Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is a widely prevalent opportunistic pathogen. Multiple resistant strains of PA have emerged from excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics, making their eradication increasingly difficult. Therefore, the search for highly efficient and secure novel antimicrobial agents is crucial. According to reports, there is an increasing exploration of nanometals for antibacterial purposes. The antibacterial mechanisms involving the nanomaterials themselves, the release of ions, and the induced oxidative stress causing leakage and damage to biomolecules are widely accepted. Additionally, the study of the cytotoxicity of metal nanoparticles is crucial for their antibacterial applications. This article summarizes the types of metal nanomaterials and metal oxide nanomaterials that can be used against PA, their respective unique antibacterial mechanisms, cytotoxicity, and efforts made to improve antibacterial performance and reduce toxicity, including combination therapy with other materials and antibiotics, as well as green synthesis approaches.

Abstract
The wide application of Ag-loaded TiO2 nanohybrids photocatalysts on environment and energy increases the lung exposure risk to humans. Ag/TiO2 nanohybrids inhalation can cause pulmonary toxicity, and there are concerns about whether the loaded silver can be released and cause toxic effects on extrapulmonary organs. Therefore, in this study, the possible biotransformation, biodistribution, and toxicity of oropharyngeal aspirated Ag/TiO2 nanohybrids were investigated first time in vitro and in vivo to answer this question. Firstly, the results of biotransformation showed that the ultrafine silver nanoparticles (~3.5 nm, 2 w/w%) loaded on the surface of nano-TiO2 (~25 nm) could agglomerate and release in Gamble's solution, and the hydrodynamic diameter of the nanohybrids agglomerates increased from about 200 nm to 1 μm. Furthermore, after exposure 10 mg/kg Ag/TiO2 nanohybrids to C57BL/6 J male mice by oropharyngeal aspiration weekly, the biodistribution results showed that the released silver could result in blood, liver, and brain distribution within 28 d. Finally, body weight, organ coefficient, blood biochemical indicators of liver and kidney function, and pathological images demonstrated that although silver could release and lead to extrapulmonary organ distribution, it did not cause obvious extrapulmonary organ damage. The original lung was still the main toxicity and accumulation target organ of Ag/TiO2 nanohybrids, which mainly manifested as the pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic effects that should be focused on in the future. Therefore, this study is of great significance in evaluating the safety of Ag-loaded TiO2 nanoparticles and predicting their toxic mechanisms.

Abstract
The combination of photocatalysis and membrane procedures represents a promising approach for water treatment. This study utilized green synthesis methods to produce TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) using Pomegranate extract and ZnO nanoparticles using Tangerine extract. These nanoparticles were then incorporated into a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanocomposite photocatalytic membrane. Different devices were used to examine the properties of nanocomposite membranes. The prepared membranes' morphology was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The hydrophilicity of the membrane surface was assessed through the measurement of contact angle, while the crystal structure and chemical bonding were analyzed using Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The study also encompassed an examination of the mechanical properties. The hydrophilicity of the modified membrane exhibited a significant improvement. Additionally, there was an observed increase in both the pure water flux and rejection values. The photocatalytic activity of the membrane was found to be enhanced when exposed to sunlight as compared to when kept in the dark. The TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites membrane exhibited the highest level of photocatalytic degradation, achieving a rejection rate of 98.7% compared to the unmodified membrane. Therefore, it was determined that the TiO2/ZnO nanocomposites membrane exhibited superior performance to the other membranes assessed. The potential utility of our research lies in its application within the water treatment industry, specifically as an effective technique for modifying PVC membranes.

Abstract
A newly developed water-soluble polymeric nano-additive termed "partially cross-linked nanoparticles graft copolymer (PCLNPG)" has been successfully synthesized and harnessed as a pore former for modifying a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane for dyes removal. The PCLNPG content was varied in the PES polymeric matrix aiming to scrutinize its impact on membrane surface characteristics, morphological structure, and overall performance. Proposed interaction mechanism between methylene blue (MB), methyle orange (MO), and malachite green (MG) dyes with PES membrane was presented as well. Hydrophilicity and porosity of the novel membrane increased by 18 and 17 %, respectively, when manufactured with a 3 Wt. % PCLNPG, according to the findings. Besides this, the disclosed increased porosity, rather than the hydrophilic properties of the water-soluble PCLNPG, was the principal cause of the diminished contact angle. Meanwhile, raising the PCLNPG content in the prepared membrane made worthy shifts in its structure. A sponge-like region was materialized near the bottom surface as well. The membrane's pure water flux (PWF) synthesized with 3 Wt.% PCLNPG recorded 628 LMH, which is estimated 3.95 fold the pristine membrane. MG, MB, and MO dyes were rejected by 90.6, 96.3, and 97.87 %, respectively. These findings showed that the performance characteristics of the PES/PCLNPG membrane make it a potentially advantageous option to treat the textile wastewater.

Abstract
Global water scarcity and water pollution necessitate wastewater reclamation for further use. As an alternative to conventional techniques, membrane technology is extensively used as an advanced method for water purification and wastewater treatment due to its selectivity, permeability, and efficient removal of pollutants. However, microbial biofouling is a major threat that deteriorates membrane performance and imparts operational challenges. It is a natural phenomenon caused by the undesirable colonization of microbes on membrane surfaces. The economic penalties associated with this menace are enormous. The traditional preventive measures are dominated by biocides, toxic chemicals, cleaners and antifouling surfaces, which are costly and often cause secondary pollution. Recent focus is thus being directed to promote inputs from nanotechnology to control and mitigate this major threat. Different anti-microbial nanomaterials can be effectively used to prevent the adhesion of microbes onto the membrane surfaces and eliminate microbial biofilms, to provide an economical and eco-friendly solution to biofouling. This review addresses the formation of microbial biofilms and biofouling in membrane operations. The potential of nanocomposite membranes in alleviating this problem and the challenges in commercialization are discussed. The antifouling mechanisms are also highlighted, which are not widely elucidated.

Abstract
In recent years, massive bacterial infections have led to human illness and death, reminding us of the urgent need to develop effective and long-lasting antimicrobial materials. In this paper, Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 with good environmental friendliness and biological antibacterial activity was prepared by solvothermal method. The structure and morphology of the synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, TEM, XPS, and BET. To investigate the antibacterial activity of the synthesized samples, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis were used as target bacteria for experimental studies of zone of inhibition, bacterial growth curves, minimum bactericidal concentration and antibacterial durability. The results demonstrated that 20 wt.%Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 had the best bacteriostatic effect on E. coli and B. subtilis under dark and UV conditions compared to TiO2 and ZIF-8. Under the same conditions, the diameter of the inhibition circle of 20 wt% Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 is 8.5-11.5 mm larger than that of its constituent material 4 wt% Ag-TiO2, with more obvious antibacterial effect and better antibacterial performance. It is also proposed that the excellent antibacterial activity of Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 is due to the synergistic effect of Ag-TiO2 and ZIF-8 under UV light. In addition, the prepared material has good stability and durability with effective antimicrobial activity for more than 5 months.

Abstract
Nanofiltration (NF) membranes are promising media for water and wastewater treatment; however, they suffer from their hydrophobic nature and low permeability. For this reason, the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) NF membrane was modified by iron (III) oxide@Gum Arabic (Fe3O4@GA) nanocomposite. First, Fe3O4@GA nanocomposite was synthesized by the co-precipitation approach and then its morphology, elemental composition, thermal stability, and functional groups were characterized by various analyses. Next, the prepared nanocomposite was added to the casting solution of the PVC membrane. The bare and modified membranes were fabricated by a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The characteristics of fabricated membranes were assessed by mechanical strength, water contact angle, pore size, and porosity measurements. The optimum Fe3O4@GA/PVC membrane had a 52 L m-2. h-1. bar-1 water flux with a high flux recovery ratio (FRR) value (82%). Also, the filtration experiment exhibited that the Fe3O4@GA/PVC membrane could remarkably remove organic contaminants, achieving high rejection rates of 98% Reactive Red-195, 95% Reactive Blue-19, and 96% Rifampicin antibiotic by 0.25 wt% of Fe3O4@GA/PVC membrane. According to the results, adding Fe3O4@GA green nanocomposite to the membrane casting solution is a suitable and efficient procedure for modifying NF membranes.

Abstract
Membrane technology utilizing ultrafiltration (UF) processes has emerged as the most widely used and cost-effective simple process in many industrial applications. The industries like textiles and petroleum refining are promptly required membrane based UF processes to alleviate the potential environmental threat caused by the generation of various wastewater. At the same time, major limitations such as material selection as well as fouling behavior challenge the overall performance of UF membranes, particularly in wastewater treatment. Therefore, a complete discussion on material design with structural property relation and separation performance of UF membranes is always exciting. This state-of-the-art review has exclusively focused on the development of UF membranes, the material design, properties, progress in separation processes, and critical challenges. So far, most of the review articles have examined the UF membrane processes through a selected track of paving typical materials and their limited applications. In contrast, in this review, we have exclusively aimed at comprehensive research from material selection and fabrication methods to all the possible applications of UF membranes, giving more attention and theoretical understanding to the complete development of high-performance UF systems. We have discussed the methodical engineering behind the development of UF membranes regardless of their materials and fabrication mechanisms. Identifying the utility of UF membrane systems in various applications, as well as their mode of separation processes, has been well discussed. Overall, the current review conveys the knowledge of the present-day significance of UF membranes together with their future prospective opportunities whilst overcoming known difficulties in many potential applications.

Abstract
In this study, performance of braid reinforced hollow fiber membrane containing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) embedded with tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanosheets in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) was examined for textile wastewater treatment. The WO3 nanosheets was synthesized and blended at different concentrations (0.1-0.02 wt%) in casting solutions of the membranes. The WO3 nanosheets characterized using various tests such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, dot-mapping, and TEM. Furthermore, the effects of the increased WO3 nanosheets into the PVDF matrix on the membrane morphology, hydrophilicity, permeability, antifouling, and COD and color removal efficiency was investigated. The addition of 0.1 wt% of the nanosheets reduces the water contact angle from 69.3° to 62.5° while increasing overall porosity from 37.5 to 43.2%. COD and color removal for PVDF/0.10 wt% WO3 membrane was between 86-89% and 72-76%, respectively. While the TMP of modified WO3 membranes did not significantly increase due to antimicrobial properties of the WO3 nanosheets, the TMP of the pure PVDF membrane increase, indicating considerable cake layer fouling. The results of this study showed that modification of PVDF braid reinforced hollow fiber membrane using WO3 nanosheets is promising membrane for MBR systems.

Abstract
The current work aims to advance the hydrophilicity, morphology, and antifouling characteristics of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes for oily wastewater separation by incorporating modified bentonite. The surface of bentonite nanoparticles is altered by adopting the "grafting from" method using the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) approach. The PVC-based membrane is first prepared by blending acrylamide grafted bentonite (AAm-g-bentonite). AAm is grafted on bentonite in the presence of 2,2'-Bipyridyl and copper (I) bromide as a catalyst. The modified bentonite nanoparticles are studied using multiple techniques, such as fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), sedimentation tests, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), etc. Flat-sheet PVC-based membrane is prepared by blending AAm-g-bentonite using the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. Different methods, including FE-SEM, FTIR, sedimentation test, contact angle, porosity, antifouling property, and filtration studies of pure and oily water, are used to characterize and determine the performance of mixed-matrix membranes. Membrane performance is improved in the presence of modified bentonite (i.e., AAm-g-bentonite), with the best result achieved at PVC/AAm-g-ben-8 (i.e., 8 wt % of AAm-g-bentonite). Enhanced pure water flux (293.14 Lm-2h-1), permeate flux (123.96 Lm-2h-1), and oil rejection >93.2% are obtained by the reduced contact angle (49.1°) and improved porosity (71.22%).

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the efficacy of novel ultrafiltration and mixed matrix membrane (MMM) composed of hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) and silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) for the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In the polycarbonate (PC) MMM, the weight percent of HMO and Ag-NP has been increased from 5% to 10%. A neural network (ANN) was used in this study to compare PC-HMO and Ag-NP. MMM was evaluated in combination with HMO and Ag-NP loadings in order to assess their effects on pure water flux, mean pore size, porosity, and efficacy in removing BOD and COD. HMO and Ag-NPs can decrease membrane porosity in the casting solution while increasing mean pore size. According to the study's findings, the artificial neural network model appears to be highly appropriate for predicting the removal of BOD and COD. To develop a successful model, a suitable input dataset was selected, which consisted of BOD and COD. An ideal model architecture for MMM was proposed based on an optimal number of hidden layers (2 layers) and neurons (5-8 neurons). Experiments and predicted data show a strong correlation between the developed models. BOD was predicted with an excellent R2 and a low root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.99 and 0.05%, respectively, while COD was predicted with an excellent R2 and a low RMSE of 0.99 and 0.09%, respectively. Based on the results, Ag-NP was found to be an excellent candidate for the preparation of MMMs as well as convenient for the removal of BOD and COD from polluted water sources.

Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel-coated nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high-flux and permselectivity were prepared. The coating of PVA and SA hydrogel selective layer on a porous polysulfone (PSf)/non-woven fabric ultrafiltration substrate membrane was conducted through different three procedures including pre-crosslinking, in-situ crosslinking, and immersing crosslinking and the use of glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. The properties and performances of all types of the prepared membranes were evaluated through ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, AFM, SEM, zeta potential, contact angle, and cross-flow permeation tests. The immersing technique resulted in the formation of TFC membranes with higher hydrophilicity, smoother surface layer, higher negative charge, higher permeation flux, higher salt rejection and better anti-fouling performance. Also, the higher negative surface charge of the immersing coated TFC membranes due to dissociation of hydrophilic functional groups of the PVA and SA hydrogel selective layer resulted in higher As(III) rejection. SA coated NF membrane through immersing method exhibited a higher pure water permeability of 11.2 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, NaCl, MgSO4, and Na2SO4 rejection of 38.2%, 55.1%, and 70.4%, respectively with As(III) rejection of 60.6%. All types of the PVA and SA hydrogel-coated PSf membranes possessed improved fouling resistance to BSA aqueous solution, superior anti-fouling performance was obtained with SA hydrogel coating through immersing method. Such optimum membranes indicated high stability in the long-term experiments. This study showed that the coating of the SA hydrogel layer on a PSf support through immersing method could be a promising candidate for fabricating high-flux NF membranes.

Abstract
In this research, poly terephthalic acid-co-glycerol-g-maleic anhydride (PTGM) graft co-polymer was used as novel water-soluble pore formers for polyethersulfone (PES) membrane modification. The modified PES membranes were characterized to monitor the effect of PTGM content on their pure water flux, hydrophilicity, porosity, morphological structure, composition, and performance. PTGM and PES/PTGM membranes were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and contact angle (CA). The results revealed that the porosity and hydrophilicity of the fabricated membrane formed using a 5 wt.% PTGM ratio exhibited an enhancement of 20% and 18%, respectively. Similarly, upon raising the PTGM ratio in the casting solution, a more porous with longer finger-like structure was observed. However, at optimum PTGM content (i.e., 5%), apparent enhancements in the water flux, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and sodium alginate (SA) retention were noticed by values of 203 L/m2.h (LMH), 94, and 96%, respectively. These results illustrated that the observed separation and permeation trend of the PES/PTGM membrane may be a suitable option for applications of wastewater treatment. The experimental results suggest the promising potential of PTGM as a pore former on the membrane properties and performance.

Abstract
In order to solve the problems of poor mechanical property, non-antibacterial and low flux of calcium alginate (CaAlg) membrane, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) for improving CaAlg membrane in this paper. Meanwhile, the dispersion property of silver nanoparticles and the mechanical property, thermal stability, antibacterial property and filtration efficiency of the composite membrane were explored. The results illustrated CMCS observably strengthened the mechanical property and thermal stability of the composite membrane, and AgNPs endowed the composite membrane with excellent antibacterial property. The flux of the BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg composite membrane was raised compared to CaAlg membrane. Finally, the viscose fiber/polyethylene terephthalate fiber (VF-PET) nonwoven fabric was introduced as the support layer to further improve the filtration flux and mechanical property of the composite membrane. VF-PET/BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg membrane had a rejection rate of over 99.0 % for dye molecules and <9.0 % for salt ions, while the flux maintained 38.5 L·m-2·h-1. Furthermore, VF-PET/BSA/CMCS/AgNPs/CaAlg membrane also had excellent separation effect on actual dye wastewater. The separation of dye and salt by the membrane mainly depended on the screening mechanism of membrane pore size, rather than adsorption. The composite membrane had an outstanding performance on the separation of dye molecules and inorganic salt ions.

Abstract
In the face of the growing global water crisis, membrane technology is a promising means of purifying water and wastewater. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used to improve membrane performance, for antibiofouling, and to aid in photocatalytic degradation, thermal response, and electro-conductivity. However, several critical issues such as short antimicrobial periods, trade-off effects and silver inactivation seriously restrict the engineering application of AgNPs-incorporated membranes. In addition, there is controversy around the use of AgNPs given the toxic preparation process and environmental/biological risks. Hence, it is of great significance to summarize and analyze the recent developments and critical challenges in the use of AgNPs-incorporated membranes in water and wastewater treatment, and to propose potential solutions. We reviewed the different properties and functions of AgNPs and their corresponding applications in AgNPs-incorporated membranes. Recently, multifunctional, novel AgNP-incorporated membranes combined with other functional materials have been developed with high-performance. We further clarified the synergistic mechanisms between AgNPs and these novel nanomaterials and/or polymers, and elucidated their functions and roles in membrane separation. Finally, the critical challenges of AgNPs-incorporated membranes and the proposed solutions were outlined: i) Prolonging the antimicrobial cycle through long-term and controlled AgNPs release; ii) Overcoming the trade-off effect and organic fouling of the AgNPs-incorporated membranes; iii) Preparation of sustainable AgNPs-incorporated membranes; iv) Addressing biotoxicity induced by AgNPs; and v) Deactivation of AgNPs-incorporated membrane. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive discussion of the advancements and challenges of AgNPs-incorporated membranes and guides the development of more robust, multi-functional and sustainable AgNPs-incorporated membranes.

Abstract
This work presents poly(terephthalic-co-glycerol-g-fumaric acid) (TGF) as a novel water-soluble polymeric nano-additive for the modification of a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane. The TGF was harnessed as a pore former, aiming to improve the membrane surface porosity and hydrophilicity. Modified membranes were characterized to observe the influence of varying the TGF content on their hydrophilicity, porosity, morphological structure, and composition, as well as their entire performance. The results disclosed that porosity and hydrophilicity of the modified membrane prepared using 4 wt.% TGF content recorded an enhancement by 24% and 38%, respectively. Herein, the lower contact angle was mainly a reflection of the improved porosity, but not of the hydrophilic nature of water-soluble TGF. Furthermore, upon increasing the TGF content in the polymeric matrix, a more porous structure with longer finger-like micropores was formed. Moreover, a sponge-like layer clearly appeared near the bottom surface. Nevertheless, at optimum TGF content (4%), a clear enhancement in the water flux and BSA retention was witnessed by values of 298 LMH and 97%, respectively. These results demonstrate that the obtained permeation and separation behavior of the PES/TGF membrane could stand as a promising choice for water and wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract
The Mil-125(Ti)-CS nanocomposite was successfully synthesized and characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Then, to improve the membrane performance, the synthesized Mil-125(Ti)-CS nanocomposite was embedded into the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane matrix. The nanofiltration membranes were fabricated via phase inversion method. Presence of chitosan in the structure of Mil-125(Ti) has increased the compatibility of nanoparticles with the polymer and also improved the hydrophilicity of the resulted membranes. The water contact angle of bare membrane (58°) was reduced to 40° by blending of 1 wt% nanocomposite led to increasing the pure water flux. However, the incorporation of more than 1 wt% of the nanocomposite caused the accumulation of nanocomposites and this was reduced the pore radius and permeability. The membrane containing 1 wt% nanocomposite was displayed the highest flux recovery ratio (FRR) ∼ 98% in bovine serum albumin (BSA) filtration. The membranes containing Mil-125(Ti)-CS also showed good performance against fouling. The performance of membranes was evaluated by treatment of six reactive dyes, antibiotic (cefixime), heavy metal, NaCl and Na2SO4 solutions. Addition of Mil-125(Ti)-CS NPs at low concentrations resulted in membranes with high pure water flux, higher separation efficiency, and remarkable anti-fouling behavior.

Abstract
Owing to the specific porous structure which could provide additional passage channel for some molecules, metal organic frameworks are attractive candidates for enhancing permeability and selectivity of membranes in pervaporation, reverse osmosis, and gas separation. In this experiment, Ag@UiO-66-NH2 was introduced into polyamide separation layer by interfacial polymerization of triethylenetetramine and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid chloride for nanofiltration. The results indicated that Ag@UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles did endow the membranes with rapid diffusion pathways for water molecules. When the content of Ag@UiO-66-NH2 was 0.03 g, the prepared membrane (NF-Ag-3) showed high flux about 47.3 L·m-2·h-1 at 0.6 MPa, which is about 2-fold higher than that of polyamide membrane without Ag@UiO-66-NH2, while the MgSO4 rejection rate remained about 87.4%. The membrane also showed excellent antifouling properties, and the water flux recovery ratio was 95.6% after filtration BSA solution. When it was applied for 50 mg/L bisphenol A removal, the rejection rate reached 94.6%, and the flux is about 49.1 L·m-2·h-1. Moreover, Ag particles on UiO-66-NH2 rendered the membrane with good inhibition for Escherichia coli. The antibacterial rate of the membranes is above 95% when the loading of Ag@UiO-66-NH2 is more than 0.03 g.

Abstract
Abstract
Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have been widely developed as an attractive solution to overcome the drawbacks found in most polymer membranes, such as permeability-selectivity trade-off and low physicochemical stability. Numerous fillers based on inorganic, organic, and hybrid materials with various structures including porous or nonporous, and two-dimensional or three-dimensional, have been used. Demanded to further improve the characteristics and performances of the MMMs, the use of dual-filler instead of a single filler has then been proposed, from which multiple effects could be obtained. This article aims to review the recent development of MMMs with dual filler and discuss their performances in diverse potential applications. Challenges in this emerging field and outlook for future research are finally provided.

Abstract
The blending of nanomaterials into a polymeric matrix is a method known for its ability, under certain circumstances, to lead to an improvement in membrane properties. TiO2 nanoparticles have been used in membrane research for the last 20 years and have continuously shown promise in this field of research. Polysulfone (PSf) membranes were obtained through the phase inversion method, with different TiO2 nanoparticle concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt.%) and two types of TiO2 crystalline structure (anatase and rutile), via the addition of commercially available nanopowders. Research showed improvement in all studied properties. In particular, the 0.5 wt.% TiO2 rutile membrane recorded an increase in permeability of 139.7% compared to the control membrane. In terms of overall performance, the best nanocomposite membrane demonstrated a performance index increase of 71.1% compared with the control membrane.

Abstract
For many decades, titanium dioxide (TiO2) semiconductor has been extensively applied in several environmental applications due to its higher photocatalytic performances toward different organic pollutants, pharmaceutical compounds, and bacteria. However, its shortfall response to visible light, and the expeditious recombination rate of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, hampers its utilization. Doping TiO2 semiconductor with silver nanoparticles is a sound strategy to (1) extend its photocatalytic activity to visible light, (2) prevent the electron/holes pairs recombination due to the formation of the Schottky barrier at the interfaces with TiO2 that act as an electron-trapping center, and (3) enhance its bactericide performances. This review focuses on the recent progress on silver-doped titanium dioxide (Ag/TiO2)-based photocatalysts. It addresses a wide range of Ag/TiO2 synthesis techniques, their physicochemical properties and discusses thoroughly the important role of silver (Ag) nanoparticles in enhancing the removal capacity and antibacterial performances of the Ag/TiO2 photocatalysts.

Abstract
Although zwitterion nanomaterials exhibit outstanding antifouling property, hemocompatibility, and antibacterial activity, their poor solubility in organic solvents limits their practical applications. In the present study, natural lysine (amino acids) was surface-grafted onto one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) through an epoxy ring opening in which the 3-glycidyloxypropyl (dimethoxy) methyl silane was used as a coupling agent. Chemical binding and morphological studies, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, were conducted to confirm the successful grafting of lysine onto the TiO2 NFs. The lysine-grafted TiO2 NF-polyethersulfone (PES) membrane induced electrostatic interactions and increased the surface charges from -28 to 16 mV in ζ-potential analysis. The lysine exhibited zwitterion characteristics owing to the presence of amino (cations) and carboxyl (anions) functional groups. Moreover, the modified TiO2-PES zwitterion membranes exhibited good water flux performances compared to the pristine membrane. ZT-4 membrane displayed the highest water fluxand bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of 137 ± 1.8 L m-2 h-1 and 94 ± 1%, respectively. The cell viability results revealed that the zwitterion PES membrane had excellent biocompatibility with peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The present work offers a convenient strategy to improve the hydrophilicity, antifouling property, and hemocompatibility of modified TiO2-PES zwitterion membranes for their biomedical and blood-contacting applications such as hemodialysis.

Abstract
Microalgae cultivation using open cultivation systems requires large area and it is susceptible to contamination as well as weather changes. Meanwhile, the closed systems require large capital investment, and they are susceptible to the build-up of dissolved oxygen. Air-liquid interface culture systems with low water-footprint, but high packing density can be used for microalgae cultivation if low-cost culture scaffolds are available. In this study, cellulose-based scaffolds were synthesized using NaOH/urea aqueous solution as the solvent. Titanium dioxide (TiO2), silica gel and polyethylene glycol 1000 (PEG 1000) nanoparticles were added into the membrane scaffolds to increase the hydrophilicity of nutrient absorbing to support the growth of microalgae. The membrane scaffolds were characterized by FTIR, SEM, contact angle, porosity and porometry. All three nanoparticles additives showed their ability in reducing the contact angle of membrane scaffolds from 63.4 ± 2.3° to a range of 52.6 ± 1.2° to 38.8 ± 1.5° due to the hydrophilic properties of the nanoparticles. The decreasing in pore size when nanoparticles were added did not affect the porosity of membrane scaffolds. Cellulose membrane scaffold with TiO2 showed the highest percentage of microalgae Navicula incerta growth rate of 22.1% because of the antibacterial properties of TiO2 in lowering the risk of cell contamination and enhancing the growth of N. incerta. The results exhibited that cellulose-based scaffold with TiO2 added could be an effective support in plant cell culture field.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a photocatalytic material used to degrade ethylene, and it has been studied as an alternative postharvest technology. Although several studies have indicated the effective action of TiO2 photocatalysis for delaying the fruit ripening, photocatalytic systems need to be well-designed for this application. Fruit is susceptible to environmental conditions like temperature, relative humidity, atmosphere composition and exposure to UV-light. This fragility associated with its variable ethylene production rate over its maturation stage limits the photocatalysis parameters optimization. Thus, this review aims to detail the reaction mechanisms, set-up, advantages, and limitations of TiO2 photocatalytic systems based on polymers-TiO2 nanocomposites and reactors containing TiO2 immobilized into inorganic supports designed for fruit applications. It is expected that this review can elucidate the fundamental aspects that should be considered for the use of these systems.

Abstract
Photocatalysis is an effective and environmentally friendly approach for degrading organic pollutants, particularly in scenarios where sunlight can be utilized as the energy source. Opportunities are emerging to apply materials and methods from photocatalytic pollutant degradation to address the challenge of fouling. Membrane fouling, attributed to organic foulants, is a prevalent problem for all membrane-based technologies and represents a major deleterious impact on membrane performance. Integration of tactics developed in photocatalysis more broadly to membranes reveals new strategies for membrane fouling control-an approach taken by an increasing number of researchers. This review summarizes key developments in photocatalytic materials and methods in water treatment and presents recent progress in the development of processes for photocatalytic alleviation of membrane fouling, including photocatalyst design and modification strategies aimed at enhancing photocatalytic efficiency, as well as different configurations of photocatalysis-membrane systems (PMS). Perspectives on future research and development opportunities for photocatalytic membrane fouling control are also provided.

Abstract
Pathogenic microorganisms can spread throughout the world population, as the current COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically demonstrated. In this scenario, a protection against pathogens and other microorganisms can come from the use of photoactive materials as antimicrobial agents able to hinder, or at least limit, their spreading by means of photocatalytically assisted processes activated by light—possibly sunlight—promoting the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can kill microorganisms in different matrices such as water or different surfaces without affecting human health. In this review, we focus the attention on TiO2 nanoparticle-based antimicrobial materials, intending to provide an overview of the most promising synthetic techniques, toward possible large-scale production, critically review the capability of such materials to promote pathogen (i.e., bacteria, virus, and fungi) inactivation, and, finally, take a look at selected technological applications.
