Environmental microbes alleviate antibiotic disturbance on plant endophytes in aquatic microcosms: Prospects for conferring fitness benefits

Antibiotic pollution in water environment is an emerging threat to plant health. Developing efficient strategies to reassemble the antibiotic-tolerating endophytes will confer fitness benefits on host plants to alleviate antibiotic stress. Here, introducing environmental microbes was proved as a promising approach to reshape the antibiotic-tolerating plant endophytes under antibiotic stress in aquatic microcosms. The introduction of environmental microbes effectively relieved antibiotic-driven perturbation on plant endophytes, with reduced changes in bacterial diversity and differential bacterial taxa and functional genes. Moreover, introducing environmental microbes facilitated the enrichment of endophytic bacterial genera and functional genes related to drug metabolism, which possessed the potentials to degrade antibiotics. In addition, environmental microbes boosted antibiotic-reshaped endophytes to form more stable bacterial networks for stronger antibiotic tolerance. In consequence, the decreased growth inhibition of antibiotics on host plants and enhanced antibiotic removal from microcosms were achieved by introducing environmental microbes. These findings pursue environmental microbes as practical resources to assist plants in reshaping the stress-alleviating endophytes, potentially improving plant tolerance to water pollution.

Fate of emerging antibiotics in soil-plant systems: A case on fluoroquinolones

Fluoroquinolones (FQs), a class of broad-spectrum antibiotics widely used to treat human and animal diseases globally, have limited adsorption and are often excreted unchanged or as metabolites. These compounds enter the soil environment through feces, urban wastewater, or discharge of biological solids. The fluorine atoms in FQs impart high electronegativity, chemical stability, and resistance to microbial degradation, allowing them to potentially enter food chains. The persistence of FQs in soils raises questions about their impacts on plant growth, an aspect not yet conclusively determined. We reviewed whether, like other organic compounds, FQs are actively absorbed by plants, resulting in bioaccumulation and posing threats to human health. The influx of FQs has led to antibiotic resistance in soil microbes by exerting selective pressure and contributing to multidrug-resistant bacteria. Therefore, the environmental risks of FQs warrant further attention. This work provides a comprehensive review of the fate and behavior of FQs at the plant-environment interface, their migration and transport from the environment into plants, and associated toxicity. Current limitations in research are discussed and prospects for future investigations outlined. Thus, understanding antibiotic behavior in plants and translocation within tissues is not only crucial for ecosystem health (plant health), but also assessing potential human health risks. In addition, it can offer insights into the fate of emerging soil pollutants in plant-soil systems.

Wastewater reuse and pharmaceutical pollution in agriculture: Uptake, transport, accumulation and metabolism of pharmaceutical pollutants within plants

The presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water sources has become a growing concern due to its potential impacts on human health and other organisms. The physicochemical properties of pharmaceuticals based on their intended therapeutical application, which include antibiotics, hormones, analgesics, and antidepressants, is quite diverse. Their presence in wastewater, sewerage water, surface water, ground water and even in drinking water is reported by many researchers throughout the world. Human exposure to these pollutants through drinking water or consumption of aquatic and terrestrial organisms has raised concerns about potential adverse effects, such as endocrine disruption, antibiotic resistance, and developmental abnormalities. Once in the environment, they can persist, undergo transformation, or degrade, leading to a complex mixture of contaminants. Application of treated wastewater, compost, manures or biosolids in agricultural fields introduce pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment. As pharmaceuticals are diverse in nature, significant differences are observed during their uptake and accumulation in plants. While there have been extensive studies on aquatic ecosystems, the effect on agricultural land is more disparate. As of now, there are few reports available on the potential of plant uptake and transportation of pharmaceuticals within and between plant organs. This review summarizes the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic water bodies at a range of concentrations and their uptake, accumulation, and transport within plant tissues. Research gaps on pharmaceutical pollutants' specific effect on plant growth and future research scopes are highlighted. The factors affecting uptake of pharmaceuticals including hydrophobicity, ionization, physicochemical properties (pKa, logKow, pH, Henry's law constant) are discussed. Finally, metabolism of pharmaceuticals within plant cells through metabolism phase enzymes and plant responses to pharmaceuticals are reviewed.

The Potential of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas for the Direct Degradation of Organic Pollutants Derived from the Food Production Industry

Specialized chemicals are used for intensifying food production, including boosting meat and crop yields. Among the applied formulations, antibiotics and pesticides pose a severe threat to the natural balance of the ecosystem, as they either contribute to the development of multidrug resistance among pathogens or exhibit ecotoxic and mutagenic actions of a persistent character. Recently, cold atmospheric pressure plasmas (CAPPs) have emerged as promising technologies for degradation of these organic pollutants. CAPP-based technologies show eco-friendliness and potency for the removal of organic pollutants of diverse chemical formulas and different modes of action. For this reason, various types of CAPP-based systems are presented in this review and assessed in terms of their constructions, types of discharges, operating parameters, and efficiencies in the degradation of antibiotics and persistent organic pollutants. Additionally, the key role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) is highlighted. Moreover, optimization of the CAPP operating parameters seems crucial to effectively remove contaminants. Finally, the CAPP-related paths and technologies are further considered in terms of biological and environmental effects associated with the treatments, including changes in antibacterial properties and toxicity of the exposed solutions, as well as the potential of the CAPP-based strategies for limiting the spread of multidrug resistance.

Unlocking the potential of glyphosate-resistant bacterial strains in biodegradation and maize growth

Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)-glycine] is a non-selective herbicide with a broad spectrum activity that is commonly used to control perennial vegetation in agricultural fields. The widespread utilization of glyphosate in agriculture leads to soil, water, and food crop contamination, resulting in human and environmental health consequences. Therefore, it is imperative to devise techniques for enhancing the degradation of glyphosate in soil. Rhizobacteria play a crucial role in degrading organic contaminants. Limited work has been done on exploring the capabilities of indigenously existing glyphosate-degrading rhizobacteria in Pakistani soils. This research attempts to discover whether native bacteria have the glyphosate-degrading ability for a sustainable solution to glyphosate contamination. Therefore, this study explored the potential of 11 native strains isolated from the soil with repeated glyphosate application history and showed resistance against glyphosate at higher concentrations (200 mg kg-1). Five out of eleven strains outperformed in glyphosate degradation and plant growth promotion. High-pressure liquid chromatography showed that, on average, these five strains degraded 98% glyphosate. In addition, these strains promote maize seed germination index and shoot and root fresh biomass up to 73 and 91%, respectively. Furthermore, inoculation gave an average increase of acid phosphatase (57.97%), alkaline phosphatase (1.76-fold), and dehydrogenase activity (1.75-fold) in glyphosate-contaminated soil. The findings indicated the importance of using indigenous rhizobacteria to degrade glyphosate. Therefore, by maintaining soil health, indigenous soil biodiversity can work effectively for the bioremediation of contaminated soils and sustainable crop production in a world facing food security.

The silver lining of antibiotic resistance: Bacterial-mediated reduction of tetracycline plant stress via antibiotrophy

The reuse of water using effluents containing antibiotics from anthropogenic activities has been mainly linked to the development of antibiotic resistance. However, we report that the development of bacterial tolerance promotes plant growth. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the efficiency of inoculation of a new antibiotic-degrading bacterium, Erwinia strain S9, in augmenting the tolerance of pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants to tetracycline (TET) (10 and 20 mg/L). Physiological parameters such as tissue elongation and biomass, as well as relative water content, were remarkably lower in plants exposed to TET than in the control. The inhibitory effects of TET were associated with reduced CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, transpiration, dark respiration, and light saturation point (LSP). High concentrations of TET-induced oxidative stress are attested by the overproduction of superoxide radicals (O2•-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydroxyl radicals (HO•), resulting in increased malondialdehyde content and cell death. The high activity of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and guaiacol peroxidase validated the proposed mechanism. Under TET stress conditions, supplementation with Erwinia strain S9 was beneficial to pea plants through osmotic adjustment, increased nutrient uptake, gas exchange optimization, and increased antioxidant activities. Its presence not only ensures plant survival and growth during antibiotic stress but also degrades TET via significant antibiotrophy. This strategy is a cost-effective environmental chemical engineering tool that can be used to depollute wastewater or to improve crop resistance in rhizofiltration treatment when treated wastewater is reused for irrigation.

Polystyrene microplastic attenuated the toxic effects of florfenicol on rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings in hydroponics: From the perspective of oxidative response, phototoxicity and molecular metabolism

Antibiotics and microplastics (MPs) are two emerging pollutants in agroecosystems, however the effects of co-exposure to antibiotics and MPs remain unclear. The toxicity of florfenicol (FF) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on rice seedlings was investigated. FF and PS-MPs caused colloidal agglomeration, which changed the environmental behavior of FF. FF inhibited rice growth and altered antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase) activities, leading to membrane lipid peroxidation; impaired photosynthetic systems, decreased photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, and carotene), chlorophyll precursors (Proto IX, Mg-Proto IX, and Pchlide), photosynthetic and respiratory rates. The key photosynthesis related genes (PsaA, PsaB, PsbA, PsbB, PsbC, and PsbD) were significantly down-regulated. The ultrastructure of mesophyll cells was destroyed with chloroplast swelling, membrane surface blurring, irregular thylakoid lamellar structure, and number of peroxisomes increased. PS-MPs mitigated FF toxicity, and the IBR index values showed that 10 mg∙L-1 PS-MPs were more effective. Metabolomic analysis revealed that the abundance of metabolites and metabolic pathways were altered by FF, was greater than the combined "MPs-FF" contamination. The metabolism of amino acids, sugars, and organic acids were severely interfered. Among these, 15 metabolic pathways were significantly altered, with the most significant effects on phenylalanine metabolism and the citric acid cycle (p < 0.05).

Enhanced degradation of herbicides in groundwater using sulfur-containing reductants and spinel zinc ferrite activated persulfate

A challenge to successfully implementing an injection-based remedial treatment in aquifers is to ensure that the oxidative reaction is efficient and lasts long enough to contact the contaminated plume. Our objective was to determine the efficacy of zinc ferrite nanocomposites (ZnFe2O4) and sulfur-containing reductants (SCR) (i.e., dithionite; DTN and bisulfite; BS) to co-activate persulfate (S2O82-; PS) and treat herbicide-contaminated water. We also evaluated the ecotoxicity of the treated water. While both SCRs delivered excellent PS activation in a 1:0.4 ratio (PS:SCR), the reaction was relatively short-lived. By including ZnFe2O4 in the PS/BS or PS/DTN activations, herbicide degradation rates dramatically increased by factors of 2.5 to 11.3. This was due to the SO4- and OH reactive radical species that formed. Radical scavenging experiments and ZnFe2O4 XPS spectra results revealed that SO4- was the dominant reactive species that originated from S(IV)/PS activation in solution and from the Fe(II)/PS activation that occurred on the ZnFe2O4 surface. Based on liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), atrazine and alachlor degradation pathways are proposed that involve both dehydration and hydroxylation. In 1-D column experiments, five different treatment scenarios were run using 14C-labeled and unlabeled atrazine, and 3H2O to quantify changes in breakthrough curves. Our results confirmed that ZnFe2O4 successfully prolonged the PS oxidative treatment despite the SCR being completely dissociated. Toxicity testing showed treated 14C-atrazine was more biodegradable than the parent compound in soil microcosms. Post-treatment water (25 %, v/v) also had less impact on both Zea Mays L. and Vigna radiata L. seedling growth, but more impact on root anatomies, while ≤4 % of the treated water started to exert cytotoxicity (<80 % viability) on ELT3 cell lines. Overall, the findings confirm that ZnFe2O4/SCR/PS reaction is efficient and relatively longer lasting in treating herbicide-contaminated groundwater.

Adsorptive-Photocatalytic Performance for Antibiotic and Personal Care Product Using Cu0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4

The amount of antibiotics and personal care products entering local sewage systems and ultimately natural waters is increasing and raising concerns about long-term human health effects. We developed an adsorptive photocatalyst, Cu_0.5Mn_0.5Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles, utilizing co-precipitation and calcination with melamine, and quantified its efficacy in removing paraben and oxytetracycline (OTC). During melamine calcination, Cu_0.5Mn_0.5Fe₂O₄ recrystallized, improving material crystallinity and purity for the adsorptive-photocatalytic reaction. Kinetic experiments showed that all four parabens and OTC were removed within 120 and 45 min. We found that contaminant adsorption and reaction with active radicals occurred almost simultaneously with the photocatalyst. OTC adsorption could be adequately described by the Brouers-Sotolongo kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models. OTC photocatalytic degradation started with a series of reactions at different carbon locations (i.e., decarboxamidation, deamination, dehydroxylation, demethylation, and tautomerization). Further toxicity testing showed that Zea mays L. and Vigna radiata L. shoot indexes were less affected by treated water than root indexes. The Zea mays L. endodermis thickness and area decreased considerably after exposure to the 25% (v/v)-treated water. Overall, Cu_0.5Mn_0.5Fe₂O₄ nanoparticles exhibit a remarkable adsorptive-photocatalytic performance for the degradation of tested antibiotics and personal care products.

Cyanobacteria as a Valuable Natural Resource for Improved Agriculture, Environment, and Plant Protection

Taking into consideration, the challenges faced by the environment and agro-ecosystem make increased for suggestions more reliable methods to help increase food security and deal with difficult environmental problems. Environmental factors play a critical role in the growth, development, and productivity of crop plants. Unfavorable changes in these factors, such as abiotic stresses, can result in plant growth deficiencies, yield reductions, long-lasting damage, and even death of the plants. In reflection of this, cyanobacteria are now considered important microorganisms that can improve the fertility of soils and the productivity of crop plants due to their different features like photosynthesis, great biomass yield, ability to fix the atmospheric N2, capability to grow on non-arable lands, and varied water sources. Furthermore, numerous cyanobacteria consist of biologically active substances like pigments, amino acids, polysaccharides, phytohormones, and vitamins that support plant growth enhancement. Many studies have exposed the probable role of these compounds in the alleviation of abiotic stress in crop plants and have concluded with evidence of physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms that confirm that cyanobacteria can decrease the stress and induce plant growth. This review discussed the promising effects of cyanobacteria and their possible mode of action to control the growth and development of crop plants as an effective method to overcome different stresses.

Oxidative response of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings to quinolone antibiotics and its correlation with phyllosphere microbes and antibiotic resistance genes

With the increasing use of veterinary antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics may enter farmland systems after livestock manure has been composted. However, the phytotoxicity mechanism of antibiotics in crops is still unclear. In this study, the oxidative responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings to three typical quinolone antibiotics and their underlying mechanisms were investigated. The bioconcentration factor values were 1.47, 0.55, and 0.23 in the levofloxacin, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin treatment, respectively. The inhibitory effects on rice seedlings were in the order of levofloxacin > enrofloxacin > norfloxacin, which may be due to the high uptake of levofloxacin. The H₂O₂ level, MDA content, and ion leakage rate increased significantly (p < 0.05), and cell plasmolysis was observed, showing that antibiotics can cause membrane lipid peroxidation and damage the cell membrane structure. Antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase) changed with the antibiotic concentration. Integrated biomarker response analysis showed that levofloxacin caused the greatest oxidative stress in rice seedlings. Transcriptomic analysis identified 5880 differentially expressed genes, and these were annotated as 20 biological functions; the greatest abundances were cellular and metabolic processes, cell part, and membrane part and organelle; SOD and CAT related genes were up-regulated. The richness and diversity of the phyllosphere microbial community decreased significantly (p < 0.05) and the microbiome changed at the phylum and genus levels. The H₂O₂ level was correlated with changes in phyllosphere microbial communities. The number of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements decreased, while their abundance increased. In conclusion, enrofloxacin exposure not only affects the microbial community but may also affect the ARGs carried by microbes. The relative abundance of MGEs and ARGs was significantly positively correlated (R² = 0.760, p = 0.0148), indicating that MGEs can significantly promote the spread of ARGs.

Effect of glyphosate and ciprofloxacin exposure on enteric bacteria of tadpoles

The high load of agrochemicals and antibiotics present in agricultural aquatic environments represents a risk for wildlife. Since enteric bacteria, which play a key role in the physiological functioning of their hosts, are sensitive to a wide variety of pollutants, their study allows to evaluate the health of organisms. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of commercial formulations of a glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) and the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP), individually and in mixture, on the bacterial diversity of the intestinal content of common toad (Rhinella arenarum) tadpoles. The diversity of cultivable fast-growing bacteria with low nutritional requirements was evaluated using classic microbiological tests and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry identification. Bacterial diversity varied among treatments. Taxa diversity increased in the GBH-treated group but decreased in the CIP-treated group. Remarkably, Yersinia spp. and Proteus spp. were only found in the GBH-treated group. The prevalence of Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas spp. decreased in the intestinal microbiota of the GBH-CIP-treated group. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the alteration of cultivable enteric bacteria of autochthonous tadpoles due to two pollutants of emerging concern. Our results demonstrate that R. arenarum tadpoles can be used as non-conventional model organisms for environmental pollution monitoring. Our preliminary findings would contribute to understanding how the presence of GBH and CIP in freshwaters may represent a threat to wildlife and human health by causing enteric dysbiosis of part of the bacterial community.

Physiological responses and phytoremediation capacity of floating and submerged aquatic macrophytes exposed to ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) water contamination is a global concern, having reached disturbing concentrations and threatening the aquatic ecosystems. We investigated the physiological responses and Cipro-phytoremediation capacity of one floating (Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell) and one submerged (Egeria densa Planch.) species of aquatic macrophytes. The plants were exposed to increased concentrations of Cipro (0, 1, 10, and 100 µg.Cipro.L^-1) in artificially contaminated water for 96 and 168 h. Although the antibiotic affected the activities of mitochondrial electron transport chain enzymes, the resulting increases in H₂O₂ concentrations were not associated with oxidative damage or growth reductions, mainly due to the activation of antioxidant systems for both species. In addition to being tolerant to Cipro, after only 96 h, plants were able to reclaim more than 58% of that from the media. The phytoremediation capacity did not differ between the species, however, while S. molesta bioaccumulate, E. densa appears to metabolize Cipro in their tissues. Both macrophytes are indicated for Cipro-phytoremediation projects.

Antioxidant Enzyme and Cytochrome P450 Activities Are Involved in Horseweed (Conyza Sumatrensis) Resistance to Glyphosate

The intensive global use of glyphosate has led to the evolution of glyphosate resistant (GR) weed species, including the economically damaging horseweed (Conyza sumatrensis). We evaluated the glyphosate resistance mechanisms of C. sumatrensis. While 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase activity was similar between the glyphosate resistant (GR) and nonresistant biotypes, plants from the GR population accumulated lower shikimate levels than susceptible ones, suggesting the absence of target-site resistance mechanisms. Decreases over time in glyphosate concentrations in GR leaves were not accompanied by increases in glyphosate concentrations in their stem and roots, indicating lower glyphosate distribution rates in GR plants. The early appearance of aminomethylphosphonic acid (the main glyphosate metabolite) in leaves, as well as its presence only in the stems and roots of GR plants, suggests faster glyphosate metabolism in GR plants than in susceptible ones. GR plants treated with glyphosate also showed greater antioxidant (ascorbate peroxidase [APX] and catalase [CAT]) and cytochrome P450-enzyme activities, indicating their great capacity to avoid glyphosate-induced oxidative stress. Three non-target mechanisms (reduced glyphosate translocation, increased metabolism, and increased antioxidant activity) therefore confer glyphosate resistance in C. sumatrensis plants. This is the first time that APX, CAT and P450-enzyme activities are related to GR in C. sumatrensis.

Migration and toxicity of toltrazuril and its main metabolites in the environment

Veterinary drugs heavily used in livestock are passed into the environment through different ways, resulting in risks to terrestrial environments and humans. The migration of toltrazuril (TOL), an important anticoccidial drug used intensively in livestock, and its main metabolites between the chicken manure compost, soil and vegetables was investigated, and then the impacts of TOL on the soil bacterial community and ARGs, soil enzyme activities and phytotoxicity were detected. In the process of aerobic composting for 80 days, except for toltrazuril sulfoxide (the degradation half-life was 59.74 d), TOL and ponazuril (PON) were not significantly degraded. However, TOL and its metabolites were significantly degraded in fertilized soil, and the degradation half-life was 28.17-346.50 d. Among the three drugs, only PON could migrate from soil to vegetables, and the residual concentrations of PON in lettuce and radish were 2.64-70.02 μg kg-1 and 0-2.80 μg kg-1, respectively. Moreover, TOL and its main metabolisms had no significant effect on the bacterial community structure and the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes during composting, but affected the microbial activity in the soil. The presence of TOL and its main metabolites reduced soil urease activity, increased catalase activity, and decreased alkaline phosphatase activity at the beginning and then increased slightly. They had negative effects on plant growth. Compared with the control group, the inhibition rates of TOL and its metabolites on lettuce and radish seed germination were 8.33% and 26.74% respectively, and the inhibition rates of root elongation length were 25.88% and 34.45% respectively. These results showed that TOL and its main metabolites were ineffectively removed by aerobic composting, and could be migrated from composting to soil and vegetables, which had adverse effects on soil enzyme activity and plant growth. Therefore, its environmental ecological risk and human health risk needs to be further evaluated.

Phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic assessment of glyphosate on Lactuca sativa L

The active ingredient glyphosate is the most commercialized herbicide on the world market due to its capability in eliminating weeds. However, it can harm the development of non-target organisms and threaten environmental quality. This study analyzed the effects of potentially toxic concentrations of glyphosate on germination, growth, cell cycle and genomic stability of Lactuca sativa L., and identified the most sensitive variables for assessing the toxicity of this herbicide to this biomonitor. Seeds of L. sativa were germinated in Petri dishes containing a sheet of filter paper moistened with 5 mL of a concentration of glyphosate (1.34, 3.35, 6.70, 10.05, 13.40 mg L-1). Controls consisted of distilled water (negative) and 3 mg L-1 CuSO4 (positive). Macroscopic and microscopic variables were analyzed. The germination of L. sativa was not affected by the concentrations of glyphosate. Root length and shoot height of the plants and the mitotic index decreased from the lowest concentration tested on. The chromosomal anomaly index and frequency of micronuclei increased by 3.2 and 22 times, respectively, with the presence of the lowest concentration of glyphosate compared to the negative control. The observed phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic effects demonstrate the negative influence that glyphosate has on the development of L. sativa. Root length and microscopic variables showed the highest sensitivity. This study warns of the possible harmful effects that glyphosate can have on non-target organisms and suggests greater control over the use of this herbicide to mitigate its environmental impact.

Evaluating aquatic macrophytes for removing erythromycin from contaminated water: floating or submerged?

Water contamination by antibiotics is an emerging global problem, with impacts on both public health and the environment. Erythromycin has been encountered in bodies of water throughout the world, which demands the development of efficient remediation technologies. We investigated the physiological responses and phytoremediation capacity of four species of aquatic macrophytes, two floating (Salvinia molesta and Lemna minor) and two submerged (Myriophyllum aquaticum and Rotala rotundifolia). The plants were exposed to relevant environmental concentrations of erythromycin (0 and 1.7 µg l^-1) in artificially contaminated water for seven days. Physiological evaluations evidenced the ability of that antibiotic to promote oxidative events in those plants, such as the activation of antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase and/or catalase). S. molesta exposed to erythromycin demonstrated accumulations of hydrogen peroxide and oxidative damage (lipid peroxidation) that was reflected in growth reductions. The erythromycin removal efficiency of floating plants varied from 9 to 12%, while submerged species varied from 31 to 44%. As such, submerged macrophyte species demonstrated the most efficient removal of erythromycin from contaminated waters, and are therefore more indicated for antibiotic phytoremediation projects.

Veterinary antibiotics and plant physiology: An overview

Antibiotics are considered one of the greatest advances of medicine and, in addition to their use in treating a wide spectrum of illnesses, they have been widely employed to promote animal growth. As many of those pharmaceuticals are only partially absorbed by the digestive system, a considerable fraction is excreted in its original active form or only partially metabolized. Therefore, the use of animal excrement in agriculture represents one of the principal routes of insertion of antibiotics into the environment. Within that context, plants, principally those of agricultural interest, will be exposed to those compounds when present in the soil or when irrigated with contaminated water. Although not yet fully understood, there are reports of phytotoxic effects of antibiotics that can diminish agricultural production. This review is designed to provide a general and integrative overview of physiological alterations observed in plants caused by environmental exposures to veterinary-use antibiotics. This text principally focuses on the processes involved in antibody absorption and accumulation, and their effects on the primary (photosynthesis, respiration, nitrogen assimilation) and oxidative metabolisms of plants. We also bring attention to germinative and plant establishment processes under conditions of antibiotic contamination. The different effects of different antibiotics on plant physiology are listed here to provide a better understanding of their phytotoxicities.

Removal of Emerging Pollutants from Water Using Environmentally Friendly Processes: Photocatalysts Preparation, Characterization, Intermediates Identification and Toxicity Assessment

Pharmaceuticals and pesticides are emerging contaminants problematic in the aquatic environment because of their adverse effects on aquatic life and humans. In order to remove them from water, photocatalysis is one of the most modern technologies to be used. First, newly synthesized photocatalysts were successfully prepared using a sol-gel method and characterized by different techniques (XRD, FTIR, UV/Vis, BET and SEM/EDX). The photocatalytic properties of TiO₂, ZnO and MgO nanoparticles were examined according to their removal from water for two antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone) and two herbicides (tembotrione and fluroxypyr) exposed to UV/simulated sunlight (SS). TiO₂ proved to be the most efficient nanopowder under UV and SS. Addition of (NH₄)₂S₂O₈ led to the faster removal of both antibiotics and herbicide fluroxypyr. The main intermediates were separated and identified for the herbicides and antibiotic ciprofloxacin. Finally, the toxicity of each emerging pollutant mixture and formed intermediates was assessed on wheat germination and biomass production.

Aquatic Macrophytes in Constructed Wetlands: A Fight against Water Pollution

There is growing concern among health institutions worldwide to supply clean water to their populations, especially to more vulnerable communities. Although sewage treatment systems can remove most contaminants, they are not efficient at removing certain substances that can be detected in significant quantities even after standard treatments. Considering the necessity of perfecting techniques that can remove waterborne contaminants, constructed wetland systems have emerged as an effective bioremediation solution for degrading and removing contaminants. In spite of their environmentally friendly appearance and efficiency in treating residual waters, one of the limiting factors to structure efficient artificial wetlands is the choice of plant species that can both tolerate and remove contaminants. For sometimes, the chosen plants composing a system were not shown to increase wetland performance and became a problem since the biomass produced must have appropriated destination. We provide here an overview of the use and role of aquatic macrophytes in constructed wetland systems. The ability of plants to remove metals, pharmaceutical products, pesticides, cyanotoxins and nanoparticles in constructed wetlands were compared with the removal efficiency of non-planted systems, aiming to evaluate the capacity of plants to increase the removal efficiency of the systems. Moreover, this review also focuses on the management and destination of the biomass produced through natural processes of water filtration. The use of macrophytes in constructed wetlands represents a promising technology, mainly due to their efficiency of removal and the cost advantages of their implantation. However, the choice of plant species composing constructed wetlands should not be only based on the plant removal capacity since the introduction of invasive species can become an ecological problem.

Individual and combined effects of amoxicillin, enrofloxacin, and oxytetracycline on Lemna minor physiology

We investigated individual and combined effects of environmentally representative concentrations of amoxicillin (AMX; 2 μg l^-1), enrofloxacin (ENR; 2 μg l^-1), and oxytetracycline (OXY; 1 μg l^-1) on the aquatic macrophyte Lemna minor. While the concentrations of AMX and ENR tested were not toxic, OXY decreased plant growth and cell division. OXY induced hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) accumulation and related oxidative stress through its interference with the activities of mitochondria electron transport chain enzymes, although those deleterious effects could be ameliorated by the presence of AMX and/or ENR, which prevented the overaccumulation of ROS by increasing catalase enzyme activity. L. minor plants accumulated significant quantities of AMX, ENR and OXY from the media, although competitive uptakes were observed when plants were submitted to binary or tertiary mixtures of those antibiotics. Our results therefore indicate L. minor as a candidate for phytoremediation of service waters contaminated by AMX, ENR, and/or OXY.

Emerging contaminants in water used for maize irrigation: Economic and food safety losses associated with ciprofloxacin and glyphosate

Chemicals used to assure agricultural production and the feasibility of planting sites often end up in bodies of water used for crop irrigation. In a pot study, we investigated the consequences associated with the irrigation of maize with water contaminated by ciprofloxacin (Cipro; 0, 0.2, 0.8, 1.4 and 2.0 μg l-1) and/or glyphosate (0, 5, 25 and 50 mg l-1) on yields and food safety. Glyphosate in concentrations ≥25 mg l-1 prevented plant establishment, regardless of Cipro presence. Evaluations made at the V5 stage of plants reveal that Cipro concentrations ≥0.8 μg l-1 and glyphosate decreased photosynthesis and induced changes in leaf anatomy and stem biophysical properties that may contribute to decreased kernel yields. When those chemicals were applied together, kernel yield reductions were accentuated, evidencing their interactive effects. Irrigation with contaminated water resulted in accumulations of Cipro and glyphosate (as well as its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid) in plant tissues. Accumulation of these chemicals in plant tissues such as leaves and kernels is a problem, since they are used to feed animals and humans. Moreover, these chemicals are of potential toxicological concern, principally due to residue accumulations in the food chain. Specially, the antibiotic residue accumulations in maize tissues can assist the induction of antibiotic resistance in dangerous bacteria. Therefore, we point out the urgency of monitoring the quality of water used for crop irrigation to avoid economic and food-quality losses.

Revealing the active period and type of tetracycline stress on Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L.) during seed germination and post-germination

Stresses of antibiotics can cause strains (i.e. effects) on seed at germination and post-germination stages. But there is a lack of research on the period and type of the effects at present. In this study, Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L.), a commonly used crop, was selected to investigate the effect of tetracycline (TC), a major-use antibiotic, on its seed during different periods of the stages. Results showed that there were no significant differences among the germination energy (GE) of control (CK) and treatments, but radicle length (RL) of the treatments, the exposure to TC at post-germination stage (i.e. radicle elongation stage), was all significantly less than that of CK. The initial stage of radicle elongation was the earliest and most sensitive period at which the stress of TC caused the plastic effect on seed. Moreover, the action of TC stress on seed did not have a delayed characteristic. The result of RL was identical to the leakage of intracellular substances at radicle fast elongation stage, but not the Evan's blue trapped by radicle. We concluded that TC inhibited the elongation of radicle through weakening the cellular metabolic activity rather than leading to the loss of cellular membrane integrity. It should be paid more attention to the phytotoxicity of TC in the field due to its active characteristics revealed in our study.

Glyphosate residues in soil affect crop plant germination and growth

Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are the most widely used pesticides globally. Their persistence in soils and effects on non-target organisms have become a concern in agricultural and natural ecosystems. We experimentally studied, whether residues of GBH (Roundup Gold) or pure glyphosate in soils affect the germination or sprouting and growth of crop plants after the safety period. The seed germination of faba bean, oat and turnip rape, and sprouting of potato tubers was delayed in the greenhouse experiments in soils treated with GBH or with pure glyphosate. The total shoot biomass of faba bean was 28%, oat 29% and turnip rape 58% higher in control compared to GBH soils four weeks after sowing. In the beginning of the growing season, the plant growth in the field experiment supported the observations in the greenhouse experiment. However, at the end of the field experiment, potato shoot biomass was 25% and tuber biomass 14% greater in GBH soil compared to control soil. Potato tubers tended to gather low amounts of glyphosate (0.02 mg/kg) and its metabolite AMPA (0.07 mg/kg). Grazing by barnacle geese was three times higher in oats growing in the GBH soils compared to control oats in the field. Our results draw attention to complex indirect effects of GBH on crop plant seedling establishment and resistance to herbivores.

Ecotoxicological effects and accumulation of ciprofloxacin in Eichhornia crassipes under hydroponic conditions

Antibiotic residues pose a threat to the health of aquatic organisms. The effects and accumulation of antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) in a floating macrophyte (Eichhornia crassipes) under hydroponic conditions were investigated. It was found that E. crassipes exposure to CIP (< 1000 μg L^-1) could maintain a stable photosynthesis efficiency. In response to CIP stress, catalase and peroxidase activities of leaves were 7.24-37.51 nmol min^-1 g^-1 and 98.46-173.16 U g^-1, respectively. The presence of CIP did not inhibit the growth of the plant. After 14 days of exposure, tender leaves became white and withered, ascribed to the decline of chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters. The CIP concentrations, absorbed by E. crassipes, were highest in the roots, followed by white aerial parts and green aerial parts at CIP concentrations of 100 and 1000 μg L^-1. These findings demonstrated that E. crassipes could absorb and tolerate CIP in a limited time-scale and imply an alternative solution for phytoremediation in water bodies contaminated with antibiotics.

Does integrative effects of glyphosate, gibberellin and hydrogen peroxide ameliorate the deleterious effects of the herbicide on sorghum seed through its germination?

We investigated the interconnected roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated upon seed exposure to glyphosate and/or gibberellic acid (GA3), and the possible interaction between the herbicide and the plant hormone during germination of sorghum seeds. GA3 decreased antioxidant enzyme activity in embryos, and the over accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in 1000 mM GA3-treated seeds resulted in the lowest germinability among treatments. The deleterious effects of glyphosate on germination rate, in contrast, were not related to H2O2 accumulation, but to its interference with the mitochondrial electron transport chain. However, interactions among glyphosate, GA3 and H2O2 during seed germination were observed. Similar to paclobutrazol, glyphosate appears to interfere with the de novo synthesis of gibberellin, which modulates seed germination through oxidative metabolism. Seeds experiencing increased oxidative status due to GA3 (100 mM) or H2O2 (50 mM) applications had the effects of glyphosate on germination rate reversed. Since decreased ATP synthesis is a secondary effect of glyphosate, increased H2O2 concentrations in embryos must facilitate germination by decreasing the energy required by ATP-demanding metabolism. Our results showed that glyphosate affect seed germination of sorghum, and that the herbicide interacts with oxidative and gibberellin metabolisms.
