Abstract
BACKGROUND The utilization of chemical fertilizers is a key measure for maintaining tea yield and quality, but excessive use has negative environmental impacts. The substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer has been promoted to sustain crop yield and soil quality. However, knowledge gaps regarding the effects of organic substitution on soil quality and tea yield in tea plantations still exist. RESULTS A field experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of organic substitution treatments (i.e. 25% partial substitution: biogas slurry + green manure + formula fertilizer, BFG; sheep manure + formula fertilizer, OFF; 100% complete substitution: sheep manure + green manure, OG) on the soil quality, tea yield and quality, and nitrogen utilization efficiency in southwestern China. Results showed that all organic substitution treatments slightly increased soil pH, and significantly increased soil organic matter by 13.22-14.88% compared to conventional fertilization (CF). The BFG treatment was the most effective in enhancing the soil quality index, showing increases of 16.80%, 8.37% and 24.87% higher than the CF, OFF and OG treatments, respectively. Tea yield significantly increased under the BFG, OFF and OG treatments by 11.97%, 13.58% and 5.90% compared to CF, respectively. The BFG treatment increased the amino acid content by 7.78% and decreased the tea polyphenol/amino acid ratio by 6.87%. Additionally, the BFG, OFF and OG treatments greatly increased the nitrogen utilization efficiency of young sprouts by 70.71%, 82.54% and 34.28%, respectively. CONCLUSION Overall, partial organic substitution could effectively improve soil quality while maintaining tea yield. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In this study, the performance of a novel organic tea compost developed for the first time in the world from raw tea waste from tea processing factories and enriched with worms, beneficial microorganisms, and enzymes was tested in comparison to chemical fertilizers in tea plantations in Rize and Artvin provinces, where the most intensive tea cultivation is carried out in Turkey. In the field trials, the developed organic tea vermicompost was incorporated into the root zones of the plants in the tea plantations in amounts of 1000 (OVT1), 2000 (OVT2) and 4000 (OVT4) (kg ha-1). The experimental design included a control group without OVT applications and positive controls with chemical fertilizers (N: P: K 25:5:10, (CF) 1200 kg ha-1) commonly used by local growers. The evaluation included field trials over two years. The average yields obtained in two-year field trials in five different areas were: Control (6326), OVT1 (7082), OVT2 (7408), OVT4 (7910), and CF (8028) kg ha-1. Notably, there was no significant statistical difference in yields between the organic (at 4000 kg ha-1 ) and chemical fertilizers (at 1200 kg ha-1). The highest nutrient contents were obtained when CF and OVT4 were applied. According to the average values across all regions, the application of OVT4 increased the uptake of 63% N, 18% K, 75% P, 21% Mg, 19% Na, 29% Ca, 28% Zn, 11% Cu and 24% Mn compared to the control group. The application of chemical fertilizers increased the uptake of 75% N, 21% K, 75% P, 21% Mg, 28% Na, 27% Ca, 30% Zn, 18% Cu and 31% Mn compared to the control group. The organic fertilizer treatment had the lowest levels of antioxidants compared to the control groups and the chemical fertilizers. It was also found that the organic fertilizer increased the levels of amino acids, organic acids and chlorophyll in the tea plant. Its low antioxidant activity and proline content prepared them for or protected them from stress conditions. With these properties, the biotechnologically developed organic tea compost fertilizer has proven to be very promising for tea cultivation and organic plant production.

Abstract
It is generally recognized that the quality differences in plant germplasm resources are genetically determined, and that only a good "pedigree" can have good quality. Ecological memory of plants and rhizosphere soil fungi provides a new perspective to understand this phenomenon. Here, we selected 45 tea tree germplasm resources and analyzed the rhizosphere soil fungi, nutrient content and tea quality. We found that the ecological memory of tea trees for soil fungi led to the recruitment and aggregation of dominant fungal populations that were similar across tea tree varieties, differing only in the number of fungi. We performed continuous simulation and validation to identify four characteristic fungal genera that determined the quality differences. Further analysis showed that the greater the recruitment and aggregation of Saitozyma and Archaeorhizomyces by tea trees, the greater the rejection of Chaetomium and Trechispora, the higher the available nutrient content in the soil and the better the tea quality. In summary, our study presents a new perspective, showing that ecological memory between tea trees and rhizosphere soil fungi leads to differences in plants' ability to recruit and aggregate characteristic fungi, which is one of the most important determinants of tea quality. The artificial inoculation of rhizosphere fungi may reconstruct the ecological memory of tea trees and substantially improve their quality.

Abstract
Agricultural water pollution is a significant challenge in China, a rapidly growing economy with a large agricultural sector. The grey water footprint (WF) is a tool for evaluating freshwater pollution. It expresses pollution in volumetric units identifying the pollutant that theoretically needs most water to be diluted to accepted water quality standards. Previous agricultural grey WF studies focused on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), some studies included pesticides. This study assesses grey WFs based on N, P and 1513 pesticide combinations for twelve main crops and two crop categories in 31 Chinese provinces. Grey WFs, including the pesticide component, are far larger than estimated before, dominating total agricultural WFs (green, blue, and grey). The total grey WF of Chinese agriculture (4,900 109 m3 year-1) is determined by pesticides, while grey WFs related to N and P are 450 and 1,500 109 m3 year-1, differences of a factor of eleven and three respectively. The provinces Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Henan, and Shandong are hotspots contributing 37 % to the total grey WF. A limited number of pesticides used for maize, vegetables, fruits and potato (Mancozeb a fungicide, Acetochlor a herbicide and Cypermethrin an insecticide) dominate total grey WFs, contributing 80 % to the total grey WF. Eliminating the most polluting pesticides per category and redistributing the remaining ones with a similar function but lower grey WFs reduces national water pollution from agriculture by 64 %. Only five crops, i.e. maize, potato, soybean, rice and wheat, and the two crop categories, vegetables and fruits, contribute 94 % to this reduction. Probably grey WFs could reduce even further with a second elimination and redistribution effort. This study is the first national grey WF assessment related to pesticides in agriculture. It offers valuable insights to farmers and policymakers to enhance water quality in China and beyond.

Abstract
There are obvious differences in quality between different varieties of the same plant, and it is not clear whether they can be effectively distinguished from each other from a bacterial point of view. In this study, 44 tea tree varieties (Camellia sinensis) were used to analyze the rhizosphere soil bacterial community using high-throughput sequencing technology, and five types of machine deep learning were used for modeling to obtain characteristic microorganisms that can effectively differentiate different varieties, and validation was performed. The relationship between characteristic microorganisms, soil nutrient transformation, and tea quality formation was further analyzed. It was found that 44 tea tree varieties were classified into two groups (group A and group B) and the characteristic bacteria that distinguished them came from 23 genera. Secondly, the content of rhizosphere soil available nutrients (available nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium) and tea quality indexes (tea polyphenols, theanine, and caffeine) was significantly higher in group A than in group B. The classification result based on both was consistent with the above bacteria. This study provides a new insight and research methodology into the main reasons for the formation of quality differences among different varieties of the same plant.

Abstract
Fertilization is an essential aspect of tea plantation management that supports a sustainable tea production and drastically influences soil microbial communities. However, few research studies have focused on the differences of microbial communities and the variation in tea quality in response to different fertilization treatments. In this work, the soil fertility, tea quality, and soil microbial communities were investigated in two domestic tea plantations following the application of chemical and organic fertilizers. We determined the content of mineral elements in the soil, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and found that the supplementation of chemical fertilizer directly increased the content of mineral elements. However, the application of organic fertilizer significantly improved the accumulation of tea polyphenols and reduced the content of caffeine. Furthermore, amplicon sequencing results showed that the different ways of applying fertilizer have limited effect on the alpha diversity of the microbial community in the soil while the beta diversity was remarkably influenced. This work also suggests that the bacterial community structure and abundance were also relatively constant while the fungal community structure and abundance were dramatically influenced; for example, Chaetomiaceae at the family level, Hypocreaceae at the order level, Trichoderma at the genus level, and Fusarium oxysporum at the species level were predominantly enriched in the tea plantation applying organic fertilizer. Moreover, the bacterial and fungal biomarkers were also analyzed and it was found that Proteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria (bacteria) and Tremellomycetes (fungi) were potentially characterized as biomarkers in the plantation under organic fertilization. These results provide a valuable basis for the application of organic fertilizer to improve the soil of tea plantations in the future.

Abstract
Proper nutrient management is crucially important to the sustainable development of tea production. Compared to normal green-leaf cultivars, albino tea cultivars produce green tea of superior quality characterized by high contents of amino acids as a result of the hydrolysis of chloroplast proteins at albinism. However, the advantage of albino tea cultivars was offset by inferior growth and yield performance because of low contents of chlorophylls and limited photosynthesis capacity. Our understanding about the nutrition characteristics of albino tea cultivars was very limited. A four-year field experiment was conducted to develop proper nutrient management for Baiye-1 to overcome its weakness of low productivity without a tradeoff in tea quality and environmental risks. The nutrient management schemes were formulated by optimizing the rate and ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus, potassium and magnesium together with substitution of chemical fertilizers with organic manures. The total amounts of nutrients in the optimized schemes were reduced by 25% compared to the local farmers' practice (FP). Results showed that optimized rates and ratio of nutrients together with partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with rapeseed cake manure more considerably improved albino tea yield, the contents of free amino acids, total polyphenol and catechins relative to FP. Partial substitution of chemical fertilizers with commercial livestock manure decreased tea quality, which was likely caused by a dilution effect of increasing tea yield and decreasing N status of tea plants. Full organic substitution of chemical fertilizers by rapeseed cake manure improved tea yield and quality but had relatively low agronomic efficiency and profit. The effect of optimized nutrient management schemes was associated with the improvement of nutritional status in tea plants. The present work demonstrated that the optimization of nutrient management considerably improved albino tea yield, quality and profit while decreased the application rate of fertilizers and the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract
Energy cane (Saccharum spp.) bagasse, a type of biomass waste, is often underutilized, burned, or left to dispose of itself. This research aimed to evaluate the potential of converting this bagasse into high-value cellulosic microfiber hydrogels (CMH) for water conservation and potted chili (Capsicum annuum) plant growth. CMH offers a biodegradable alternative to synthetic polyacrylamide (PA) hydrogels and provides the dual benefit of improved water use efficiency and reduced environmental impact due to their ability to naturally break down in the soil. In this study, CMH and PA hydrogels were compared for water retention value (WRV), and reswelling kinetics (RK), as well as their effects on plant height, leaf count, root-to-shoot ratios (R:S ratio), and soil moisture retention. Two versions of CMH, CMH65 and CMH60, were prepared with varying cellulose-chitosan ratios: 65:35 and 60:40, respectively. The hydrogels were tested at four concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% w/w) by being mixed in Promix® soil. Observations were recorded over a 16-day period without additional water. Also, the WRV of hydrogels at 240 min and RK (10-180 min) were compared over three swelling-deswelling cycles. The PA hydrogel exhibited higher WRV (exceeding 450%) compared to CMH (45%). However, PA led to reduced plant height, leaf count, and R:S ratio when compared to higher concentrations of CMH65 and CMH60. In general, CMH60 (0.5% and 2%) exhibited superior plant growth. All hydrogels exhibited a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in WRV across successive cycles. Notably, during cycle 2, both CMH65 and CMH60 peaked in WRV at 10 and 20 min, respectively, compared to cycle 1. This study demonstrates the potential of bagasse-derived hydrogels as a value-added product for water conservation and crop growth.

Abstract
Leaves of Camellia sinensis plants are used to produce tea, one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, containing a wide variety of bioactive compounds that help to promote human health. Tea cultivation is economically important, and its sustainable production can have significant consequences in providing agricultural opportunities and lowering extreme poverty. Soil parameters are well known to affect the quality of the resultant leaves and consequently, the understanding of the diversity and functions of soil microorganisms in tea gardens will provide insight to harnessing soil microbial communities to improve tea yield and quality. Current analyses indicate that tea garden soils possess a rich composition of diverse microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) of which the bacterial Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Firmicutes and Chloroflexi and fungal Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Glomeromycota are the prominent groups. When optimized, these microbes' function in keeping garden soil ecosystems balanced by acting on nutrient cycling processes, biofertilizers, biocontrol of pests and pathogens, and bioremediation of persistent organic chemicals. Here, we summarize research on the activities of (tea garden) soil microorganisms as biofertilizers, biological control agents and as bioremediators to improve soil health and consequently, tea yield and quality, focusing mainly on bacterial and fungal members. Recent advances in molecular techniques that characterize the diverse microorganisms in tea gardens are examined. In terms of viruses there is a paucity of information regarding any beneficial functions of soil viruses in tea gardens, although in some instances insect pathogenic viruses have been used to control tea pests. The potential of soil microorganisms is reported here, as well as recent techniques used to study microbial diversity and their genetic manipulation, aimed at improving the yield and quality of tea plants for sustainable production.

Abstract
Sustainable agricultural development requires comprehending the fundamental factors influencing farmers' adoption of safe production behavior. This study investigates intrinsic and extrinsic determinants, encompassing the influence of individual self-regulation and external monitoring, regarding the endorsement of safe labor practices among farmers in Kuan-Chung Plain, China. The findings underscore the pivotal role of personal self-regulation in stimulating farmers' implementation of safe production behavior. Additionally, governmental and public monitoring can act as catalysts, motivating farmers to shift from conventional agricultural production methods to safer alternatives. Moreover, the results revealed that a synergistic effect arises from the collaboration between public and governmental monitoring, combined with individual self-regulation. This collaborative approach significantly enhances farmers' propensity to embrace safe production behavior. Hence, policymakers should prioritize educating farmers on ethical restraint, optimizing policy strategies, and strengthening supervision practices to establish an effective platform for public monitoring. These measures will augment farmers' comprehension of the significance of safe production behavior and empower them to proactively implement these behaviors.

Abstract
Legacy phosphorus (P) in watersheds continuously affects the water quality. The time lag between anthropogenic P input and algal bloom has made P dynamics prediction in aquatic ecosystems more challenging. Whether the legacy P in the Yangtze River Watershed (YRW) exceeds its storage threshold remains unknown, and the continuous impact of legacy P on the water quality has not been analyzed. This study aimed to evaluate variation trends (1970-2018) and influencing factors for accumulated P in the YRW under different economic development periods, quantitatively identify the watershed P storage threshold based on the two split line models and estimate the time required for the return of legacy P to the baseline level using an exponential decay process. The results showed that the P storage threshold of the YRW was surpassed due to intense anthropogenic activities, and the residual P still had an impact on aquatic ecosystems for a long time. The dissolved total P loadings may become the top priority to achieve better P management goals. The time lags for the legacy P restoration would require for about 1000 years to be exhausted. The legacy P in the YRW would continuously undermine the restoration efforts of the water quality. The combined effects of watershed P surplus reductions and depletion of residual P may become essential to better manage P in the future. We still need to strengthen our efforts to make soil legacy P more absorbed by crops and improve sewage treatment capacity to achieve sustainable development of YRW.

Abstract
Excessive phosphorus (P) loadings cause major pollution concerns in large catchments. Quantifying the point and nonpoint P sources of large catchments is essential for catchment P management. Although phosphate oxygen isotopes (δ18O(PO4)) can reveal P sources and P cycling in catchments, quantifying multiple P sources in a whole catchment should be a research focus. Therefore, this study aimed to quantitatively identify the proportions of multiple potential end members in a typical large catchment (the Yangtze River Catchment) by combining the phosphate oxygen isotopes, land use type, mixed end-element model, and a Bayesian model. The δ18O(PO4) values of river water varied spatially from 4.9‰ to18.3‰ in the wet season and 6.0‰ to 20.9‰ in the dry season. Minor seasonal differences but obvious spatial changes in δ18O(PO4) values could illustrate how human activity changed the functioning of the system. The results of isotopic mass balance and the Bayesian model confirmed that controlling agricultural P from fertilizers was the key to achieving P emission reduction goals by reducing P inputs. Additionally, the effective rural domestic sewage treatment, development of composting technology, and resource utilization of phosphogypsum waste could also contribute to catchment P control. P sources in catchment ecosystems can be assessed by coupling an isotope approach and multiple-models.

Abstract
Introduction Microorganisms play an important role in the multifunctionality of soil ecosystems. Soil microbial diversity and functions have a great impact on plant growth and development. The interactions between tea trees and soil microbiota can be linked with planting patterns and management strategies, whose effects on soil microbial community structure and metabolites are still unclear. Methods Here we used amplicon sequencing and metabolomic analysis to investigate the differences in soil microbial composition and metabolites among three tea production systems: organic, non-organic, and intercropping. Results We detected significant differences among the three systems and found that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota and Chloroflexi were the main bacteria in the three soil groups, although they varied in relative abundance. Acidobacteria bacterium increased significantly in the organic and intercropping groups. For fungi, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the main differential fungal phyla. Fungi alpha-diversity in the non-organic group was significantly higher than that in the other two groups, and was correlated with multiple soil physical and chemical factors. Moreover, network analysis showed that bacteria and fungi were strongly correlated. The changes in soil microorganisms caused by management and planting patterns may affect soil quality through corresponding changes in metabolites. Metabolomic analysis showed differences in metabolite composition among different groups. It was also found that the arachidonic acid metabolic pathway was affected by changes in soil microorganisms, and may further affect soil quality in an essential manner. Discussion Planting patterns and management strategies may significantly affect soil microorganisms and therefore metabolites. Changes in soil microorganisms, especially in fungi, may alter soil quality by affecting soil physicochemical properties and metabolites. This study will provide new insights into soil quality monitoring from a microbiological perspective.

Abstract
Pig farm biogas slurry is being increasingly used as a potent organic fertilizer for sustainable agriculture under circular economy. However, the effect of biogas slurry on soil pH is currently controversial, and the underlying mechanisms especially in saline-alkali soils are not well understood. A saline-alkali soil (pH = 9.2, EC = 2.0 ms/cm) was selected for soil column (0-50 cm) experiments with (BS) and without (CK) addition of pig farm biogas slurry to investigate the soil pH change and its driving factors. Our results show that the soil pH under CK ranged between 9.1 and 9.5 across different soil depths. Compared to CK, the BS-treated soil had lower pH at 0-20 cm depth and higher pH at 20-30 cm depth (P < 0.01). The soil NH4+-N concentrations were negatively correlated with pH values under BS (P < 0.01), indicating that the oxidation of ammonium mainly contributed to the decrease of soil pH. Interestingly, the anions, such as Cl-, SO42- and NO3-, were accumulated in the topsoil (0-20 cm) under BS, resulting in the changed correlations of these anions with Na+ when compared to the control. FT-IR and 13C-NMR spectra uncovered that carboxyl, amide C, and total alkyl C groups may be responsible for reducing pH of the saline-alkali soil tested. The soil surface morphology confirmed a much tighter granular aggregate microstructure when mixing the biogas slurry with the soil. Overall, we concluded that from the perspective of soil pH, the utilization of biogas slurry for improving saline-alkali soil is feasible and sustainable.

Abstract
Introduction Pakchoi is an important leafy vegetable in China. Due to industrialization and urbanization, pakchoi has been cultivated in newly reclaimed mountainous lands in Zhejiang Province, China in recent years. However, immature soil is not suitable for plant growth and needs to be modified by the application of different organic fertilizer or microbial fertilizer based plant-growth-promoting microbe. In 2021, a high efficient plant-growth-promoting fungi (PGPF; Aspergillus brunneoviolaceus HZ23) was obtained from newly reclaimed land of Zhejiang Province, China. In order to valuate microbial fertilizer based A. brunneoviolaceus HZ23 (MF-HZ23) on pakchoi growth in immature soil, we investigated the effect of MF-HZ23 on soil properties, rhizosphere bacterial community structure, and metabolites of pakchoi rhizosphere soil samples. Methods The field experiment (four treatments, MF-HZ23, MF-ZH23 + CCF, CCF and the control) was completely randomly designed and carried out on newly reclaimed land in Yangqingmiao Village of Fuyang district, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China. In order to evaluate the influence of microbial fertilizer based A. brunneoviolaceus HZ23 on pakchoi in the newly reclaimed land, the number of pakchoi leaves, total fresh and dry weight of the seedlings was counted. In addition, the soil properties, including the pH, OMC, total N, AHN, available P, the genome sequencing, and metabolomics assay were also detected. Results The results revealed a significant difference between MF-HZ23 and the control in soil properties, bacterial community structure, and metabolites. Indeed, compared with the control, MF-HZ23 caused 30.66, 71.43, 47.31, 135.84, and 2099.90% increase in the soil pH, organic matter contents (OMC), total nitrogen (N), alkaline hydrolysis nitrogen (AHN), and available phosphorus (P), respectively. Meanwhile, MF-HZ23 caused 50.78, 317.47, and 34.40% increase in the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Verrucomicrobiota and 75.55, 23.27, 69.25, 45.88, 53.42, and 72.44% reduction in the relative abundance of Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota, Chloroflexi, Planctomycetota, Patescibacteria, and WPS-2, respectively, compared with the control based on 16S amplicon sequencing of soil bacteria. Furthermore, redundancy discriminant analysis (RDA) of bacterial communities and soil properties indicated that the main variables of bacterial communities included available P, AHN, pH, OMC, and total N. In addition, non-targeted metabolomics techniques (UHPLC-MS analysis) revealed that MF-HZ23 resulted in a great change in the kinds of metabolites in the rhizosphere soil. Indeed, in MF-HZ23 and the control group, there were six differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) belong to organoheterocyclic compounds, organic acids and derivatives, organic nitrogen compounds, and these six DEMs were significantly positively correlated with 23 genus of bacteria, which showed complicated interactions between bacteria and DEMs in pakchoi rhizosphere soil. Conclutions Overall, the results of this study revealed significant modification in physical, chemical, and biological properties of pakchoi soil. Microbial fertilizer based PGPF A. brunneoviolaceus HZ23 (MF-HZ23) can be used as a good amendment for newly reclaimed land.

Abstract
The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides led to a decline in the quality and yield of Bupleurum chinense. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of Trichoderma harzianum biofertilizer on the growth, yield, and quality of radix bupleuri and microbial responses. The results showed that T. harzianum biofertilizer promoted the growth of B. chinense and increased the yield and quality of radix bupleuri. In addition, it increased the contents of NH4 +-N, NO3 --N, available K, and available P and increased the activities of sucrase and catalase in the rhizosphere soil. High-throughput analysis showed that the dominant bacteria in the rhizosphere were Proteobacteria (28%), Acidobacteria (23%), and Actinobacteria (17%), whereas the dominant fungi were Ascomycota (49%), Zygomycota (30%), and Basidiomycota (6%). After the application of T. harzianum biofertilizer, the abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria (relative to total bacteria) and Ascomycota and Basidiomycota (relative to total fungi) increased, but the relative abundance of Acidobacteria decreased. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) showed that the relative abundance of Pseudarthrobacter, Streptomyces, Rhizobium, Nocardioides, Minimedusa, and Chaetomium were positively correlated with NO3 --N, NH4 +-N, available K, available P, sucrase, and catalase in microbial communities, whereas Aeromicrobium and Mortierella were positively correlated with soil organic matter and urease. These results suggest that T. harzianum biofertilizer could significantly improve the yield and quality of radix bupleuri by changing the structure of soil microbial flora and soil enzyme activity. Therefore, it could be recommended for commercial scale production of Bupleurum.

Abstract
Tea plantation can cause strong soil degradation, e.g. acidification, basic nutrient decrease and microbial diversity loss, naturally by its root activity and secondary by practically tremendous synthetic N input. Organic amendments application is considered a practical way to mitigate the above adverse consequence. However, the trade-off between agronomic and environmental effects on the application of the organic amendments is still under debate. Herein, we conducted a long-term field experiment with four treatments, including control (without and fertiliser) (CK), chemical fertiliser treatment (CF), chicken manure treatment (CM) and chicken manure combined with biochar treatment (CMB) to investigate the effects of organic amendments application on soil quality, heavy metal contamination and tea production in a tea plantation. Totally 16 plots were arranged randomly with a completely randomised design. The results showed that CM and CMB treatments improved soil nutrient, mitigated soil acidification and ameliorated soil porosity compared to CF treatment. CMB treatment displayed a relatively high tea yield and quality in three consecutive years of monitoring. However, CM and CMB treatments elevated the heavy metal (HM) potential ecological risk (RI) and Nemerow's composite index (Ps). CM treatment significantly increased available As, Pb, Cu and Zn concentrations compared to CF treatment, while CMB treatment significantly decreased available Cr and Cu concentrations and slightly decreased available Cd, Pb and Ni concentrations compared to CM treatment. But the increase of available As and Zn in CMB treatment compared to CM treatment also indicated adverse effects of biochar addition. The PLS-PM model showed HM risk had direct negative effects on tea quality. Moreover, soil fungal community revealed positive effects on tea yield and negative effects on tea quality. Overall, our study proved that CMB treatment could improve soil quality, reduce available Cr and Ni concentrations, maintain tea yield and increase tea quality.

Abstract
The increasing demands for crop production have become a great challenge while people also realizing the significance of reductions in synthetic chemical fertilizer use. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are proven biofertilizers for increasing crop yields by promoting plant growth via various direct or indirect mechanisms. Siderophilic bacteria, as an important type of PGPR, can secrete siderophores to chelate unusable Fe3+ in the soil for plant growth. Siderophilic bacteria have been shown to play vital roles in preventing diseases and enhancing the growth of plants. Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis (PPVY) is an important traditional Chinese herb. However, reports about its siderophilic bacteria are still rare. This study firstly isolated siderophilic bacteria from the rhizosphere soil of PPVY, identified by morphological and physio-biochemical characteristics as well as 16S rRNA sequence analysis. The dominant genus in the rhizobacteria of PPVY was Bacillus. Among 22 isolates, 21 isolates produced siderophores. The relative amount of siderophores ranged from 4 to 41%. Most of the isolates produced hydroxamate siderophores and some produced catechol. Four isolates belonging to Enterobacter produced the catechol type, and none of them produced carboxylate siderophores. Intriguingly, 16 strains could produce substances that have inhibitory activity against Candida albicans only in an iron-limited medium (SA medium). The effects of different concentrations of Fe3+ and three types of synthetic chemical fertilizers on AS19 growth, siderophore production, and swimming motility were first evaluated from multiple aspects. The study also found that the cell-free supernatant (CFS) with high siderophore units (SUs) of AS19 strain could significantly promote the germination of pepper and maize seeds and the development of the shoots and leaves of Gynura divaricata (Linn.). The bacterial solution of AS19 strain could significantly promote the elongation of the roots of G. divaricata (Linn.). Due to its combined traits promoting plant growth and seed germination, the AS19 has the potential to become a bioinoculant. This study will broaden the application prospects of the siderophilic bacteria-AS19 as biofertilizers for future sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Tea is the main commercial crop grown in China, and excessive application of chemical fertilizers in tea plantations is common. However, the potential to reduce chemical fertilizer use in tea plantations is unclear. In this study, Zhejiang Province was selected as the research object to systematically analyze the potential for tea plantation chemical-fertilizer reduction at different spatial scales. The geographic information system-based analytic hierarchy process method and Soil and Water Assessment Tool model were used to determine the chemical fertilizer reduction potential at the province scale and watershed scale, respectively. At the field scale, two consecutive years of field experiments were conducted on a tea plantation. Province-level analysis showed that 51.7% of the area had an average total fertilization intensity greater than 350 kg/hm2 and a high reduction potential. Watershed analysis revealed that chemical fertilizer reduction had better potential in reducing total nitrogen and total phosphorus inputs to runoff in the short term, whereas 50% organic fertilizer substitution was the best strategy to achieve long-term effects. The field experiments further proved that organic fertilizer substitution balanced tea growth and environmental protection. This study provides a useful method to investigate strategies to reduce chemical fertilizer use in tea-growing areas.

Reducing chemical fertilizer use in crop production has become a consensus, and the effects of chemical fertilizer reduction on yield, water consumption and water environment urgently need to be explored. A field experiment including four fertilization treatments: normal fertilizer application (NFA), 15%, 30% and 45% fertilizer reduction (FR) was conducted and the water footprint (WF) was used as an indicator to explore how the chemical fertilizer reduction affected the maize WF. The results showed that the blue, green and total WFs of maize in the 45% FR and NFA treatments were larger than those in the 30% FR and 15% FR treatments in 2018 and 2019. The grey WFs of maize in the NFA treatment were the highest in 2018 and 2019, exhibiting a trend that the grey WFs in the NFA treatment >15% FR treatment >30% FR treatment >45% FR treatment in 2018 and those in the NFA treatment >45% FR treatment >30% FR treatment >15% FR treatment in 2019. The optimal treatment was the 15-30% FR compared with the current fertilization, in which the total WF of maize can be minimized and the maize yield can be maximized at the same time. Precipitation had a wide-ranging impact on the yield and WF of maize, especially the amount, intensity and interval of rainfall, which had an evident impact on the grey WF. This study is expected to provide a data foundation for reducing chemical fertilizer and improving water and fertilizer use efficiency in maize production.

Abstract
Tea plant is an economically important crop in China, but long-term monoculture and substantial chemical nitrogen fertilizer input cause soil acidification, which in turn affects the nutrient supply and tea quality. Intercropping has drawn more attention in tea gardens because this pattern is expected to improve soil fertility and tea quality and change the soil microbial community composition. However, the roles of some key microorganisms in rhizosphere soils have not been well characterized. Hereby, a "soybean in summer and smooth vetch in winter" mode was selected to investigate the effects of intercropped legumes in a tea garden on soil fertility, tea quality, and the potential changes in beneficial bacteria such as Bacillus. Our data showed that when soybeans were turned into soil, intercropping system exhibited higher soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), tea quality indices and the expression of Camellia sinensis glutamine synthetase gene (CsGS). Notably, intercropping significantly affected the bacterial communities and decreased the relative abundance of Bacillus but increased its absolute abundance. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BM1 was isolated from intercropped soil and showed outstanding plant growth-promoting (PGP) properties when coinoculated with rhizobia. In winter, intercropping with smooth vetch had a beneficial effect on soil properties and tea quality. Comparably, coinoculation with strain BM1 and Rhizobium leguminosarum Vic5 on smooth vetch (Vicia villosa) showed huge improvements in SOM, TN and quality of tea leaves, accompanied by the highest level of amino acids and lowest levels of polyphenol and caffeine (p < 0.05). According to these results, our findings demonstrate that intercropping with some legumes in the tea garden is a strategy that increases SOM, TN and tea quality, and some PGP Bacillus species are optional to obtain an amplification effect.

Abstract
Organic inputs as a substitution for, or addition to, chemical fertilizers can potentially mitigate N losses. However, it is not well known how their effects on N leaching and runoff depend on application approaches. We conducted a global meta-analysis of 129 studies to compare the effects of organic inputs on N export via leaching and runoff. We compared three application approaches: chemical fertilizer N substituted by organic fertilizer with: 1) equal amounts of total N or, 2) equal amounts of mineral N and 3) additional organic fertilizer N on top of chemical fertilizer. The meta-analysis showed that organic inputs reduced overall N leaching and runoff by 15% and 29%, respectively, without compromising crop yield, and that this effect was significantly influenced by the application approach taken. Organic substitution of chemical fertilizer N with equal amounts of total N decreased both leaching and runoff by more than 30% and hardly affected crop yield. Substitution with equal amounts of mineral N generally increased crop yield by 6% but also increased N leaching by 21%. Organic inputs in addition to chemical fertilizer N did not affect leaching and runoff. The differences between application approaches were reinforced with increased treatment duration. The loss ratios of leaching and runoff were 14% and 4.5%, respectively, from chemical fertilizer, and 9.2% and 2.6%, respectively, from organic fertilizer. The optimal substitution rates differed between leaching (40-60%) and runoff (60-100%) when substitution was based on equal amounts of total N. We conclude that substitution of chemical for organic fertilizer at equal amounts of total N is most effective in reducing N export via leaching and runoff without compromising crop production.

Abstract
Decline disease causes severe damage to bayberry. However, the cause of this disease remains unclear. Interestingly, our previous studies found that the disease severity is related with the level of soil fertilizer. This study aims to explore the effect and mechanism of compound fertilizer (CF) and bio-organic fertilizer (OF) in this disease by investigating the vegetative growth, fruit characters, soil property, rhizosphere microflora and metabolites. Results indicated that compared with the disease control, CF and OF exhibited differential effect in plant healthy and soil quality, together with the increase in relative abundance of Burkholderia and Mortierella, and the reduction in that of Rhizomicrobium and Acidibacter, Trichoderma, and Cladophialophora reduced. The relative abundance of Geminibasidium were increased by CF (251.79%) but reduced by OF (13.99%). In general, the composition of bacterial and fungal communities in rhizosphere soil was affected significantly at genus level by exchangeable calcium, available phosphorus, and exchangeable magnesium, while the former two variables had a greater influence in bacterial communities than fungal communities. Analysis of GC-MS metabonomics indicated that compared to the disease control, CF and OF significantly changed the contents of 31 and 45 metabolites, respectively, while both fertilizers changed C5-branched dibasic acid, galactose, and pyrimidine metabolic pathway. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed at the phylum, order and genus levels between microbial groups and secondary metabolites of bayberry rhizosphere soil. In summary, the results provide a new way for rejuvenation of this diseased bayberry trees.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the performance of a novel humic acid modified oyster shell (MOS) bulking agent on the digestate composting. MOS was prepared by immobilizing humic acid onto oyster shell using solid phase grafting method, and then applied to the composting process. Results showed more obvious degradation of lignocellulose was observed in the MOS treatment, which was probably due to the high relative abundance of Actinobacteria. Moreover, the addition of MOS could significantly preserve NH4+ and reduce the NO3- generation with the decreasing abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea. Besides, adding MOS reduced the N2O emission by 59.63% compared with the control. After composting, excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra demonstrated that the humification degree as well as compost maturity was enhanced with MOS added.

Abstract
Water-scarce areas are continually increasing worldwide. This factor reduces the quantity and quality of crops produced in affected areas. Physical seed treatments are considered economical and ecofriendly solutions for such problems. It was hypothesized that a moderately drought-tolerant crop grown from seeds treated with a He-Ne laser utilizes water-limited conditions better than plants grown from untreated seeds. A field study was conducted, growing a moderately drought tolerant crop (sunflower) with supportive seed treatment (He-Ne laser treatment at 300 mJ) for 0, 1, 2, and 3 min. Thirty-day-old plants were subjected to two irrigation conditions: 100% (normal) and 50% (water stress). Harvesting was done at flowering (60-day-old plants) at full maturity. The sunflowers maintained growth and yield under water limitation with a reduced achene number. At 50%, irrigation, there was a reduction in chlorophyll a, a+b and a/b; catalase activity; soluble sugars; and anthocyanin, alongside elevated proline. The improved chlorophyll a, a+b and a/b; metabolisable energy; nutritional value; and yield in the plants grown from He-Ne-laser-treated seeds support our hypothesis. Seeds with 2-min exposure to a He-Ne laser performed best regarding leaf area; leaf number; leaf biomass; chlorophyll a, a+b and a/b; per cent oil yield; 50-achene weight; achene weight per plant; carotenoid content; and total soluble phenolic compound content. Thereafter, the leaves from the best performing level of treatment (2 min) were subjected to high-performance-liquid-chromatography-based phenolic profiling and gas-chromatography-based fatty acid profiling of the oil yield. The He-Ne laser treatment led to the accumulation of nutraceutical phenolic compounds and improved the unsaturated-to-saturated fatty acid ratio of the oil. In conclusion, 2-min He-Ne laser seed treatment could be the best strategy to improve the yield and nutritional value of sunflowers grown in water-limited areas.

Abstract
Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) inputs to farmland via fertilizer application are potential sources of C and N that influence soil acidification and water eutrophication. A pilot study was conducted to compare the effects of compound fertilizer and rapeseed cake organic fertilizer on C and N preservation in the soils and runoff of a tea plantation as well as the C and N isotopic fractionation in soils over the three annual cycles of fertilization and tea-leaf harvest. Overall, rapeseed cake organic fertilization effectively increased the pH, total organic matter, NH4-N and NO3-N in soils by 2.19-4.29%, 8.04-21.14%, 53.65-100.32% and 5.74-54.08%, respectively, but decreased NH4-N inputs in runoff by 10.36-25.12% and NO3-N inputs in runoff by 8.94-24.10% relative to the same rate of pure N in compound fertilizer. Before fertilization in February, the average δ13C and δ15N were -25.15‰ and 1.88‰, while after a full year of fertilization and tea-leaf harvesting in October, the average soil δ13C and δ15N contents were -23.83‰ and -0.33‰ after compound fertilization and -26.22‰ and 1.64‰ after rapeseed cake organic fertilization, respectively, indicating the evident effects of fertilization on the isotopic fractionation in soil. In addition, the fractionation extent was positively associated with the fertilization rates under both fertilizers. However, the two fertilization types had different effects on the C and N isotope fractionations, with rapeseed cake organic fertilization contributing more to δ13C (21.07-81.80%) but less to δ15N (18.20-78.93%) and compound fertilization presenting the opposite results (1.88-46.18% and 53.82-98.12%, respectively). This study demonstrates that rapeseed cake organic fertilization can better preserve soil C and N pools while reducing their runoff in tea plantations, which may greatly hinder the regional soil acidification and water eutrophication trends.

Abstract
As a main agronomic intervention in tea cultivation, nitrogen (N) application is useful to improve tea yield and quality. However, the effects of N application on the formation of tea quality-related metabolites have not been fully studied, especially in long-term field trials. In this study, a 10-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of long-term N application treatments on tea quality-related metabolites, their precursors, and related gene expression. Long-term N application up-regulated the expression of key genes for chlorophyll synthesis and promoted its synthesis, thus increasing tea yield. It also significantly increased the contents of total free amino acids, especially l-theanine, in fresh tea leaves, while decreasing the catechin content, which is conducive to enhancing tea liquor freshness. However, long-term N application significantly reduced the contents of benzyl alcohol and 2-phenylethanol in fresh tea leaves, and also reduced (E)-nerolidol and indole in withered leaves, which were not conducive to the formation of floral and fruity aroma compounds. In general, an appropriate amount of N fertilizer (225 kg/hm2) balanced tea yield and quality. These results not only provide essential information on how N application affects tea quality, but also provide detailed experimental data for field fertilization.

Evaluation of Multifarious Plant Growth Promoting Trials of Yeast Isolated from the Soil of Assam Tea ( Camellia sinensis var. assamica) Plantations in Northern Thailand. Abstract
Some soil microorganisms, especially bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, play a role in the promotion of plant growth. However, plant growth promotion involving yeasts in soil has not yet been extensively investigated. This study aimed to isolate and identify yeast strains obtained from soils of the Assam tea plant (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) in northern Thailand and to investigate their plant growth promoting capabilities. A total of 42 yeast strains were obtained and identified by analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene. We identified 35 strains of six species belonging to the phylum Ascomycota, namely Aureobasidium melanogenum, Kazachstania aquatica, Saturnispora diversa, Saturnispora sekii, Schwanniomyces pseudopolymorphus and Wickerhamomyces anomalus, and six species were determined to belong to the phylum Basidiomycota, namely Apiotrichum scarabaeorum, Curvibasidium pallidicorallinum, Papiliotrema laurentii, Rhodosporidiobolus ruineniae, Trichosporon asahii and Trichosporon coremiiforme. Seven strains were representative of potential new species and belonged to the genera Galactomyces and Wickerhamomyces. A total of 28 strains were found to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in a range of 2.12 to 37.32 mg/L, with the highest amount of IAA produced by R. ruineniae SDBR-CMU-S1-03. All yeast strains were positive in terms of ammonia production, and only eight strains were positive for siderophore production. Two yeast species, P. laurentii and W. anomalus, were able to solubilize the insoluble form of calcium and zinc. The ability to produce amylase, endogulcanase, lipase, pectinase, protease and xylanase was dependent upon the yeast species and strain involved.
