Abstract
The progression of kidney disease varies among individuals, but a general methodology to quantify disease timelines is lacking. Particularly challenging is the task of determining the potential for recovery from acute kidney injury following various insults. Here, we report that quantitation of post-transcriptional adenosine-to-inosine (A-to-I) RNA editing offers a distinct genome-wide signature, enabling the delineation of disease trajectories in the kidney. A well-defined murine model of endotoxemia permitted the identification of the origin and extent of A-to-I editing, along with temporally discrete signatures of double-stranded RNA stress and adenosine deaminase isoform switching. We found that A-to-I editing of antizyme inhibitor 1 (AZIN1), a positive regulator of polyamine biosynthesis, serves as a particularly useful temporal landmark during endotoxemia. Our data indicate that AZIN1 A-to-I editing, triggered by preceding inflammation, primes the kidney and activates endogenous recovery mechanisms. By comparing genetically modified human cell lines and mice locked in either A-to-I-edited or uneditable states, we uncovered that AZIN1 A-to-I editing not only enhances polyamine biosynthesis but also engages glycolysis and nicotinamide biosynthesis to drive the recovery phenotype. Our findings implicate that quantifying AZIN1 A-to-I editing could potentially identify individuals who have transitioned to an endogenous recovery phase. This phase would reflect their past inflammation and indicate their potential for future recovery.

Abstract
This review paper critically examines the current state of research concerning the analysis and derivatization of aldehyde, aromatic hydrocarbons and carboxylic acids components in foods and drinks samples, with a specific focus on the application of Chromatographic techniques. These diverse components, as vital contributors to the sensory attributes of food, necessitate accurate and sensitive analytical methods for their identification and quantification, which is crucial for ensuring food safety and compliance with regulatory standards. In this paper, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatographic (GC) methods for the separation, identification, and quantification of aldehydes in complex food matrices were reviewed. In addition, the review explores derivatization strategies employed to enhance the detectability and stability of aldehydes during chromatographic analysis. Derivatization methods, when applied judiciously, improve separation efficiency and increase detection sensitivity, thereby ensuring a more accurate and reliable quantification of aldehyde aromatic hydrocarbons and carboxylic acids species in food samples. Furthermore, methodological aspects encompassing sample preparation, chromatographic separation, and derivatization techniques are discussed. Validation was carried out in term of limit of detections are highlighted as crucial elements in achieving accurate quantification of compounds content. The discussion presented by emphasizing the significance of the combined HPLC and GC chromatography methods, along with derivatization strategies, in advancing the analytical capabilities within the realm of food science.

Abstract
Several medicinal herbal plants are extensively used as sources of bioactive compounds with beneficial effects on human health. This study assessed the procyanidin and polyphenol profiles together with the antioxidant potential of seven herbal medical matrices. To achieve this aim, procyanidin extraction from grape pomace was optimized and validated by monitoring monomeric-trimeric procyanidins. The proposed quantification method was applied to the seven medical herbs, and it proved to be a very efficient protocol for procyanidin-rich extracts analysis. In addition, the Paullinia cupana Kunth. seed was identified as a very rich source of procyanidins (about 5 mg/g dry matrix of each dimeric and about 3 mg/g dry matrix trimeric) with high antioxidant properties. The polyphenolic profile was assessed by HPLC-HESI-MS/MS analysis. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH assay to explore the antioxidant properties of the extracts, which were substantially higher in Peumus boldus Molina leaves extracts (935.23 ± 169 μmol of Trolox equivalent/g of dry weight) concerning the other matrices. Moreover, a high Pearson coefficient value was observed between the total flavonoid content (TFC) and DPPH in comparison with the total polyphenol content (TPC) and DPPH, indicating flavonoids as the principal bioactive with antioxidant activity in the extracts.

Abstract
Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer subtype. Currently, paclitaxel (PTX) represents the first-line therapy for TNBC; however it presents a hydrophobic behavior and produces severe adverse effects. The aim of this work is to improve the therapeutic index of PTX through the design and characterization of novel nanomicellar polymeric formulations composed of a biocompatible copolymer Soluplus® (S), surface-decorated with glucose (GS), and co-loaded either with histamine (HA, 5 mg/mL) and/or PTX (4 mg/mL). Their micellar size, evaluated by dynamic light scattering, showed a hydrodynamic diameter between 70 and 90 nm for loaded nanoformulations with a unimodal size distribution. Cytotoxicity and apoptosis assays were performed to assess their efficacy in vitro in human MDA-MB-231 and murine 4T1 TNBC cells rendering optimal antitumor efficacy in both cell lines for the nanoformulations with both drugs. In a model of TNBC developed in BALB/c mice with 4T1 cells, we found that all loaded micellar systems reduced tumor volume and that both HA and HA-PTX-loaded SG micelles reduced tumor weight and neovascularization compared with the empty micelles. We conclude that HA-PTX co-loaded micelles in addition to HA-loaded formulations present promising potential as nano-drug delivery systems for cancer chemotherapy.

Abstract
Exposure to the herbicide atrazine (ATZ) has deleterious effects on male fertility. This fact underscores the need for measures to protect against the detrimental impact of atrazine exposure on male fertility. The study assessed the protective effects of plantain-based diet (PBD) on rat testes exposed to ATZ by exploring oxid-inflammatory homeostasis. The study evaluated the preventive and therapeutic effects of PBD in a two-phased experiment. Male rats were randomized into seven groups for therapeutic model (Control, ATZ only, ATZ recovery, ATZ + 50% PBD, ATZ + 25% PBD, ATZ + 12.5% PBD and ATZ + quercetin-QUE) while the preventive model had ten groups (Control, ATZ, 50% PBD + ATZ, 25% PBD + ATZ, 12.5% PBD + ATZ and QUE + ATZ). The oxidative stress parameters (DNA fragmentation and MDA level), purinergic activity (ATPase), acetylcholine esterase, and inflammatory markers (NO level, MPO activity, and TNF-α) were increased while the Nrf2 levels were decreased by the ATZ treatment. However, the PBD was able to restore the oxido-inflammatory parameters in the rat testes. The chemical fingerprint of the diet revealed that the diets contained 16 bioactive compounds with quercetin being the most prominent compound. Overall, treatment with PBD was able to protect and prevent the toxicity caused by ATZ by modulating the redox and inflammatory status as well as purinergic activity in the rat testes.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a disorder characterized by cognitive impairment and psychotic symptoms that fluctuate over time and can only be mitigated with the chronic administration of antipsychotics. Here, we propose biodegradable microPlates made of PLGA for the sustained release of risperidone over several weeks. Two microPlate configurations - short: 20 × 20 × 10 μm; tall: 20 × 20 × 20 μm - are engineered and compared to conventional ~ 10 μm PLGA microspheres in terms of risperidone loading and release. Tall microPlates realize the slowest release documenting a 35% risperidone delivery at 100 days with a residual rate of 30 ng/ml. Short microPlates and microspheres present similar release profiles with over 50% of the loaded risperidone delivered within the first 40 days. Then, the therapeutic efficacy of one single intraperitoneal injection of risperidone microPlates is compared to the daily administration of free risperidone in heterozygous knockout mice for dysbindin-1, a clinically relevant mouse model of cognitive and psychiatric liability. In temporal order object recognition tasks, mice treated with risperidone microPlates outperform those receiving free risperidone up to 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks of observation. This suggests that the sustained release of antipsychotics from one-time microPlate deposition can rescue cognitive impairment in dysbindin mice for up to several weeks. Overall, these results demonstrate that risperidone-loaded microPlates are a promising platform for improving cognitive symptoms associated to schizophrenia. Moreover, the long-term efficacy with one single administration could be of clinical relevance in terms of patient's compliance and adherence to the treatment regimen. Single injection of long-acting risperidone-loaded µPL ameliorates the dysbindin-induced deficit in a clinically relevant mouse model of cognitive and psychiatric liability for up to 12 weeks.

Abstract
Biogenic amines are quality control criteria for foods that are potentially toxic to humans. In this study, amidation derivatization for biogenic amines and liquid-solid phase transition microextraction were carried out simultaneously for food sample pretreatment. The derivatization reaction was executed in one pot with coumarin-3-carboxylic acid as the derivatizing reagent and (1-cyano-2-ethoxy-2-oxoethylidenaminooxy)dimethylamino-morpholino-carbenium hexafluorophosphate as the coupling agent. Liquid-solid phase transition microextraction was achieved by the salting-out effect, using a phase change salt (1 M disodium hydrogen phosphate) solution. The combined derivatization and microextraction process was completed within 3 min at 30 °C, and the liquid top phase was easily obtained by placing the tube in an ice bath. Finally, a narrowbore liquid chromatograph coupled with a UV detector was used to determine the levels of six biogenic amines. The coupling agent-assisted derivatization and liquid-solid phase transition microextraction parameters were also investigated. The quantitative linear ranges were 3-400 μM for histamine, putrescine, spermidine, cadaverine, and tyramine and 5-400 μM for spermine, and the detection limit was 1 μM. The relative standard deviations of the intra- and inter-batches were <5.3% and 8.4%, respectively, while the relative error was <4.5% for both. We successfully applied this simultaneous derivatization-microextraction method to determine the biogenic amines in fermented foods.

Abstract
We developed a facile detection method of spermine based on the fluorescence (FL) quenching of the ciprofloxacin-Tb3+ complex, which shows astrong green emission. Ciprofloxacin (CP) makes efficient bondings to Tb3+ ion as a linker molecule through carboxylic and ketone groups to form a kind of lanthanide coordination polymer. The addition of spermine that competes with Tb3+ ions for the interaction with CP due to its positive charge brings about weakened coordination linkage of CP and Tb3+. The probe exhibited high sensitivity, selectivity, and good linearity in the range of 2-180 μM with a low limit of detection of 0.17 μM. Moreover, we applied this method on the paper strip test (PST), along with the integration of a smartphone and Arduino-based device. The practical reliability of the developed probe was evaluated on human serum samples with acceptable analytical results.

Abstract
Background:
Biogenic Amines (BAs) are biologically active nitrogenous organic compounds
of low molecular weight, which are frequently found in a wide variety of foods, beverages
and herbs due to their toxic potential in humans. Male Silkworm Moth (MSM), a Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM), has been exploited and utilized as nutritious liquor based on its traditional
effects in the Chinese community.
Objective:
The objective of this study was to develop an HPLC with Dns-Cl derivatization method
for characterizing overall BAs in MSM and providing data for further evaluating its activities and
safety profiles.
Methods:
The method has acceptable sensitivity, precision, accuracy, selectivity and recovery, and was
successfully applied to the determination of the BAs contents in MSM for the first time.
Results:
In the analysis of 10 batches of MSM samples, serotonin and dopamine were not found in
detectable concentrations in any samples, and the most abundant amine found was putrescine. The
mean values of tryptamine, phenylethylamine, putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, tyramine, spermidine,
and spermine determined in the samples were found to be 34.7 mg/ kg, 16.1 mg/ kg, 218.3
mg/ kg, 37.9 mg/ kg, 12.1 mg/ kg, 18.2 mg/ kg, 4.5mg/ kg, and 0.9 mg/ kg, respectively.
Conclusion:
The contents of BAs in 10 batches of MSM were below the maximum recommended
limits, and MSM can be used safely.

Abstract
We describe an optimization approach to determine simultaneously occurring chelating agents (glycine, malonic acid, citric acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, DL-malic acid, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) in an electroplating effluent using high-performance liquid chromatography. With chromatography signal area and overall resolution considered as responses, detection conditions were optimized via multiple functions combined with response surface methodology and Plackett-Burman design. Optimized detection conditions were as follows: 15 mmol/L ammonium phosphate buffer (pH 2.5), a 94:6 v/v ratio of ammonium phosphate buffer/acetonitrile, a column temperature of 23.3°C, and a mobile phase flow rate of 1 mL/min. The experimental values conformed to the predicted values and were repeatable (relative standard deviation < 6.4%) and linear (r2 > 0.991) over concentration ranges of 1-100 µmol/L. Moreover, the quantification limit (signal-to-noise ratio = 10) and the detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio = 3) ranged from 0.03 to 0.15 µmol/L and from 0.01 to 0.04 µmol/L, respectively. These results indicate that high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with statistical design may be a simple and rapid method for simultaneously determining multiple chelating agents in electroplating wastewater effectively.

Abstract
Biogenic amines (BAs) represent a considerable toxicological risk in some food and feed products. They are formed under unhygienic conditions during storage and processing; therefore, an increase in the concentrations of those metabolites is related to putrefaction. Because BAs are thermostable, they remain in food and feed that have undergone heat treatment. There are several toxicological effects, especially caused by histamine, when high concentrations of BAs are ingested by humans, depending on the food itself and also on individual susceptibility and individual health status. The present paper reviews the main BAs in meat products, their use as spoilage indicators, the risk on human health and also the contamination of by-product meals. Furthermore, we highlight the state of art regarding impact of BAs on poultry, meat and eggs.

Abstract
An HPLC-DAD method combined with second-order calibration based on the alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) algorithm with the aid of region selection was developed to simultaneously and quantitatively characterize the synergistic relationships and cumulative excretion of the four bioactive ingredients of Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae in vivo. Although the analytes spectra substantially overlapped with that of the biological matrix, the overlapping profiles between analytes and co-eluting interferences can be successfully separated and accurately quantified by the ATLD method on the basis of the strength of region selection. The proposed approach not only determined the content change but also revealed the synergistic relationships and the cumulative excretion in vivo of the four ingredients in urine and feces samples collected at different excretion time intervals. In addition, several statistical parameters were employed to evaluate the accuracy and precision of the method. Quantitative results were confirmed by HPLC-mass spectrometry. Satisfactory results indicated that the proposed approach can be utilized to investigate the pharmacokinetics of Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae excretion in vivo.

Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increased concern about the presence of toxic compounds derived from the Maillard reaction produced during food cooking at high temperatures. The main toxic compounds derived from this reaction are acrylamide and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). The majority of analytical methods require sample treatments using solvents which are highly polluting for the environment. The difficulty of quantifying HMF in complex fried food matrices encourages the development of new analytical methods. This paper provides a rapid, sensitive and environmentally-friendly analytical method for the quantification of HMF in corn chips using HPLC-DAD. Chromatographic separation resulted in a baseline separation for HMF in 3.7 min. Sample treatment for corn chip samples first involved a leaching process using water and afterwards a solid-phase extraction (SPE) using HLB-Oasis polymeric cartridges. Sample treatment optimisation was carried out by means of Box-Behnken fractional factorial design and Response Surface Methodolog y to examine the effects of four variables (sample weight, pH, sonication time and elution volume) on HMF extraction from corn chips. The SPE-HPLC-DAD method was validated. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.82 and 2.20 mg kg-1, respectively. Method precision was evaluated in terms of repeatability and reproducibility as relative standard deviations (RSDs) using three concentration levels. For repeatability, RSD values were 6.9, 3.6 and 2.0%; and for reproducibility 18.8, 7.9 and 2.9%. For a ruggedness study the Yuden test was applied and the result demonstrated the method as robust. The method was successfully applied to different corn chip samples.

Abstract
Electrochemical tyrosinase biosensors for tyramine determination were developed by the immobilization of the enzyme in calcium phosphate materials (CaPs) followed by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. Tyramine was detected by the electrochemical reduction at -0.1V of the o- enzymatically-formed dopaquinone. Three different CaPs were explored as immobilization systems, monetite, brushite and brushite cement. Biosensors based on brushite matrices provide better analytical properties than the monetite one. Compared to brushite, a 10-fold increase of sensitivity was obtained with the brushite cement-based biosensor, which highlights the effect of brushite crystal formation in the presence of the enzyme in the biosensor performance. Several variables involved in the enzyme immobilization method such as glutaraldehyde cross-linking time, PPO/brushite ratio and thickness of the brushite-enzyme film were investigated. Furthermore, the effects of pH and temperature on biosensor performance were also optimized. Brushite cement-PPO-GA biosensor resulted in a reliable, highly sensitive, fast, inexpensive and easy analytical method for tyramine detection. Under optimal conditions (time of 15min, a ratio of 1.0 and 50μg of the brushite-enzyme mixture, 20°C and pH 6,0), a linear range of 5.8 × 10-7 to 1.6 × 10-5, sensitivity 1.50 × 103mAM-1 cm-2, detection limit, 4.85 × 10-8M and a response time, 6s were obtained. The suitability of the proposed biosensor to determine the tyramine content in cheese samples has been explored. The mean analytical recovery of added tyramine in gouda and brie cheeses were found to be 95.5±5.8 and 96.9±7.5 respectively. A study of the tyramine content evolution over the course of a week under inadequate storage showed the importance of monitoring the degradation of certain foods.

Abstract
Com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade dos ovos de consumo pela pesquisa dos níveis de aminas bioativas, foram coletados, pelos serviços de inspeção oficiais, 224 amostras de ovos provenientes de cinco regiões distintas do estado de Minas Gerais, durante o período de um ano. As aminas biogênicas (putrescina, cadaverina, feniletilamina, histamina e tiramina) e as poliaminas (espermidina e espermina) foram pesquisadas por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência e detecção ultravioleta (CLAE/UV) após derivação pré-coluna com cloreto de dansila. Os resultados demonstraram que a putrescina estava presente, em baixas concentrações, em todas as amostras de gema e de albúmen. As demais aminas também foram detectadas, porém em menor frequência, e a espermina somente foi encontrada em uma amostra de albúmen. Foi concluído que os ovos de consumo produzidos no estado de Minas Gerais não são uma fonte considerável de poliaminas, importantes para o crescimento e a proliferação celular, e os baixos teores de aminas biogênicas, formadas pela descarboxilação de aminoácidos por enzimas bacterianas, não representam riscos à saúde do consumidor, o que indica que o ovo apresenta boa qualidade, tomando por base o critério de aminas bioativas.
