Abstract
Biochar amendments are effective in stabilizing soil aggregates and improving soil organic carbon (SOC) content. However, the effects of biochar on highly acidic soil and their relation with soil SOC stability remain understudied. The study aimed to investigate the impact of biochar on changes of aggregate distribution and SOC stability in a highly acidic tea plantation soils over an eight-year period. Soil samples were collected from plots with varying biochar application amounts (0, 2.5 t ha-1, 5 t ha-1, 10 t ha-1, 20 t ha-1 and 40 t ha-1). The content of SOC, iron bound organic carbon (OC-Fe), particulate organic carbon (POC), mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) and the functional group composition of SOC was analyzed. The results indicated that in the biochar application treatments, the value of soil pH, SOC, POC and MAOC contents were increased from 3.92 to 4.28, 6.68%-187.02%, 8.31%-66.78% and 13.07%-236.47% respectively, compared with CK, while the content of macro-aggregate (particle size>0.25 mm) and soil aggregates mean weight diameter (MWD) significantly increased with higher biochar application amounts. But dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and OC-Fe content exhibited downward trend, decreased from 2.43% to 6.97% and 4.18%-19.91%. Furthermore, aromatic-C levels increased, with increased biochar application amounts. The integration of biochar not only bolstered soil aggregate stability but also amplified the presence of aromatic-C, thereby enhancing the resilience of organic carbon in highly acidic tea garden soil (BC40 > BC20 > BC5>BC2.5 > BC10 > CK), with increases ranging from 6% to 47%. The principal component analysis and structural equation modeling identified soil pH, TN, SOC, POC, MAOC, R > 0.25 and MWD as key factors of soil organic carbon stability. These findings provide crucial insights into the mechanism underlying biochar's efficiency in fortifying organic carbon stability, particularly in the context of highly acidic soil.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) are widespread in agroecosystems and profoundly impact soil microbiome and nutrient cycling. However, the effects of MPs on soil autotrophic ammonium oxidization processes, including nitrification, complete ammonium oxidation (comammox), anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to iron reduction (Feammox), remain unclear. These processes are the rate-limiting steps of nitrogen cycling in agroecosystems. Here, our work unveiled that exposures of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polylactic acid (PLA), and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) MPs significantly modulated ammonium oxidization pathways with distinct type- and dose-dependent effects. Nitrification remained the main contributor (56.4-70.7 %) to soil ammonium removal, followed by comammox (11.7-25.6 %), anammox (5.0-20.2 %) and Feammox (3.3-11.6 %). Compared with conventional nonbiodegradable MPs (i.e., PE and PP), biodegradable MPs (i.e., PLA and PBAT) exhibited more pronounced impacts on soil nutrient conditions and functional microbes, which collectively induced alterations in soil ammonium oxidation. Interestingly, low-dose PLA and PBAT remarkably enhanced the roles of anammox and Feammox in soil ammonium removal, contributing to the mitigation of soil acidification in agroecosystems. This study highlights the diverse responses of ammonium oxidization pathways to MPs, further deepening our understanding of how MPs affect biogeochemical cycling and enriching strategies for agricultural managements amid increasing MPs pollution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The utilization of chemical fertilizers is a key measure for maintaining tea yield and quality, but excessive use has negative environmental impacts. The substitution of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer has been promoted to sustain crop yield and soil quality. However, knowledge gaps regarding the effects of organic substitution on soil quality and tea yield in tea plantations still exist. RESULTS A field experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of organic substitution treatments (i.e. 25% partial substitution: biogas slurry + green manure + formula fertilizer, BFG; sheep manure + formula fertilizer, OFF; 100% complete substitution: sheep manure + green manure, OG) on the soil quality, tea yield and quality, and nitrogen utilization efficiency in southwestern China. Results showed that all organic substitution treatments slightly increased soil pH, and significantly increased soil organic matter by 13.22-14.88% compared to conventional fertilization (CF). The BFG treatment was the most effective in enhancing the soil quality index, showing increases of 16.80%, 8.37% and 24.87% higher than the CF, OFF and OG treatments, respectively. Tea yield significantly increased under the BFG, OFF and OG treatments by 11.97%, 13.58% and 5.90% compared to CF, respectively. The BFG treatment increased the amino acid content by 7.78% and decreased the tea polyphenol/amino acid ratio by 6.87%. Additionally, the BFG, OFF and OG treatments greatly increased the nitrogen utilization efficiency of young sprouts by 70.71%, 82.54% and 34.28%, respectively. CONCLUSION Overall, partial organic substitution could effectively improve soil quality while maintaining tea yield. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In this study, the performance of a novel organic tea compost developed for the first time in the world from raw tea waste from tea processing factories and enriched with worms, beneficial microorganisms, and enzymes was tested in comparison to chemical fertilizers in tea plantations in Rize and Artvin provinces, where the most intensive tea cultivation is carried out in Turkey. In the field trials, the developed organic tea vermicompost was incorporated into the root zones of the plants in the tea plantations in amounts of 1000 (OVT1), 2000 (OVT2) and 4000 (OVT4) (kg ha-1). The experimental design included a control group without OVT applications and positive controls with chemical fertilizers (N: P: K 25:5:10, (CF) 1200 kg ha-1) commonly used by local growers. The evaluation included field trials over two years. The average yields obtained in two-year field trials in five different areas were: Control (6326), OVT1 (7082), OVT2 (7408), OVT4 (7910), and CF (8028) kg ha-1. Notably, there was no significant statistical difference in yields between the organic (at 4000 kg ha-1 ) and chemical fertilizers (at 1200 kg ha-1). The highest nutrient contents were obtained when CF and OVT4 were applied. According to the average values across all regions, the application of OVT4 increased the uptake of 63% N, 18% K, 75% P, 21% Mg, 19% Na, 29% Ca, 28% Zn, 11% Cu and 24% Mn compared to the control group. The application of chemical fertilizers increased the uptake of 75% N, 21% K, 75% P, 21% Mg, 28% Na, 27% Ca, 30% Zn, 18% Cu and 31% Mn compared to the control group. The organic fertilizer treatment had the lowest levels of antioxidants compared to the control groups and the chemical fertilizers. It was also found that the organic fertilizer increased the levels of amino acids, organic acids and chlorophyll in the tea plant. Its low antioxidant activity and proline content prepared them for or protected them from stress conditions. With these properties, the biotechnologically developed organic tea compost fertilizer has proven to be very promising for tea cultivation and organic plant production.

Abstract
Soil acidification has emerged as a critical limiting factor for the sustainable development of the tea industry. In this article, a comprehensive review of 63 original research articles focusing on the impact of amendments on the pH in tea plantations soil was conducted. Through meta-analysis, the effect of applying soil amendments to increase the pH of tea plantation soil and its influencing factors were investigated. The results revealed that lime had a significant impact, increasing the pH by 18% in tea plantation soil, while rapeseed cake had a minimal (2%) effect. It was observed that as the quantity of amendments and pH levels increased, so did their impact on the pH of tea plantation soil. Subgroup analysis within biochar showed varying effects, depending on soil pH, with an 11% increase in acidic soil. Among these amendments, biochar produced at pyrolysis temperature ranging from 501-600 °C and derived from animal waste demonstrated significant effect on increasing soil pH in tea plantations by 9% and 12%, respectively. This study offers valuable insights into improving and ensuring the health and sustainability of tea plantations.

Abstract
The issue of soil acidification in tea plantations has become a critical concern due to its potential impact on tea quality and plant health. Understanding the factors contributing to soil acidification is essential for implementing effective soil management strategies in tea-growing regions. In this study, a field study was conducted to investigate the effects of tea plantations on soil acidification and the associated acid-base buffering capacity (pHBC). We assessed acidification, pHBC, nutrient concentrations, and cation contents in the top 0-20 cm layer of soil across forty tea gardens of varying stand ages (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-40 years old) in Anji County, Zhejiang Province, China. The results revealed evident soil acidification due to tea plantation activities, with the lowest soil pH observed in tea gardens aged 10-20 and 20-40 years. Higher levels of soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), Olsen phosphorus (Olsen-P), available iron (Fe), and exchangeable hydrogen (H+) were notably recorded in 10-20 and 20-40 years old tea garden soils, suggesting an increased risk of soil acidification with prolonged tea cultivation. Furthermore, prolonged tea cultivation correlated with increased pHBC, which amplified with tea stand ages. The investigation of the relationship between soil pHBC and various parameters highlighted significant influences from soil pH, SOM, cation exchange capacity, TN, available potassium, Olsen-P, exchangeable acids (including H+ and aluminum), available Fe, and available zinc. Consequently, these findings underscore a substantial risk of soil acidification in tea gardens within the monitored region, with SOM and TN content being key driving factors influencing pHBC.

Abstract
Intercropping with Pleurotus ostreatus has been demonstrated to increase the tea yield and alleviate soil acidification in tea gardens. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, high-throughput sequencing and Biolog Eco analysis were performed to identify changes in the community structure and abundance of soil microorganisms in the P. ostreatus intercropped tea garden at different seasons (April and September). The results showed that the soil microbial diversity of rhizosphere decreased in April, while rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil microbial diversity increased in September in the P. ostreatus intercropped tea garden. The diversity of tea tree root microorganisms increased in both periods. In addition, the number of fungi associated with organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling, such as Penicillium, Trichoderma, and Trechispora, was significantly higher in the intercropped group than in the control group. Intercropping with P. ostreatus increased the levels of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and available phosphorus (AP) in the soil. It also improved the content of secondary metabolites, such as tea catechins, and polysaccharides in tea buds. Microbial network analysis showed that Unclassified_o__Helotiales, and Devosia were positively correlated with soil TN and pH, while Lactobacillus, Acidothermus, and Monascus were positively correlated with flavone, AE, and catechins in tea trees. In conclusion, intercropping with P. ostreatus can improve the physical and chemical properties of soil and the composition and structure of microbial communities in tea gardens, which has significant potential for application in monoculture tea gardens with acidic soils.

Abstract
Intercropping has been recommended as a beneficial cropping practice for improving soil characteristic and tea quality. However, there is limited research on the effects of intercropping fruit trees on soil chemical properties, soil aggregate structure, and tea quality components. In this study, intercropping fruit trees, specifically loquats and citrus, had a significant impact on the total available nutrients, AMN, and AP in soil. During spring and autumn seasons, the soil large-macroaggregates (>2 mm) proportion increased by 5.93% and 19.03%, as well as 29.23% and 19.14%, respectively, when intercropping loquats and citrus. Similarly, intercropping waxberry resulted in a highest small-macroaggregates (0.25 mm-2 mm) proportion at 54.89% and 77.32%. Soil aggregate stability parameters of the R0.25, MWD, and GMD were generally considered better soil aggregate stability indicators, and significantly improved in intercropping systems. Intercropping waxberry with higher values for those aggregate stability parameters and lower D values, showed a better soil aggregate distribution, while intercropping loquats and citrus at higher levels of AMN and AP in different soil aggregate sizes. As the soil aggregate sizes increased, the AMN and AP contents gradually decreased. Furthermore, the enhanced levels of amino acids were observed under loquat, waxberry, and citrus intercropping in spring, which increased by 27.98%, 27.35%, and 26.21%, respectively. The contents of tea polyphenol and caffeine were lower under loquat and citrus intercropping in spring. These findings indicated that intercropping fruit trees, specifically loquat and citrus, have immense potential in promoting the green and sustainable development of tea plantations.

Abstract
Camellia sinensis is an important economic plant grown in southern subtropical hilly areas, especially in China, mainly for the production of tea. Soil acidification is a significant cause of the reduction of yield and quality and continuous cropping obstacles in tea plants. Therefore, chemical and microbial properties of tea growing soils were investigated and phenolic acid-degrading bacteria were isolated from a tea plantation. Chemical and ICP-AES investigations showed that the soils tested were acidic, with pH values of 4.05-5.08, and the pH negatively correlated with K (p < 0.01), Al (p < 0.05), Fe and P. Aluminum was the highest (47-584 mg/kg) nonessential element. Based on high-throughput sequencing, a total of 34 phyla and 583 genera were identified in tea plantation soils. Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the main dominant phyla and the highest abundance of Acidobacteria was found in three soils, with nearly 22% for the genus Gp2. Based on the functional abundance values, general function predicts the highest abundance, while the abundance of amino acids and carbon transport and metabolism were higher in soils with pH less than 5. According to Biolog Eco Plate™ assay, the soil microorganisms utilized amino acids well, followed by polymers and phenolic acids. Three strains with good phenolic acid degradation rates were obtained, and they were identified as Bacillus thuringiensis B1, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B2 and Bacillus subtilis B3, respectively. The three strains significantly relieved the inhibition of peanut germination and growth by ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, cinnamic acid, and mixed acids. Combination of the three isolates showed reduced relief of the four phenolic acids due to the antagonist of B2 against B1 and B3. The three phenolic acid degradation strains isolated from acidic soils display potential in improving the acidification and imbalance in soils of C. sinensis.

Abstract
Leaves of Camellia sinensis plants are used to produce tea, one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, containing a wide variety of bioactive compounds that help to promote human health. Tea cultivation is economically important, and its sustainable production can have significant consequences in providing agricultural opportunities and lowering extreme poverty. Soil parameters are well known to affect the quality of the resultant leaves and consequently, the understanding of the diversity and functions of soil microorganisms in tea gardens will provide insight to harnessing soil microbial communities to improve tea yield and quality. Current analyses indicate that tea garden soils possess a rich composition of diverse microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) of which the bacterial Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Firmicutes and Chloroflexi and fungal Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Glomeromycota are the prominent groups. When optimized, these microbes' function in keeping garden soil ecosystems balanced by acting on nutrient cycling processes, biofertilizers, biocontrol of pests and pathogens, and bioremediation of persistent organic chemicals. Here, we summarize research on the activities of (tea garden) soil microorganisms as biofertilizers, biological control agents and as bioremediators to improve soil health and consequently, tea yield and quality, focusing mainly on bacterial and fungal members. Recent advances in molecular techniques that characterize the diverse microorganisms in tea gardens are examined. In terms of viruses there is a paucity of information regarding any beneficial functions of soil viruses in tea gardens, although in some instances insect pathogenic viruses have been used to control tea pests. The potential of soil microorganisms is reported here, as well as recent techniques used to study microbial diversity and their genetic manipulation, aimed at improving the yield and quality of tea plants for sustainable production.

Abstract
Organic-based fertilizers have been ratified to be effective in ameliorating tea growth and the fertility of soil. However, the effect of integrated fertilization on tea growth and quality and the chemical properties of the soil in tea gardens are unclear. To address this, from 2020 to 2021, five different treatments were carried out in the greenhouse of the Tea Research Institute, Hangzhou, CAAS, including CK (control), NPK (chemical fertilizers), RC (rapeseed cake), NPK+B (chemical fertilizer + biochar), and NPK+RC, to investigate the effects of different fertilizations on soil chemistry and tea growth and quality. The results indicated that NPK+B and NPK+RC significantly improved the different amino acid and catechin concentrations in the young shoots, stems, and roots of the tea compared to the CK. The plant growth parameters, e.g., the plant height, no. of leaves, mid-stem girth, and fresh weights of stems and leaves, were significantly increased with integrated fertilization (NPK+B and NPK+RC) compared to the CK and solo organic and inorganic fertilizers. The chlorophyll contents (Chl a, Chl b, and Chl a+b) were generally higher with NPK+RC than with the CK (37%, 35%, and 36%), RC (14%, 26%, and 18%), and NPK (9%, 13%, and 11%) treatments. Integrated fertilization buffered the acidic soil of the tea garden and decreased the soil C:N ratio. NPK+RC also significantly increased the soil's total C (31% and 16%), N (43% and 31%), P (65% and 40%), available P (31% and 58%), K (70% and 25%), nitrate (504% and 188%), and ammonium (267% and 146%) concentrations compared to the CK and RC. The soil macro- (Mg and Ca) and micronutrients (Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cu) were significantly improved by the RC (100% and 72%) (49%, 161%, 112%, and 40%) and NPK+RC (88% and 48%) (47%, 75%, 45%, and 14%) compared to the CK. The chlorophyll contents and soil macro- and micronutrients were all significantly positively correlated with tea quality (amino acids and catechin contents) and growth. These results indicated that integrated fertilization improved the soil nutrient status, which is associated with the improvement of tea growth and quality. Thus, integrated nutrient management is a feasible tool for improving tea growth, quality, and low nutrient levels in the soil.

Abstract
This study examines the causal relationships and interdependencies among three dimensions of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Africa: environmental factors, agricultural production (for societal aspects), and finance development (for economic aspects). The study focuses on three regions, the whole SSA (Sub-Saharan Africa, excluding the high-income countries), West-Central Africa (W-CA), and South and East Africa (S-EA), and uses data from 1970 to 2018. It uses vector error correction model (VECM), impulse response function (IRF), and analysis of causality direction methods. The findings indicate bidirectional causal effects among the three SDG dimensions in Africa. Finance development factors influence both environmental and agricultural factors, while agro-production factors significantly affect both finance development and environmental factors. This study concludes that bidirectional causal effects exist within these dimensions, confirming their interdependencies and emphasizing the need for integrating these dimensions into African sustainable development goals. Recommendations include incorporating green aspects in financing development plans and establishing regulatory authorities to effectively coordinate and control these sustainable dimensions at both the Sub-Saharan Africa and state levels, ensuring impactful greenhouse and sustainable agriculture development for sustainable food production.

Abstract
Introduction Organic agriculture is highly regarded by people for its commitment to health, ecology, care, and fairness. The soil microbial community responds quickly to environmental changes and is a good indicator for evaluating soil microecology. Therefore, from the perspective of soil microbial communities, elucidating the impact of organic management on soil microecology in tea plantations has great significance for improving local tea plantation systems. Methods The study collected bulk soil from organic management (OM) and conventional management (CM) tea plantations in Pu'er City, a major tea-producing area in China, and analyzed their species diversity, structural composition, and co-occurrence networks using metagenomics technology. Results Compared with CM, the diversity index (Shannon) and evenness index (Heip) of soil fungi increased by 7.38% and 84.2% in OM tea plantations, respectively. The relative abundance of microorganisms related to the nitrogen cycle increased. Specifically, there was a significant increase in Rhodobiales, a 2-fold increase in Nitrospirae, and approximately 1.95 and 2.03 times increases in unclassified genera within Betaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria, respectively. The relative abundance of plant residue degradation species, Gemmatimonadetes, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota, increased by 2.8, 1, and 1.4 times, respectively. The OM was conducive to the establishment of collaborative relationships among bacterial species and increased the diversity and complexity of species relationships in fungal communities. The network stability of soil ecosystems was promoted. The organic tea plantations' keystone taxa contained mycorrhizal fungi (Pezoloma_ericae, Rhizophagus_irregularis, Rhizophagus_clarus), as well as species involved in soil nitrogen metabolism (Acidobacteria_bacterium, Acidobacteriia_bacterium_AA117, Sphingomonas_sp._URHD0007, Enhydrobacter_aerosaccus), pathogen (Erysiphe_pulchra), and parasites (Paramycosporidium saccamoeba). The partial least squares method (PLS-SEM) indicated that OM affected N-NH4 + negatively, increasing the abundance of fungi, and thereby positively affecting the Shannon index. Conclusion In brief, reasonable organic management can improve the diversity of soil microorganisms, increase the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria in tea plantation soil, and promote the stability of the soil microbial ecological network.

Abstract
Tea plants are an economically important crop and conducting research on tea breeding contributes to enhancing the yield and quality of tea leaves as well as breeding traits that satisfy the requirements of the public. This study reviews the current status of tea plants germplasm resources and their utilization, which has provided genetic material for the application of multi-omics, including genomics and transcriptomics in breeding. Various molecular markers for breeding were designed based on multi-omics, and available approaches in the direction of high yield, quality and resistance in tea plants breeding are proposed. Additionally, future breeding of tea plants based on single-cellomics, pangenomics, plant-microbe interactions and epigenetics are proposed and provided as references. This study aims to provide inspiration and guidance for advancing the development of genetic breeding in tea plants, as well as providing implications for breeding research in other crops.

Abstract
Bamboo charcoal, a type of manufactured biochar, is produced by pyrolyzing bamboo residue under anoxic conditions. Its beneficial properties in absorption, catalyst support, and agricultural function have attracted significant attention; however, relatively few studies have examined its effects on the soil microbiota. In this study, we analyzed the effects of bamboo charcoal on soil physicochemical properties, enzymes, and microbial community structure in tea plantations and investigated the optimal amount of bamboo charcoal to be added to organic fertilizer. The results show that bamboo charcoal can further increase soil available nitrogen, total and available phosphorus and potassium, organic carbon content, pH, and urease activity. However, only the combined use of bamboo charcoal and organic fertilizer significantly increased total nitrogen, sucrase, and β-glucosidase activities in the soil. Bamboo charcoal also significantly increased the Chao1 and Shannon indices of microbiota diversity in a concentration-dependent manner. The structure of the bacterial community changed significantly after the bamboo charcoal addition, with Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes increasing and Acidobacteria decreasing. This study provides fundamental insights into the suitability of bamboo charcoal application for the ecological remediation of diseased soils.

Abstract
Introduction Microorganisms play an important role in the multifunctionality of soil ecosystems. Soil microbial diversity and functions have a great impact on plant growth and development. The interactions between tea trees and soil microbiota can be linked with planting patterns and management strategies, whose effects on soil microbial community structure and metabolites are still unclear. Methods Here we used amplicon sequencing and metabolomic analysis to investigate the differences in soil microbial composition and metabolites among three tea production systems: organic, non-organic, and intercropping. Results We detected significant differences among the three systems and found that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota, Actinobacteriota and Chloroflexi were the main bacteria in the three soil groups, although they varied in relative abundance. Acidobacteria bacterium increased significantly in the organic and intercropping groups. For fungi, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the main differential fungal phyla. Fungi alpha-diversity in the non-organic group was significantly higher than that in the other two groups, and was correlated with multiple soil physical and chemical factors. Moreover, network analysis showed that bacteria and fungi were strongly correlated. The changes in soil microorganisms caused by management and planting patterns may affect soil quality through corresponding changes in metabolites. Metabolomic analysis showed differences in metabolite composition among different groups. It was also found that the arachidonic acid metabolic pathway was affected by changes in soil microorganisms, and may further affect soil quality in an essential manner. Discussion Planting patterns and management strategies may significantly affect soil microorganisms and therefore metabolites. Changes in soil microorganisms, especially in fungi, may alter soil quality by affecting soil physicochemical properties and metabolites. This study will provide new insights into soil quality monitoring from a microbiological perspective.

Abstract
Understanding the value of ecosystem services is imperative for the welfare of current and future generations. Anxi town is situated within the mountainous terrain of Fujian province, China and characterized by a diverse range of ecosystems encompassing forests, rivers, and mountains. These ecosystems offer a wide range of ecosystem services. The value of ecosystem services has been declining in the county for the past twenty-years. However, limited is known on the spatial changes and factors affecting the value of these Therefore, current study assessed the spatial changes in the value of ecosystem services (provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural) in 24 townships situated in the county for three time periods, i.e., 1999, 2009, and 2019 and factors affecting these services. The results revealed that annual decline in the value of ecosystem services was higher in 1999-2009 than 2009-2019. Longjuan, Xianghua, Gande, Futian, Changkeng, Xiping, Taozhou and Huqiu townships observed the highest annual decline in the value of ecosystem services ranging from 20.1 to 68.1 million yuan. The GWR model indicated that vegetation index had the highest impact on the value of ecosystem services in the county. Overall, the value of ecosystem services was negatively correlated with the urbanization rate and distance from the road with some exceptions, whereas altitude had a positive impact. All townships (except Xianghua, Futian, and Taozhou) had negative values for water supply services. Hence, water supply is a significant ecological issue in the county. It is concluded that tea farmers in the county should be educated about water and soil conservation, investment should be done in conservation measures, regional ecological environments should be protected, and ecological tea planting techniques should be developed in the county to halt further decrease in the value of ecosystem services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pu'er Traditional Tea Agroecosystem is one of the projects included in the United Nations' Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) since 2012. Against the background of having rich biodiversity and a long history of tea culture, the ancient tea trees in Pu'er have experienced from wild-transition-cultivation for thousands of years, and the local people's knowledge about the management of ancient teagardens has not been rigorously recorded. For this reason, it is important to study and record the traditional management knowledge of Pu'er ancient teagardens and the influence on the formation of tea trees and communities. This study focuses on the traditional management knowledge of ancient teagardens in Jingmai Mountains, Pu'er, and monoculture teagardens (monoculture and intensively managed planting base for tea cultivation) were used as the control, through the community structure, composition and biodiversity of ancient teagardens to respond to the influence of traditional management, and this work with a view to providing a reference for further research on the stability and sustainable development of tea agroecosystem. METHODS From 2021 to 2022, information on traditional management of ancient teagardens was obtained through semi-structured interviews with 93 local people in the Jingmai Mountains area of Pu'er. Informed consent was obtained from each participant before conducting the interview process. The communities, tea trees and biodiversity of Jingmai Mountains ancient teagardens (JMATGs) and monoculture teagardens (MTGs) were examined through field surveys, measurements and biodiversity survey methods. The Shannon-Weiner (H), Pielou (E) and Margalef (M) indices were calculated for the biodiversity of the teagardens within the unit sample, using monoculture teagardens as a control. RESULTS The tea tree morphology, community structure and composition of Pu'er ancient teagardens are significantly different from those of monoculture teagardens, and the biodiversity is significantly higher than that of monoculture teagardens. The local people mainly manage the ancient tea trees mainly using several methods, including weeding (96.8%), pruning (48.4%) and pest control (33.3%). The pest control mainly relies on the removal of diseased branches. JMATGs annual gross output is approximately 6.5 times that of MTGs. The traditional management of ancient teagardens is through setting up forest isolation zones as protected areas, planting tea trees in the understory on the sunny side, keeping tea trees 1.5-7 m apart, as well as consciously protecting forest animals such as spiders, birds and bees, and reasonably rearing livestock in the teagardens. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that local people have rich traditional knowledge and experience in the management of ancient teagardens in Pu'er, and that this traditional management knowledge has impacted the growth of ancient tea trees, enriched the structure and composition of tea plantation communities and actively protected the biodiversity within ancient teagardens.

Abstract
Soil acidification in Chinese tea plantations is widespread, and it has significantly affected the growth of tea trees; it was important to explore soil remediation of acidified tea plantations in depth for the sustainable development of tea industry. In this study, the effects of sheep manure fertilizer with different application depths on soil acidification, tea yield and quality, and soil nitrogen transformation in tea plantations were analyzed for five consecutive years from 2018 to 2022. The results showed that long-term use of sheep manure fertilizer significantly reduced soil acidification (P< 0.05) in tea plantations, improved soil pH and soil ammonium nitrogen content, enhanced root activity and root nitrogen uptake capacity of tea trees, and thus improved tea yield and quality. The effect of different application depths of sheep manure fertilizer on tea yield and quality was mainly reflected in the transformation ability of soil ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen, which showed that high transformation ability of soil ammonium nitrogen and high ammonium nitrogen content were beneficial to high tea yield and vice versa, and the best effect was achieved when sheep manure was applied at a depth of 50 cm and 70 cm. The topsis analysis confirmed that sheep manure fertilization had a greater effect on root activity, ammonium nitrogen, ammonia intensity, and nifH gene. This study provided an important practical basis for the restoration of acidified tea plantation soil through sheep manure fertilizer management.

Abstract
Increased availability of toxic Al3+ is the main constraint limiting plant growth on acid soils. Plants adapted to acid soils, however, tolerate toxic Al3+, and some can accumulate Al in their aerial parts to a significant degree. Studies on Al-tolerant and Al-accumulating species have mainly focused on the vegetation of acid soils distributed as two global belts in the northern and southern hemispheres, while acid soils formed outside these regions have been largely neglected. The acid soils (pH 3.4-4.2) of the tea plantations in the south Caspian region of Northern Iran were surveyed over three seasons at two main locations. Aluminum and other mineral elements (including nutrients) were measured in 499 plant specimens representing 86 species from 43 families. Al accumulation exceeding the criterion for accumulator species (>1000 µg g-1 DW) was found in 36 species belonging to 23 families of herbaceous annual or perennial angiosperms, in addition to three bryophyte species. Besides Al, Fe accumulation (1026-5155 µg g-1 DW) was also observed in the accumulator species that exceeded the critical toxicity concentration, whereas no such accumulation was observed for Mn. The majority of analyzed accumulator plants (64%) were cosmopolitan or pluriregional species, with a considerable rate of Euro-Siberian elements (37%). Our findings, which may contribute to phylogenetic studies of Al accumulators, also suggest suitable accumulator and excluder species for the rehabilitation of acid-eroded soils and introduce new model species for investigating Al accumulation and exclusion mechanisms.

Abstract
Glycophyte biomass - derived biochars have proven to be effective in the amelioration of acidic soil. However, there is scarce information on the characteristics and soil amelioration effects of halophyte-derived biochars. In this study, a typical halophyte Salicornia europaea, which is mainly distributed in the saline soils and salt-lake shores of China, and a glycophyte Zea mays, which is widely planted in the north of China, were selected to produce biochars with a pyrolysis process at 500 °C for 2 h. S. europaea-derived and Z. mays-derived biochars were characterized in elemental content, pores, surface area, and surface functional groups, and then by using a pot experiment their potential utilizable value as acidic soil conditioner was evaluated. The results showed that compared with Z. mays-derived biochar, S. europaea-derived biochar displayed higher pH, ash contents, base cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) contents and exhibited more larger surface area and pore volume than Z. mays-derived biochar. Both biochars had abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Upon treating the acidic soil, the pH of acidic soil was increased by 0.98, 2.76, and 3.36 units after the addition of 1%, 2%, and 4% S. europaea-derived biochar, while it was increased only by 0.10, 0.22, and 0.56 units at 1%, 2%, and 4% Z. mays-derived biochar. High alkalinity in S. europaea-derived biochar was the main reason for the increase of pH value and base cations in acidic soil. Thus, application of halophyte biochar such as S. europaea-derived biochar is an alternative method for the amelioration of acidic soils.

Abstract
Currently, the effects of the differences between day and night temperatures (DIFs) on tea plant are poorly understood. In order to investigate the influence of DIFs on the growth, photosynthesis, and metabolite accumulation of tea plants, the plants were cultivated under 5 °C (25/20 °C, light/dark), 10 °C (25/15 °C, light/dark), and 15 °C (25/10 °C, light/dark). The results showed that the growth rate of the new shoots decreased with an increase in the DIFs. There was a downward trend in the photosynthesis among the treatments, as evidenced by the lowest net photosynthetic rate and total chlorophyll at a DIF of 15 °C. In addition, the DIFs significantly affected the primary and secondary metabolites. In particular, the 10 °C DIF treatment contained the lowest levels of soluble sugars, tea polyphenols, and catechins but was abundant in caffeine and amino acids, along with high expression levels of theanine synthetase (TS3) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT). Furthermore, the transcriptome data revealed that the differentially expressed genes were enriched in valine, leucine, and isoleucine degradation, flavone/flavonol biosyntheses, flavonoid biosynthesis, etc. Therefore, we concluded that a DIF of 10 °C was suitable for the protected cultivation of tea plants in terms of the growth and the quality of a favorable flavor of tea, which provided a scientific basis for the protected cultivation of tea seedlings.

Abstract
Vegetation restoration on purple soil (Eutric Leptic Regosols) slopes aiming at reducing soil erosion in the Rainy Zone of Western China has significantly altered soil organic carbon (SOC) storage and distribution. A better understanding of the effects of different vegetation restoration types on SOC dynamics and fractions is critical in devising better policy to protect or enhance SOC stocks to improve soil quality and ecosystem function. In the present study, total, labile, and non-labile organic carbon (TOC, LC, and NLC), and carbon management index (CMI) of Cryptomeria fortunei (CF), mixed C. fortunei and Betula luminifera (MF), Neosinocalamus affinis (NA), and Camellia sinensis (CS) were compared with those of Zea mays field (ZM) on purple soil slopes in the Rainy Zone of Western China in order to develop more effective ways to implement vegetation restoration in the future. Different vegetation restoration types (CF, MF, NA and CS) increased TOC stock by 47.79%-118.31% and NLC stock by 56.61%-129.52% in the 0-50 cm soil layer compared with that of ZM. The direction and magnitude of changes in LC stock and CMI, however, depended strongly on the vegetation restoration type. Compared with ZM, CF had the largest increase of LC stock and CMI, whereas NA had the largest decrease of LC stock and CMI in the 0-50 cm soil layer. The LC:TOC ratio in four reforested species all declined significantly compared with that of ZM (p < 0.01), indicating decreased SOC activity after afforestation. The vegetation type and soil depth together explained more than 90% of the changes of TOC and its fractions in the plantations on purple soil slopes. Our study demonstrates that transforming the ZM into the CS is optimal to achieve the sustainable development goal, whereas transforming the ZM into the NA reduces the SOC activity and availability.

Abstract
Soil acidification in tea plantations leads to an excessive heavy metal content in tea, decreasing its yield and quality. How to apply shellfish and organic fertilizers to improve soil and ensure the safe production of tea is still not clear. A two-year field experiment was conducted in tea plantations in which the soil was characterized by a pH of 4.16 and concentrations of lead (Pb) (85.28 mg/kg) and cadmium (Cd) (0.43 mg/kg) exceeding the standard. We used shellfish amendments (750, 1500, 2250 kg/ha) and organic fertilizers (3750, 7500 kg/ha) to amend the soils. The experimental results showed that compared with the treatment without any amendment (CK), the soil pH increased by 0.46 on average; the soil available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents increased by 21.68%, 19.01%, and 17.51% respectively; and the soil available Pb, Cd, Cr, and As contents decreased by 24.64%, 24.36%, 20.83%, and 26.39%, respectively. In comparison to CK, the average yield of tea also increased by 90.94 kg/ha; tea polyphenols, free amino acids, caffeine, and water extract increased by 9.17%, 15.71%, 7.54%, and 5.27%, respectively; and the contents of Pb, Cd, As, and Cr in the tea decreased significantly (p < 0.05) by 29.44-61.38%, 21.43-61.38%, 10.43-25.22%, and 10.00-33.33%, respectively. The greatest effects on all parameters occurred with the largest amendment of both shellfish (2250 kg/ha) and organic fertilizer (7500 kg/ha) combined. This finding suggests that the optimized amendment of shellfish could be used as a technical measure to improve the health quality of both soil and tea in acidified tea plantations in the future.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is a major nutrition element for tea plant. However, application of high levels of N negatively causes environmental problems. Therefore, improved N use efficiency (NUE) of tea plant will be highly desirable and crucial for sustainable tea cultivation. Autophagy plays a central role in N recycling and holds potential to improve N utilization, and many AuTophaGy-related genes (ATGs) are involved in the autophagy process. Here, CsATG3a was identified from Camellia sinensis, and the functions involved in N utilization was characterized in arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). The transcript level of CsATG3a in tea leaves increases with their maturity. Relative to the wild type (WT) arabidopsis, two CsATG3a-overexpressing (CsATG3a-OE) lines exhibited improved vegetative growth, delayed reproductive stage, and upregulated expression of AtATGs (AtATG3, AtATG5 and AtATG8b) in a low N (LN) hydroponic condition. The expression levels of AtNRT1.1, AtNRT2.1, AtNRT2.2, AtAMT1.1 and AtAMT1.3 for N uptake and transport in roots were all significantly higher in CsATG3a-OE lines compared with those in the WT under LN. Meanwhile, the overexpression of CsATG3a in arabidopsis also increased N and dry matter allocation into both rosette leaves and roots under LN. Additionally, compared with WT, improved HI (harvest index), NHI (N harvest index), NUtE (N utilization efficiency) and NUE (N use efficiency) of CsATG3a-OE lines were further confirmed in a low-N soil cultured experiment. Together, these results concluded that CsATG3a is involved in N recycling and enhances tolerance to LN, indicating that CsATG3a holds potential promise to improve NUE in tea plant.

Abstract
Soil salinization and acidification seriously damage soil health and restricts the sustainable development of planting. Excessive application of chemical fertilizer and other reasons will lead to soil acidification and salinization. This study focus on acid and salinized soil, investigated the effect of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, Aspergillus niger MJ1 combined with nitrogen-fixing bacteria Pseudomonas stutzeri DSM4166 or mutant Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0-nif on crop quality, soil physicochemical properties, and microbial communities. A total of 5 treatments were set: regular fertilization (T1), regular fertilization with MJ1 and DSM4166 (T2), regular fertilization with MJ1 and CHA0-nif (T3), 30%-reducing fertilization with MJ1 and DSM4166 (T4), and 30%-reducing fertilization with MJ1 and CHA0-nif (T5). It was found that the soil properties (OM, HN, TN, AP, AK, and SS) and crop quality of cucumber (yield production, protein, and vitamin C) and lettuce (yield production, vitamin C, nitrate, soluble protein, and crude fiber) showed a significant response to the inoculated strains. The combination of MJ1 with DSM4166 or CHA0-nif influenced the diversity and richness of bacterial community in the lettuce-grown soil. The organismal system-, cellular process-, and metabolism-correlated bacteria and saprophytic fungi were enriched, which were speculated to mediate the response to inoculated strains. pH, OM, HN, and TN were identified to be the major factors correlated with the soil microbial community. The inoculation of MJ1 with DSM4166 and CHA0-nif could meet the requirement of lettuce and cucumber growth after reducing fertilization in acid and salinized soil, which provides a novel candidate for the eco-friendly technique to meet the carbon-neutral topic.

Abstract
In this study, the growth of fungi Trichoderma guizhouense NJAU4742 was significantly inhibited under acid stress, and the genes related to acid stress were identified based on transcriptome analysis. Four genes including tna1, adh2/4, and bna3 were significantly up-regulated. Meanwhile, intracellular hydrogen ions accumulated under acid stress, and ATP synthesis was induced to transport hydrogen ions to maintain hydrogen ion balance. The enhancement of glycolysis pathway was also detected, and a large amount of pyruvic acid from glycolysis was accumulated due to the activity limitation of PDH enzymes. Finally, acetaldehyde accumulated, resulting in the induction of adh2/4. In order to cope with stress caused by acetaldehyde, cells enhanced the synthesis of NAD+ by increasing the expression of tna1 and bna3 genes. NAD+ effectively improved the antioxidant capacity of cells, but the NAD+ supplement pathway mediated by bna3 could also cause the accumulation of kynurenine (KYN), which was an inducer of apoptosis. In addition, KYN had a specific promoting effect on acetaldehyde synthesis by improving the expression of eno2 gene, which led to the extremely high intracellular acetaldehyde in the cell under acidic stress. Our findings provided a route to better understand the response of filamentous fungi under acid stress.

Abstract
Biochar applied to the soil can contribute to the sustainability of agriculture by promoting ecosystem services. Tea production contributes to addressing hunger and poverty in developing countries. However, little is known about the impact of biochar amendment on ecosystem services in tea plantations. We evaluated ecosystem services from an economic assessment perspective to better understand the effects of biochar on ecosystem services and dis-services. We conducted field experiments in two subtropical tea plantations with three treatments: no fertilizer and compound fertilizers applied without and with biochar. Results showed that biochar increased the net ecosystem carbon budget by 17-fold through direct carbon addition, thus increasing regulating services. Compared to compound fertilizer alone, biochar application reduced total reactive nitrogen loss by an average of 1.8 % due to an average reduction of 16.2 % and 21.5 % in nitrous oxide and nitric oxide emissions, respectively. However, the high cost of biochar, the low environmental benefits due to the low carbon price, and the fact that biochar did not provide additional economic profit made the net ecosystem economic benefits unsatisfactory. For comparison, we set up an optimistic scenario based on the increased carbon price ($160/ton CO2-equivalent) and the documented effects of biochar on yield (+9.6 %), nitrogen leaching/runoff (-24 %), and ammonia volatilization (+14 %). The scenario analysis showed that increased yields and higher carbon prices could contribute to the increase in net ecosystem economic benefits. Taken together, our findings suggest that the impact of biochar on yield benefits is the key to biochar application and that a market-regulated carbon price accompanied by appropriate ecological compensation is necessary to effectively promote biochar application by farmers.

Abstract
A field study was conducted from 0 to 360 days to investigate the effect of tea pruning litter biochar (TPLBC) on the accumulation of major micronutrients (copper: Cu, manganese: Mn, and zinc: Zn) in soil, their uptake by tea plant (clone: S.3 A/3) and level of contamination in soil due to TPLBC. To evaluate the level of contamination due to TPLBC, a soil pollution assessment was carried out using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), potential ecological risk factor (PERF), individual contamination factor (ICF), and risk assessment code (RAC). The total content of Cu, Mn, and Zn gradually increased with increasing doses of TPLBC at 0D, and then decreased with time. The fractionation of the three micronutrients in soil changed after the application of TPLBC. The contamination risk assessment of soil for Cu, Mn, and Zn based on the Igeo, EF, CF, PERF,ICF, and RAC suggested that the application of TPLBC does not have any adverse effect on soil. Except for Mn, the bioconcentration and translocation factors were less than one for Cu and Zn. Results from this study revealed that the application of 400 kg TPLBC ha-1 is significantly better than the other treatments for Cu, Mn, and Zn at a 5% level of significance.

Abstract
In this study, sheep manure fertilizers with different dosages were used for five consecutive years to treat acidified tea plantation soils, and the effects of sheep manure fertilizer on soil pH value, nitrogen transformation, and tea yield and quality were analyzed. The results showed that soil pH value showed an increasing trend after a continuous use of sheep manure fertilizer from 2018 to 2022. After the use of low dosage of sheep manure fertilizer (6 t/hm2-15 t/hm2), tea yield, the content of tea quality indicators (tea polyphenols, theanine, amino acid, and caffeine) and soil ammonium nitrogen content, ammoniating bacteria number, ammoniating intensity, urease activity and protease activity showed increasing trends and were significantly and positively correlated to soil pH value, while the related indexes showed increasing and then decreasing trends after the use of high dosage of sheep manure fertilizer (18 t/hm2). Secondly, the nitrate nitrogen content, nitrifying bacteria number, nitrifying intensity, nitrate reductase activity, and nitrite reductase activity showed decreasing trends after the use of low dosage of sheep manure fertilizer and showed significant negative correlations with soil pH value, while the related indexes showed decreasing trends after the use of high dosage of sheep manure and then increased. The results of principal component and interaction analysis showed that the effects of sheep manure fertilizers with different dosages on tea yield and quality were mainly based on the transformation ability of ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen in the soil, and the strong transformation ability of ammonium nitrogen and the high ammonium nitrogen content in the soil were conducive to the improvement of tea yield and quality, and vice versa. The results of topsis comprehensive evaluation and analysis showed that the most influential effect on the fertilization effect was the ammonium nitrogen content in the soil and long-term treatment with 15 t/hm2 of sheep manure fertilizer had the highest proximity to the best fertilization effect. This study provided an important practical basis for the remediation and fertilizer management in acidified tea plantation soils.

Abstract
Soil acidification in tea plantation seriously reduced the yield and quality of tea. It was an effective method to use organic fertilizer for acidified soil remediation to ensure tea yield and quality. In this study, different fertilizers were used to treat the acidified tea plantation soils for 4 consecutive years to analyze the remediation effect of different fertilizers on acidified soil and their effects on tea yield and quality. The results showed that during the period of 2017-2021, the soil pH value of tea plantation (S1) with long-term use of chemical fertilizer decreased continuously, from 3.07 to 2.82. In the tea plantation (S2), the soil pH value was stable between 4.26 and 4.65 in the combination of organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer for a long time. The tea plantation (S3) with long-term use of organic fertilizer has a stable soil pH value between 5.13 and 5.33, which is most suitable for the growth of tea trees. The analysis results of tea yield and quality indicators (tea polyphenols, theanine, amino acids, caffeine, catechin components) showed that after long-term use of chemical fertilizer in S1 tea plantation, soil pH value decreased continuously, soil acidification intensified, tea tree growth was hindered, and tea yield and quality decreased continuously. S2 tea plantation used some organic fertilizer in combination with chemical fertilizer for a long time, the soil pH value gradually improved, soil acidification weakened, and tea yield and quality improved steadily. After long-term use of organic fertilizer in S3 tea plantation, soil acidification was significantly improved, which was conducive to the normal growth of tea trees and the yield and quality of tea reached the maximum. The results of interaction analysis showed that the long-term use of chemical fertilizer had a negative effect on the growth of tea trees, and the combination of organic fertilizer and chemical fertilizer improved the growth of tea trees to some extent, but the effect was poor, while the long-term use of organic fertilizer was the most beneficial to the growth of tea trees and most conducive to ensuring the yield and quality of tea. This study provides important practical significance for the remediation and fertilizer regulation of acidified tea plantation soils. In the process of field experiment, climate is a variable factor, and attention should be paid to the effect of climate change on fertilization efficiency in subsequent experiment.

Abstract
The rampant bayberry decline disease has been regarded as related to soil with the long-term plantation bayberry. These parameters, hydrogen, aluminum, other alkali cations, and plant-related nutrients, were measured from the soil around diseased tree roots 10, 20, and 30 years old. The pH significantly declined in topsoil with increasing tree age and rose with increasing depth of the soil layer with an age of 10, 20, and 30 years. The concentration of exchangeable aluminum has risen significantly with the increase of the tree ages in the top soil layer and also in 0 to 40 cm soils layer with ten-year-old trees. In the top soil layer with a depth of 0 to 10 cm, the cation concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+ has fallen significantly with the increase of tree ages. A higher concentration of exchangeable aluminum was observed in the soil with trees more seriously affected by the disease and was accompanied with lower concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+. The correlation analysis showed that the soil pH is significantly positively related to the concentration of exchangeable Ca2+, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus and negatively to exchangeable aluminum. These findings provided a new insight to mitigate the disease by regulating the soil parameters.

Abstract
The positive aspects of the tea plant/legume intercropping system draw attention to the Chinese tea industry for its benefit for soil fertility improvement with low fertilizer input. However, limited information exists as to the roles of intercropped legumes in the rhizosphere microbiome and tea quality. Hereby, soybean was selected as the intercropped plant to investigate its effect on bacterial communities, nutrient competition, tea plant development, and tea quality. Our data showed that intercropped soybean boosted the uptake of nitrogen in tea plants and enhanced the growth of young tea shoots. Nutrient competition for phosphorus and potassium in soil existed between soybeans and tea plants. Moreover, tea/soybean intercropping improved tea quality, manifested by a significantly increased content of non-ester type catechins (C, EGC, EC), total catechins and theanine, and decreased content of ester type catechins (EGCG). Significant differences in rhizobacterial composition were also observed under different systems. At the genus level, the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Bradyrhizobium, Saccharimonadales and Mycobacterium, was significantly increased with the intercropping system, while the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria, Pseudogulbenkiania, was markedly decreased. Correlation analysis showed that Pseudogulbenkiania, SBR1031, and Burkholderiaceae clustered together showing a similar correlation with soil physicochemical and tea quality characteristics; however, other differential bacteria showed the opposite pattern. In conclusion, tea/soybean intercropping improves tea quality and nutrition uptake by increasing the relative abundance of beneficial rhizosphere bacteria and decreasing denitrifying bacteria. This study strengthens our understanding of how intercropping system regulate the soil bacterial community to maintain the health of soils in tea plantations and provides the basis for replacing chemical fertilizers and improving the ecosystem in tea plantations.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is the first essential nutrient for tea growth. However, the effect of soil acidification on soil N cycle and N forms in tea plantation are unclear. In this study, the nitrogen contents, soil enzyme activity and N mineralization rate in acidified soil of tea plantation were measured. Moreover, the effects of soil acidification on N cycling functional genes and functional microorganisms were explored by soil metagenomics. The results showed that the NH4 +-N, available N and net N mineralization rate in the acidified tea soil decreased significantly, while the NO3 --N content increased significantly. The activities of sucrase, protease, catalase and polyphenol oxidase in the acidified tea soil decreased significantly. The abundance of genes related to ammonification, dissimilatory N reduction, nitrification and denitrification pathway in the acidified tea soil increased significantly, but the abundance of functional genes related to glutamate synthesis and assimilatory N reduction pathway were opposite. In addition, the abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Nitrospirae, Actinomadura, Nitrospira etc. microorganisms related to nitrification, denitrification and pathogenic effect increased significantly in the acidified tea soil. The correlation results showed that soil pH and N forms were correlated with soil enzyme activity, N cycling function genes and microbial changes. In conclusion, soil acidification results in significant changes in enzyme activity, gene abundance and microorganism involved in various N cycle processes in acidified tea soil, which leads to imbalance of soil N form ratio and is not conducive to N transformation and absorption of tea trees.

Abstract
Recent decades have witnessed increased agricultural production to match the global demand for food fueled by population increase. Conventional agricultural practices are heavily reliant on artificial fertilizers that have numerous human and environmental health effects. Cognizant of this, sustainability researchers and environmentalists have increased their focus on other crop fertilization mechanisms. Biofertilizers are microbial formulations constituted of indigenous plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that directly or indirectly promote plant growth through the solubilization of soil nutrients, and the production of plant growth-stimulating hormones and iron-sequestering metabolites called siderophores. Biofertilizers have continually been studied, recommended, and even successfully adopted for the production of many crops in the world. These microbial products hold massive potential as sustainable crop production tools, especially in the wake of climate change that is partly fueled by artificial fertilizers. Despite the growing interest in the technology, its full potential has not yet been achieved and utilization still seems to be in infancy. There is a need to shed light on the past, current, and future prospects of biofertilizers to increase their understanding and utility. This review evaluates the history of PGPR biofertilizers, assesses their present utilization, and critically advocates their future in sustainable crop production. It, therefore, updates our understanding of the evolution of PGPR biofertilizers in crop production. Such information can facilitate the evaluation of their potential and ultimately pave the way for increased exploitation.

Abstract
Tea plantation can cause strong soil degradation, e.g. acidification, basic nutrient decrease and microbial diversity loss, naturally by its root activity and secondary by practically tremendous synthetic N input. Organic amendments application is considered a practical way to mitigate the above adverse consequence. However, the trade-off between agronomic and environmental effects on the application of the organic amendments is still under debate. Herein, we conducted a long-term field experiment with four treatments, including control (without and fertiliser) (CK), chemical fertiliser treatment (CF), chicken manure treatment (CM) and chicken manure combined with biochar treatment (CMB) to investigate the effects of organic amendments application on soil quality, heavy metal contamination and tea production in a tea plantation. Totally 16 plots were arranged randomly with a completely randomised design. The results showed that CM and CMB treatments improved soil nutrient, mitigated soil acidification and ameliorated soil porosity compared to CF treatment. CMB treatment displayed a relatively high tea yield and quality in three consecutive years of monitoring. However, CM and CMB treatments elevated the heavy metal (HM) potential ecological risk (RI) and Nemerow's composite index (Ps). CM treatment significantly increased available As, Pb, Cu and Zn concentrations compared to CF treatment, while CMB treatment significantly decreased available Cr and Cu concentrations and slightly decreased available Cd, Pb and Ni concentrations compared to CM treatment. But the increase of available As and Zn in CMB treatment compared to CM treatment also indicated adverse effects of biochar addition. The PLS-PM model showed HM risk had direct negative effects on tea quality. Moreover, soil fungal community revealed positive effects on tea yield and negative effects on tea quality. Overall, our study proved that CMB treatment could improve soil quality, reduce available Cr and Ni concentrations, maintain tea yield and increase tea quality.

Abstract
The soil microbial community is a key indicator to evaluate the soil health and productivities in agricultural ecosystems. Monoculture and conversions of forests to tea plantations have been widely applied in tea plantation globally, but long-term monoculture of tea plantation could lead to soil degradation and yield decline. Understanding how long-term monoculture systems influence the soil health and ecosystem functions in tea plantation is of great importance for soil environment management. In this study, through the comparison of three independent tea plantations across eastern China composed of varying stand ages (from 3 to 90 years after conversion from forest), we found that long-term tea monoculture led to significant increases in soil total organic carbon (TOC) and microbial nitrogen (MBN). Additionally, the structure, function, and co-occurrence network of soil bacterial communities were investigated by pyrosequencing 16S rRNA genes. The pyrosequencing analysis revealed that the structures and functions of soil bacterial communities were significantly affected by different stand ages, but sampling sites and land-use conversion (from forest to tea plantation) had stronger effects than stand age on the diversity and structure of soil bacterial communities. Soil bacterial diversity can be improved with increasing stand ages in tea plantation. Further RDA analysis revealed that the C and N availability improvement in tea plantation soils led to the variation of structure and function in soil bacterial communities. Moreover, co-occurrence network analysis of soil bacterial communities also demonstrated that interactions among soil bacteria taxa were strengthened with increasing stand age. Our findings suggest that long-term monoculture with proper managements could be beneficial to soil ecosystems by increasing the C and N content and strengthening bacterial associations in tea plantations. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the impact of land-use change and long-term monoculture stand age on soil environments in tea plantation.

Tea Cultivation Suitability Evaluation and Driving Force Analysis Based on AHP and Geodetector Results: A Case Study of Yingde in Guangdong, China. REMOTE SENSING 2022. Abstract
Tea is an economically important crop. Evaluating the suitability of tea can better optimize the regional layout of the tea industry and provide a scientific basis for tea planting plans, which is also conducive to the sustainable development of the tea industry in the long run. Driving force analysis can be carried out to better understand the main influencing factors of tea growth. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of tea planting in the study area, determine the prioritization of tea industry development in this area, and provide support for the government’s planning and decision making. This study used Sentinel image data to obtain the current land use data of the study area. The results show that the accuracy of tea plantation classification based on Sentinel images reached 86%, and the total accuracy reached 92%. Then, we selected 14 factors, including climate, soil, terrain, and human-related factors, using the analytic hierarchy process and spatial analysis technology to evaluate the suitability of tea cultivation in the study area and obtain a comprehensive potential distribution map of tea cultivation. The results show that the moderately suitable area (36.81%) accounted for the largest proportion of the tea plantation suitability evaluation, followed by the generally suitable area (31.40%), the highly suitable area (16.91%), and the unsuitable area (16.23%). Among these areas, the highly suitable area is in line with the distribution of tea cultivation at the Yingde municipal level. Finally, to better analyze the contribution of each factor to the suitability of tea, the factors were quantitatively evaluated by the Geodetector model. The most important factors affecting the tea cultivation suitability evaluation were temperature (0.492), precipitation (0.367), slope (0.302), and elevation (0.255). Natural factors influence the evaluation of the suitability of tea cultivation, and the influence of human factors is relatively minor. This study provides an important scientific basis for tea yield policy formulation, tea plantation site selection, and adaptation measures.

Abstract
Soil acidification is a global environmental issue that decreases soil functions, and it has been significantly accelerated by anthropogenic activities in recent decades. Soils can resist acidification upon receiving acid inputs due to the resistance or/and resilience capacity of soils, which is termed the acid buffering capacity of soils, and it is often indicated by the soil pH buffering capacity (pHBC). An increasing number of studies have been conducted to quantify soil pHBC at various sites, but to date, integration of global data is lacking; therefore, the variations in large-scale soil pHBC and the factors that influence these variations are still unclear. In this study, we collected previously published data on soil pHBC to analyze its variations on a large scale, as well as investigate the underlying factors influencing these variations. The results showed that soil pHBC varied substantially from site to site, with a mean of 51.07 ± 50.11 mmol kg−1 pH−1. Soil texture and pH, separately or collectively, explained a considerable proportion of the total variation of global soil pHBC. It is well-established that a series of processes contribute to the soil acid buffering capacity in different pH ranges, and the global data analyses showed that pH 5.5 could be a key threshold value; different buffering systems may be active at pH > 5.5 and pH < 5.5. Moreover, tropical soils were more acid-sensitive than temperate and subtropical soils, and forest soils had significantly lower soil pHBCs than grassland and cropland soils. This could be attributed in part to the different soil properties, such as soil texture or pH, among the different climatic zones and ecosystems.

Abstract
Climate change leads to more serious drying-rewetting alternation disturbance, which furtherly affects soil ecosystem function and agriculture production. Intercropping green manure, as an ancient agricultural practice, can improve the physical, chemical, and biological fertility of soil in tea plantation. However, the effects of intercropping green manure on soil multifunctional resistance to drying-rewetting disturbance in tea plantation has not been reported. In this study, the effects of different green manure practices over four years (tea plant monoculture, tea plant and soybean intercropping, tea plant and soybean + milk vetch intercropping) on soil multifunctionality resistance to drying-rewetting cycles, and the pivotal influencing factors were investigated. We used quantitative PCR array and analysis of multiple enzyme activities to characterize the abundance of functional genes and ecosystem multifunctionality, respectively. Compared with tea plantation monoculture, tea plant intercropping soybean and soybean + milk vetch significantly increased multifunctionality resistance by 12.07% and 25.86%, respectively. Random forest analysis indicated that rather than the diversity, the abundance of functional genes was the major drive of multifunctionality resistance. The structure equation model further proved that tea plantation intercropping green manure could improve the abundance of C cycling related functional genes mediated by soil properties, and ultimately increased multifunctionality resistance to drying-rewetting disturbance. Therefore, tea plantation intercropping green manure is an effective approach to maintain the multifunctionality resistance, which is conducive to maintain the soil nutrient supply capacity and tea production under the disturbance of drying-rewetting alternation.

Abstract
Biochar application in the agriculture sector is a practical approach to minimize waste and maintain sustainable farming. However, the information regarding biochar application in tea cultivation is limited and especially rare in field research. In this study, a two-year biochar experiment was conducted in a tea yard subject to tea yield and soil characteristics. According to tea growth, the tea yard for the experiment was divided into weak and normal sectors. Biochar was made from tea processing waste, mainly the twigs. The results showed that biochar application increased tea production by 2.3- and 1.3-fold in the weak and normal sectors, respectively, suggesting that converting tea waste to biochar for soil amendment is beneficial to increasing tea production, particularly in the weak sector. The regression analysis on tea production and soil characteristics revealed that only soil electric conductivity (R2 = 0.6597), soil organic matter (R2 = 0.7024), and soil extractable phosphate (R2 = 0.6547) were positively correlated with tea yield. Therefore, the field experiment of this study improves the understanding of biochar’s agronomic and environmental benefits on plant productivity and soil health.

Abstract
Magnesium (Mg) plays important roles in photosynthesis, sucrose partitioning, and biomass allocation in plants. However, the specific mechanisms of tea plant response to Mg deficiency remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of Mg deficiency on the quality constituents of tea leaves. Our results showed that the short-term (7 days) Mg deficiency partially elevated the concentrations of polyphenols, free amino acids, and caffeine but decreased the contents of chlorophyll and Mg. However, long-term (30 days) Mg-deficient tea displayed decreased contents of these constituents. Particularly, Mg deficiency increased the index of catechins' bitter taste and the ratio of total polyphenols to total free amino acids. Moreover, the transcription of key genes involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoid, caffeine, and theanine was differentially affected by Mg deficiency. Additionally, short-term Mg deficiency induced global transcriptome change in tea leaves, in which a total of 2522 differentially expressed genes were identified involved in secondary metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and chlorophyll metabolism. These results may help to elucidate why short-term Mg deficiency partially improves the quality constituents of tea, while long-term Mg-deficient tea may taste more bitter, more astringent, and less umami.

Abstract
There is a special interaction between the environment, soil microorganisms, and tea plants, which constitute the ecosystem of tea plantations. Influenced by environmental factors and human management, the changes in soil microbial community affected the growth, quality, and yield of tea plants. However, little is known about the composition and structure of soil bacterial and fungal communities in 100-year-old tea plantations and the mechanisms by which they are affected. In this regard, we characterized the microbiome of tea plantation soils by considering the bacterial and fungal communities in 448 soil samples from 101 ancient tea plantations in eight counties of Lincang city, which is one of the tea domestication centers in the world. 16S and Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) rRNA high-throughput amplicon sequencing techniques were applied in this study. The results showed that the abundance, diversity, and composition of the bacterial and fungal communities have different sensitivity with varying pH, altitude, and latitude. pH and altitude affect soil microbial communities, and bacterial communities are more sensitive than fungi in terms of abundance and diversity to pH. The highest α-diversity of bacterial communities is shown in the pH 4.50–5.00 and 2,200-m group, and fungi peaked in the pH 5.00–5.50 and 900-m group. Because of environmental and geographical factors, all microbes are similarly changing, and further correlations showed that the composition and structure of bacterial communities are more sensitive than fungal communities, which were affected by latitude and altitude. In conclusion, the interference of anthropogenic activities plays a more important role in governing fungal community selection than environmental or geographical factors, whereas for the bacterial community, it is more selective to environment adaptation than to adaptation to human activities.

Abstract
Conventional agriculture relies heavily on chemical pesticides and fertilizers to control plant pests and diseases and improve production. Nevertheless, the intensive and prolonged use of agrochemicals may have undesirable consequences on the structure, diversity, and activities of soil microbiomes, including the beneficial plant rhizobacteria in agricultural systems. Although literature continues to mount regarding the effects of these chemicals on the beneficial plant rhizobacteria in agricultural systems, our understanding of them is still limited, and a proper account is required. With the renewed efforts and focus on agricultural and environmental sustainability, understanding the effects of different agrochemicals on the beneficial plant rhizobacteria in agricultural systems is both urgent and important to deduce practical solutions towards agricultural sustainability. This review critically evaluates the effects of various agrochemicals on the structure, diversity, and functions of the beneficial plant rhizobacteria in agricultural systems and propounds on the prospects and general solutions that can be considered to realize sustainable agricultural systems. This can be useful in understanding the anthropogenic effects of common and constantly applied agrochemicals on symbiotic systems in agricultural soils and shed light on the need for more environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract
To explore the spatial heterogeneity of pH and cadmium (Cd) content in the soils of the tea gardens in the plateau mountain regions as well as its driving factors, the pH values, Cd content and other physical and chemical indicators from 423 soil samples were examined. A coefficient of variation method and a semivariance function model was adopted to explore the soils' spatial heterogeneity, and a random forest approach was applied to evaluate the factors influencing environmental Cd under different pH values. The results show that the pH values of the soils of the tea gardens in the plateau mountain regions were within the appropriate range for the growth of tea plants, and soil samples with pH values falling between 4.5 and 6.0 account for 74% of all samples. A comparison against the criteria of risk screening values for the contamination of agricultural land, a component of quantifying soil environmental quality in China, was preformed; it was determined that the content of heavy metal Cd in the soil of the tea gardens did not exceed the limit. The content of soil pH in the research area gradually declined from southwest to northeast, exhibiting two distinct parallel distribution zones running along the southwest-northeast direction. The spatial distribution of the heavy metal Cd content in the soil showed a gradually decreasing trend from north to south, with low-value polygons dominantly appearing in the southeasternmost area and high-value polygons concentrated in the north. When the soil pH ≤ 5.5, it had the largest effect on the Cd content; when 5.5 < pH ≤ 6.5, the physical indicators in soil had a relatively larger impact on the Cd content.

Abstract
Planting soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) in tea gardens decreased soil pH in theory but increased it in practice. This controversy was addressed in this study by treating the tea garden soil consecutively with different parts of a soybean cover crop: aboveground soybean (ASB) parts, underground soybean (USB) root residues, and the whole soybean (WSB) plants. In comparison with the control, the soil pH increased significantly after the third ASB and WSB treatments, but there was no significant change in the soil pH in the USB treatment. Concordantly, the soil exchangeable acidity decreased significantly and the soil exchangeable bases increased significantly in the ASB and WSB treatments. The exchangeable acidity increased in the USB treatment, but the amount of the increased acidity was less than that of the increased bases in the ASB treatment, resulting in a net increase in the exchangeable bases in the WSB treatment. Soybean planting and covering also increased the microbial richness and abundance significantly, which led to significantly more soil organic matters. Exchangeable K+ and Mg2+, and soil organic matters played significantly positive roles and exchangeable Al3+ played negative roles in improving soil pH. Our data suggest that consecutive plantings of soybean cover crop increase the pH of the acidified tea garden soil.

Abstract
Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) inputs to farmland via fertilizer application are potential sources of C and N that influence soil acidification and water eutrophication. A pilot study was conducted to compare the effects of compound fertilizer and rapeseed cake organic fertilizer on C and N preservation in the soils and runoff of a tea plantation as well as the C and N isotopic fractionation in soils over the three annual cycles of fertilization and tea-leaf harvest. Overall, rapeseed cake organic fertilization effectively increased the pH, total organic matter, NH4-N and NO3-N in soils by 2.19-4.29%, 8.04-21.14%, 53.65-100.32% and 5.74-54.08%, respectively, but decreased NH4-N inputs in runoff by 10.36-25.12% and NO3-N inputs in runoff by 8.94-24.10% relative to the same rate of pure N in compound fertilizer. Before fertilization in February, the average δ13C and δ15N were -25.15‰ and 1.88‰, while after a full year of fertilization and tea-leaf harvesting in October, the average soil δ13C and δ15N contents were -23.83‰ and -0.33‰ after compound fertilization and -26.22‰ and 1.64‰ after rapeseed cake organic fertilization, respectively, indicating the evident effects of fertilization on the isotopic fractionation in soil. In addition, the fractionation extent was positively associated with the fertilization rates under both fertilizers. However, the two fertilization types had different effects on the C and N isotope fractionations, with rapeseed cake organic fertilization contributing more to δ13C (21.07-81.80%) but less to δ15N (18.20-78.93%) and compound fertilization presenting the opposite results (1.88-46.18% and 53.82-98.12%, respectively). This study demonstrates that rapeseed cake organic fertilization can better preserve soil C and N pools while reducing their runoff in tea plantations, which may greatly hinder the regional soil acidification and water eutrophication trends.

Abstract
Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) plants have an optimal pH range of 4.5-6.0, and prefer ammonium (NH4+) over nitrate (NO3-); strong soil acidification and nitrification are thus detrimental to their growth. Application of NH4+-based fertilizers can enhance nitrification and produce H+ that can inhibit nitrification. However, how soil acidification and nitrification are interactively affected by different NH4+-based fertilizers in tea plantations remains unclear. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the application of different forms and rates of NH4+-based fertilizers on pH, net nitrification rates, and N2O and NO emissions in an acidic tea plantation soil. We conducted a 35-day aerobic incubation experiment using ammonium sulphate, urea and ammonium bicarbonate applied at 0, 100 or 200 mg N kg-1 soil. Urea and ammonium bicarbonate significantly increased both soil pH and net nitrification rates, while ammonium sulphate did not affect soil pH but reduced net nitrification rates mainly due to the acidic nature of the fertilizer. We found that the effect of different NH4+-based nitrogen on soil nitrification depended on the impact of the fertilizers on soil pH, and nitrification played an important role in NO emissions, but not in N2O emissions. Overall, urea and ammonium bicarbonate application decoupled crop N preference and the form of N available in spite of increasing soil pH. We thus recommend the co-application of urease and nitrification inhibitors when urea is used as a fertilizer and nitrification inhibitors when ammonium bicarbonate is used as a fertilizer in tea plantations.
