Development of a hydrophilic magnetic amino-functionalized metal-organic framework for the highly efficient enrichment of trace bisphenols in river water samples

Self-assembled flower-like carbon nanosheets for magnetic solid-phase extraction of microcystins from aquatic organism

Adsorbents with good dispersibility and high efficiency are crucial for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). In this study, flower-like magnetic nanomaterials (F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C) were successfully prepared by calcination of metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors that was stacked by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet. The synthesized F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C has a flower-like layered structure with a large amount of pore space, promoting the rapid diffusion of targets. In addition, Zn2+ doped in MOF precursors was still retained that further produced strong metal chelation with targets. The unique structure of F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C was used as MSPE adsorbent, and combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) for extraction of three microcystins (MCs) detection, including microcystin-LR (MC-LR), microcystin-RR (MC-RR), microcystin-YR (MC-YR). The resulting method has a detection limit of 0.2-1.0 pg mL-1, a linear dynamic range of 0.6-500.0 pg mL-1 and has good linearity (R ≥ 0.9996). Finally, the established method was applied to the highly selective enrichment of MCs in biological samples, successfully detecting trace amounts of MCs (8.4-15.0 pg mL-1) with satisfactory recovery rates (83.7-103.1 %). The results indicated that flower-like magnetic F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C was a promising adsorbent, providing great potential for the determination of trace amounts of MCs in biological samples.

Dispersive solid-phase extraction based on zirconium metal-organic framework coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for determining sugar phosphates in biological samples

BACKGROUND

Sugar phosphates (SPx) play important role in the metabolism of the organism. SPx such as glycerate 3-phosphate, fructose 6-phosphate and glucose 6-phosphate in biological samples have the poor stability, similar structure and low abundance, which make their separation and detection more challenging.

METHOD

UiO-66-NH2 and ZrO2 coated SiO2(SBA-15) hard-core-shell adsorbents (UiO-66-NH2@SBA-15 and ZrO2@SBA-15) were synthesized, which were further used for dispersive solid-phase extraction for enriching the SPx in biological samples. The protocol was developed by UiO-66-NH2@SBA-15 and ZrO2@SBA-15 coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the detection of trace SPx. The univariate experiment and response surface methodology were used to optimize the adsorption and desorption conditions.

RESULTS

The adsorbents showed excellent adsorption capacity and specificity towards SPx, which were proved by adsorption and selective experiments. Under the optimized conditions, there were good linearity within the range of 5.0-5000.0 ng mL-1, low limits of detection (0.001-1.0 ng mL-1), low limits of quantification (0.005-5.0 ng mL-1) and good precision (relative standard deviation less than 14.7 % for intra-day and inter-day). The satisfactory recoveries (89.1-113.8 %) and precision (0.5-14.6 %) were obtained when the sorbents were used to extract SPx from serum, saliva and cell samples. Moreover, UiO-66-NH2@SBA-15 was applied to the quantitative analysis of SPx from gastric cancer patients, because of a higher adsorption capacity (169.5-196.1 mg g-1).

CONCLUSIONS

UiO-66-NH2@SBA-15 showed great potential in the extraction of SPx in biological samples, which was beneficial to find out the metabolic change of SPx and explain the pathogenesis of the disease.

Assessment of the application of selected metal-organic frameworks as advanced sorbents in passive extraction used in the monitoring of contaminants of emerging concern in surface waters

Water pollution has become a critical global concern requiring effective monitoring techniques and robust protection strategies. Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are increasingly detected in various water sources, with their harmful effects on humans and ecosystems continually evolving. Based on literature reports highlighting the promising sorption properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) and UiO-66 (Ce) as sorbents in passive sampling devices (MOFs-PSDs) for the collection and extraction of a wide group of CECs. Solvothermal methods were used to synthesize MOFs, and the characterization of the obtained materials was performed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), powder X-ray diffractometry (pXRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The research demonstrated the sorption capabilities of the tested MOFs, the ease and rapidity of their chemical regeneration and the possibility of reuse as sorbents. Using chemometric analysis, the structural properties of CECs determining the sorption efficiency on the surface of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) were identified. The MOFs-PSDs were lab-calibrated to examine the kinetics of analytes sorption and determine the sampling rates (Rs). MOFs-PSDs and CNTs-PSDs (PSDs containing carbon nanotubes as a sorbent) were then placed in the Elbląg River and the Vistula Lagoon to sampling and extraction of the target compounds from the water. CNTs-PSDs were selected, based on our previous research, for the comparison of the effectiveness of the MOFs-PSDs in environmental monitoring. MOFs-PSDs were successfully used in monitoring of CECs in water. The time-weighted average concentrations (CTWA) of 2-hydroxycarbamazepine, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, p-nitrophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and caffeine were determined in the Elbląg River and CTWA of metoprolol, diclofenac, 2-hydroxycarbamazepine, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, p-nitrophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and caffeine were determine in the Vistula Lagoon using MOFs-PSDs and a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometer.

β-Cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic polyamine-amine dendrimers for high enrichment and effective analysis of trace bisphenolic pollutants in beverages

Bisphenols (BPs) are typical endocrine disruptors, which can cause great effects on environmental, organisms and human health. In this study, β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized polyamidoamine dendrimers-modified Fe₃O₄ nanomaterials (MNPs@PAMAM (G3.0)@β-CD) were facilely synthesized. It exhibited good adsorption capacities for BPs, which was utilized to construct a sensitive tool in combination with high performance liquid chromatography for monitoring BPs such as bisphenol A (BPA), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol AF (BPAF) and bisphenol AP (BPAP) in beverage samples. The factors affecting the enrichment were examined such as generation of adsorbent, dosage of adsorbent, type and volume of eluting solvent, elution time and pH value of sample solution. The optimal parameters for enrichment was as follows: dosage of adsorbent, 60 mg; adsorption time, 50min; sample pH, pH7; elutent, 9 mL mixture of methanol and acetone(1:1); elution time, 6min; sample volume, 60 mL. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed the maximum adsorption capacities of BPS, TBBPA, BPA, BPAF and BPAP were 131.80 μgg^-1, 139.84 μgg^-1, 157.08 μgg^-1, 142.11 μgg^-1 and 134.23 μgg^-1, respectively. Under optimal conditions, BPS had good linear relationship over range from of 0.5-300 μgL^-1, and the linear ranges of BPA, TBBPA, BPAF and BPAP ranged from 0.1 to 300 μgL^-1. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) for BPs were good in range of 0.016-0.039 μgL^-1. The spiked recoveries of target bisphenols (BPs) in beverages were approving over range from 92.3% to 99.2%. The established method possessed merits of easy to operate, good sensitivity, rapidness as well as environmental friendliness, and which earned great application potential for the enrichment and detection of trace BPs in practical samples.

Solvent-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of bisphenols using iron(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate complex (Fe(TTA)3) as a new nanostructured sorbent: a proof of concept

In this work, we describe for the first time the use of iron(III) thenoyltrifluoroacetonate complex (Fe(TTA)₃) as a novel sorbent for solvent-assisted dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (SA-dμSPE) of bisphenols from water samples. The extraction procedure is based on the formation of nanoparticles in situ following the rapid injection of a methanolic solution of Fe(TTA)₃ into the stirred aqueous sample. Herein, the synthesis of Fe(TTA)₃ and study of the essential parameters of the preparative procedure are described. The optimized procedure allowed for efficient enrichment of bisphenols from various water samples, chosen as model contaminants and matrix, within 2.5 min. The sorbent was collected by centrifugation, dissolved in methanol, and injected to perform HPLC with spectrophotometric detection. The limits of detection and quantification obtained ranged from 1.0-3.1 and 3.1-7.5 μg L^-1, respectively. Intraday and interday precisions of <7% relative standard deviation (RSD) and <8% RSD with analyte recoveries ranging between 70-117% (103.8% on average) were obtained for the analysis of river water, wastewater treatment plant effluent, and bottled water.

Highly efficient and simultaneous magnetic solid phase extraction of heavy metal ions from water samples with l-Cysteine modified magnetic polyamidoamine dendrimers prior to high performance liquid chromatography

Due to the strong metal-sulfur interaction between mercapto groups and metal ions, which can be used to functionalize polyamidoamine dendrimer decorated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles for high enrichment of trace heavy metal ions from waters. Based on this concept, polyamidoamine dendrimer modified Fe₃O₄ nanomaterials were functionalized with l-Cysteine and a new magnetic solid phase extraction for rapid adsorption and separation of Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, Co²⁺ and Cd²⁺ from waters was established. The factors affecting extraction efficiency have been optimized. Upon the optimal parameters, the established method provided good linear ranges of 0.1-200 μg L^-1 for Hg²⁺ and 0.05-200 μg L^-1 for Pb²⁺, Co²⁺ and Cd²⁺, and high sensitivity with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.018 μg L^-1, 0.014 μg L^-1, 0.013 μg L^-1 and 0.025 μg L^-1 for Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Co²⁺ and Hg²⁺, respectively. Real water samples were utilized to validate the proposed method, and achieved results revealed that the proposed method was sensitive, effective, stable and suitable for monitoring Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺and Hg²⁺ in environmental waters. This work provided a novel strategy for the simultaneous analysis of target cations in waters, and a new direction for developing decoration method of nanomaterials according to specific purpose.

Simultaneous determination of phthalates and bisphenols from plastic bottled water samples by dispersive solid-phase extraction with multiwalled carbon nanotubes and liquid chromatography/atmospheric pressure photoionization/high-resolution mass spectrometry

RATIONALE

Phthalates and bisphenols were reported as endocrine disrupting chemicals and hence a potential threat to human health. Polyethylene terephthalate bottles are being used to store drinking water and the probability of migration of phthalates and bisphenols from the bottles into the water is high. The migration of analytes with respect to different storage conditions need to be studied.

METHOD

A sensitive analytical method for simultaneous determination of seven phthalates and three bisphenols from packaged drinking water was developed using liquid chromatography/atmospheric pressure photoionization/high-resolution mass spectrometry. The analytes were extracted by dispersive solid-phase extraction by multiwalled carbon nanotubes.

RESULTS

The developed method showed linearity from 0.5 to 5000 μg/L with the limit of detection and limit of quantification ranging from 0.5 to 1 μg/L and 1 to 2 μg/L, respectively, for phthalates and bisphenols. The inter- and intraday variations were below 10%. The recoveries were in the range of 79.5% to 112%. The migration of phthalates and bisphenols increased with storage time and temperature. Maximum migration was observed for diisobutyl phthalate of 1209.7 ng/L followed by dibutyl phthalate at 777.8 ng/L on 180 days of analysis at room temperature. Migration of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate was observed to be higher at elevated temperatures, increasing from 14.9 to 514 ng/L. Similarly, migration of bisphenol-A was increased at 45°C. The results were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) studies and the results showed significant variations of phthalates and bisphenols with respect to storage temperature and time.

CONCLUSION

The use of atmospheric pressure photoionization facilitated simultaneous determination of phthalates and bisphenols. The migration of phthalates and bisphenols increased with increasing temperature and storage time. Maximum migration was observed for diethyl, diisobutyl, dibutyl and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalates. This may be attributed to the type of plastic, the processing parameters and recycling.

Facile synthesis disposable MOF membrane filter: Growth of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) on filter paper for fast removal of organophosphorus pesticides in aqueous solution and vegetables

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential to remove pesticide residues. However, the lack of affinity between the materials and target and the process of trivial sample preparation resulted in limited removal efficiency. Here, we report a one-pot method for the fast preparation of NH₂-MIL-125 (Ti)-based filter paper to synthesise NH₂-MIL-125 (Ti)-based filter paper membranes. The NH₂-MIL-125 (Ti)-based filter paper membrane takes advantage of π-π interactions between the organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) and the benzene ring of MOFs. The affinity of amino groups and metal Ti for phosphorus atoms in the OPPs exhibits rapid removal efficiency for three OPPs, imidan, fenthion, and fenitrothion. The isothermal adsorption results for imidan, fenthion, and fenitrothion were consistent with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Langmuir models, respectively. The kinetic results for imidan, fenthion, and fenitrothion agreed with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the removal efficiency reached equilibrium within 1 min. There was no significant change in the adsorption capacity of OPPs in different pH solutions (pH = 2-10). Compared with that of MOFs, the NH₂-MIL-125 (Ti)-based filter paper membrane removal efficiency of OPPs is the same, and it also has better removal efficiency in actual spinach samples. As a result, the sample pretreatment procedure was simplified using a low-cost and simple-to-synthesize disposable NH₂-MIL-125 (Ti)-based filter paper membrane, samples' quick separation and the simultaneous fast removal of OPPs.

Migration study of phenolic endocrine disruptors from pacifiers to saliva simulant by solid phase microextraction with amino-functionalized microporous organic network coated fiber

Parabens, bisphenols, and triclosan are used in many baby products, including pacifiers. However, the migration through oral saliva will result in a potential health risk. The present study proposes a sensitive and simple method for the analysis of these chemicals in saliva simulants by solid phase microextraction (SPME) with amino-functionalized microporous organic network (MON-NH₂) coated fiber. The MON-NH₂ showed an excellent adsorption ability for phenolic compounds. The adsorption isotherm fitted the Langmuir isotherm model and the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo second-order model. The developed SPME method exhibited wide linear ranges (0.005-500 µg/L), good linearity, low limits of quantitation (0.005 µg/L), great recoveries (87.0-112.5 %), and excellent precision (RSD < 8.3 % for intra-day and RSD < 13.7 % for inter-day). Mathematical models based on Fick's second law were applied to predict migration from pacifiers into saliva simulants and a good fit between theoretical and experimental migration results was found. The daily exposure assessment results indicated that these chemicals in pacifiers do not pose unacceptable health risks to infants. However, exposure risks still should be monitored and appropriate precautions are still needed to protect infants from exposure to these chemicals.

Hollow fiber membrane-protected amino/hydroxyl bifunctional microporous organic network fiber for solid-phase microextraction of bisphenols A, F, S, and triclosan in breast milk and infant formula

Bisphenols and triclosan have been used in various products, and exposure to these chemicals may affect human health. The present study proposes a sensitive method for the determination of bisphenols A, F, S, and triclosan. The fiber was coated by amino/hydroxyl bifunctional microporous organic network and protected by polyvinylidene fluoride hollow fiber membrane for direct immersion solid phase microextraction. The limit of detection was 0.005 μg/L (μg/kg), and the recoveries were in the range of 76.7% to 107.5% (87.4% to 107.6%) for breast milk (infant formula), with intra-day and inter-day precisions <10.5% (7.3%) and 13.6% (8.4%), respectively. Fiber-to-fiber reproducibility of < 9.5% and a lifespan of >100 cycles were obtained. The 95th percentile estimated daily intake of total bisphenols was close to temporary tolerable daily intake for infants fed by human milk, which highlighted the needs for further attention on human exposure to BPA and its substitutes.

Recent advances in magnetic composites as adsorbents for wastewater remediation

The scarcity of clean drinking water combined with other environmental and anthropogenic effects necessitates the demand for development of advanced technology for cleaning polluted water. Adsorption is one such technique that does not produce toxic byproducts and solves the problem of cleaning contaminated water at a lower cost. In recent years, magnetic composites, as adsorbent, have gained lot of attention due to their reusability which makes them sustainable and economical. This review article describes the challenges related to water quality, scarcity and then summarizes the current treatment technologies and advancement in the field of adsorption to resolve the prevailing concerns. The review includes an insight into the recent research being carried out in the field of magnetic composites and nanocomposites, as adsorbent, covering, probably, all aspects of what is going around the globe. Different materials, like polymers, biomaterials, clays and metal organic framework (MOF)-based magnetic composites and their applications in wastewater treatment processes have been included. The article is a comprehensive review on the application of different materials to detoxify various diverse pollutants with prime focus on magnetic composites. The thorough study of this review will surely bring upcoming researchers closer to the future possibilities of research in wastewater treatment.

Sensitive and direct electrochemical detection of bisphenol S based on 1T&2H-MoS2/CNTs-NH2 nanocomposites

A voltammetric sensor was constructed for ultra-trace BPS detection based on the signal amplification effect of 1T&2H-MoS2 and CNTs-NH2 composites.

Fabrication of stable multivariate metal-organic frameworks with excellent adsorption performance toward bisphenols from environmental samples

As a type of environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals, bisphenols (BPs) have a certain embryonic toxicity and teratogenicity, which can significantly increase the risks of breast cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia and other cancers. In this work, stable multivariate metal-organic frameworks (UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_x) were synthesized via in situ one-pot method and used as miniaturized dispersive solid-phase extraction (dμSPE) sorbents for extraction of trace BPs from environmental samples. The phase purity, crystal morphology and physical properties of UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_x samples were varied by adjusting the mass ratio of TCPP. The extraction performance of UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_x samples were investigated and UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_1.0 exhibited the highest adsorption efficiency. Besides, UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_1.0 possessed excellent recycling stability for the adsorption and desorption of BPs more than 20 cycles. The experimental parameters including amount of adsorbent, adsorption time, sample solution pH, temperature, desorption time and desorption solvents which affecting the efficiency of dμSPE were studied, respectively. Good linearity (R² > 0.9992) in range of 0.1-200 ng mL^-1 was obtained. The detection limits (S/N = 3) and quantification limits (S/N = 10) were achieved at 0.03-0.08 ng mL^-1 and 0.1-0.5 ng mL^-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intra-day and inter-day ranged from 2.5 to 5.5% and 1.1-6.8%. Enrichment factors were calculated in the range of 303-338. The obtained recoveries of bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol B (BPB) and bisphenol AF (BPAF) were 81.26-91.03% (RSDs = 0.96-6.47%), 82.2-97.27% (RSDs = 0.45-6.15%), 87.56-97.26% (RSDs = 1.1-6.22%) and 82.2-100.8% (RSDs = 0.46-4.07%). The UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_1.0 can be employed as potential dμSPE sorbents for the enrichment of trace BPs in the environmental samples.

Preparation of magnetic yolk-shell structured metal-organic framework material and its application in pharmacokinetics study of alkaloids

In this study, a magnetic yolk-shell structured metal-organic framework material (Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂) is prepared by the directional etching of Co²⁺/peroxymonosulfate and in situ magnetization. The characteristic properties of the material were investigated by using field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and contact angle test. The Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂ shows the advantages of large surface area, good magnetic property, and satisfactory stability, as well as giving high affinity to alkaloids (ALs) via hydrophilic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction. The results of static adsorption experiment indicate that the Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂ possesses high adsorption capacity towards ALs and the adsorption behaviors are fitted with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Furthermore, a magnetic solid-phase extraction using Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂ and HPLC method was developed for the analysis of ALs in spiked samples with the recovery of 89.6-100.8%. In addition, the proposed method was successfully applied in the pharmacokinetics study of berberine, coptisine, and palmatine in the rat. In short, the developed method might be used for high-efficient recognition and determination of ALs in plasma sample, which would also provide a new way to fabricate magnetic functionalized metal-organic framework in separation science.

Determination of quinolones in environmental water and fish by magnetic metal organic frameworks based magnetic solid-phase extraction followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

The widespread use of quinolones has become an increasing global public health threat. In this study, IRMOF-3 coated SiO₂/Fe₃O₄ were prepared via a facile room-temperature method. The prepared IRMOF-3 coated SiO₂/Fe₃O₄ was used as a sorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction, and then combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of 10 quinolines. The extraction conditions of magnetic solid phase extraction were studied in detail, and the optimal conditions were established. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the limits of quantification of 10 quinolones were in the range of 0.005-0.01 μg L^-1, the relative standard deviations were 6.58-10.6% (n=7), the enrichment factors were 21.0-23.8 for water samples. The limits of quantification of 10 quinolones were in the range of 0.10-0.20 μg kg^-1, the relative standard deviations were 5.95-14.5% (n=7), the enrichment factors were 1.08-1.24 for fish samples. The proposed method was applied for the determination of 10 quinolones in river water, aquacultural water and a fish sample, and enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were found in the fish sample.

Amino-based magneto-polymeric-modified mixed iron hydroxides for magnetic solid phase extraction of phenol residues in environmental samples

Mixed iron hydroxides (MIHs) modified with different amino-based polymeric materials, including aminopropyltriethoxysilane, polydopamine, diaminobenzoic acid, polyaniline, and polyphenylenediamine, were comparatively investigated as sorbents for the extraction of phenol compounds. Polyphenylenediamine-modified mixed iron hydroxides (MIH@PPDA) showed high adsorption capability for most target analytes. Its ferromagnetic behavior, with a magnetization of 17.38 emu g^-1, was sufficient for subsequent use in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The functional groups, morphology, and magnetic properties of this magnetic nanomaterial were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, and CHN analysis. High-performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector was used to quantify phenol compounds. The experimental parameters affecting the efficiency of the entire MSPE process were optimized. Good linearity in the range of 0.5-1000 µg L^-1 was obtained (depended on the compound). The detection and quantitation limits varied from 0.01 to 0.3 µg L^-1 and 0.03 to 0.9 µg L^-1, respectively. The enrichment factors for all phenol compounds were in the range of 80-285. The precision in terms of intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations were below 5.8% and 6.2%, respectively. The developed MSPE method was applied to analyze phenol compounds in diverse samples, including soil, drinking water, and fruit. Relative recoveries of 76.7-130.1% were obtained. The MIH@PPDA magneto-polymeric sorbent exhibits good stability and is reliable for a variety of phenol compounds.

Potential threats of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles to aquatic fungi associated with leaf decomposition

Synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) and evaluation of their potential threats on ecosystem functioning has been reported in this work. A 45-day indoor experiment was conducted to explore the effects of ZIF-8 NPs at three different concentrations (10, 100, and 1000 μg L^-1) on the aquatic fungal community associated with Populus nigra L. leaf litter decomposition. After chronic exposure, ZIF-8 NPs at 1000 μg L^-1 significantly inhibited fungal biomass and extracellular enzyme activities as a result of inhibition on carbon and nitrogen loss of leaves. Besides, ZIF-8 NPs at 10 μg L^-1 increased the percentage of Anguillospora in the fungal community and led Monographella cucumerina and Mycosphaerella tassiana to become the hub species, which eventually significantly promoted the decomposition of leaf litter. In conclusion, our study provides a reference for the possible ecotoxicity of ZIF-8 NPs on aquatic fungi, confirms the influence of ZIF-8 NPs on nutrient cycling in streams, and also emphasizes the importance of fungal community structure and hub species in the process of leaf litter decomposition.

Synthesis of Magnetic Metal-Organic Frame Material and Its Application in Food Sample Preparation

A variety of contaminants in food is an important aspect affecting food safety. Due to the presence of its trace amounts and the complexity of food matrix, it is very difficult to effectively separate and accurately detect them. The magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites with different structures and functions provide a new choice for the purification of food matrix and enrichment of trace targets, thus providing a new direction for the development of new technologies in food safety detection with high sensitivity and efficiency. The MOF materials composed of inorganic subunits and organic ligands have the advantages of regular pore structure, large specific surface area and good stability, which have been thoroughly studied in the pretreatment of complex food samples. MMOF materials combined different MOF materials with various magnetic nanoparticles, adding magnetic characteristics to the advantages of MOF materials, which are in terms of material selectivity, biocompatibility, easy operation and repeatability. Combined with solid phase extraction (SPE) technique, MMOF materials have been widely used in the food pretreatment. This article introduced the new preparation strategies of different MMOF materials, systematically summarizes their applications as SPE adsorbents in the pretreatment of food contaminants and analyzes and prospects their future application prospects and development directions.

Determination of bisphenol A: Old problem, recent creative solutions based on novel materials

Bisphenol A is a synthetic compound widely used in industry, in the production of polycarbonate, epoxy resins, and thermal paper, among others. Its annual production is estimated at millions of tons per year, demonstrating its importance. Despite its wide application in various everyday products, once in the environment (due to its disposal or leaching), it has high toxicity to humans and animal life, and this problem has been well known for years. Given this problem, many researchers seek alternatives for its monitoring in matrices such as natural water, waste, food, and biological matrices. For this, new advanced materials have been developed, characterized, and applied in creative ways for the preparation of samples for the determination of bisphenol A. This article aims to present some of these important and recent applications, describing the use of molecularly imprinted polymers, metal and covalent organic frameworks, ionic liquids and magnetic ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents as creative solutions in sample preparation for the long-standing problem of bisphenol A determination.
