Abstract
The construction, structural identifications along with compositional properties, using TEM, FT-IR, and XPS spectroscopies, of an innovative light-induced multi-arm azobenzenes based Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Azo-Fe3O4 MNPs) are being reported. Such organic (light-sensitive dendrimers-like structure), inorganic (magnet core), hybrid material has been applied as an efficient recoverable/reusable extractive sorbent for the detection of phthalate plasticizers from acetate buffer solution. The extraction study was controlled within consecutive procedures via UV-light exposure to achieve pore-size control which then further subjected for the evaluation of the analytes' retention, separation, and release as well as the detection of the phthalate pollutants using GCMS-. Various experimental conditions, such as time of extraction, salt concentration, pH, and desorption time, were studied and adjusted. Additionally, the extraction repeatability (RSD from 0.46 % to 6.12%, n = 5) of the studied sorbent was comparable to other published work. The linear range extended from 6.25 to 100 μg L-¹ and detection limits (LOD) within the range of 41- 150 ng L-1 were achieved, demonstrating good linearity with values ranging from 0.9992 to 0.9892. The inter-batch and intra-batch RSD ranged from 0.46 % to 6.12 %, respectively. Additionally, it provides effective detection of 2-naphthol when used as a SALDI substrate.

Abstract
Covalent organic framework (COF) film-based solid-phase extraction (F-SPE) has garnered great attention in sample pretreatment. However, harsh synthesis conditions of COF films have severely hindered their potential applications. In this study, a kind of COF (TPB-DMTP) films were fabricated via a liquid-liquid interfacial synthesis method at a mild condition. The obtained films exhibited excellent extraction performance towards microcystins (MCs, an algal toxin) due to their porous structure, high specific surface area and abundant accessible adsorption sites. Coupled TPB-DMTP films-based F-SPE with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), a sensitive and environment-friendly analytical method was established for MCs detection. Under the optimal conditions, this method possessed wide linear ranges (2.0-800.0 pg mL-1) with good linearity (R ≥ 0.9991), low limits of detection (0.8-3.0 pg mL-1) and satisfactory precision (RSDs ≤7.1 %), which then successfully applied for MCs detection in actual aquatic organism samples. Trace amounts of MC-RR (42.4 pg mL-1) and MC-YR (14.6 pg mL-1) were detected in the mussels. The results demonstrate the excellent application potential of COF films in sample pretreatment.

Abstract
In this work, a novel electrospun nanofiber (PAN/TpBD; 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol [Tp] and benzidine [BD]; polyacrylonitrile [PAN]) was fabricated via a facile electrospinning method and utilized as adsorbent in thin film microextraction (TFME) of phthalate esters (PAEs) (dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, diallyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, and dioctyl phthalate) in biodegradable plastics. The prepared PAN/TpBD combines the strong stability of nanofibers with increased exposure sites for covalent organic frameworks and enhanced interactions with the target, thus improving the enrichment effect on the target. The extraction efficiency of PAN/TpBD reached above 80%. Based on PAN/TpBD, a TFME-high-performance liquid chromatography method was established, and the experimental parameters were optimized. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the PAEs of this method varied linearly in the range of 10-10 000 µg/L with low detection limits (0.69-2.72 µg/L). The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values of the PAEs were less than 8.04% and 8.73%, respectively. The adsorbent can achieve more than 80% recovery of the five targets after six times reuse. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of trace PAEs in biodegradable plastics with recoveries ranging from 80.1% to 113.4% and relative standard deviations were less than 9.45%. The as-synthesized PAN/TpBD adsorbent exhibited great potential in PAE analysis.

Abstract
A high-throughput sample pre-treatment method combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed to analyze phthalates (PAEs) in food and food contact package samples. Thin film microextraction (TFME) in 96-blade format was used to pre-treat 96 samples simultaneously. Octadecyl groups functionalized fibrous mesoporous silica nanospheres, namely C18-FMSNs, were synthesized and used as TFME coating material. The coating was fabricated by spraying a slurry of C18-FMSNs and polyacrylontrile (PAN) mixture with a commercial portable spraypen. The prepared C18-FMSNs/PAN coatings exhibited good reproducibility, repeatability and reusability. The optimized TFME conditions for PAEs consisted of extraction at pH 4.0 for 50 min, and desorption by methanol/acetonitrile (25/75, V/V) for 40 min. The pretreatment time for each sample was approximately 1.3 min. This TFME-HPLC method showed good linearity for eight PAEs within the concentration range of 0.5-1000 ng mL-1, with the coefficients higher than 0.9972. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.096-0.26 ng mL-1 and 0.32-0.86 ng mL-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day RSD % were below 6.6 % and 8.4 %, respectively, indicating good precision. The PAEs analysis in real samples showed that dibutyl phthalate (DBP) of 2.3 ± 0.3 ng mL-1 and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) of 5.5 ± 0.8 ng mL-1 in boxed milk, dimethyl phthalate (DMP) of 12.6 ± 0.8 ng mL-1, DBP of 3.2 ± 0.4 ng mL-1and DEHP of 14.3 ± 0.7 ng mL-1 in the simulated water migration of plastic box, as well as DMP of 19.0 ± 0.6 ng mL-1, DBP of 25.6 ± 0.9 ng mL-1 and DEHP of 49.5 ± 2.8 ng mL-1 in the simulated ethanol migration of plastic box were determined, respectively. In addition, the detection of PAEs in all the real samples showed good recovery ranging from 85.6 to 110 % and lower RSDs % (<7.2 %).

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a green, environmentally friendly, and efficient technique for sample pre-treatment. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a class of porous materials formed by covalent bonds, have gained prominence owing to their remarkable attributes, including large specific surface area, tunable pore size, and robust thermal/chemical stability. These characteristics have made COFs highly appealing as potential coatings for SPME fiber over the past decades. In this review, various methods used to prepare SPME coatings based on COFs are presented. These methods encompass physical adhesion, sol-gel processes, in situ growth, and chemical cross-linking strategies. In addition, the applications of COF-based SPME coating fibers for the preconcentration of various targets in environmental, food, and biological samples are summarized. Moreover, not only their advantages but also the challenges they pose in practical applications are highlighted. By shedding light on these aspects, this review aims to contribute to the continued development and utilization of COF materials in the field of sample pretreatment.

Abstract
Phthalates (PAEs) are a group of synthetic esters of phthalic acid compounds mostly used as plasticizers in plastic materials but are widely applied in most industries and products. As plasticizers in plastic materials, they are not chemically bound to the polymeric matrix and easily leach out. Logically, PAEs should be prevalent in the environment, but their prevalence, transport, fate, and effects have been largely unknown until recently. This has been attributed, inter alia, to a lack of standardized analytical procedures for identifying them in complex matrices. Nevertheless, current advancements in analytical techniques facilitate the understanding of PAEs in the environment. It is now known that they can potentially impact ecological and human health adversely, leading to their categorization as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, carcinogenic, and liver- and kidney-failure-causing agents, which has landed them among contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Thus, this review article reports and discusses the developments and advancements in PAEs' standard analytical methods, facilitating their emergence from obscurity. It further explores the opportunities, challenges, and limits of their advancements.

Abstract
Phthalate esters (PAEs) are known as esters of phthalic acid, which are commonly used as plasticizers in the plastic industry. Due to the lack of chemical bonding with the polymer matrix, these compounds are easily separated from plastic products and enter the environment. To investigate the growth of concentration of PAEs like DBP (Dibutyl phthalate), DEP (Diethyl phthalate), DMP (Dimethyl phthalate), DIBP (Diisobutyl phthalate), and TPMBP (tris(2-methylbutyl) phosphate) in different water sources, a study from January 01, 1976, to April 30, 2021, was implemented via a global systematic review plus meta-analysis in which, 109 articles comprising 4061 samples, 4 water types, and 27 countries were included. Between various types of water sources, river water and lake water were the most contaminated resources with PAEs. Among all studies of PAEs, DBP and DEP with the values >15,573 mg L-1 have the highest average concentration and TPMBP with the value 0.002885 mg L-1 has the lowest average concentration in water sources. The most contaminated water sources with PAEs were in Nigeria and the least contaminated was in China. Besides, Monte-Carlo simulation indicated that for DMP and DEP minimum values that are lower than the acceptable limit are generated. However, most of the population (>75 %) is at risk for both adults and child cases. For DIBP and DBP the situation is much worse, the simulations not providing at least one case where the R index is lower than the acceptable limit of 1E-06.

Abstract
Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely distributed in the environment, and this has caused serious health and safety concerns. Development of rapid and ultrasensitive identification and analysis methods for phthalate esters is urgent and highly desirable. In this work, a novel nitrogen-rich covalent organic framework (N-TTI) derived quinoline bridging covalent organic framework (N-QTTI) was fabricated and used as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the ultrasensitive determination of phthalate esters in water samples. The physical and chemical properties of N-QTTI were investigated sufficiently. The N-QTTI-coated fiber demonstrates a superior enrichment performance than either the N-TTI-coated fiber or commercial fibers under the optimized SPME conditions. For the first time, we propose a semi-immersion strategy for the extraction of PAEs from water samples based on N-QTTI-coated SPME fibers. Combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the developed method N-QTTI-SPME-GC-MS exhibits a wide linear range with a satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.995). The limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) and the limits of quantification (LOQs, S/N = 10) were 0.17-1.70 and 0.57-5.60 ng L-1, respectively. The repeatability of the new method was examined using relative standard deviations (RSDs) between intraday and interday data, which were 0.38-7.98% and 1.22-6.60%, respectively. The spiked recoveries at three levels of 10, 100, and 1000 ng L-1 were in the range of 90.0-106.2% with RSDs of less than 7.48%. The enrichment factors ranged from 291 to 17180. When compared to previously published works, the LODs of the newly established method were improved 5-5400 times, and the enrichment factors were increased by at least 8 times. The absorption mechanism was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and noncovalent interaction force analysis. The technique was successfully employed for detecting PAEs in water samples.

Abstract
The first-ever attempt to apply nickel gallic acid metal-organic framework (NiGA MOF) in analytical method development was done in this research by the extraction of some plasticizers from aqueous media. The greenness of the method is owing to the use of gallic acid and nickel as safe reagents and water as the safest solvent. Low boiling point solvents were applied as desorption solvents that underwent temperature-assisted evaporation in the preconcentration step. Performing the evaporation using a low-temperature water bath for a short period of time streamlines the preconcentration section. Into the solution of interest enriched with sodium sulfate, a mg amount of NiGA MOF was added alongside vortexing to extract the analytes. Following centrifugation and discarding the supernatant, a μL level of diethyl ether was added onto the analyte-loaded NiGA MOF particles and vortexed. The analyte-enriched diethyl ether phase was transferred into a conical bottom glass test tube and located in a water bath set at the temperature of 35 °C under a laboratory hood. After the evaporation, a μL level of 1,2-dibromoethane was added to the test tube and vortexed to dissolve the analytes from the inner perimeter of the tube. One microliter of the organic phase was injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with flame ionization detection. Appreciable extraction recoveries (61-98%), high enrichment factors (305-490), low limits of detection (0.80-1.74 μg L-1) and quantification (2.64-5.74 μg L-1), and wide linear ranges (5.74-1000 μg L-1) were obtained at the optimum conditions.

Abstract
As a commonly well-known industrial chemical, phthalates are produced in high volumes to be used in various consumer products (e.g., plasticizers, medical devices, construction materials, and toys) to enhance softness, durability, transparency, and flexibility. Phthalates are generally not chemically bonded to the polymer chain of the plastic in which they are mixed. Thus, they may leach, migrate, or evaporate into indoor/outdoor air, and foodstuffs. In this review, a comprehensive overview of several sample preparation methods coupled with gas chromatography for the analysis of phthalates in various kinds of complex matrices, with a focus on the last 20 years' worth of papers. The review begins by highlighting the environmental significance of phthalate pollution along with the various routes to their exposure to general population. Then, the discussion is extended to cover the pretreatment and extraction techniques for phthalates for their quantitation based on gas chromatographic approach. Finally, the present and future challenges for the detection of phthalates in aqueous and food matrices are discussed.

Abstract
In the current study, salt- and pH-induced homogeneous dispersive solid phase extraction was developed using albumin as a sorbent for the extraction of some pesticides (diazinon, diniconazole, haloxyfop-R-methyl, and hexaconazole) from fruit juice of orange, pomegranate, and barberry. The extracted analytes were more concentrated by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction to obtain high enrichment factors and low detection limits prior to their determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In the extraction process, human serum albumin solution was added to the sample solution at the μL-level and a homogeneous solution was obtained. Then, albumin was precipitated into the solution by adding an inorganic salt and decreasing the solution pH. By doing so, the analytes were adsorbed by albumin effectively due to their high adsorption capacity and large surface area. Following this, the pesticides were eluted from the albumin sorbent using an elution solvent and used in a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction step. Under the optimum extraction conditions, low limits of detection and quantification were achieved in the ranges of 0.02-0.04 and 0.07-0.13 ng mL-1, respectively. The calibration curves were linear in the range of 0.13-250 ng mL-1. Relative standard deviation as a criterion for precision and the method repeatability were in the ranges of 2.9-4.2% for intra- (n = 5, C = 5 or 50 ng mL-1) and 3.2-5.2% for inter-day (n = 5, 50 ng mL-1) precisions. The enrichment factors and extraction recoveries were in the ranges of 390-460 and 78-92%, respectively. Finally, the offered procedure was applied for the analysis of pesticide residues in some fruit juice samples.

Abstract
In this work, a novel spherical metal organic framework (MOF) was first in situ grown on the surface of iron wire (IW), in which IW served as the substrate and metal source for MOF (type NH2-MIL88) growth without adding additional metal salts in the process, while spherical NH2-MIL88 provided more active sites for further construction of multifunctional composites. Subsequently, a covalent organic framework (COF) was covalently bonded to the surface of the NH2-MIL88 to obtain the IW@NH2-MIL88@COF fibers, which were used for headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in milk samples prior to determination by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Compared with the fiber prepared by physical coating, the IW@NH2-MIL88@COF fiber prepared by in situ growth and covalent bonding exhibits better stability and possesses more uniform layer. The extraction mechanism of the IW@NH2-MIL88@COF fiber for PAHs was discussed, which mainly owed to π-π interactions and hydrophobic interactions. After optimization of the primary extraction conditions, the SPME-GC-FID method was established for five PAHs with a wide linear range (1-200 ng mL-1), good linearity coefficient (0.9935-0.9987) and low detection limits (0.017-0.028 ng mL-1). The relative recoveries for PAHs detection in milk samples ranged from 64.69 to 113.97%. This work not only provides new ideas for the in situ growth of other types of MOF, but also provides new methods for the construction of multifunctional composites.

Abstract
Construction of different surface wettability is meaningful for the interaction between the sorbent surface and target components. In the current study, four kinds of stainless-steel wires (SSWs) with different hydrophobic/hydrophilic property were prepared and used as the absorbents to enrich the target compounds with different polarity. Comparative extraction of six non-polar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and six polar estrogens was carried out by in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME). The results showed that two SSWs with the superhydrophobic surfaces exhibited high extraction capacity to the non-polar PAHs with the superior enrichment factor (EF) in the range of 29-672 and 57-744, respectively. In contrast, the superhydrophilic SSWs demonstrated higher enrichment efficiency for the polar estrogens than other hydrophobic SSWs. On the basis of optimized conditions, a validated analysis method was established using six PAHs as model analytes for IT-SPME-HPLC. Acceptable linear ranges (0.5-10 μg L-1) and low detection limits (0.0056-0.32 μg L-1) were achieved using the superhydrophobic wire modified by perfluorooctyl trichlorosilane (FOTS). The relative recoveries spiked at 2, 5 and 10 μg L-1 in the lake water samples were in the range of 81.5%-113.7%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of intraday (≤0.8%, n = 3) and interday (≤5.3%, n = 3) tests demonstrated the good extraction repeatability for the same extraction tube. Satisfactory repeatability for the preparation of extraction tubes (n = 3) was also obtained with the RSD values in the range of 3.6%-8.0%.

Abstract
Electro-enhanced solid-phase microextraction (EE-SPME) is a bright separation and enrichment technique that integrates solid-phase microextraction with the electric field. It retains the excellent extraction performance of SPME technology while having the advantages of efficient driving of electric field and special interaction between the electric field and electrons in the molecules of material structure. Replacing conventional SPME fibers with highly efficient and highly conductive original EE-SPME fibers is critical for the practical applications of these technologies. Here, a novel fiber preparation strategy was proposed to obtain a highly conductive porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (POR-COF) by one-step electropolymerization. Benefiting from the excellent semiconducting properties of porphyrin groups, the POR-COF can be spontaneously polymerized on the fiber surface under an appropriate voltage within a few hours. Its performance was evaluated by the EE-SPME of phthalate esters (PAEs) from food and environmental samples, followed by gas chromatography-tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) technology. The results showed that the POR-COF fiber has been successfully used for the detection of trace PAEs in beverages, industrial wastewater, lake water, and oyster samples with high adsorption selectivity and satisfactory sensitivity. The remarkable extraction properties are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect from material characteristics and electrical parameters' control in the extraction process. The presented strategy for the controlled design and synthesis of highly conductive porphyrin-based covalent organic framework fibers offers prospects in developing EE-SPME technologies.

Abstract
Owing to various health threats associated with phthalic acid esters (PAEs), this category of endocrine-disrupting compounds has attracted more and more public scrutiny. However, the efficient preconcentration of PAEs from complex food-contacted plastics still remains challenging. Herein, three covalent triazine-based frameworks (CTFs) were constructed by facile Friedel-Crafts reactions of cyanuric chloride (CC), with triptycene (TPC), fluorene (FL) and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene (TPB), respectively. Three CTFs were then employed as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coatings for the extraction of PAEs. Benefiting from the large surface area and high pore volume, the newly-synthesized CC-TPC based SPME method exhibited large enrichment factors (978-2210), low limits of detection (0.027-0.10 ng g - 1), satisfactory linear ranges (0.09-20 ng g - 1), acceptable repeatabilities (4.3-9.6%) and high relative recoveries (92.0-104.6%).

Abstract
A novel nano petal-shaped covalent organic frameworks modified magnetic polystyrene-divinylbenzene-glycidylmethacrylate (NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA) microsphere has been synthesized. It is a perfect combination of high productivity of PS/DVB/GMA microspheres and excellent enrichment efficiency of COF particles, and the excellent properties of NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA microspheres are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorbent can extract illicit drugs via the reverse-phase interactions provided by benzene ring on the polymer backbone and the hydrogen bonding interactions provided by functional group (-NH-) on the COF particles. Based on using NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA as sorbents, an easiness-to-handle of magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction (Mag-dSPE) procedure is proposed for the simultaneous preconcentration of 12 illicit drugs from wastewater. The obtained results show high extraction efficiency of NP-COF@Mag-PS/DVB/GMA to illicit drugs with recoveries between 81.6 and 116%. Furthermore, a liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the determination of 12 illicit drugs from wastewater at sub-ppt levels has been proposed and validated with the pretreatment of samples by Mag-dSPE. The limits of quantification (LOQs) for the 12 illicit drugs are between 0.40 and 4.90 ng/L. Validation results on linearity, specificity, trueness and precision, as well as on application to the analysis of 12 illicit drugs in ten real samples demonstrate the applicability to environment monitoring analysis.

Abstract
Toxic and hazardous substances constitute a category of compounds that are potentially hazardous to humans, other organisms, and the environment. These substances include pesticides (benzoylureas, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids), persistent organic pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluorinated compounds), plasticizers (phthalate esters, phenolic endocrine disruptors), medicines (sulfonamides, non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, tetracyclines, fluoroquinone antibiotics), heterocyclic aromatic amines, algal toxins, and radioactive substances. Discharge of these toxic and harmful substances, as well as their possible persistence and bioaccumulation, pose a major risk to human health, often to the extent of being life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to analyze and detect toxic and hazardous substances in the environment, drinking water, food, and daily commodities. Sample pretreatment is an imperative step in most of the currently used analytical methods, especially in the analysis of trace toxic and harmful substances in complex samples. An efficient and fast sample pretreatment technology not only helps improve the sensitivity, selectivity, reproducibility, and accuracy of analytical methods, but also avoids contamination of the analytical instruments and even damages the performance and working life of instruments. Sample pretreatment techniques widely used in the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances include solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), and dispersed solid-phase extraction (DSPE). The adsorbent material plays a key role in these pretreatment techniques, thereby determining their selectivity and efficiency. In recent years, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted increasing attention in sample pretreatment. COFs represent an exciting new class of porous crystalline materials constructed via the strong covalent bonding of organic building units through a reversible condensation reaction. COFs present four advantages: (1) precise control over structure type and pore size by consideration of the target molecular structure based on the connectivity and shape of the building units; (2) post-synthetic modification for chemical optimization of the pore interior toward optimized interaction with the target; (3) straightforward scalable synthesis; (4) feasible formation of composites with magnetic nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene, silica, etc., which is beneficial to enhance the performance of COFs and meet the requirement of diverse pretreatment technologies. Because of the well-defined crystalline porous structures and tailored functionalities, COFs have excellent potential for use in target extraction. However, some issues need to be addressed for the application of COFs in the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances. (1) For the sample matrix, most of the reported COFs are highly hydrophobic, which limits their dispersibility in water-based samples, leading to poor extraction performance. COFs with good dispersibility in water-based samples are urgently required. (2) Besides, COFs rely on hydrophobic interaction, size repulsion, π-π stacking, and Van der Waals forces to extract target substances, but they are not effective for some polar targets. Thus, it is necessary to develop COFs with high affinity for polar toxic and hazardous substances. (3) Methods for the synthesis of COFs have evolved from solvothermal methods to room-temperature methods, mechanical grinding, microwave-assisted synthesis, ion thermal methods, etc. Most of the existing methods are time-consuming, laborious, and environmentally unfriendly. The starting materials are too expensive to prepare COFs in large quantities. More effort is required to improve the synthesis efficiency and overcome the obstacles in the application of COFs for extraction. This article summarizes and reviews the research progress in COFs toward the extraction of toxic and hazardous substances in recent years. Finally, the application prospects of COFs in this field are summarized, which serves as a reference for further research into pretreatment technologies based on COFs.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of emerging materials that are synthesized based on the covalent bonds between different building blocks. COFs possess unique attributes in terms of high porosity, tunable structure, ordered channels, easy modification, large surface area, and great physical and chemical stability. Due to these features, COFs have been extensively applied as adsorbents in various extraction modes. Enhanced extraction performance could be reached with modified COFs, where COFs are presented as composites with other materials including nanomaterials, carbon and its derivatives, silica, metal-organic frameworks, molecularly imprinted polymers, etc. This review article describes the recent advances, developments, and applications of COF-based materials being utilized as adsorbents in the extraction methods. The COFs, their properties, their synthesis approaches as well as their composite structures are reviewed. Most importantly, suggested mechanisms for the extraction of analyte(s) by COF-based materials are also discussed. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of COF-based materials in extraction methods are summarized and considered in order to provide more insights into this field.

Abstract
Imine covalent organic frameworks (I-COFs), including imine-linked COFs and hydrazone-linked COFs, are a new type of crystalline porous organic materials constructed by the condensation of organic monomers by the Schiff-base reaction. Because they are composed of lightweight elements linked by strong covalent bonds, I-COF materials possess the advantages of low skeleton density, large surface area, high porosity, abundant monomer species, controllable pore size, functionalized structure, diverse synthetic methods, excellent adsorption performance, outstanding physical and chemical stabilities, etc. In recent years, interest in the field of I-COFs has increased tremendously because of their exceptional performance and broad applications in gas storage, gas separation, catalysis, sensing, photoelectric materials, sample pretreatment, drug delivery, and other fields. To date, imine bonds are one of the most widely used covalent bonds in COFs, and represent one of the most important ways to obtain I-COFs with excellent chemical stabilities. The synthesis methods for I-COFs include solvothermal synthesis, microwave synthesis, mechanochemical grinding synthesis, and room-temperature synthesis methods. Solvothermal synthesis is the most extensively used method for the production of I-COFs with high specific surface areas and good thermal stabilities. The microwave synthesis method is conducive to the rapid synthesis of COFs in industry, providing a more time-saving, simpler, and safer route for large-scale preparation of I-COFs. The mechanochemical grinding synthesis of porous solids has gained importance as an alternative to conventional solvothermal synthesis, because the process is quick, environment-friendly, and potentially scalable. The room-temperature method is characterized by mild reaction conditions and rapid reactions. It is an energy-saving, economic, safe, and green synthesis method, which has emerged as a hot spot in the preparation of I-COFs in recent years. Research progress over the past years on the application of I-COFs in the field of materials science has undoubtedly established the basis of its application in analytical chemistry. Owing to the excellent physical and chemical properties of I-COF materials, they are suitable for use as separation and enrichment media for trace target compounds in complex samples. The high specific surface area and porosity, extended conjugate network skeleton, and π-electron-rich nature of the materials endow it with a high adsorption capacity. These materials are highly enriched in target analytes by π-π interactions, acid-base interactions, donor-acceptor interactions, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, and other intermolecular interactions. Precise control of the microporous structure of I-COFs was obtained by controlling the chain length, geometric structure, doping elements, and substituent groups of the organic monomers. Selective enrichment of target trace substances was achieved by modifying the groups of I-COFs based on the principle of host guest adaptation, molecular sieving, or microporous filling effect. At present, research on the synthesis of I-COF materials is in the stage of rapid development, and many I-COFs with excellent properties and great application potential have been synthesized, allowing widespread application of I-COFs in sample pretreatment medium. This review summarizes the current state-of-the-art on the main types and synthetic methods of I-COFs, as well as the applications of I-COFs in solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction, and solid-phase microextraction. The prospects of I-COFs in sample pretreatment are also presented.

Abstract
Cyanuric chloride and 4,4'-diamino-p-terphenyl were adopted as monomers to synthesize poly (4,4'-diamino-p-terphenyl-triazine) (PDT) covalent organic polymer. PDT coated stir bar was prepared and evaluated for the extraction of five phthalate esters (PAEs) with relatively lower logP values (2.7-4.9), including diethyl phthalate, diallyl phthalate, dipropyl phthalate, benzylbutyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate. It exhibited higher extraction recovery (> 65%) and faster extraction kinetics (50 min vs 240 min) for target PAEs over commercial polydimethylsiloxane coated stir bar. Based on the superior performance, PDT coated stir bar sorptive extraction was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection for trace analysis of five PAEs plasticizers. The limits of detection for target PAEs were 0.04-0.27 μg/L, with the enrichment factors of 54-80-fold. The potential of the method was demonstrated by detecting five target PAEs in Chinese liquor and mineral water samples. No target analytes were detected in Chinese liquor sample, and recoveries of 85.4-109% were obtained for target analytes in spiked liquor samples; trace diethyl phthalate (1.19-2.98 μg/L) and dibutyl phthalate (0.77-0.91 μg/L) were detected in two mineral water samples, with recoveries of 85.4-117% and 87.4-117% respectively in spiked mineral water samples.

Abstract
A facile and rapid strategy for preparation of covalent organic framework (COF) coated fibers at ambient temperature is urgently needed for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technology. In this work, an in situ room-temperature rapid growth strategy was developed to high-efficiently fabricate imine-linked COF (TPB-DVA) coated fibers in as little as 30 min at room temperature, and the thickness of the coating reached 9 μm. The prepared TPB-DVA coated fiber offer high thermal and chemical stability, and outstanding service lifetime. Moreover, we generalize this strategy to other two imine-linked COF (TPB-DMTP and TFPB-TAPB) coated fibers and the fibers were fabricated at room temperature for 3 h and 12 h, respectively, which demonstrate the applicability of this strategy. Subsequently, a SPME-GC-MS/MS analytical method was developed for trace pyrethroids (PYs) detection, which exhibited high enhancement factors (EFs, 2700-13195), wide linear range (0.08-800 ng L-1), low limits of detection (LODs, 0.02-0.20 ng L-1), and good repeatability (RSD ≤ 8.5%, n = 6). Furthermore, the developed analytical method was applied to tea samples and trace PYs (1.31-4.32 ng L-1) were found with satisfactory recovery (80.2-119.8%). The above results demonstrated that the feasibility of the developed strategy for the facile and rapid fabrication of imine-linked COF coated fibers.

Abstract
Herein, we synthesized a kind of magnetic covalent organic framework nanohybrids (NiFe2O4@COF), and integrated it with polydimethyl siloxane and silicone rubber curing agent for solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating. The fiber coating demonstrated a porous and uniform surface with the BET specific surface of 169.7 m2 g-1. As for seven environmental analytes, the NiFe2O4@COF-based SPME fiber coating gave the higher extraction recoveries for triclosan (TCS) and methyltriclosn (MTCS) than those of fenpropathrin, bifenthrin, permethrin, fenvalerate and deltamethrin. Several operational parameters were rigorously optimized, such as extraction temperature, extraction time, thermal desorption time, solution pH and salt effect. Combined with the GC-ECD detection, the newly developed microextraction method supplied the wide linear range of 0.1-1000 µg L-1 with the correlation coefficients of > 0.9995. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantitation (LOQs) reached as low as 1-7 ng L-1 and 3.3-23 ng L-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precisions in six replicates (n = 6 ) were < 3.55% and < 5.06%, respectively, and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (n = 3) was < 7.64%. To evaluate its feasibility in real samples, the fortified recoveries for TCS and MTCS, at low (0.2 µg L-1), middle (2.0 µg L-1) and high (20.0 µg L-1) levels, varied between 81.9% and 119.1% in tap, river and barreled waters as well as male, female and children urine samples. Especially, it is worth mentioning that the NiFe2O4@COF-based SPME coating fiber can be recycled for at least 150 times with nearly unchanged extraction efficiency. Moreover, the extraction recoveries by the as-fabricated fiber coating were much higher than those by three commercial fibers (PDMS, PDMS/DVB and PDMS/DVB/CAR). Overall, the NiFe2O4@COF-based SPME is a convenient, sensitive, efficient and "green" pretreatment method, thereby possessing important application prospects in trace monitoring of TCS-like pollutants in complex liquid matrices.

Abstract
Advancement of novel coating materials for solid-phase microextraction is highly needed for sample pretreatment. Herein, a triazine-based covalent organic polymer was constructed from the monomers of cyanuric chloride and trans-stilbene via the Friedel-Crafts reaction and thereafter used as a solid-phase microextraction fiber coating for the extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their nitrated and oxygenated derivatives. The newly-developed solid-phase microextraction method coupled with gas chromatography/flame ionization detection gives enhancement factors of 548-1236 and limits of detection of 0.40-2.81 ng/L for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives. The one fiber precision for five replicate determinations of the analytes and the fiber-to-fiber precision with three parallel prepared fibers, expressed as relative standard deviations, was in the range of 4.6-9.4% and 6.2-10.9%, respectively. The relative recoveries of the analytes for environmental water samples were in the range of 88.6-106.4% with the relative standard deviations ranging from 4.0 to 11.7% (n = 5).

Abstract
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in a multitude of important industrial products (e.g., medical devices, children's toys, and food packages), mainly as plasticizers to improve mechanical properties such as flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The wide occurrence of phthalates in many consumer products, including foods (e.g., bottled water, soft drinks, wine, milk, and meat) brings that most people are exposed to phthalates every day, which raises some concerns. Adverse health outcomes from phthalates exposure have been associated with endocrine disruption, deformities in the human reproductive system, increased risk of preterm birth, carcinogen exposure, among others. Apprehension related to the health risks and ubiquitous incidence of phthalates in foods inspires the development of reliable analytical approaches that allow their detection and quantification at trace levels. The purpose of the current review is to provide information related to the presence of phthalates in the food chain, highlighting the health risks associated with their exposure. Moreover, an overview of emerging extraction procedures and high-resolution analytical approaches for a comprehensive quantification of phthalates is presented.

Abstract
To improve extraction performance of carbon fibers (CFs) towards phthalate esters (PAEs), titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanorods array was in-situ grown on the surface of CFs, then polyaniline (PANI) was used to modify it. PANI/TiO2 nanorods-CFs were placed into a polyetheretherketone tube for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Combining the tube to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), it was evaluated and displayed good extraction performance for several PAEs. Compared with bare CFs, TiO2 nanorods and PANI, PANI/TiO2 nanorods presented best performance, attributed to the unique advantages between high surface area of TiO2 nanorods and multiple adsorption interactions (like π-π stacking, hydrogen bond) of PANI. After the optimization of the important factors (sampling volume, sampling rate, sample pH, concentrations of organic solvent and salt in sample, and desorption time), the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method was established. It provided low limits of detection (0.01-0.05 μg L-1) and wide linear ranges (0.03-30, 0.10-30, 0.17-30 μg L-1) with correlation coefficients larger than 0.9991. The relative standard deviations (n=6) between intra-day and inter-day tests were in the ranges of 3.5-10.3% and 4.7-13.9%, respectively. The method was successfully used to determine seven PAEs in real water samples. Besides of satisfactory durability, the material also exhibited superior extraction performance than some materials.

Abstract
Design and synthesis of novel coatings for solid phase microextraction (SPME) is urgently needed for sample pretreatment. In this study, three hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) were constructed by the facile Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions between tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)benzene (BCMB), 4,4'-bis(chloromethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (BCMBP), and cyanuric chloride (CC), respectively. The newly-synthesized HCPs were employed as SPME coatings for the extraction of phthalate esters (PAEs). Various parameters influencing the SPME efficiencies, including extraction time and temperature, ionic strength, stirring rate, desorption temperature and time were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, low limits of detection (0.003-0.033 μg L - 1), wide linearity (0.01-10 μg L - 1) and good repeatability (4.1-9.3%) were achieved. The HCPs-based SPME method was successfully applied for the determination of eight PAEs in environmental water and bottled water samples with recoveries from 75.3% to 116%. This method provides a good alternative for monitoring trace level of PAEs in water samples.

Abstract
Herein, an electrospun polyacrylonitrile/nickel-based metal-organic framework nanocomposite (PAN/Ni-MOF) coating on a stainless steel wire was synthesized and employed as a novel nanosorbent for headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs), diazinon (DIZ), and chlorpyrifos (CPS) from the diverse aqueous media followed by corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry (CD-IMS). Under the optimum experimental conditions, the calibration plots were linear in the range of 1.0-250.0 ng mL-1 for DIZ and 0.5-300.0 ng mL-1 for CPS with r2 > 0.999. The detection limits (S/N = 3) were 0.3 and 0.2 ng mL-1 for DIZ and CPS, respectively. The intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs%) (n = 5) at the concentration levels of 20.0, 40.0, and 100.0 ng mL-1 were ≤ 5.2%. To investigate the extraction efficiency, PAN/Ni-MOF was employed to analyze various juice samples, including orange, apple, and grape juices, and in three water samples where it led to good recoveries ranged between 87% and 98%.

Abstract
To synthesize covalent organic framework (COF) via irreversible reactions is more challenging than by reversible ones. In this work, microwave-assisted synthesis is used to facilitate the nucleophilic substitution of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-pyridinecarbonitrile with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxy triphenylene. The dioxin-linked COF, named TH-COF, was efficiently synthesized with extraordinarily large surface area of 1254 m2 g-1. With its high crystallinity, excellent thermal and chemical stabilities, TH-COF is used as the coating for the solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) of perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs). The adsorptive mechanism was evaluated with adsorption isotherm and kinetic adsorption. Adsorption energies are calculated based on the density functional theory. Following SPME with TH-COF-coated fibers, PFASs were eluted using 1 mL of 0.6% trifluoroacetic acid/methanol and analyzed through the ultra-performance liquid chromatography equipped with triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS). When applied to spiked real water samples, this method demonstrates good linearity (0.01-1000 ng L-1) with R2 ≥ 0.9945. The TH-COF-SPME-UPLC-MS/MS technique provides low limits of detection (0.0020-0.0045 ng L-1), excellent precision (≤ 7.9%), and good fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (≤ 7.1%). The TH-COF-coated fibers can be reused at least 20 times without the loss of extraction performance. In addition, the relative recoveries from spiked real water samples are 89.5%-105%.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), known as the most widely used brominated flame retardant, have received great public concern due to its hidden environment and health problems. Development of highly selective and sensitive analytical approaches for enrichment and detection of ultratrace PBDEs are in high demand. Conventional sample pretreatment techniques usually require tedious procedures, long time, and excessive consumption of solvent and sample, thus hindering ultrasensitive detection of PBDEs. To address this issue, we first reported a simple room-temperature approach for synthesis of tubular magnetic fluorinated covalent organic frameworks (MCNT@TAPB-TFTA). The introduction of fluorine atoms played multiple roles in improving the frameworks' hydrophobicity and the adsorption capabilities for PBDEs. Combined with atmospheric pressure gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS), several crucial parameters of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) including adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, pH, ion strength, the eluent, elution time and elution frequencies were examined in detail. The optimal method exhibited wide linear ranges (0.01-500 ng/L), low limit of detections (LODs, 0.0045-0.018 ng/L), good correlation coefficients (r ≥ 0.9977), and high enrichment factors (EFs, 1425-1886 folds) for eight PBDEs. Furthermore, this proposed method could be successfully applied to sensitive determination of ultratrace PBDEs in environmental samples, demonstrating the promising potential of the MCNT@TPAB-TFTA as an adsorbent in sample pretreatment.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a rapidly developing class of materials that has been of immense research interest during the last ten years. Numerous reviews have been devoted to summarizing the synthesis and applications of COFs. However, the underlying dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC), which is the foundation of COFs synthesis, has never been systematically reviewed in this context. Dynamic covalent chemistry is the practice of using thermodynamic equilibriums to molecular assemblies. This Critical Review will cover the state-of-the-art use of DCC to both synthesize COFs and expand the applications of COFs. Five synthetic strategies for COF synthesis are rationalized, namely: modulation, mixed linker/linkage, sub-stoichiometric reaction, framework isomerism, and linker exchange, which highlight the dynamic covalent chemistry to regulate the growth and to modify the properties of COFs. Furthermore, the challenges in these approaches and potential future perspectives in the field of COF chemistry are also provided.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be classified as emerging porous crystalline polymers with extremely high porosity and surface area size, and good thermal stability. These properties have awakened the interests of many areas, opening new horizons of research and applications. In the Analytical Chemistry field, COFs have found an important application in sample preparation approaches since their inherent properties clearly match, in a good number of cases, with the ideal characteristics of any extraction or clean-up sorbent. The review article is meant to provide a detailed overview of the different COFs that have been used up to now for sample preparation (i.e., solid-phase extraction in its most relevant operational modes-conventional, dispersive, magnetic/solid-phase microextraction and stir-bar sorptive extraction); the extraction devices/formats in which they have been applied; and their performances and suitability for this task.

Abstract
In the present research, a procedure was described for the recovery of rosmarinic acid (RA) from medical extract samples using chitosan‑zinc oxide nanoparticles as a biocompatible nanocomposite (CS-ZnO-NC). The dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) of RA from the medical extract samples was investigated by using the prepared biocompatible composite as a solid phase. The HPLC-UV method was used for measuring the extracted RA. The important variables (pH, biocompatible composite mass, contact time, and volume of eluent) associated with the extraction process were analyzed by the application of central composite design (CCD). The achieved optimum values for the mentioned variables were 7.0, 10 mg, 4 min, and 180 μL, respectively. The extraction recovery (99.68%) obtained from the predicted model was in agreement with the experimental data (98.22 ± 1.33%). In addition, under the obtained optimum conditions and over the concentration in the range of 2-3500 ng mL-1, a linear calibration curve was obtained with R2 > 0.993. The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) values were computed, and the obtained ranges were respectively from 0.060 to 0.089 ng mL-1 and 0.201 to 0.297 ng mL-1. In addition, the enrichment factors were obtained in the range of 93.7-110.5 with preconcentration factor of 83.3. Therefore, the D-μ-SPE-HPLC-UV method could be used for analyzing RA in the samples of the extracts obtained from the medical plants and water with the recovery values of the analyte in the range of 96.6%-105.4% and the precision with relative standard deviation <5.7%.

Abstract
A method for the simultaneous determination of 17 kinds of phthalate esters in capsanthin was developed by the QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, ruggedand safe) pretreatment method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). Capsanthin samples were extracted with acetonitrile, and then sodium chloride and anhydrous magnesium sulfate were added for salting out. After the extracting liquids were cleansed by florisil, the supernatants were analyzed by GC-MS. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 μg/g and 0.6 to 1.5 μg/g, respectively. DMP, DEP, DAP, DIBP, DBP, BMPP, DPP, DHXP and DCHP were in the range of 0.2 - 10 μg/g; DMEP, DEEP, BBP, DBEP, DEHP, DPhP, DNOP and DNP were in the range of 0.5 - 20 μg/g. And all had good linearity and the linear correlation coefficients (R2) were more than 0.995. The average recoveries of 17 kinds of PAEs of the three levels were between 82.8 and 118.1%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were between 0.12 and 7.3%. It is a simple, rapid, accurate and reliable method for the rapid detection of PAEs in large quantities of natural plant extract samples.

Abstract
In this study, three batches of nano-titania functionalized covalent organic frameworks were acquired depending on different solvothermal reaction stages (24 h, 48 h and 72 h), which were named as single roll-up shaped nano-titania functionalized COFs (SSTF-COFs), double roll-up shaped nano-titania functionalized COFs (DSTF-COFs) and clover-shaped nano-titania functionalized covalent organic framework (CSTF-COFs), respectively. After comparing their extraction performances, the more efficient and stable CSTF-COFs were selected as sorbent for the dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) of eight target N-nitrosamines in drinking water, followed by the determination with liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Owing to the introduction of hydroxy groups, CSTF-COFs showed high extraction efficiency for N-nitrosamines with a wide range of polarities through hydrogen bonding interaction, hydrophobic interaction and hydrophilic interaction. Under optimum conditions, the developed method provided relatively low limits of detection (0.13-2.45 ng/L) and satisfactory recoveries (88.6-105.5%), with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 8.3%. Therefore, with the assistance of CSTF-COFs, trace levels of N-nitrosamines were quantitatively and sensitively determined in 31 out of 460 bottled drinking water samples in a sensitive and convenient way.

Abstract
A porous aromatic framework (PAF) derived from triphenylamine (type PAF-41) was prepared and is shown to be a viable coating for fibrous solid-phase microextraction (SPME). PAF-41 can be easily synthesized and has a high surface area, a rich π-electron structure, and electron-rich nitrogen atoms in its framework. The PAF-41-coated fibrous SPME extractor was combined with a gas chromatographic separation and flame ionization detection. The method was applied to the quantitation of some aromatic organic compounds (AOCs), including polar amphetamine and methamphetamine and nonpolar ethylbenzene, o-, m- and p-xylenes, and styrene. The method was optimized after which a linear response is found for the 10-500 ng·mL-1 amphetamine and methamphetamine concentration ranges. The limits of detection are 1.0 and 0.5 ng·mL-1; and relative standard deviations for six repeated extractions with a single fiber are 5.3 and 6.7%. The method was applied for the determination of amphetamine and methamphetamine in spiked urine samples without any pretreatment except for dilution with water. The PAF-41 modified fiber also was applied to the extraction of styrene, xylenes and ethylbenzene. The enrichment capacities of the extractor for these AOCs were superior to those of commercial SPME extractors.
