Abstract
The development of membranes for protein purification has stringent requirement of disinfection resistance, low protein adsorption and anti-fouling, without changing protein structure. In this study, hydrophilic titanium dioxide (TiO2)/calcium alginate (TiO2/CaAlg) hydrogel membranes were prepared by a simple ionic cross-linking method. The effects of the porogenic agent polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentration, the molecular weight of PEG, and the concentration of TiO2 on the filtration properties were systematically investigated. The TiO2/CaAlg membrane exhibited excellent bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection and anti-fouling properties. The mechanical properties and surface energy of the TiO2/CaAlg membrane were significantly improved. The chemical bonding mechanism of TiO2 and NaAlg was investigated by molecular dynamic simulation. The TiO2/CaAlg membrane had good chlorine resistance and could be disinfected or cleaned with sodium hypochlorite. The TiO2/CaAlg hydrogel membrane loaded with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) nanofibers maintained high flux (136.7 L/m2h) and high BSA rejection (98.0 %) at 0.1 MPa. The results of circular dichroism and synchronous fluorescence indicated that the secondary structure of BSA was maintained after membrane separation. This study provides one method for the preparation of green and environmentally friendly membrane for protein purification.

Abstract
In this work, membranes for organic solvents nanofiltration (OSN) based on a natural polymer, sodium alginate, were fabricated. They are chemically stable in organic solvents, including aprotic polar solvents. The unique advantage of these membranes is the absence of toxic reagents and solvents during their production. This ensures the safety and environmental friendliness of the production process. It has been shown that an operation as simple as changing the cation in alginate (Cu2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Al3+, Zn2+, Ca2+) makes it possible to control the transport and separating properties of membranes, depending on the organic solvent being separated. Therefore, to isolate RemazolBrilliant Blue with MM = 626 g·mol-1 from ethanol, membranes based on iron alginate with a rejection R = 97% and a permeability of 1.5 kg·m-2·h-1·bar-1 are the most efficient. For isolation of the same solute from DMF and MP, membranes based on calcium alginate with an R of about 90% and a permeability of 0.1-0.2 kg·m-2·h-1·bar-1 are the most efficient. The resulting membranes based on natural biodegradable sodium alginate are competitive compared to membranes based on synthetic polymers.

Abstract
Abstract
The subsequent activated carbons of resorcinol-formaldehyde xerogels are synthesized and exposed to wide range of gamma irradiation dose. Xerogels and their subsequent activated carbons are characterized by diverse techniques; FTIR, Raman, porosity analysis, SEM, EDX and AFM. The composite membranes are fabricated from polyacrylonitrile and activated carbon xerogels as composite membranes to be utilized in ultrafiltration process of salted oily wastewater. The soybean oil is exploited as organic feeding solution. The results declared that values of flux and rejection reach 157 (L m−2 h−1) and 99.8 (%), respectively. Overall, the best performing composite membrane is conducted by maximizing pure water flux. The optimally synthesized membrane performs well for purification of salted oily wastewater, and a significant increment in permeate flux is obtained with soybean oil rejection is at ∼99.8% and with maximum flux is at 32 (L m−2 h−1). Further, the composite membranes showed good promise for ultrafiltration of salted oily wastewater.

Abstract
Membrane methods, especially pervaporation, are quickly growing up. In line with that, effective membrane materials based on biopolymers are required for the industrially significant mixtures separation. To essentially improve membrane transport characteristics, the application of the surface or/and bulk modifications can be carried out. In the present study, novel dense and supported membranes based on hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)/sodium alginate (SA) were developed for pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol using several approaches: (1) the selection of the optimal ratio of polymers, (2) the introduction of fullerenol in blend polymer matrix, (3) the selection of the optimal cross-linking agent for the membranes, (4) the application of layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolytes on supported membrane surface (poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and PSS/SA). Structural and physicochemical characteristics of the membranes were analyzed by different methods. A cross-linked supported membrane based on HEC/SA/fullerenol (5%) composite possessed the following transport characteristics in pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol (12–50 wt.% water): 0.42–1.72 kg/(m2h) permeation flux, and 77.8–99.99 wt.% water content in the permeate. The surface modification of this membrane with 5 bilayers of PSS/PAH and PSS/SA resulted in the increase of permeation flux up to 0.47–3.0 and 0.46–1.9 kg/(m2h), respectively, with lower selectivity.

Abstract
Novel mixed matrix dense and supported membranes based on biopolymer sodium alginate (SA) modified by fullerenol were developed. Two kinds of SA–fullerenol membranes were investigated: untreated and cross-linked by immersing the dry membranes in 1.25 wt % calcium chloride (CaCl2) in water for 10 min. The structural and physicochemical characteristics features of the SA–fullerenol composite were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic methods, scanning electron (SEM) and atomic force (AFM) microscopies, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and swelling experiments. Transport properties were evaluated in pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol in a wide concentration range. It was found that the developed supported cross-linked SA-5/PANCaCl2 membrane (modified by 5 wt % fullerenol) possessed the best transport properties (the highest permeation fluxes 0.64–2.9 kg/(m2 h) and separation factors 26–73,326) for the pervaporation separation of the water–isopropanol mixture in the wide concentration range (12–90 wt % water) at 22 °C and is suitable for the promising application in industry.

Abstract
A sodium alginate/chitosan solution was prepared by dissolving sodium alginate, chitosan, and glycerol in an acetic acid solution. This solution was then combined with a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose solution and the mixture was cast onto a glass plate and dried at a constant temperature of 60 °C. Then, a carboxymethyl cellulose/sodium alginate/chitosan composite film was obtained by immersing the film in a solution of a cross-linking agent, CaCl2, and air-drying the resulting material. First, the most advantageous contents of the three precursors in the casting solution were determined by a completely random design test method. Thereafter, a comprehensive orthogonal experimental design was applied to select the optimal mass ratio of the three precursors. The composite film obtained with sodium alginate, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and chitosan contents of 1.5%, 0.5%, and 1.5%, respectively, in the casting solution displayed excellent tensile strength, water vapor transmission rate, and elongation after fracture. Moreover, the presence of chitosan successfully inhibited the growth and reproduction of microorganisms. The composite film exhibited antibacterial rates of 95.7% ± 5.4% and 93.4% ± 4.7% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Therefore, the composite film is promising for antibacterial food packaging applications.

Abstract
In this work, we developed hybrid membranes integrated with Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC)/Gum Arabic (GuA) conjugates using crosslinked Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a matrix phase with the addition of PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymer that insured pore formation. At first, the NCC was prepared from microcrystalline cellulose via acid hydrolysis process. The performance property of hybrid NCC/GuA was measured using boron removal. The results showed that the rejection capability enhanced as compared to the control membranes, especially at 0.1wt% of NCC the selectivity is up to 92.4% with the flux rate of 21.3L/m2.h. Moreover, the GuA in NCC/GuA conjugate significantly enhances the antibacterial activity by hindering the bacterial attachment to the surface as both of them carry the negative charge. Also by providing the active sites responsible for hydrogen bonding thus enhancing the hydrophilic character resulted in increased permeation flux rate. Therefore, the NCC/GuA conjugated membranes have great potentials for boron removal.

Abstract
It is highly desirable to develop environmentally friendly processes for fabricating thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) from natural materials. However, the nanofiltration performance of such TFC NFMs is not satisfactory for practical applications owing to the lack of efficient methods for constructing ultrathin, uniform, stable coatings as selective layers. In this study, a contra-diffusion strategy is used to fabricate TFC NFMs with ultrathin cross-linked alginate coatings as selective layers without the use of any organic solvents. The as-prepared NFMs show a water permeation flux that is nearly one order of magnitude higher than that of other alginate-based TFC NFMs with similar salt rejection, and represents the best performance among all TFC NFMs from natural materials. These NFMs also demonstrate excellent mono-/divalent ion selectivity, as well as good long-term operation stability and antifouling properties. Furthermore, this strategy maximizes the reactant usage rate, minimizes the waste discharge and provides new insight into environmentally friendly fabrication of TFC NFMs.

Abstract
A novel crosslinked Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) reverse osmosis (RO) thin film membrane conjugated with Gum Arabic (GA) with superb performance and features was synthesized for water desalination. RO membrane desalination parameters, such as hydrophilicity, surface roughness, water permeability, salt rejection, Chlorine resistance and biofouling resistance were evaluated using a dead end RO filtration unit. The incorporation of Pluronic F127 and the conjugation of Gum Arabic improved the overall RO performance of the membranes. This study has shown that the membrane PVA-GA-5 that contains 0.9wt% Gum Arabic provided excellent permeation, salt rejection, Chlorine and biofouling resistance and mechanical strength. The most remarkable result to arise from this research is that the overall RO performance enhancement has been achieved while utilizing PVA/Gum Arabic as a separation layer without the use of a substrate, which eliminates negative effects associated with the use of a substrate like internal concentration polarization.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of using direct electric current (DC) of 400 mA for five minutes on the physiochemical properties of gelatine (2%, 4%, and 8%), carrageenan (1.5%, 2%, and 2.5%) and sodium alginate (0.75%, 1%, and 1.25%) hydrosols with different sodium chloride concentration. The pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), electrical conductivity (EC), available chlorine concentration (ACC) and rheological parameters were measured. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis were carried out. The results have shown that pH, ORP, EC and ACC values are changed upon applying DC and the magnitude of change depends on the concentration of the polymer and the addition of sodium chloride. After seven days of storage, the ACC of the samples exposed to DC decreased by 88%⁻96%. The FT-IR spectra demonstrated that the structure of gelatine, carrageenan and sodium alginate are not significantly affected by DC. Furthermore, the use of DC did not affect the flow and gelation temperature of the hydrosols. These results suggest that the use of DC did not cause undesirable changes in hydrosols layer and these innovative materials can be used, e.g., for food preservation.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes within the physicochemical properties of gelatine (2%; 4%; 8%), carrageenan (1.5%; 2%; 2.5%) and sodium alginate (0.75%; 1%; 1.25%) hydrogels with different sodium chloride concentrations that were triggered by applying direct current (DC) of 400 mA for a duration of five minutes. There were three types of gels prepared for the purpose of the study: C, control; H, gels on the basis of hydrosols that were treated with DC; and G, gels treated with DC. In the course of the study, the authors carried out the following analyses: Texture Profile Analysis (TPA), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Swelling Ratio (SR). Furthermore, the color and pH of hydrogels were measured. The FTIR spectra showed that the structures of gelatine, carrageenan and sodium alginate do not significantly change upon applying DC. The results of TPA, SR, color and pH measurement indicate that hydrogels' properties are significantly dependent on the type of polymer, its concentration and the type of the gel. By changing those parameters, the characteristics of such gels can be additionally tuned, which extends their applicability, e.g., in the food industry. Moreover, the analysis revealed that SR of H gel gelatine after 72 h of storage was 1.84-times higher than SR of the control sample, which indicated that this gel may be considered as a possible component for wound dressing materials.
