Insights into the adsorption mechanism of tannic acid by a green synthesized nano-hydroxyapatite and its effect on aqueous Cu(II) removal

Preparation of nanocellulose light porous material adsorbed with tannic acid and its application in fresh-keeping pad

This study fabricated nanocellulose lightweight porous material (TOCNF-G-LPM-TA) as absorbent fresh-keeping pad for meat products, using TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril (TOCNF) and gelatin as structural skeleton and tannic acid (TA) as antibacterial component of TOCNF lightweight porous material (TOCNF-G-LPM). The adsorption kinetics, capacity and mechanism of TOCNF-G-LPM in different initial concentrations of TA solutions were investigated, the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of TOCNF-G-LPM-TA and its fresh-keeping effect on refrigerated pork at 4 ℃ were studied. Due to strong hydrogen bonding and porous structure, TOCNF-G-LPM exhibited excellent TA adsorption ability (230 mg/g) conforming with pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. TA endowed TOCNF-G-LPM with good antioxidant and antibacterial activities. According to changes in appearance, pH and TVB-N values of pork during storage at 4 ℃, TOCNF-G-LPM-TA effectively extended the shelf life of refrigerated pork. This work provides a facile method for preparing nanocellulose based absorbent fresh-keeping pads.

Study on the performance and mechanism of cobaltous ion removal from water by a high-efficiency strontium-doped hydroxyapatite adsorbent

In this study, a high-efficiency strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sr-HAP) adsorbent was synthesized by a sol-gel method for removing cobaltous ions (Co(II)) from water. The effects of adsorbent dose, initial solution pH, initial Co(II) concentration and temperature on the removal performance of Co(II) were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the optimum Sr-HAP dose was 0.30 g/50 mL solution, the Sr-HAP adsorbent could effectively remove Co(II) in a wide pH range of 3-8. Increasing temperature was conducive to the adsorption, and the maximum Co(II) adsorption capacity by Sr-HAP reached 48.467 mg/g at 45 °C. The adsorption of Co(II) followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the Co(II) adsorption by Sr-HAP was attributed mainly to chemisorption. The isothermal adsorption results showed that at lower Co(II) equilibrium concentration, the Langmuir model fitted the data better than the Freundlich model but opposite at higher Co(II) equilibrium concentration. Therefore, the adsorption of Co(II) was a process from monolayer adsorption to multilayer adsorption with the increase of the Co(II) equilibrium concentration. The diffusion analysis of Co(II) to Sr-HAP indicated that the internal diffusion and surface adsorption were the rate-controlled steps of Co(II) adsorption. Thermodynamic study demonstrated that the Co(II) adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The mechanism study revealed that in addition to chemisorption, Sr-HAP also removed Co(II) ions from water via ion exchange and surface complexation.

Simultaneous coupling of metal removal and visual detection by nature-inspired polyphenol-amine surface chemistry

The interplay between polyphenols, amines, and metals has broad implications for surface chemistry, biomaterials, energy storage, and environmental science. Traditionally, polyphenol-amine combinations have been recognized for their ability to form adhesive, material-independent thin layers that offer a diverse range of surface functionalities. Herein, we demonstrate that a coating of tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) provides an efficient platform for capturing and monitoring metal ions in water. A unique feature of our PEI/TA-coated microbeads is the 'Detection-Capture' (Detec-Ture) mechanism. The galloyl groups in TA coordinate with Fe(III) ions (capture), initiating their oxidation to gallol-quinone. These oxidized groups subsequently react with PEI amines, leading to the formation of an Fe(II/III)-gallol-PEI network that produces a vivid purple color, thereby enabling visual detection. This mechanism couples metal capture directly with detection, distinguishing our approach from existing studies, which have either solely focused on metal removal or metal detection. The metal capturing capacity of our materials stands at 0.55 mg g-1, comparable to that of established materials like alginate and wollastonite. The detection sensitivity reaches down to 0.5 ppm. Our findings introduce a novel approach to the utility of metal-polyphenol-amine networks, presenting a new class of materials suited for simultaneous metal ion detection and capture in environmental applications.

Modification of cellulosic adsorbent via iron-based metal phenolic networks coating for efficient removal of chromium ion

Surface modification of durian rind cellulose (DCell) was done by utilizing the strong coordination effect of polyphenol-based metal phenolic networks (MPNs). MPNs from Fe(III)-tannic acid (FTN) and Fe(III)-gallic acid (FGN) were coated on DCell via a self-assembly reaction at pH 8, resulting in adsorbent composites of FTN@DCell and FGN@DCell for removal of Cr(VI). Batch adsorption experiments revealed that FTN coating resulted in an adsorbent composite with higher adsorption capacity than FGN coating, owing to the greater number of additional adsorption sites from phenolic hydroxyl groups of tannic acid. FTN@DCell exhibits an equilibrium adsorption capacity at 30°C of 110.9 mg/g for Cr(VI), significantly higher than FGN@DCell (73.63 mg/g); the adsorption capacity was increased at higher temperature (i.e., 155.8 and 116.8 mg/g at 50°C for FTN@DCell and FGN@DCell, respectively). Effects of pH, adsorbent dose, initial concentration, and coexisting ions on Cr(VI) removal were investigated. The kinetics fractal-based model Brouers-Sotolongo indicates the 1st and 2nd order reaction for Cr(VI) adsorption on FTN@DCell and FGN@DCell, respectively. The isotherm data can be described with a fractal-based model, which implies the heterogeneous nature of the adsorbent surface sites. The Cr(VI) adsorption via surface complexation with phenolic hydroxyl groups was confirmed by evaluating the functional groups shifting. FGN@DCell and FTN@DCell were found to have good reusability, maintaining over 50 % of their adsorption efficiency after four adsorption-desorption cycles. Environmental assessment with Arabidopsis thaliana demonstrated their potential in eliminating the Cr(VI) phytotoxic effect. Thus, this study has shown the efficient and economical conversion of durian waste into environmentally benign adsorbent for heavy metal treatment.

Tannic acid adsorption properties of cellulose nanocrystalline/fish swim bladder gelatin composite sponge

Foods and beverages with excessive tannins acid (TA) content taste astringent and bitter. The overconsumption of TA could result in nutritional and digestive problems. In this study, the cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)/fish swim bladder gelatin (FG) composite sponge was prepared with glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. The TA adsorption performance of the sponge was discussed. The freeze-dried CNC/FG composite sponge had a porous network structure. CNC was combined into the FG matrix as a reinforcing phase. The mechanical strength, thermal stability, and swelling properties of the composite sponge were improved with the addition of an appropriate amount of CNC. Although CNC decreased the porosity of composite sponge, the increase in active adsorption sites resulted in an overall positive effect on its TA adsorption properties. Under the optimal adsorption conditions, the TA removal rate of 1.0 % CNC composites reached 80.4 %. Furthermore, the sponge retained a TA removal rate of 54 % after five cycles of adsorption and desorption using 50 % ethanol. The results demonstrated that CNC/FG composite sponge has application potential in the field of adsorption materials for TA.

Synthesis and Characterization of Epigallocatechin Gallate-mediated Hydroxyapatite

INTRODUCTION

Hydroxyapatite is a significant material that finds its application in the field of dental and bone tissue engineering.

METHODS

The formulation of nanohydroxyapatite with the aid of bioactive compounds has gained importance in recent years due to the beneficial activity contributed by them. The present work focuses on the formulation of nanohydroxyapatite synthesis using epigallocatechin gallate, an active biochemical component of green tea.

RESULTS

The prepared epigallocatechin gallate-mediated nanohydroxyapatite (epi-HAp) was nanoglobular in shape and composed of calcium, phosphorous, carbon and oxygen, which was confirmed by Scanning electron microscope- energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The Attenuated Total Reflection- Infra red spectroscopy (ATR-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) assured that the reduction and stabilisation of nanohydroxyapatite were mediated by epigallocatechin gallate.

CONCLUSION

The epi-HAp exhibited anti-inflammatory behaviour along with nil effect on cytotoxicity. To be precise, the epi-HAp can be an effective biomaterial in bone and dental applications.

Carboxyl and polyamine groups functionalized polyacrylonitrile fibers for efficient recovery of copper ions from solution

Heavy metals (e.g., Cu) in wastewater are attractive resources for diverse applications, and adsorption is a promising route to recovery of heavy metals from wastewater. However, high-performance adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, speed, and stability remain challenging. Herein, chelating fibers were prepared by chemically grafting amine and carboxyl groups onto the polyacrylonitrile fiber surface and used in the wastewater's adsorption of Cu2+. The adsorption behavior of Cu2+ on the fibers was systematically investigated, and the post-adsorption fibers were comprehensively characterized to uncover the adsorption mechanism. The results show that chelated fiber has a 136.3 mg/g maximum capacity for Cu2+ adsorption at pH = 5, and the whole adsorption process could reach equilibrium in about 60 min. The adsorption process corresponds to the quasi-secondary kinetic and Langmuir models. The results of adsorption, FTIR, and XPS tests indicate that the synergistic coordination of -COOH and -NH2 plays a leading role in the rapid capture of Cu2+. In addition, introducing hydrophilic groups facilitates the rapid contact and interaction of the fibers with Cu2+ in the solution. After being used five times, the fiber's adsorption capacity remains at over 90% of its original level.

Study on a co-hybrid nano-hydroxyapatite with lignin derivatives and alendronate and the reinforce effect for poly(lactide-co-glycolide)

A novel co-hybrid nano-apatite (n-HA) by introducing lignin derivatives (LDs) and alendronate (ALE) was designed to reinforce poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). The effect of different addition methods and contents of LDs, lignin derivatives sorts of lignosulfonate (LS), alkali lignin (AL) and carboxymethyl lignin (CML), and the addition order of ALE on the dispersion of hybrid n-HA, and reinforce effective for PLGA were investigated by FTIR, XRD, TEM, TGA, XPS, N2 adsorption/desorption, zeta potential, dispersion experiments, universal testing machine, SEM, DSC and POM. The results showed that the addition order could regulate the growth of n-HA crystal planes by binding with Ca2+, and co-hybrid HA by LDs and ALE possessed better dispersion owing to the synergistic effect. Moreover, 10 wt% LS-ALE-n-HA displayed the best reinforce effect, and the tensile strength of composite was 24.43 % higher than that of PLGA, even 15 wt% LS-ALE-n-HA was added, it still exhibited reinforce effect for PLGA. In vitro soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF) results indicated that LS-ALE-n-HA delayed tensile strength reduce of PLGA and promoted bone-like apatite deposition. The cell proliferation results demonstrated that the hybrid n-HA by the introduction of ALE endowed PLGA with better cell adhesion and proliferation.

Green synthesized hydroxyapatite for efficient immobilization of cadmium in weakly alkaline environment

The development of cost-effective passivators for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils has been a research hotspot and an unsolved challenge. Herein, a novel hydroxyapatite (GSCH) was synthesized by co-precipitating distiller effluent-derived Ca with (NH₄)₂HPO₄ using straw-derived dissolved organic matter (S-DOM) as the dispersant. Batch adsorption experiments and soil incubation tests were performed to assess the immobilization efficiency of GSCH for Cd in weakly alkaline environments. As a result, GSCH showed an excellent adsorption efficiency to Cd with a maximum adsorption amount of ∼222 mg g^-1, which was fairly competitive compared to other similar previously materials reported. The kinetic data indicated that the adsorption of Cd on GSCH was a chemical and irreversible process, while the thermodynamic data revealed a spontaneous (ΔG° < 0) and endothermic (ΔH° > 0) adsorption process. Based on mechanism analysis, both physisorption (e.g., electrostatic attraction and pore filling) and chemisorption (e.g., ion exchange and complexation) were responsible for Cd adsorption on GSCH. Particularly, the incorporated S-DOM and hydroxyapatite phase in GSCH acted synergistically in the adsorption process. The incubation results showed that GSCH application could significantly reduce the bioavailability, phytoavailability and bioaccessibility of Cd in soil by 48.4%-57.8%, 20.4%-28.6% and 12.6%-24.0%, respectively. Moreover, GSCH application also improved soil bacterial communities and enhanced soil nutrient availability. Overall, this is the first study to demonstrate the potential application value of GSCH in Cd immobilization, providing promising insights into the development of green and cost-effective hydroxyapatite-based passivators for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Mussel-Inspired Caries Management Strategy: Constructing a Tribioactive Tooth Surface with Remineralization, Antibiofilm, and Anti-inflammation Activity

Dental caries is a common chronic oral disease in humans resulting from tooth demineralization caused by acid production of bacterial plaque, which leads to the destruction of enamel and dentin and oral inflammation. However, it is still a challenge that the function of natural active ingredients in currently available oral care products is not comprehensive, especially the lack of remineralization. Here, inspired by the strong biological adhesion ability of mussels and ancient oral disease plant therapy, a multifunctional strategy is proposed to construct a bioactive tooth surface to treat dental caries. It has been demonstrated that the Turkish gall extract (TGE) can inhibit adhesion of cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Actinomyces viscosus and destroy biofilms on the tooth surface. Meanwhile, TGE can reduce the expression of inflammatory factors. Notably, the TGE coating can induce the growth of hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals in vivo and in vitro, recovering the enamel mechanical properties under normal oral conditions. MD simulations interpreted the adsorption mechanism by which the hydroxyl groups in TGE bind to phosphate group (PO₄^3-) on the tooth surface, attracting calcium ions (Ca²⁺) as nucleation sites for remineralization. This work underlines the importance of TGE coating in remineralization, antibiofilm, and anti-inflammation activity as a promising strategy for dental caries.

New insights into MXene applications for sustainable environmental remediation

Multiple ecological contaminants in gaseous, liquid, and solid forms are vented into ecosystems due to the huge growth of industrialization, which is today at the forefront of worldwide attention. High-efficiency removal of these environmental pollutants is a must because of the potential harm to public health and biodiversity. The alarming concern has led to the synthesis of improved nanomaterials for removing pollutants. A path to innovative methods for identifying and preventing several obnoxious, hazardous contaminants from entering the environment is grabbing attention. Various applications in diverse industries are seen as a potential directions for researchers. MXene is a new, excellent, and advanced material that has received greater importance related to the environmental application. Due to its unique physicochemical and mechanical properties, high specific surface area, physiological compatibility, strong electrodynamics, and raised specific surface area wettability, its applications are growing. This review paper examines the most recent methods and trends for environmental pollutant removal using advanced 2D Mxene materials. In addition, the history and the development of MXene synthesis were elaborated. Furthermore, an extreme summary of various environmental pollutants removal has been discussed, and the future challenges along with their future perspectives have been illustrated.

UV-Cured Chitosan-Based Hydrogels Strengthened by Tannic Acid for the Removal of Copper Ions from Water

In this work, a new environmentally friendly material for the removal of heavy metal ions was developed to enhance the adsorption efficiency of photocurable chitosan-based hydrogels (CHg). The acknowledged affinity of tannic acid (TA) to metal ions was investigated to improve the properties of hydrogels obtained from natural and renewable sources (CHg-TA). The hydrogel preparation was performed via a simple two-step method consisting of the photocrosslinking of methacrylated chitosan and its subsequent swelling in the TA solution. The samples were characterized using ATR-FTIR, SEM, and Folin-Ciocalteu (F&C) assay. Moreover, the mechanical properties and the ζ potential of CHg and CHg-TA were tested. The copper ion was selected as a pollutant model. The adsorption capacity (Qe) of CHg and CHg-TA was assessed as a function of pH. Under acidic conditions, CHg-TA shows a higher Qe than CHg through the coordination of copper ions by TA. At an alkaline pH, the phenols convert into a quinone form, decreasing the Qe of CHg-TA, and the performance of CHg was found to be improved. A partial TA release can occur in the copper solution due to its high hydrophilicity and strong acidic pH conditions. Additionally, the reusability of hydrogels was assessed, and the high number of recycling cycles of CHg-TA was related to its high mechanical performance (compression tests). These findings suggest CHg-TA as a promising green candidate for heavy metal ion removal from acidic wastewater.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibrous membranes via green electrospinning and tannin coating for selective removal of Pb(II) ion

The conventional adsorbent fabrication methods involve complicated processes and may cause secondary contaminations. Therefore, an effective eco-friendly method is required for the fabrication of heavy metal adsorbents using inexpensive and eco-friendly materials without secondary pollution during their process. In this study, nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) were fabricated via green electrospinning of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), a hydrophilic polymer, and their water resistance was improved through simple heat treatment without using additional additives. Then, nanofibrous heavy metal adsorbents were prepared by dip-coating the NFMs in an aqueous solution of tannic acid (TA), a natural polyphenol. First, the adsorption/desorption behavior of TA on PVA NFMs during the TA coating process was investigated. In addition, the effects of TA coating on the mechanical properties and heavy metal adsorption characteristics of the PVA NFMs were analyzed. The TA coating significantly increased the mechanical strength, heat resistance, and heavy metal (Pb(II)) adsorption capacity of the PVA NFM. The Pb²⁺ adsorption amount of TA-coated PVA NFMs exhibited about 5-7 times higher than those of other heavy metal ions, indicating excellent selectivity for Pb²⁺. In addition, the TA-coated PVA NFMs retained >70% of its initial adsorption capacity even after four cycles of adsorption/desorption, indicating its reusability.

Synthesis of Hybrid Polyphenol/Hydroxyapatite Nanomaterials with Anti-Radical Properties

Plant-derived natural bioactive molecules are of great therapeutic potential but, so far, their application in nanomedicine has scarcely been studied. This work aimed at comparing two methodologies, i.e., adsorption and in situ incorporation, to prepare hybrid polyphenol/hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. Two flavonoids, baicalin and its aglycone derivative baicalein, and two phenolic acids derived from caffeic acid, rosmarinic and chlorogenic acids, were studied. Adsorption of these polyphenols on pre-formed hydroxyapatite nanoparticles did not modify particle size or shape and loading was less than 10% (w/w). In contrast, presence of polyphenols during the synthesis of nanoparticles significantly impacted and sometimes fully inhibited hydroxyapatite formation but recovered particles could exhibit higher loadings. For most hybrid particles, release profiles consisted of a 24 h burst effect followed by a slow release over 2 weeks. Antioxidant properties of the polyphenols were preserved after adsorption but not when incorporated in situ. These results provide fruitful clues for the valorization of natural bioactive molecules in nanomedicine.

Bioactive Edible Sodium Alginate Films Incorporated with Tannic Acid as Antimicrobial and Antioxidative Food Packaging

Currently, biodegradable and functional food packaging materials have attracted more and more attention due to their potential advantages. Biopolymers are one of the promising materials used to produce biodegradable food packaging films, and sodium alginate (SA) is one of the most used polysaccharides. In this work, we explored a novel edible sodium alginate (SA)/tannic acid (TA) film as biodegradable active food packaging material. The impact of TA concentration on the UV light blocking ability, transparency, water vapor barrier ability, mechanical strength, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of the SA-TA films was comprehensively investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results revealed that strong hydrogen bonding was the main intermolecular interaction between SA and TA. As TA concentration in the films increased, the water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased from 1.24 × 10^-6 to 0.54 × 10^-6 g/m/h/Pa, the DPPH radical scavenging activity increased from 0.008% to 89.02%. Moreover, the incorporation of TA effectively blocked UV light and elevated antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Overall, the SA films with TA exhibited better water vapor barrier ability, remarkable UV-light barrier ability and antioxidant activity while showing a slight decrease in light transmittance. These results indicated the potential application of TA as a functional additive agent for developing multifunctional food packaging materials.

Explorations on efficient extraction of uranium with porous coal fly ash aerogels

In order to explore a suitable uranium adsorbent with the advantages of low-cost, recyclability and high efficiency, porous coal fly ash aerogels with different size of coal fly ash were synthesized. Among them, PCFAA-1250 (prepared with 1250 mesh coal fly ash (CFA)) showed better adsorption performance and the maximum adsorption efficiency even approached 96.5% (C₀ = 10 mg L^-1, m/V = 1.0 g L^-1, T = 298 K, t = 24 h and pH = 3.0), which was higher than most of previous adsorbents. Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models were more likely to be used to determine the removal behavior of uranium on PCFAA, illustrating that the adsorption reaction was uniform chemisorption. Meanwhile, the adsorption process on PCFAA was spontaneous. Notably, the desorption efficiencies of all of PCFAA were more than 80% after five cycles, which suggested that PCFAA possessed good recyclability, especially PCFAA-1250. Besides, the adsorption mechanism was further revealed via XPS and the uranium ions were immobilized on the surface of adsorbents through complexation. Based on above conclusions, it could be concluded that PCFAA-1250 had the potential to be a candidate for the extraction of uranium from wastewater.

Adsorption of Tannic Acid and Macromolecular Humic/Fulvic Acid onto Polystyrene Microplastics: A Comparison Study

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been widely reported to influence the environmental behavior of microplastics (MPs), but little is known about the properties and mechanisms of interaction between specific DOM components and MPs. Here, we studied the adsorption of three representative DOM components (humic acid, HA; fulvic acid, FA; and tannic acid, TA) on polystyrene (PS) MPs in batch adsorption experiments. Results revealed that HA/FA adsorption was greater under acidic conditions, while higher TA adsorption on PS was found at pH 4 and 6. The divalent cation (Ca2+) exerted a more prominent role in enhancing HA, FA, and TA adsorption on PS than did monovalent ones (K+ and Na+). The adsorption process fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. The adsorption site heterogeneity was evaluated using the site energy distribution analysis based on the Freundlich model. The greater binding ability of HA on the PS surface caused a more negatively charged surface than FA/TA, as reflected by Zeta potential values. The findings of this study not only provide valuable information about the adsorption behavior and interaction processes of various DOM components on PS MPs, but also aid our efforts to evaluate the environmental behaviors of MPs.

Engineering the surfaces of orthopedic implants with osteogenesis and antioxidants to enhance bone formation in vitro and in vivo

Limited osteointegration of orthopedic implants with surrounding tissues has been the leading issue until the failure of orthopedic implants in the long term, which could be induced by multiple factors, including infection, limited abilities for bone formation and remodeling, and an overstressed reactive oxygen species (ROS) environment around implants. To address this challenge, a multifunctional coating composed of tannic acid (TA), nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) and gelatin (Gel) was fabricated by a layer-by-layer (LBL) technique, into which TA, nHA, and Gel were integrated, and their respective functions were utilized to synergistically promote osteogenesis. The fabrication process of (TA@nHA/Gel)_n coatings and related bio-multifunctionalities were thoroughly investigated by various techniques. We found that the (TA@nHA/Gel)_n coatings showed strong antioxidant activity and accelerated cellular attachment in the early stage and proliferation in the long term, largely enhancing osteogenesis in vitro and promoting bone formation in vivo. We believe our findings will guide the design of orthopedic implants in the future, and the strategy developed here could pave the way for multifunctional orthopedic implant coating and protein-related coatings with various potential applications, including biosensors, catalysis, tissue engineering, and life science.

MXenes as emerging nanomaterials in water purification and environmental remediation

Environmental pollution has accelerated and intensified because of the acceleration of industrialization, therefore fabricating excellent materials to remove hazardous pollutants has become inevitable. MXenes as emerging transition metal nitrides, carbides or carbonitrides with high conductivity, hydrophilicity, excellent structural stability, and versatile surface chemistry, become ideal candidates for water purification and environmental remediation. Particularly, MXenes reveal excellent sorption capability and efficient reduction performance for various contaminants of wastewater. In this regard, a comprehensive understanding of the removal behaviors of MXene-based nanomaterials is necessary to explain how they remove various pollutants in water. The eliminate process of MXene-based nanomaterials is collectively influenced by the physicochemical properties of the materials themselves and the chemical properties of different contaminants. Therefore, in this review paper, the synthesis strategies and properties of MXene-based nanomaterials are briefly introduced. Then, the chemical properties, removal behaviors and interaction mechanisms of heavy metal ions, radionuclides, and organic pollutants by MXene-based nanomaterials are highlighted. The overview also emphasizes associated toxicity, secondary contamination, the challenges, and prospects of the MXene-based nanomaterials in the applications of water treatment. This review can supply valuable ideas for fabricating versatile MXene nanomaterials in eliminating water pollution.

Preparation of Amino-Functionalized Mesoporous SBA-15 Nanoparticles and the Improved Adsorption of Tannic Acid in Wastewater

Ordered mesoporous Santa Barbara amorphous (SBA-15) materials have high surface areas and are widely used in adsorption, separation, filtration, and heterogeneous catalytic processes. However, SBA-15 surfaces contain hydroxyl groups that are unsuited to the adsorption of organic pollutants; thus, SBA-15 must be chemically modified to promote its adsorption activity. In this study, amino-functionalized nanoporous SBA-15 was fabricated by employing sodium silicate as a precursor. The structural characteristics of the prepared composites were examined using thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and surface area analysis. The prepared SBA-15 had a large pore size (6.46–7.60 nm), large pore volume (1.037–1.105 cm³/g), and high surface area (546–766 m²/g). Functionalization caused a reduction in the SBA-15 pore volume and surface area, whereas amino groups that promoted an interaction between adsorbates and solids facilitated solute adsorption. The adsorption of tannic acid (TA) onto amino-modified silica composites (SBA-15 and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (SBA-15/APTES) and SBA-15 and pentaethylenehexamine (SBA-15/PEHA)) was studied. Their adsorption capacities were affected by solution temperature, solution pH, agitation speed, adsorbent dosage, and initial TA concentration. The maximum adsorption capacities for SBA-15/APTES and SBA-15/PEHA were 485.18 and 413.33 mg/g, respectively, with SBA-15/APTES exhibiting ultrafast removal of TA (98.61% removal rate at 15 min). In addition, this study explored the thermodynamics, adsorption isotherms, and kinetics. A comparison of two types of amino-functionalized SBA-15 was used for the first time to adsorb TA, which providing valuable information on TA adsorption on high adsorption capacity materials in water media.

Adsorption properties and recognition mechanisms of a novel surface imprinted polymer for selective removal of Cu(II)-citrate complexes

Cu(II)-citrate (Cu(II)-CA) complex, as one of the components in plating solutions, increases the difficulty of Cu(II) treatment due to its stable structure and high mobility. In this work, a novel surface imprinted polymer (Cu-CA-SIP) for selective removal of Cu(II)-CA complex from aqueous solution is synthesized by using polyethyleneimine (PEI) grafted onto chloromethylated polystyrene (CMP) microspheres. Cu(II)-CA anions are successfully imprinted with the molar ration of 1:1 by Cu-CA-SIP at initial pH 4.0. Nearly 100% removal rate can be achieved even at low Cu(II)-CA concentration (0.5 mmol/L), and the maximum Cu(II) uptake of Cu-CA-SIP reaches 1.38 mmol/g at 303 K. In Cu(II)/Fe(III)-CA, Cu(II)/Ni(II)-CA, Cu(II)/Zn(II)-CA and Cu(II)/Cd(II)-CA systems, the relative selectivity coefficients of Cu-CA-SIP for Cu(II)-CA are 9.66, 2.32, 1.40 and 44.55, respectively. Moreover, Cu-CA-SIP can be retrieved with negligible loss of adsorption capacity after six times of reuse. The Cu-CA-SIP column can effectively treat the actual electroplating wastewater within 114 BV, and can still reach 104 BV after three dynamic cycles. Therefore, an innovative imprinted material is designed for the first time on the basis of coordination-configuration recognition mechanism for the treatment of electroplating wastewater, providing a new insight in developing surface imprinted polymer in environmental remediation.

Modification of cyclodextrin and use in environmental applications

Water pollution, which has become a global problem in parallel with environmental pollution, is a problem that needs to be solved urgently, considering the gradual depletion of water resources. The inadequacy of the water treatment methods and the materials used somehow directed the researchers to look for dual character structures such as biocompatible and biodegradable β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). β-CD, which is normally insoluble in water, is used in demanding wastewater applications by being modified with the help of different agents to be water soluble or transformed into polymeric adsorbents as a result of co-polymerization via cross-linkers. In this way, in addition to the host-guest interactions offered by β-CD, secondary forces arising from these interactions provide advantages in terms of regeneration and reusability. However, the adsorption efficiency and synthesis steps need to be improved. Based on the current studies presented in this review, in which cross-linkers and modification methods are also mentioned, suggestions for novel synthesis methods of new-generation β-CD-based materials, criticisms, and recent methods of removal of micropollutants such as heavy metals, industrial dyes, harmful biomolecules, and pharmaceutics wastes are mentioned.

Endowing Orthopedic Implants' Antibacterial, Antioxidation, and Osteogenesis Properties Through a Composite Coating of Nano-Hydroxyapatite, Tannic Acid, and Lysozyme

There is a substantial global market for orthopedic implants, but these implants still face the problem of a high failure rate in the short and long term after implantation due to the complex physiological conditions in the body. The use of multifunctional coatings on orthopedic implants has been proposed as an effective way to overcome a range of difficulties. Here, a multifunctional (TA@HA/Lys)_n coating composed of tannic acid (TA), hydroxyapatite (HA), and lysozyme (Lys) was fabricated in a layer-by-layer (LBL) manner, where TA deposited onto HA firmly stuck Lys and HA together. The deposition of TA onto HA, the growth of (TA@HA/Lys)_n, and multiple related biofunctionalities were thoroughly investigated. Our data demonstrated that such a hybrid coating displayed antibacterial and antioxidant effects, and also facilitated the rapid attachment of cells [both mouse embryo osteoblast precursor cells (MC3T3-E1) and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs)] in the early stage and their proliferation over a long period. This accelerated osteogenesis in vitro and promoted bone formation in vivo. We believe that our findings and the developed strategy here could pave the way for multifunctional coatings not only on orthopedic implants, but also for additional applications in catalysts, sensors, tissue engineering, etc.

Preparation of a double-network hydrogel based on wastepaper and its application in the treatment of wastewater containing copper(ii) and methylene blue

To reclaim and utilize wastepaper (WP), a WP/acrylamide double-network hydrogel (WP/PAM) was prepared to transform WP into efficient adsorbent for heavy metals and dye wastewater treatment. The structure and properties of the WP/PAM were characterized systematically by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), swelling performance (SR), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Batch experiments showed that the adsorption process of Cu(ii) and MB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of the WP/PAM for Cu(ii) and MB were 142.2 mg g⁻¹ and 1714.5 mg g⁻¹, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of Cu(ii) on the WP/PAM was related to ion exchange and complexation, while MB adsorption was driven by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. Besides, the WP/PAM performed well in treating simulated wastewater. The regeneration test indicated that the WP/PAM could be successfully reused after 6 cycles. This work provided an alternative choice for the recycling of WP and produced a potential adsorbent for the dye and heavy metals wastewater treatment.

In this research, wastepaper was innovatively compounded with acrylamide to prepare a wastepaper/acrylamide double-network hydrogel and was applied to the treatment of the mixed wastewater containing copper(ii) and methylene blue.
