Nutrient conversion and recovery from wastewater using electroactive bacteria

Microbial nutrient recovery cell as an efficient and sustainable nutrient recovery option in sewage treatment

Globally, nutrient pollution is a serious and challenging concern. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are designed to prevent the discharge of contaminants resulting from anthropogenic sources to the receiving water bodies. In this study, seasonal nutrient pollution load, and biological nutrient removal efficiency of an anoxic aerobic unit based WWTP were investigated. Seasonal assessment revealed that the average total nitrogen removal efficiency and total phosphorus removal efficiency of the WWTP do not meet the discharge standard of 10 mg/L and 1 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, the WWTP does not utilize the energy contained in the wastewater. In this regard, dual chamber MFC (D-MFC) has emerged as a promising solution that can not only treat wastewater but can also convert chemical energy present in the wastewater into electrical energy. However, higher N O3- (57 ± 4 mg/L) and P-P O43- (6 ± 0.52 mg/L) concentration in cathodic effluent is a major drawback in D-MFC. Therefore, to solve this issue, D-MFC was transformed into a microbial nutrient recovery cell (MNRC) which demonstrated a final N H4+-N and P-P O43- concentration of nearly 1 mg/L with N H4+-N and P-P O43- recovery up to 74 % and 69 %, respectively in the recovery chamber. Besides, MNRC attained a maximum power density of 307 mW/m3 and a current density of 1614 mA/m3, thus indicating MNRC is an eco-friendly, energy-neutral, and promising technology for electricity generation and recovering nutrients.

Review of cathodic electroactive bacteria: Species, properties, applications and electron transfer mechanisms

Cathodic electroactive bacteria (C-EAB) which are capable of accepting electrons from solid electrodes provide fresh avenues for pollutant removal, biosensor design, and electrosynthesis. This review systematically summarized the burgeoning applications of the C-EAB over the past decade, including 1) removal of nitrate, aromatic derivatives, and metal ions; 2) biosensing based on biocathode; 3) electrosynthesis of CH4, H2, organic carbon, NH3, and protein. In addition, the mechanisms of electron transfer by the C-EAB are also classified and summarized. Extracellular electron transfer and interspecies electron transfer have been introduced, and the electron transport mechanism of typical C-EAB, such as Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, has been combed in detail. By bringing to light this cutting-edge area of the C-EAB, this review aims to stimulate more interest and research on not only exploring great potential applications of these electron-accepting bacteria, but also developing steady and scalable processes harnessing biocathodes.

Exploring advanced phycoremediation strategies for resource recovery from secondary wastewater using a large scale photobioreactor

This study aimed to investigate the operation of a 1000L microalgae-based membrane photobioreactor system in a greenhouse for continuous secondary wastewater treatment using Desmodesmus sp., a green microalgae strain originally isolated from a German sewage plant. The research spanned both summer and winter seasons, seeking to comprehend key trends and optimization strategies. Maintaining low cell concentrations in the photobioreactor during periods of light inhibition proved advantageous for nutrient uptake rates. Effective strategies for enhancing algae-based wastewater treatment included cell mass recycling, particularly during periods of high light availability. In comparison to conventional continuous cultivation methods, employing cell recycling and high dilution rates during times of abundant light, alongside using low cell concentrations and dilution rates during light inhibition, resulted in an 80 % and 10 % increase in overall biomass productivity during summer and winter, respectively. Furthermore, nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) removal rates exhibited a 23 % improvement during winter, while remaining unchanged in summer.

Comparison study on enhancement of phosphorus recovery from low-strength wastewater treated with different magnesium-based electrochemical constructed wetland

Phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewaters treated with constructed wetlands (CWs) could alleviate the current global P crisis but has not received sufficient attention. In this study, P transformation in different magnesium-based electrochemical CWs, including micro-electrolysis CW (M-CW), primary battery CW (P-CW), and electrolysis CW (E-CW), was thoroughly examined. The results revealed that the P removal efficiency was 53.0%, 75.8%, and 61.9% in the M-CW, E-CW, and P-CW, respectively. P mass balance analysis showed that P electrode deposition was the main reason for the higher P removal in the E-CW and P-CW. Significant differences were found between the E-CW and P-CW, P was distributed primarily on the magnesium plate in the P-CW but was distributed on the carbon plate in the E-CW. The E-CW had excellent P recovery capacity, and struvite was the major P recovery product. More intense magnesium plate corrosion and alkaline environment increased struvite precipitation in the E-CW, with the proportion of 61.6%. The results of functional microbial community analysis revealed that the abundance of electroactive bacteria was positively correlated with the deposition of struvite. This study provided an essential reference for the targeted electrochemical regulation of electric field processes and microorganisms in CWs to enhance P recovery.

Study of the key biotic and abiotic parameters influencing ammonium removal from wastewaters by Fe3+-mediated anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox)

The release of ammonia (as NH4+) into water bodies causes serious environmental problems. Therefore, the removal of ammonia from wastewater effluents has become a worldwide concern. New autotrophic biological alternatives for ammonia removal could reduce the limitations of conventional organic carbon-dependent nitrification-denitrification methods. Here, the potential of anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe3+ reduction (a process known as Feammox) is studied in wastewater treatment plants of the yeast and beer production industry, not related to ammonium or iron treatment. This process is presented as a viable option to improve the efficiency of ammonia removal from wastewater. The results of this study show that enrichments under Feammox conditions achieved removals of 28.19-32.25% of the total NH4+. The highest rates of ammonium removal and Fe3+ reduction were achieved using FeCl3 as iron source and pH = 7.0. Different environmental conditions for the enrichments were studied and it was found that the use of sodium acetate as a carbon source and an incubation temperature of 35 °C presented higher rates of iron reduction and higher increase in nitrate concentration, related to ammonium oxidative processes. Likewise, the presence of relevant species of the iron and nitrogen cycles as Ferrovum myxofaciens, Geobacter spp, Shewanella spp, Albidiferax ferrireducens and Anammox was verified, supporting the findings of this study. These results provide information that may be relevant to the potential applicability of Feammox to treat wastewater with high ammonia load and could help develop cost-effective and environmentally friendly methods for ammonium removal in wastewater treatment plants.

Examining current trends and future outlook of bio-electrochemical systems (BES) for nutrient conversion and recovery: an overview

Nutrient-rich waste streams from domestic and industrial sources and the increasing application of synthetic fertilizers have resulted in a huge-scale influx of reactive nitrogen and phosphorus in the environment. The higher concentrations of these pollutants induce eutrophication and foster degradation of aquatic biodiversity. Besides, phosphorus being non-renewable resource is under the risk of rapid depletion. Hence, recovery and reuse of the phosphorus and nitrogen are necessary. Over the years, nutrient recovery, low-carbon energy, and sustainable bioremediation of wastewater have received significant interest. The conventional wastewater treatment technologies have higher energy demand and nutrient removal entails a major cost in the treatment process. For these issues, bio-electrochemical system (BES) has been considered as sustainable and environment friendly wastewater treatment technologies that utilize the energy contained in the wastewater so as to recovery nutrients and purify wastewater. Therefore, this article comprehensively focuses and critically analyzes the potential sources of nutrients, working mechanism of BES, and different nutrient recovery strategies to unlock the upscaling opportunities. Also, economic analysis was done to understand the technical feasibility and potential market value of recovered nutrients. Hence, this review article will be useful in establishing waste management policies and framework along with development of advanced configurations with major emphasis on nutrient recovery rather than removal from the waste stream.

Deciphering three-dimensional bioanode configuration for augmenting power generation and nitrogen removal in air-cathode microbial fuel cells

In this study, the engineering-oriented three-dimensional (3D) bioanode concept was applied, demonstrating that spiral-stairs-like/rolled carbon felt (SCF/RCF) configurations achieved good performances in air-cathode microbial fuel cells (ACMFCs). With the 3D anodes, ACMFCs generated significantly higher power densities of 1535 mW/m3 (SCF) and 1800 mW/m3 (RCF), compared with that of a traditional flat carbon felt anode (FCF, 315 mW/m3). The coulombic efficiency of 15.39 % at SCF anode and 14.34 % at RCF anode also is higher than the 7.93 % at FCF anode. The 3D anode ACMFCs exhibited favorable removal of chemical oxygen demand (96 % of SCF and RCF) and total nitrogen (97 % of SCF, 99 % of RCF). Further results show that three-dimensional anode structures could enrich more electrode surface biomass and diversify the biofilm microbial communities for promoting bioelectroactivity, denitrification, and nitrification. These results demonstrate that three-dimensional anodes with active biofilm is a promising strategy for creating scalable MFCs-based wastewater treatment system.

Sustained-release nitrate combined with microbial fuel cell: A novel strategy for PAHs and odor removal from sediment

Nitrate addition is a biostimulation technique that can improve both the oxidation of acid volatile sulfide (AVS) through autotrophic denitrification and the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via heterotrophic denitrification. However, during the remediation, parts of the dissolved nitrate in the sediment migrates from the sediment to the overlying water, leading to the loss of effective electron acceptor. To overcome this limitation, a combined approached was proposed, which involved nitrocellulose addition and a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Results indicated the nitrate could be slowly released and maintained at a higher concentration over long term. In the combined system, the removal efficiencies of PAHs and AVS were 71.56% and 89.76%, respectively. Furthermore, the voltage attained for the MFC-nitrocellulose treatment was maintained at 146.1 mV on Day 70, which was 5.37 times higher than that of the MFC-calcium nitrate treatment. Sediments with nitrocellulose resulted in lower levels of nitrate and ammonium in the overlying water. Metagenomic results revealed that the combined technology improved the expression of nitrogen-cycling genes. The introduction of MFC inhibited sulfide regeneration during incubation by suppressing the enzyme activity like EC4.4.1.2. The enhanced biostimulation provided potential for in-situ bioremediation utilizing MFC coupled with slow-released nitrate (i.e., nitrocellulose) treatment.

Phosphorus biorecovery from wastewater contaminated with multiple nitrogen species by a bacterial consortium

Recovering finite and non-substitutable phosphorus from liquid waste streams through bio-mediated techniques has attracted increasing interest, but current approaches are incredibly dependent on ammonium. Herein, a process to recover phosphorus from wastewater under multiple nitrogen species conditions was developed. This study compared the effects of nitrogen species on the recovery of phosphorus resources by a bacterial consortium. It found that the consortium could not only efficiently utilize ammonium to enable phosphorus recovery but also utilize nitrate via dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) to recover phosphorus. The characteristics of the generated phosphorus-bearing minerals, including magnesium phosphate and struvite, were evaluated. Furthermore, nitrogen loading positively influenced the stability of the bacterial community structure. The genus Acinetobacter was dominant under nitrate and ammonium conditions, with a relatively stable abundance of 89.01% and 88.54%, respectively. The finding may provide new insights into nutrient biorecovery from phosphorus-containing wastewater contaminated with multiple nitrogen species.

Limited dissolved oxygen facilitated nitrogen removal at biocathode during the hydrogenotrophic denitrification process using bioelectrochemical system

Effects of limited dissolved oxygen (DO) on hydrogenotrophic denitrification at biocathode was investigated using bioelectrochemical system. It was found that total nitrogen removal increased by 5.9%, as DO reached about 0.24 mg/L with the cathodic chamber unplugged (group R_Exposure). With the presence of limited DO, not only the nitrogen metabolic pathway was influenced, but the composition of microbial communities of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria were enriched accordingly. After metagenomic analysis, enriched genes in R_Exposure were found to be associated with nearly each of nitrogen removal steps as denitrification, nitrification, DNRA, nitrate assimilation and even nitrogen fixation. Moreover, genes encoding both Complexes III and IV constituted the electron transfer chain were significantly enriched, indicating that more electrons would be orientated to the reduction of NO₂^--N, NO-N and oxygen. Therefore, enhanced nitrogen removal could be attained through the co-respiration of nitrate and oxygen by means of NH₄⁺-N oxidation.

Recent Advances in Bioelectrochemical Systems for Nitrogen and Phosphorus Recovery Using Membranes

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have emerged as a technology that is able to recover resources from different kinds of substrates, especially wastewater. Nutrient recovery, mostly based on membrane reactor configuration, is a clear niche for BES application. The recovery of nitrogen or phosphorus allows for treatment of wastewater while simultaneously collecting a concentrated stream with nutrients that can be reintroduced into the system, becoming a circular economy solution. The aim of this study is to review recent advances in membrane-based BESs for nitrogen and phosphorus recovery and compare the recovery efficiencies and energy requirements of each system. Finally, there is a discussion of the main issues that arise from using membrane-based BESs. The results presented in this review show that it would be beneficial to intensify research on BESs to improve recovery efficiencies at the lowest construction cost in order to take the final step towards scaling up and commercialising this technology.

New insight and enhancement mechanisms for Feammox process by electron shuttles in wastewater treatment - A systematic review

Ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) is a newly discovered iron-nitrogen cycle process of microbial catalyzed NH₄⁺ oxidation coupled with iron reduction. Fe(III) often exists in the form of insoluble iron minerals resulting in reduced microbial availability and low efficiency of Feammox. Electron shuttles(ESs) can be reversibly oxidized and reduced which has the potential to improve Feammox efficiency. This review summarizes the discovery process, electron transfer mechanism, influencing factors and driven microorganisms of Feammox, ang expounds the possibility and potential mechanism of ESs to enhance Feammox efficiency. Based on an in-depth analysis of the current research situation of Feammox for nitrogen removal, the knowledge gaps and future research directions including how to apply ESs enhanced Feammox to promote nitrogen removal in practical wastewater treatment have been highlighted. This review can provide new ideas for the engineering application research of Feammox and strong theoretical support for its development.

Nutrient removal and recovery from wastewater by microbial fuel cell-based systems - A review

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a green innovative technology that can be employed for nutrient removal/recovery as well as for energy production from wastewater. This paper summarizes the recent advances in the use of MFCs for nutrient removal/recovery. Different configurations of MFCs used for nutrient removal are first described. Different types of nutrient removal/recovery mechanisms such as precipitation, biological uptake by microalgae, nitrification, denitrification and ammonia stripping occurring in MFCs are discussed. Recovery of nutrients as struvite or cattiite by precipitation, as microalgal biomass and as ammonium salts are common. This review shows that while higher nutrient removal/recovery is possible with MFCs and their modifications compared to other techniques as indicated by many laboratory studies, field-scale studies and optimization of operational parameters are needed to develop efficient MFCs for nutrient removal and recovery and electricity generation from different types of wastewaters.

Role of organic/sulfide ratios on competition of DNRA and denitrification in a co-driven sequencing biofilm batch reactor

Denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) are two competing pathways in nitrate-reducing process. In this study, a series of C/S ratios from 8:1 to 2:4 were investigated in a sequencing biofilm batch reactor (SBBR) to determine the role of reducers (sulfide and acetate) on their competition. The results showed that the proportion of DNRA increased in high electron system, either in organic-rich system or in sulfide-rich system. The highest DNRA ratio increased to 16.4% at the C/S ratio of 2:3. Excess electron donors, particularly sulfide, were favorable for DNRA in a limited nitrate environment. Moreover, a higher reductive environment could facilitate DNRA, especially, when ORP was lower than - 400 mV in this system. 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis demonstrated that Geobacter might be the important participant involved in DNRA process in organic-rich system, while Desulfomicrobium might be the dominant DNRA bacteria in sulfide-rich system. DNRA cultivation could enrich nitrogen conversion pathways in conventional denitrification systems and deepen the insight into nitrogen removal at low C/N.

Electrochemically mediated precipitation of phosphate minerals for phosphorus removal and recovery: Progress and perspective

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element for the growth and reproduction of organisms. Unfortunately, the natural P cycle has been broken by the overexploitation of P ores and the associated discharge of P into water bodies, which may trigger the eutrophication of water bodies in the short term and possible P shortage soon. Consequently, technologies emerged to recover P from wastewater to mitigate pollution and exploit secondary P resources. Electrochemically induced phosphate precipitation has the merit of achieving P recovery without dosing additional chemicals via creating a localized high pH environment near the cathode. We critically reviewed the development of electrochemically induced precipitation systems toward P removal and recovery over the past ten years. We summarized and discussed the effects of pH, current density, electrode configuration, and water matrix on the performance of electrochemical systems. Next to ortho P, we identified the potential and illustrated the mechanism of electrochemical P removal and recovery from non-ortho P compounds by combined anodic or anode-mediated oxidation and cathodic reduction (precipitation). Furthermore, we assessed the economic feasibility of electrochemical methods and concluded that they are more suitable for treating acidic P-rich waste streams. Despite promising potentials and significant progress in recent years, the application of electrochemical systems toward P recovery at a larger scale requires further research and development. Future work should focus on evaluating the system's performance under long-term operation, developing an automatic process for harvesting P deposits, and performing a detailed economic and life-cycle assessment.

Insight of bacteria and archaea in Feammox community enriched from different soils

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe(III) reduction, known as Feammox, is a newly discovered nitrogen-cycling process, which serves an important role in the pathways of nitrogen loss in the environment. However, the specific types of microorganisms involved in Feammox currently remain unclear. In this study, we selected two groups of soil samples (paddy and mine), from considerably different habitats in South China, to acclimate Feammox colonies. The Paddy Group had a shorter lag period than the Mine Group, while the ammonium transformation rate was nearly equal in both groups in the mature period. The emergence of the Feammox activity was found to be associated with the increased abundance of iron-reducing bacteria, especially Clostridium_sensu_stricto_12, Desulfitobacterium, Thermoanaerobaculum, Anaeromyxobacter and Geobacter. Ammonium oxidizing archaea and methanogens were dominant among the known archaea. These findings extend our knowledge of the microbial community composition of the potential Feammox microbes from soils under different environmental conditions, which broadens our understanding of this important Fe/N transformation process.

Ammonium and Phosphate Recovery in a Three Chambered Microbial Electrolysis Cell: Towards Obtaining Struvite from Livestock Manure

Ammonia and phosphate, which are present in large quantities in waste streams such as livestock manure, are key compounds in fertilization activities. Their recovery will help close natural cycles and take a step forward in the framework of a circular economy. In this work, a lab-scale three-chambered microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) has been operated in continuous mode for the recovery of ammonia and phosphate from digested pig slurry in order to obtain a nutrient concentrated solution as a potential source of fertilizer (struvite). The maximum average removal efficiencies for ammonium and phosphate were 20% ± 4% and 36% ± 10%, respectively. The pH of the recovered solution was below 7, avoiding salt precipitation in the reactor. According to Visual MINTEQ software modelling, an increase of pH value to 8 outside the reactor would be enough to recover most of the potential struvite (0.21 mmol L−1 d−1), while the addition of up to 0.2 mM of magnesium to the nutrient recovered solution would enhance struvite production from 5.6 to 17.7 mM. The application of three-chambered MECs to the recovery of nutrients from high strength wastewater is a promising technology to avoid ammonia production through industrial processes or phosphate mineral extraction and close nutrient natural cycles.

A promising destiny for Feammox: From biogeochemical ammonium oxidation to wastewater treatment

Ammonium is one of the most common forms of nitrogen that exists in wastewater, and it can cause severe pollution when it is discharged without treatment. New technologies must be developed to effectively remove ammonium because conventional nitrification-denitrification methods are limited by the lack of organic carbon. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to Fe(III) reduction is known as Feammox, and is a recently discovered nitrogen cycling process. Feammox can proceed under autotrophic or anaerobic conditions and effectively transforms ammonium to stable, innocuous dinitrogen gas, using the ferric iron as an electron acceptor. This method is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and conducive to joint application with other nitrogen removal reactions in low-C/N municipal wastewater treatments. This review provides a comprehensive survey of Feammox mechanistic investigations and presents studies regarding the functional microorganism colonies. The potential for Feammox to be applied for the removal of nitrogen from various polluted water sources and the combination of the Feammox process with other frontier environmental technologies are also discussed. In addition, future perspectives for removing ammonium using Feammox are presented.

Advanced near-zero waste treatment of food processing wastewater with water, carbon, and nutrient recovery

A near-zero waste treatment system for food processing wastewater was developed and studied. The wastewater was treated using an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR), polished using an outdoor photobioreactor for microalgae cultivation (three species were studied), and excess sludge was treated using hydrothermal carbonization. The study was conducted under arid climate conditions for one year (four seasons). The AnMBR reduced the total organic carbon by 97%, which was mostly recovered as methane (~57%) and hydrochar (~4%). Microalgal biomass productivity in the AnMBR effluent ranged from 0.25 to 0.8 g·L^-1·day^-1. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) uptake varied seasonally, from 18 to 45 mg·L^-1·day^-1 and up to 5 mg·L^-1·day^-1, respectively. N and P mass balance analysis demonstrated that the process was highly efficient in the recovery of nitrogen (~77%), and phosphorus (~91%). The performance of the microalgal culture changed among seasons because of climatic variation, as a result of variation in the wastewater chemistry, and possibly due to differences among the microalgal species. Effluent standards for irrigation use were met throughout the year and were achieved within two days in summer and 4.5 days in winter. Overall, the study demonstrated a near-zero waste discharge system capable of producing high-quality effluent, achieving nutrient and carbon recovery into microalgae biomass, and energy production as biogas and hydrochar.

Critical insights into psychrophilic anaerobic digestion: Novel strategies for improving biogas production

Anaerobic digestion (AD) under psychrophilic temperature has only recently garnered deserved attention. In major parts of Europe, USA, Canada and Australia, climatic conditions are more suited for psychrophilic (<20 ℃) rather than mesophilic (35 - 37 ℃) and thermophilic (55 - 60 ℃) AD. Low temperature has adverse effects on important cellular processes which may render the cell biology inactive. Moreover, cold climate can also alter the physical and chemical properties of wastewater, thereby reducing the availability of substrate to microbes. Hence, the use of low temperature acclimated microbial biomass could overcome thermodynamic constraints and carry out flexible structural and conformational changes to proteins, membrane lipid composition, expression of cold-adapted enzymes through genotypic and phenotypic variations. Reduction in organic loading rate is beneficial to methane production under low temperatures. Moreover, modification in the design of existing reactors and the use of hybrid reactors have already demonstrated improved methane generation in the lab-scale. This review also discusses some novel strategies such as direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), co-digestion of substrate, bioaugmentation, and bioelectrochemical system assisted AD which present promising prospects. While DIET can facilitate syntrophic electron exchange in diverse microbes, the addition of organic-rich co-substrate can help in maintaining suitable C/N ratio in the anaerobic digester which subsequently can enhance methane generation. Bioaugmentation with psychrophilic strains could reduce start-up time and ensure daily stable performance for wastewater treatment facilities at low temperatures. In addition to the technical discussion, the economic assessment and future outlook on psychrophilic AD are also highlighted.

A highly sensitive bioelectrochemical toxicity sensor and its evaluation using immediate current attenuation

Electroactive biofilm (EAB) sensor had shown great potential in the field of early warning of toxicants in water because of the low-cost and broad-spectrum. However, the traditional calculation of sensitivity strongly relied on the time and concentration gradient which weakened time-efficiency of the sensor. Moreover, the sensitivity could be further improved to respond trace concentrations. Here EAB sensors with different substrate concentrations were formed to respond different concentrations formaldehyde ranging from 1 ppm to 50 ppm and immediate current attenuation (ICA) was induced to evaluate the sensitivity. The ICA (~70 s) exhibited a shorter time than that calculated by calculable sensitivity (CS) and current attenuation (CA), which not only achieved the response of trace concentration but also improved the time-efficiency of the sensor. The EAB formed with 0.1 g/L acetate (EAB-0.1) had a 380% higher sensitivity than that formed with 1.0 g/L acetate (EAB-1.0), leading to a significant electrochemical toxicity response to 1 ppm of formaldehyde. The results of electrochemical response coefficient confirmed that EAB-0.1 was 1.5-6.3 times of that formed with acetate from 0.2 to 1.0 g/L, which was related with microbial community and component of EAB as described in our previous study. Our findings demonstrated that calculation of sensitivity could be optimized to reflect time-efficiency and EAB with limit acetate could be applied in trace toxicant detection.

Substrate salinity: A critical factor regulating the performance of microbial fuel cells, a review

Substrate salinity is a critical factor influencing microbial fuel cells (MFCs) performance and various studies have suggested that increasing substrate salinity first improves MFC performance. However, a further increase in salinity that exceeds the salinity tolerance of exoelectrogens shows negative effects because of inhibited bacterial activity and increased activation losses. In this review, electricity generation and contaminant removal from saline substrates using MFCs are summarized, and results show different optimal salinities for obtaining maximum performance. Then, electroactive bacteria capable of tolerating saline environments and strategies for improving salinity tolerance are discussed. In addition to ohmic resistance and bacterial activity, membrane resistance and catalyst performance will also be affected by substrate salinity, all of which jointly contribute the final overall MFC performance. Therefore, the combined effect of salinity is analyzed to illustrate how the MFC performance changes with increasing salinity. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of MFCs operated in saline environments are discussed.

Biosynthesis of vivianite from microbial extracellular electron transfer and environmental application

Vivianite (Fe₃(PO₄)₂·8H₂O) is a common hydrous ferrous phosphate mineral which often occurs in reductive conditions, especially anoxic non-sulfide environment containing high concentrations of ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) and orthophosphate (PO₄^3-). Vivianite is an important product of dissimilatory iron reduction and a promising route for phosphorus recovery from wastewater. Its formation is closely related to the extracellular electron transfer (EET), a key mechanism for microbial respiration and a crucial explanation for the reduction of metal oxides in soil and sediments. Despite of the natural ubiquity, easy accessibility and attractive economic value, the application value of vivianite has not received much attention. This review introduces the characteristics, occurrence and biosynthesis of vivianite from microbial EET, and systematically analyzes the application value of vivianite in the environmental field, including immobilization of heavy metals (HMs), dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT), sedimentary phosphorus sequestration and eutrophication alleviation. Additionally, its potential functions as a slow-release fertilizer are discussed as well. In general, vivianite is expected to make more contributions to the future scientific research, especially the solution of environmental problems. Overcoming the lack of understanding and some technical limitations will be beneficial to the further application of vivianite in environmental field.

New developments in biological phosphorus accessibility and recovery approaches from soil and waste streams

Phosphorus (P) is a non-renewable resource and is on the European Union's list of critical raw materials. It is predicted that the P consumption peak will occur in the next 10 to 20 years. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find accessible sources in the immediate environment, such as soil, and to use alternative resources of P such as waste streams. While enormous progress has been made in chemical P recovery technologies, most biological technologies for P recovery are still in the developmental stage and are not reaching industrial application. Nevertheless, biological P recovery could offer good solutions as these technologies can return P to the human P cycle in an environmentally friendly way. This mini-review provides an overview of the latest approaches to make P available in soil and to recover P from plant residues, animal and human waste streams by exploiting the universal trait of P accumulation and P turnover in microorganisms and plants.

Fenton-based technologies as efficient advanced oxidation processes for microcystin-LR degradation

In recent years, the safety and ecology threat of cyanobacterial burst has drawn wide concern, especially the release of toxic microcystin-LR (MC-LR). To break through the bottleneck of uncomplete MC-LR degradation by conventional physical-chemistry methods, Fenton-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) developed rapidly due to striking degradation efficiency through the potent hydroxyl radicals (HO·) oxidation. Herein, a comprehensive overview is presented on the recent achievements of the various Fenton-based technologies (including conventional Fenton, photo-Fenton, electro-Fenton, ozone-Fenton and sono-Fenton) for MC-LR degradation. In particular, the comparisons between various Fenton-based technologies about advantages and drawbacks are discussed. Based on analyzing the degradation intermediates and pathways, the destruction of Adda chain via hydroxylation was confirmed to be essential for detoxification of MC-LR. Roles of influencing factors such as MC-LR initial concentration, dosages of the catalyst and oxidant, environment alkalinity, natural organic matters (NOMs) as well as other inorganic ions are specifically summarized. This Review also gave special emphasis on technique optimization trends for Fenton application of MC-LR degradation, as well as key challenges and future opportunities in this fast developing field.

Research on enhancement of zero-valent iron on dissimilatory nitrate/nitrite reduction to ammonium of Desulfovibrio sp. CMX

The process of nitrate dissimilation to ammonium (DNRA) is an important way for storing nitrogen in nature and DNRA is a key step in efficient recovery of nitrogen in wastewater. However, in view of the low conversion efficiency of DNRA, zero-valent iron (ZVI) was used to enhance the DNRA process of Desulfovibrio sp. CMX. ZVI can obviously promote the nitrate/nitrite reduction. The experiment indicated that 5 g/L 300 mesh ZVI could convert 5 mmol/L nitrate or nitrite to ammonium in 48 h or 36 h respectively, and the conversion ratio of NO₂^- to NH₄⁺ could reach more than 90%. The ZVI provided a suitable growth environment for the Desulfovibrio sp. CMX through chemical reduction of nitrite, production of divalent iron (Fe²⁺), reduction of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and adjustment of pH, which strengthened the DNRA performance. This experiment is advantageous for increasing efficiency of DNRA and provides a new idea for efficient recovery of nitrogen resources.

Impacts of hydraulic retention time on a continuous flow mode dual-chamber microbial fuel cell for recovering nutrients from municipal wastewater

Nutrients recovery has become a meaningful solution to address shortage in the fertilizer production which is the key issue of nations' food security. The concept of municipal wastewater is based on its ability to be a major potential source for recovered nutrients because of its vast quantity and nutrient-rich base. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has emerged as a sustainable technology, which is able to recover nutrients and simultaneously generate electricity. In this study a two-chambered MFC was constructed, and operated in a continuous flow mode employing artificial municipal wastewater as a substrate. The effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the recovery of nutrients by MFC were studied. The COD removal rates were insignificantly influenced by varying HRT from 0.35 to 0.69 d, that were over 92%. Furthermore, the recovery rate of nutrients was insignificantly affected while increasing the HRT, which fluctuates from 80% to 90%. In contrast, the maximum power generation declined when HRT increased and the lowest one was 510.3 mV at the HRT of 0.35 d. These results demonstrate that the lab-scale double chamber MFC using municipal wastewater as the substrate can provide a highly effective removal strategy for organic matter, nutrients recovery and electricity output when operating at a specific HRT.

Electron Flow Shifts from Anode Respiration to Nitrate Reduction During Electroactive Biofilm Thickening

As electrons generated through substrate oxidation compete with electrodes, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), denitrification in bioelectrochemical systems in the presence of nitrate, and nitrate reduction through an electroactive biofilm (EAB) are unpredictable. We find that pathways of nitrate reduction are related to EAB thickness and that 76 ± 2 μm is the critical thickness of a biofilm at which both the inner and outer layers simultaneously include DNRA, leading to a maximum level of DNRA efficiency of 42%. Fractions of electrons flowing during nitrate reduction are relatively stable, but their distributions between DNRA and denitrification vary with biofilm thickness. Electrons prefer denitrification in an EAB that is 66 ± 2 μm, while DNRA reversely surpasses denitrification when the thickness increases in the range of 76 ± 2 to 210 ± 2 μm. Biofilm thickening enhances the DNRA of all biofilms close to solution, where nirK remains constant and nrfA is significantly upregulated. However, nrfA is downregulated in layers close to the electrode when the biofilm is thicker than 76 ± 2 μm. These findings reveal the spatially heterogeneous reduction of nitrate in thick EABs, highlighting the importance of biofilm thickness to the regulation of end products of nitrate reduction.

Acetate limitation selects Geobacter from mixed inoculum and reduces polysaccharide in electroactive biofilm

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are widely investigated as a promising technology to recover bioenergy or synthesize value-added products from wastewaters. The performance of BES depends on the activity of electroactive biofilm (EAB). As the core of BES, it is still unclear how the EAB is formed from mixed inoculum, and how exoelectrogens compete with non-exoelectrogens. Here we confirmed that microbial community composition and the morphology of EAB on the electrode including the thickness and porosity of the biofilm are critical for the performance of BES, and these properties can be simply controlled by the substrate concentration during EAB formation. The EAB formed with 0.1 g/L of acetate (EAB-0.1) exhibited a 90% higher current density than that formed with 1.0 g/L acetate (EAB-1.0). EAB-0.1 had a 50% higher electroactivity per biomass and a 20% thinner thickness than EAB-1.0, which was partly due to the 54% decrease of insulative polysaccharide in biofilm. Limited acetate also imposed a selective pressure to enrich Geobacter up to 88% compared to 72% when acetate was abundant. Our findings demonstrate that a highly active EAB can be formed by limiting substrate concentration, providing a broader understanding of the EAB formation process, the ecology of interspecies competitions and potential applications for bioenergy recovery and trace toxicant detection in the future.

Bioelectrochemical Ammoniation Coupled with Microbial Electrolysis for Nitrogen Recovery from Nitrate in Wastewater

Nitrate-N in wastewaters is hard to be recovered because it is difficult to volatilize with an opposite charge to ammonium. Here, we have proved the feasibility of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) by the easy-acclimated mixed electroactive bacteria, achieving the highest DNRA efficiency of 44%. It was then coupled with microbial electrolysis to concentrate ammonium by a factor of 4 in the catholyte for recovery. The abundance of electroactive bacteria in the biofilm before nitrate addition, especially Geobacter spp., was found to determine the DNRA efficiency. As the main competitors of DNRA bacteria, the growth of denitrifiers was more sensitive to C/N ratios. The DNRA microbial community contrarily showed a stable and recoverable ammoniation performance over C/N ratios ranging from 0.5 to 8.0. A strong competition of the electrode and nitrate on electron donors was observed at the early stage (15 d) of electroactive biofilm formation, which can be weakened when the biofilm was mature on 40 d. Quantitative PCR showed a significant increase in nirS and nrfA transcripts in the ammoniation process. nirS was inhibited significantly after nitrate depletion while nrfA was still upregulated. These findings provided a novel way to recover nitrate-N using organic wastes as both electron donor and power, which has broader implications on the sustainable wastewater treatment and the ecology of nitrogen cycling.
