Response of dominant plant species to periodic flooding in the riparian zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), China

UAV-based modelling of vegetation recovery under extreme habitat stresses in the water level fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Impoundment of the Three Gorges Reservoir on the upper Yangtze River has remarkably altered hydrological regime within the dammed reaches, triggering structural and functional changes of the riparian ecosystem. Up to date, how vegetation recovers in response to compound habitat stresses in the water level fluctuation zone remains inexplicitly understood. In this study, plant above-ground biomass (AGB) in a selected water level fluctuation zone was quantified to depict its spatial and temporal pattern using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-derived multispectral images and screened empirical models. The contributions of multiple habitat stressors in governing vegetation recovery dynamics along the environmental gradient were further explored. Screened random forest models indicated relatively higher accuracy in AGB estimation, with R2 being 0.68, 0.79 and 0.62 during the sprouting, growth, and mature periods, respectively. AGB displayed a significant linear increasing trend along the elevational gradient during the sprouting and early growth period, while it showed an inverted U-shaped pattern during late growth and mature period. Flooding duration, magnitude and timing were found to exert greater negative effects on plant sprouting and biomass accumulation and acted as decisive factors in governing the elevation-dependent pattern of AGB. Localized spatial variations in AGB were modulated by other stressors such as sediment burial, soil erosion, soil moisture and nutrient content. Occurrence of episodic summer floods and vegetation distribution were responsible for an inverted U-shaped pattern of AGB during the late growth and mature period. Generally, AGB reached its peak in August, thereafter an obvious decline by an unprecedent dry-hot climatic event. The water level fluctuations with cumulative flooding effects exerted substantial control on AGB temporal dynamics, while climatic condition played a secondary role. Herein, further restorative efforts need to be directed to screening suitable species, maintaining favorable soil condition, and improving vegetation pattern to balance the many trade-offs.

Assessing leaf physiological traits in response to flooding among dominant riparian herbs along the Three Gorges Dam in China

Dams worldwide have significantly altered the composition of riparian forests. However, research on the functional traits of dominant herbs experiencing flooding stress due to dam impoundment remains limited. Given the high plasticity of leaf traits and their susceptibility to environmental influences, this study focuses on riparian herbs along the Three Gorges Hydro-Fluctuation Zone (TGHFZ). Specifically, it investigates how six leaf physiological traits of leading herbs-carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and their stoichiometric ratios-adapt to periodic flooding in the TGHFZ using cluster analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple comparisons, Pearson correlation analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA). We categorized 25 dominant herb species into three plant functional types (PFTs), noting that species from the same family tended to fall into the same PFT. Notably, leaf carbon content (LCC) exhibited no significant differences across various PFTs or altitudes. Within riparian forests, different PFTs employ distinct adaptation strategies: PFT-I herbs invest in structural components to enhance stress resistance; PFT-II, mostly comprising gramineous plants, responds to prolonged flooding by rapid growth above the water; and PFT-III, encompassing nearly all Compositae and annual plants, responds to prolonged flooding with vigorous rhizome growth and seed production. Soil water content (SWC) emerges as the primary environmental factor influencing dominant herb growth in the TGHFZ. By studying the response of leaf physiological traits in dominant plants to artificial flooding, we intend to reveal the survival mechanisms of plants under adverse conditions and lay the foundation for vegetation restoration in the TGHFZ.

Zonation of bulk and rhizosphere soil bacterial communities and their covariation patterns along the elevation gradient in riparian zones of three Gorges reservoir, China

Zonation is a typical pattern of soil distribution and species assembly across riparian habitats. Microorganisms are essential members of riparian ecosystems and whether soil microbial communities demonstrate similar zonation patterns and how bulk and rhizosphere soil microorganisms interact along the elevation (submergence stress) gradient remain largely unknown. In this study, bulk and rhizosphere (dominant plant) soil samples were collected and investigated across riparian zones where the submergence stress intensity increased as the elevation decreased. Results showed that the richness of bacterial communities in bulk and rhizosphere soil samples was significantly different and presented a zonation pattern along with the submergence stress gradient. Bulk soil at medium elevation that underwent moderate submergence stress had the most abundant bacterial communities, while the species richness of rhizobacteria at low elevation that experienced serious submergence stress was the highest. Additionally, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and significance tests showed that bulk and rhizosphere soil samples were distinguished according to the structure of bacterial communities, and so were bulk or rhizosphere soil samples from different elevations. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Mantel test suggested that bacterial communities of bulk soil mainly relied on the contents of soil organic matter, total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg). Contrastingly, the contents of Na and Mg were the main factors explaining the variation in rhizobacterial community composition. Correlation and microbial source tracking analyses showed thatthe relationship of bulk and rhizosphere soil bacteria became much stronger, and the rhizosphere soil may get more bacterial communities from bulk soil with the increase in submergence severity. Our results suggest that the abiotic and biotic components of the riparian ecosystem are closely covariant along the submergence stress gradient and imply that the bacterial community may be a key node linking soil physiochemical properties and vegetation communities.

Deciphering Physio-Biochemical Basis of Tolerance Mechanism for Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) Genotypes under Waterlogging Stress at Early Vegetative Stage

Waterlogging represents a substantial agricultural concern, inducing harmful impacts on crop development and productivity. In the present study, 142 diverse sesame genotypes were examined during the early vegetative phase to assess their response under waterlogging conditions. Based on the severity of symptoms observed, 2 genotypes were classified as highly tolerant, 66 as moderately tolerant, 69 as susceptible, and 5 as highly susceptible. Subsequent investigation focused on four genotypes, i.e., two highly tolerant (JLT-8 and GP-70) and two highly susceptible (R-III-F6 and EC-335003). These genotypes were subjected to incremental stress periods (0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 96 h) to elucidate the biochemical basis of tolerance mechanisms. Each experiment was conducted as a randomized split-plot design with three replications, and the statistical significance of the treatment differences was determined using the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Fisher least significant difference (LSD) test at p ≤ 0.05. The influence of waterlogging stress on morphological growth was detrimental for both tolerant and susceptible genotypes, with more severe consequences observed in the latter. Although adventitious roots were observed in both sets of genotypes above flooding levels, the tolerant genotypes exhibited a more rapid and vigorous development of these roots after 48 h of stress exposure. Tolerant genotypes displayed higher tolerance coefficients compared to susceptible genotypes. Furthermore, tolerant genotypes maintained elevated antioxidant potential, thereby minimizing oxidative stress. Conversely, susceptible genotypes exhibited higher accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde content. Photosynthetic efficiency was reduced in all genotypes after 24 h of stress treatment, with a particularly drastic reduction in susceptible genotypes compared to their tolerant counterparts. Tolerant genotypes exhibited significantly higher activities of anaerobic metabolism enzymes, enabling prolonged survival under waterlogging conditions. Increase in proline content was observed in all the genotypes indicating the cellular osmotic balance adjustments in response to stress exposure. Consequently, the robust antioxidant potential and efficient anaerobic metabolism observed in the tolerant genotypes served as key mechanisms enabling their resilience to short-term waterlogging exposure. These findings underscore the promising potential of specific sesame genotypes in enhancing crop resilience against waterlogging stress, offering valuable insights for agricultural practices and breeding programs.

Dam inundation duration as a dominant constraint on riparian vegetation recovery

The identification of limiting factors is essential for the ecological restoration of riparian ecosystems degraded by the damming of rivers, but remains unclear. Here, we quantitatively assessed the relative importance of environmental factors and revealed the main limiting factors for riparian vegetation restoration and their influencing mechanisms, using riparian plant and environmental data of seven large reservoirs in southwest China. We found that inundation duration had a significantly greater effect on riparian vegetation distribution, cover and diversity than environmental factors such as inundation depth, rainfall, humidity, temperature, sunshine hours, aspect, slope, surface relief, soil pH, available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK); vegetation cover, species richness, complexity and dominance were highly significantly negatively correlated with inundation duration (p < 0.01); inundation for 5 months is close to the tolerance limit of most plants and poses a significant limiting effect on the vegetation restoration in the reservoir riparian. Therefore, the inundation duration should be highlighted in riparian vegetation restoration. Meanwhile, incorporating the riparian inundation into the river ecological scheduling objectives to shorten the inundation duration and thus radically alleviate the limitation is a new opportunity for vegetation restoration in the reservoir riparian.

Dynamic characteristics and functional analysis provide new insights into the role of GauERF105 for resistance against Verticillium dahliae in cotton

BACKGROUND

The cotton industry suffers significant yield losses annually due to Verticillium wilt, which is considered the most destructive disease affecting the crop. However, the precise mechanisms behind this disease in cotton remain largely unexplored.

METHODS

Our approach involved utilizing transcriptome data from G. australe which was exposed to Verticillium dahliae infection. From this data, we identified ethylene-responsive factors and further investigated their potential role in resistance through functional validations via Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) in cotton and overexpression in Arabidopsis.

RESULTS

A total of 23 ethylene response factors (ERFs) were identified and their expression was analyzed at different time intervals (24 h, 48 h, and 72 h post-inoculation). Among them, GauERF105 was selected based on qRT-PCR expression analysis for further investigation. To demonstrate the significance of GauERF105, VIGS was utilized, revealing that suppressing GauERF105 leads to more severe infections in cotton plants compared to the wild-type. Additionally, the silenced plants exhibited reduced lignin deposition in the stems compared to the WT plants, indicating that the silencing of GauERF105 also impacts lignin content. The overexpression of GauERF105 in Arabidopsis confirmed its pivotal role in conferring resistance against Verticillium dahliae infection. Our results suggest that WT possesses higher levels of the oxidative stress markers MDA and H2O2 as compared to the overexpressed lines. In contrast, the activities of the antioxidant enzymes SOD and POD were higher in the overexpressed lines compared to the WT. Furthermore, DAB and trypan staining of the overexpressed lines suggested a greater impact of the disease in the wild-type compared to the transgenic lines.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings provide confirmation that GauERF105 is a crucial candidate in the defense mechanism of cotton against Verticillium dahliae invasion, and plays a pivotal role in this process. These results have the potential to facilitate the development of germplasm resistance in cotton.

Role of Lake Aquatic-Terrestrial Ecotones in the Ecological Restoration of Eutrophic Water Bodies

Freshwater lake eutrophication is a global concern causing adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. The degradation of lake aquatic-terrestrial ecotones, which are the transitional zones between terrestrial and water ecosystems, contributes to eutrophication. These ecotones play vital roles in nutrient cycling, runoff control, biodiversity conservation, and habitat provision. In the past three decades, the research on lake aquatic-terrestrial ecotones has focused on techniques for managing contaminants and runoff purification. This paper reviews the recent studies on the restoration ability of eutrophic water bodies in lake aquatic-terrestrial ecotones in recent years regarding three aspects: the establishment, restoration mechanism, and improvement of restoration function. In addition, ecological factors such as lakeshore height, water level, surface runoff, shallow groundwater level, and rainfall intensity have impacts on the restoration capacity of lake aquatic-terrestrial ecotones.

Seasonal variation and provenance of organic matter in the surface sediments of the three gorges reservoir: Stable isotope analysis and implications for agricultural management

The construction of the Three Gorges Dam has altered the hydrology and increased the trapping of sediment in the reservoir. This has also changed the composition and export of particulate organic matter in the Yangtze River. To understand the seasonal variations and sources of organic matter in sediments, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), δ¹³C_org and δ¹⁵N in surface sediment samples from the mainstream and tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir were measured in the summer (July) and winter (December) of 2017, respectively. The results showed that the concentrations of TOC and TN in the surface sediments of the Three Gorges Reservoir were 0.79 %-1.46 % and 0.07 %-0.13 %, respectively. The ranges of δ¹³C_org and δ¹⁵N were - 26.35 ‰ to-24.70 ‰ and 2.59 ‰ to 5.67 ‰, respectively. According to δ¹³C_org and the TOC/TN ratio, the source range of organic matter was determined, and the contributions of different organic matter sources were quantified using a Bayesian mixed model. The results showed that soil organic matter and river plankton were the main sources of surface sediment organic matter in summer, whereas soil organic matter and aquatic vascular plants were the main sources in winter. The source of organic matter is related to biological factors in summer, whereas it is mainly caused by hydrodynamic conditions in winter. The analysis of δ¹⁵N further reveals that there are obvious external pollutants in the Three Gorges Reservoir, mainly related to artificial nitrogen fertiliser and domestic sewage. This study highlights the influence that soil nitrogen loss may be an important reason for the impact of agricultural non-point source pollution in the reservoir area, showing seasonal differences which were mainly affected by rainfall in summer and controlled by impoundment in winter. Hence, fine nitrogen management is required to reduce pollution in the Three Gorges Reservoir.

Physiological, biochemical, and metabolic changes in diploid and triploid watermelon leaves during flooding

BACKGROUND

Flooding is a major stress factor impacting watermelon growth and production globally. Metabolites play a crucial role in coping with both biotic and abiotic stresses.

METHODS

In this study, diploid (2X) and triploid (3X) watermelons were investigated to determine their flooding tolerance mechanisms by examining physiological, biochemical, and metabolic changes at different stages. Metabolite quantification was done using UPLC-ESI-MS/MS and a total of 682 metabolites were detected.

RESULTS

The results showed that 2X watermelon leaves had lower chlorophyll content and fresh weights compared to 3X. The activities of antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), were higher in 3X than in 2X. 3X watermelon leaves showed lower O₂ production rates, MDA, and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) levels in response to flooding, while higher ethylene production was observed. 3X had higher levels of dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and ascorbic acid + dehydrogenase (AsA + DHA), but both 2X and 3X showed a significant decline in the AsA/DHA ratio at later stages of flooding. Among them, 4-guanidinobutyric acid (mws0567), an organic acid, may be a candidate metabolite responsible for flooding tolerance in watermelon and had higher expression levels in 3X watermelon, suggesting that triploid watermelon is more tolerant to flooding.

CONCLUSION

This study provides insights into the response of 2X and 3X watermelon to flooding and the physiological, biochemical, and metabolic changes involved. It will serve as a foundation for future in-depth molecular and genetic studies on flooding response in watermelon.

Distinguishing the mechanisms driving multifaceted plant diversity in subtropical reservoir riparian zones

Understanding the multifaceted plant diversity and its maintenance mechanisms is crucial for biodiversity conservation. Dam-induced water level fluctuations dramatically alter various aspects of riparian diversity, such as taxonomic (TD), phylogenetic (PD), or functional (FD) diversity. However, few studies simultaneously evaluated plant TD, FD, and PD, especially in the subtropical reservoir riparian zone. Here we sampled plant diversity and environmental drivers along inundation gradients of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region in China. We integrated multifaceted plant diversity to assess how distinct ecological processes affect the plant community assembly and how they respond to inundation gradients, spatial variability, climate, and soils in dam-regulated riparian zones. We found that alpha TD, PD, and FD diversity exhibited decreasing trends with increasing inundation gradients and significant positive correlations with soil organic matter. The number of clustering plant communities increases along the inundation gradients. Beta TD and PD diversity were mainly dominated by species turnover with fewer contributions from nestedness, while beta FD diversity was mainly dominated by nestedness with fewer contributions from species turnover. The explainable rates of different dimensions of beta diversity, turnover, and nestedness ranged from 11% to 61%, with spatial factors explaining the highest beta diversity in different dimensions, followed by inundation gradients, soil properties, and climate variables. Our results suggest dispersal limitations are more important for species turnover in dam-regulated riparian zones at regional scales, while inundation gradients and soil fertility are more critical in shaping plant community assemblages at the local scale. This study emphasizes that environmental and spatial gradients are critical for understanding the assembly mechanisms driving multifaceted plant communities at local and regional scales and reinforces the importance of protecting seed sources and dispersal pathways and maintaining river connectivity when implementing restoration projects.

Shift from soil chemical to physical filters in assembling riparian floristic communities along a flooding stress gradient

Understanding community assembly is a key issue in recognizing community succession and guiding the restoration of degraded ecosystems. Based on the stress-dominance hypothesis (SDH), along a gradient of increasing environmental stress, the relative importance of environmental filtering is supposed to be dominant but species interaction could be a minor process in assembling communities. However, this hypothesized model of the assembly-rule shift was equivocally supported by various studies. In this study, by examining riparian plant communities with the zonation distribution of species composition along a markedly contrast flooding-stress gradient, a general aim was to clarify whether assembly rules of the communities would be also sorted into the zonation pattern as expected by the SDH. Another aim was to identify how edaphic factors associate with the assembly processes. Firstly, we found that even under the distinct stress gradient, community assembly was not stratified into different rules as the SDH expected, but environmental filtering appeared as a dominant assembly process across the stress gradient. Secondly, although filtering holds as a dominant assembly rule, environmental filters were found different along the gradient. By disentangling the filters of edaphic attributes, we found that the filters significantly shifted from soil physical properties to chemical nutrients governing the filtering process along the gradient. This result revealed that, across the contrast gradient, the environmental deterministic process on assembly is so strong that the other assembly processes became weaker. By synthesizing our results, the SDH may not be applied even under the context of a contrast stress gradient, which suggests that environmental context may be a key in testing and applying the SDH. Finally, in guiding riparian restoration under strong stress, we suggest that soil physical structure rather than chemical nutrients shall be given a priority for consideration in rebuilding the degraded riparian communities.

Regulating autogenic vegetation in the riparian zone reduces carbon emissions: Evidence from a microcosm study

Riparian zones have been found to be hot spots of greenhouse gas (GHG) production and have attracted increasing attention in recent decades. The occurrence of autogenic vegetation in riparian zones is prevalent, but little information is available concerning the influence of the occurrence and decomposition of this vegetation on carbon mitigation. We conducted a 220-day (110 days for the dry season and 110 days for the flooded season) microcosm experiment to study the mitigation and transformation of carbon regulated by the vegetation. The results revealed that there was a carbon dioxide (CO₂) flux in the treatment with vegetation, and that without vegetation harvesting (835.58 mg/m²/h) was close to that with vegetation harvesting (796.22 mg/m²/h) under the simulated dry season conditions, but it was significantly higher than that without vegetation seedlings (411.55 mg/m²/h). After being flooded, the decomposition of the vegetation residues increased the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the sediment, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration of the water, and the dissolved CO₂ and methane (CH₄) contents of the sediment. This effect was reversed by harvesting the vegetation biomass. During the flooded season, the CO₂ flux reached 222.95 mg/m²/h in the vegetation seeded treatment, but it decreased to -53.71 mg/m²/h when the vegetation biomass was harvested before being submerged. This was due to the decrease in the substrate available for CO₂ production, the altered microorganism communities, and the decrease in the abundance of carbon metabolizing related enzymes. As a result, vegetation harvesting reduced the net carbon emissions by 48 % compared to that without vegetation regulation during the 220-day incubation period. The results of this study are significant to implementing measures to reduce GHG emissions from the riparian zone.

Nutrient Inputs Alleviate Negative Effects of Early and Subsequent Flooding on Growth of Polygonum hydropiper With the Aid of Adventitious Roots

Riparian plants are exposed to harmful stress induced by flooding, which is often accompanied by eutrophication in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. The phenomenon is mainly caused by domestic sewage discharges, slow water flow, and agricultural fertilizer pollution. Simulating abiotic stress, such as flooding at the initial period, can act as a signal and induce positive responses of plants to subsequent severe stress. In addition, eutrophication supplies nutrients, provides a favorable environment in the early stages of plant, and facilitates good performance in later development. However, whether early flooding (with or without eutrophication) acts as positive cue or as stress on plants at different developmental stages remains unclear. To address this question, seeds of Polygonum hydropiper were collected from low and high elevations in the hydro-fluctuation belt of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. Plants germinated from these seeds were subjected to shallower and shorter early flooding treatments with or without eutrophication. Subsequently, plants were subjected to deeper and longer flooding treatments with or without eutrophication. Early flooding and eutrophic flooding significantly induced generation of adventitious roots, suggesting morphological adaptation to flooding. Although early flooding and eutrophic flooding treatments did not increase plant biomass in subsequent treatments compared with control, stem length, length and width of the 1st fully expanded leaf, and biomass of plants in the early eutrophic treatment were higher than these of the early flooding treatment plants. These results suggest a negative lag-effect of early flooding, and also indicate that nutrient inputs can alleviate such effects. Similarly, subsequent eutrophic flooding also enhanced plant growth compared with subsequent flooding, showing significantly higher values of leaf traits and adventitious root number. Plants originated from low elevation had significantly higher functional leaf length and stem biomass compared with those from high elevation. These results suggest that nutrient inputs can alleviate negative effects of early and subsequent flooding on growth of P. hydropiper with the generation of adventitious roots.

Soil seedbank: Importance for revegetation in the water level fluctuation zone of the reservoir area

Vegetation succession in the water level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) is driven by periodical water fluctuations, the mechanisms of response and synergistic evolution between aboveground vegetation (AGV) and soil seed bank (SSB) in the WLFZ remain unclear. To illustrate the response between AGV and SSB and the importance of SSB for revegetation in the WLFZ, the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) was taken as the target in the current study, and five sampling sites that lie in the center of reservoir and major tributaries of the TGR were selected. Plant community survey along the three water level gradients (i.e., 165-170 m, 170-175 m and 175-180 m) was conducted. Simultaneously, SSB samples on the topsoil (0-5 cm) were collected for germination experiments. A total of forty-nine species were observed from the SSB, belonging to 24 families and 47 genera, of which Asteraceae (8 species) and Poaceae (6 species) dominated. The number of total germinated seedlings species from soil samples from the sampling sites differed, i.e., was lower in Fengjie and Wushan compared to Yunyang, Gaoyang and Fengdu. The seed density in 165-170 m was significantly lower than that of 170-175 m and 175-180 m (p < 0.05). The Sørensen similarity coefficients between AGV and SSB tended to decrease with the increase of water level gradient, ranging from 0.04 to 0.42. SSB species composition was significantly associated with total carbon and total nitrogen contents of the soil (both p < 0.05). The SSB density was significantly negatively correlated with concentration of soil total nitrogen (p < 0.05), the species richness of SSB was significantly negatively correlated with soil pH value (p < 0.05). Hence, the relationship between the SSB and the soil habitat might be an important factor driving the construction of vegetation in the WLFZ. The correlation between dynamic of SSB and TGR hydrological regimes should be considered for revegetation in the WLFZ.

Dam-induced difference of invasive plant species distribution along the riparian habitats

Riparian ecosystem is structurally unstable due to the frequent disturbances from water fluctuation. Moreover, dams on large rivers tend to trigger fundamental changes of the composition and structure of riparian plant communities, which provides high odds for invasive species to colonize. Yet, how the invasive species distribute along a dam-induced riparian habitat, and how the native species resist to plant invasion are still puzzles. In this study, we investigated spatial distribution of invasive floral species and its correlation with the distance from dam and the dam-triggered flooding stresses, as well as the resistance of native species to plant invasion in the water level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) along the Yangtze River. By our investigation, a total of 43 alien plant species belonging to 14 families and 34 genera were found, including 20 existed and 23 newly discovered alien species recorded. Most of the new invasive species are annual herbs of the Asteraceae family. At the current successional stage, the new invasive species had not yet fully occupied the habitats of the existed invasive species. Longitudinally, number and coverages of the new invasive species showed an opposite distribution pattern to the existed invasive species, but vertically they demonstrated similar pattern. Currently, the new dominant invasive species are mainly concentrated at the intermediate elevation of WLFZ in the middle section of the reservoir, whereas the existed dominant invasive species have proliferated across the whole WLFZ. Additionally, native species showed a weak resistance to plant invasion, and water fluctuation along the elevation exerted the most significant influence on plant invasion. The results indicated that, after a decade of riparian community succession, the invasiveness of alien species remain persisted. The potential penetration site of the invasion may locate at the intermediate section along the vertical and longitudinal dimension.

Dam inundation simplifies the plant community composition

The construction of dams has caused riparian habitat degradation and ecosystem service loss globally. It is critical to assess the response of riparian plant communities to inundation gradients for their conservation. Recent evidence suggests that plant community assemblages are governed by flooding stress, soil nutrient availability, climate (environmental filtering) and dispersal, speciation, local extinction (dispersal filtering), but it remains unclear which dominates the riparian ecosystem regulated by a dam. Thus, this article aims to elucidate the relative importance of environmental and dispersal filtering to variations in plant communities to understand community assembly mechanisms in riparian ecosystems. Here we used plant community data related to four elevations in the riparian zone of the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir in China to show that species richness and diversity, community height, and the cover of total, annual, and exotic plant categories decreased, while the cover of perennial and native plant groups increased under higher flooding stress. Community composition varied substantially with elevation, and species composition tended to converge with increased inundation, characterized by flood-tolerant species. The community composition underwent stronger environmental filtering at low elevations and stronger dispersal filtering at high elevations, with stronger environmental filtering across riparian ecosystems. Therefore, we conclude that dam inundation drives community assemblages of riparian plants by the combined effects of environmental and dispersal filtering. Still, their relative contribution varies between elevations, and environmental filtering is more important in shaping community assembly. This study is the first to confirm that plant community assembly in the dam-regulated riparian area is determined by both niche-based and stochastic processes. Thus, we highlighted the importance of considering inundation intensity, propagule sources, and river connectivity when implementing restoration projects.

Impacts of riparian width and stream channel width on ecological networks in main waterways and tributaries

Riparian buffer width and stream channel width have different impacts on ecological networks (e.g., plant cover, regeneration, exotics, erosion, habitat, and stressors) and provide various ecosystem services. The protection of riparian zones of increasing widths for higher-order streams and connected tributaries alongside mega-reservoirs and around dams is of great global significance. However, it remains unclear which protection strategies are most effective for such zones. By applying a rapid field-based approach with 326 transects on an inundated area of 58,000 km² within the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir (TGDR) in China, we found that riparian buffer areas were influenced differently by broad-ranging widths. The riparian buffer width of 101.84 ± 72.64 m (mean ± standard deviation) had the greatest impact on the main waterway, whereas the stream channel width of 99.87 ± 97.10 m was most influential in tributaries. The correlation coefficient strengths among ecological and stress parameters (independently) were relatively greater in the main waterway riparian zones; the highest value was r = 0.930 using Pearson correlation (p < 0.05). In contrast, stress parameters revealed substantial and strong relationships with ecological parameters in tributaries, with the highest value being r = 0.551. Riparian width had the strongest influence on buffer vegetation scales, high-impact exotics, and bank stability. In comparison, channel width had the greatest effect on tree roots, dominant tree regeneration, and agricultural farming. These parameters showed distinctive responses in the shapes of indexing in higher-order streams and connected tributaries. These observations confirm the urgent need for research on regional-based extended riparian areas managed by the same administration strategies. Revised guidelines are needed to protect massive dam and reservoir ecosystems from further deterioration.

Evaluation of the impact of extreme floods on the biodiversity of terrestrial animals

Extreme floods seriously affect the biodiversity of terrestrial animals (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects). The degree of impact depends on many factors, e.g., animal characteristics, natural conditions, and flood characteristics. Previous evaluation methods are not suitable for assessing the impact of floods on the biodiversity of all species in the entire submerged area, nor do they accurately reflect variability in the degree of impact. First, the influencing factors were boiled down to four: ratio of flood duration to survival time of animals in floods (D), ratio of flood depth to plant height (S), migration ability of animals (M), and temperature (T), which are represented by a coefficient I. Then, we proposed a calculation method for I based on the four factors. Third, we proposed the total and average biodiversity impact indices, namely, the TBI and ABI, respectively, indicating the overall and average impacts of floods on biodiversity in the submerged area, with the calculation method considering both the number of species and I. An extreme flood was simulated to obtain the flood parameters. In addition, we analyzed monthly changes in partial influencing factors. Finally, the impact of extreme floods on the biodiversity of terrestrial animals in the submerged area was evaluated monthly, and it was found that (1) TBI and ABI changed with space; (2) the ABI of different animals in descending order were mammals, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and birds; (3) the ABI of different land use types in descending order were cropland, orchard and shrubland, grassland, and forest and for TBI were orchard and shrubland, cropland, forest, and grassland; and (4) the TBI and ABI of different animals and land use types changed over time. The proposed method and indices are suitable for assessing the impact of floods on the biodiversity of any organism in any area.

Transcriptomic Analysis of the Photosynthetic, Respiration, and Aerenchyma Adaptation Strategies in Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) under Different Submergence Stress

Submergence impedes photosynthesis and respiration but facilitates aerenchyma formation in bermudagrass. Still, the regulatory genes underlying these physiological responses are unclear in the literature. To identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to these physiological mechanisms, we studied the expression of DEGs in aboveground and underground tissues of bermudagrass after a 7 d treatment under control (CK), shallow submergence (SS), and deep submergence (DS). Results show that compared with CK, 12276 and 12559 DEGs were identified under SS and DS, respectively. Among them, the DEGs closely related to the metabolism of chlorophyll biosynthesis, light-harvesting, protein complex, and carbon fixation were down-regulated in SS and DS. Meanwhile, a large number of DEGs involved in starch and sucrose hydrolase activities, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation were down-regulated in aboveground tissues of bermudagrass in SS and DS. Whereas in underground tissues of bermudagrass these DEGs were all up-regulated under SS, only beta-fructofuranosidase and α-amylase related genes were up-regulated under DS. In addition, we found that DEGs associated with ethylene signaling, Ca²⁺-ROS signaling, and cell wall modification were also up-regulated during aerenchyma formation in underground tissues of bermudagrass under SS and DS. These results provide the basis for further exploration of the regulatory and functional genes related to the adaptability of bermudagrass to submergence.

Assessing riparian zone changes under the influence of stress factors in higher-order streams and tributaries: Implications for the management of massive dams and reservoirs

Riparian ecosystem services along higher-order streams and connected tributaries may change over time as disturbances continuously increase, resulting in diverse deterioration of buffer zones. How habitat, plant cover, regeneration, erosion, and exotic parameters (riparian health conditions) change within huge dams and reservoirs worldwide is an unanswered question. We used multivariate statistical techniques to assess changes in riparian health parameters affected by disturbances identified in 304 transects within the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir, China, and associated tributaries. Kruskal-Wallis tests (p < 0.01) revealed high diversity in habitat, plant cover, regeneration, erosion, and overall stream condition. There was also notable variance relating to exotic and pressure parameters. The critical variables of riparian health indicators and stress factors identified by principal component analysis explained 58.40% and 74.6% (in the main waterway) and 53.23% and 71.0% (in the tributaries) of the total variance. Among riparian health indicators, one habitat parameter (riparian vegetation width) in the main waterway and one regeneration parameter (tree size classes) in tributaries contributed greatly, along with other specified parameters. Furthermore, stress factors such as farming systems, land-use types, and pollutant activity variables had the highest impact on these water bodies. In comparison, counting stress factors alone showed more deterioration in the main waterway with a range of (r = -0.527- 0.493), as determined using Pearson correlation (p < 0.05). Furthermore, after indexing, the parameters exhibited weaker coefficient values in tributaries, where exotic correlated negatively with other indexed values. These findings are relevant for managers of massive dam and reservoir ecosystems seeking to mitigate environmental and socioeconomic losses.
