Efficient separation of helium from methane using MOF membranes

Highly efficient helium purification through a dual-membrane system: insights from molecular dynamics simulations

Almost all helium is resourced from natural gas reservoirs. Hence, it is essential to develop new efficient technologies to recover helium from natural gas. In this work, we propose a novel dual membrane system, consisting of C2N (M1) and graphdiyne (M2) membranes, to separate and purify helium from a ternary gas mixture of He/N2/CH4. In this regard, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the separation performance of the proposed system. Here, we explored the effect of applied pressure (up to 2 MPa) and the feed composition on the separation performance. The simulation results revealed that in the designed system, the M1 membrane allows He and N2 to diffuse through and prevents CH4 from crossing even at an applied pressure gradient. Next, the M2 membrane only allows He to transfer through and prevents N2 from crossing even at the applied pressure gradient. As a result, the dual membrane system showed a high He permeance of 2.5 × 106 GPU and ultrahigh He selectivity. In addition, the suggested dual membrane system could separate three components simultaneously at the applied pressure of 2 MPa, which implies the outstanding performance of the system. We also analyzed the density map, the van der Waals interactions, and the potential of the mean force calculations to better understand the permeation of gas species across the designed system.

Engineering of Stable Anionic/Neutral MOFs with Zinc-Adeninate Building Units for Efficient C2H2/CO2 Separation

Using adenine and metal ions to form secondary building units (SBUs), further connected by a highly symmetrical multicarboxylic linker to construct an amino-modified porous framework with high porosity, is an effective strategy. By regulating the deprotonation and hydrolysis capacity of the synthesized solvent, it is possible to obtain different charged frameworks. In this work, two stable anionic/neutral MOFs, (Et2NH2)[Zn3(TCPE)(adenine)2CH3COO]·DEF·3H2O (1) and [Zn3.5(adenine)(TCPE)1.5(DMA)(H2O)0.5]·2DMA·2H2O (2), have been synthesized based on zinc-adeninate building units and symmetric tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)ethylene (H4TCPE) in N,N-diethylformamide (DEF) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) reaction systems, respectively. 1 is an anionic framework based on 1D rod zinc-adeninate SBU, containing 1D rectangular (14.3 × 6.3 Å2) and square (14.3 × 14.3 Å2) channels. While 2 is a neutral framework built from isolated zinc-adeninate SBU, it contains hexagonal cages with a dimension of 5.5 Å in the structure. Both of them have high porosity (61.6% for 1 and 46.3% for 2) and high stability in a wide range of pH. 1 and 2 show high C2H2 adsorption capacity at 298 K (48.1 and 70.1 cm3 g-1, respectively) and selective capacity for C2H2/CO2 mixtures, which was confirmed by the breakthrough experiments. Furthermore, the interaction between the frameworks and gas molecules has also been explained by theoretical calculation. This work provides a good example of the design and regulation of porous structures for adsorption and separation functions.

In Silico Screening of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Zeolites for He/N2 Separation

In silico screening of 10,143 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and 218 all-silica zeolites for adsorption-based and membrane-based He and N₂ separation was performed. As a result of geometry-based prescreening, structures having zero accessible surface area (ASA) and pore limiting diameter (PLD) less than 3.75 Å were eliminated. So, both gases can be adsorbed and pass-through MOF and zeolite pores. The Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) methods were used to estimate the Henry's constants and self-diffusion coefficients at infinite dilution conditions, as well as the adsorption capacity of an equimolar mixture of helium and nitrogen at various pressures. Based on the obtained results, adsorption, diffusion and membrane selectivities as well as membrane permeabilities were calculated. The separation potential of zeolites and MOFs was evaluated in the vacuum and pressure swing adsorption processes. In the case of membrane-based separation, we focused on the screening of nitrogen-selective membranes. MOFs were demonstrated to be more efficient than zeolites for both adsorption-based and membrane-based separation. The analysis of structure-performance relationships for using these materials for adsorption-based and membrane-based separation of He and N₂ made it possible to determine the ranges of structural parameters, such as pore-limiting diameter, largest cavity diameter, surface area, porosity, accessible surface area and pore volume corresponding to the most promising MOFs for each separation model discussed in this study. The top 10 most promising MOFs were determined for membrane-based, vacuum swing adsorption and pressure swing adsorption separation methods. The effect of the electrostatic interaction between the quadrupole moment of nitrogen molecules and MOF atoms on the main adsorption and diffusion characteristics was studied. The obtained results can be used as a guide for selection of frameworks for He/N₂ separation.

A membrane solid-phase extraction method based on MIL-53-mixed-matrix membrane for the determination of estrogens and parabens: polyvinylidene difluoride membrane vs. polystyrene-block-polybutadiene membrane

In this work, MIL-53(Al), as an inorganic 'filler' component, was embedded in polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and polystyrene-block-polybutadiene (SBS) matrices to prepare two mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), using a simpler method than that previously reported. The PVDF and SBS membranes retained much of the properties of PVDF, SBS, and native MIL-53(Al). The prepared MMMs were then placed in a vortex-stirred sample solution to develop a membrane solid-phase extraction method to extract estrogens and parabens which were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The extraction efficiencies of the two membranes were compared, with the PVDF membrane exhibiting superior performance. In addition, the PVDF membrane was more free-standing and flexible, and its preparation method was also more facile and simple. The extraction conditions were optimized, and the analytical method showed low limits of detection (0.005-0.18 ng/mL), good linearity, and high accuracy, with recoveries ranging from 90.7 to 102.5%. As a result, this membrane solid-phase extraction method indicated its potential for application in aqueous sample pretreatment. For metal-organic framework based MMM used in this method, in addition to being durable, free-standing, mechanically stable, and possessing a large area, it should also exhibit high MOF incorporation, good flexibility, and appropriate thickness and weight.

Recent Advancements in MOF/Biomass and Bio-MOF Multifunctional Materials: A Review

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have delivered perfect answers in detection, separation, solving water and electromagnetic pollution and improving catalysis and energy storage efficiency due to their advantages including their highly tunable porosity, structure and versatility. Recently, MOF/biomass, bio-MOFs and their derivatives have gradually become a shining star in the MOF family due to the improvement in the application performance of MOFs using biomass and biomolecules. However, current studies lack a systematic summary of the synthesis and advancements of MOF/biomass, bio-MOFs and their derivatives. In this review, we describe their research progress in detail from the following two aspects: (1) synthesis of MOF/biomass using biomass as a template to achieve good dispersion and connectivity at the same time; (2) preparing bio-MOFs by replacing traditional organic linkers with biomolecules to enhance the connection stability between metal ions/clusters and ligands and avoid the formation of toxic by-products. This enables MOFs to possess additional unique advantages, such as improved biocompatibility and mechanical strength, ideal reusability and stability and lower production costs. Most importantly, this is a further step towards green and sustainable development. Additionally, we showcase some typical application examples to show their great potential, including in the fields of environmental remediation, energy storage and electromagnetic wave absorption.

Silver(I)-Tazobactam Frameworks with Improved Antimicrobial Activity

Tazobactam (TazoH) is a penicillinate sulfone β-lactamase inhibitor with negligible antimicrobial activity, commonly used with other antibiotics to provide an effective combination against many susceptible organisms expressing β-lactamases. Two novel Ag(I)-tazobactam frameworks ([Ag(I)-Tazo] and [Ag(I)-Tazo2]) prepared by mechanochemistry are presented herein as alternative forms to improve the antimicrobial activity of tazobactam by exploring synergistic effects with silver, being the first crystal structures reported of tazobactam coordinating to a metal site. The topological analysis of the 3D ([Ag(I)-Tazo]) and 2D+1D ([Ag(I)-Tazo2]) frameworks revealed underlying nets with the cbs (CrB self-dual) and decorated sql topologies, respectively. These novel frameworks are stable and show an enhanced antimicrobial activity when compared to tazobactam alone. Amongst the tested microorganisms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most sensitive to tazobactam and the new compounds. This study thus unveils novel facets of tazobactam chemistry and opens up its application as a multifunctional linker for the design of antibiotic coordination frameworks and related materials.

Adsorption Characteristics and Molecular Simulation of Malachite Green onto Modified Distillers’ Grains

Adsorbent material was prepared using distillers’ grains (DG), which is a waste product of distilleries. The DG was pre-treated with NaOH and esterification-modified with CS2, which is a commonly used anionic modifier. The structure and morphology of the adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, XRD, EDS, SEM, BET, and zeta potential. The related mechanism of adsorption of malachite green (MG) onto modified distiller’s grains (MDG) was studied by adsorption experiments and molecular simulation techniques. The experimental results showed that CS2 successfully modified the DG fiber, and simultaneously yielded the MDG with a uniform pore distribution. MDG had a considerable adsorption capacity of 367.39 mg/g and a maximum removal rate of 96.51%. After eight adsorption–desorption cycle experiments, the adsorption removal rate of MDG to MG dye remained at 82.6%. The adsorption process could be fitted well by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (the correlation coefficient R2 > 0.998) and Freundlich isotherm adsorption equation (the correlation coefficient R2 > 0.972). Moreover, the adsorption of MG dye by MDG is a spontaneous, endothermic, and increased entropy process. The results of molecular simulation showed that the mechanism of MG molecules onto MDG was mainly chemical adsorption. The adsorption performance of MG onto MDG was better and more stable than DG. Molecular simulation also provided a theoretical guidance of MDG adsorption–desorption for the research on recycling of DG resources.

Recent advances in molecular logic gate chemosensors based on luminescent metal organic frameworks

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) as chemosensors, can sense various analytes, such as heavy metal ions, antibiotics, pesticides, and small biological molecules. Based on the fluorescence characteristics of LMOFs, a variety of logic gates have been developed. In this review, we mainly discuss some common logic systems based on LMOFs, and then summarize the strategies of constructing logic gates from two perspectives. One is based on superior characteristics of MOFs, which can be synthesized from Ln3+ based MOFs (Ln-MOFs) or form hybrids by encapsulating different materials, including metal ions, dyes, and quantum dots (QDs). The other is to control the presence of inputs by reactions between different reactants and then further control switches of logic gates. Additionally, the common sensing mechanisms of LMOFs in logic gates are discussed. In the end, we have envisioned MOFs that possess a promising future in logic computing areas.

Recent advances in simulating gas permeation through MOF membranes

In the last two decades, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained increasing attention in membrane-based gas separations due to their tunable structural properties. Computational methods play a critical role in providing molecular-level information about the membrane properties and identifying the most promising MOF membranes for various gas separations. In this review, we discuss the current state-of-the-art in molecular modeling methods to simulate gas permeation through MOF membranes and review the recent advancements. We finally address current opportunities and challenges of simulating gas permeation through MOF membranes to guide the development of high-performance MOF membranes in the future.

Gas Permeation Characteristics of TiO2-ZrO2-Aromatic Organic Chelating Ligand (aOCL) Composite Membranes

Methyl gallate (MG) and ethyl ferulate (EF) with a benzene ring were separately used as aromatic organic chelating ligands (aOCLs) to prepare two versions of TiO₂-ZrO₂-aOCL composite sols via hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions with titanium(IV) isopropoxide (Ti(OC₃H₇)₄) and zirconium(IV) butoxide (Zr(OC₄H₉)₄). Thermogravimetric and FT-IR analysis of dry gels revealed that aromatic rings were present in the residual organic matter when the gel was fired under nitrogen at 300 °C. In X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, the TiO₂-ZrO₂ composite material prepared using these two aOCLs showed an amorphous structure with no crystalline peaks for TiO₂ and ZrO₂. In N₂ adsorption/desorption measurements at 77 K, the TiO₂-ZrO₂ samples using the aOCLs as a template appeared porous with a larger specific surface area than TiO₂-ZrO₂ without aOCL. TiO₂-ZrO₂-aOCL composite membranes were prepared by coating and firing TiO₂-ZrO₂-aOCL sol onto a SiO₂ intermediate layer using an α-alumina porous tube as a substrate. Compared with the TiO₂-ZrO₂ membrane, the TiO₂-ZrO₂-aOCL membranes had higher gas permselectivity. The TiO₂-ZrO₂-EF membrane showed a He permeance of 2.69 × 10⁻⁶ mol m⁻² s⁻¹ Pa⁻¹ with permeance ratios of He/N₂ = 10.6 and He/CF₄ = 163, while the TiO₂-ZrO₂-MG membrane revealed a bit less He permeance at 8.56 × 10⁻⁷ mol m⁻² s⁻¹ Pa⁻¹ with greater permeance ratios of He/N₂ = 61.7 and He/CF₄ = 209 at 200 °C. A microporous TiO₂-ZrO₂ amorphous structure was obtained by introducing aOCL. The differences in the side chains of each aOCL could possibly account for the differences in the microporous structures of the resultant TiO₂-ZrO₂-aOCL membranes.

Understanding CO2/CH4 Separation in Pristine and Defective 2D MOF CuBDC Nanosheets via Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics

The separation of CO₂/CH₄ gas mixtures is a key challenge for the energy sector and is essential for the efficient upgrading of natural gas and biogas. A new emerging field, that of metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs), has shown the potential to outperform conventional separation methods and bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this work, we model the CO₂/CH₄ separation in both defect-free and defective 2D CuBDC nanosheets and compare their performance with the bulk CuBDC MOF and experimental data. We report the results of external force nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (EF-NEMD) for pure components and binary mixtures. The EF-NEMD simulations reveal a pore blocking separation mechanism, in which the CO₂ molecules occupy adsorption sites and significantly restrict the diffusion of CH₄. The MON structure achieves a better selectivity of CO₂ over CH₄ compared to the bulk CuBDC MOF which is due to the mass transfer resistance of the methane molecules on the surface of the nanosheet. Our results show that it is essential to consider the real mixture in these systems rather than relying solely on pure component data and ideal selectivity. Furthermore, the separation is shown to be sensitive to the presence of missing linker defects in the nanosheets. Only 10% of missing linkers result in nonselective nanosheets. Hence, the importance of a defect-free synthetic method for CuBDC nanosheets is underlined.

Enhanced catalytic activity of MIL-101(Fe) with coordinatively unsaturated sites for activating persulfate to degrade organic pollutants

In this work, four novel defective MIL-101(Fe) catalysts with coordinatively unsaturated sites were successfully prepared via a facile synthesis strategy by employing benzoic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, or citric acid as a modulator. The modified catalysts were demonstrated the existence of defects in the parent framework by a series of characterizations. As compared to the initial MIL-101(Fe), the electronic structure of defective MIL-101(Fe) catalyst was effectively adjusted; meanwhile, the coordinatively unsaturated Fe sites were efficiently generated and the pore sizes were enlarged. Besides, the defective MIL-101(Fe) catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance for rhodamine B degradation by persulfate activation. To be specific, the degradation rates of rhodamine B increased from 58.70 to 94.05%, 86.11%, 78.70%, and 82.62%, respectively. The defective MIL-101(Fe) with coordinatively unsaturated sites showed good reusability and stability, and the probable catalytic mechanism was also investigated.

Photocatalytic Removal of Harmful Algae in Natural Waters by Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 Coating under Sunlight

In order to control the cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophic water, an Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 floating coating was prepared by a dip-coating method with a sponge, innovatively employed as a carrier for the removal of algae in natural water samples. The as-prepared photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of this Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 coating on algal removal and phytoplankton community structure in natural water samples with cyanobacterial blooms were investigated under sunlight. Results showed that Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 distributed uniformly on the surface of the coating with good stability and algae removal efficiency in water bodies. After 6 h of exposure under sunlight, the chlorophyll a in the natural water samples was degraded by 99.9%, the densities of Microcystis aeruginosa were reduced by 92.6% and the densities and biomass of the other algae decreased by about 80%. Meanwhile, the content of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the samples was decreased, effectively controlling the cyanobacterial blooms. It was found that O2•− played the main role in the photocatalytic inactivation. In conclusion, the Ag/AgCl@ZIF-8 coating has a promising application potential for the removal of harmful cyanobacteria, and provides a new idea for the control of cyanobacterial blooms in water bodies.

Metal Organic Framework Based Polymer Mixed Matrix Membranes: Review on Applications in Water Purification

Polymeric membranes have been widely employed for water purification applications. However, the trade-off issue between the selectivity and permeability has limited its use in various applications. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were introduced to overcome this limitation and to enhance the properties and performance of polymeric membranes by incorporation of fillers such as silica and zeolites. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of hybrid inorganic-organic materials that are introduced as novel fillers for incorporation in polymeric matrix to form composite membranes for different applications especially water desalination. A major advantage of MOFs over other inorganic fillers is the possibility of preparing different structures with different pore sizes and functionalities, which are designed especially for a targeted application. Different MMMs fabrication techniques have also been investigated to fabricate MMMs with pronounced properties for a specific application. Synthesis techniques include blending, layer-by-layer (LBL), gelatin-assisted seed growth and in situ growth that proved to give the most homogenous dispersion of MOFs within the organic matrix. It was found that the ideal filler loading of MOFs in different polymeric matrices is 10%, increasing the filler loading beyond this value led to formation of aggregates that significantly decreased the MOFs-MMMs performance. Despite the many merits of MOFs-MMMs, the main challenge facing the upscaling and wide commercial application of MOFs-MMMs is the difficult synthesis conditions of the MOFs itself and the stability and sustainability of MOFs-MMMs performance. Investigation of new MOFs and MOFs-MMMs synthesis techniques should be carried out for further industrial applications. Among these new synthesis methods, green MOFs synthesis has been highlighted as low cost, renewable, environmentally friendly and recyclable starting materials for MOFs-MMMs. This paper will focus on the investigation of the effect of different recently introduced MOFs on the performance of MOFs-MMMs in water purification applications.

Large-Scale Computational Screening of Metal Organic Framework (MOF) Membranes and MOF-Based Polymer Membranes for H2/N2 Separations

Several thousands of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported to date, but the information on H₂/N₂ separation performances of MOF membranes is currently very limited in the literature. We report the first large-scale computational screening study that combines state-of-the-art molecular simulations, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD), to predict H₂ permeability and H₂/N₂ selectivity of 3765 different types of MOF membranes. Results showed that MOF membranes offer very high H₂ permeabilities, 2.5 × 10³ to 1.7 × 10⁶ Barrer, and moderate H₂/N₂ membrane selectivities up to 7. The top 20 MOF membranes that exceed the polymeric membranes' upper bound for H₂/N₂ separation were identified based on the results of initial screening performed at infinite dilution condition. Molecular simulations were then carried out considering binary H₂/N₂ and quaternary H₂/N₂/CO₂/CO mixtures to evaluate the separation performance of MOF membranes under industrial operating conditions. Lower H₂ permeabilities and higher N₂ permeabilities were obtained at binary mixture conditions compared to the ones obtained at infinite dilution due to the absence of multicomponent mixture effects in the latter. Structure-performance relations of MOFs were also explored to provide molecular-level insights into the development of new MOF membranes that can offer both high H₂ permeability and high H₂/N₂ selectivity. Results showed that the most promising MOF membranes generally have large pore sizes (>6 Å) as well as high surface areas (>3500 m²/g) and high pore volumes (>1 cm³/g). We finally examined H₂/N₂ separation potentials of the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) in which the best MOF materials identified from our high-throughput screening were used as fillers in various polymers. Results showed that incorporation of MOFs into polymers almost doubles H₂ permeabilities and slightly enhances H₂/N₂ selectivities of polymer membranes, which can advance the current membrane technology for efficient H₂ purification.
