Quercetin supplemented diet improves follicular development, oocyte quality, and reduces ovarian apoptosis in rabbits during summer heat stress

In Vivo Imaging of Rabbit Follicles through Combining Ultrasound Bio-Microscopy and Intravital Window

Continuous ovarian imaging has been proven to be a method for monitoring the development of follicles in vivo. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of combining ultrasound bio-microscopy (UBM) with an intravital window for follicle imaging in rabbits and to monitor the ovarian dynamic processes. New Zealand White female rabbits (n = 10) received ovarian translocation to a subcutaneous position. The ovarian tissue was sutured onto the abdominal muscles and covered with an intravital window for the continuous monitoring of the follicles using UBM. Results show that physiological changes (red blood cell and white blood cell counts, feed intake, and body weight change) in rabbits induced by surgery returned to normal physiological levels in one week. Furthermore, UBM could provide high-resolution imaging of follicles through the intravital window. Daily monitoring of ovarian dynamic processes for 6 days displayed variabilities in follicle counts and size. Collectively, these results provide a relatively new method to monitor ovarian dynamic processes and to understand the reproductive physiology of female rabbits.

Effect of quercetin on granulosa cells development from hierarchical follicles in chicken

1. The bioflavonoid quercetin is a biologically active component, but its functional regulation of granulosa cells (GCs) during chicken follicular development is little studied. To investigate the effect of quercetin on follicular development in laying hens, an in vitro study was conducted on granulosa cells from hierarchical follicles treated with quercetin.2. The effect of quercetin on cell activity, proliferation and apoptosis of granulosa cells was detected by CCK-8, EdU and apoptosis assays. The effect on progesterone secretion from granulosa cells was investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) mRNA and oestrogen receptors (ERs), as well as the expression of steroid acute regulatory protein (StAR), cytochrome P450 cholesterol side chain cleavage enzyme (P450scc) and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) mRNA during progesterone synthesis, were measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). PCNA, StAR and CYP11A1 protein expression levels were detected using Western blotting (WB).3. The results showed that treatment with quercetin in granulosa cells significantly enhanced cell vitality and proliferation, reduced apoptosis and promoted the expression of gene and protein levels of PCNA. The levels of progesterone secretion increased significantly following quercetin treatment, as did the expression levels of StAR and CYP11A1 using the Western Blot (WB) method.4. The mRNA expression levels of ERα were significantly upregulated in the 100 ng/ml and 1000 ng/ml quercetin-treated groups, while there was no significant difference in expression levels of ERβ mRNA.

Quercetin induces its chemoprotective effects via hormesis

Quercetin is a polyphenol present in numerous fruits and vegetables and therefore widely consumed by humans with average daily dietary intakes of 10-20 mg/day. It is also a popular dietary supplement of 250-1000 mg/day. However, despite the widespread consumer interest in quercetin, due to its possible chemopreventive properties, the extensively studied quercetin presents a highly diverse and complex array of biological effects. Consequently, the present paper provides the first assessment of quercetin-induced hormetic concentration/dose responses, their quantitative features and mechanistic foundations, and their biological, biomedical, clinical, and public health implications. The findings indicate that quercetin-induced hormetic dose responses are widespread, being independent of biological model, cell type, and endpoint. These findings have the potential to enlighten future experimental studies with quercetin especially with respect to study design parameters and may also affect the appraisal of possible public health benefits and risks associated with highly diverse consumer consumption practices.

Influence of phenolic flavonols (Kaempferol, Querectin and Myricetin) on the survival and growth of ovine preantral follicles and granulosa cells cultured in vitro

Study was carried out to examine the influence of plant bioactive compounds [Kaempferol (KAE), Querectin (QUE) and Myricetin (MYR)] on the survival and growth parameters of cultured ovine preantral follicles (PFs) granulosa cells (GCs) and expression of some key developmental genes. Ovine PFs were isolated from slaughterhouse derived ovaries and KAE, QUE and MYR were supplemented to the standard culture medium of GCs and PFs at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μM and cultured for 5 and 7 days respectively. PFs morphological and functional parameters [follicle and enclosed oocyte growth rate, viability of follicles, antrum formation rate, oocyte maturation rate, estradiol concentration, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production] and GC growth parameters (metabolic activity, viability rate, cell number increment, ROS production) were measured after culture. Significantly higher PF growth, viability rate and estradiol concentration was observed at 10 μM, 25 μM and 10 μM concentration of KAE, MYR and QUE respectively compared to the control. ROS production was significantly decreased in the PF culture media treated with 10 μM KAE or MYR 25 μM or 10 μM QUE compared to those observed in the control group. Likewise, metabolic activity of GCs, viability rate and cell number increment cultured with KAE, MYR and QUE was significantly higher at 10, 25 and 10 μM concentrations respectively compared to those observed in control group. ROS production was significantly lower in the GC cultured with KAE, MYR and QUE at 10, 25 and 10 μM concentrations respectively compared to the control. Based on the results of the growth parameters, gene expression of PFs and GCs were studied by qPCR at selected concentrations (KAE, MYR and QUE at 10, 25 and 10 μM concentrations respectively) in the cultured PFs and GCs. Gene expression of GDF9, FGF2, CYP19A1 was significantly higher and Bax, Bcl2 expression was significantly lower in the PFs and GCs cultured with the KAE or QUE at 10 μM concentration. KAE, MYR and QUE have dose dependant responses on PFs and GCs morphological and functional parameters; however, KAE is more potent amongst the three in augmenting the ovarian functions.

Ameliorating Effect of Sodium Selenite on Developmental and Molecular Response of Bovine Cumulus-Oocyte Complexes Matured in Vitro Under Heat Stress Condition

Selenium (Se), an essential trace element, plays an important role in the antioxidative defense mechanism, and it has been proven to improve fertility and reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle. The present study evaluated the potential protective action of Se supplement of in vitro maturation (IVM) media on the maturation and subsequent development of bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) exposed to heat stress (HS). The treatment with Se improved the viability of cumulus cells (CCs) and oocytes (P < 0.05). The proportion of oocytes reached metaphase II (MII) and those arrested at metaphase I (MI) was greater and lower in treatment than control respectively (P < 0.05). Supplementation with Se increased the percentage of cleaved embryos, total blastocysts, and blastocyst/cleavage ratio (P < 0.05). Moreover, the upregulation of CCND1, SEPP1, GPX-4, SOD, CAT, and downregulation of GRP78, CHOP, and BAX in both Se-treated CCs and oocytes were recorded. The upregulation of NRF2 was detected in Se-treated CCs other than in oocytes, which showed upregulation of IGF2R and SOX-2 as the markers of quality as well. Se supplement in IVM media improved the viability, maturation, and the level of transcripts related to antioxidant defense and quality of heat-treated oocytes, which coincided with greater subsequent development outcomes. Se ameliorated the viability of CCs along with upregulation of antioxidative candidate gene expression and downregulation of apoptosis-related ones to support their protective role on restoring the quality of oocytes against compromising effects of HS.

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) and its constituent quercetin can suppress ovarian cell functions and their response to FSH

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis Brum. f) can directly influence female reproduction, but whether rooibos can influence the response of ovarian cells to FSH and whether the rooibos effects are due to the presence of quercetin remain unknown. We compared the influence of rooibos extract and quercetin (both at 10 µg/ml-1) on porcine ovarian granulosa cells cultured with and without FSH (0, 1, 10 or 100 ng/ml-1). The expression of intracellular proliferation (PCNA, cyclin B1) and apoptosis (bax, caspase 3) markers in the cells was detected by immunocytochemistry. The release of progesterone (P), testosterone (T) and estradiol (E) were evaluated with ELISAs. Administration of both rooibos and quercetin reduced the accumulation of proliferation markers and promoted the accumulation of apoptosis markers and the release of T and E. Rooibos stimulated, but quercetin inhibited, P output. Administration of FSH increased the accumulation of proliferation markers, decreased the accumulation of apoptosis markers, promoted the release of P and T, and had a biphasic effect on E output. The addition of both rooibos and quercetin mitigated or prevented the main effects of FSH. The present observations suggest a direct influence of both rooibos and quercetin on basic ovarian functions - proliferation, apoptosis, steroidogenesis and response to FSH. The similarity in the major effects of rooibos and its constituent quercetin indicates that quercetin could be the molecule responsible for the main rooibos effects on the ovary. The potential anti-reproductive effects of rooibos and rooibos constituent quercetin, should be taken into account in animal and human nutrition.

Effects of quercetin on granulosa cells from prehierarchical follicles by modulating MAPK signaling pathway in chicken

Quercetin (Que), widely found in a huge variety of plants, plays important roles in ovarian function. However, to data, there have been no reports about Que regulating granulosa cells (GCs) in prehierarchical follicles in chicken. Herein, GCs from follicles diameter from 4 to 8 mm in chicken were treated by Que in vitro culture to investigate how Que exerts its effect on follicular development. GCs treated by Que in concentrations of 10, 100, and 1,000 ng/mL were tested for cell proliferation and progesterone secretion. Eight cDNA libraries were constructed from GCs (4 samples per group) to explore transcriptome expression changes. The role of the MAPK/ERK signaling pathway was validated in this process. Treatment with 100 and 1,000 ng/mL levels of Que significantly promoted cell proliferation and progesterone secretion (P < 0.05). RNA-seq analysis data showed that 402 and 263 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were up- and down-regulated, respectively. Functional enrichment analysis that the pathways related to follicular development included biosynthesis of amino acids, MAPK signaling pathway, and calcium signaling pathway. Notably, the function exerted in GCs of the different levels of Que was associated with the suppression of the MAPK pathway. In conclusion, our results proved that low levels of Que could promote MAPK signaling pathway, but high levels of Que inhibit MAPK signaling pathway in GCs from the prehierarchical follicles, promote cell proliferation and progesterone secretion, and benefit follicle selection.

Quercetin protects mouse oocytes against chromium-induced damage in vitro and in vivo

BACKGROUND

Chromium (Cr) is a naturally-occurring element that is used in various fields of industry. Humans may be exposed to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], which is one of the stable valence states of the chromium through contaminated soil, air, and water. Exposure to Cr(VI) through contaminated drinking water, soil and air causes various cancers and also fertility problems in animals and humans. Quercetin (QCT), a common flavonoid compound, has numerous biological effects as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger, but its function and mechanisms in reproductive processes in various species remain unclear. This study aims to determine the chromium effects on mice oocyte quality and the ameliorative effect of QCT in both in vitro and in vivo experimental models.

METHODS

For the in vitro experiment, oocytes were collected and divided into the control, sham, QCT-treated, Cr(VI) (potassium dichromate), and treatment [Cr(VI)+QCT] groups. Collected oocytes were cultured in maturation medium with or without 10 µM quercetin and 10 µM Cr(VI) for 14 h based on the defined experimental design. For the in vivo experiment, the mice were randomly divided into the control, sham, QCT-treated, Cr(VI), and Cr(VI) + QCT groups. Control and sham mice received regular drinking water and diet. Cr(VI) group received Cr(VI) (50 ppm in drinking water) and Cr(VI) + QCT group received 50 ppm Cr(VI) with QCT (20 mg/kg body wt, through i.p) for a period of 21 days and then oocytes were collected and cultured for 14 h for in vitro maturation. For both experiments, at the end of the culture period, we examined the ameliorative effect of QCT on oocyte maturation, spindle formation, ROS production, mitochondrial function, and apoptosis.

RESULTS

Our in vitro and in vivo results showed that Cr(VI) disrupt the oocyte maturation and spindle formation (P < 0.001). Furthermore, we found that exposure to Cr(VI) significantly increased ROS levels and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (P < 0.001). In addition, exposure to Cr(VI) induced early apoptosis and downregulated the Bcl-2 mRNA expression and upregulated the Caspase-3 and Bax mRNAs expression (P < 0.01). Finally, quercetin significantly restored the detrimental effects of Cr(VI).

CONCLUSION

The results indicated that quercetin protects the oocytes against Cr(VI) toxicity through the suppression of oxidative stress and apoptosis. The conclusions drawn from our study's findings suggest that quercetin might be useful agent for oocyte maturation in case of possible exposure to toxic substances such as chromium.

Ovarian apoptosis is regulated by carbohydrate intake but not by protein intake in speckled cockroaches

When the likelihood of reproducing successfully is low, any prior investment in developing oocytes may be wasted. One means of recouping this investment is oosorption - where ova are absorbed and resources salvaged so they can be re-allocated to other traits. Food-limited female speckled cockroaches (Nauphoeta cinerea) appear to use this strategy. However, it is unclear if total food intake or the availability of specific nutrients induces this process. Here, we used the geometric framework of nutrition to determine how protein, carbohydrate and energy intake affect levels of ovarian apoptosis and necrosis (controlled versus uncontrolled cell death) in the terminal oocytes of female N. cinerea. We then compare the effects of nutrient intake on apoptosis (a key step towards oosorption) and offspring production to better understand the relationship between diet, apoptosis and female fitness. We found that even when food was abundant, females experienced high levels of apoptosis if their diet lacked carbohydrate. Necrosis was reduced when energy intake was high, but largely irrespective of nutrient ratio. Offspring production peaked on a low protein, high carbohydrate nutrient ratio (1_P:7.96_C), similar to that which minimized apoptosis (1_P:7.34_C) but not in the region of nutrient space that minimized necrosis. Thus, females consuming an ideal nutrient blend for reproduction can invest heavily in their current brood without needing to salvage nutrients from developing ova. However, offspring production was more dependent on carbohydrate consumption than apoptosis was, suggesting that the importance of carbohydrate in reproduction goes beyond regulating oosorption. This reliance on carbohydrate for female reproduction may reflect the unusual reproductive and nutritional physiology of speckled cockroaches; attributes that make this species an exciting model for understanding how diet regulates reproduction.

Potential Role of Quercetin in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Its Complications: A Review

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common multisystem disease with reproductive, metabolic and psychological abnormalities. It is characterized by a high prevalence rate in women of childbearing age and highly heterogeneous clinical manifestations, which seriously harm women’s physical and mental health. Quercetin (QUR) is a natural compound of flavonoids found in a variety of foods and medicinal plants. It can intervene with the pathologic process of PCOS from multiple targets and channels and has few adverse reactions. It is mentioned in this review that QUR can improve ovulation disorder, relieve Insulin resistance (IR), reduce androgen, regulate lipid metabolism, regulate gut microbiota and improve vascular endothelial function, which is of great significance in the treatment of PCOS.

Integrated Network Pharmacology and Clinical Study to Reveal the Effects and Mechanisms of Bushen Huoxue Huatan Decoction on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Objective

Bushen Huoxue Huatan Decoction (BHHD) is a classic prescription for treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aims to explore the effects and possible mechanisms of BHHD on PCOS by integrating network pharmacology and clinical study.

Methods

The components and potential drug targets of BHHD were analysed using the TCMSP platform, and the potential pathogenesis targets for PCOS were analysed using the GeneCards and OMIM databases. Subsequently, a disease-compound-target network diagram was established to identify the targets of BHHD treatment on PCOS. In addition, protein-protein interaction analysis, KEGG pathway analysis, and Gene Ontology biological analysis were carried out to reveal the mechanisms of BHHD. To further validate the analysis, a clinical trial involving 62 PCOS patients was conducted. All patients were treated with BHHD for 3 months and the ovulation rate, anthropometric indicators, clinical symptoms, and serological indicators were measured and compared before and after treatment.

Results

The network pharmacology analysis showed that quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol are the most significant active components in BHHD; STAT3, Jun, AKT1, MAPK3, MAPK1, and TP53 are the most critical drug targets; regulating hormones, reversing insulin (INS) resistance, exerting anti-inflammatory effects, and improving fertility might be the most important mechanisms of BHHD in the treatment of PCOS. After BHHD administration, the cyclic ovulation rate and the clinical symptoms including acanthosis nigricans and acne of patients were obviously improved. The serum endocrine levels of luteinising hormone (LH), LH/follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, insulin (INS), and area under the INS curve were evidently reversed, and the serum inflammatory factors levels including human interleukin (IL)-18, IL-16, IL-1β, IL-8, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, and human leukocyte differentiation antigen CD40 ligand were greatly reduced.

Conclusion

BHHD has a good therapeutic effect on PCOS, and its mechanisms may be related to regulating hormone levels, improving insulin resistance, alleviating inflammation, and promoting pregnancy.

Effects of Selenium as a Dietary Source on Performance, Inflammation, Cell Damage, and Reproduction of Livestock Induced by Heat Stress: A Review

Heat stress as a result of global warming has harmful consequences for livestock and is thus becoming an urgent issue for animal husbandry worldwide. Ruminants, growing pigs, and poultry are very susceptible to heat stress because of their fast growth, rapid metabolism, high production levels, and sensitivity to temperature. Heat stress compromises the efficiency of animal husbandry by affecting performance, gastrointestinal health, reproductive physiology, and causing cell damage. Selenium (Se) is an essential nutritional trace element for livestock production, which acts as a structural component in at least 25 selenoproteins (SELs); it is involved in thyroid hormone synthesis, and plays a key role in the antioxidant defense system. Dietary Se supplementation has been confirmed to support gastrointestinal health, production performance, and reproductive physiology under conditions of heat stress. The underlying mechanisms include the regulation of nutrient digestibility influenced by gastrointestinal microorganisms, antioxidant status, and immunocompetence. Moreover, heat stress damage to the gastrointestinal and mammary barrier is closely related to cell physiological functions, such as the fluidity and stability of cellular membranes, and the inhibition of receptors as well as transmembrane transport protein function. Se also plays an important role in inhibiting cell apoptosis and reducing cell inflammatory response induced by heat stress. This review highlights the progress of research regarding the dietary supplementation of Se in the mitigation of heat stress, addressing its mechanism and explaining the effect of Se on cell damage caused by heat stress, in order to provide a theoretical reference for the use of Se to mitigate heat stress in livestock.

Environmental heat stress in rabbits: implications and ameliorations

Profitable production of rabbit meat requires comfortable environment for expression of good quality traits embedded in the genetic components of rabbits. One of the major problems facing rabbit production is heat stress, especially in hot regions of the world. This is further aggravated by global warming being experienced as a result of climate change. Rabbits have no or few sweat glands, complicating the problem of heat dissipation, thereby predisposing the animals to heat stress (HS). Heat stress adversely affect welfare and adaptation, feed consumption and utilization, immunity and health status, growth, reproduction, and milk production in rabbits. Rabbits are homoeothermic animals. They should be capable of body temperature regulation within a narrow range. Thermoregulation is extremely poor in rabbits because of lack of sweat glands. Rabbits are highly sensitive to high ambient temperature. The presence of thick insulator fur on the skin further impedes heat loss in rabbits. This review summarizes data available literatures in the last two decades (2000-2020). Short compilation on management techniques adopted in rearing rabbits under hot conditions is included.

Autophagy as a Therapeutic Target of Natural Products Enhancing Embryo Implantation

Infertility is an emerging health issue worldwide, and female infertility is intimately associated with embryo implantation failure. Embryo implantation is an essential process during the initiation of prenatal development. Recent studies have strongly suggested that autophagy in the endometrium is the most important factor for successful embryo implantation. In addition, several studies have reported the effects of various natural products on infertility improvement via the regulation of embryo implantation, embryo quality, and endometrial receptivity. However, it is unclear whether natural products can improve embryo implantation ability by regulating endometrial autophagy. Therefore, we performed a literature review of studies on endometrial autophagy, embryo implantation, natural products, and female infertility. Based on the information from these studies, this review suggests a new treatment strategy for female infertility by proposing natural products that have been proven to be safe and effective as endometrial autophagy regulators; additionally, we provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the regulation of endometrial autophagy by natural products and female infertility, with an emphasis on embryo implantation.

Dietary hawthorn-leaves flavonoids improves ovarian function and liver lipid metabolism in aged breeder hens

Hawthorn-leaves flavonoids (HF), extracted from hawthorn leaves, were reported to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypolipidemic properties. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of dietary HF on the reproduction performance and liver lipid metabolism of aged breeder hens. A total of 270 aged Qiling breeder hens (60-wk-old) were randomly divided into 3 treatments: 1) basic corn-soybean diet (CON); 2) basic corn-soybean diet supplemented with 30 mg/kg HF (LHF); 3) basic corn-soybean diet supplemented with 60 mg/kg HF (HHF). The results showed that supplemented HF significantly improved the egg-laying rate and hatching rate of aged breeder hens (P < 0.05). HF treatment reduced the serum TG, T-CHO and L-LDL levels (P < 0.05), and upregulated the mRNA expressions of ESR1, ESR2, VTGⅡ, ApoB, and ApoVI in the liver (P < 0.05). Serum estrogen levels in HF treated groups were elevated compared with the CON group (P < 0.05). In the HHF group, the number of the primordial follicles was higher in comparison with the CON group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, dietary supplementation with HF improved the activity of antioxidant enzymes (T-AOC, GSH-Pχ) (P < 0.05), following with the reversed ovarian apoptosis and morphological damage. In addition, 60 mg/kg dietary HF upregulated the protein expression of PCNA and Nrf2 in the ovary (P < 0.05). In summary, dietary supplementation with HF could improve the reproduction performance through regulating liver lipid metabolism and improving ovarian function in aged breeder hens.

Inhibiting bridge integrator 2 phosphorylation leads to improved oocyte quality, ovarian health and fertility in aging and after chemotherapy in mice

Female ovaries degenerate about 20 years earlier than testes leading to reduced primordial follicle reserve and a reduction in oocyte quality. Here we found that bridge integrator 2 (BIN2) is enriched in mouse ovaries and oocytes and that global knockout of this protein improves both female fertility and oocyte quality. Quantitative ovarian proteomics and phosphoproteomics showed that Bin2 knockout led to a decrease in phosphorylated ribosomal protein S6 (p-RPS6), a component of the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway and greatly increased nicotinamide nucleotide transhydrogenase (NNT), the free-radical detoxifier. Mechanistically, we find that phosphorylation of BIN2 at Thr423 and Ser424 leads to its translocation from the membrane to the cytoplasm, subsequent phosphorylation of RPS6 and inhibition of Nnt translation. We synthesized a BIN2-penetrating peptide (BPP) designed to inhibit BIN2 phosphorylation and found that a 3-week BPP treatment improved primordial follicle reserve and oocyte quality in aging and after chemotherapy-induced premature ovarian failure without discernible side effects.

Potential effets of ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba, L.) on female reproduction

This minireview will briefly outline the basic knowledge concerning the provenance, biological active constituents of ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba, L.) and its general health effects. Ginkgo has been shown to affect female reproductive functions: it can affect ovarian folliculo- and oogenesis, embryogenesis, promote ovarian granulosa cell apoptosis, reduce their proliferation and the release of ovarian hormones. Usually, ginkgo extract mainly suppresses, but its constituents like amifostine, leuprorelin, quercetin and kaempherol can promote ovarian functions. This may indicate the existence of anti-reproductive ginkgo constituent(s), such as ginkgolide B and allopregnenolone which, like ginkgo extract, can promote ovarian cell apoptosis and suppress ovarian follicullogenesis and oogenesis. Ginkgo effects could be mediated by an action on brain functions, ovarian steroidogenesis, oxidative processes, intracellular regulators of ovarian cell proliferation and apoptosis and GABA receptors. Ginkgo and its molecules, ginkgolide B and allopregnenolone can be useful for prevention and treatment of reproduction-related disorders like ovarian cancer, ovarian ischemia and menopausal syndrome. On the other hand, its constituents amifostine, leuprorelin, quercetin and kaempherol could be potentially applicable as biostimulators of female reproductive processes in human and veterinary medicine and animal production. Nevertheless, application of ginkgo is still limited by insufficient or contradictory knowledge concerning its active constituents, characters, targets and mediators of its action and their functional interrelationships. Impact of ginkgo action on reproductive organs other than ovaries remains largely unknown. Addressing these issues with proper animal and clinical studies could help to understand the distinct efficacy and consequences of medical application of ginkgo.

Ginger root powder enhanced the growth productivity, digestibility, and antioxidative capacity to cope with the impacts of heat stress in rabbits

Heat stress is the most significant environmental factor involved in the impairment of the health status of rabbits and lowering their productivity. Using medicinal feed additives is suggested to relieve heat stress-induced oxidative stress in rabbits. The study investigated the possible protective role of ginger root (Zingiber officinale) against heat stress in rabbits. Five week old rabbits were assigned randomly into four groups (48 rabbits each) and fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 g ginger powder/kg diet. The temperature and relative humidity inside the rabbitry units were kept at 33.0 ± 5.5 °C and 74.5 ± 4.5%, respectively, during 8 weeks fattening period. The results showed that rabbits that received the 7.5 g ginger powder/kg supplement had the highest final body weight. Rabbits that received different ginger powder levels recorded lower mortality values during the experimental period compared to that received the control diet, but the differences were not significant (5.0 vs. 10.0%, respectively). Rabbits fed 5.0 and 7.5 g ginger diet recorded the best food conversion ratio (P < 0.001). The weight of the carcass was significantly increased (P < 0.01) by supplementing ginger powder in diets. The digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and nitrogen free extracts nutrients was increased, but ether extract was significantly decreased (P < 0.001) by using ginger powder in diets. The detected blood metabolites displayed increased total protein but decreased triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in rabbits treated with ginger. Rabbits fed 5.0 and 7.5 g ginger powder had the highest plasma total antioxidative capacity (TAC) and the lowest (P < 0.01) plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration compared to those fed control diet. Conclusively, supplementing ginger powder up to a 5.0 g/kg diet for growing rabbits is recommended to improve the growth performance and enhanced viability under heat stress conditions.

Combination of Quercetin and Vitamin E Supplementation Promotes Yolk Precursor Synthesis and Follicle Development in Aging Breeder Hens via Liver-Blood-Ovary Signal Axis

This study evaluated the capacity of dietary quercetin, vitamin E and their combination to promote follicle development and attenuate organ inflammation by improving the antioxidant capacity of the liver–blood–ovary signal axis of aging broiler breeder hens. The results from this study showed that the combination of quercetin and vitamin E synergistically improved the chicken’s reproductive organ characteristics, and also showed protective effects on liver morphology and histology. Moreover, the antioxidant parameters, reproductive hormones and receptors, liver lipid synthesis, and the levels of mRNAs related to yolk precursor synthesis (very low density apolipoprotein-II and vitellogenin-II), lipid transport (microsomal triglyceride transport protein), lipogenesis (fatty acid synthase), and follicle developments were increased remarkably by the combination of quercetin and vitamin E. The results obtained in this study provide an important reference for the combination of quercetin and vitamin E as a functional feed additive for promoting the functions of the liver–blood–ovary axis, and also as a potential chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agent for improving liver and ovary functions in chickens by acting as a hepatoprotective and oviprotective agent. This could facilitate the transport and exchange of synthetic substances (including hormones, yolk precursors, and other biochemical substances) among the liver–blood–ovary alliances to ensure the synchronous development and functional coordination between the liver and ovary in aging breeder hens.

Abstract

The fertility of female animals is negatively correlated with increasing chronological age. In aging broiler breeder hens, there is a decline in the functionality of the ovary and liver accompanied by hormonal or endocrine changes, a reduction in antioxidant capacity, and a decrease in folliculogenesis. Therefore, improving the reproductive function in aging breeder hens using dietary strategies is of great concern to the poultry breeder. This study evaluated the capacity of dietary quercetin (Q), vitamin E (VE), and their combination (Q + VE) to promote follicle development and attenuate organ inflammation by improving the antioxidant capacity of aging breeder hens. In this study, 400 broiler breeder hens (Tianfu broilers breeder hens, 435 days old) were allotted into four groups (100 birds each) with four replicates each (25 birds each). They were fed diets containing Q (0.4 g/kg), VE (0.2 g/kg), Q + VE (0.4 g/kg + 0.2 g/kg), and a basal diet for 10 weeks. The results showed that Q + VE improved the organ characteristics (p < 0.05), and also that Q + VE showed protective effects on the liver against injury, as well as increasing the antioxidant capacity of the liver, serum, and ovary (p < 0.05). Furthermore, liver lipid synthesis was increased remarkably, as indicated by the changes in triglyceride levels in hens fed Q + VE (p < 0.05). Levels of E2, FSH, and LH, their receptors, and mRNAs related to yolk precursor synthesis were increased by the Q + VE (p < 0.05). Therefore, the combination of quercetin and vitamin E synergistically promotes and regulates the transportation and exchange of synthetic substances among the liver–blood–ovary alliances to ensure the synchronous development and functional coordination between the liver and ovary in aging breeder hens.

[Mechanism of Ziyin recipe for treatment of ovulatory infertility: a network pharmacology-based study and clinical observations]

OBJECTIVE

To explore the mechanisms of Ziyin recipe for treatment of ovulatory infertility based on network pharmacology analysis and evaluate the clinical efficacy of this recipe.

OBJECTIVE

TCMSP, PubChem, Genecards, String, Swiss Target Prediction, and Uniprot databases were searched to identify all the action targets of Ziyin recipe and ovulatory infertility to construct the PPI network. Gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses were performed and the "TCM-active ingredient-target-pathway" network was constructed using Cytoscape 3.6.0. We also designed a controlled clinical trial to verify the clinical effectiveness of Ziyin recipe. The patients were randomized into 2 groups to receive treatment with Western medicine including CC and HMG (control group) and additional treatment with Ziyin recipe, and the dosage of GN, follicular development days, E₂ level of a single dominant follicle on trigger day, ovulation rate, the rate of LUFS, and clinical pregnancy rate were compared between the two groups.

OBJECTIVE

We identified 22 active ingredients and 354 targets of action in Ziyin recipe, 791 targets of ovulatory infertility, and 96 common targets of action shared by Ziyin recipe and ovulatory infertility. According to Degree, the key targets included SRC, MAPK1, HSP90aa1, MAPK3, PTPN11, ESR1, Akt1, EGFR, NR3C1 and KNG1. Enrichment analysis of GO biological process showed that Ziyin recipe mainly focused on steroid hormonemediated signaling pathway, oxidation, reduction, and apoptosis. The most significantly enriched signaling pathways included PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, RAP1 signaling pathway, HIF-1 signaling pathway, estrogen signaling pathway, ovarian steroid production, and steroid hormone biosynthesis. The results of the clinical trial showed that Ziyin recipe significantly reduced the dose of GN, accelerated follicle development, increased E₂ level of single dominant follicle on the trigger day, and increased the cycle ovulation rate and pregnancy rate.

OBJECTIVE

The therapeutic effects of Ziyin recipe are probably mediated through different pathways to promote follicle development, thus improving ovulation rate and clinical pregnancy rate of infertile patients with ovulatory disorders.

Melatonin Restores the Developmental Competence of Heat Stressed Porcine Oocytes, and Alters the Expression of Genes Related to Oocyte Maturation

Abstract

Melatonin enhances the quality and in vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes under heat stress (HS), but the mechanism of melatonin in reducing HS injury on oocytes is not fully understood. In this study, porcine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were randomly divided into three groups. The COCs of the control group were cultured at 38.5 °C for 42 h, and the COCs of the HS group were cultured at 41.5 °C for 4 h, and then transferred into 38.5 °C for 38 h. The COCs of the HS + melatonin group were cultured with 10⁻⁹ M melatonin under the same conditions as the HS group. The survival rate, maturation rate, distribution of α-tubulin and F-actin of the oocytes were assessed. In addition, the expression profiles for genes related to the oocyte maturation, including heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) were analyzed by real-time quantitative PCR. The results showed that HS decreased the survival rate and maturation rate, distribution of α-tubulin and F-actin, but melatonin treatment could partly counteract these adverse effects. In addition, HS increased expression of HSP70 and NRF2 mRNA, and melatonin treatment had a similar effect on HSP70 expression, but had a contrary effect on NRF2 expression. Furthermore, HS inhibited expression of CDK1 and GDF9 mRNA, but melatonin treatment could weaken the effect on GDF9 expression induced by HS. In summary, melatonin treatment could attenuate the unfavorable effects induced by HS to enhance developmental competence of porcine oocytes during IVM.

Ameliorative effects of quercetin on folliculogenesis in diabetic mice: a stereological study

A high risk of reproductive disorders can be seen in diabetic pregnancy. Reproductive disorders associated with diabetes may result from alterations in the function of the ovary. In this study, we investigated the ameliorative effects of quercetin as a phytoestrogen and antidiabetic agent on the folliculogenesis in diabetic mice. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice were treated with 30 mg/kg/day quercetin for four weeks. The volume of ovary, follicles, and corpus luteum were significantly decreased in the diabetic mice. The number of growing follicles (secondary, antral, and Graafian follicles) and corpus luteum was significantly decreased in the diabetic mice. Also, the volume of oocytes was significantly decreased in antral and Graafian follicles. Our results indicated that the administration of quercetin in diabetic mice increased the volume of the ovary and growing follicles, the number of growing follicles and corpus luteum. It also significantly decreased the number of atretic follicles. As a result, it may be concluded that the impaired follicular growth and development caused by hyperglycemia in diabetic mice can be alleviated by quercetin treatment.

Quercetin alleviated H2 O2 -induced apoptosis and steroidogenic impairment in goat luteinized granulosa cells

Quercetin (Que) is a natural flavonoid in most plants. Luteinized granulosa cell (LGC) culture is necessary for the study of follicle growth/differentiation. In the present study, we analyzed the role of Que in steroid production and apoptosis in hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 )-treated goat LGCs. The results showed that treatment with H2 O2 induced apoptosis in goat LGCs, and treatment with Que decreased LGC apoptosis induced by H2 O2 (P < .05), accompanied with the different expressions of BAX, BCL-2, Caspase 3, and Cleaved caspase 3. Meanwhile, the messenger RNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2 like 2 (Nrf2) and its downstream genes were upregulated with H2 O2 +Que treatment, accompanied by the increased cellular viability (P < .05). Furthermore, Que alleviated H2 O2 -induced reduction in the secretion of progesterone (P4 ) (P < .05); however, it had no effect on the secretion of estrogen (E2 ). Simultaneously, the expressions of StAR and P450scc were increased when treated with Que +H2 O2 , compared with the group treated with only H2 O2 (P < .05). In conclusion, it is observed that Que could alleviate the H2 O2 -induced apoptosis and steroidogenic impairment in goat LGCs, which might be mediated by the Nrf2 pathway.

Quercetin supplementation to the thawing and incubation media of boar sperm improves post-thaw sperm characteristics and the in vitro production of pig embryos

Elevated levels of reactive oxygen species can cause oxidative stress, which could lead to membrane damage, decreased fertility, and spermatozoan morphological deformities. Antioxidants can be supplemented to reduce the impacts of oxidative stress. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of supplementing quercetin (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 mM) during the thawing and incubation of frozen-thawed boar semen on spermatozoan characteristics, IVF kinetics (n = 400) and subsequent embryonic development (n = 1340). Spermatozoa were evaluated for motility, viability, and membrane lipid peroxidation levels at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 h after thawing. Embryos were evaluated for IVF kinetics 12 h after IVF (penetration, polyspermy, male pronucleus formation, IVF efficiency) and cleavage and blastocyst formation at 48 h and 144 h after IVF, respectively. Spermatozoa supplemented with 0.25 mM quercetin had significantly higher (P < 0.05) motility (51.67±8.50 %) and percent of viable cells (61.21 ± 2.44 %) compared to all other treatments at 10 h after thawing, in addition to having significantly (P < 0.05) lower levels of hydroperoxide (3.38 ± 0.88 μM/10⁷cells). There were no differences in penetration rates and male pronucleus formation between treatment groups. Supplementation of quercetin significantly decreased (P < 0.05) polyspermy and significantly increased (P < 0.05) the percentage of embryos reaching blastocyst stage of development by 144 h after IVF compared to no supplementation. Results indicated that supplementing frozen-thawed boar semen with 0.25 mM quercetin improves sperm characteristics up to 10 h after thawing and decreases polyspermy while improving early embryonic development in pigs.

Overview of biological effects of Quercetin on ovary

Over the last few decades, using natural products has been increased to treat different diseases. Today, great attention has been pointed toward the usage of natural products such as flavonoids, especially Quercetin (QUR), in the treatment of diseases. QUR as a natural antioxidant has been traditionally used to prevent or treat a variety of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), obesity, chronic inflammation, and reproductive system dysfunction. Several studies demonstrated that QUR acts as an anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, antioxidant, and anticancer agent. With this in view, in this study, we intended to describe an overview of the biological effects of QUR on the ovary. QUR improves the quality of oocytes and embryos. It affects the proliferation and apoptosis and decreases the oxidative stress in granulosa cells (GCs). Furthermore, QUR can be used as a complementary and alternative therapy in ovarian cancer and it has beneficial effects in the treatment of PCOS patients. It seems that QUR as a supplementary factor has different activities for the treatment of different disorders and it also has bidirectional activities. However, further investigations are needed for understanding the efficacy of QUR in the treatment and improvement of gynecological patients.

Protective Effects and Possible Mechanisms of Actions of Bushen Cuyun Recipe on Diminished Ovarian Reserve Induced by Cyclophosphamide in Rats

Backgrounds

Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) contributes significantly to female infertility. Bushen Cuyun Recipe (BCR, Tradename Yueliang Yin), a product marketed in China, has shown effects in the treatment of female infertility in clinical practices of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In this study, we aimed to investigate the chemical compositions of BCR and its efficacy based on scientific evidence and pharmacological mechanisms in DOR treatments.

Methods

The chemical compositions of BCR were determined by the UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap MS method. DOR was induced in a rat model by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (CTX) 90 mg/kg once. After the CTX treatment for 14 days, rats were intragastrically administrated deionized water, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), or BCR in low, middle, and high doses for 30 days. Ovarian index, ovarian morphology, follicle number, and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in serum were determined to assess the effects of BCR. To investigate possible action mechanisms, network pharmacological analysis was used to predict possible pathways in the effects of BCR on female infertility. In experimental studies, the contents of hormones in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (HPOA, including estradiol (E₂), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)) and pyroptosis-related proteins, including gasdermin D (GSDMD), caspase-1, and interleukin-18 (IL-18), in ovarian were detected by ELISA, immunofluorescence and Western blot.

Results

Chemical studies revealed a total 84 components in BCR, which included 43 flavonoids, 13 triterpenoids, 11 phenolic acids, 8 alkaloids, 1 coumarin, 1 anthraquinone, and 7 other components. After treatments with BCR, the ovarian morphology, ovarian index, estrous cycle, growing follicles and corpus luteum from last ovulation, and serum AMH in DOR rats were significantly improved. Network pharmacological analysis suggested that the NOD-like receptor signaling pathway ranked No. 1 among the mechanisms by which BCR affects female infertility. Experimental results demonstrated that the content of serum FSH in DOR rats was significantly decreased and the contents of serum GnRH and E₂ were significantly elevated after BCR treatment and that the elevated level of GSDMD, caspase-1, and IL-18 was significantly reversed in BCR-treated rats.

Conclusions

The chemical compositions of BCR were first identified in the present study. BCR was demonstrated to show protective effects on DOR. The possible mechanisms of BCR on DOR might be mediated by regulating gonadal hormones of the HPOA and protecting granulosa cells in ovary against pyroptosis.

Selenium Attenuates Chronic Heat Stress-Induced Apoptosis via the Inhibition of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Mouse Granulosa Cells

Heat stress induces apoptosis in various cells. Selenium, an essential micronutrient, has beneficial effects in maintaining the cellular physiological functions. However, its potential protective action against chronic heat stress (CHS)-induced apoptosis in granulosa cells and the related molecular mechanisms are not fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the roles of selenium in CHS-induced apoptosis in mouse granulosa cells and explored its underlying mechanism. The heat treatment for 6–48 h induced apoptosis, potentiated caspase 3 activity, increased the expression levels of apoptosis-related gene BAX and ER stress markers, glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein homologous protein (CHOP) in mouse granulosa cells. The treatment with ER stress inhibitor 4-PBA significantly attenuated the adverse effects caused by CHS. Selenium treatment significantly attenuated the CHS- or thapsigargin (Tg, an ER stress activator)-induced apoptosis, potentiation of caspase 3 activity, and the increased protein expression levels of BAX, GRP78, and CHOP. Additionally, treatment of the cells with 5 ng/mL selenium significantly ameliorated the levels of estradiol, which were decreased in response to heat exposure. Consistently, administering selenium supplement alleviated the hyperthermia-caused reduction in the serum estradiol levels in vivo. Together, our findings indicate that selenium has protective effects on CHS-induced apoptosis via inhibition of the ER stress pathway. The current study provides new insights in understanding the role of selenium during the process of heat-induced cell apoptosis.

Quercetin directly promotes rabbit ovarian steroidogenesis

<p>The bioflavonoid quercetin is a component of food with numerous biological effects, but its function in reproductive processes remains to be investigated. This study aimed to examine the direct action of quercetin on steroid hormone release in rabbit ovaries. We analysed the effect of quercetin (0, 1, 10, and 100 ng/mL) on cultured rabbit ovarian fragments. The release of progesterone (P4), testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) were analysed by enzyme immunoassay. Quercetin promoted P4, T, and E2 release by rabbit ovarian fragments. These observations indicate that quercetin can directly stimulate rabbit ovarian steroidogenesis – an essential regulator of reproduction and fecundity. The application of dietary quercetin for control of rabbit reproduction is discussed.</p>

Effect of quercetin on ovarian cells of pigs and cattle

The bioflavonoid quercetin is a component of food with numerous biological effects, but its function in reproductive processes and mechanisms in various species remain unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of quercetin on ovarian cells isolated from ovaries of two phytophagous mammalian species (i.e. pigs and cattle). There was analysis of the effect of quercetin (0, 1, 10, and 100 ng/mL) on cultured granulosa cells of pigs and cattle. Proliferation (PCNA) and apoptosis (bax) markers and release of progesterone (P4), testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), and IGF-I were quantified using quantitative immunocytochemistry, enzyme immunoassay, or radioimmunoassay. Treatments with quercetin reduced PCNA and bax accumulation and decreased P4 release from both granulosa cells of pigs and cattle. In cells of pigs, treatment with quercetin reduced T output, however, in cells of cattle quercetin increased T release. In cells of pigs, quercetin reduced IGF-I release. In cells of cattle, quercetin at smaller doses (1 or 10 ng/mL), promoted and at a large dose (100 ng/mL) reduced IGF-I secretions. There was no substantial E2 release from granulosa cells of pigs or cattle. These observations are the first to indicate there is a direct action of quercetin on basic ovarian cell functions (proliferation, apoptosis, and hormones release) which can be species-specific.

Endogenous and Exogenous Modulation of Nrf2 Mediated Oxidative Stress Response in Bovine Granulosa Cells: Potential Implication for Ovarian Function

Nrf2 is a redox sensitive transcription factor regulating the expression of antioxidant genes as defense mechanism against various stressors. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential role of noncoding miRNAs as endogenous and quercetin as exogenous regulators of Nrf2 pathway in bovine granulosa cells. For this cultured granulosa cells were used for modulation of miRNAs (miR-28, 153 and miR-708) targeting the bovine Nrf2 and supplementation of quercentin to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of the Nrf2 antioxidant system. Moreover, cultured cells were treated with hydrogen peroxide to induce oxidative stress in those cells. Our results showed that, oxidative stress activated the expression of Nrf2 as a defense mechanism, while suppressing the expression of those miRNAs. Overexpression of those miRNAs resulted in downregulation of Nrf2 expression resulted in higher ROS accumulation, reduced mitochondrial activity and cellular proliferation. Quercetin supplementation showed its protective role against oxidative stress induced by H₂O₂ by inducing the expression of antioxidant enzymes. In conclusion, this study highlighted the involvement of miR-153, miR-28 and miR-708 in regulatory network of Nrf2 mediated antioxidant system in bovine granulosa cells function. Furthermore, quercetin at a low dose played a protective role in bovine granulosa cells against oxidative stress damage.

In Silico Computational Transcriptomics Reveals Novel Endocrine Disruptors in Largemouth Bass ( Micropterus salmoides)

In recent years, decreases in fish populations have been attributed, in part, to the effect of environmental chemicals on ovarian development. To understand the underlying molecular events we developed a dynamic model of ovary development linking gene transcription to key physiological end points, such as gonadosomatic index (GSI), plasma levels of estradiol (E2) and vitellogenin (VTG), in largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides). We were able to identify specific clusters of genes, which are affected at different stages of ovarian development. A subnetwork was identified that closely linked gene expression and physiological end points and by interrogating the Comparative Toxicogenomic Database (CTD), quercetin and tretinoin (ATRA) were identified as two potential candidates that may perturb this system. Predictions were validated by investigation of reproductive associated transcripts using qPCR in ovary and in the liver of both male and female largemouth bass treated after a single injection of quercetin and tretinoin (10 and 100 μg/kg). Both compounds were found to significantly alter the expression of some of these genes. Our findings support the use of omics and online repositories for identification of novel, yet untested, compounds. This is the first study of a dynamic model that links gene expression patterns across stages of ovarian development.

Quercetin increases the antioxidant capacity of the ovary in menopausal rats and in ovarian granulosa cell culture in vitro

BACKGROUND

Menopause is the most important sign of aging in women, and the ovary is the organ most sensitive to aging. Quercetin is a potential antioxidant and free radical scavenger that is widely found in fruits, vegetables, and leaves. However, the effect of quercetin on ovarian aging has not been elucidated, and the mechanism underlying its antioxidative effect remains unclear. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether quercetin protects ovarian function by decreasing oxidative stress.

METHODS

In an in vivo experiment, female menopausal rats (12 months old) were intragastrically administered quercetin at three doses (12.5 mg/kg, 25 mg/kg, and 50 mg/kg) for 90 days, and the estrous cycles were determined by vaginal smearing. In an in vitro experiment, rat primary ovarian granulosa cells were cultured and treated with H₂O₂ (400 μM) alone or H₂O₂ plus quercetin at 5 μM, 20 μM, or 50 μM. The levels of the hormones estradiol (E₂), progesterone (P), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) were detected by radioimmunoassay. The serum levels of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were examined. The expression levels of the oxidative stress-related genes SOD-1, catalase (CAT) and glutathione synthetase (GSS) in the ovaries and ovarian granulosa cells were detected by Western blot.

RESULTS

The in vivo results demonstrated that quercetin had no effects on ovarian morphology, hormone secretion, or the estrous cycle in menopausal rats. Although no significant changes were detected in the serum levels of T-AOC, SOD, GSH, GSH-PX, and GST between the quercetin and control groups, the mRNA and protein expression levels of the oxidative stress-related genes SOD-1, CAT and GSS in menopausal rat ovaries were increased by low-dose quercetin. Moreover, the in vitro results demonstrated that quercetin significantly rescued the decrease in cell viability by H₂О₂-induced oxidative stress and enhanced the H₂O₂-induced decrease in expression of oxidative stress-related proteins.

CONCLUSIONS

Together, the results of this study indicated that quercetin increased the antioxidant capacity of the ovary by upregulating the expression of some oxidative stress-related genes both in vivo and in vitro.
