Enhanced separation of monovalent and divalent ions in high salinity wastewater by selective electrodialysis: Experimental investigation and performance prediction. Abstract
To fulfill the industrial requirements of salt fractionation and recovery from saline wastewater, a two-chamber selective electrodialysis (SED) stack incorporating commercial monovalent selective anion exchange membranes was employed and investigated in this study. Three different initial concentration ratios of NaCl/Na2SO4, namely 1:1 (10 g/L:10 g/L), 3:1 (30 g/L:10 g/L), and 5:1 (50 g/L:10 g/L) were examined to simulate various scenarios of saline wastewater. The influence of applied current density on membrane selectivity and overall system efficiency was further evaluated. The results indicated that an increase in the NaCl fraction within the feed solution directly correlates with enhanced concentration and purity of Na2SO4 in the product, achieving purities exceeding 92 %. A lower current density contributed to improved concentration and purity of Na2SO4, whereas higher current densities were conducive to augmenting the concentration and purity of NaCl. Additionally, a linear correlation was observed between the volumetric water transport and NaCl migration. Through numerical simulations, the concentrations of Na2SO4 and NaCl in the effluent were predicted, facilitating a comparative analysis with the salt fractionation efficiency of commercial nanofiltration membranes. Subsequent assessments of energy consumption and current efficiency revealed that the SED system ensured high product concentration and purity at reasonably low energy consumption (0.22-0.28 kWh per kg NaCl) alongside a high current efficiency (83-89 %). These findings offer critical insights into the optimization of salt fractionation process and highlight its economic and technical feasibility for the sustainable management of industrial saline wastewater.

Abstract
The motility behaviors at the individual-cell level and the collective physiological responsive behaviors of aerobic denitrifier, Enterobacter cloacae strain HNR under high salt stress were investigated. The results revealed that as salinity increased, electron transport activity and adenosine triphosphate content decreased from 15.75 μg O2/g/min and 593.51 mM/L to 3.27 μg O2/g/min and 5.34 mM/L, respectively, at 40 g/L, leading to a reduction in the rotation velocity and vibration amplitude of strain HNR. High salinity stress (40 g/L) down-regulated genes involved in ABC transporters (amino acids, sugars, metal ions, and inorganic ions) and activated the biofilm-related motility regulation mechanism in strain HNR, resulting in a further decrease in flagellar motility capacity and an increase in extracellular polymeric substances secretion (4.08 mg/g cell of PS and 40.03 mg/g cell of PN at 40 g/L). These responses facilitated biofilm formation and proved effective in countering elevated salt stress in strain HNR. Moreover, the genetic diversity associated with biofilm-related motility regulation in strain HNR enhanced the adaptability and stability of the strain HNR populations to salinity stress. This study enables a deeper understanding of the response mechanism of aerobic denitrifiers to high salt stress.

Abstract
Nanofiltration (NF) technology is used in the field of water treatment due to its advantages of low energy consumption, high efficiency, and simple process flow. However, the problems of membrane fouling and trade-off (i.e., high flux with low rejection or high rejection with low flux) exist in NF technology, which limit its wide-scale popularization and application. The emphasis of this work is to improve the performance of graphene oxide (GO)-based NF membranes. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and α-Fe2O3 were selected to modify the GO-based membrane by expanding the interlayer spacing and enhancing its antifouling and rejection abilities. Our composite membranes exhibit an increased interlayer spacing of 0.787 nm to 1.1 nm, achieving a high pure water permeation flux of 138.96 Lm-2 h-1, as well as satisfactory rejection rates for salts and dyes (Na2SO4, NaCl, MgCl2, Congo red, and methylene blue). Additionally, the membranes exhibit a relatively good antifouling property. After five cycles of rejection tests, the flux and rejection rate could be recovered to 90 % from 80 % with a 4-h irradiation under visible light. This study provides valuable insights into the development of high-efficiency and advanced NF membranes.

Abstract
Utilizing brackish water resources has imposed a high requirement on the design and construction of nanofiltration membranes. To overcome the limitation of high salt concentration on the nanofiltration separation performance resulting from the weakened Donnan effect, a nanofiltration membrane with the effect of salt-responsive ion valves was developed by incorporating zwitterionic nanospheres into the polyamide layer (PA-ZNs). The interaction between the nanospheres and membranes at high salinity was revealed through a combination analysis from the perspectives of water transport model, positron annihilation spectroscopy, and solute rejection, contributing to the formation of the valve effect. The PA-ZNs membrane presented a breakthrough in overcoming the limitation of increased salt concentrations on nanofiltration separation performance, achieving a high selectivity of 105 for mono/multivalent anions. To reveal the role of the ion valve effect in ion transport through the membrane, the membrane conductance was determined at different salt concentrations, confirming channel-controlled transport at low salinity and ion valve-controlled transport at high salinity. Moreover, the main membrane separation mechanisms were systematically studied. The concept of salt-responsive ion valves may contribute to expanding the application of nanofiltration in brackish water treatment.

Abstract
The article specifies conditions for a nanofiltration process employing a diafiltration method with a constant volume diafiltration (NF-CVD) for exhausted chromium tannery wastewater treatment and describes a mechanism of the examined process carried out for model wastewater. The authors prove that a decrease in salt concentration in the NF-CVD process is an important factor that enables effective concentration of chromium. Based on the proposed chromium separation and concentration mechanisms, it was found that this effect may be achieved by (1) limiting the formation of an ionic adsorption-polarization layer and (2) reducing the increase in the osmotic pressure caused by a change in the separation properties of the membrane. The article shows that in the analyzed system a higher amount of the solvent introduced at the diafiltration stage and a lower process pressure that ensures a reduction in salt retention translate to a high level of salt removal. In regenerates, after the NF-CVD processes in which at least the same volume of a washing diluent as the volume of the retentate after the pre-concentration step was used, salt concentration below 10 g L-1 and chromium concentration about three times higher than in the case of the feed solution were obtained. Therefore, the proposed solution implements the circular economy strategy in the tannery.

Abstract
Fast permeation and effective solute-solute separation provide the opportunities for sustainable water treatment, but they are hindered by ineffective membranes. We present here the construction of a nanofiltration membrane with fast permeation, high rejection, and precise Cl-/SO42- separation by spatial and temporal control of interfacial polymerization via graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The g-C3N4 nanosheet binds preferentially with piperazine and tiles the water-hexane interface as revealed by molecular dynamics studies, thus lowering the diffusion rate of PIP by one order of magnitude and restricting its diffusion pathways towards the hexane phase. As a result, membranes with nanoscale ordered hollow structure are created. Transport mechanism across the structure is clarified using computational fluid dynamics simulation. Increased surface area, lower thickness, and a hollow ordered structure are identified as the key contributors to the water permeance of 105 L m2·h-1·bar-1 with a Na2SO4 rejection of 99.4% and a Cl-/SO42- selectivity of 130, which is superior to state-of-the-art NF membranes. Our approach for tuning the membrane microstructure enables the development of ultra-permeability and excellent selectivity for ion-ion separation, water purification, desalination, and organics removal.

Abstract
The presence of organic impurities hinders the resource utilization of industrial waste salt (IWS). In this study, pyrolysis treatment was chosen to remove these organic impurities. The optimal process parameters for the pyrolysis of organic impurities were as follows: a temperature of 500 °C and a holding time of 20 min. Under these optimal conditions, the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate was 96.32%, inducing a decrease in the TOC mass fraction from 1.88 to 0.08%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results obtained during this process showed that prolonging the pyrolysis time (10-70 min) for IWS resulted in a gradual decrease in the relative content of characteristic functional group, such as C-O in ether groups, and the disappearance of functional group, such as benzophenone carbonyl group and ester carbonyl. Organic impurities can release gas-containing compounds that destroy the initially smooth IWS surface, and the resulting particles with rough and irregular shapes fuse into large or lumpy particles during the pyrolysis process. GC‒MS results clearly showed that the number of different semivolatile organic compounds in the IWS was reduced from 35 to 19 as a result of the pyrolysis process. Correspondingly, organic impurities with molecular formulas containing 5-10 carbon atoms converted into compounds containing 6-20 carbon atoms. These findings provide theoretical support for IWS resource utilization.

Abstract
In the last few years, many industrial sectors have generated and discharged large volumes of saline wastewater into the environment. In the present work, the electrochemical removal of nitrogen compounds from synthetic saline wastewater was investigated through a lab-scale experimental reactor. Experiments were carried out to examine the impacts of the operational parameters, such as electrolyte composition and concentration, applied current intensity, and initial ammoniacal nitrogen concentration, on the total nitrogen removal efficiency. Using NaCl as an electrolyte, the NTOT removal was higher than Na2SO4 and NaClO4; however, increasing the initial NaCl concentration over 250 mg·L-1 resulted in no benefits for the NTOT removal efficiency. A rise in the current intensity from 0.05 A to 0.15 A resulted in an improvement in NTOT removal. Nevertheless, a further increase to 0.25 A led to basically no enhancement of the efficiency. A lower initial ammoniacal nitrogen concentration resulted in higher removal efficiency. The highest NTOT removal (about 75%) was achieved after 90 min of treatment operating with a NaCl concentration of 250 mg·L-1 at an applied current intensity of 0.15 A and with an initial ammoniacal nitrogen concentration of 13 mg·L-1. The nitrogen degradation mechanism proposed assumes a series-parallel reaction system, with a first step in which NH4+ is in equilibrium with NH3. Moreover, the nitrogen molar balance showed that the main product of nitrogen oxidation was N2, but NO3- was also detected. Collectively, electrochemical treatment is a promising approach for the removal of nitrogen compounds from impacted saline wastewater.

Abstract
The separation of chloride and sulphate is important for the treatment of high salt wastewater, and monovalent selective electrodialysis (MSED) has advantages in terms of energy consumption and pre-treatment costs compared to nanofiltration salt separation. Most of the research on monovalent anion-selective membranes (MASM) is still on a laboratory scale due to the preparation process, cost, and other reasons. In this study, a low-cost, easy-to-operate modification scheme was used to prepare MASM, which was applied to assemble a pilot-scale electrodialysis device to treat reverse osmosis concentrated water with a salt content of 4% to 5%. The results indicate that the optimum operating conditions for the device are: 250 L/h influent flow rate for the concentration and dilute compartments, 350 L/h influent flow rate for the electrode compartment and a constant voltage of 20 V. The separation effect of the pilot electrodialysis plant at optimal operating conditions was: the Cl− and SO42− transmission rates of 80% and 2.54% respectively, the separation efficiency (S) of 93.85% and the Energy consumption per unit of NaCl (ENaCl) of 0.344 kWh/kg. The analysis of the variation of the three parameters of selective separation performance during electrodialysis indicates that the separation efficiency (S) is a suitable parameter for measuring the selective separation performance of the device compared to the monovalent selectivity coefficient (PSO42−Cl−).

Abstract
Herein, we attempted to apply an alumina-based bimetallic (Mn-Ce) catalyst as an O3 activator and explored the feasibility of the treatment of hypersaline organic wastewater. Compared with independent O3 (35.00 ± 4.20%), mineralization of ciprofloxacin (CIP) under the Mn-CeOx@γ-Al2O3/O3 (MCAO) process was elevated to 76.04 ± 2.30%. The synergetic corporation among multivalence redox pairs of Mn (III)/Mn (IV), Ce (III)/Ce (IV) promoted the protonation of the surface hydroxyl group (S-OH2+), and subsequently the dominant reactive oxygen species in the MCAO process, OH and O2-, were generated rapidly. However, the mineralization of CIP decreased in MCAO/SO42- system due to the formation of SO4-, which reacted with CIP more slowly (8.4 × 108 M-1 s-1) than OH (4.1 × 109 M-1 s-1). In MCAO/SO42-/Cl- mixture saline conditions, mineralization of CIP was improved at low Cl- concentration (0.5 wt%) due to the generation of Cl, while inhibited with excessive Cl- (≥1.5 wt%) owing to the formation of residual chlorides (Cl2, Cl2- and ClO-). Meanwhile, the MCAO process possessed promising capability to remediate hypersaline wastewater containing dyes, phenol and pesticides, as well as actual salinity-rich wastewater. Based on the above, the present study would provide new insights into hypersaline organic wastewater treatment by the MCAO process.

Abstract
This work presents a novel concept for the integration of closed-circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) technology and solvent-based precipitation as a means of producing an exceptional quality of water by separating the salts especially chlorides and sulphates from highly saline nanofiltration (NF) rejected stream of the steel industry. The NF rejected stream was extremely concentrated with salts like chloride (1560 mg/L), sulphate (4212 mg/L), manganese (28 mg/L), sodium (418 mg/L) and total dissolved solids (TDS), as high as 8100 mg/L, which are well above the permissible limit for surface discharge. The outcome of this work showed that reverse osmosis (RO) with continuous brine recycling achieved excellent desalination performance. Miscible organic solvents such as diisopropylamine (DIIPA), isopropylamine (IPA), and ethylamine (EA) were found to be effective in precipitating chloride and sulphate ions from highly concentrated RO brine. The overall removal efficiency of sulphate and chloride was found to be 99.88% and 91%, respectively. Preliminary treatment cost was estimated and found to be around 7.35 $/m3. The treated water can either be recycled in the system or safely released into the environment. The readers of this research article will be benefitted by gaining a thorough understanding of the treatment of concentrated brine from nanofiltration using an integrated RO-precipitation technique.

Abstract
Membrane technology, especially nanofiltration (NF) has great attention to provide an imperative solution for water issues. The membrane is considered to be the heart in the separation plant. Understanding the membrane characteristics could allow predicting and optimizing the membrane performance namely flux, rejection and reduced fouling. The membrane development using biomaterials and nanomaterials provides a remarkable opportunity in the water application. This review focuses on the membrane characteristics of biomaterials and nanomaterials based nanofiltration. In this review, recent researches based on biomaterials and nanomaterials loaded membrane for salt rejection have been analyzed. Membrane fouling depends on the membrane characteristics and this review defined fouling as a ubiquitous bottleneck challenge that hampers the NF blooming applications. Fouling mitigation strategies via membrane modification using biomaterial (chitosan, curcumin and vanillin) and various other nanomaterials are critically reviewed. This review also highlights the membrane cleaning and focuses on concentrates disposal methods with zero liquid discharge system for resource recovery. Finally, the conclusion and future prospects of membrane technology are discussed. From this current review, it is apparent that the biomaterial and various other nanomaterials acquire exclusive properties that facilitate membrane advancement with improved capability for water treatment. Regardless of membrane material developments, still exist considerable difficulties in membrane commercialization. Thus, additional studies related to this field are needed to produce membranes with better performance for large‒scale applications.

Abstract
Nanofiltration plays an increasingly large role in many industrial applications, such as water treatment (e.g., desalination, water softening, and fluoride removal) and resource recovery (e.g., alkaline earth metals). Energy consumption and benefits of nanofiltration processes are directly determined by the selectivity of the nanofiltration membranes, which is largely governed by pore-size distribution and Donnan effects. During operation, the separation performance of unmodified nanofiltration membranes will also be impacted (deleteriously) upon unavoidable membrane fouling. Many efforts, therefore, have been directed toward enhancing the selectivity of nanofiltration membranes, which can be classified into membrane fabrication method improvement and process intensification. This review summarizes recent developments in the field and provides guidance for potential future approaches to improve the selectivity of nanofiltration membranes.

Transport Models of Ammonium Nitrogen in Wastewater from Rare Earth Smelteries by Reverse Osmosis Membranes. SUSTAINABILITY 2020. Abstract
Wastewater from rare earth smelteries contains large amounts of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), which causes severe environmental problems. In this contribution, the desalination efficiency of reverse osmosis (RO) was investigated in the treatment of NH4Cl or NaCl solutions from 0.1 to 40 g/L under different operating pressures with a commercial RO membrane. Experimental results showed that when an operating pressure above 30 bar is applied to the 5 g/L NH4Cl solution, the permeate was found to meet the discharge standards of NH4+-N. Compared to NH4Cl, the permeate fluxes of NaCl solutions were higher due to the higher net driving force and lower propensity to membrane fouling. Theoretical models indicate a linear relationship between water flux and the net driving force for both NH4Cl and NaCl solutions. On the contrary, a power function between the salt flux and concentration difference correlated well with the experimental data for salt transport. The equations for water and salt transport obtained by this work would provide a facile and practical means for predicting the membrane performance in design and optimization of RO processes for the treatment of wastewater from the rare earth industry.

Abstract
The sequential combination of nanofiltration (NF) and ettringite precipitation to manage sulfate-rich brine is proposed. In this study, NF experiments clearly demonstrated that sulfate-containing wastewater was effectively concentrated by the NF process (concentrate factor, CF > 5) with insignificant membrane fouling. Ettringite precipitation was implemented as an alternative to lime precipitation to process sulfate-rich brine resulting from the NF operation. More than 93% of the sulfate ions were removed by ettringite precipitation, whereas lime precipitation removed less than 28% under the same conditions due to the difference in their solubility. However, with highly concentrated NF brine (CF > 5), the pH and sulfate concentration of the supernatant were higher than the discharge limit. Therefore, optional blending of the supernatant after ettringite precipitation with the NF permeate was proposed to satisfy the discharge limit for sulfate. The sequential operation consisting of NF and ettringite precipitation enables sulfate-rich wastewater to be treated effectively, minimizing its negative impact by reducing the brine volume and enabling the water to be reused.

Abstract
Reuse of wastewater, as well as recovery of valuable, toxic or harmful products in industrial discharges, still represents an important issue, not only because it reduces the effect on receiving water bodies, but also because of the economic resources it represents for industry itself. In this research, in situ regeneration of Mn2SO4 is evaluated, for its reuse as the main raw material in the original process of a fungicide plant. The regeneration is evaluated by selective recovery of Mn2+, Zn2+ and SO4 = present in the wastewater produced by the industrial plant, and utilizing nanofiltration, electro-electrodialysis and chemical precipitation as separation alternatives. Each alternative was designed and evaluated technically and economically through simulations in Aspen Plus®, with data and information of the real process supplied by the company. Because zinc concentration is relatively low, its selective recovery was not attractive. The resulting Mn2SO4 solution and treated water quality in conventional alternatives were significantly poor with high costs. In contrast, nanofiltration and electro-electrodialysis alternatives generate water and by-products of higher quality and reuse potential with significantly lower costs. However, their viability depends on the membrane performance. The results were satisfactory, but future experimental studies are required to optimize the alternatives and define the correct pretreatment process.

Abstract
Hybrid electrocatalytic ozonation is an efficient method for degrading high-salinity organic wastewater that has excellent oxidation ability and is environmentally friendly. Furthermore, the high salt content of the wastewater provides electrolyte to support the process, which avoids secondary pollution caused by the addition of electrolyte. In this work, Ni0.2-Ce0.2/ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC)/granular active carbon (GAC) particle electrodes with a Ni:Ce weight ratio of 1:1 were synthesized using a simple method. The electrodes were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, as well as other techniques. The catalytic performance was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance. Higher reduction and oxidation peak currents were obtained with the Ni0.2-Ce0.2/OMC catalyst than with Ni0.2/OMC or Ce0.2/OMC, indicating that the bimetallic catalyst has higher activity for the reduction of O2 to H2O2 and the oxidation of O3 to ·OH. The order of the k values-which represent the mass-transfer rate-was Ni0.2-Ce0.2/OMC (0.157) > Ni0.2/OMC (0.017) > Ce0.2/OMC (0.014). The results show that cooperation between Ni, Ce, and OMC promoted the dispersion of Ni and Ce and improved the catalytic performance. Ni0.2-Ce0.2/OMC enhances the catalytic reduction of O2 to H2O2, and, in addition, Ce is able to rapidly store and release oxygen through Ce3+/Ce4+ conversions and reacting with O3 to generate ·OH, which increases the oxidation capacity of the material. Under the optimal conditions the chemical oxygen demand removal for high-salinity organic wastewater using Ni0.2-Ce0.2/OMC/GAC particle electrodes reached 93.7%.

Abstract
This study aimed to fabricate new and effective material for the efficiency of phosphate adsorption. Two types of adsorbent materials, the zirconium hydroxides embedded in pomegranate peel (Zr/Peel) and zirconium-lanthanum hydroxides embedded in pomegranate peel (Zr-La/Peel) were developed. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were evaluated to give insight into the physicochemical properties of these adsorbents. Zr-La/Peel exceeded the adsorption efficiency of Zr/Peel adsorbents in batch adsorption experiments at the same pH level. The peel as a host can strive to have a strong "shielding effect" to increase the steadiness of the entrenched Zr and La elements. La and Zr are hydroxide metals that emit many hydrogen ions during the hydrolysis reaction, which contribute to protonation and electrostatic attraction. The highest adsorption capacity of La-Zr/Peel for phosphate was calculated to be 40.21 mg/g, and pseudo second-order equation is very well fitted for kinetic adsorption. Phosphate adsorption efficiency was reduced by an increase of pH. With the background of coexisting Cl-, little effect on adsorption efficiency was observed, while adsorption capacities were reduced by almost 20-30% with the coexistence of [Formula: see text] , [Formula: see text] and humic acid (HA).

Abstract
Water resources are becoming scarce meaning that reuse options are receiving more and more attention. In this perspective, zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) is considered as an emerging technique to minimize waste, recover resources, treat toxic industrial waste streams, and mitigate potential water quality impacts in receiving water streams. Although ZLD systems are capable of minimizing contamination of water sources and amplifying water supply, its industrial scale applications are restricted due to their high cost and intensive energy consumption. In ZLD systems, membrane-based technologies are an attractive future strategy for industrial wastewater reclamation. Therefore, this review examines why a greater focus on environmental protection and water security is leading to more widespread adoption of ZLD technology in various industries. We highlight existing ZLD processing schemes, including thermal and membrane-based processes, and discuss their limitations and potential solutions. We also investigated global application of ZLD systems for resource recovery from wastewater. Finally, we discuss the potential environmental impacts of ZLD technologies and provide some focus on future research needs.

Abstract
The selective extraction and concentration of salt from coal gasification brine (CGB) by nanofiltration membranes is a promising technology to achieve near-zero liquid discharge of coal gasification wastewater. To investigate the feasibility of recovery of salts and the interaction of organic compounds, multivalent ions and monovalent ions on the rejection ratio, three nanofiltration membranes (OWNF1, NF270 and Desal-5 DK) with an 1812 spiral-wound module were used in crossflow filtration. The rejection mechanism was analyzed by comparing the rejection performance as a function of the operation pressure (increasing from 1.0 MPa to 2.5 MPa), the concentration (increasing from 10,000 mg/L to 25,000 mg/L) and pH values (increasing from 3.0 to 10.0). The concentrations of anions and cations were determined using an ion chromatographic analyzer and an inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer, respectively. The results show that the rejection of sulfate and the chemical oxygen demand were higher than 92.12% and 78.84%, respectively, at appropriate operation, while negative rejection of chloride was observed in the CGB. The decreasing rejection of organic compounds was due to swelling of the membrane pore in high-concentration solutions. Meanwhile, the organic compounds weakened the negative charge of the membrane active layer, consequently decreasing the ion rejection. More than 85% of the sodium chloride could be recovered, indicating that this technology is suitable for resource recovery from CGB and near-zero liquid discharge of coal gasification industry.

Abstract
Over the years, different types of alternative technologies have been developed and used for palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment. Specifically, membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been employed to relegate pollutants contained in POME under different operating conditions, and the technology was found to be promising. The major challenge impeding the wider application of this technology is membrane fouling, which usually attracts high operating energy and running cost. In this regard, novel methods of mitigating membrane fouling through the treatment processes have been developed. Therefore, this review article specifically focuses on the recent treatment processes of POME using MBR, with particular emphasis on innovative processes conditions such as aerobic, anaerobic, and hybrid processing as well as their performance in relation to fouling minimization. Furthermore, the effects of sonication and thermophilic and mesophilic conditions on membrane blockage were critically reviewed. The types of foulants and fouling mechanism as influenced by different operating conditions were also analyzed censoriously.
