Speciation of very low amounts of antimony in waters using magnetic core-modified silver nanoparticles and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry

On-site monitoring of dissolved Sb species in natural waters by an automatic system using flow injection coupled with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometer

Antimony (Sb) is a toxic and potentially carcinogenic element in the environment. The toxicity of Sb(III) is ten times that of Sb(V). Therefore, on-site monitoring technique for dissolved Sb species is crucial for the study of Sb environmental processes. In this study, an automated, portable, and cost-effective system was developed for field simultaneous analysis of Sb(III) and Sb(III + V) in natural waters. The system comprised a portable atomic fluorescence spectrometer equipped with a built-in electrochemical H2 generator to reduce the consumption of acid/borohydride solution and make the atomizer more stable for on-site analysis. Flow injection technique was also used to achieve on-line pretreatment of water samples, including filtration, acidification, pre-reduction, and hydride generation procedures. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection (3σ, n = 11) of the developed method were 0.015 μg/L and the linear ranges were 0.05-5.0 μg/L for both Sb(III) and Sb(III + V). The relative standard deviations (n = 11) of the spiked samples of Sb(V) were 3.2% (0.05 μg/L), 3.3% (0.2 μg/L), and 1.7% (0.5 μg/L), respectively. The spiked recoveries of lake water, treated wastewater, and seawater ranged from 97.0% to 108.5%. The novel system of flow injection coupled with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometer (FI-HG-AFS) was applied to carry out an 18-h fixed-point monitoring at a secondary settling tank of a wastewater treatment facility in Xiamen University, and a 6-h real-time underway analysis in the surface seawater of Dongshan Bay, China, proving that the system was capable of long-term monitoring in the field.

Ultrasound assisted dispersive solid phase microextraction using polystyrene-polyoleic acid graft copolymer for determination of Sb(III) in various bottled beverages by HGAAS

A new polyoleic acid-polystyrene (PoleS) block/graft copolymer was synthesized and applied as adsorbent for ultrasound assisted dispersive solid phase microextraction (UA-DSPME) of Sb(III) in different bottled beverages and analysis using hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS). Adsorption capacity of the PoleS was 150 mg g^-1. Several sample preparation parameters such as sorbent amount, solvent type, pH, sample volume and shaking time were optimized (based on central composite design (CCD) approach) and evaluated in respect to the recovery of Sb(III). The method revealed a high tolerance limit of matrix ions presence. Under optimized conditions, linearity range, the limit of detection, the limit of quantitation, extraction recovery, enhancement factor, preconcentration factor were 5-800 ng L^-1, 1.5 ng L^-1, 5.0 ng L^-1, 96%, 82, 90, respectively. Accuracy of the UA-DSPME method was confirmed based on different certified reference materials and standard addition method. Factorial design was utilized to estimate the influences of variables of recovery of Sb(III).

Dispersive Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction as a Novelty Sample Treatment for the Determination of the Main Aflatoxins in Paprika

Dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction (DMSPE) technique is proposed as a new sensitive and effective sample treatment method for the determination of aflatoxins in paprika samples. DMSPE was followed by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry detection (UHPLC-HRMS) using a non-targeted acquisition mode for the detection of main aflatoxins (aflatoxin G1, G2, B1 and B2) and derivatives. DMSPE was based on the use of magnetic nanocomposite coated with polypyrrole (PPy) polymer and the main experimental parameters influencing the extraction efficiency in adsorption and desorption steps have been studied and optimized. Analyses were performed using 250 µL magnetic PPy nanocomposite into the sample solution, adsorbing the analytes in 30 min and desorbing them with ethyl acetate (2 mL) in 15 min. The method has been validated, obtaining quantification limits between 3.5 and 4.7 µg kg-1 and recoveries between 89.5-97.7%. The high recovery rate, wide detection range and the use for the first time of the reusable Fe3O4@PPy nanomaterial in suspension for solid food matrices, guarantee the usefulness of the method developed for adequate control of aflatoxins levels in paprika. The proposed methodology was applied for the analysis of 31 samples (conventional and organic) revealing the absence of aflatoxins in the samples.

Dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction for capsaicinoid compounds in human serum using LC-HRMS: targeted and non-targeted approaches

A new analytical method based on the use of dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction (DMSPE) is described for the preconcentration of capsaicin (CAP), dihydrocapsaicin (DCAP), and N-vanillylnonanamide (PCAP) from human serum samples. The influence of several experimental factors affecting the adsorption (nature and amount of magnetic material, adsorption time, and pH) and desorption (nature of solvent, its volume and desorption time) steps was studied. Among seven different nanomaterials studied, the best results were obtained using magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotubes, which were characterized by means of spectrometry- and microscopy-based techniques. Analyses were performed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization in positive mode (UHPLC-ESI-Q-TOF-MS). The developed method was validated by obtaining several parameters, including linearity (0.3-300 μg L^-1 range), and limits of detection which were 0.1, 0.15, and 0.17 μg L^-1 for CAP, DCAP, and PCAP, respectively. The repeatability of the method, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 7), varied from 3.4 to 11%. The serum samples were also studied through a non-targeted approach in a search for capsaicinoid metabolites and related compounds. With this objective, the fragmentation pathway of this family of compounds was initially studied and a strategy was established for the identification of novel or less studied capsaicinoid-derived compounds.

Magnetic Ion Imprinted Polymers (MIIPs) for Selective Extraction and Preconcentration of Sb(III) from Environmental Matrices

Antimony(III) is a rare element whose chemical and toxicological properties bear a resemblance to those of arsenic. As a result, the presence of Sb(III) in water might have adverse effects on human health and aquatic life. However, Sb(III) exists at very ultra-trace levels which may be difficult for direct quantification. Therefore, there is a need to develop efficient and reliable selective extraction and preconcentration of Sb(III) in water systems. Herein, a selective extraction and preconcentration of trace Sb(III) from environmental samples was achieved using ultrasound assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction (UA-MSPE) based on magnetic Sb(III) ion imprinted polymer-Fe3O4@SiO2@CNFs nanocomposite as an adsorbent. The amount of antimony in samples was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The UA-MSPE conditions were investigated using fractional factorial design and response surface methodology based on central composite design. The Sb(III)-IIP sorbent displayed excellent selectivity towards Sb(III) as compared to NIIP adsorbent. Under optimised conditions, the enrichment factor, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of UA-MSPE/ICP-OES for Sb(III) were 71.3, 0.13 µg L-1 and 0.44 µg L-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precision expressed as relative standard deviations (%RSDs, n = 10 and n = 5) were 2.4 and 4.7, respectively. The proposed analytical method was applied in the determination of trace Sb(III) in environmental samples. Furthermore, the accuracy of the method was evaluated using spiked recovery experiments and the percentage recoveries ranged from 95-98.3%.

Determination of nickel in daphne tea extract and lake water samples by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry with a zirconium-coated T-shaped slotted quartz tube-atom trap and photochemical vapor generation sample introduction

Nickel determination is important because of its use in many industrial areas and its negative effects on human health. In this study, an ultraviolet-based photochemical vapor generation (UV-PVG) setup was combined with a T-shaped zirconium-coated slotted quartz tube-atom trapping (T-SQT-AT) apparatus to boost the sensitivity of a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer for nickel determination. Nickel was separated from the sample matrix by converting it into its volatile species prior to online preconcentration by trapping on the zirconium-coated T-SQT inner surface. Analytical performance was maximized by optimizing all variable conditions. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found as 10 and 33 µg/L, respectively. Daphne tea and lake water samples were analyzed under optimum conditions, and there was no detectable nickel in the samples. For this purpose, spiking experiments were carried out for the samples in order to evaluate the applicability and accuracy of the method. The percent recovery values calculated for the two samples spiked at three different concentrations ranged between 90 and 112%. To our best knowledge, this is the first study in literature where UV-PVG was combined with T-SQT-AT for the determination of nickel in daphne tea and lake water samples prior to FAAS determination.

Cellulose-ferrite nanocomposite for monitoring enniatins and beauvericins in paprika by liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry

Paprika is considered a high-quality product being one of the most consumed spices in the world. Contamination with mycotoxins may appear due to inappropriate practices during processing or resulting from invading mould in the final manufactured products. A sample treatment based on dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction (DMSPE) has been proposed for emerging mycotoxin determination, enniatins (ENNs) and beauvericins (BEAs), in paprika. Different magnetic nanoparticles were tested, and cellulose-ferrite nanocomposite was selected for the extraction and preconcentration of the mycotoxins. Nanocomposite was characterised using field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in terms of morphology and elemental composition. High-resolution mass spectrometry allowed the quantification of the five main emerging mycotoxins and the monitoring of unexpected members of this class of toxic fungal secondary metabolites. The method has been validated, obtaining limits of quantification between 9.5 and 9.9 μg kg^-1 and testing its trueness through recovery studies, with satisfactory values of between 89.5 and 97.7%. Relative standard deviations were calculated to evaluate the intra- and inter-day precision and values lower than 8% were obtained in all cases. The analysis of 26 samples, including conventional and organic, demonstrated the presence of ENNB1 at 12.0 ± 0.6 μg kg^-1 in one of the samples studied. Other analogues ENNs and BEAs were not detected.

Chemical Fingerprint Analysis and Simultaneous Determination of Nucleosides and Amino Acids in Kang Fu Xin Liquid by High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detector

Background and Objective:

Kang Fu Xin liquid (KFX) is an official preparation made from the ethanol extract product from P. Americana. The present quality control method cannot control the quality of the preparation well. The aim of the present study is to establish a convenient HPLC method for multicomponents determination combined with fingerprint analysis for quality control of KFX.

Methods:

An HPLC-DAD method with gradient elution and detective wavelength switching program was developed to establish HPLC fingerprints of KFX, and 38 batches of KFX were compared and evaluated by similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA), and principal component analysis (PCA). Meanwhile, six nucleosides and three amino acids, including uracil, hypoxanthine, uric acid, adenosine, xanthine, inosine, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan in KFX were determined based on the HPLC fingerprints.

Results:

An HPLC method assisted with gradient elution and wavelength switching program was established and validated for multicomponents determination combined with fingerprint analysis of KFX. The results demonstrated that the similarity values of the KFX samples were more than 0.845. PCA indicated that peaks 4 (hypoxanthine), 7 (xanthine), 9 (tyrosine), 11, 13 and 17 might be the characteristic contributed components. The nine constituents in KFX, uracil, hypoxanthine, uric acid, adenosine, xanthine, inosine, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan, showed good regression (R2 > 0.9997) within test ranges and the recoveries of the method for all analytes were in the range from 96.74 to 104.24%. The limits of detections and quantifications for nine constituents in DAD were less than 0.22 and 0.43 μg•mL-1, respectively.

Conclusion:

The qualitative analysis of chemical fingerprints and the quantitative analysis of multiple indicators provide a powerful and rational way to control the KFX quality for pharmaceutical companies.

Speciation of chromium in waters using dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with magnetic ferrite and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

The combination of a solid-phase microextraction process with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry provides a very sensitive determination method for determining chromium in waters. Freshly prepared ferrite particles are used to retain the chromium species, and then separated by a magnet without the need for a centrifugation step. The solid phase is suspended in water and directly introduced into the graphite furnace to obtain the analytical signal. The complexation of Cr(III) with ethylenediaminetetraacetate allows the selective retention of Cr(VI), and thus the speciation of the metal. The procedure is sensitive (0.01 µg L⁻¹ detection limit when using a 10 mL sample aliquot) and reproducible (5% relative standard deviation for five consecutive experiments at the 0.3 µg L⁻¹ level). The reliability of the procedure is verified by analysing five certified water samples.

Nanomaterials in speciation analysis of metals and metalloids

Nanomaterials have draw extensive attention from the scientists in recent years mainly due to their unique and attractive thermal, mechanical and electronic properties, as well as high surface to volume ratio and the possibility for surface functionalization. Whereas mono functional nanomaterials providing a single function, the preparation of core/shell nanoparticles allows different properties to be combined in one material. Their properties have been extensively exploited in different extraction techniques to improve the efficiency of separation and preconcentration, analytical selectivity and method reliability. The aim of this paper is to provide an updated revision of the most important features and application of nanomaterials (metallic, silica, polymeric and carbon-based) for solid phase extraction and microextraction techniques in speciation analysis of some metals and metalloids (As, Cr, Sb, Se). Emphasis will be placed on the presentation of the most representative works published in the last five years (2015-2019).

Determination of Trace Antimony (III) in Water Samples with Single Drop Microextraction Using BPHA-[C4mim][PF6] System Followed by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

A new sensitive method for antimony (III) determination by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) has been developed by using N-benzoyl-N-phenylhydroxylamine (BPHA) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C₄mim][PF₆]) single drop microextraction. The single drop microextraction (SDMM) system is more competitive compared with other traditional extraction methods. Under the optimized conditions, the limit of detection (signal-to-noise ratio is 3) and the enrichment factor of antimony (III) are 0.01 μg·L^-1 and 112, respectively. The relative standard deviation of the 0.5 μg·L^-1 antimony (III) is 4.2% (n=6). The proposed method is rather sensitive to determinate trace antimony (III) in water.

Fabrication of Sb3+sensor based on 1,1′-(-(naphthalene-2,3-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(naphthalen-2-ol)/nafion/glassy carbon electrode assembly by electrochemical approach

A new Schiff base named 1,1′-(-(naphthalene-2,3-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(naphthalen-2-ol) (NDNA) was synthesized by condensation reaction and then characterized by spectroscopic techniques for structure elucidation.

Determination of antimony compounds in waters and juices using ion chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

A method was developed by coupling ion chromatography (IC) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the speciation of antimony. In this study, antimony species such as antimonite [Sb(III)], antimonate [Sb(V)] and trimethyl antimony(V) (TMeSb) were separated in less than 8min using anion exchange chromatography with a Hamilton PRP-X100 column as the stationary phase. Mobile phase A was 20mmolL^-1 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), 2mmolL^-1 potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP) in 1% v/v methanol (pH 5.5) and 20mmolL^-1 EDTA, 2mmolL^-1 KHP, 40mmolL^-1 (NH₄)₂CO₃ in 1% v/v methanol (pH 9.0) formed mobile phase B. Detection limits and relative standard deviations (RSD) were 0.012-0.032ngmL^-1 and 2.2-2.8% respectively. This method was applied to bottled waters and fruit juices purchased in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In water samples, Sb(V) was the major species where as in juices organometallic Sb species were also present.
