Abstract
In Italy, 1400 children and 800 adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every year. About 80% of them can be cured but are at high risk of experiencing severe side effects, many of which respond to rehabilitation treatment. Due to the paucity of literature on this topic, the Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology organized a Consensus Conference on the role of rehabilitation of motor impairments in children/adolescents affected by leukemia, central nervous system tumors, and bone cancer to state recommendations to improve clinical practice. This paper includes the consensus on the rehabilitation of children and adolescents with these cancers.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Prehabilitation, or "prehab," helps patients optimize strength, function, and nutrition before surgery. This evidence-based practice project presents strategies for implementing a prehab program to prepare patients for spinal surgery. Nurses play an integral role in educating patients preoperatively about the myriad lifestyle changes associated with spinal surgery.

Abstract
Disparities in care access for health conditions where physiotherapy can play a major role are abetting health inequities. Spatial analyses can contribute to illuminating inequities in health yet the geographic accessibility to physiotherapy care across New Zealand has not been examined. This population-based study evaluated the accessibility of the New Zealand physiotherapy workforce relative to the population at a local scale. The locations of 5,582 physiotherapists were geocoded and integrated with 2018 Census data to generate 'accessibility scores' for each Statistical Area 2 using the newer 3-step floating catchment area method. For examining the spatial distribution and mapping, accessibility scores were categorized into seven levels, centered around 0.5 SD above and below the mean. New Zealand has an above-average physiotherapy-to-population ratio compared with other OECD countries; however, this workforce is maldistributed. This study identified areas (and locations) where geographic accessibility to physiotherapy care is relatively low.

Abstract
PURPOSE Exercise prehabilitation aims to increase preoperative fitness, reduce post-operative complications, and improve health-related quality of life. For prehabilitation to work, access to an effective programme which is acceptable to stakeholders is vital. The aim was to explore acceptability of exercise prehabilitation before cancer surgery among key stakeholders specifically patients, family members and healthcare providers. METHODS A mixed-methods approach (questionnaire and semi-structured interview) underpinned by the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability was utilised. Composite acceptability score, (summation of acceptability constructs and a single-item overall acceptability construct), and median of each construct was calculated. Correlation analysis between the single-item overall acceptability and each construct was completed. Qualitative data was analysed using deductive and inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS 244 participants completed the questionnaire and n=31 completed interviews. Composite acceptability was comparable between groups (p=0.466). Four constructs positively correlated with overall acceptability: affective attitude (r=0.453), self-efficacy (r=0.399), ethicality (r=0.298) and intervention coherence (r=0.281). Qualitative data confirmed positive feelings, citing psychological benefits including a sense of control. Participants felt flexible prehabilitation program would be suitable for everyone, identifying barriers and facilitators to reduce burden. CONCLUSION Exercise prehabilitation is highly acceptable to key stakeholders. Despite some burden, it is a worthwhile and effective intervention. Stakeholders understand its purpose, are confident in patients' ability to participate, and regard it is an important intervention contributing to patients' psychological and physical wellbeing. IMPLICATIONS •Introduction should be comprehensively designed and clearly presented, providing appropriate information and opportunity for questions. •Programmes should be patient-centred, designed to overcome barriers and address patients' specific needs and goals. •Service must be appropriately resourced with a clear referral-pathway.

Abstract
AIMS Prehabilitation is a process of identifying and assessing factors that could compromise the physical and psychological health of patients undergoing cancer treatment and implementing an intervention to combat such concerns. The use of prehabilitation in cancer surgery has yielded positive outcomes in rectal, lung and abdominal cancers. Prehabilitation strategies have potential to improve the management of patients receiving radiation therapy or chemoradiation. The aim of the present study was to map the evidence of the assessment and evaluation of prehabilitation for radiation therapy patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A database search using EMBASE and PubMed was conducted. The PRISMA guidelines were adhered to. Keywords included prehabilitation, radiation therapy/radiotherapy, chemoradiotherapy/chemoradiation, intervention and exercise. Types of prehabilitation strategy, their purposes and impact, according to cancer site, were analysed. RESULTS Prehabilitation is most commonly evaluated in head and neck cancer, whereby unimodal, physical interventions manage dysphagia. Prehabilitation for lung cancer demonstrated its ability to widen treatment options for patients. Physical prehabilitation is administered to combat adverse effects of neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy in patients with rectal cancer. CONCLUSION Prehabilitation is adaptive and tailored to specific patient and site needs; thus it is applied across a wide range of cancer sites. More interventions by which radiation therapy is the definitive treatment modality and larger sample sizes within these studies are warranted to increase prehabilitation utilisation for patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This is the second article in this series on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) and ANPs (advanced nurse practitioners) regarding prehabilitation advice in oncology patients, exploring the barriers and facilitators to giving prehabilitation advice by CNSs and ANPs in oncology patients. METHODS A Cross-sectional online questionnaire opens for 3 months to establish the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of ANPs and CNSs to prehabilitation disseminated through professional organisations and social media. RESULTS The questionnaire gained (n = 415) responses. Prehabilitation advice was routinely given by 89% (n = 371) of respondents. Many (60%) identified a lack of guidance and referral processes as a barrier to giving prehabilitation advice; this corresponded between respondents' confidence to give prehabilitation advice and subsequent referrals (< 0.001). Other factors included time (61%), a lack of patient interest (44%) and limited relevance to patients (35%). CONCLUSION The implementation of standardised nurse prehabilitation advice resources would enable CNSs and ANPs to provide personalised prehabilitation advice in their consultations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The surgical intervention serves as the paramount and prevalent remedy for individuals afflicted with colorectal malignancies, with the significance of perioperative stewardship and convalescence being indisputable. Prehabilitation coupled with preoperative lifestyle modulation has demonstrated efficacy in patients subjected to certain classifications of abdominal procedures. However, the evidence pertaining to its impact on those battling colorectal cancer remains equivocal. METHODS A meta-analysis, grounded in pairwise contrast, of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was orchestrated, coupled with a systematic review, to probe the efficacy of preoperative lifestyle modulation and prehabilitation on patients' postoperative functionality and recuperation. An exhaustive exploration of 8 electronic databases and trial registries was undertaken to encompass all pertinent RCTs disseminated in English or Chinese from January 2012 through December 2022. Employing a random-effects model, we evaluated parameters such as the 6-minute walk test (6 MWT), complications, quality of life (QoL), aggregate and postoperative duration of hospitalization (tLHS and postLHS), and healthcare expenditure (HExp) for postoperative patients. RESULTS A total of 28 RCTs were incorporated into the systematic review and meta-analysis. Relative to conventional preoperative care, rehabilitation or preoperative lifestyle management was found to enhance postoperative 6MWT (SMD 1.30, 95% CI 0.30 to 2.29) and diminish the complication rate (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.69). Nonetheless, no significant discrepancies were observed in QoL (SMD 1.81, 95% CI -0.26 to 3.87), tLHS (SMD -0.26, 95% CI -0.68 to 0.15), and postLHS (SMD -1.46, 95% CI -3.12 to 0.20) between the groups. HExp could not be evaluated due to a lack of sufficient data for synthesis. Most pooled outcomes exhibited significant heterogeneity, urging a cautious interpretation. Subgroup analysis revealed that nutritional interventions could mitigate the incidence of complications, and preoperative exercise could improve tLHS and postLHS. A combined approach of physical, nutritional, and psychological intervention or prehabilitation proved superior to any single intervention in enhancing postoperative capabilities. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis delineated the efficacy of preoperative interventions on postoperative capabilities in patients with colorectal cancer, thereby offering evidence for clinical practice. It was concluded that preoperative interventions are unequivocally beneficial for postoperative functional recovery and the reduction of complication rates in patients with colorectal cancer. Nonetheless, the acquisition of more high-level evidence is still necessitated to further ascertain the effectiveness of this strategy for other patient groups and to establish its best practices. The heterogeneity in the pooled outcomes underlines the need for future studies to be more uniform in their design and reporting, which would facilitate more robust and reliable meta-analyses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prehabilitation programs focusing on exercise training as the main component are known as a promising alternative for improving patients' outcomes before cancer surgery. This systematic review determined the benefits and harms of prehabilitation programs compared with usual care for individuals with cancer. METHODS We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE from inception to June 2022, and hand searched clinical trial registries. We included randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) in adults, survivors of any type of cancer, that compared prehabilitation programs that had exercise training as the major component with usual care or other active interventions. Outcome measures were health-related quality of life (HRQL), muscular strength, postoperative complications, average length of stay (ALOS), handgrip strength, and physical activity levels. Two reviewers independently screened the studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias and the certainty of the evidence. RESULTS Twenty-five RCTs (2682 participants) published between 2010 and 2022 met our inclusion criteria. Colorectal and lung cancers were the most common diagnoses. The studies had methodological concerns regarding outcome measurement, selective reporting, and attrition. Five prehabilitation programs were compared to usual care (rehabilitation): combined training, aerobic training, respiratory muscle training plus aerobic training, respiratory muscle training plus resistance training, and pelvic floor training. The studies provided no clear evidence of an effect between groups. We assessed the overall certainty of the evidence as very low, downgraded due to serious study limitations and imprecision. CONCLUSION Prehabilitation programs focusing on exercise training may have an effect on adults with cancer, but the evidence is very uncertain. We have very little confidence in the results and the true effect is likely to be substantially different from these. Further research is needed before we can draw a more certain conclusion. Abstract
INTRODUCTION High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is an appropriate training modality to improve endurance and therefore contributes to physical performance. This review investigates the effect of HIIT on functional performance in cancer patients. We reviewed the relative peak oxygen uptake (relV̇O2PEAK) and meta-analytical compared HIIT with moderate intensity continuous training (MICT). Furthermore, we took various training parameters under consideration. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases. For the review, we included randomized controlled trials containing HIIT with cancer patients. From this, we filtered interventions with additional MICT for the meta-analysis. Outcomes of interest were various functional performance assessments and V̇O2MAX. RESULTS The research yielded 584 records which fit the inclusion criteria, of which 31 studies with n=1555 patients (57.4±8.6 years) could be included in the overall review and 8 studies in the meta-analysis (n=268, 59.11±5.11 years) regarding relV̇O2PEAK. Different functional outcomes were found, of which walking distance (+8.63±6.91% meters in 6-min walk test) and mobility (+2.7cm in sit and reach test) improved significantly due to HIIT. In terms of relV̇O2PEAK, the performance of cancer patients was improved by HIIT (10.68±6.48%) and MICT (7.4±4.29%). HIIT can be favored to increase relV̇O2PEAK (SMD 0.37; 95% CI 0.09-0.65; I2=0%; p=0.009). Effect sizes for relV̇O2PEAK improvements correlate moderately with total training volume (Spearman's ρ=0.49; p=0.03), whereas percentage increases do not (Spearman's ρ=0.24; p=0.14). CONCLUSION Functional and physical outcomes were positively altered by different HIIT protocols and forms of implementation, whereas a tendency toward more effectiveness of HIIT vs. MICT was found for relV̇O2PEAK. Future studies should include functional parameters more often, to finally allow a comparison between both training protocols in this regard.

Abstract
Against the background of a continuous improvement of established treatment outcomes and the compatibility of health economic considerations, pre- and perioperative processes are constantly being developed and further optimized. In recent years, the concept of prehabilitation has gained increasing importance as a proactive approach to preparing patients for mostly surgical cancer treatment and improving their physical and mental health. Prehabilitation in oncology is a systematic process aimed at improving the physical, psychosocial, and nutritional condition of patients before and during cancer treatment. The goal of prehabilitation is to enhance patients' ability to cope with the physiological stress of cancer treatment and improve their overall health and well-being. In addition, prehabilitation has the potential to reduce costs for the healthcare system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This narrative review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current prehabilitation and rehabilitation strategies for thyroid cancer survivors to optimize functional outcomes and enhance their quality of life. METHODS The review follows the SANRA quality criteria and includes an extensive literature search conducted in PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus. RESULTS The review emphasizes the role of a comprehensive rehabilitation approach in targeting the different domains that generate disability in thyroid cancer patients. In this context, physical activity, range of motion exercises, myofascial release, joint mobilization, and postural exercises are crucial for improving functional outcomes and reducing treatment-related discomfort and disability. Moreover, tailored rehabilitative management addressing dysphonia and dysphagia might have a positive impact on the quality of life of these patients. Despite these considerations, several barriers still affect the implementation of a multimodal rehabilitative approach in common clinical practice. Thus, sustainable and effective strategies like digital innovation and patient-centered approaches are strongly needed in order to implement the rehabilitative treatment framework of these subjects. CONCLUSIONS This narrative review provides valuable insights into the current prehabilitation and rehabilitation strategies to treat thyroid cancer survivors, addressing physical, psychological, and vocational needs to optimize functional outcomes and enhance their quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone metastases can cause severe pain, pathological fractures, and spinal cord paralysis, which interrupt treatment for tumors and cause patients to be bedridden. In this study, we aimed to clarify therapists' problems in the rehabilitation of patients with bone metastases and their countermeasures using the results of questionnaires to therapists and recommend safer and more rational rehabilitation. METHODS Questionnaire forms were sent to 21 therapists in our department. The questionnaire was conducted anonymously about problems during the rehabilitation procedure such as the risk of pathological fractures and paralysis. RESULTS All of the therapists had strong anxiety (43%) or some anxiety (57%) about the risk of pathological fractures or paralysis during a procedure. However, no therapist responded that this had ever occurred. Many of the respondents had changed a procedure to a milder one (81%) or interrupted a procedure (48%) due to the patient's condition on the day. Therapists chose many options to reduce the risk of pathological fractures and paralysis during the procedure. Among them, "pre-rehabilitation referral to orthopedic surgeon" (86%), "consultation with a doctor about changes in patient's symptoms and findings" (86%), and "regular cooperation between multiple occupations" (67%) were frequently selected. CONCLUSIONS Our questionnaire survey of therapists regarding the treatment of patients with bone metastases found that there was considerable anxiety about the risk of pathological fractures and paralysis during treatment. Our findings suggest that it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with multiple occupations, especially those in the orthopedic field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer is the third most common type of cancer in the UK. Treatment outcomes are poor and UK deaths from lung cancer are higher than any other cancer. Prehabilitation has shown to be an important means of preparing patients both physically and psychologically for cancer treatment. However, little is understood about the context and mechanisms of prehabilitation that can impact physiological and psychological wellbeing. Our aim was to review and summarise primary research on prehabilitation in the lung cancer pathway using a realist approach. METHODS A scoping review of empirical primary research was conducted. Five online medical databases from 2016 - February 2023 were searched. All articles reporting on prehabilitation in lung cancer were included in the review. For this review, prehabilitation was defined as either a uni-modal or multi-modal intervention including exercise, nutrition and/or psychosocial support within a home, community or hospital based setting. A realist framework of context, mechanism and outcome was used to assist with the interpretation of findings. RESULTS In total, 31 studies were included in the review, of which, three were published study protocols. Over 95% of studies featured an exercise component as part of a prehabilitation programme. Twenty-six of the studies had a surgical focus. Only two studies reported using theory to underpin the design of this complex intervention. There was large heterogeneity across all studies as well as a lack of clinical trials to provide definitive evidence on the programme design, setting, type of intervention, patient criteria, delivery, duration and outcome measures used. CONCLUSION A standardised prehabilitation programme for lung cancer patients does not yet exist. Future lung cancer prehabilitation programmes should take into account patient led values, needs, goals, support structures and beliefs, as these factors can affect the delivery and engagement of interventions. Future research should consider using a conceptual framework to conceptualise the living with and beyond cancer experience to help shape and inform personalised prehabilitation services.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION With a median age at diagnosis of 70, lung cancer represents an enormous public health problem among older Americans. An estimated 19,000 people age 65 and older undergo lung cancer surgery annually in the US. Older adults undergoing lung cancer surgery are often frail with limited physiologic reserves, multi-morbidities, and functional impairments. Physical function, dyspnea, and quality of life return to baseline slower in older adults compared with younger adults after lung surgery. AREAS COVERED In this review, we summarize available data about perioperative physical activity interventions that may improve outcomes for older adults undergoing lung cancer surgery. We also review the limitations of existing studies and discuss emerging data on the roles of telehealth and family caregiver inclusion in peri-operative physical activity interventions. EXPERT OPINION We propose that future perioperative physical activity interventions in older adults undergoing lung cancer surgery should include a comprehensive geriatric assessment to guide personalized interventions. Interventions should be conceptually based, with a focus on enhancing self-efficacy, motivation, and adherence through classic behavior change strategies that are proven to impact outcomes. Finally, interventions should be designed with attention to feasibility and scalability. Exercise programs delivered via telehealth (telephone or tele-video) may improve access and convenience for patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aging society imposes special challenges on operative medicine. OBJECTIVE Characteristics in the perioperative treatment of older patients. Consequences for the daily practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS Evaluation and summary of existing literature including recommendations for the (peri)operative management of older patients. RESULTS Despite the growing relevance there are only few studies focusing on older patients. The altered (patho)physiology and comorbidities are challenging and can lead to complications. CONCLUSION The evaluation of the indications for surgery should meticulously take the improvement to be expected into account by weighing up the individual wishes of patients and special risks. The adequate perioperative care including early mobilization and sufficient analgesia are decisive.

Abstract
Growing attention has been placed on cancer prehabilitation in the recent years as the number of publications increase. The real-world application of prehabilitation remains heterogeneous and its implementation has been challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pandemic has also provided impetus for change-leveraging technology and digitalization. This paper will discuss the pre-existing models of care, adaptations that had taken place in the pandemic, the model of care in the author's institution, and the future direction of cancer prehabilitation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Older breast cancer survivors have difficulty accessing rehabilitation interventions addressing activity limitations. Stakeholder input may improve accessibility of interventions. We sought expert consensus on intervention content and delivery features (e.g., where, mode, duration) to inform development of more accessible interventions for this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a modified Delphi process with patient, clinical, administrative, and research experts. In Round 1, experts evaluated content and delivery features according to domains of feasibility and prioritization. In Round 2, panelists were asked to re-rank or confer agreement of content and delivery features that met Round 1 consensus. Ranking was based on median score. Consensus was defined as a percentage of panelists that ranked an option within one unit of the median. For nominal data, consensus was defined as percent agreement. RESULTS Panelists (n = 20) prioritized physical activity strategies (Median Rank: 2; Consensus: 85%) and adaptive skills training (3; 65%). Panelists also prioritized delivery through outpatient services (1; 100%), post-treatment (1; 100%), combination mode of delivery (100%), duration of three months or less (100%) and occurring one to two days per week (100%). DISCUSSION Cancer rehabilitation interventions should be designed with input from stakeholders. The stakeholder intervention priorities identified in this study (e.g., content, setting, and mode) may improve relevance and accessibility of future cancer rehabilitation interventions. Interventions delivered in outpatient clinics and post-treatment using virtual and in-person visits may improve accessibility. Future research should examine the effectiveness and implementation of these intervention characteristics.

Abstract
Simple Summary For the growing number of cancer survivors worldwide, fatigue presents a major hurdle to function and quality of life. Treatment options for cancer-related fatigue are still emerging, and our current understanding of its etiology is limited. In this paper, we describe a new application of a comprehensive model for cancer-related fatigue: the predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating (3P) factors model. We propose that the 3P model may be leveraged—particularly using metabolomics, the microbiome, and inflammation in conjunction with behavioral science—to better understand the pathophysiology of cancer-related fatigue. Abstract A major gap impeding development of new treatments for cancer-related fatigue is an inadequate understanding of the complex biological, clinical, demographic, and lifestyle mechanisms underlying fatigue. In this paper, we describe a new application of a comprehensive model for cancer-related fatigue: the predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating (3P) factors model. This model framework outlined herein, which incorporates the emerging field of metabolomics, may help to frame a more in-depth analysis of the etiology of cancer-related fatigue as well as a broader and more personalized set of approaches to the clinical treatment of fatigue in oncology care. Included within this review paper is an in-depth description of the proposed biological mechanisms of cancer-related fatigue, as well as a presentation of the 3P model’s application to this phenomenon. We conclude that a clinical focus on organization risk stratification and treatment around the 3P model may be warranted, and future research may benefit from expanding the 3P model to understand fatigue not only in oncology, but also across a variety of chronic conditions.

Abstract
In recent years, multidisciplinary programs have been implemented that include different actions during the pre, intra and postoperative period, aimed at reducing perioperative stress and therefore improving the results of patients undergoing surgical interventions. Initially, these programs were developed for colorectal surgery and from there they have been extended to other surgeries. Thoracic surgery, considered highly complex, like other surgeries with a high postoperative morbidity and mortality rate, may be one of the specialties that most benefit from the implementation of these programs. This review presents the recommendations made by different specialties involved in the perioperative care of patients who require resection of a lung tumor. Meta-analyzes, systematic reviews, randomized and non-randomized controlled studies, and retrospective studies conducted in patients undergoing this type of intervention have been taken into account in preparing the recommendations presented in this guide. The GRADE scale has been used to classify the recommendations, assessing on the one hand the level of evidence published on each specific aspect and, on the other hand, the strength of the recommendation with which the authors propose its application. The recommendations considered most important for this type of surgery are those that refer to pre-habilitation, minimization of surgical aggression, excellence in the management of perioperative pain and postoperative care aimed at providing rapid postoperative rehabilitation.

Multimodal prehabilitation in older adults before major abdominal surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Langenbecks Arch Surg 2022; 407:2193-2204. Abstract
PURPOSE Multimodal prehabilitation aims to prepare frail older patients for major surgery. The objective of this review is to determine the benefits of pre-operative multimodal prehabilitation compared to standard care in older patients. METHODS Data sources included MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, CINAHL and PsychINFO. They were searched from inception to September 2021. Only randomized controlled trials (RCT) with an average study population age ≥ 65 that had undergone major abdominal operation with at least two components (physical, nutritional, psychological) of prehabilitation programs were included. RESULTS Nine RCTs were included with a total of 823 patients, of whom 705 completed the study with 358 undergoing prehabilitation and 347 were controls. Significantly lower complications were observed in the prehabilitation group compared to control (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.46 to 0.99; p = 0.04; I2 = 32%). A significant increase in 6-min walking distance (6MWD) from baseline to immediately prior to surgery (mean difference 35.1 m; 95%CI 11.6-58.4; p = 0.003; I2 = 67%) and 8 weeks post-surgery (mean difference 44.9 m; 95%CI 6.0-83.8; p = 0.02; I2 = 75%) was noted in the prehabilitation group. No difference was observed in length of stay (OR 0.59; 95% CI - 0.23 to 1.40; p = 0.16; I2 = 91%) or 30-day emergency department visit (OR 0.72; 95% CI 0.41 to 1.26; p = 0.25; I2 = 0%). Patient reported outcome measures were not significantly different. CONCLUSIONS Amongst older patients, multimodal prehabilitation increases peri-operative functional capacity and may potentially decrease post-operative complications. Future studies should continue to focus on older patients who are frail as this is the group that prehabilitation would likely have a clinically significant impact on.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to summarise research findings on dysphagia prehabilitation initiated before chemoradiation therapy (C)RT in head and neck cancer (HNC) including its impact on three swallow-related outcomes at distinct time points. METHODS A comprehensive search was completed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and CINAHL. Inclusion criteria were studies of adults with HNC with an exercise-based prehabilitation programme beginning before (C)RT. Methodological quality was rated using the Downs and Black checklist. The Template for Intervention Descriptions and Replication (TIDieR) checklist was used to evaluate how well studies were reported. RESULTS Eight studies (three randomised control trials) involving 295 adults with HNC were included. The largest participant group (63%) were Stage III/IV head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Prehabilitation was completed independently at home (100%) and typically began 2 weeks before CRT (75%). Studies evaluated the impact of dysphagia prehabilitation across functional (n = 6), quality of life (n = 5) and physiological (n = 4) domains. Prehabilitation significantly altered physiological (25%), functional (66%) and quality of life (50%) outcomes. Fifty per cent of studies included long-term (>1 year) outcomes. Quality of included studies ranged from poor (25%) to good (38%). Six (75%) studies reported sufficient details of exercise programmes. CONCLUSION Limited evidence supports exercise-based dysphagia prehabilitation before (C)RT to improve swallow-related outcomes, and long-term benefits remain unclear. Further high-quality research using core outcome sets is required.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the exercise intervention focused on high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in lung cancer survivors. DESIGN We performed a literature search using PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct (last search March 2021). Quality assessment and risk of bias were assessed using the Downs and Black scale and the Cochrane tool. PARTICIPANTS A total of 305 patients of 8 studies were assessed, with their mean age ranging from 61 ± 6.3 to 66 ± 10 years in the exercise group and from 58.5 ± 8.2 to 68 ± 9 years in the control group. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and pilot randomized controlled trials was performed. We included controlled trials testing the effect of HIIT in lung cancer survivors versus the usual care provided to these patients. The data were pooled and a meta-analysis was completed for cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2peak). RESULTS We selected 8 studies, which included 305 patients with lung cancer: 6 studies were performed around surgical moment, one study during radiotherapy's treatment, and other during target therapy. After pooling the data, exercise capacity was included in the analysis. Results showed significant differences in favour to HIIT when compared to usual care in cardiorespiratory fitness (standard mean difference = 2.62; 95% confidence interval = 1.55, 3.68; p < 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The findings indicated a beneficial effect of HIIT for improving cardiorespiratory fitness in lung cancer patients in early stages around oncological treatment moment. Nevertheless, this review has several limitations, the total number of studies was low, and the stage and subtype of lung cancer patients were heterogeneous that means that the conclusions of this review should be taken with caution. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Investigating supportive care (SC) needs and utilization/willingness to use SC services from diagnosis to one year after radical cystectomy in bladder cancer (BC) patients. MATERIALS & METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted in 90 BC patients at Ghent/Leuven University Hospitals between April 2017 and December 2020. The Supportive Care Needs Survey-short form (SCNS-SF34) was used before radical cystectomy, one, three, six and 12 months after radical cystectomy. Additional questions assessed utilization/willingness to use SC services. Linear mixed models were performed. RESULTS The majority of BC patients report at least one moderate or high SC need at diagnosis (82%), month 1 (84%), month 3 (86%), month 6 (64%), and month 12 (60%). Significant decreases over time were seen for all domains (p < 0.001), except for sexuality (p = 0.275). From baseline to month 1, physical needs first significantly increased (p = 0.001) after which they decreased. Psychological (e.g. fears about the future) and informational (e.g. information on how to get better) needs were most common at baseline whereas physical (e.g. lack of energy) and informational needs were more common in the early postoperative phases. The majority of patients (ranging from 81% (month 1) to 91% (month 12)) did not make use of SC services and the majority of the patients (ranging from 81% (month 1) to 88% (month 12)) did not wish to talk about their problems to someone. Those willing to talk to someone preferred their physician. CONCLUSIONS A clear gap exists between the large proportion of SC needs experienced by BC patients undergoing radical cystectomy and the low use of SC services.

Abstract
In recent years, multidisciplinary programs have been implemented that include different actions during the pre, intra and postoperative period, aimed at reducing perioperative stress and therefore improving the results of patients undergoing surgical interventions. Initially, these programs were developed for colorectal surgery and from there they have been extended to other surgeries. Thoracic surgery, considered highly complex, like other surgeries with a high postoperative morbidity and mortality rate, may be one of the specialties that most benefit from the implementation of these programs. This review presents the recommendations made by different specialties involved in the perioperative care of patients who require resection of a lung tumor. Meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized and non-randomized controlled studies, and retrospective studies conducted in patients undergoing this type of intervention have been taken into account in preparing the recommendations presented in this guide. The GRADE scale has been used to classify the recommendations, assessing on the one hand the level of evidence published on each specific aspect and, on the other hand, the strength of the recommendation with which the authors propose its application. The recommendations considered most important for this type of surgery are those that refer to pre-habilitation, minimization of surgical aggression, excellence in the management of perioperative pain and postoperative care aimed at providing rapid postoperative rehabilitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM To evaluate quality of life (QoL) in women treated for ovarian tumors one year after laparotomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS The validated quality of life questionnaires (EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-OV28) were sent to women who had undergone laparotomy due to ovarian tumors 12 months after surgery. The answers were analyzed and grouped according to the ovarian tumor histology (benign, borderline and cancer). RESULTS A total of 621 patients (87.5% out of 710) agreed to participate in the study. Ovarian cancer patients experienced statistically worse QoL one year after laparotomy in several analyzed parameters, including financial difficulties, compared to patients treated for benign and borderline tumors. CONCLUSION Women with ovarian cancer still need further cancer rehabilitation and support one year after diagnosis to improve their QoL. The novel finding was that ovarian cancer patients suffered from financial difficulties even in a free of charge health care system.

Abstract
Exercise prehabilitation prior to major surgery targets a reduction in postoperative complications through improved conditioning and respiratory function. However its effectiveness in cancer surgery is unclear. The objective of this review was to determine if preoperative high-intensity interval training (HIIT) improves preoperative fitness in patients scheduled for oncologic resection, and whether postoperative complications are impacted. METHODS: CINAHL, AMED, PEDro, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library and PubMed/MEDLINE were searched until April 2021 using predefined search strategy and accompanied by manual forward and backwards citation review. Screening of titles, abstracts, full-texts, data extraction, risk of bias assessment and methodologic quality was performed independently by two reviewers. Mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was compared and heterogeneity assessed using Chi Squared Test and I2 statistic. Six randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the systematic review. Interventions prescribed bouts of high-intensity exercise [80-115% peak work rate (WRp)] interspaced with low-intensity (rest-50% WRp) exercise. The meta-analysis included five RCTs reporting peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). Preoperative HIIT did not result in significantly higher VO2peak in comparison to usual care or moderate intensity exercise (MD 0.83, 95%CI-0.51-2.17) kg/ml/min, p = 0.12). Studies were insufficiently powered with respect to postoperative complications, but there is no evidence of significant impact. No adverse events occurred and high adherence rates were reported. Results of this systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate there is insufficient evidence to support HIIT as a method of improving preoperative fitness prior to oncologic resection. Further work is needed to determine if specific HIIT parameters can be adapted to improve efficacy over short time-frames.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand perspectives on and acceptability of prehabilitation among patients undergoing complex abdominal cancer surgery (cytoreductive surgery with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy). METHODS Seventy-nine patients admitted to a Danish colorectal or ovarian cancer centre participated in qualitative semi-structured interviews and/or registered their prehabilitation activities based on preoperative recommendations presented in a leaflet. Malterud's principles of systematic text condensation were used to analyse the interview data, and descriptive statistics were used to describe the activity registrations. RESULTS Five domains clarify central aspects of the patients' perspectives on and acceptability of prehabilitation: the preoperative period, attitudes towards prehabilitation, the actual prehabilitation performed, motivation to take action and the need for support. CONCLUSION Patients undergoing major abdominal cancer surgery are interested in and positive towards prehabilitation, but it has to be on their terms. The patients need support and supervision, but it has to be provided in a setting and in a way that are in line with the patient's preferences, resources and values. Thus, patient involvement is necessary to create prehabilitation programmes that are feasible and fit into patients' everyday lives.

Abstract
Objectives: This study longitudinally examined how older adult cancer survivors perceive disability in activities of daily living over time compared to older adults who have not had cancer. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of the National Health and Aging Trends Study examining participants with a new cancer diagnosis and age-, gender-, and comorbidity-matched comparison participants without a history of cancer. Generalized linear mixed models examined time and group interaction and main effects in disability. Results: There was a significant main effect of time (F4,771 = 12.81; p < .0001) demonstrating increasing disability levels for both groups. There were significant group differences, with higher disability in the cancer group than the comparison group (β = 0.628, SE = 0.263; t = 2.39, p = 0.017). Discussion: Although perceived disability was greater immediately following cancer diagnosis, older adult cancer survivors and comparison participants appear to have similar perceived disability over time.

Abstract
Loss of skeletal muscle and inferior muscle quality are associated with poor prognosis in patients undergoing preoperative treatment for pancreatic cancer, so maintaining skeletal muscle health before surgery may help accelerate patients' functional recovery and improve their quality of life following surgery. While exercise helps maintain or increase skeletal muscle in individuals undergoing cancer treatment, its efficacy during pancreatic cancer treatment is unclear. Accordingly, in this study we compared changes in skeletal muscle quantity (skeletal muscle index [SMI]) and quality (skeletal muscle density [SMD]) during preoperative pancreatic cancer treatment in participants in a home-based exercise program (EP) and a historical cohort of patients who received the usual care (UC) with no formal exercise programming. Recommendations for the EP cohort included both aerobic and resistance exercise. We assessed changes in SMI and SMD using computed tomography scans administered at treatment planning (T0, prior to EP enrollment) and preoperative restaging (T1) for 33 EP and 64 UC patients and compared changes between groups. The UC patients had statistically significant SMI decreases from T0 to T1 (-1.4 ± 3.8 cm2/m2; p = .005), while the EP patients did not (0.2 ± 3.2 cm2/m2; p = .7). The SMI loss was significantly worse for the UC than for the EP patients (p = .03). Neither group demonstrated statistically significant changes in SMD from T0 to T1, nor did the groups differ in the amount of change in SMD. An adjusted linear regression model demonstrated that EP participation was significantly associated with better SMI maintenance (p = .02). These results suggest that participation in a home-based EP during preoperative treatment may help improve skeletal muscle health and clinical and quality of life outcomes for pancreatic cancer survivors.

Abstract
Background Primary central nervous system (CNS) tumors are often associated with high symptom burden and a poor prognosis from the time of diagnosis. The purpose of this study is to describe patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data from long-term survivors (LTS; ≥5-year survival post-diagnosis). Methods Clinical/treatment/molecular characteristics and PROs (symptom burden/interference (MDASI-BT/SP), perceived cognition (Neuro-QoL), anxiety/depression (PROMIS), and general health status (EQ-5D-3L)) were collected on 248 adult LTS between 9/2016 and 8/2019. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used to report results. Results Participants had a median age of 47 years (19-82) and were primarily White (83%) males (51%) with high-grade tumors (59%) and few mutations. Forty-two percent of the 222 brain tumor LTS reported no moderate-to-severe symptoms, whereas 45% reported three or more; most common symptoms were fatigue (40%), difficulty remembering (29%), and drowsiness (28%). Among spine tumor LTS (n = 42), nearly half reported moderate-to-severe weakness, pain, fatigue, and numbness/tingling, with 72% experiencing activity-related interference. Severe anxiety, depression, and cognitive symptoms were reported in up to 23% of the sample. Brain tumor LTS at higher risk for severe symptoms were more likely to be young, unemployed, and have poor KPS (Karnofsky Performance Status), whereas high symptom-risk spinal cord tumor LTS had poor KPS and received any tumor treatment. Conclusions Findings indicate LTS fall into distinct cohorts with no significant symptoms or very high symptom burden, regardless of tumor grade or mutational profile. These LTS data demonstrate the need for survivorship care programs and future studies to explore the symptom trajectory of all CNS tumor patients for prevention and early interventions.

Abstract
[Purpose] This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-operative physical
rehabilitation on the postoperative course of the patients with gastrointestinal cancer
undergoing surgery. [Participants and Methods] A rehabilitation physician examined and
educated 33 patients (42% of whom were male with a mean age of 65.2 ± 10.9 years) who were
scheduled to undergo elective surgery for gastrointestinal cancer. They received
instructions for performing exercise from a physical therapist 17.0 ± 7.3 days prior to
surgery. We divided the participants into three groups (improvement, maintenance, and
deterioration) based on the changes in their ability to walk prior to surgery. This study
compared the results of the 6-min walk test, hospital anxiety and depression scale, and
36-Item Short-Form Health Survey version 2 for the three groups at baseline, following
rehabilitation prior to surgery, and 4 weeks following surgery. [Results] In the
improvement group, the decrease in the ability to walk between the baseline and 4 weeks
after surgery was not significant. Conversely, the deterioration group exhibited a
significant decrease in the ability to walk 4 weeks after surgery. [Conclusion]
Improvement in walking ability by rehabilitation training prior to surgery leads to the
preservation of physical function in the patients with gastrointestinal cancer undergoing
surgery.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Access to perioperative breast surgery occupational therapy services remains limited in remote areas. OBJECTIVE To assess the feasibility and acceptance of occupational therapy services using a "hub-and-spoke" telemedicine model. DESIGN Prospective study using videoconferencing to connect the occupational therapist, located at the hub site, with the patient, located at the spoke site. SETTING National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center (hub site) and affiliated community cancer center (spoke site). The sites are 75 mi apart. PARTICIPANTS Female breast cancer patients (N = 26) scheduled for breast surgery were asked to participate in telemedicine occupation therapy sessions. Patients lived in a geographically remote region and travelled a mean of 16 miles (range = 3-85) to the hub site. The majority (56%) of the patients had public insurance. INTERVENTION Perioperative occupational therapy sessions completed through videoconferencing. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Outcome measures were participation in and completion rate for the sessions, number of sessions required to return to baseline, and time interval from surgery to return to baseline function. Patient satisfaction was assessed with a questionnaire. RESULTS Of the patients who enrolled in the study, 18 completed all postoperative sessions in which functional assessments, exercises, and education were provided. Patients regained baseline function within a mean of 42.4 days after surgery and after an average of three sessions. Patients reported high satisfaction with the sessions. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Videoconference telemedicine in breast perioperative rehabilitation is feasible, effective, and acceptable to patients. This study adds to the emerging use of telemedicine for rehabilitative services. WHAT THIS ARTICLE ADDS This study, by demonstrating the acceptability, practicality, and efficacy of breast perioperative occupational therapy services offered through a videoconferencing platform, supports continued research to evaluate the value of telemedicine. Issues with access to medical care may be mitigated through creative use of technology.

Abstract
Introduction Despite improvements in perioperative care, major abdominal surgery continues to be associated with significant perioperative morbidity. Accurate preoperative risk stratification and optimisation (prehabilitation) are necessary to reduce perioperative morbidity. This study evaluated the screening and assessment of modifiable risk factors amendable for prehabilitation interventions and measured the patient compliance rate with recommended interventions. Method Between May 2019 and January 2020, patients referred to our hospital for HPB surgery were screened and assessed on six modifiable preoperative risk factors. The risk factors and screening tools used, with cutoff values, included (i) low physical fitness (a 6-min walk test < 82% of patient’s calculated norm and/or patient’s activity level not meeting the global recommendations on physical activity for health). Patients who were unfit based on the screening were assessed with a cardiopulmonary exercise test (anaerobic threshold ≤ 11 mL/kg/min); (ii) malnutrition (patient-generated subjective global assessment ≥ 4); (iii) iron-deficiency anaemia (haemoglobin < 12 g/dL for women, < 13 g/dL for men and transferrin saturation ≤ 20%); (iv) frailty (Groningen frailty indicator/Robinson frailty score ≥ 4); (v) substance use (smoking and alcohol use of > 5 units per week) and (vi) low psychological resilience (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale ≥ 8). Patients had a consultation with the surgeon on the same day as their screening. High-risk patients were referred for necessary interventions. Results One hundred consecutive patients were screened at our prehabilitation outpatient clinic. The prevalence of high-risk patients per risk factor was 64% for low physical fitness, 42% for malnutrition, 32% for anaemia (in 47% due to iron deficiency), 22% for frailty, 12% for smoking, 18% for alcohol use and 21% for low psychological resilience. Of the 77 patients who were eventually scheduled for surgery, 53 (68.8%) needed at least one intervention, of whom 28 (52.8%) complied with 100% of the necessary interventions. The median (IQR) number of interventions needed in the 77 patients was 1.0 (0–2). Conclusion It is feasible to screen and assess all patients referred for HPB cancer surgery for six modifiable risk factors. Most of the patients had at least one risk factor that could be optimised. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking are preventable risk factors in surgery. It is unknown whether intervening on these two risk factors also have an effect on other lifestyles. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to compare the effect of an intensive alcohol and smoking cessation intervention on other lifestyles (malnutrition, obesity, and physical inactivity) with treatment as usual, among patients scheduled for radical cystectomy. The secondary aim was to evaluate associations between successful quitting and changes in other lifestyles. DATA SOURCES Data on 94 patients with bladder cancer undergoing radical cystectomy originated from the STOP-OP study, a randomized intervention trial that enrolled patients from four Danish hospitals. Patients were enrolled between November 2014 and July 2017. CONCLUSION We found no significant differences regarding the three lifestyle factors; risk of malnutrition, obesity, and physical inactivity between patients in the intervention and standard care at the end of the intervention at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months. Also, there were no significant associations between successful quitters and non-quitters for alcohol and smoking and the other three lifestyles; risk of malnutrition, obesity, and physical inactivity. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Findings from this study show that cancer surgery is a good opportunity to address lifestyle changes and that more research into the effect of multimodal interventions are needed. Guidelines on how to support patients to change lifestyle in relation to surgery should be part of nursing practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional impairments (measured by activities of daily living [ADLs]) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) may complicate outcomes in older adults diagnosed with cancer. In this retrospective cohort analysis, we characterized ADLs and HRQOL in adults older than 65 y with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancers and evaluated for an association to cancer-specific survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with UGI cancers aged 65 y or older were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results and the Medicare Health Outcomes Survey-linked database. Demographics, comorbidities, stage, ADLs, and HRQOL were summarized by patients managed with and without surgery. Because of the wide variety of cancers, we subdivided patients into cohorts of esophagogastric [EG; n = 88] or hepatobiliary/pancreatic [n = 68]. Cancer-specific survival curves were modeled for changes in ADL and HRQOL scores after diagnosis. Risk factors for cancer-specific survival were assessed with hazard ratios (HRs) and adjusted for demographics, stage, comorbidities, and disease cohorts. RESULTS HRQOL scores declined after diagnosis, with a sharper decline in nonsurgery patients. On multivariate analysis, inability to perform specific ADLs was associated with worse survival in multiple cohorts: hepatobiliary/pancreatic nonsurgery patients unable to eat (HR 3.3 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7-6.5); all patients with EG unable to use the toilet (HR 3.3 95% CI 1.5-7.9); EG nonsurgery cohort unable to dress or use the toilet (dress HR 14.1 95% CI 4.0-49.0; toilet HR 4.7 95% CI 1.8-12.3). CONCLUSIONS Older survivors with UGI cancers report declines in HRQOL, especially those not undergoing surgery. The ability to perform ADLs may be linked to survival in this population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Uptake of sufficient physical activity before and after radical cystectomy is important to improve physical and psychosocial outcomes in bladder cancer (BC) patients. METHODS In this paper, we describe the development of an evidence-based and theory-informed intervention, guided by the steps of the Intervention Mapping approach, to promote physical activity before and after radical cystectomy in patients with BC. RESULTS The intervention is a home-based physical activity program. The preoperative timeframe of the intervention is 4 or 12 weeks, depending on administration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Postoperatively, the intervention will last for 12 weeks. The intervention consists of a digital oncological platform (DOP), several consultations with healthcare professionals, personal booklet and follow-up phone calls. DOP includes information, diaries, visual representation of progress, mailbox, videos of peers and treating physician explaining the benefits of physical activity, photo material of exercises and a walking program with an activity tracker. Individual goals will be set and will be self-monitored by the patient through DOP. Patients will receive alerts and regular feedback. CONCLUSIONS Intervention Mapping ensures transparency of all intervention components and offers a useful approach for the development of behaviour change interventions for cancer patients and for translation of theories into practice.

Abstract
Background: Head and neck (H&N) cancers account for 4% of total cancers diagnosed. However, quality of life (QoL) implications are more severe for this patient population due to the complexity, extent, and deformities resulting from treatment interventions. Principally debilitating complications include diminished functional walking capacity, reduced cervical range of motion (ROM), and scapular strength. An extensive literature search revealed a paucity of evidence utilizing physical therapy assessment and intervention for this population. The purpose of this study was to describe the development and clinical feasibility of a prehabilitation program aimed to thwart these complications for patients diagnosed with H&N cancer. Methods: Inclusion criteria: male or female, 18+ years, speak and read the English language, ambulate independently, diagnosed with H&N cancer, and scheduled for surgical intervention. Institutional Review Board approval was obtained. Pre- and post-surgical measurements included the six-minute walk test (6MWT), cervical ROM, manual muscle testing for scapular strength, and three questionnaires: physical activity history, health behaviors questionnaire, and the Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy H&N QoL survey. Results: Three participants were enrolled (two males and one female) all identifying as Caucasian and between 60-90 years of age. Pre- to post-cervical ROM demonstrated decline in extension/bilateral rotation for two of three participants. Two participants demonstrated decreased 6MWT distance while one increased. No participants experienced any adverse effects of the prehabilitation program. Conclusion: This is the first study protocol to describe a physical therapist-administered H&N cancer prehabilitation program. Professionally administered education and exercise has potential to prevent, manage, and mitigate the adverse effects of cancer treatment. Additional research is needed to define the importance of prehabilitation relative to improved clinical outcomes and improved QoL. Patients with a cancer diagnosis are susceptible to impairments and functional limitations as a result of treatments and this prehabilitation program demonstrates potential to positively impact outcomes across the survivorship continuum. Due to their education and integration within the medical system, physical therapists are well-positioned to lead the effort to unify theory and clearly define parameters for oncology prehabilitation.

Abstract
Nutrition and gastrointestinal cancer are inextricably linked. The metabolic effects of cancer along with changes in dietary intake, the development of cancer cachexia and the presence of sarcopenia can influence changes in body composition. These have a negative impact on quality of life and tolerance to cancer treatment. Treatment for cancer presents some significant nutritional challenges as nutrition impact symptoms may develop, be exacerbated by treatment and may contribute to a worsening in nutritional status. Nutrition screening and assessment should be an integral part of holistic patient care. The provision of appropriate, evidence-based dietary advice should occur before, during and after cancer treatment. Appropriate and timely methods of nutritional support across the spectrum of gastrointestinal cancer are needed to ensure that people are adequately supported during courses of treatment that can span weeks and months. These can range from standard approaches of supplementing oral intake to complex interventions such as managing high output intestinal stomas. The gastrointestinal tract is particularly susceptible to impact from systemic anti-cancer treatments and radiotherapy. Gastrointestinal late effects of cancer treatment are now recognised to present particular challenges in terms of both medical and nutritional management. These late effects have a significant impact on the individual and their quality of life in addition to implications for the health service. Dietary intake following cancer treatment has an impact on quality of life and future research may demonstrate its influence on the risk of recurrence of gastrointestinal cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the magnitude of work-related disability in postmenopausal women with breast cancer compared with healthy controls. It also examined demographic and clinical correlates of work-related disability in postmenopausal women with breast cancer. STUDY DESIGN This was an exploratory secondary analysis of longitudinal study. OUTCOME MEASURE The Work Limitations Questionnaire measured the percentage of at-work productivity loss. RESULTS The analysis revealed a significant group-by-time interaction effect (F1,40 = 4.705, P = 0.036, partial η = .105) on work-related disability. Participants with breast cancer (mean = 2.364, SE = 0.374) had significantly higher percentage of at-work productivity loss compared with the healthy control group (mean = 1.263, SE = 0.392). At baseline, cognitive-emotional symptoms were moderately to strongly associated with work-related disability. At 6 months, physical symptoms were moderately associated with work-related disability. CONCLUSIONS Women with newly diagnosed breast cancer are likely to experience higher rates of work-related disability compared with health counterparts. Health care providers should provide intervention to parallel the shift in symptoms that lead to higher work-related disability and job cessation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Around twenty million new cases and ten million of deaths were attributed to cancer in 2018. Physical exercise, as main component of prehabilitation programs, has been associated with clinical improvements in aerobic capacity, muscular strength, gait speed, and fewer postoperative complications. This systematic review aims to determine the benefits and harms of prehabilitation programs, mainly composed of physical exercise, compared with standard care for cancer patients. METHODS/DESIGN A librarian will systematically search for randomized controlled trials in the following databases: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE (PubMed), and EMBASE. Two independent reviewers will independently screen the retrieved references, appraise the methodological quality of the included studies, and extract data. If possible, we will pool the data. We will evaluate the completeness of reporting of prehabilitation programs by using the CERT checklist, and the GRADE approach will be used to evaluate the quality of the evidence. DISCUSSION This systematic review will determine the benefits and harms of prehabilitation programs for cancer patients. We will provide a complete appraisal of the quality of the evidence, our confidence in the results, and completeness of reporting of the exercise interventions evaluated in the prehabilitation programs. Findings from this review will assist health care providers, patients, decision-makers, and international organizations to make informed decisions in this field. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To recognize cancer prehabilitation as a pretreatment regimen to increase functional status for patients requiring cancer treatment. This article presents current evidence addressing the efficacy and benefits of prehabilitation regimens in different cancer survivor populations. DATA SOURCES Studies and case reports in the PubMed database. CONCLUSION Cancer prehabilitation may improve outcomes. Prehabilitation may include targeted or whole-body exercise, nutrition, education, psychologic counseling, and smoking cessation. Opportunities exist to further improve access to and delivery of multimodal prehabilitation, and nurses play a critical role in connecting patients to these services. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Oncology nurses who are knowledgeable of cancer treatment-related effects are poised to assess survivors for existing impairments, advocate for prehabilitation for existing and potential morbidities, and monitor functional status over time. As patient educators, they are key to informing cancer survivors about the role of prehabilitation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the key components necessary for successful application of rehabilitation principles to oncology survivors. DATA SOURCES Validated databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, and Scopus. CONCLUSION Rehabilitation is an essential component of cancer care that addresses functional needs for oncology survivors and is best accomplished via an interdisciplinary team. Interdisciplinary care, provided by nursing, physiatry, rehabilitation therapy, and exercise physiology, are critical components for comprehensive intervention. Challenges exist in implementing services, but opportunity also exists within the post-acute care sector. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Nurses play an important role in the screening, assessment, and treatment of cancer-related functional impairments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children undergoing leukemia treatment report co-occurring symptoms of fatigue, sleep disturbances, pain, nausea, and depression as a symptom cluster. Physical activity (PA) is essential for development and may influence symptom severity. Children with leukemia are at risk of cognitive impairments from central nervous system therapies. Using a longitudinal parallel-process model, relationships among function and symptom clusters were explored. OBJECTIVE This study examined the longitudinal mediation effects of PA on cognition via a symptom cluster during leukemia treatment. METHODS Symptoms, PA, and cognitive function of 327 children aged 3 to 18 years were measured over 4 intervals during the first year of leukemia treatment. Children 7 years or older self-reported and parents reported for younger children. Parents completed cognitive function measurements for all children. The influence of the first time point and the subsequent change between all 4 time points of PA on the symptom cluster were explored. Analysis determined whether the symptom cluster mediated the effect of cognition over the treatment period. RESULTS Patients with a higher PA at time 1 reduced their symptom cluster severity over the measurements. However, when PA increased over the measurements, symptom cluster severity also increased. When the symptom cluster was more severe at time 1, cognitive function was lower at time 1, and cognitive function decreased over time. When symptoms became more severe over time, cognitive function declined. CONCLUSIONS The symptom cluster acted as a mediator between PA and cognition. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Symptom management during treatment may be an additional strategy for protecting cognitive function.
