Abstract
Butia capitata endocarp (BCE) is a biomass residue with the potential to produce a wide variety of bio-products. The processing of BCE in a sequential process of subcritical water hydrolysis (SWH) and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) was investigated to obtain fermentable sugars, platform chemicals, bio-oil, and biochar. The SWH was evaluated at 230 and 260 °C and solvent: feed mass ratios (R) of 10 and 20 for the production of fermentable sugars and platform chemicals. The solid residue from SWH was sequentially submitted to the HTL at 330 and 360 °C for bio-oil and biochar production. The results were analyzed by comparing the sequential (SWH/HTL) and individual (HTL only) processes. The highest yields of fermentable sugars (5.26 g/ 100 g BCE) were obtained for SWH at 260 °C and R-20 with higher contents of xylose (2.64 g/100 g BCE) and cellobiose (1.75 g/100 g BCE). The highest yields of platform chemicals (2.44 g/100 g BCE) were obtained for SWH at 260 °C and R-10 with higher contents of acetic acid (1.78 g/100 g BCE) and furfural (0.54 g/100 g BCE). The highest yield of bio-oil (25.30 g/100 g BCE) occurred in HTL individual process at 360 °C and R-20. Sequential process SWH/HTL showed a decrease in bio-oil yield but maintained a similar biochar yield compared to HTL, in addition to the production of fermentable sugars and platform chemicals.

Recovery of Anthocyanins from Hibiscus sabdariffa L. Using a Combination of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction and Subcritical Water Extraction. Processes (Basel) 2023. Abstract
Anthocyanins are one of the bioactive compounds in roselle that has many medicinal proposes. Anthocyanins are placed in the inner part of the roselle; therefore, combinations of two methods were applied to extract the anthocyanins. The first stage is employing supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) to break the particle surface or outer layer of the roselle based on the total phenolic compounds (TPC) recovery, and the second step was to apply subcritical water extraction (SWE) for the extraction of anthocyanins. The objective is to determine the best conditions to obtain high yields of total anthocyanins compounds (TAC) from the roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) by employing a combination of ScCO2 and SWE. The optimal conditions of ScCO2 (first stage) were 19.13 MPa, 60 °C, and 4.31 mL/min, yielding 18.20%, and 80.34 mg/100 g TPC, respectively. The optimum conditions of SWE (second stage) were 9.48 MPa, 137 °C, and 6.14 mL/min, yielding 86.11% and 1224.61 mg/100 g TAC, respectively. The application of integrated ScCO2 and SWE proved successful in achieving high anthocyanins production and yield as compared to previous extraction methods. This approach may be used to extract the roselle with a greater anthocyanin’s concentration than the prior method.

Abstract
The production of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from Jiuzao was studied using a two-stage process based on autohydrolysis pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis. Jiuzao was autohydrolyzed under conditions where temperature, time, particle size, and solid-liquid ratio were varied experimentally. Optimal XOS production was obtained from Jiuzao with a >20 mesh particle size treated at 181.5 °C for 20 min with a 1:13.6 solid-liquid ratio. Subsequently, optimal enzymatic hydrolysis conditions for xylanase XynAR were identified as 60 °C, pH 5, and xylanase XynAR loading of 15 U/mL. Using these conditions, a yield of 34.2% XOS was obtained from Jiuzao within 2 h. The process developed in the present study could enable effective and ecofriendly industrial production of XOS from Jiuzao.

Abstract
A significant amount of bioactive compound-rich solid waste is released during the industrial phycocolloid-centric extraction of Gelidium sesquipedale. The impact of mild pressurized hot water extraction on repurposing this waste for the recovery of agar with an adjustable gel texture is investigated. A two-factor interaction response surface model assessed the influences of the operating temperatures (80 to 130 °C), times (45 and 150 min), pressures (1 to 70 bar), and algae concentrations (3 to 10% (w:v)). At a temperature of 100 °C, a pressure of 10.13 bar, a recovery time of 45 min, and a 10% algae concentration, the working parameters were considered ideal (w:v). Agar with a hardness of 431.6 g, an adhesiveness of −13.14 g.s−1, a springiness of 0.94, a cohesiveness of 0.63, and a gumminess of 274.46 g was produced under these conditions. A combined desirability of 0.78 was obtained for the exposed technology that retrieved gels with a minimum agar yield of 10% and thermal hysteresis between 39 ± 1 and 52 ± 0.5 °C. The fitted design can provide a high techno-commercial value to the agri-food industrial waste stream.

Abstract
This study evaluated the subcritical water hydrolysis (SWH) of brewer's spent grains (BSG) to obtain sugars and amino acids. The experimental conditions investigated the hydrolysis of BSG in a single flow-through reactor and in two sequential reactors operated in semi-continuous mode. The hydrolysis experiments were carried out for 120 min at 15 MPa, 5 mL water min-1, at different temperatures (80 - 180 °C) and using an S/F of 20 and 10 g solvent g-1 BSG, for the single and two sequential reactors, respectively. The highest monosaccharide yields were obtained at 180 °C in a single reactor (47.76 mg g-1 carbohydrates). With these operational conditions, the hydrolysate presented xylose (0.477 mg mL-1) and arabinose (1.039 mg mL-1) as main sugars, while low contents of furfural (310.7 µg mL-1), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (<1 mg L-1), and organic acids (0.343 mg mL-1) were obtained. The yield of proteins at 180 °C in a process with a single reactor was 43.62 mg amino acids g-1 proteins, where tryptophan (215.55 µg mL-1), aspartic acid (123.35 µg mL-1), valine (64.35 µg mL-1), lysine (16.55 µg mL-1), and glycine (16.1 µg mL-1) were the main amino acids recovered in the hydrolysate. In conclusion, SWH pretreatment is a promising technology to recover bio-based compounds from BSG; however, further studies are still needed to increase the yield of bioproducts from lignocellulosic biomass to explore two sequential reactors.

Abstract
Deffated rice bran has potential to processing into ethanol due to its lignocellulosic composition and agricultural productivity. The composition of the pretreated deffated rice bran with Deep Eutectic Solvent was investigated aiming the production of sugars and bioproducts using subcritical water hydrolysis. Changes in the deffated rice bran composition at different pretreatment times and mixtures of deep eutectic solvent were evaluated by the derivative of thermogravimetric analysis. The pretreated deffated rice bran presented an enrichment in the content of hemicelluloses (281.0%) and delignification (59.3 %). Under the same condition of subcritical water hydrolysis (230 °C/R-100) the yield of fermentable sugars increased 2.20 times in the same study time interval (20 min) when comparing pretreated and untreated deffated rice bran.

Abstract
Simple Summary Supplementation of agriculture by-product as functional feed additives in combination with biofloc technology (a sustainable and environmentally friendly technology) has recently gained much attention in aquaculture. In the present study, sugarcane bagasse powder can possibly be applied as a feed additive to improve growth performance, immune response, and immune and antioxidant-related gene expression. Abstract We investigated, herein, the effects of dietary inclusion of sugarcane bagasse powder (SB) on Nile tilapia development, mucosal and serum immunities, and relative immune and antioxidant genes. Fish (15.12 ± 0.04 g) were provided a basal diet (SB0) or basal diet incorporated with SB at 10 (SB10), 20 (SB20), 40 (SB40), or 80 (SB80) g kg−1 for 8 weeks. Our results demonstrated that the dietary incorporation of sugarcane bagasse powder (SB) at 20 and 40 g kg−1 significantly ameliorated FW, WG, and SGR as opposed to fish fed basal, SB10, and SB80 diets. However, no significant changes in FCR and survivability were observed between the SB supplemented diets and the control (basal diet). The mucosal immunity exhibited significantly higher SMLA and SMPA activities (p < 0.005) in fish treated with SB diets after eight weeks. The highest SMLA and SMPA levels were recorded in fish fed SB80 followed by SB20, SB40, and SB10, respectively. For serum immunity, fish fed SB incorporated diets significantly ameliorated SL and RB levels (p < 0.05) compared with the control. However, SP was not affected by the inclusion of SB in any diet throughout the experiment. The expression of IL1, IL8, LBP, GSTa, GPX, and GSR genes in the fish liver was significantly increased in fish fed the SB20 and SB10 diets relative to the basal diet fed fish (p < 0.05); whereas only the IL8, LBP, and GPX genes in the intestines were substantially augmented via the SB20 and SB80 diets (p < 0.05). IL1 and GSR were not influenced by the SB incorporated diets (p > 0.05). In summary, sugarcane bagasse powder (SB) may be applied as a feed additive to improve growth performance, immune response, and immune and antioxidant-related gene expression in Nile tilapia.

Abstract
Microbial biomass and waste materials conversion for biochemicals production has been an alternative for energy conservation and emission reduction. While toxic substances in biomass materials and high osmotic pressure formed in fermentation-based systems block the bioconversion processes of microorganisms. In the present study, strain T4 that isolated from tobacco waste could resist toxic inhibitors such as nicotine and was suitable for generation of 2, 3-butanediol (2, 3-BD) with a high concentration of glucose (up to 20%). 30.06 and 1.54 g/L of 2, 3-BD was generated respectively from 50 g/L of tobacco waste with and without 200 g/L glucose after fermentation for 48 h. Besides, the results of biochemical tests showed that it was gram-positive and able to liquefy gelatin, hydrolyze starch and produce catalases. It could utilize glucose but not lactose as carbohydrates during fermentation. The 16S rRNA sequence and systematic analysis revealed that T4 was identified to be a Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (B. amyloliquefaciens). This work presents a promising model microorganism chassis to use the biomass waste for high value-added biochemicals production.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the ethanol production by Wickerhamomyces sp. using soybean straw and hull hydrolysates obtained by subcritical water hydrolysis and, afterward, the biogas production using the fermented hydrolysates. Ethanol was produced using the straw and hull hydrolysates diluted and supplement with glucose, reaching 5.57 ± 0.01 g/L and 6.11 ± 0.11 g/L, respectively. The fermentation in a bioreactor with changing the pH to 7.0 allowed achieving maximum ethanol production of 4.03 and 3.60 g/L for straw and hull hydrolysates at 24 h, respectively. The biogas productions obtained for the fermented hydrolysates of straw with and without changing the pH were 739 ± 37 and 652 ± 34 NmL/gVSad, respectively. The fermented hydrolysate of hull without changing the pH presented 620 ± 26 NmL/gVSad. The soybean residues produced biofuels, indicating these residues show potential as raw material for renewable energy production.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to characterize the properties of pectin extracted from sugar beet pulp using subcritical water (SWE) as compared to conventional extraction (CE). The research involved advanced modeling using response surface methodology and optimization of operational parameters. The optimal conditions for maximum yield of pectin for SWE and CE methods were determined by the central composite design. The optimum conditions of CE were the temperature of 90 °C, time of 240 min, pH of 1, and pectin recovery yield of 20.8%. The optimal SWE conditions were liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio of 30% (v/w) at temperature of 130 °C for 20 min, which resulted in a comparable yield of 20.7%. The effect of obtained pectins on viscoamylograph pasting and DSC thermal parameters of corn starch was evaluated. The contents of galacturonic acid, degree of methylation, acetylation, and ferulic acid content were higher in the pectin extracted by SWE, while the molecular weight was lower. Similar chemical groups were characterized by FTIR in both SWE and CE pectins. Color attributes of both pectins were similar. Solutions of pectins at lower concentrations displayed nearly Newtonian behavior. The addition of both pectins to corn starch decreased pasting and DSC gelatinization parameters, but increased ΔH. The results offered a promising scalable approach to convert the beet waste to pectin as a value-added product using SWE with improved pectin properties.

Abstract
Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) production from sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB) has been barely studied using other edible biomasses. Therefore, we evaluated the XOS content as well as its purity by comparing the content of total sugars from SSB. An environmentally friendly approach involving autohydrolysis was employed, and the reaction temperature and time had variations in order to search for the conditions that would yield high-purity XOS. After autohydrolysis, the remaining solid residues, the glucan-rich fraction, were used as substrates to be enzymatically hydrolyzed for glucose conversion. The highest XOS was observed for total sugars (68.7%) at 190 °C for 5 min among the autohydrolysis conditions. However, we also suggested two alternative conditions, 180 °C for 20 min and 190 °C for 15 min, because the former condition might have the XOS at a low degree of polymerization with a high XOS ratio (67.6%), while the latter condition presented a high glucose to total sugar ratio (91.4%) with a moderate level XOS ratio (64.4%). Although it was challenging to conclude on the autohydrolysis conditions required to obtain the best result of XOS content and purity and glucose yield, this study presented approaches that could maximize the desired product from SSB, and additional processes to reduce these differences in conditions may warrant further research.

Abstract
Pecan cultivation has increased in recent years. Consequently, the amount of lignocellulosic residuals from its production has expanded. Thus, there is a necessity to explore and add value to their coproducts. The objective of this work was to obtain reducing sugars from pecan biomasses by the optimization of the subcritical water hydrolysis technology in a semi-continuous mode and the physicochemical and morphological characterization of these materials, such as SEM, TGA and FT-IR analysis. Temperatures of 180, 220 and 260 °C, water/solids mass ratio of 15 and 30 g water/g biomass and total reaction time of 15 min were used. The highest reducing sugar yield was 27.1 g/100 g of biomass, obtained at 220 °C and R-15 for pecan shells. TGA, SEM and FT-IR analysis indicated the modifications of structures and compositions of biomasses in fresh and hydrolyzed samples.

Abstract
Dwindling petroleum resources and increasing environmental concerns have stimulated the production of platform chemicals via biochemical processes through the use of renewable carbon sources. Various types of biomass wastes, which are biodegradable and vastly underutilized, are generated worldwide in huge quantities. They contain diverse chemical constituents, which may serve as starting points for the manufacture of a wide range of valuable bio-derived platform chemicals, intermediates, or end products via different conversion pathways. The valorization of inexpensive, abundantly available, and renewable biomass waste could provide significant benefits in response to increasing fossil fuel demands and manufacturing costs, as well as emerging environmental concerns. This review explores the potential for the use of available biomass waste to produce important chemicals, such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, biofuels, bioactive molecules, nanocellulose, and lignin, with a focus on commercially viable technologies.

Abstract
Abandoned oil palm trunk (OPT) is among the most abundant left-over biomass in Malaysia and is allowed to decompose naturally in the field. However, the recycling of OPT is less considered although OPT is a bioresource that has a high potential for conversion into value-added products. In this study, waste OPT was rapidly converted by hydrolysis using subcritical water (sub-CW). This work is the first attempt to explore the utilization of waste OPT based on the differences in moisture, cellulose and hemicellulose contents in the top and bottom segments, and from various ages of the waste OPT. 21- and 35-year-old OPTs were divided into top and bottom sections. The OPTs was subjected to sub-CW at a heating rate of 3.8 °C/s at various temperatures and times. The 21-year-old OPT was superior to the 35-year-old OPT for conversion into sugar and organic acid. The yield of the total sugar was between 0.41 and 0.77 kg/kg-OPT in the bottom and top sections. The excellent correlation between the sugar yield and sub-CW ion product (Kw) signified that the sub-CW facilitated the hydrolysis of hemicellulose and cellulose in the OPT. In the bottom segment, fructose had a higher yield, while in the top part glucose was dominant. Sugar degradation from the sub-CW treatment of OPT produced 0.2 kg/kg-OPT organic acids. The treatment of OPT using sub-CW showed promising results in producing sugars and organic acids.

Catalytic conversion of actual biomass to valuable chemicals is a crucial issue in green chemistry. This review discusses on the recent approach in the levulinic acid (LA) formation from three prominent generations of biomasses. Our paper highlights the impact of the nature of different types of biomass and their complex structure and impurities, different groups of catalyst, solvents, and reaction system, and condition and all related pros and cons for this process.

Abstract
This work aimed at producing fermentable sugars and bioproducts from rice husks by subcritical water hydrolysis at 25 MPa in a semi-continuous mode. The influences of temperature (180 °C; 220 °C; 260 °C) and liquid/solid ratio (7.5 g water/g husks; 15 g water/g husks) on reducing sugar yield (YRS), efficiency (E), kinetic profiles (0-15 min), composition of sugars, inhibitors and organic acids, and physicochemical characteristics of the remaining solid material were evaluated and discussed in the work. The highest YRS (18.0 ± 2.9 g/100 g husks) and E (39.5 ± 1.7 g sugars/100 g carbohydrates) were obtained at 220 °C and 7.5 gwater/g husks. In such condition, the hydrolyzed solutions presented cellobiose (18.0 g/L), xylose 17.7 g/L), arabinose (3.6 g/L), glucose (1.5 g/L), and levulinic acid (0.7 g/L). The fermentable sugars and bioproducts can be applied in several industrial fields, especially for the production of bioethanol and other higher value-added chemical compounds.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study acetyl-assisted autohydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse for the production of xylo-oligosaccharides without additional chemicals. A xylo-oligosaccharide yield of 50.35% was obtained in 10 min through sugarcane bagasse autohydrolysis at 200 °C; this yield was 49.64% after acetyl-assisted autohydrolysis of a 65:35 mixture of sugarcane bagasse/white birch at 160 °C for 100 min. The yield of xylo-oligosaccharides was close to that obtained at 180 °C/40 min and 200 °C/10 min through the autohydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse. Compared to sugarcane bagasse alone, the xylo-oligosaccharide (degree of polymerization 2-5) yield from the acetyl-assisted autohydrolysis at 200 °C for 10 min was 52.99%. In addition, the yield of glucose from the solid residue following autohydrolysis pretreatment was 96.87% after 72 h of enzymatic hydrolysis. These results demonstrate that acetyl-assisted autohydrolysis is a promising method for the production of xylo-oligosaccharides.

Abstract
Subcritical water has potential as an environmentally friendly solvent for applications including hydrolysis, liquefaction, extraction, and carbonization. Here, we report hydrolysis of sugarcane straw, an abundant byproduct of sugar production, in a semi-continuous reactor at reaction temperatures ranging from 190 to 260°C and at operating pressures of 9 and 16MPa. The target hydrolysis products were total reducing sugars. The main products of sugarcane straw hydrolysis were glucose, xylose, arabinose, and galactose in addition to 5- hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural as minor byproducts. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis provided additional information on the surface and bulk composition of the residual biomass. Char was present on samples treated at temperatures equal to and greater than 190°C. Samples treated at 260°C contained approximately 20wt% char, yet retained substantial hemicellulose and cellulose content. Hydrolysis temperature of 200°C provided the greatest TRS yield while minimizing char formation.

Abstract
The aim of present study was to obtain total reducing sugars (TRS) by hydrolysis in subcritical CO2-water from sugarcane bagasse pith (SCBP), the fibrous residue remaining after papermaking from sugarcane bagasse. The optimum hydrolysis conditions were evaluated by L16(45) orthogonal experiments. The TRS yield achieved 45.8% at the optimal conditions: 200°C, 40min, 500rmin-1, CO2 initial pressure of 1MPa and liquid-to-solid ratio of 50:1. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence nuclear magnetic resonance were used to characterize hydrolysis liquor, treated and untreated SCBP, resulting in the removal of hemicelluloses to mainly produce xylose, glucose and arabinose during hydrolysis. The severity factors had no correlation to TRS yield, indicating that the simple kinetic processes of biomass solubilisation cannot perfectly describe the SCBP hydrolysis. The first-order kinetic model based on consecutive reaction was used to obtain rate constants, activation energies and pre-exponential factors.

Abstract
In this study, pentacyclic triterpenoids (PTTs) were extracted from loquat leaves by subcritical water extraction (SWE) technique in a dynamic mode. The results revealed that PTTs yield increased up to 5.38±0.12 mg/g with the increasing temperature at 180 °C for corosolic acid (CA) and up to 7.20±0.11 mg/g at 200 °C for ursolic acid (UA) within experimental times. The optimum flow rates to obtain concentrated CA and UA extracts were found to be 33.33 and 41.67 mL/min, respectively. Furthermore, extraction temperatures strongly influenced the extraction rate as demonstrated by the rate constant of each temperature tested. Moreover, the kinetic rate constant decreased as the function of temperature indicating the yield of both CA and UA were significantly influenced by subcritical temperatures and extraction times.
