Spectroscopic and modeling investigation of efficient removal of U(VI) on a novel magnesium silicate/diatomite

Zeolitic Imidazole Framework (ZIF)-Sponge Composite for Highly Efficient U(VI) Elimination

Herein, a zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF-67) composite was prepared by a rapid, simple and inexpensive situ hybridization technique applying polyurethane sponge (PU) as support, which was designated as ZIF-67-PU. The ZIF-67 nanoparticle was successfully supported on the surface of sponge skeletons mainly through electrostatic attraction as well as probable π-π stacking interactions with PAM modification of the sponge. The resultant ZIF-67-PU exhibited a remarkably enhanced U(VI) elimination capacity of 150.86 mg∙g-1 on the basis of the Langmuir isotherm model, in comparison to pristine sponge. Additionally, the mechanism for U(VI) elimination was mainly achieved through the complex reaction between C-N(H)/-OH groups in ZIF-67 and U(VI), based on XPS investigations. ZIF-67-PU represents a simple, feasible and low-cost disposal option for preparing ZIF-coated sponges of any shape that can enhance the U(VI) elimination capacity. Furthermore, this approach can be widely applied to the preparation of various kinds of MOF-sponges through this situ hybridization technique.

Statistically and visually analyzing the latest advancements and future trends of uranium removal

Uranium contamination and remediation is a very important environmental research area. Removing radioactive and toxic uranium from contaminated media requires fundamental knowledge of targets and materials. To explore the-State-of-the-Art in uranium contamination control, we employed a statistical tool called CiteSpace to visualize and statistically analyze 4203 peer-reviewed papers on uranium treatment published between 2008 and 2022. The primary content presentations of visual analysis were co-authorships, co-citations, keyword co-occurrence analysis with cluster analysis, which could offer purposeful information of research hots and trends in the field of uranium removal. The statistical analysis results indicated that studies on uranium removal have focused on adsorption of uranium from aqueous solution. From 2008 to 2022, biochar and biological treatment were firstly used to sequester uranium, then adsorption for uranium removal dominates with adsorbents of graphene oxide, primary nanofiber magnetic polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In recent years, photocatalysts and metal-organic frameworks are expected to be two of the most popular research topics. In addition, we further highlighted the characteristics and applications of MOFs and GOs in uranium removal. Overall, a statistical review was proposed to visualize and summarize the knowledge and research trends regarding uranium treatment.

Significance of MOF adsorbents in uranium remediation from water

Uranium is considered as one of the most perilous radioactive contaminants in the aqueous environment. It has shown detrimental effects on both flora and fauna and because of its toxicities on human beings, therefore its exclusion from the aqueous environment is very essential. The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an adsorbent for the removal of uranium from the aqueous environment could be a good approach. MOFs possess unique properties like high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, etc. This makes them promising adsorbents for the removal of uranium from contaminated water. In this paper, sources of uranium in the water environment, human health disorders, and application of the different types of MOFs as well as the mechanisms of uranium removal have been discussed meticulously.

Insight into the Corrosion Inhibition Mechanism of Sodium Silicate on the Magnesium Alloy Surface: Experimental and Theoretical Calculations

The corrosion inhibition mechanism of sodium silicate (SS) for WE43 magnesium alloy in NaCl solution was investigated by in situ observation, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), electrochemical test, and theoretical calculations. In situ observation showed that local corrosion was markedly inhibited after the addition of the SS inhibitor. Electrochemical data revealed that a protective layer was formed on the metal/solution interface and an optimum inhibition efficiency of 98.3% in the case of 2.5 g/L SS. A uniform magnesium silicate layer with a thickness of ∼2 μm formed on the uncorroded area was confirmed. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that SiO32- could absorb on the MgO (1 0 0) surface in a parallel orientation through the coordinate bonds between the O and Mg atoms. The distances of Mg-O bonds are 2.052 and 2.249 Å, suggesting that they are coordinated. The adsorption/interaction mechanisms of SiO32- were also analyzed through charge density distribution and atomic densities. Molecular dynamics simulations further confirmed that a uniform SiO32- layer was absorbed on the MgO surface. In the local corroded area, free SiO32- would react with Mg2+ and OH- produced by corrosion to form the insoluble magnesium silicate compound, which hindered the spread of corrosion.

Highly efficient uranium (VI) capture from aqueous solution by means of a hydroxyapatite-biochar nanocomposite: Adsorption behavior and mechanism

The exploration and rational design of easily separable and highly efficient sorbents with the sufficient capability of retaining radioactive and toxic uranium U(VI) is paramount. In this study, a hydroxyapatite (HAP) biochar nanocomposite (BR/HAP) was successfully fabricated from rice straw biochar (BR), to be used as a new and efficient adsorbent for removing U(VI) from aqueous solution. Both BR and the BR/HAP composite were characterized via Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Batch test results showed that BR/HAP exhibited remarkably higher adsorption capacity than the raw BR. A pseudo-second order kinetic model thoroughly explained the adsorption kinetics, providing the maximum U(VI) adsorption capacities (q_e) of 110.56 mg g^-1 (R² = 0.98) and 428.25 mg g^-1 (R² = 0.99), for BR and BR/HAP, respectively, which was indicative of the rate-limited sorption via diffusion or surface complexation after rapid initial adsorption steps. The Langmuir isotherm model fitted the experimental data to accurately simulate the adsorption of U(VI) onto BR and BR/HAP (R² = 0.97 and R² = 0.99). The thermodynamic results showed negative values for ΔG°, clearly indicating that the reaction was spontaneous, as well as positive values for ΔH° (11.04 kJ mol^-1 and 28.86 kJ mol^-1, respectively) and ΔS° (88.97 kJ mol^-1 K^-1, and 183.42 kJ mol^-1 K^-1), making clear the endothermic nature of U(VI) adsorption onto both sorbents, with an increase in randomness at a molecular level. FTIR spectroscopy and XPS spectrum further confirmed that the primary mechanisms were ion exchange with UO₂²⁺ and surface complexion by -OH and -COOH. In addition, BR/HAP showed an excellent reusability, making it a promising candidate as a new sorbent for U(VI) removal from wastewater. In view of that, it would be interesting to perform future research to explore practical implications of this sorbent material regarding protection from environmental and public health issues related to that pollutant.

Utilization of Citrullus lanatus L. seeds to synthesize a novel MnFe2O4-biochar adsorbent for the removal of U(VI) from wastewater: Insights and comparison between modified and raw biochar

Uranium (U) is a radioactive and highly toxic metal. Its excessive concentrations in the aqueous environments may result in severe and irreversible damage. To fight this hazard, a raw biochar was prepared from Citrullus lanatus L. seeds, then characterized and compared with a MnFe₂O₄ modified biochar, both tested for U(VI) adsorption from wastewater, which was assayed for the first time in this study. The characterization of the adsorbent materials was performed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) with elemental mapping, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The effects of solution pH, concentration of sorbate and sorbents, temperature, time and ionic strength were assessed as regards their influence on U(VI) adsorption. The experimental adsorption data showed good fit to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (reaching a value of q_e = 15.12 mg g^-1, R² = 0.96 at equilibrium), and to the Langmuir isotherm (achieving a maximum score of q_max = 27.61 mg g^-1, R² = 0.96). The maximum adsorption capacity was found at 318 K. The results of the study indicate that the binding of negatively charged functional groups (carbonyls, hydroxyls, and some carboxylic groups) with MnFe₂O₄ significantly enhanced U(VI) adsorption. In view of the overall results, it can be concluded that the MnFe₂O₄ modification of the Citrullus lanatus L. seeds biochar could give an efficient alternative adsorbent for U(VI) removal in a variety of environmental conditions, simultaneously promoting resource utilization and good sustainable management of the materials studied, aiding to protect the environment and human health.

Application of surface complexation modeling on adsorption of uranium at water-solid interface: A review

Precise prediction of uranium adsorption at water-mineral interface is of great significance for the safe disposal of radionuclides in geologic environments. Surface complexation modeling (SCM) as a very useful tool has been extensively investigated for simulating adsorption behavior of metals/metalloids at water-mineral interface. Numerous studies concerning the fitting of uranium adsorption on various adsorbents using SCM are well documented, but the systematic and comprehensive review of uranium adsorption using various SCM is not available. In this review, we briefly summarized the rationale of SCM, including constant-capacitance-model (CCM), diffuse-layer-model (DLM), triple-layer-model (TLM); The recent progress in the application of SCM on the fitting of uranium adsorption towards metal (hydr)oxides, clay minerals and soil/sediments was reviewed in details. This review hopefully provides the beneficial guidelines for predicting the transport and fate of uranium in geologic environments beyond laboratory timescales.

Potential environmental applications of MXenes: A critical review

Various environmental pollutants (e.g., air, water and solid pollutants) are discharged into environments with the rapid development of industrializations, which is presently at the forefront of global attention. The high efficient removal of these environmental pollutants is of important concern due to their potential threat to human health and eco-diversity. Advanced nanomaterials may play an important role in the elimination of pollutants from environmental media. MXenes as the new intriguing class of graphene-like 2D transition metal carbides and/or carbonitrides have been widely used in energy storage, environmental remediation benefitting from exceptional structural properties such as highly active sites, high chemical stability, hydrophilicity, large interlayer spacing, huge specific surface area, superior sorption-reduction capacity. However, the comprehensive investigation concerning the removal of various environmental pollutants on MXenes is yet not available up to date. In this review, we summarized the synthesis and properties of MXenes to demonstrate the key roles in ameliorating their adsorption performance; then the recent advances and achievements in environmental application of MXenes on the removal of gases, organics, heavy metals and radionuclides were comprehensively reviewed in details; Finally, the formidable challenges and further perspectives regarding utilizing MXene in environmental remediation were proposed. Hopefully, this review can provide the useful information for environmental scientists and material engineers on designing versatile MXenes in actual environmental applications.

High-efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution by self-assembly pomelo peel/palygorskite composite

The efficient separation of low-concentration radionuclides by the eco-friendly adsorbent is a compelling requirement in the development of nuclear industry. Hence, a novel composite consisted of one-dimensional palygorskite (Pal) and three-dimensional pomelo peel (PP) is prepared by self-assembly approach (PP/Pal) and coupling agent approach (PP/KPal) for removing uranium (U(VI)) from aqueous solution. Moreover, the mass ratio (PP/Pal), adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, temperature, and ionic strength are investigated. Two adsorption kinetic models and isotherm models are used to investigate the kinetic behaviors and adsorption capacity, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities were 370.5 mg·g^-1 on PP/Pal and 357.3 mg·g^-1 on PP/KPal at pH 6.0, contact time 150 min and 25 °C. Meanwhile, the composite can be easily separated from water via a simple filtering. Furthermore, thermodynamic parameters indicate that adsorption is an endothermic and spontaneous process. And the surface complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction play a vital role. This work shows that the PP/Pal composite with high efficiency, low cost, and green has a further application in the treatment of wastewater containing U(VI).

The removal of uranium using novel temperature sensitive urea-formaldehyde resin: adsorption and fast regeneration

A novel adsorbent of temperature sensitive urea-formaldehyde (TS-UF) resin was synthesized by base/acid two-step synthetic strategy with low formaldehyde/urea mole ratio of 0.8. The sorption kinetics of TS-UF resin obeys the pseudo-second-order model, and the adsorption is an endothermic process. The Langmuir model can well describe the sorption isotherms, through which the Q_max is calculated to be 99.2 mg/g for uranium (VI) at pH 6.0 and T = 298 K. The characterized results show that the functional groups -NH- and -CH₂OH in TS-UF resin have been involved in uranium sorption via chemical interaction. The temperature sensitive property of TS-UF resin significantly accelerates the regeneration of TS-UF resin, which can be fast regenerated within 15 min at its low critical solution temperature 333 K and exhibits high removal efficiency of uranium (VI) (>90%) over 5 cycles. Therefore, TS-UF resin can be as a promising sorbent for the uranium (VI) removal from wastewater due to its low-cost, easy-fabrication, high-efficiency and fast regeneration. This work can not only boost the exploration of novel adsorbent materials, but also promote the investigations of the regeneration and reusability of adsorbents.

Influence of silicate on the structural memory effect of layered double hydroxides for the immobilization of selenium

The influence of silicate on the structural memory effect of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has been rarely reported. In this study, five kinds of calcined LDHs (CLDHs) were synthesized and used as adsorbents for the sorption of selenium with or without silicate, under the initial pH 10 and 13, respectively, characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherm. The results indicated that silicate can significantly affect the phase transformation of CLDHs, and the sorption amounts of selenite and selenate dramatically decreased in the presence of silicate. Specifically, silicate can react with MgO and Al₂O₃ in CLDHs to generate magnesium silicate hydrate and geopolymer-like substance which were covered on the surface of particles, blocking the hydroxylation of metal oxides. However, higher pH suppressed the interaction between MgO and silicate and enhanced the formation of geopolymer-like substance, which promoted the regeneration of LDHs. Al in CLDHs plays a critical role in the regeneration of LDHs. Besides, the ternary oxides (CLDH-2, Mg₂Al_0.75Fe_0.25-oxide; CLDH-3, Mg₂Al_0.5Fe_0.5-oxide) possessed larger specific surface areas (127.7 and 158.2 m²/g) and consequently presented more resistance to the effect of silicate.

Naturally available diatomite and their surface modification for the removal of hazardous dye and metal ions: A review

The presence of toxic pollutants such as dyes and metal ions at higher concentrations in water is very harmful to the environment. Removal of these pollutants using diatomaceous earth or diatomite (DE) and surface-modified DE has been extensively explored due to their excellent physio-chemical properties and low cost. Therefore, naturally available DE being inexpensive, their surface modified adsorbents could be one of the potential candidates for the wastewater treatment in the future. In this context, the current review has been summarized for the removal of both pollutants i.e., dyes and metal ions by surface-modified DE using the facile adsorption process. In addition, this review is prominently focused on the various modification process of DE, their cost-effectiveness; the physio-chemical characteristics and their maximum adsorption capacity. Further, real-time scenarios of reported adsorbents were tabulated based on the cost of the process along with the adsorption capacity of these adsorbents.

Functionalized nanoflower-like hydroxyl magnesium silicate for effective adsorption of aflatoxin B1

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), which is widely found in food and feed, poses a serious threat to the health of human and livestock. In this work, functionalized nanoflower-like hydroxyl magnesium silicate (FNHMS) was synthesized for adsorption of AFB1. First, bulk magnesium silicate (MS) was converted into nanoflower-like hydroxyl magnesium silicate (NHMS) by hydroxylation. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) modification then enhanced the hydrophobicity and the affinity to AFB1 of NHMS. The adsorption performance for AFB1 followed the order of MS < NHMS < FNHMS, and the adsorption performance increased with the increase of the dose of CTMAB. Isothermal adsorption analysis indicated that the surface of FNHMS was heterogeneous. The adsorption capacity of FNHMS-0.4 to AFB1 was estimated to be 27.34 mg g^-1 and 28.61 mg g^-1 by Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm adsorption model, respectively. By analyzing the adsorption kinetics and adsorption thermodynamics, both physical adsorption and chemisorption existed in the process of AFB1 being adsorbed on FNHMS-0.4. Adsorption mechanisms analysis indicated that the adsorption followed the adsorption site priority of H > O > Mg. This work demonstrates that FNHMS could be a promising adsorbent for removal of AFB1.

A critical review of clay-based composites with enhanced adsorption performance for metal and organic pollutants

Adsorption techniques offer unique advantages owing to the use of synthetic (e.g., nanosized metal oxides and polymer-functionalized nanocomposites) and natural (e.g., clay and biochar) materials for pollutant removal. Although the most widely used adsorbent is activated carbon, extensive studies have highlighted the promising potential of modified clay minerals and biochar for removing heavy metal and organic pollutants from industrial, drinking, and eutrophic wastewater, due to their low cost and easy accessibility. However, clay modification using acids, calcination, polymers, or surfactants exhibits relatively low absorption/regeneration ability towards antibiotics, aromatics, and various dyes. The coexistence of numerous contaminants in industrial wastewater inhibited the performance of adsorbents, which accelerated the development of novel modified clay composites such as clay-biochar, organo-bentonite/sodium alginate beads, and enhanced biochar. This review summarizes recent studies and absorption mechanisms concerning clay composites based on various modification methods and component materials. The comparison of clay composites used for the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants provides valuable insight into real wastewater treatment. Knowledge gaps, uncertainties, and future challenges involved in the fabrication and regeneration of modified clay composites are also identified.

Synthesis of magnetic biochar composites for enhanced uranium(VI) adsorption

Magnetic biochar composites were successfully fabricated by pyrolysis of siderite and rice husk under N₂ condition. The results of a variety of characterization implied magnetic biochar displayed porous structures with larger specific surface area. The batch adsorption experiments showed high adsorption properties of magnetic biochar composites toward U(VI) (52.63 mg/g at pH 4.0), whereas U(VI) adsorption was significantly influenced by Na₂CO₃ and HA. U(VI) adsorbed onto magnetic biochar was reduced to U(IV) by Fe₃O₄ according to XPS and XANES analyses. In addition, no significant effect of ionic strength of NaCl and EXAFS results, illustrated the inner-sphere surface complexation of U(VI) on magnetic biochar. Owing to the simple synthesis procedure, low cost, high adsorption efficiency, easy separation and environmental friendly, magnetic biochar can be considered as a potential adsorbent for the purification of U(VI)-bearing wastewater in environmental remediation.

Diatomite modified by TiO2 for adsorption of U(VI)

Diatomite was modified with TiO2. The synthesized materials were characterized and used for removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The influences of pH, contact time and temperature on U(VI) adsorption onto TiO2@diatomite were studied by batch technique, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to analyze the experimental data. We compared the adsorption of U(VI) onto natural diatomite, TiO2 and TiO2@diatomite made by sol-gel method. The dynamic process showed that the adsorption of U(VI) onto TiO2@diatomite matched the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the adsorption of U(VI) was significantly dependent on pH values. Through simulating the adsorption isotherms by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubini–Radushkevich (D–R) models, respectively, it could be seen that the adsorption patterns of U(VI) onto TiO2@diatomite were mainly controlled by surface complexation, and the adsorption processes were endothermic and spontaneous. The modification of diatomite by TiO2 shows a novel material for removing U(VI) from water environment for industrialized application.

Preparation of magnesium silicate/carbon composite for adsorption of rhodamine B

The surface area and pore structure, electrostatic interaction and functional groups are the main adsorption mechanisms.
