Abstract
The efficient cleanup of crude oil spills is a worldwide problem due to their high viscosity and low fluidity. Under the assistance of solar radiation, adsorbents with in situ heating function are becoming the ideal candidates to solve this problem. In this study, a new strategy coupling a polyurethane (PU) sponge with phase change materials (PCMs) is proposed to realize the efficient utilization of solar energy and crude oil cleanup. Wormlike carbon nanotubes/mesoporous carbon (CNTs/MC) with a core-shell structure was used to encapsulate polyethylene glycol (PEG), which was then introduced into the PU sponge for photothermal conversion and thermal storage. After coating with a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer, the sponge was further endowed with hydrophobic characteristics. Additionally, PDMS can function as a binder between PEG@CNTs/MC and sponge skeleton. The resulting PEG@CNTs/MC/PU/PDMS (named as PEG@CMPP) exhibited excellent photothermal conversion and high absorption capacity for high-viscosity crude oil. Most importantly, thanks to the heat storage properties of PEG, the stored heat can be sustainably transferred to the surrounding crude oil to promote its continuous absorption even under insufficient light intensity conditions. The crude oil absorption capacity of PEG@CMPP-3 reached approximately 0.96 g/cm3 even after the light source was removed, which manifested the distinctive advantages compared to the conventional photothermal adsorbent. The proposed approach integrates the high efficiency of solar-assisted heating and energy-conserving advantage, thereby providing a feasible strategy for highly efficient remediation of viscous crude oil spills.

Abstract
Water pollution, which is caused by leakage of oily substances, has been recognized as one of the most serious global environmental pollutions endangering the ecosystem. High-quality porous materials with superwettability, which are typically constructed in the form of aerogels, hold huge potential in the field of adsorption and removal of oily substances form water. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to fabricate a novel biomass absorbent with a layered tubular/sheet structure for efficient oil/water separation. The aerogels were fabricated by assembling hollow poplar catkin fiber into chitosan sheets using a directional freeze-drying method. The obtained aerogels were further wrapped with -CH3-ended siloxane structures using CH3SiCl3. This superhydrophobic aerogel (CA ≈ 154 ± 0.4°) could rapidly trap and remove oils from water with a large sorption range of 33.06-73.22 g/g. The aerogel facilitated stable oil recovery (90.07-92.34%) by squeezing after 10 sorption-desorption cycles because of its mechanical robustness (91.76% strain remaining after 50 compress-release cycles). The novel design, low cost, and sustainability of the aerogel provide an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for handling oil spills.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Due to the complexity and the low concentrations of volatile components in aromatic plants, sample pretreatment is an important step in the whole analytical procedure. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to propose a novel, sensitive and fast approach to determine the volatile components in lavender. METHODS The 1-butyl-3-(propyltrimethoxysilane)imidazolium chloride ([BPtmsim]Cl) ionic liquid was introduced onto the surface of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare a novel PDMS/[BPtmsim]Cl sponge with large surface area, good sorption performance, and reusability. A solid-phase extraction method was developed based on PDMS/[BPtmsim]Cl sponge combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). RESULTS The effects of the various experimental parameters on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The optimal conditions were [BPtmsim]Cl amount of 0.3 g, 1:4 as the mass ratio of PDMS/[BPtmsim]Cl to lavender sample, microwave power of 700 W, microwave time of 10 min, and n-hexane as the desorption solvent. The method validation results showed good linearity (10-800 μg/ml), high correlation coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.9991), low limits of detection (1.73-2.50 ng/μl), and limits of quantification (4.10-5.11 ng/μl). The interday and intraday precision with relative standard deviation (RSD) values were below 1.93% and 4.71%, respectively. Under the optimal extraction conditions, 16 lavender samples from three different species were analysed and a total of 57 volatile compounds were identified. The correlation between different species of lavender and volatile components was explored using principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). CONCLUSION The results showed that PDMS/[BPtmsim]Cl extraction is a rapid, highly efficient, and sensitive technique for the determination of volatile components in complex plant samples.

Abstract
A novel approach based on polydimethylsiloxane/graphene oxide/deep eutectic solvent (PDMS/GO/DES) sponge headspace solid phase extraction followed by GC-MS was successfully developed to determine the volatile components in cumin. The PDMS/GO/DES exhibits outstanding properties with high adsorption capacity and good chemical stability, and has shown its potentiality as an ideal adsorbent for the extraction of volatile compounds. The influence factors of the extraction process were investigated. Excellent analytical performances were achieved, including wide linearity (0.60-107.72 ng) with high correlation coefficients (R2 ≥ 0.9951), low LODs (0.23-9.23 ng) and LOQs (0.54-18.47 ng), satisfactory precision (intra-day RSDs ≤ 2.85% and inter-day RSDs ≤ 3.92%). Under the optimal extraction conditions, the volatile components in 17 cumin samples from four origins in Xinjiang were analyzed and 31 compounds were identified. PCA was used to establish the relationship between the origins and the volatile compounds for further discriminant analysis. The results showed that the PDMS/GO/DES method was a rapid, simple and sensitive technique for the analysis of volatile components in spices.

Abstract
Efficient and safe recovery of high-viscosity marine crude oil spills is still a worldwide challenge. High-viscosity crude oil is difficult to be removed by traditional adsorbent materials. Although some recent developments in photothermal or electric-thermal oil-absorbing materials, the vertical heat transfer inside and the potential hazard of electrical leakage are difficult to be guaranteed. In order to overcome these problems, we polymerized dopamine (DA) in situ on the skeleton surface of the commercial melamine sponge (MS), and further coated the full-wavelength light-absorbing Fe3O4 NPs-Graphene (HF-G) on it to obtain the superhydrophobic sponge with excellent photothermal conversion effect, heat conductivity and magnetic heating capabilities (HF-G/PDA@MS). When the thickness of sponge is 5 mm, the HF-G/PDA@MS shows excellent vertical heat conductivity ability, and can absorb about 80 g/g. It also can be combined with an extra electric-heating device to achieve continuous heating to reduce the viscosity and recover crude oil at night or extreme weather. In addition, the temperature of HF-G/PDA@MS can reach about 40 °C by electromagnetic induction heater, indicating that we can use multiple energies-assisted modes to heat the HF-G/PDA@MS to. This work provides a promising solution and theoretical support for all-weather solving offshore crude oil spills pollution and recovery.

Abstract
Developing an emulsion separation material with one-step in-situ purifying capability and improved security in applications, especially for subsequent scale-up, is valuable but remains a challenge. Herein, the amphiphilic sponge (PA@RGO@MS) was prepared via impregnation and in-situ growth of the negatively charged hydrophilic phytic acid (PA) and the hydrophobic reduced graphene oxide (RGO) on the surface of the melamine sponge (MS) and applied in emulsion purification. The mechanics, wettability, absorption performance of the PA@RGO@MS were analyzed to identify its potential for stable demulsification. Results show that the PA@RGO@MS could purify emulsions (turbidity removal rate = 99.7%; TOC removal rate = 94.14%) in-situ in one step by simple shock absorption, profited from the hydrophilic and demulsification capability of PA, oil absorption of RGO, and wide reaction and storage space of MS. Targeting the emulsion with distinct properties (density, viscosity, and concentration) of the oil phase, the PA@RGO@MS could efficiently enable the purification. Meanwhile, the powerful flame-retardant granted from PA ensures the safe shipment and storage of sponges. The favorable cyclability (turbidity removal rate > 98.5% and TOC removal rate > 89.5% after 10 cycles) and diversified operating modes enhance the practical value of the PA@RGO@MS.

Abstract
The development of capacitive pressure sensors with low cost, high sensitivity and facile fabrication techniques is desirable for flexible electronics and wearable devices. In this project, a highly sensitive and flexible capacitive pressure sensor was fabricated by sandwiching a porous PAP sponge dielectric layer between two copper electrodes. The porous PAP sponge dielectric layer was fabricated by introducing highly conductive silver nanowires (AgNWs) into the PDMS sponge with 100% sucrose as a template and with a layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film coating the surface. The sensitivity of the PAP sponge capacitive pressure sensor was optimized by increasing the load amount of AgNWs. Experimental results demonstrated that when the load amount of AgNWs increased to 150 mg in the PAP sponge, the sensitivity of the sensor was the highest in the low-pressure range of 0–1 kPa, reaching 0.62 kPa−1. At this point, the tensile strength and elongation of sponge were 1.425 MPa and 156.38%, respectively. In addition, the specific surface area of PAP sponge reached 2.0 cm2/g in the range of 0–10 nm pore size, and showed excellent waterproof performance with high elasticity, low hysteresis, light weight, and low density. Furthermore, as an application demonstration, ~110 LED lights were shown to light up when pressed onto the optimized sensor. Hence, this novel porous PAP-sponge-based capacitive pressure sensor has a wide range of potential applications in the field of wearable electronics.

Abstract
Oily wastewater has become one of the leading causes of environmental pollution. A massive quantity of oily wastewater is released from industries, oil spills, and routine activities, endangering the ecosystem's sustainability. Due to the enormous negative impact, researchers put strenuous efforts into developing a sustainable solution to treat oily wastewater. Microfiltration/ultrafiltration membranes are considered an efficient solution to treat oily wastewater due to their low cost, small footprint, facile operation, and high separation efficiencies. However, membranes severely fouled during the separation process due to oil's adsorption and cake layer formation, which shortens the membranes' life. This review has critically discussed the microfiltration/ultrafiltration membrane synthesizing methods and their emulsion's separation performance. In the end, key challenges and their possible solutions are highlighted to provide future direction to synthesize next-generation membranes.

Low-Cost Multifunctional Vacuum Chamber for Manufacturing PDMS Based Composites. MACHINES 2022. [DOI: 10.3390/machines10020092] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/01/2023]
Abstract
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the best known elastomers and has been used in several areas of activity, due to its excellent characteristics and properties, such as biocompatibility, flexibility, optical transparency and chemical stability. Furthermore, PDMS modified with other materials promotes the desired changes to broaden its range of applications in various fields of science. However, the heating, mixing and degassing steps of the manufacturing process have not received much attention in recent years when it comes to blending with solid materials. For instance, PDMS has been extensively studied in combination with waxes, which are frequently in a solid state at room temperature and as a result the interaction and manufacturing process are extremely complex and can compromise the desired material. Thus, in this work it is proposed a multifunctional vacuum chamber (MVC) with the aim to improve and accelerate the manufacturing process of PDMS composites combined with additives, blends and different kinds of solid materials. The MVC developed in this work allows to control the mixing speed parameters, temperature control and internal pressure. In addition, it is a low cost equipment and can be used for other possible modifications with different materials and processes with the ability to control those parameters. As a result, samples fabricated by using the MVC can achieve a time improvement over 133% at the heating and mixing step and approximately 200% at the last degassing step. Regarding the complete manufacturing process, it is possible to achieve an improvement over 150%, when compared with the conventional manufacturing process. When compared to maximum tensile strength, specimens manufactured using the MVC have shown a 39% and 65% improvement in maximum strain. The samples have also shown a 9% improvement in transparency at room temperature and 12% at a temperature of about 75 °C. It should be noted that the proposed MVC can be used for other blends and manufacturing processes where it is desirable to control the temperature, agitation speed and pressure.

Abstract
The suitability and efficacy of three-dimensional (3D) graphene, including its derivatives, have garnered widespread attention towards the development of novel, sustainable materials with ecological amenability. This is especially relevant towards its utilization as adsorbents of wastewater contaminants, such as heavy metals, dyes, and oil, which could be majorly attributed to its noteworthy physicochemical features, particularly elevated chemical and mechanical robustness, advanced permeability, as well as large specific surface area. In this review, we emphasize on the adsorptive elimination of oil particles from contaminated water. Specifically, we assess and collate recent literature on the conceptualization and designing stages of 3D graphene-based adsorbents (3DGBAs) towards oil adsorption, including their applications in either batch or continuous modes. In addition, we analytically evaluate the adsorption mechanism, including sorption sites, physical properties, surface chemistry of 3DGBA and interactions between the adsorbent and adsorbate involving the adsorptive removal of oil, as well as numerous effects of adsorption conditions on the adsorption performance, i.e. pH, temperature, initial concentration of oil contaminants and adsorbent dosage. Furthermore, we focus on the equilibrium isotherms and kinetic studies, in order to comprehend the oil elimination procedures. Lastly, we designate encouraging avenues and recommendations for a perpetual research thrust, and outline the associated future prospects and perspectives.

Abstract
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the most promising elastomers due its remarkable proprieties such as good thermal stability, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, flexibility, low cost, ease of use, chemically inertia, hyperplastic characteristics, and gas permeability. Thus, it can be used in areas such as microfluidic systems, biomedical devices, electronic components, membranes for filtering and pervaporation, sensors, and coatings. Although pure PDMS has low mechanical properties, such as low modulus of elasticity and strength, it can be improved by mixing the PDMS with other polymers and by adding particles or reinforcements. Fiber-reinforced PDMS has proved to be a good alternative to manufacturing flexible displays, batteries, wearable devices, tactile sensors, and energy harvesting systems. PDMS and particulates are often used in the separation of liquids from wastewater by means of porosity followed by hydrophobicity. Waxes such as beeswax and paraffin have proved to be materials capable of improving properties such as the hydrophobic, corrosion-resistant, thermal, and optical properties of PDMS. Finally, when blended with polymers such as poly (vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate), PDMS becomes a highly efficient alternative for membrane separation applications. However, to the best of our knowledge there are few works dedicated to the review and comparison of different PDMS composites. Hence, this review will be focused on PDMS composites, their respective applications, and properties. Generally, the combination of elastomer with fibers, particles, waxes, polymers, and others it will be discussed, with the aim of producing a review that demonstrates the wide applications of this material and how tailored characteristics can be reached for custom applications.

Abstract
A superhydrophobic fluorinated silica functionalized chitosan (F-CS) aerogel is constructed and fabricated by a simple and sustainable method in this study in order to achieve highly efficient gravity-driven oil/water separation performance. The fluorinated silica functionalization invests the pristine hydrophilic chitosan (CS) aerogel with promising superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 151.9°. This novel F-CS aerogel possesses three-dimensional structure with high porosity as well as good chemical stability and mechanical compression property. Moreover, it also shows striking self-cleaning performance and great oil adsorption capacity. Most importantly, the as-prepared aerogels exhibits fast and efficient separation of oil/water mixture by the gravity driven process with high separation efficiency. These great performances render the prepared F-CS aerogel a good candidate for oil/water separation in practical industrial application.

Abstract
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a polymer that has attracted the attention of researchers due to its unique properties such as transparency, biocompatibility, high flexibility, and physical and chemical stability. In addition, PDMS modification and combination with other materials can expand its range of applications. For instance, the ability to perform superhydrophobic coating allows for the manufacture of lenses. However, many of these processes are complex and expensive. One of the most promising modifications, which consists of the development of an interchangeable coating, capable of changing its optical characteristics according to some stimuli, has been underexplored. Thus, we report an experimental study of the mechanical and optical properties and wettability of pure PDMS and of two PDMS composites with the addition of 1% paraffin or beeswax using a gravity casting process. The composites’ tensile strength and hardness were lower when compared with pure PDMS. However, the contact angle was increased, reaching the highest values when using the paraffin additive. Additionally, these composites have shown interesting results for the spectrophotometry tests, i.e., the material changed its optical characteristics when heated, going from opaque at room temperature to transparent, with transmittance around 75%, at 70 °C. As a result, these materials have great potential for use in smart devices, such as sensors, due to its ability to change its transparency at high temperatures.
