Corporate strategies in agricultural enterprises: Adaptation and development in the СOVID-crisis environment

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on changes in agricultural enterprise corporate strategies. The study also aims to identify their potential implications in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic's spread. The most important research method is monitoring. The results of monitoring reflect the efficiency of agricultural production processes before and during the COVID-19 crisis. The studied country exemplifies agricultural business development under favorable natural resource conditions. In the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the corporate strategies of Kazakhstan's five largest agricultural enterprises were analyzed. The materials for the analysis were the databases of these enterprises' official websites. The analysis rested on a forecasting model based on a trend line. The results suggest that the efforts to adapt corporate strategies to the COVID-19 imperatives aim to balance and restore the economic activity of agricultural enterprises. This task requires strategies for reducing secondary costs, investing in high-growth areas, micro supply chains, and management system transformation. In practice, the findings can be useful for policymakers and managers in the agricultural sector of the economy. The study presents additional information on how to better support agricultural enterprises during and after the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Synergies in stem cell research: Integrating technologies, strategies, and bionanomaterial innovations

Since the 1960 s, there has been a substantial amount of research directed towards investigating the biology of several types of stem cells, including embryonic stem cells, brain cells, and mesenchymal stem cells. In contemporary times, a wide array of stem cells has been utilized to treat several disorders, including bone marrow transplantation. In recent years, stem cell treatment has developed as a very promising and advanced field of scientific research. The progress of therapeutic methodologies has resulted in significant amounts of anticipation and expectation. Recently, there has been a notable proliferation of experimental methodologies aimed at isolating and developing stem cells, which have emerged concurrently. Stem cells possess significant vitality and exhibit vigorous proliferation, making them suitable candidates for in vitro modification. This article examines the progress made in stem cell isolation and explores several methodologies employed to promote the differentiation of stem cells. This study also explores the method of isolating bio-nanomaterials and discusses their viewpoint in the context of stem cell research. It also covers the potential for investigating stem cell applications in bioprinting and the usage of bionanomaterial in stem cell-related technologies and research. Water pollution control and revitalization using advanced technologies: Uncovering artificial intelligence options towards environmental health protection, sustainability and water security

In Ghana, illegal mining (galamsey) activities have polluted most of the river bodies. For example, water bodies in Ghana that are polluted amounts to 60% with most of them in deteriorating condition. However, to live a sustainable life, there is the need to follow rules of environmental management, where pollution control and advanced treatment technologies are imperative. The adoption of control strategies and advanced technologies in galamsey-affected-water basins in Ghana will help provide real-time revitalization for supply of quality water. The control strategies for water pollution management and advanced technologies would particularly help utility companies in ensuring that all Ghanaians continue to get potable, reliable, and sustainable water supplies for the current and future generations. The paper covers three key control strategies for water pollution management, vis-à-vis six major aspects of advanced technologies and the use of artificial intelligence (AI). AI based decision-making tools help optimize the use of various treatment technologies, such as adsorption, ion exchanges, electrokinetic processes, chemical precipitation, phytobial remediation, and membrane technology to effectively remove pollutants from affected water bodies. The paper also focuses on advantages and disadvantages of several advanced technologies, challenges on leveraging the technologies while identifying gaps, and possible technology roadmap. The review contributes to water quality issues in Ghana's Pra river basin by embracing AI and other cutting-edge technologies to address the current water pollution crisis and also ensure sustainable and secure water supply for future generations. This contribution is in line with the United Nations' Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals' (SDGs) goal 6 (clean water and sanitation) and goal 3 (good health and well-being).

Biohydrogen production from microalgae for environmental sustainability

Hydrogen as a clean energy that is conducive to energy and environmental sustainability, playing a significant role in the alleviation of global climate change and energy crisis. Biohydrogen generation from microalgae has been reported as a highly attractive approach that can produce a benign clean energy carrier to achieve carbon neutrality and bioenergy sustainability. Thus, this review explored the mechanism of biohydrogen production from microalgae containing direct biophotolysis, indirect biophotolysis, photo fermentation, and dark fermentation. In general, dark fermentation of microalgae for biohydrogen production is relatively better than photo fermentation, biophotolysis, and microbial electrolysis, because it is able to consecutively generate hydrogen and is not reliant on energy supplied by natural sunlight. Besides, this review summarized potential algal strains for hydrogen production focusing on green microalgae and cyanobacteria. Moreover, a thorough review process was conducted to present hydrogen-producing enzymes targeting biosynthesis and localization of enzymes in microalgae. Notably, the most powerful hydrogen-producing enzymes are [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenases, which have an activity nearly 10-100 times better than [Ni-Fe]-hydrogenases and 1000 times better than nitrogenases. In addition, this work highlighted the major factors affecting low energy conversion efficiency and oxygen sensitivity of hydrogen-producing enzymes. Noting that the most practical pathway of biohydrogen generation was sulfur-deprivation compared with phosphorus, nitrogen, and magnesium deficiency. Further discussions in this work summarized the recent advancement in biohydrogen production from microalgae such as genetic engineering, microalgae-bacteria consortium, electro-bio-hydrogenation, and nanomaterials for developing enzyme stability and hydrolytic efficiency. More importantly, this review provided a summary of current limitations and future perspectives on the sustainable production of biohydrogen from microalgae.

This paper discusses the significant benefits of Dentistry 4.0 technologies for the smart education platform and dentistry treatment. Finally, this article identifies twenty significant enhancements in dental education and effective care platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic by employing Dentistry 4.0 technologies. Thus, proper implementation of these technologies will improve the process efficiency in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dentistry 4.0 technologies drive innovations to improve the quality of internet-connected healthcare devices. It creates automation and exchanges data to make a smart health care system. Therefore, helps better healthcare services, planning, monitoring, teaching, learning, treatment, and innovation capability. These technologies moved to smart transportation systems in the hospital during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Modern manufacturing technologies create digital transformation in manufacturing, optimises the operational processes and enhances productivity.

Comprehensive account of present techniques for in-field plant disease diagnosis

The early detection of plant pathogens is an appropriate preventive strategy for the management of crop yield and quality. For this reason, effective diagnostic techniques and tools, which are simple, specific, rapid and economic, are needed to be developed. Although several such technologies have been developed still most of them suffer one or the other limitation. Major limitations of the widely used diagnostic methods are requirement of trained staff and laboratory setup. Development of point-of-care diagnostic devices (handy portable devices) that require no specialized staff and can directly be used in fields is need of the hour. The aim of this review is to compile the information on current promising techniques that are in use for plant-pathogen diagnosis. Additionally, it focuses on the latest in-field pathogen diagnostic techniques with associated advantages and limitations.

African Environmental Ethics: Keys to Sustainable Development Through Agroecological Villages

This essay proposes African-based ethical solutions to profound human problems and a working African model to address those problems. The model promotes sustainability through advanced agroecological and information communication technologies. The essay's first section reviews the ethical ground of that model in the work of the Senegalese scholar, Cheikh Anta Diop. The essay's second section examines an applied African model for translating African ethical speculation into practice. Deeply immersed in European and African ethics, Godfrey Nzamujo developed the Songhaï Centers to solve the problem of rural poverty in seventeen African countries. Harnessing advanced technologies within a holistic agroecological ecosystem, Nzamujo's villages furnish education spanning the fields of ethics, information communication technology, microbiology, international development, and mechanical, electrical, civil and biological engineering in a community-based and centered development enterprise. The essay proposes a global consortium of ecovillages based on Nzamujo's model. The final section explores funding methods for the consortium. The conclusion contemplates a return to Africa to supplement environmental ethics that enhance life's future on earth.

Anaerobic biodegradation of phenol in wastewater treatment: achievements and limits

Anaerobic biodegradation of toxic compounds found in industrial wastewater is an attractive solution allowing the recovery of energy and resources but it is still challenging due to the low kinetics making the anaerobic process not competitive against the aerobic one. In this review, we summarise the present state of knowledge on the anaerobic biodegradation process for phenol, a typical target compound employed in toxicity studies on industrial wastewater treatment. The objective of this article is to provide an overview on the microbiological and technological aspects of anaerobic phenol degradation and on the research needs to fill the gaps still hindering the diffusion of the anaerobic process. The first part is focused on the microbiology and extensively presents and characterises phenol-degrading bacteria and biodegradation pathways. In the second part, dedicated to process feasibility, anaerobic and aerobic biodegradation kinetics are analysed and compared, and strategies to enhance process performance, i.e. advanced technologies, bioaugmentation, and biostimulation, are critically analysed and discussed. The final section provides a summary of the research needs. Literature data analysis shows the feasibility of anaerobic phenol biodegradation at laboratory and pilot scale, but there is still a consistent gap between achieved aerobic and anaerobic performance. This is why current research demand is mainly related to the development and optimisation of powerful technologies and effective operation strategies able to enhance the competitiveness of the anaerobic process. Modern epigenetics methods in biological research

The definition of epigenetics refers that molecular modifications on DNA that can regulate gene activity are independent of DNA sequence and mitotically stable. Notably, epigenetics studies have grown exponentially in the past few years. Recent progresses that lead to exciting discoveries and groundbreaking nature of this area demand thorough methodologies and advanced technologies to move epigenetics to the forefront of molecular biology. The most recognized epigenetic regulations are DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). This review will discuss the modern techniques that are available to detect locus-specific and genome-wide changes for all epigenetic codes. Furthermore, updated analysis of technologies, newly developed methods, recent breakthroughs and bioinformatics pipelines in epigenetic analysis will be presented. These methods, as well as many others presented in this specific issue, provide comprehensive guidelines in the area of epigenetics that facilitate further developments in this promising and rapidly developing field.

Partially aminated acrylic acid grafted activated carbon as inexpensive shale hydration inhibitor

In this work, we report the preparation of a novel partially aminated and inexpensive water-soluble acrylic acid grafted activated carbon represented as C-g-AA-NH₂ for efficient inhibition of shale hydration. The as-prepared C-AA-NH₂ was subjected to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). This was followed by an evaluation of the capability of the material to inhibit shale through various tests including anti-swelling, shale recovery, and immersion tests. Our results indicated that 2% of C-g-AA-NH₂ drastically reduced water invasion into shale by combining plugging property of the core-centered carbon nanoparticles with the inhibition ability of the partially aminated acrylic acid component by adsorption on the clay surface through hydrogen bonding. In this manner, the plugging of the pore throat of the interlayer spacing of the shale formation could easily be achieved. This approach could significantly control fluid loss, reduce permeability and filtrate volume of drilling mud by forming a thin film on the formation surface due to the nano-nature of the carbon component of the polymer.

Mesenchymal stem cell 3D encapsulation technologies for biomimetic microenvironment in tissue regeneration

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) encapsulation technique has long been emerged in tissue engineering as it plays an important role in implantation of stem cells to regenerate a damaged tissue. MSC encapsulation provides a mimic of a three-dimensional (3D) in vivo environment to maintain cell viability and to induce the stem cell differentiation which regulates MSC fate into multi-lineages. Moreover, the 3D matrix surrounding MSCs protects them from the human innate immune system and allows the diffusion of biomolecules such as oxygen, cytokines, and growth factors. Therefore, many technologies are being developed to create MSC encapsulation platforms with diverse materials, shapes, and sizes. The conditions of the platform are determined by the targeted tissue and translation method. This review introduces several details of MSC encapsulation technologies such as micromolding, electrostatic droplet extrusion, microfluidics, and bioprinting and their application for tissue regeneration. Lastly, some of the challenges and future direction of MSC encapsulation technologies as a cell therapy-based tissue regeneration method will be discussed.

Biomarkers for cystic fibrosis drug development

PURPOSE

To provide a review of the status of biomarkers in cystic fibrosis drug development, including regulatory definitions and considerations, a summary of biomarkers in current use with supportive data, current gaps, and future needs.

METHODS

Biomarkers are considered across several areas of CF drug development, including cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator modulation, infection, and inflammation.

RESULTS

Sweat chloride, nasal potential difference, and intestinal current measurements have been standardized and examined in the context of multicenter trials to quantify CFTR function. Detection and quantification of pathogenic bacteria in CF respiratory cultures (e.g.: Pseudomonas aeruginosa) are commonly used in early phase antimicrobial clinical trials, and to monitor safety of therapeutic interventions. Sputum (e.g.: neutrophil elastase, myeloperoxidase, calprotectin) and blood biomarkers (e.g.: C reactive protein, calprotectin, serum amyloid A) have had variable success in detecting response to inflammatory treatments.

CONCLUSIONS

Biomarkers are used throughout the drug development process in CF, and many have been used in early phase clinical trials to provide proof of concept, detect drug bioactivity, and inform dosing for later-phase studies. Advances in the precision of current biomarkers, and the identification of new biomarkers with 'omics-based technologies, are needed to accelerate CF drug development.

Status of hormones and painkillers in wastewater effluents across several European states-considerations for the EU watch list concerning estradiols and diclofenac

Present technologies for wastewater treatment do not sufficiently address the increasing pollution situation of receiving water bodies, especially with the growing use of personal care products and pharmaceuticals (PPCP) in the private household and health sector. The relevance of addressing this problem of organic pollutants was taken into account by the Directive 2013/39/EU that introduced (i) the quality evaluation of aquatic compartments, (ii) the polluter pays principle, (iii) the need for innovative and affordable wastewater treatment technologies, and (iv) the identification of pollution causes including a list of principal compounds to be monitored. In addition, a watch list of 10 other substances was recently defined by Decision 2015/495 on March 20, 2015. This list contains, among several recalcitrant chemicals, the painkiller diclofenac and the hormones 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol. Although some modern approaches for their removal exist, such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), retrofitting most wastewater treatment plants with AOPs will not be acceptable as consistent investment at reasonable operational cost. Additionally, by-product and transformation product formation has to be considered. The same is true for membrane-based technologies (nanofiltration, reversed osmosis) despite of the incredible progress that has been made during recent years, because these systems lead to higher operation costs (mainly due to higher energy consumption) so that the majority of communities will not easily accept them. Advanced technologies in wastewater treatment like membrane bioreactors (MBR) that integrate biological degradation of organic matter with membrane filtration have proven a more complete elimination of emerging pollutants in a rather cost- and labor-intensive technology. Still, most of the presently applied methods are incapable of removing critical compounds completely. In this opinion paper, the state of the art of European WWTPs is reflected, and capacities of single methods are described. Furthermore, the need for analytical standards, risk assessment, and economic planning is stressed. The survey results in the conclusion that combinations of different conventional and advanced technologies including biological and plant-based strategies seem to be most promising to solve the burning problem of polluting our environment with hazardous emerging xenobiotics.
