Abstract
Effective elimination of insoluble emulsified oils and soluble organic dyes has received extensively attention in wastewater treatment. In this work, a chitosan and polydopamine @ aramid nanofibers (CS&PDA@ANFs) aerogel membrane was fabricated through an integration methodology consisting of phase inversion and successive deposition of PDA and CS. The as-prepared aerogel membrane possessed a satisfactory three-dimensional interpenetrating network architecture with high porosity and desirable mechanical property. Furthermore, due to the synergistic effect of hydrophilic CS and PDA, the resultant membrane exhibited good superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity associated with favorable oil resistance/antioil fouling properties. The combination of the interconnected porous structures and super wettability endowed the aerogel membranes with desirable oil-in-water emulsion separation performance. Particularly, an extremely high permeation flux (3729 L/m2/h) and a rejection rate (99.3%) were achieved for the CS&PDA@ANFs membrane. Moreover, diverse dyes could be also adsorbed by the resultant membrane, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity of cationic dye malachite green could reach 36 mg/g, with a high rejection rate over 97%. This study indicated that the CS&PDA@ANFs aerogel membrane held great promise for practical applications in complex wastewater remediation.

Abstract
The combination of photocatalysis and membrane procedures represents a promising approach for water treatment. This study utilized green synthesis methods to produce TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) using Pomegranate extract and ZnO nanoparticles using Tangerine extract. These nanoparticles were then incorporated into a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanocomposite photocatalytic membrane. Different devices were used to examine the properties of nanocomposite membranes. The prepared membranes' morphology was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The hydrophilicity of the membrane surface was assessed through the measurement of contact angle, while the crystal structure and chemical bonding were analyzed using Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The study also encompassed an examination of the mechanical properties. The hydrophilicity of the modified membrane exhibited a significant improvement. Additionally, there was an observed increase in both the pure water flux and rejection values. The photocatalytic activity of the membrane was found to be enhanced when exposed to sunlight as compared to when kept in the dark. The TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites membrane exhibited the highest level of photocatalytic degradation, achieving a rejection rate of 98.7% compared to the unmodified membrane. Therefore, it was determined that the TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites membrane exhibited superior performance to the other membranes assessed. The potential utility of our research lies in its application within the water treatment industry, specifically as an effective technique for modifying PVC membranes.

Abstract
Exposure of synthetic dye, such as methylene blue (MB), in water bodies led to a serious threat to living things because they are toxic and non-degradable. Amongst the introduced dye removal methods, membrane separation process can be considered a powerful technique for treating dye contamination. However, this method commonly suffered from drawbacks, such as short membrane lifetime, low permeability and selectivity. To overcome these issues, graphene oxide (GO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) were used as additives to fabricate polyethersulfone (PES)- and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based hybrid membranes via non-solvent-induced phase separation method. Prior to membrane fabrication, GO was synthesised via electrochemical exfoliation method assisted by customised triple-tail surfactant. The potential of PES- and PVDF-based hybrid membranes for wastewater treatment has been discussed widely. However, direct comparison between these two polymeric membranes is not critically discussed for MB dye separation application yet. Therefore, this study is aimed at evaluating the performance of different types of polymers (e.g. PES and PVDF) in terms of membrane morphology, properties, dye rejection and antifouling ability. Results showed that the incorporation of GO and TiO2 alters the morphology of the fabricated membranes and affects dye rejection further, as well as their antifouling performance. In contrast with pristine membrane, PES-GO/TiO2 and PVDF-GO/TiO2 possessed high hydrophilicity, as indicated by their low contact angle (67.38° and 62.12°, respectively). Based on this study, PVDF-GO/TiO2 showed higher porosity value (94.88%), permeability (87.32 L/m2hMPa) and MB rejection rate (92.63%), as well as flux recovery ratio value of > 100% as compared with others. Overall, the incorporation of GO and TiO2 with PVDF polymer are proven to be effective hybrid materials of membrane fabrication for dye rejection application in the near future. The polymer material's intrinsic properties can affect the attributes of the fabricated membrane.

Abstract
Environmental pollution has become a worldwide issue. Rapid industrial and agricultural practices have increased organic contaminants in water supplies. Hence, many strategies have been developed to address this concern. In order to supply clean water for various applications, high-performance treatment technology is required to effectively remove organic and inorganic contaminants. Utilizing photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) has shown promise as a viable alternative process in the water and wastewater industry due to its efficiency, low cost, simplicity, and low environmental impact. PMRs are commonly categorized into two main categories: those with the photocatalyst suspended in solution and those with the photocatalyst immobilized in/on a membrane. Herein, the working and fouling mechanisms in PMRs membranes are investigated; the interplay of fouling and photocatalytic activity and the development of fouling prevention strategies are elucidated; and the significance of photocatalysis in membrane fouling mechanisms such as pore plugging and cake layering is thoroughly explored.

Abstract
Serious membrane fouling has limited the development of ultrafiltration membrane technology for water purification. Synthesis of an ultrafiltration membrane with prominent anti-fouling ability is of vital importance. In this study, CAB-GO composite nanosheets were prepared by grafting graphene oxide (GO) with a zwitterionic material cocamidopropyl betaine (CAB) with strong antifouling properties. Anti-fouling CAB-GO/PES mixed matrix ultrafiltration membrane (CGM) was prepared by the phase inversion method with polyethersulfone (PES). Due to its electrostatic interaction, the interlayer distance between CAB-GO nanosheets was increased, and the dispersibility of GO was improved to large extent, thereby effectively avoiding the phenomenon of GO agglomeration in organic solvents. Based on the improvement of the surface porosity and surface hydrophilicity of the CAB-GO/PES mixed matrix membrane, the pure water flux of CGM-1.0 can reach 461 L/(m2·h), which was 2.5 times higher than that of the original PES membrane, and the rejection rates toward BSA and HA were above 96%. Moreover, when the content of CAB-GO was 0.1 wt%, the prepared CAB-GO/PES membrane exhibited very high BSA (99.1%) and HA (98.1%) rejection during long-term operation, indicating excellent anti-fouling ability.

Abstract
Among the various emerging contaminants, pharmaceuticals (PhACs) seem to have adverse effects on the quality of water. Even the smallest concentration of PhACs in ground water and drinking water is harmful to humans and aquatic species. Among all the deaths reported due to COVID-19, the mortality rate was higher for those patients who consumed antibiotics. Consequently, PhAC in water is a serious concern and their removal needs immediate attention. This study has focused on the PhACs' degradation by collaborating photocatalysis with membrane filtration. TiO2-based photocatalytic membrane is an innovative strategy which demonstrates mineralization of PhACs as a safer option. To highlight the same, an emphasis on the preparation and reinforcing properties of TiO2-based nanomembranes has been elaborated in this review. Further, mineralization of antibiotics or cytostatic compounds and their degradation mechanisms is also highlighted using TiO2 assisted membrane photocatalysis. Experimental reactor configurations have been discussed for commercial implementation of photoreactors for PhAC degradation anchored photocatalytic nanomembranes. Challenges and future perspectives are emphasized in order to design a nanomembrane based prototype in future for wastewater management.

Abstract
Wastewater is inevitably generated from human activities as part of the life cycle chain that potentially damages the environment. The integration of photocatalytic reaction and membrane separation for wastewater treatment has gained great attention in recent studies. However, there are still many technical limitations for its application such as toxic metal release, catalyst deactivation, fouling/biofouling, polymer disintegration, and separation performance decline. Different types, combinations, and modifications of photocatalysts material combined with membranes such as semiconductor metal oxides, binary/ternary hybrid metal oxides, elemental doped semiconductors, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for improving the performance and compatibility are presented and discussed. The strategies of incorporating photocatalysts into membrane matrix for pursuing the most stable membrane integrity, high photocatalytic efficiency, and excellent perm-selectivity performance in the very recent studies were discussed. This review also outlines the performance enhancement of photocatalytic membranes (PMs) in wastewater treatment and its potential for water reclamation. Photocatalysts enhanced membrane separation by inducing anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties as well as antibacterial activity. Based on the reviewed study, PMs are possible to achieve complete removal of emerging contaminants and ∼99% reduction of bacterial colony that leading on the zero liquid discharge (ZLD). However, the intensive exposure of photo-induced radicals potentially damages the polymeric membrane. Therefore, future studies should be focused on fabricating chemically stable host-membrane material. Moreover, the light source and the membrane module design for the practical application by considering the hydrodynamic and cost-efficiency should be a concern for technology diffusion to the industrial-scale application.

Abstract
Photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs), coupling photocatalysts and membranes in a single system, have shown a considerable potential to reduce membrane fouling, which is one of the major drawbacks of using membranes to treat water and wastewater. In this study, the visible light-activated photocatalysts were incorporated into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) casting solution to synthesize the photocatalytic composite membranes. The physicochemical properties and the morphology of the membranes and photocatalysts were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-visible DRS), photoluminescence (PL), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), porosimetry, and contact angle analyses. The performance of the synthesized photocatalytic mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) in treating water containing humic acid, as one of the major components in natural organic matter (NOM) existing in drinking water sources, was investigated. Under visible light irradiation, the PAN/TiO2@MIL-88A (Fe) MMMs simultaneously adopted photocatalysis and membrane separation in the PMR and thereby enhanced humic acid removal and anti-fouling properties. The best synthesized photocatalytic membrane could remove 92.4% of the humic acid once exposed to visible light. The optimum membrane had suitable water permeability, a high flux recovery ratio (99.5%), and a 13.5% decline in the humic acid flux after a 10-h run, considerably lower compared to the corresponding decline of the pristine membrane (37.5% over the same period). The remarkable properties of the PAN/TiO2@MIL-88A (Fe) membrane, including its high anti-fouling specification, confirm the appropriateness of the synthesized MMM for treating water involving humic acid.

Abstract
In this work, a new type of UiO-66 incorporated polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes was fabricated to enhance antifouling properties and heavy metal ions removal efficiency. The UF membranes incorporating different loadings of the UiO-66 filler were prepared via the classical phase inversion process. These membranes unveiled enhanced hydrophilicity, porosity, water uptake, zeta potential, mechanical strength, permeability, and HA removal ratios due to the incorporation of hydrophilic UiO-66 fillers. Particularly, HA rejection ratios were observed to be approximately 93% for all the modified membranes, which was attributed to electrostatic repulsion interactions between the hydrophilic groups of HA and UiO-66. Moreover, the antifouling abilities of the modified membranes were evaluated and found to be much better with a high flux recovery ratio (FRR) of about 88% when compared to the blank PSf membrane (only around 34%). Moreover, the UiO-66 incorporated membranes were highly-effective in the removal of contaminants like heavy metal ions (Sr2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cr6+) and HA at the same time. Overall, the PSf UF membranes incorporating UiO-66 opened up a new avenue to enhance the membrane hydrophilicity, permeability, antifouling properties as well as heavy metal ions removal abilities.

Abstract
Abstract
Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have been widely developed as an attractive solution to overcome the drawbacks found in most polymer membranes, such as permeability-selectivity trade-off and low physicochemical stability. Numerous fillers based on inorganic, organic, and hybrid materials with various structures including porous or nonporous, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional, have been used. Demanded to further improve the characteristics and performances of the MMMs, the use of dual-filler instead of a single filler has then been proposed, from which multiple effects could be obtained. This article aims to review the recent development of MMMs with dual filler and discuss their performances in diverse potential applications. Challenges in this emerging field and outlook for future research are finally provided.

Abstract
The blending of nanomaterials into a polymeric matrix is a method known for its ability, under certain circumstances, to lead to an improvement in membrane properties. TiO2 nanoparticles have been used in membrane research for the last 20 years and have continuously shown promise in this field of research. Polysulfone (PSf) membranes were obtained through the phase inversion method, with different TiO2 nanoparticle concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt.%) and two types of TiO2 crystalline structure (anatase and rutile), via the addition of commercially available nanopowders. Research showed improvement in all studied properties. In particular, the 0.5 wt.% TiO2 rutile membrane recorded an increase in permeability of 139.7% compared to the control membrane. In terms of overall performance, the best nanocomposite membrane demonstrated a performance index increase of 71.1% compared with the control membrane.

Abstract
The elimination of dye pollutants from wastewater is a significant concern that has prompted extensive research into the development of highly efficient photocatalytic membranes. A novel method was proposed to prepare photocatalysis-enhanced poly(acrylonitrile-methyl acrylate) (PAN-based) membranes in this study. In detail, the blended membrane containing SiO2@TiO2 nanoparticles with a shell-core structure was first prepared via thermal-induced phase separation. The SiO2 nanoshells were dissolved, and the released TiO2 nanoparticles migrated to the membrane surface during a simple hydrolysis process, which prevents the TiO2 nanoparticles from directly contacting or interacting with the polymer matrix. The hydrogen bonds bind the exposed TiO2 with the PAN membrane surface, resulting in the formation of the TiO2@HPAN hybrid membrane. The photocatalytic efficiency of the TiO2@HPAN membrane doubled compared with that of nonhydrolyzed membranes. In the presence of UV light, the hybrid membrane can degrade 99.8% of methylene blue solution in less than 2 h, compared to only 86.1% for the blended membranes. Further, the TiO2@HPAN membrane showed excellent photocatalytic activity for cationic dyes due to electrostatic attraction. Moreover, the high-flux recovery rate and recycling stability of the TiO2@HPAN membrane lead to an excellent antifouling property. The facile preparation method proposed in this work shows extraordinary potential for the development of highly efficient selective photocatalytic materials for cationic dyes to be used in wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract
Photocatalysis and membrane technology in a single unit is an ideal strategy for the development of wastewater treatment systems. In this work, novel GO (x wt%)/TiO2-CA hybrid membranes have been synthesized via a facile non-solvent induced phase inversion technique. The strategy aimed to address the following dilemmas: (1) Effective utilization of visible light and minimize e-/h+ recombination; (2) Enhanced separation capability and superior anti-fouling and self-cleaning ability. The experimental results reveal that the integration of nano-composite (GO/TiO2) boosts the membrane properties when compared to pristine CA and single photocatalyst employed membrane (GO-CA and TiO2-CA). The effect of GO content on the properties of the photocatalytic membrane has been determined by utilizing three different ratios of GO, viz. 0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, and 2 wt% designated as NC(1)-CA, NC(2)-CA, and NC(3)-CA, respectively. Amongst them, NC(3)-CA membrane showed state-of-the-art performance with an elevated photocatalytic response (four times higher than pristine CA membrane) toward methyl orange. Moreover, the water flux of NC(3)-CA membrane is 613 L/m2h, approximately three times higher than bare CA membrane (297 L/m2h), while keeping the MO rejection high (96.6%). Besides, fouling experiments presented the lowest total and fouling resistance ratios and a higher flux recovery ratio (91.78%) for the NC(3)-CA membrane, which endows the membrane with higher anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties. Thus, NC(3)-CA membrane outperforms the other as synthesized membranes in terms of separation efficiency, visible light photo-degradation of pollutant, anti-fouling and self-cleaning ability. Therefore, NC(3)-CA membrane is considered as the next generation membrane for exhibiting great potential for the wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract
Developing an effective and stable separation membrane for water treatment is of much interest while challenging because of the restrictions of membrane fouling and water flux reduction. To minimize this problem, in this work, highly porous and hydrophilic nanostructure of NH2-modified MCM-41 (NH2-MCM-41) was embedded successfully into the nanofiltration (NF) membrane body via commonly used phase inversion method. The unmodified and modified nanofiller was analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-Ray powder diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. Furthermore, the modified membranes were characterized through surface and cross section FE-SEM images, the membrane surface roughness, hydrophilicity, antifouling properties and dye rejection. Benefiting from porous networks and enhanced hydrophilicity, the mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) revealed more prominent hydrophilic property as well as higher pure water flux (PWF) compared with naked membrane. The polysulphone (PSf) membrane modified with NH2-MCM-41-1.0 exhibited the highest pure water flux (PWF) of 65.43 kg/m2.h and superior antifouling characteristics with a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of around 97.0% and an irreversible fouling resistance (Rir) of 3.2%. Furthermore, the optimal membrane possessed high dye rejection (100%) and antifouling capacity (FRR of 97%) while filtering a field sample, effluent from a local stabilization pond treating municipal wastewater. The fabricated membrane in this study is believed to pave pathways for constructing NF membranes with superior effectiveness for other municipal and industrial wastewaters treatment.

Abstract
Photocatalytic materials can be used as self-cleaning functional materials to alleviate the irreversible fouling of ultrafiltration membranes. In this work, the small size g-C3N4/Bi2MoO6 (SCB) blended polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration membranes was fabricated by hydrothermal and phase inversion methods. As a functional filler of ultrafiltration membranes, the small size g-C3N4 nanosheet decorated on the surface of Bi2MoO6 can enhance the photocatalytic performance for bovine serum albumin (BSA) degradation, and remove irreversible fouling under visible light irradiation. In addition, the introduction of SCB microspheres into PSF matrix obviously increased the porosity of ultrafiltration membranes. Therefore, the SCB-PSF ultrafiltration membranes displayed excellent antifouling performance (flux recovery ratio is 82.53%) and BSA rejection rates (94.77%). SCB-PSF also had high photocatalytic self-cleaning activity, indicating excellent application prospects in organic wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is an effective and environmentally friendly approach for degrading organic pollutants, particularly in scenarios where sunlight can be utilized as the energy source. Opportunities are emerging to apply materials and methods from photocatalytic pollutant degradation to address the challenge of fouling. Membrane fouling, attributed to organic foulants, is a prevalent problem for all membrane-based technologies and represents a major deleterious impact on membrane performance. Integration of tactics developed in photocatalysis more broadly to membranes reveals new strategies for membrane fouling control-an approach taken by an increasing number of researchers. This review summarizes key developments in photocatalytic materials and methods in water treatment and presents recent progress in the development of processes for photocatalytic alleviation of membrane fouling, including photocatalyst design and modification strategies aimed at enhancing photocatalytic efficiency, as well as different configurations of photocatalysis-membrane systems (PMS). Perspectives on future research and development opportunities for photocatalytic membrane fouling control are also provided.

Abstract
Nanosized titanium oxide (TiO2) material is a promising photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants, whereas the difficulty of its recycling hinders its practical application. Herein, we reported the preparation of a novel titanium oxide/polysulfone (TiNPs/PSF) composite hollow microspheres by the combination of Pickering emulsification and the solvent evaporation technique and their application for the photodegradation of methyl blue (MB). P25 TiO2 nanoparticles dispersed on the surface of PSF microspheres. The porosity, density and photoactivity of the TiNPs/PSF composite microsphere are influenced by the TiO2 loading amount. The composite microsphere showed good methyl blue (MB) removal ability. Compared with TiO2 P25, and PSF, a much higher MB adsorption speed was observed for TiNPs/PSF microspheres benefited from their porous structure and the electrostatic attractions between the MB+ and the negatively charged PSF materials, and showed good degradation efficiency. For TiNPs/PSF composite microsphere with density close to 1, a 100% MB removal (10 mg L-1) within 120 min at a catalyst loading of 2.5 g L-1 can be obtained under both stirring and static condition, due to well dispersing of TiO2 particles on the microsphere surface and its stable suspending in water. For the non-suspended TiNPs/PSF composite microsphere with density bigger than 1, the 100% MB removal can be only obtained under stirring condition. The removal efficiency of MB for the composite microspheres retained 96.5%, even after 20 cycles. Moreover, this composite microsphere also showed high MB removal ability at acidic condition. The high catalysis efficiency, excellent reusability and good stability make this kind of TiNPs/PSF composite microsphere a promising photocatalyst for the water organic pollution treatment.

Abstract
Construction of heterojunction and nitrogen doping is an effective approach for synthesizing photocatalysts with high quantum yield and efficient electron-hole separation. 2D MXene Ti3C2 has been considered a good carbonaceous nanomaterial for designing heterojunction, while the original surface groups and stacked structure limit the electron-hole separation. Herein, a hybrid of nitrogen-doped Ti3C2 nanosheets and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) composed of TiO2 NPs in situ growing on isopropyl amine (iPA) modified Ti3C2 (iN-Ti3C2) was developed for the first time. The novel iN-Ti3C2/TiO2 hybrid exhibited an excellent ultraviolet-light photodegradation of methylene blue (MB), with a degradation rate (0.02642 min-1) significantly higher than that of pure TiO2 NPs, bulk-Ti3C2/TiO2, dimethyl sulfoxide modified Ti3C2/TiO2 hybrid, and hydrazine monohydrate modified Ti3C2/TiO2 hybrid. The formation of heterojunction between iN-Ti3C2 and TiO2 and its role in the photocatalysis were systematically analyzed using various characterization techniques and density functional theory calculation. The iPA modification exfoliated Ti3C2 and doped N on Ti3C2 nanosheets; the in situ grown TiO2 NPs formed efficient heterojunctions with the nanosheets; the N-doping facilitated electron migration in Ti3C2 and inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs; •OH dominated the photodegradation of MB. This work provides a new approach of constructing efficient photocatalysts for the treatment of organics-polluted water.

Synergistic interaction of Z-scheme 2D/3D g-C 3N 4/BiOI heterojunction and porous PVDF membrane for greatly improving the photodegradation efficiency of tetracycline. J Colloid Interface Sci 2020; 586:335-348. [PMID: 33190831 DOI: 10.1016/j.jcis.2020.10.097] [Citation(s) in RCA: 31] [Impact Index Per Article: 7.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/05/2020] [Revised: 10/19/2020] [Accepted: 10/24/2020] [Indexed: 11/22/2022]
Abstract
Designing photocatalytic membranes with excellent photocatalytic and self-cleaning ability based on the synergistic effect between the crystal structure of membrane matrix and photocatalyst is highly desirable. Herein, Z-scheme 2D/3D g-C3N4/BiOI heterojunction blended in beta-phase polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (β-phase PVDF) was prepared via solvent crystallization and phase inversion technique. As expected, the designed g-C3N4/BiOI/β-phase PVDF photocatalytic membranes (CN/BI/β-phase PVDF PMs) achieved exceptional photocatalytic degradation efficiency for tetracycline (94.6%) as compared to the CN/BI heterojunction power (84.0%) and two other control membrane matrixes (CN/BI/PAN and CN/BI/CA PMs) within 120 min. Meanwhile, the dynamic cyclic degradation system of CN/BI/β-phase PVDF PMs was also investigated that reached to be 94.8% in 80 min. Besides, the CN/BI/β-phase PVDF PMs not only had outstanding self-cleaning activity and remarkable permeability (up to 30,688 L·m-2·h-1) but also had high stability and reusability even after five runs. Importantly, the hydroxyl radical detection and ESR analysis identified that the β-phase PVDF membrane could promote photoinduced carrier separation efficiency of 2D/3D g-C3N4/BiOI heterojunction. This work may open up a novel strategy for designing and constructing high-efficient photocatalytic membranes for water treatment.

Abstract
In this study, the characteristics of different types of nanosheet membranes were reviewed in order to determine which possessed the optimum propensity for antifouling during water purification. Despite the tremendous amount of attention that nanosheets have received in recent years, their use to render membranes that are resistant to fouling has seldom been investigated. This work is the first to summarize the abilities of nanosheet membranes to alleviate the effect of organic and inorganic foulants during water treatment. In contrast to other publications, single nanosheets, or in combination with other nanomaterials, were considered to be nanostructures. Herein, a broad range of materials beyond graphene-based nanomaterials is discussed. The types of nanohybrid membranes considered in the present work include conventional mixed matrix membranes, stacked membranes, and thin-film nanocomposite membranes. These membranes combine the benefits of both inorganic and organic materials, and their respective drawbacks are addressed herein. The antifouling strategies of nanohybrid membranes were divided into passive and active categories. Nanosheets were employed in order to induce fouling resistance via increased hydrophilicity and photocatalysis. The antifouling properties that are displayed by two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposite membranes also are examined.

Abstract
Photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMR), with immobilized photocatalysts, play an important role in process intensification strategies; this approach offers a simple solution to the typical catalyst recovery problem of photocatalytic processes and, by simultaneous filtration and photocatalysis of the aqueous streams, facilitates clean water production in a single unit. The synthesis of polymer photocatalytic membranes has been widely explored, while studies focused on ceramic photocatalytic membranes represent a minority. However, previous reports have identified that the successful synthesis of polymeric photocatalytic membranes still faces certain challenges that demand further research, e.g., (i) reduced photocatalytic activity, (ii) photocatalyst stability, and (iii) membrane aging, to achieve technological competitiveness with respect to suspended photocatalytic systems. The novelty of this review is to go a step further to preceding literature by first, critically analyzing the factors behind these major limitations and second, establishing useful guidelines. This information will help researchers in the field in the selection of the membrane materials and synthesis methodology for a better performance of polymeric photocatalytic membranes with targeted functionality; special attention is focused on factors affecting membrane aging and photocatalyst stability.

Abstract
A magnetic composite based on TiO2 nanosheets, ZnFe2O4 and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method, which possessed the band structure of a Z-scheme photocatalytic system. The properties and structures of the samples were characterized by XRD, UV-Vis DRS, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, XPS and PL spectroscopy. Compared with TiO2 nanosheets and the TiO2/RGO composite, the obtained ternary composite with 3 wt% RGO exhibited a significant enhancement in photocatalytic activities, attributed to the efficient charge separation induced by the fabricated Z-scheme system. About 99.7% of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) degraded within 60 min under simulated solar irradiation. Trapping experiments showed that superoxide anions (˙O2 -) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) were the main active species in the p-NP photocatalytic degradation. Finally, a possible photocatalytic mechanism of Z-scheme ZnFe2O4/TiO2/RGO was proposed based on the results of trapping experiments and the energy bands of TiO2 and ZnFe2O4.

Abstract
Araneose Ti3+ self-doped TiO2/SiO2 nanowires (RTiO2/SiO2) were prepared and anchored onto a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane. Careful characterizations and measurements indicated a covalent grafting of SiO2 onto reduced TiO2 (RTiO2) through Ti-O-Si linkages, acquiring uniformed RTiO2/SiO2 nanowires of almost complete anatase and benign hydrophilicity. The RTiO2/SiO2-based PES membrane showed a significantly enhanced visible light-driven degradation rate of methylene blue (MB) (90.7%), compared with that on bare PES (11.1%) and PES-RTiO2 (59.6%) membranes. The residual MB in filtered water was less than 5% after reusing three times. The normalized permeate flux of the modified membrane was 0.83, and the transmembrane pressure only increased by 0.4 MPa under irradiation of visible light. The improved performance of the PES-RTiO2/SiO2 was attributed to efficient intercept of MB molecular, light harvesting of visible light, and separation of charge carriers on araneose RTiO2/SiO2 nanowires.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is an ecofriendly technique that emerged as a promising alternative for the degradation of many organic pollutants. The weaknesses of the present photocatalytic system which limit their industrial applications include low-usage of visible light, fast charge recombination, and low migration ability of the photo-generated electrons and holes. Therefore, various elements such as noble metals and transition metals as well as non-metals and metalloids (i.e., graphene, carbon nanotube, and carbon quantum dots) are doped into the photocatalyst as co-catalysts to enhance the photodegradation performance. The incorporation of the co-catalyst which alters the photocatalytic mechanism was discussed in detail. The application of photocatalysts in treating persistent organic pollutants such as pesticide, pharmaceutical compounds, oil and grease and textile in real wastewater was also discussed. Besides, a few photocatalytic reactors in pilot scale had been designed for the effort of commercializing the system. In addition, hybrid photocatalytic system integrating with membrane filtration together with their membrane fabrication methods had also been reviewed. This review outlined various types of heterogeneous photocatalysts, mechanism, synthesis methods of biomass supported photocatalyst, photocatalytic degradation of organic substances in real wastewater, and photocatalytic reactor designs and their operating parameters as well as the latest development of photocatalyst incorporated membrane.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has unprecedentedly revolutionized human societies over the past decades and will continue to advance our broad societal goals in the coming decades. The research, development, and particularly the application of engineered nanomaterials have shifted the focus from "less efficient" single-component nanomaterials toward "superior-performance", next-generation multifunctional nanohybrids. Carbon nanomaterials (e.g., carbon nanotubes, graphene family nanomaterials, carbon dots, and graphitic carbon nitride) and metal/metal oxide nanoparticles (e.g., Ag, Au, CdS, Cu2O, MoS2, TiO2, and ZnO) combinations are the most commonly pursued nanohybrids (carbon-metal nanohybrids; CMNHs), which exhibit appealing properties and promising multifunctionalities for addressing multiple complex challenges faced by humanity at the critical energy-water-environment (EWE) nexus. In this frontier review, we first highlight the altered and newly emerging properties (e.g., electronic and optical attributes, particle size, shape, morphology, crystallinity, dimensionality, carbon/metal ratio, and hybridization mode) of CMNHs that are distinct from those of their parent component materials. We then illustrate how these important newly emerging properties and functions of CMNHs direct their performances at the EWE nexus including energy harvesting (e.g., H2O splitting and CO2 conversion), water treatment (e.g., contaminant removal and membrane technology), and environmental sensing and in situ nanoremediation. This review concludes with identifications of critical knowledge gaps and future research directions for maximizing the benefits of next-generation multifunctional CMNHs at the EWE nexus and beyond.

Abstract
PURPOSE Degradation or decomposition of the chemical herbicides by natural reagents after using can lead to produce various types of harmful intermediates. Ultrafiltration by the mixed matrix membranes blended with the graphene oxide/TiO2 can remove the residual herbicides from aqueous solution. METHODS Graphene oxide/TiO2x% (x = 10, 30, 50%) was prepared by solvothermal method and blended by polysulfone to prepare GO/TiO2/PSf membranes for dynamic rejection of aqueous solutions of glyphosate, 2,4-D, butachlor, and trifluralin in a dead-end flow system. The blended membranes were also applied for the adsorption of herbicides in batch experiments. RESULTS Addition of GO/TiO2 nanocomposite increased water flux from 7.3 for pure membrane to 211-326 kg/m2 h for mixed matrix samples in order to increase of the membrane porosity and surface hydrophilicity. The herbicides rejections were found in the range of 50-70% related to GO/TiO2 content. It was found that the membrane blended with 0.5 wt.% of GO/TiO2(10%) demonstrated the most efficiency. CONCLUSIONS Details of dynamic filtration showed that the blended membrane acted based on the size exclusion mechanism. Adsorption experiments indicated that the strong attractions between H-bond donor sites of the herbicide and GO/TiO2 nanoparticles in membranes played a key role in the increase of adsorption of herbicides on the membrane.

Abstract
A high-performance photocatalytic ceramic membrane was developed by direct growth of a TiO2 structure on a macroporous alumina support using a hydrothermal method. The morphological nanostructure of TiO2 on the support was successfully controlled via the interaction between the TiO2 precursor and a capping agent, diethylene glycol (DEG). The growth of anatase TiO2 nanorods was observed both on the membrane surface and pore walls. The well-organized nanorods TiO2 reduced the perturbation of the alumina support, thus controlling the hydrolysis rate of the TiO2 precursor and reducing membrane fouling. However, a decrease in the amount of the DEG capping agent significantly reduced membrane permeability, owing to the formation of nonporous clusters of TiO2 on the support. Distribution of the organized TiO2 nanorods on the support was very effective for the improvement of the organic removal efficiency and antifouling under ultraviolet illumination. The TiO2 nanostructure associated with the reactive crystalline phase, rather than the amount of layered TiO2 formed on the support, which was found to be the key to controlling photocatalytic membrane reactivity. These experimental findings would provide a new approach for the development of efficacious photocatalytic membranes with improved performance for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
A ternary nanocomposite consisting of N-doped graphene (NGR)/TiO₂/activated carbon (NGRT@AC) was prepared, and the components' synergetic effect on dye degradation was investigated after deposition on the surface of a polysulfone membrane (PSF). As far as we know, this ternary composite catalyst has never previously been used to degrade dyes nor been used as a functional layer for separation membranes. The surface morphology and structure of the as-prepared membranes were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The NGRT@AC-modified PSF membrane (NGRT@AC-PSF) presents excellent photodegradation efficiency to methyl orange (MO) under both UV (95.2%) and sunlight (78.1%) irradiation, much higher than those values of PSF, TiO₂- modified PSF (TiO₂-PSF), and N-doped graphene/TiO2 (NGRT)-modified PSF membranes (NGRT-PSF) under the same conditions. The high flux recovery ratio (95.5%) demonstrates that the NGRT@AC-PSF membrane shows improved antifouling performance. The photocatalytic results prove that surface deposition method (95.2%) was better than the blending method (31.1%) for forming high-performance membranes. Therefore, the NGRT@AC-PSF membrane has the potential for broad applications in dye degradation to treat waste water from textile industries.
