing soil health that has been recognized as a crucial component of soil quality. For several decades, the conversion of forested areas into rangeland has been documented in specific regions of the world. There is a widespread lack of global understanding regarding the lasting consequences of land degradation on soil health indicators. The present study aims to investigate the impact of forest degradation on soil health indicators in a mountainous semi-arid region located in northern Iran. The study area was predominantly forested, but due to human activities over the past 30 years, it has been transformed into three distinct land uses: forest, forest-rangeland ecotones and rangeland. In each of these land covers, a total of 20 litter (O-horizon) and 20 soil (from two depths of 0-15 and 15-30 cm) samples were collected in the summer (August 2022) season. According to our results, the highest litter thickness, P and Mg were in forest ecosystem, the lowest in rangeland ecosystem. The findings indicated that following the conversion of forest to rangeland, there was a decrease in soil aggregate stability, porosity, soil organic matter, POC, PON, NH4+, NO3- and nutrient levels, while soil bulk density increased. The forest ecosystem showed notably higher C and N stocks (45 and 5.21 Mg ha-1) in comparison to the rangeland (38 and 3.32 Mg ha-1) ecosystem. In addition, P, K, Ca, and Mg exhibited elevated levels within the total root of the forest ecosystem (2.12, 1.23, 0.71, and 0.38 %, respectively), whereas the lower values (1.29, 1.01, 0.43, and 0.23 %, respectively) were found in the rangeland ecosystem. Following the shift of land cover from forest to rangeland, soil fauna, microflora populations, soil enzymes and microbial activities decreased (about 1-2 times higher in the forestland). This research emphasizes the urgent need to advance sustainable management practices to prevent further degradation and promote the implementation of restoration or rehabilitation techniques in degraded forests. Despite being conducted in a semi-arid region situated in northern Iran, the findings of this study have considerable value for the sustainable management of soil and land conservation in various other semi-arid regions around the world.

Impacts of mining on vegetation phenology and sensitivity assessment of spectral vegetation indices to mining activities in arid/semi-arid areas

Measuring the impact of mining activities on vegetation phenology and assessing the sensitivity of vegetation indices (VIs) to it are crucial for understanding land degradation in mining areas and enhancing the carbon sink capacity following the ecological restoration of mines. To this end, we have developed a novel technical framework to quantify the impact of mining activities on vegetation, and applied it to the Bainaimiao copper mining area in Inner Mongolia. Phenological indices are extracted based on the VI time series data of Sentinel-2, and changes in phenological differences in various directions are used to quantify the impact of mining activities on vegetation. Finally, indicators such as mean difference, standard deviation, index value distribution interval, and concentration of index value distribution were selected to assess the sensitivity of the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), Green Chlorophyll Index (GCI), Global Environmental Monitoring Index (GEMI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Renormalized Difference Vegetation Index (RDVI), Red-Edge Chlorophyll Index (RECI), and Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) to mining activities. The results of the study show that the impact of mining activities on surrounding vegetation extends to an area three times larger than the actual mining activity area. When compared with the reference and unaffected areas, the affected area experienced a delay of approximately 10 days in seasonal vegetation development. Environmental pollution caused by the tailings pond was identified as the primary factor influencing this delay. Significant variations in the sensitivity of each VI to assess mining activities in arid/semi-arid areas were observed. Notably, GCI, GNDVI and RDVI displayed relatively high sensitivity to discrepancies in the spectral attributes of vegetation within the affected area, while SAVI reflected the overall spectral stability of the vegetation in the affected area. The research findings have the potential to provide valuable technical guidance for holistic environmental management in mining areas and hold great significance in preventing further land degradation and supporting ecological restoration in mining areas.

Microbial-based metabolites associated with degradation of imidacloprid and its impact on stress-responsive proteins

Imidacloprid (IMD), a neonicotinoid insecticide, is intensively used in agricultural fields for effective protection against aphids, cane beetles, thrips, stink bugs, locusts, etc., is causing serious environmental concerns. In recent years, seed treatment with Imidacloprid is being practiced mainly to prevent sucking insect pests. In India, due to the increase in application of this insecticide residue has been proven to have an impact on the quality of soil and water. In view of this, the current investigation is focussed on sustainable approach to minimize the residual effect of IMD in agricultural fields. The present study reveals a most promising imidacloprid resistant bacterium Lysinibacillus fusiformis IMD-Bio5 strain isolated from insecticide-contaminated soil. The isolated bacterial strain upon tested for its biodegradation potential on mineral salt medium (MSM) showed a significant survival growth at 150 g/L of IMD achieved after 3 days, whereas immobilized cells on MSM amended with 200 g/L of IMD as the sole carbon source provided degradation of 188 and 180 g/L of IMD in silica beads and sponge matrices, respectively. The liquid chromatography mass spectrometry was performed to test the metabolite responsive for IMD biodegradation potential of L. fusiformis IMD-Bio5 which showed the induced activity of the metabolite 6-Chloronicotinic acid. Furthermore, as compared to the untreated control, the Lysinibacillus fusiformis IMD-Bio5 protein profile revealed a range of patterns showing the expression of stress enzymes. Thus, results provided a most effective bacterium enabling the removal of IMD-like hazardous contaminants from the environment, which contributes to better agricultural production and soil quality, while long-term environmental advantages are restored.

Drivers and human impacts on topsoil bacterial and fungal community biogeography across Australia

Soil microbial diversity mediates a wide range of key processes and ecosystem services influencing planetary health. Our knowledge of microbial biogeography patterns, spatial drivers and human impacts at the continental scale remains limited. Here, we reveal the drivers of bacterial and fungal community distribution in Australian topsoils using 1384 soil samples from diverse bioregions. Our findings highlight that climate factors, particularly precipitation and temperature, along with soil properties, are the primary drivers of topsoil microbial biogeography. Using random forest machine-learning models, we generated high-resolution maps of soil bacteria and fungi across continental Australia. The maps revealed microbial hotspots, for example, the eastern coast, southeastern coast, and west coast were dominated by Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria. Fungal distribution is strongly influenced by precipitation, with Ascomycota dominating the central region. This study also demonstrated the impact of human modification on the underground microbial community at the continental scale, which significantly increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Ascomycota, but decreased Chloroflexi and Basidiomycota. The variations in microbial phyla could be attributed to distinct responses to altered environmental factors after human modifications. This study provides insights into the biogeography of soil microbiota, valuable for regional soil biodiversity assessments and monitoring microbial responses to global changes.

Turtle species and ecology drive carapace microbiome diversity in three seasonally interconnected wetland habitats

Different species of freshwater turtles exhibit primary behaviours ranging from aerial basking to benthic bottom-walking, cycle between wet and dry conditions at different time intervals, and undertake short-distance overland movements between aquatic habitats. These behaviours in turn may impact the accumulation of microbes on external shell surfaces of turtles and provide novel niches for differentiation of microbial communities. We assessed microbial diversity using 16S and 18S rRNA metabarcoding on carapace surfaces of six species of freshwater turtles residing in three adjacent and seasonally interconnected wetland habitats in southeast Oklahoma (United States). Communities were highly diverse, with nearly 4200 prokaryotic and 500 micro-eukaryotic amplicon sequence variants recovered, and included taxa previously reported as common or differentially abundant on turtle shells. The 16S rRNA alpha diversity tended to be highest for two species of benthic turtles, while 18S rRNA alpha diversity was highest for two basking and one shallow-water benthic species. Beta diversity of communities was more strongly differentiated by turtle species than by collection site, and ordination patterns were largely reflective of turtle species' primary habits (i.e. benthic, basking, or benthic-basking). Our data support that freshwater turtles could play a role in microbial ecology and evolution in freshwater habitats and warrant additional exploration including in areas with high native turtle diversity and inter-habitat turtle movements.

Effects of Vegetation Types and Soil Properties on Regional Soil Carbon and Nitrogen in Salinized Reservoir Wetland, Northeast China

This study investigated the spatial variability in soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), soil microbial biomass nitrogen (SMBN) and their possible relationships with other soil properties in the Hongqipao reservoir, which is dominated by different vegetation types. The results showed that there were high spatial variabilities in SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN, and that the SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN contents decreased with increasing soil depth in the Hongqipao reservoir. The SOC was significantly positively correlated with TN, SMBC, moisture content (MC) and negatively correlated with carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N ratio) and bulk density (BD). Soil TN was significantly positively correlated with SMBC, SMBN, MC and negatively correlated with the C:N ratio, BD and pH. The SMBC was significantly positively correlated with SMBN, MC and negatively correlated with the C:N ratio, BD and pH. The SMBN was significantly negatively correlated with the C:N ratio and BD. All of the measures of soil properties in this study could explain the higher significant variability in the response variables (SOC, TN, SMBC and SMBN contents). The generalized additive model (GAM) showed that SOC and TN had different influencing factors in different soil depths. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that vegetation types had a significantly positive effect on TN and SMBN, and the soil depths had a significantly positive effect on SOC and a significantly negative effect on TN and SMBC. This study further suggests that vegetation types play a major role in determining the spatial characteristics of soil carbon and nitrogen, and any changes in the vegetation types in the reservoir may influence the distributions of soil carbon and nitrogen. This may affect the global carbon and nitrogen budgets and the atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration significantly.

Spatial distribution of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in tidal flat reclamation areas in China

Tidal flat areas are important resources for land development and are becoming antibiotic resistance receivers that trigger major health concerns. The spatial distributions of forty-nine antibiotics, nine antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), one mobile gene element (MGE) gene, and nine available metals in the soils and sediments along the coastlines of the Yellow Sea in China were quantified. Hierarchical linear model analysis was used to explore relationships between the antibiotics and ARGs across multiple effects resulting from human activities and environmental factors. Fish farm sediments and farmland soils showed high levels of quinolones (QNs) (maximum 637 ng·g-1), sulfonamides (SAs) (maximum 221 ng·g-1), and corresponding ARGs. Significant positive correlations (P from 5.47 × 10-14 to 0.0487) were observed between the antibiotics (QNs, SAs, and chlortetracycline) and their corresponding ARGs (qnrA, qnrD, aac(6')-Ib-cr, dfrA, sul2, and tetA), indicating the selective pressure from antibiotics in soils and sediments. Nine available metals had positive correlations with at least one ARG, indicating heavy metal pollution could enhance the ARGs. Sheep and poultry husbandry and marine aquaculture contribute the most to the antibiotic resistance in the coastlines. In conclusion, antibiotic pollutions have promoting effects at sub-inhibitory concentrations and more attention should be given to inhibit the enrichment of ARGs during tidal flat reclamation processes. The study also suggests the induction effects from metal pollutions, MGE spread, and the antibiotic pollutions from the usage in livestock and aquaculture.

Augmentation of plant biomass productivity using epigeic earthworm Perionyx excavatus and Eisenia fetida as soil nutrient facilitators

With the increasing demand for organic food production, the earthworm is used as a soil nutrient facilitator. The present study was conducted to assess the effect of epigeic earthworms Perionyx excavatus and Eisenia. fetida on soil nutrients and the consequent improvement of biomass productivity and yield of Capsicum chinense Jacq and Zea mays L. The experiment was conducted in 5 L and 15 L capacity plastic pots for C. chinense and Z. mays with 150 g and 300 g of half-decomposed cow dung, respectively. It was observed that the weekly harvest rate of ripened chili was 17.59 g, 13.91 g, and 9.24 g in P. excavatus, control, and E. fetida pot showing 26.49% higher in P. excavatus. Also, the total kernel count per corn was significantly different (F(2, 9) = 37.78, p < 0.05), with the highest kernel present in P. excavatus(333.5 ± 13.5), followed by E. fetida(261.5 ± 16.5) and control (235 ± 22). The impact of P. excavatus was more perceptible in C. chinense, indicated by higher leaf biomass (69.16%), root length (30.14%), and fruit harvest (71.03%). However, the effect of E. fetida was noticed more in Z. mays (stem length, 19.24%, stem biomass, 14.39%, root biomass, 20.9%, kernel count, 41.91%, and kernel weight, 95.07%). Enhanced plant productivity was also supported by an increasing soil nutrient turnover in organic carbon (OC) (25.76% and 23.4%), Phosphorus (P) (31.03% and 25.67%), and Potassium (K) (41.67% and 12.26) in P. excavatus and E. fetida worked soil respectively. The findings indicate that earthworms have a notable impact on plant biomass productivity by promoting the mineralization of soil nutrients and imply on possibility of organic cultivation of seasonal vegetables without using synthetic fertilizers.

Nitrogen Journey in Plants: From Uptake to Metabolism, Stress Response, and Microbe Interaction

Plants uptake and assimilate nitrogen from the soil in the form of nitrate, ammonium ions, and available amino acids from organic sources. Plant nitrate and ammonium transporters are responsible for nitrate and ammonium translocation from the soil into the roots. The unique structure of these transporters determines the specificity of each transporter, and structural analyses reveal the mechanisms by which these transporters function. Following absorption, the nitrogen metabolism pathway incorporates the nitrogen into organic compounds via glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase that convert ammonium ions into glutamine and glutamate. Different isoforms of glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase exist, enabling plants to fine-tune nitrogen metabolism based on environmental cues. Under stressful conditions, nitric oxide has been found to enhance plant survival under drought stress. Furthermore, the interaction between salinity stress and nitrogen availability in plants has been studied, with nitric oxide identified as a potential mediator of responses to salt stress. Conversely, excessive use of nitrate fertilizers can lead to health and environmental issues. Therefore, alternative strategies, such as establishing nitrogen fixation in plants through diazotrophic microbiota, have been explored to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Ultimately, genomics can identify new genes related to nitrogen fixation, which could be harnessed to improve plant productivity.

Climate plays a dominant role over land management in governing soil carbon dynamics in North Western Himalayas

The soil carbon (C) dynamics is strongly influenced by climate and land-use patterns in the Himalayas. Therefore, soils under five prominent land use [e.g., maize (Zea mays), horticulture, natural forest, grassland, and wasteland] were sampled down up to 30 cm depth under two climatic conditions viz., temperate and subtropical to assess the impacts of climate and landuse on soil C dynamics. Results demonstrated that irrespective of land use, temperate soil contains 30.66% higher C than subtropical soils. Temperate soils under natural forests had the higher total organic carbon (TOC, 21.90 g kg^-1), Walkley-Black carbon (WBC, 16.42 g kg^-1), contents, and stocks (TOC, 66.92 Mg ha^-1 and WBC, 50.24 Mg ha^-1), and total soil organic matter (TSOM, 3.78%) concentration as compared to other land uses like maize, horticulture, grassland, and wasteland. Under both climatic conditions, maize land use had the lowest TOC 9.63, 6.55 g kg^-1 and WBC 7.22, 4.91 g kg^-1 at 0-15 and 15-30 cm soil depth, respectively. Horticulture land use had 62.58 and 62.61% higher TOC and WBC over maize-based land use under subtropical and temperate climatic conditions at 0-30 cm soil depth, respectively. However, soils of maize land use under temperate conditions had ∼2 times more TOC than in subtropical conditions. The study inferred that the C-losses is more in the subtropical soil than in temperate soils. Hence, the subtropical region needs more rigorous adoption of C conservation farming practices than the temperate climatic setting. Although, the adoption of C storing and conserving practices is crucial under both climatic settings to arrest land degradation. Horticultural land uses along with conservation effective soil management practices may be encouraged to restore more soil C and to improve the livelihood security of the hill populace in the North Western Himalayas.

Dynamic changes of soil microorganisms in rotation farmland at the western foot of the Greater Khingan range

Crop rotation and other tillage systems can affect soil microbial communities and functions. Few studies have reported the response of soil spatial microbial communities to rotation under drought stress. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to explore the dynamic changes of the soil space microbial community under different drought stress-rotation patterns. In this study, two water treatments were set up, control W1 (mass water content 25%-28%), and drought W2 (mass water content 9%-12%). Four crop rotation patterns were set in each water content, spring wheat continuous (R1), spring wheat-potato (R2), spring wheat-potato-rape (R3) and spring wheat-rape (R4), for a total of eight treatments (W1R1, W1R2, W1R3, W1R4, W2R1, W2R2, W2R3, W2R4). Endosphere, rhizosphere and bulk soil of spring wheat in each treatment were collected, and root space microbial community data were generated. The soil microbial community changed under different treatments and their relationship with soil factors were analyzed using a co-occurrence network, mantel test, and other methods. The results revealed that the alpha diversity of microorganisms in the rhizosphere and bulk soil did not differ significantly, but it was significantly greater than in the endosphere. The bacteria community structure was more stable, fungi alpha-diversity significant changes (p < 0.05), that were more sensitive to the response of various treatments than bacteria. The co-occurrence network between fungal species was stable under rotation patterns (R2, R3, R4), while the community stability was poor under continuous cropping pattern (R1), and interactions were strengthened. Soil organic matter (SOM), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and pH value were the most important factors dominating the bacteria community structural changed in the endosphere, rhizosphere, and bulk soil. The dominant factor that affected the fungal community structural changed in the endosphere, rhizosphere, and bulk soil was SOM. Therefore, we conclude that soil microbial community changes under the drought stress-rotation patterns are mainly influenced by soil SOM and microbial biomass content.

Effect of long-term application of bioorganic fertilizer on the soil property and bacteria in rice paddy

The application of novel bioorganic fertilizer (BIO) has been established as a weed biocontrol strategy, and reduce herbicides pollution and negatively effects on agricultural ecosystems. However, its long-term influences on soil bacterial communities are unknown. Here, 16 S rRNA sequencing to identify the changes that occur in soil bacterial community and enzyme under BIO treatments after five years in a field experiment. BIO application effectively controlled weeds, however no obvious differences between treatments were observed under BIO-50, BIO-100, BIO-200 and BIO-400 treatment. Anaeromyxobacter and Clostridium_ sensu_ stricto_1 were the two dominant genera among BIO-treated soil samples. The BIO-800 treatment had a slight influence on the species diversity index, which was more remarkable after five years. The seven significantly-different genera between BIO-800 treatment and untreated soils included C._sensu_stricto_1, Syntrophorhabdus, Candidatus_Koribacter, Rhodanobacter, Bryobacter, Haliangium, Anaeromyxobacter. In addition, BIO application had different effects on soil enzymatic activities and chemical properties. The extractable P and pH saliency correlated with Haliangium and C._Koribacter, and C._sensu_stricto_1 observably correlated with exchangeable K, hydrolytic N and organic matter. Taken together, our data suggest that BIO application effectively controlled weeds and a slight influence on soil bacterial communities and enzymes. These findings expand our knowledge of the application of BIO as widely used as a sustainable weed control in rice paddy.

Structure of Microbial Communities and Biological Activity in Tundra Soils of the Euro-Arctic Region (Rybachy Peninsula, Russia)

The relevance of the Arctic regions' study is rapidly increasing due to the sensitive response of fragile ecosystems to climate change and anthropogenic pressure. The microbiome is an important component that determines the soils' functioning and an indicator of changes occurring in ecosystems. Rybachy Peninsula is the northernmost part of the continental European Russia and is almost completely surrounded by Barents Sea water. For the first time, the microbial communities of the Entic Podzol, Albic Podzol, Rheic Histosol and Folic Histosol as well as anthropogenically disturbed soils (chemical pollution and human impact, growing crops) on the Rybachy Peninsula were characterized using plating and fluorescence microscopy methods, in parallel with the enzymatic activity of soils. The amount and structure of soil microbial biomass, such as the total biomass of fungi and prokaryote, the length and diameter of fungal and actinomycete mycelium, the proportion of spores and mycelium in the fungal biomass, the number of spores and prokaryotic cells, the proportion of small and large fungal spores and their morphology were determined. In the soils of the peninsula, the fungal biomass varied from 0.121 to 0.669 mg/g soil. The biomass of prokaryotes in soils ranged from 9.22 to 55.45 μg/g of soil. Fungi predominated, the proportion of which in the total microbial biomass varied from 78.5 to 97.7%. The number of culturable microfungi ranged from 0.53 to 13.93 × 10³ CFU/g in the topsoil horizons, with a maximum in Entic Podzol and Albic Podzol soils and a minimum in anthropogenically disturbed soil. The number of culturable copiotrophic bacteria varied from 41.8 × 10³ cells/g in a cryogenic spot to 5551.3 × 10³ cells /g in anthropogenically disturbed soils. The number of culturable oligotrophic bacteria ranged from 77.9 to 12,059.6 × 10³ cells/g. Changes in natural soils because of anthropogenic impact and a change in vegetation types have led to a change in the structure of the community of soil microorganisms. Investigated tundra soils had high enzymatic activity in native and anthropogenic conditions. The β-glucosidase and urease activity were comparable or even higher than in the soils of more southern natural zone, and the activity of dehydrogenase was 2-5 times lower. Thus, despite the subarctic climatic conditions, local soils have a significant biological activity upon which the productivity of ecosystems largely depends. The soils of the Rybachy Peninsula have a powerful enzyme pool due to the high adaptive potential of soil microorganisms to the extreme conditions of the Arctic, which allows them to perform their functions even under conditions of anthropogenic interference.

The Potential of Microalgae-Bacteria Consortia to Restore Degraded Soils

Soil restoration is one of the biggest challenges of this century. Besides the negative impacts of climate change, the current increase in food demands has put severe pressure on soil resources, resulting in a significant area of degraded land worldwide. However, beneficial microorganisms, such as microalgae and plant growth-promoting bacteria, have an outstanding ability to restore soil health and fertility. In this mini-review, we summarize state-of-the-art knowledge on these microorganisms as amendments that are used to restore degraded and contaminated soils. Furthermore, the potential of microbial consortia to maximize beneficial effects on soil health and boost the production of plant-growth-promoting compounds within a mutualistic interaction is discussed.

Soil Nutrients, Enzyme Activities, and Microbial Communities along a Chronosequence of Chinese Fir Plantations in Subtropical China

Forests undergo a long-term development process from young to mature stages, yet the variations in soil nutrients, enzyme activities, microbial diversity, and community composition related to forest ages are still unclear. In this study, the characteristics of soil bacterial and fungal communities with their corresponding soil environmental factors in the young, middle, and mature stages (7, 15, and 25-year-old) of Chinese fir plantations (CFP) in the subtropical region of China were investigated in 2021. Results showed that the alpha diversity indices (Chao1 and Shannon) of soil bacteria and fungi were higher in 15 and 25-year-old stands than in 7-year-old stand of CFP, while the soil pH, soil water content, soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, sucrase, urease, acid phosphatase, catalase, and microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus showed higher in 7-year-old stand than other two stands of CFP. The nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis revealed that the soil microbial species composition was significantly different in three stand ages of CFP. The redundancy and canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the soil urease and microbial biomass nitrogen were the main factors affecting soil bacterial and fungal species composition. Our findings suggested that soil microbial diversity and community structure were inconsistent with changes in soil nutrients and enzyme activities during CFP development, and enhancing stand nurturing and soil nutrient accumulation in the mid-development stage were beneficial to the sustainable management of CFP.

Effects of a Nanonetwork-Structured Soil Conditioner on Microbial Community Structure

Fertilizer application can increase yields, but nutrient runoff may cause environmental pollution and affect soil quality. A network-structured nanocomposite used as a soil conditioner is beneficial to crops and soil. However, the relationship between the soil conditioner and soil microbes is unclear. We evaluated the soil conditioner's impact on nutrient loss, pepper growth, soil improvement, and, especially, microbial community structure. High-throughput sequencing was applied to study the microbial communities. The microbial community structures of the soil conditioner treatment and the CK were significantly different, including in diversity and richness. The predominant bacterial phyla were Pseudomonadota, Actinomycetota, and Bacteroidota. Acidobacteriota and Chloroflexi were found in significantly higher numbers in the soil conditioner treatment. Ascomycota was the dominant fungal phylum. The Mortierellomycota phylum was found in significantly lower numbers in the CK. The bacteria and fungi at the genus level were positively correlated with the available K, available N, and pH, but were negatively correlated with the available P. Our results showed that the loss of nutrients controlled by the soil conditioner increased available N, which improved soil properties. Therefore, the microorganisms in the improved soil were changed. This study provides a correlation between improvements in microorganisms and the network-structured soil conditioner, which can promote plant growth and soil improvement.

Phosphate Solubilization and Plant Growth Promotion by Pantoea brenneri Soil Isolates

Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) in soil have been shown to reduce mineral phosphate fertilizer supplementation and promote plant growth. Nevertheless, only several P-solubilizing microorganisms capable of solubilizing both organic and mineral sources of soil phosphorus have been identified up to now. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inorganic soil phosphate solubilizing activity of phytate-hydrolyzing Pantoea brenneri soil isolates. We showed that the strains efficiently solubilize a variety of inorganic phosphates. We optimized the media composition and culturing conditions to improve the solubilization efficiency of the strains and investigated the mechanisms of their phosphate solubilization. Through HPLC analysis, it was determined that P. brenneri produce oxalic, malic, formic, malonic, lactic, maleic, acetic, and citric acids as well as acid and alkaline phosphatases while growing on insoluble phosphate sources. Finally, we analyzed the influence of P. brenneri strains with multiple PGP-treats on plant growth in greenhouse experiments and showed their ability to promote growth of potato.

Microplastics may increase the environmental risks of Cd via promoting Cd uptake by plants: A meta-analysis

Microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) are widely distributed in soil ecosystems, posing a potential threat to agricultural production and human health. However, the coupled effects of MPs and Cd in soil-plant systems remain largely unknown, especially on a large scale. In this study, a meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of MPs on plant growth and Cd accumulation under the Cd contamination conditions. Our results showed that MPs had significantly negative effects on shoot biomass (a decrease of 11.8 %) and root biomass (a decrease of 8.79 %). MPs also significantly increased Cd accumulation in the shoots and roots by 14.6 % and 13.5 %, respectively, revealing that MPs promote plant Cd uptake. Notably, polyethylene displayed a stronger promoting effect (an increase of 29.4 %) on Cd accumulation among these MP types. MPs induced a significantly increase (9.75 %) in concentration of soil available Cd and a slight decrease in soil pH, which may be the main driver promoting plant Cd uptake. MP addition posed physiological toxicity risks to plants by inhibiting photosynthesis and enhancing oxidative damage, directly demonstrating that MPs in combination with Cd can pose synergetic toxicity risks to plants. We further noted that MPs altered microbial diversity, likely influencing Cd bioavailability in soil-plant systems. Overall, our study has important implications for the combined impacts of Cd and MPs on plants and provides new insights into developing guidelines for the sustainable use of MPs in agriculture.

An Environmental DNA Primer for Microbial and Restoration Ecology

Environmental DNA (eDNA) sequencing-DNA collected from the environment from living cells or shed DNA-was first developed for working with microbes and has greatly benefitted microbial ecologists for decades since. These tools have only become increasingly powerful with the advent of metabarcoding and metagenomics. Most new studies that examine diverse assemblages of bacteria, archaea, protists, fungi, and viruses lean heavily into eDNA using these newer technologies, as the necessary sequencing technology and bioinformatic tools have become increasingly affordable and user friendly. However, eDNA methods are rapidly evolving, and sometimes it can feel overwhelming to simply keep up with the basics. In this review, we provide a starting point for microbial ecologists who are new to DNA-based methods by detailing the eDNA methods that are most pertinent, including study design, sample collection and storage, selecting the right sequencing technology, lab protocols, equipment, and a few bioinformatic tools. Furthermore, we focus on how eDNA work can benefit restoration and what modifications are needed when working in this subfield.

Biogas Residues Improved Microbial Diversity and Disease Suppression Function under Extent Indigenous Soil Microbial Biomass

Indigenous soil microbial biomass (ISMB) plays a key role in maintaining essential functions and biodiversity of soil health. One of the critical unknowns is how the indigenous microorganisms respond to different fertilizers which is directly related to agricultural production. Therefore, we used Mi-Seq sequencing and network analyses to compare the response of ISMB to biogas residue and chemical fertilizers. The results showed that crop production was profoundly influenced by levels of ISMB present and is further dependent on the strategy of fertilizer application. Higher ISMB primarily manifests through retention of richer microbial abundance, a balanced community structure, and tightened co-occurrence within a certain proportion of Nitrospirae, Rhizophlyctidaceae, and Gemmatimonadetes. Compared to chemical fertilizer, biogas residue resulted in higher production with more strongly linked nodes such as Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Gemmatimonadetes. Under the same level of ISMB, the microbial diversity was richer and co-occurrence was tighter when biogas residues were applied compared with chemical fertilizer. In addition, the higher level of ISMB with biogas residue applied had a lower abundance of potential fungal pathogens in both bulk and rhizosphere soil compared with chemical fertilizer. This study provides critical data to understand the influence of ISMB and biogas residue on soil ecological system.

Application of biochar and compost improved soil properties and enhanced plant growth in a Pb-Zn mine tailings soil

This study evaluated the effect of biochar and compost on physiochemical properties, heavy metal content, microbial biomass, enzyme activities, and plant growth in Pb-Zn mine tailings. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of biochar, compost, and their combination on the availability of heavy metals, physicochemical features, and enzyme activities in mining soil. Compared to separate addition, the combined application of biochar and compost was more effective to improve soil pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP), and potassium (AK). All amendments significantly decreased CaCl₂-extractable Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd. Soil enzyme activities were activated by biochar and compost. Meanwhile, the addition of biochar and compost decreased heavy metal content in plant tissues and increased plant biomass. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that plant biomass was positively correlated with nutrient levels, microbial biomass, and enzyme activities, whereas it was negatively correlated with CaCl₂-extractable heavy metals. These results enhance our understanding of the ecological functions of biochar and compost on the restoration of mining soil and reveal the potential benefit of organic amendments on the improvement of mining soil quality.

The impact of land use and land cover changes on the landscape pattern and ecosystem service value in Sanjiangyuan region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Decades of intensifying human activities have caused dramatic changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in the ecologically fragile areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which have led to significant changes in ecosystem service value (ESV). Taking the ecologically fragile Sanjiangyuan region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as the research object, we focused on understanding the impact of LULC changes on the Sanjiangyuan's landscape pattern and its corresponding ESV, which was combined with a Markov-Plus model to predict LULC changes in 2030. The results showed: (1) from 2000 to 2020, the LULC of Sanjiangyuan has changed to varying degrees, respectively. In the central and southern regions where animal husbandry is the mainstay activity, the area of grass land converted to bareland had expanded; (2) from 2000 to 2010, the total regional ESV increased sharply. However, the total amount of ESV decreased from 2010 to 2020; (3) the overall ESV in the study area was observed to be trending down and is expected to decrease by approximately 4.25 billion CNY by 2030; (4) the fragmentation and complexity of regional landscape patterns will negatively affect local ecosystem stability and biodiversity. Overall, there is a strong temporal and spatial correlation between LULC and ESV. This study will provide a reference for the local government to provide targeted and sustainable land management policies, thereby promoting the improvement of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau regional ecology value.

Identifying thresholds of nitrogen enrichment for substantial shifts in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community metrics in a temperate grassland of northern China

Nitrogen (N) enrichment poses threats to biodiversity and ecosystem stability, while arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi play important roles in ecosystem stability and functioning. However, the ecological impacts, especially thresholds of N enrichment potentially causing AM fungal community shifts have not been adequately characterized. Based on a long-term field experiment with nine N addition levels ranging from 0 to 50 g N m^-2  yr^-1 in a temperate grassland, we characterized the community response patterns of AM fungi to N enrichment. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal biomass continuously decreased with increasing N addition levels. However, AM fungal diversity did not significantly change below 20 g N m^-2  yr^-1 , but dramatically decreased at higher N levels, which drove the AM fungal community to a potentially unstable state. Structural equation modeling showed that the decline in AM fungal biomass could be well explained by soil acidification, whereas key driving factors for AM fungal diversity shifted from soil nitrogen : phosphorus (N : P) ratio to soil pH with increasing N levels. Different aspects of AM fungal communities (biomass, diversity and community composition) respond differently to increasing N addition levels. Thresholds for substantial community shifts in response to N enrichment in this grassland ecosystem are identified.

Interactive effects of global change drivers as determinants of the link between soil biodiversity and ecosystem functioning

Biodiversity, both aboveground and belowground, is negatively affected by global changes such as drought or warming. This loss of biodiversity impacts Earth's ecosystems, as there is a positive relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF). Even though soils host a large fraction of biodiversity that underlies major ecosystem functions, studies exploring the relationship between soil biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (sBEF) as influenced by global change drivers (GCDs) remain scarce. Here we highlight the need to decipher sBEF relationships under the effect of interactive GCDs that are intimately connected in a changing world. We first state that sBEF relationships depend on the type of function (e.g., C cycling or decomposition) and biodiversity facet (e.g., abundance, species richness, or biomass) considered. Then, we shed light on the impact of single and interactive GCDs on soil biodiversity and sBEF and show that results from scarce studies studying interactive effects range from antagonistic to additive to synergistic when two individual GCDs cooccur. This indicates the need for studies quantitatively accounting for the impacts of interactive GCDs on sBEF relationships. Finally, we provide guidelines for optimized methodological and experimental approaches to study sBEF in a changing world that will provide more valuable information on the real impact of (interactive) GCDs on sBEF. Together, we highlight the need to decipher the sBEF relationship in soils to better understand soil functioning under ongoing global changes, as changes in sBEF are of immediate importance for ecosystem functioning.

Screening of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and their abilities of phosphorus solubilization and wheat growth promotion

BACKGROUND

Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can enhance plant growth and phosphorus (P) solubilization, it also has been reported to reduce the negative effects of overused agricultural fertilizer in farmland and protect the soil environment. However, the mechanism behind this interaction has not been fully elucidated.

RESULTS

In this study, we screened out Pseudomonas moraviensis, Bacillus safensis, and Falsibacillus pallidus which can both solubilize P efficiently and produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) from sandy fluvo-aquic soils. The yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum) under PSB inoculation significantly increased up to 14.42% (P < 0.05) compared with the control treatment in phosphate fertilizer-used farmland. Besides promoting wheat growth, we found the labile P fraction in soil was significantly increased by over 122.04% (P < 0.05) under PSB inoculation compared with it in soils without, in parallel, the stable P fraction was significantly reduced by over 46.89% (P < 0.05). Furthermore, PSB inoculation increased the soil microbial biomass and activity, indicating that PSB screened out in this work performed a remarkable ability to colonize the soils in the wheat field.

CONCLUSION

PSB from sandy fluvo-aquic soil improve wheat growth and crop productivity by increasing the labile P fraction and IAA content in the greenhouse and wheat field. Our work provides an environment and economy-friendly bacterial resource that potentially promotes sustainable agricultural development in the long term.

Evaluation of the Ecological Environment Affected by Cry1Ah1 in Poplar

Populus is a genus of globally significant plantation trees used widely in industrial and agricultural production. Poplars are easily damaged by Micromelalopha troglodyta and Hyphantria cunea, resulting in decreasing quality. Bt toxin-encoded by the Cry gene has been widely adopted in poplar breeding because of its strong insect resistance. There is still no comprehensive and sufficient information about the effects of Cry1Ah1-modified (CM) poplars on the ecological environment. Here, we sampled the rhizosphere soils of field-grown CM and non-transgenic (NT) poplars and applied 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer amplicon Illumina MiSeq sequencing to determine the bacterial community associated with the CM and NT poplars. Based on the high-throughput sequencing of samples, we found that the predominant taxa included Proteobacteria (about 40% of the total bacteria), Acidobacteria (about 20% of the total bacteria), and Actinobacteria (about 20% of the total bacteria) collected from the natural rhizosphere of NT and CM poplars. In addition, studies on the microbial diversity of poplar showed that Cry1Ah1 expression has no significant influence on rhizosphere soil alkaline nitrogen, but significantly affects soil phosphorus, soil microbial biomass nitrogen, and carbon. The results exhibited a similar bacterial community structure between CM varieties affected by the expression of Cry1Ah1 and non-transgenic poplars. In addition, Cry1Ah1 expression revealed no significant influence on the composition of rhizosphere microbiomes. These results broadly reflect the effect of the Bt toxin-encoded by Cry1Ah1 on the ecology and environment and provide a clear path for researchers to continue research in this field in the future.

Effects of ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim, and amoxicillin on microbial structure and growth as emerging pollutants reaching crop soils

The presence of emerging pollutants, and specifically antibiotics, in agricultural soils has increased notably in recent decades, causing growing concern as regards potential environmental and health issues. With this in mind, the current study focuses on evaluating the toxicity exerted by three antibiotics (amoxicillin, trimethoprim, and ciprofloxacin) on the growth of soil bacterial communities, when these pollutants are present at different doses, and considered in the short, medium, and long terms (1, 8 and 42 days of incubation). Specifically, the research was carried out in 12 agricultural soils having different physicochemical characteristics and was performed by means of the leucine (³H) incorporation method. In addition, changes in the structure of soil microbial communities at 8 and 42 days were studied in four of these soils, using the phospholipids of fatty acids method for this. The main results indicate that the most toxic antibiotic was amoxicillin, followed by trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin. The results also show that the toxicity of amoxicillin decreases with time, with values of Log IC₅₀ ranging from 0.07 ± 0.05 to 3.43 ± 0.08 for day 1, from 0.95 ± 0.07 to 3.97 ± 0.15 for day 8, and from 2.05 ± 0.03 to 3.18 ± 0.04 for day 42, during the incubation period. Regarding trimethoprim, 3 different behaviors were observed: for some soils the growth of soil bacterial communities was not affected, for a second group of soils trimethoprim toxicity showed dose-response effects that remained persistent over time, and, finally, for a third group of soils the toxicity of trimethoprim increased over time, being greater for longer incubation times (42 days). As regards ciprofloxacin, this antibiotic did not show a toxicity effect on the growth of soil bacterial communities for any of the soils or incubation times studied. Furthermore, the principal component analysis performed with the phospholipids of fatty acids results demonstrated that the microbial community structure of these agricultural soils, which persisted after 42 days of incubation, depended mainly on soil characteristics and, to a lesser extent, on the dose and type of antibiotic (amoxicillin, trimethoprim or ciprofloxacin). In addition, it was found that, in this research, the application of the three antibiotics to soils usually favored the presence of fungi and Gram-positive bacteria.

Seed Endophyte bacteria enhance drought stress tolerance in Hordeum vulgare by regulating, physiological characteristics, antioxidants and minerals uptake

Growth stimulating bacteria help remediate dry arid soil and plant stress. Here, Pseudomonas sp. and Pantoea sp. we used to study the stress ecology of Hordeum vulgare and the environmental impact of water deficit on soil characteristics, growth, photosynthesis apparatus, mineral acquisition and antioxidiant defense. Plants inoculated with Pseudomonas or Pantoea had significantly higher (about 2 folds) soil carbon flux (soil respiration), chlorophyll levels (18%), net photosynthetic rate (33% in Pantoea and 54% in Pseudomonas), (44%) stomatal conductance than uninoculated plants in stressed conditions. Both bacterial strains improved leaf growth (23-29%) and root development under well-watered conditions but reduced around (25%) root biomass under drought. Plants inoculated with Pseudomonas or Pantoea under drought also increased of about 27% leaf respiration and transpiration (48%) but decreased water use efficiency, photoinhibition (91%), and the risk of oxidative stress (ETR/A) (49%). Drought stress increased most of the studied antioxidant enzymatic activities in the plants inoculated with Pseudomonas or Pantoea, which reduce the membrane damage and protect plants form oxidative defenses. Drought stress increased K⁺ acquisition around 50% in both shoots inoculated with Pseudomonas or Pantoea relative to non-stressed plants. Plants inoculated with Pseudomonas or Pantoea increased shoot Na⁺ while root Na⁺ only increased in plants inoculated with Pseudomonas in stressed conditions. Drought stress increased shoot Mg²⁺ in plants inoculated with Pseudomonas or Pantoea but did not affect Ca²⁺ relative to non-stressed plants. Drought stress increased about 70% K⁺/Na⁺ ratio only in plants inoculated with Pseudomonas relative to non-stressed plants. Our results indicate that inoculating barley with the studied bacterial strains increases plant biomass and can therefore play a role in the environmental remediation of drylands for food production.

Indictors of wetland health improve following small-scale ecological restoration on private land

Globally wetlands are imperilled and restoring these highly productive and biodiverse ecosystems is key to regaining their lost function and health. Much of the fertile, low-lying land that was historically wetland is now farmed, so privately-owned locations play critical roles in regaining space for wetlands. However, wetland restoration on private property is often small-scale and supported by minimal funding and expertise. Little is known about what these efforts achieve, and what contexts facilitate the greatest gains in wetland health. Using a paired plot design for 18 restored and 18 unrestored wetlands, we aimed to understand changes in wetland health following restoration on private property. We characterised plant and microbial communities and soil characteristics following wetland restoration and explored how environmental settings of restored wetlands related to the clustering of wetland health indicators. We found that all indicators of wetland health significantly increased following restoration except for the ratio of Gram negative to Gram positive bacteria. Restoration enhanced plant alpha and beta diversity, adding ~13 native plant species per plot. Soils in restored wetlands contained 20% more organic matter, and 25% more microbial biomass, which was driven by an increased abundance of fungi. Restoration reduced soil bulk density by 0.19 g^-1 cm³ and Olsen Phosphorus by 23%. These effects on soil physical characteristics and microbial communities were strongest in the wettest locations. Restored wetlands clustered into three main groups based on indicators of wetland health. Hydrological flow explained the clustering of wetlands, with riverine wetlands exhibiting greater indicators of recovery than depressional wetlands, suggesting that hydrological flow may influence post-restoration recovery. Overall, this study shows that small-scale wetland restoration on private land improved wetland health, providing evidence that it can be an effective use of marginal agricultural land.

Wild Panax plants adapt to their thermal environment by harboring abundant beneficial seed endophytic bacteria

The seed microbiome of crop wild relatives is a potential reservoir of beneficial traits that potentially improve their host plant resilience to fluctuating environments and pathogenic threats. Herein, we studied the seed microbiome of three species of the medicinal genus Panax (P. vietnamensis, P. japonicas, and P. stipuleanatus) collected from seven locations in Southwest China. We used qPCR and metabarcoding high-throughput sequencing to target both endophytic bacteria and fungi. Seed bacterial absolute abundance (1.1 × 109∼1.0 × 107 gene copy numbers per gram seed) was substantially higher than that of fungi (7.6 × 105∼3.7 × 102). Host plant genotype was the main driver of seed microbiome composition for both bacteria and fungi. Panax growing hypothermal environments significantly shaped their seed endophytic bacterial but not fungal microbiota. The three Panax species’ seeds harbored unique microbes [averaged ∼150 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs)], sharing only 12 bacterial ASVs (half affiliated to Halomonas) and four fungal ASVs. Network analysis showed that the Panax seed endophytic bacteria tend to form inter-weaved functional modules that are majorly connected by core members from the genus Halomonas, Pseudomonas, and Pantoea. These genera have been associated with nutrient cycling, plant, disease suppression, and tolerance to environmental fluctuation. Together, these novel insights may shade light on the ecological strategies of wild Panax plants adaptation to their thermal environment by possessing abundant beneficial seed endophytic bacteria.

Drivers and trends of global soil microbial carbon over two decades

Soil microorganisms are central to sustain soil functions and services, like carbon and nutrient cycling. Currently, we only have a limited understanding of the spatial-temporal dynamics of soil microorganisms, restricting our ability to assess long-term effects of climate and land-cover change on microbial roles in soil biogeochemistry. This study assesses the temporal trends in soil microbial biomass carbon and identifies the main drivers of biomass change regionally and globally to detect the areas sensitive to these environmental factors. Here, we combined a global soil microbial biomass carbon data set, random forest modelling, and environmental layers to predict spatial-temporal dynamics of microbial biomass carbon stocks from 1992 to 2013. Soil microbial biomass carbon stocks decreased globally by 3.4 ± 3.0% (mean ± 95% CI) between 1992 and 2013 for the predictable regions, equivalent to 149 Mt being lost over the period, or ~1‰ of soil C. Northern areas with high soil microbial carbon stocks experienced the strongest decrease, mostly driven by increasing temperatures. In contrast, land-cover change was a weaker global driver of change in microbial carbon, but had, in some cases, important regional effects.

Effects of Forest Gaps on the Structure and Diversity of Soil Bacterial Communities in Weeping Cypress Forest Plantations

The decline in forest ecological function caused by pure forest plantations planted in the Yangtze River basin is becoming increasingly serious. To investigate this problem, we selected the local low-efficiency weeping cypress plantations for forest gap transformation. Three forest gap sizes, specifically large, medium, and small gaps, were established, and the effects of gap sizes on soil bacterial community structure and diversity in winter and summer were studied compared to no gaps (CK; control). Compared to CK, forest gaps had a significant effect on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (TN), and the highest values of SOC and soil TN under two seasons occurred in large forest gaps. The interactions of forest gap sizes and seasons had significant effects on pH, SOC, TN, and alpha diversity indices, including Simpson, Chao1, and ACE indices. Compared to winter, forest gaps significantly increased the soil bacterial community diversity indices in summer. Forest gap sizes significantly affected the composition of the bacterial community, but the composition of the dominant bacteria at the phyla and genera levels was similar. Linear discriminant effect size (LEfSe) analysis showed that there were 32 indicator bacterial species in two seasons. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the relationship of the soil bacterial community at the phyla level was complex, and there was a significant positive correlation among bacterial species. Soil bulk density (BD) and soil moisture (SM) significantly affected the soil bacterial alpha diversity indices. The composition of the dominant bacteria at the phyla level was significantly affected by soil microbial carbon (MBC), whereas the composition of dominant bacteria at the genera level was affected by soil hydrolysable nitrogen (AN) and the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio. In this study, compared to the other forest gaps, large forest gaps were more conducive to the accumulation of soil nutrients, thus improving the structure of the soil bacterial community. Importantly, changes in the soil bacterial community structure due to gap formation may have profound effects on soil biogeochemical processes in weeping cypress forest plantations.

Climate-Resilient Microbial Biotechnology: A Perspective on Sustainable Agriculture

We designed this review to describe a compilation of studies to enlighten the concepts of plant–microbe interactions, adopted protocols in smart crop farming, and biodiversity to reaffirm sustainable agriculture. The ever-increasing use of agrochemicals to boost crop production has created health hazards to humans and the environment. Microbes can bring up the hidden strength of plants, augmenting disease resistance and yield, hereafter, crops could be grown without chemicals by harnessing microbes that live in/on plants and soil. This review summarizes an understanding of the functions and importance of indigenous microbial communities; host–microbial and microbial–microbial interactions; simplified experimentally controlled synthetic flora used to perform targeted operations; maintaining the molecular mechanisms; and microbial agent application technology. It also analyzes existing problems and forecasts prospects. The real advancement of microbiome engineering requires a large number of cycles to obtain the necessary ecological principles, precise manipulation of the microbiome, and predictable results. To advance this approach, interdisciplinary collaboration in the areas of experimentation, computation, automation, and applications is required. The road to microbiome engineering seems to be long; however, research and biotechnology provide a promising approach for proceeding with microbial engineering and address persistent social and environmental issues.

Nitrogen addition exerts a stronger effect than elevated temperature on soil available nitrogen and relation to soil microbial properties in the rhizosphere of Camellia sinensis L. seedlings

As the global climate changes, elevated atmospheric temperature and nitrogen (N) deposition co-occur in natural ecosystems, which affects rhizosphere soil nutrient by altering allocation of roots and its availability to soil microorganism. Elevated temperature in combination with N deposition is expected to affect soil available N and its relation to microbial properties, but this issue has not been extensively examined. Here, we investigated soil available N and its relation to microbial properties in rhizosphere of Camellia sinensis L. seedlings exposed to elevated temperature using a passive warming device in combination with N-added soil. Elevated temperature did not significantly affect soil pH, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), the ratio of carbon and nitrogen (C:N ratio), total phosphorus (TP), available N ((N in ammonium (NH₄⁺-N) and N in nitrate (NO₃^--N)) (NH₄⁺-N + NO₃^--N)/TN, α-glucosidase (αG), β-glucosidase (βG), cellobiohydrolase (CBH), N-acetyl-glucosaminidase (NAG), and phenol oxidase (PPO) activities, while significantly stimulated root total length of tea seedlings (3.9%), root dry biomass (10.2%), soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) (7.4%), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) (8.6%), and acid phosphatase (ACP) (8.8%). While N addition significantly (p < 0.05) stimulated root dry biomass of tea seedlings (14.1%), root total length (6.2%), root average diameter (6.7%), soil TN, available N, (NH₄⁺-N + NO₃^--N)/TN, and MBN under elevated temperature. Soil aG, βG, CBH, and ACP activity increase significantly (p < 0.05) under elevated temperature + N relative to elevated temperature alone. Generally, N addition led to increased available nitrogen and microbial properties in rhizosphere soil of tea seedlings exposed to elevated temperature by stimulating root properties, soil nitrogen, microbial biomass N, and enzyme activity. Redundancy analysis and Pearson correlation analysis suggested that N addition lead to higher correlation between soil available N and microbial properties exposed to elevated temperature. Our results indicated nitrogen addition exerts a stronger effect than elevated temperature on soil fertility and microbiological cycle in the rhizosphere of Camellia sinensis L. seedlings. The conclusion helps us understand the response mechanism of soil rhizosphere microenvironment to N deposition under global warming scenarios.

The Microbiome Structure of a Rice-Crayfish Integrated Breeding Model and Its Association with Crayfish Growth and Water Quality

The rice-crayfish (RC) integrated breeding model is an important and special agricultural ecosystem that provides a unique ecological environment for exploring the microbial diversity, composition, and functional capacity. To date, little is known about the effect of the breeding model on microbiome assembly and breeding model-specific microbiome composition and the association of the microbiome with water quality and crayfish growth. In the present study, we assessed the taxonomic shifts in gut and water microbiomes and their associations with water quality and crayfish growth in the RC and crayfish monoculture (CM) breeding models across six time points of rice growth, including seedling (a), tillering and jointing (b), blooming (c), filling (d), fruiting (e), and rotting of rice residues (f). Dominant bacterial phyla, such as Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes, were detected in both gut and water microbiomes across breeding models. Notably, the diversity and structure of the gut and water microbiomes significantly (P < 0.001) differed between the RC and CM models, with higher microbial diversity being noted in the RC model than in the CM model. The taxa enriched in the RC model included Bacillus sp., Streptomyces sp., Lactobacillus sp., Prevotella sp., Rhodobacter sp., Bifidobacterium sp., Akkermansia sp., and Lactococcus sp., some of which are potentially beneficial to animals. However, opportunistic pathogens, such as Citrobacter sp. and Aeromonas sp., were depleted in the RC model. Furthermore, in the RC model, the enriched taxa that formed complex cooccurrence networks showed a significant positive correlation with water quality and crayfish growth, whereas the depleted taxa showed a significant negative correlation with water quality and crayfish growth. These results suggest that the RC model has a better microbiome composition and that RC model-specific microbes could play important roles in improving crayfish growth and water quality.

IMPORTANCE The present study comprehensively compared two different breeding models in terms of their microbiome composition and the associations of the microbiomes with crayfish growth and water quality. RC model-specific microbiome composition was identified; these microbes were found to have a positive association with water quality and crayfish growth. These results provide valuable information for guiding microbial isolation and culture and for potentially harnessing the power of the microbiome to improve crayfish production and health and water quality.

Do the Reclaimed Fungal Communities Succeed Toward the Original Structure in Eco-Fragile Regions of Coal Mining Disturbances? A Case Study in North China Loess—Aeolian Sand Area

Mining activity has caused serious environmental damage, particularly for soil ecosystems. How the soil fungal community evolves in mine reclamation and what are the succession patterns of molecular ecological networks still needs to be studied in depth. We used high-throughput sequencing to explore the changes in soil fungal communities, molecular ecological networks, and interactions with soil environmental factors in five different ages (the including control group) during 14 years of reclamation in eco-fragile mines. The results showed that the abundance and diversity of soil fungi after 14 years of reclamation were close to, but still lower than, those in the undisturbed control area, but the dominant phylum was Ascomycota. Soil nitrate-N, C/N ratio, pH, and water content significantly affected the fungal community with increasing reclamation ages. Moreover, we found that Mortierellomycota, despite its high relative abundance, had little significant connectivity with other species in the molecular ecological network. Fungal molecular ecological networks evolve with increasing ages of reclamation, with larger modules, more positive connections, and tighter networks, forming large modules of more than 60 nodes by age 9. The large modules were composed mainly of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, which can form mycorrhiza with plant roots, and are not only capable of degrading pollution but are also “encouraged” by most (more than 64%) physicochemical factors in the soil environment. The results can provide a basis for scientific mine ecological restoration, especially for eco-fragile regions.

Effect of Rhizobacteria Inoculation via Soil and Seeds on Glycine max L. Plants Grown on Soils with Different Cropping History

Field experiments testing the effect of phosphate-solubilizing rhizobacteria (PSRB) should consider the cropping history and the method used to inoculate the strains. We evaluated the hypothesis that PSRB previously isolated from soybean seedlings could be effective in promoting growth in this oilseed crop in soils with different cultivation periods. We also evaluated whether this growth promotion could be influenced by cultivation histories or the inoculation method (via seeds or soil). Thus, we conducted an experiment in five fields cultivating Glycine max during two seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021), to test the effectiveness of PSRB (SAF9-Brevibacillus sp., SAF11-Brevibacillus sp., and SAC36-Bacillus velezensis) compared with results observed for the inoculant BiomaPhos (mix of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus megaterium). The present study was based on the evaluation of vegetative growth, nutritional and yield parameters, and microbial biomass carbon (MBC). PSRB were more effective than, or showed similar effectiveness to, BiomaPhos for most of the evaluated vegetative, nutritional, and yield characteristics. In the fields tested in the summer 2019/2020 crop, SAC36 and SAF9 strains stood out as growth promoters, whereas in the 2020/2021 crop, SAF11, SAC36, and BiomaPhos were notable. There did not seem to be a direct relationship between long histories of soybean cultivation as a monoculture and low yield in the field. However, yield seems to be associated with soil nutritional characters such as Ca, Mg, K, P, cation exchange capacity, and organic matter levels. PSRB inoculation positively affected nodulation (NN) and nodule dry mass (NDM) in the evaluated fields in the 2019/2020 crop, and the aerial part dry mass (APDM), NN, NDM, yield, and MBC of the evaluated fields in the 2020/2021 crop. In contrast, the inoculation method was observed to have a strong effect on APDM, NN, root dry mass, and MBC, as the plants inoculated via seed showed higher mean values than those in the plants inoculated via soil. This study demonstrated the growth-promoting potential of new phosphate-solubilizing strains, which may eventually be incorporated by the biostimulants market to freely compete with BiomaPhos.

Land Use, Landform, and Soil Management as Determinants of Soil Physicochemical Properties and Microbial Abundance of Lower Brahmaputra Valley, India

Due to the shifting course of the Brahmaputra River, the fluvial landforms of the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam, India, are prone to changes in landform and land use. For sustainable soil management under such conditions, it is crucial to have information about soil physicochemical and biological properties for different land uses. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial population across five major land uses under different landforms, such as paddy fields, banana systems, and arecanut cultivations in the alluvial plains; and rubber plantations and sal forests in the uplands, with varying slope gradients and soil depths (0–25 cm and 25–50 cm) in the lower Brahmaputra Valley. The results of the analysis of variance revealed that the effects of different landforms and land uses were found to be statistically significant on very labile soil organic carbon (VLSOC), available K, B, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu, and soil moisture content across two different soil depths. Paddy cultivated systems recorded the highest (1.23%) soil organic carbon (SOC), but these levels were statistically at par with other land use scenarios except for banana systems; whereas, forests and rubber plantations showed the highest VLSOC (0.38% and 0.34%, respectively,) and were significantly different from other land use scenarios. All soil microbial populations (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes) studied varied significantly in different land uses across varying soil depths. Perennial land uses under arecanut, rubber, and forest cultivations showed significantly higher microbial populations than paddy and banana systems. The principal component analysis (PCA) identified SOC, VLSOC, Cu, K, B, P, and the bacteria count as the major soil quality parameters of the study area. The results showed that landforms, land use, and management practices collectively affect soil properties. Therefore, soil management choices should take into consideration the landforms and land use for maintaining soil health and its sustainability.

Application of Bioorganic Fertilizer on Panax notoginseng Improves Plant Growth by Altering the Rhizosphere Microbiome Structure and Metabolism

Bioorganic fertilizers can alleviate (a) biotic stresses and sustainably increase crop yields. The effect of bioorganic fertilizers on the rhizosphere bacterial community of Panax notoginseng and soil metabolism remains unknown. Here, we tracked the changes in the soil physicochemical properties, bacterial microbiota responses, and soil metabolic functions after the addition of a bioorganic fertilizer in a P. notoginseng field. The application of a bioorganic fertilizer reduced the soil acidification, improved the organic matter, and increased the contents of the total/available soil nutrients. Soil amendment with a bioorganic fertilizer significantly affected the structure of the rhizosphere bacterial community, leading to the enrichment of specific bacterial consortia such as Rhodanobacter, Arthrobacter, Sphingomonas, Devosia, Pseudolabrys, Luteimonas, Lysobacter, Nitrosospira, and Nakamurella. Previously, many of these genera have been associated with nutrient cycling, plant productivity, and disease suppression. Metabolome analysis further highlighted that the bioorganic fertilizer treatment significantly reduced phenolic acids and flavonoids and enhanced organic acids, saccharides and alcohols, and amino acids. This result indicates a high survival of bacterial microbiota in the rhizosphere and an availability of nutrients for P. notoginseng growth. This work showed that the application of bioorganic fertilizers significantly improves soil health status, alters soil metabolic functions, and stimulates a specific subset of rhizosphere microbiota for nutrient cycling and disease protection in P. notoginseng.

Fertilization and Soil Microbial Community: A Review

The present paper reviews the most recent advances regarding the effects of chemical and organic fertilizers on soil microbial communities. Based on the results from the articles considered, some details are presented on how the use of various types of fertilizers affects the composition and activity of soil microbial communities. Soil microbes have different responses to fertilization based on differences in the total carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents in the soil, along with soil moisture and the presence of plant species. These articles show that the use of chemical fertilizers changes the abundance of microbial populations and stimulates their growth thanks to the nutrient supply added. Overall, however, the data revealed that chemical fertilizers have no significant influence on the richness and diversity of the bacteria and fungi. Instead, the abundance of individual bacterial or fungal species was sensitive to fertilization and was mainly attributed to the changes in the soil chemical properties induced by chemical or organic fertilization. Among the negative effects of chemical fertilization, the decrease in enzymatic activity has been highlighted by several papers, especially in soils that have received the largest amounts of fertilizers together with losses in organic matter.

Structural, inorganic, and adsorptive properties of hydrochars obtained by hydrothermal carbonization of coffee waste

The hydrothermal carbonization process is a suitable process for the conversion of potentially harmful lignocellulosic waste into hydrochars. Defective coffee beans were the precursor raw material for hydrochar synthesis. Reactions were performed in a high-pressure reactor at 150, 200, and 250 °C, in autogenous pressure, for 40 min. Hydrochars were recovered by filtration and characterized by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Methylene blue adsorption tests were performed and analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Adsorption mechanisms were investigated by computational calculations at DFT level. Results suggest that hydrochars from defective coffee beans can be applied as technological resources in the agronomic and environmental fields due to their inorganic composition, mainly to high magnesium content, the structural characteristics of porosity, biodegradation control, soil carbon-fixation and adsorption capacity. Important adsorption processes are caused by the development of oxygenated functional groups on the hydrochar surface.

Biofertilizers: An ecofriendly technology for nutrient recycling and environmental sustainability

Agriculture plays an important role in a country's economy. In modern intensive agricultural practices, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are applied on large scale to increase crop production in order to meet the nutritional requirements of the ever-increasing world population. However, rapid urbanization with shrinking agricultural lands, dramatic change in climatic conditions and extensive use of agrochemicals in agricultural practices has been found to cause environmental disturbances and public health hazards affecting food security and sustainability in agriculture. Besides this, agriculture soils are continuously losing their quality and physical properties as well as their chemical (imbalance of nutrients) and biological health due to indiscriminate use of agrochemicals. Plant-associated microbes with their plant growth- promoting traits have enormous potential to solve these challenges and play a crucial role in enhancing plant biomass and crop yield under greenhouse and field conditions. The beneficial mechanisms of plant growth improvement include enhanced availability of nutrients (i.e., N, P, K, Zn and S), phytohormone modulation, biocontrol of phytopathogens and amelioration of biotic and abiotic stresses. This plant-microbe interplay is indispensable for sustainable agriculture and these microbes may perform essential role as an ecological engineer to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. Various steps involved for production of solid-based or liquid biofertilizer formulation include inoculum preparation, addition of cell protectants such as glycerol, lactose, starch, a good carrier material, proper packaging and best delivery methods. In addition, recent developments of formulation include entrapment/microencapsulation, nano-immobilization of microbial bioinoculants and biofilm-based biofertilizers. Thus, inoculation with beneficial microbes has emerged as an innovative eco-friendly technology to feed global population with available resources. This review critically examines the current state-of-art on use of microbial strains as biofertilizers in different crop systems for sustainable agriculture and in maintaining soil fertility and enhancing crop productivity. It is believed that acquisition of advanced knowledge of plant-PGPR interactions, bioengineering of microbial communities to improve the performance of biofertilizers under field conditions, will help in devising strategies for sustainable, environment-friendly and climate smart agricultural technologies to deliver short and long terms solutions for improving crop productivity to feed the world in a more sustainable manner.

Modern intensive agricultural practices face numerous challenges that pose major threats to global food security. In order to address the nutritional requirements of the ever-increasing world population, chemical fertilizers and pesticides are applied on large scale to increase crop production. However, the injudicious use of agrochemicals has resulted in environmental pollution leading to public health hazards. Moreover, agriculture soils are continuously losing their quality and physical properties as well as their chemical (imbalance of nutrients) and biological health. Plant-associated microbes with their plant growth- promoting traits have enormous potential to solve these challenges and play a crucial role in enhancing plant biomass and crop yield. The beneficial mechanisms of plant growth improvement include enhanced nutrient availability, phytohormone modulation, biocontrol of phytopathogens and amelioration of biotic and abiotic stresses.
