Abstract
Previous studies have indicated that hydrogen-rich water (HW) treatment can delay fruit ripening and senescence. However, little is known about the HW-delaying pulp breakdown. In this study, eight physiological characteristics revealed that HW treatment delayed both pericarp browning and pulp breakdown of litchi fruit. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the changes in litchi pulp, a combination of multiple metabolomics and gene expression analyses was conducted, assessing 67 primary metabolites, 103 volatiles, 31 amino acids, and 13 crucial metabolite-related genes. Results showed that HW treatment promoted starch degradation, decelerated cell wall degradation and glycolysis, and maintained the flavor and quality of litchi fruit. Furthermore, HW treatment stimulated the production of volatile alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, olefins, and amino acids, which might play a vital role in HW-delaying pulp breakdown. This study sheds light on the mechanism by which HW delayed pulp breakdown by investigating small molecule metabolites and metabolic pathways.

Abstract
Lemon fruit (Citrus limon (L.) Burm.) is highly appreciated by consumers due to its antioxidant properties and health benefits. However, its shelf life can be limited by various factors, reducing the economy, and thereafter, new strategies to maintain the quality of lemons are necessary. Melatonin is a derivative of tryptamine, which is ubiquitously found in plants and has a wide range of functions regulating numerous physiological processes in plants. During two consecutive harvests, we evaluated the effect of preharvest treatments with melatonin on crop yield and on quality and functional properties of fruit of lemon cv. Verna at harvest and weekly after storage up to 28 days at 2 and 10 °C plus 2 days at 20 °C. Melatonin was applied as foliar spray treatments at dosages of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mM and at three different stages of fruit development. The results showed that melatonin treatment had a positive impact on crop yield as well as in fruit quality parameters, such as firmness, content of bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activity, especially for a 0.5 mM dose. Taking all these effects into account, the application of melatonin along the growth cycle of fruit development could be considered a non-contaminant and eco-friendly tool for improving crop yield and quality of 'Verna' lemons at harvest and during postharvest storage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluated the effects of nitric oxide (NO) treatment on ascorbic acid (AsA) metabolism and mung bean sprout quality. It examined changes in the AsA content, enzyme activity associated with AsA metabolism, antioxidant capacity, cell membrane composition, and cellular structure to clarify the effects of NO on mung bean sprouts. RESULTS Nitric oxide treatment preserved mung bean sprout quality by enhancing significantly the activity of enzymes involved in the l-galactose pathway (including guanosine diphosphate (GDP)glutathione (-d-mannose pyrophosphorylase, GDP-mannose-3',5'-epimerase, GDP-l-galactose phosphorylase, l-galactose-1-phosphate phosphatase, l-galactose dehydrogenase, and l-galactose-1,4-lactone dehydrogenase) and the AsA-glutathione (GSH)(Beijing Solarbio Science and Technology Co.,Ltd., Beijing, China) cycle (including ascorbate peroxidase, ascorbic acid oxidase, glutathione reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, and monodehydroascorbate reductase) during the germination and storage stage. Increased enzyme activity led to an increase in AsA content and enhanced antioxidant capacity, and reduced the membrane lipid damage in mung bean sprouts. This was demonstrated by higher levels of DPPH radical scavenging capacity, unsaturated fatty acids and phospholipids, along with lower levels of hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anions, and malondiadehyde, in NO-treated mung bean sprouts. Scanning electron microscopy also revealed that NO treatment maintained the integrity of the cellular structure of the mung bean sprouts. CONCLUSION Nitric oxide accelerates AsA metabolism effectively by regulating the biosynthesis and regeneration of AsA in mung bean sprouts. These changes increased AsA levels, alleviated membrane lipid damage, delayed senescence, and maintained the quality of mung bean sprouts during storage. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The flavonoids in citrus fruits are crucial physiological regulators and natural bioactive products of high pharmaceutical value. Melatonin is a pleiotropic hormone that can regulate plant morphogenesis and stress resistance and alter the accumulation of flavonoids in these processes. However, the direct effect of melatonin on citrus flavonoids remains unclear. In this study, nontargeted metabolomics and transcriptomics were utilized to reveal how exogenous melatonin affects flavonoid biosynthesis in "Bingtangcheng" citrus fruits. The melatonin treatment at 0.1 mmol L-1 significantly increased the contents of seven polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and up-regulated a series of flavonoid pathway genes, including 4CL (4-coumaroyl CoA ligase), FNS (flavone synthase), and FHs (flavonoid hydroxylases). Meanwhile, CHS (chalcone synthase) was down-regulated, causing a decrease in the content of most flavonoid glycosides. Pearson correlation analysis obtained 21 transcription factors co-expressed with differentially accumulated flavonoids, among which the AP2/EREBP members were the most numerous. Additionally, circadian rhythm and photosynthesis pathways were enriched in the DEG (differentially expressed gene) analysis, suggesting that melatonin might also mediate changes in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway by affecting the fruit's circadian rhythm. These results provide valuable information for further exploration of the molecular mechanisms through which melatonin regulates citrus fruit metabolism.

Abstract
Postharvest avocado losses are mainly due to anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Chemical fungicides are effective, but their negative effects on health and the environment have led to the search for sustainable alternatives such as biopolymer-based coatings and natural compounds. Therefore, chitin nanocrystals (NCChit) were extracted using a sustainable deep eutectic solvent (DES) and chemically modified into oxidized chitin nanocrystals (O-NCChit) or deacetylated chitin nanocrystals (D-NCChit) to modulate and increase the charge surface density and the dispersibility of the crystals. The modified NCChits were dispersed with silk fibroins (SF), essential oil (EO), melatonin (MT) and/or phenylalanine (Phe) to elaborate active coatings. Antioxidant and antifungal in vitro analyses showed that the O-NCChit/SF-based coating had the best performance. In addition, in vivo tests were carried out through the artificial inoculation of C. gloeosporioides on coated avocados. O-NCChit/SF/MT-based coatings reduced the severity of anthracnose by 45 %, the same effect as the chemical fungicide (Prochloraz®). Moreover, avocado quality parameters during cold storage and the shelf-life period were also evaluated, where nonsignificant differences were observed. Therefore, this study demonstrates the great potential of O-NCChit and SF in combination with active compounds for the control of anthracnose in 'Hass' avocados.

Abstract
Postharvest decay of goji berries, mainly caused by Alternaria alternata, results in significant economic losses. To investigate the effects of melatonin (MLT) on resistance to Alternaria rot in goji berries, the fruits were immersed in the MLT solutions with varying concentrations (0, 25, 50, and 75 μmol L-1) and then inoculated with A. alternata. The results showed that the fruits treated with 50 μmol L-1 MLT exhibited the lowest disease incidence and least lesion diameter. Meanwhile, endogenous MLT in the fruits treated with 50 μmol L-1 MLT showed higher levels than in the control fruits during storage at 4 ± 0.5 °C. Further, the enzymatic activities and expressions of genes encoding peroxidase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamate 4-hydroxylase, 4-coumarate-CoA ligase, chalcone synthase, chalcone isomerase, and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase were induced in the treated fruit during storage. UPLC-ESI-MS/MS revealed that secondary metabolites in the fruits on day 0, in order of highest to lowest levels, were rutin, p-coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, naringenin, quercetin, kaempferol, and protocatechuic acid. MLT-treated fruits exhibited higher levels of secondary metabolites than the control. In conclusion, MLT treatment contributed to controlling the postharvest decay of goji fruit during storage by boosting endogenous MLT levels, thus activating the antioxidant system and secondary metabolism.

Abstract
Aspergillus flavus not only reduces kiwifruit production but also synthesizes carcinogenic aflatoxins, resulting in a relevant threat to human health. p-Hydroxybenzoic acid (pHBA) is one of the most abundant phenolics in kiwifruit. In this study, pHBA was found to reduce A. flavus mycelial growth by blocking the fungal mitotic exit network (MEN) and cytokinesis and to inhibit the biosynthesis of aflatoxins B1 and B2. The application of pHBA promoted the accumulation of endogenous pHBA and induced oxidative stress in A. flavus-infected kiwifruit, resulting in an increase in H2O2 content and catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. Preventive and curative treatments with 5 mM pHBA reduced A. flavus advancement by 46.1% and 68.0%, respectively. Collectively, the antifungal and elicitor properties of pHBA were examined for the first time, revealing new insights into the role of pHBA in the defense response of kiwifruit against A. flavus infection.

Abstract
Melatonin treatment was investigated for the sensory quality and senescence in postharvest cattails (Typha latifolia L.) during cold storage. The 0.75 mM melatonin treatment reduced surface browning and delaying lignification of Cattails stored at 4 °C. The results showed that melatonin treatment slowed weight loss and firmness, maintained sensory quality and reducing sugar content. Melatonin treatment reduced browning by inhibiting the increase of MDA and H2O2 contents and POD activity. Melatonin treatment maintained high non-enzymatic antioxidant components (Vitamin C and total phenolic content) and antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, and APX), thereby alleviating the browning and senescence of postharvest cattails. These findings indicate that melatonin treatment can maintain postharvest cattails quality.

Abstract
Hami melon is prone to postharvest perishing. Melatonin is a signaling molecule involved in a variety of physiological processes in fruit, and it improves fruit quality. We hypothesized that melatonin treatment would improve the storage quality of Hami melon by altering its respiration and reactive oxygen species (Graphical abstract). Our results indicated that optimal melatonin treatment (0.5 mmol L-1) effectively slowed the softening, weight loss, and respiratory rate of the Hami melon fruit. Furthermore, melatonin markedly improved the antioxidant capacity of the fruit and protected it from oxidative damage by decreasing its contents of superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde. Melatonin significantly enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase. The total phenol, total flavonoids, and ascorbic acid contents were maintained by melatonin treatment. This treatment also repressed the activities of lipase, lipoxygenase, and phospholipase D, which are related to lipid metabolism. Thus, exogenous melatonin can maintain postharvest organoleptic quality of Hami melon fruit by increasing its antioxidant activity and inhibiting reactive oxygen species production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Kiwifruit is highly susceptible to fungal pathogens, such as Botrytis cinerea, which reduce crop production and quality. In this study, dipicolinic acid (DPA), which is one of the main components of Bacillus spores, was evaluated as a new elicitor to enhance kiwifruit resistance to B. cinerea. RESULTS DPA enhances antioxidant capacity and induces the accumulation of phenolics in B. cinerea-infected 'Xuxiang' kiwifruit. The contents of the main antifungal phenolics in kiwifruit, including caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and isoferulic acid, increased after DPA treatment. DPA enhanced H2 O2 levels after 0 and 1 days, which promoted catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, reducing long-term H2 O2 levels. DPA promoted the up-regulation of several kiwifruit defense genes, including CERK1, MPK3, PR1-1, PR1-2, PR5-1 and PR5-2. Furthermore, DPA at 5 mM inhibited B. cinerea symptoms in kiwifruit (95.1% lesion length inhibition) more effectively than the commercial fungicides carbendazim, difenoconazole, prochloraz and thiram. CONCLUSIONS The antioxidant properties of DPA and the main antifungal phenolics of kiwifruit were examined for the first time. This study uncovers new insights regarding the potential mechanisms used by Bacillus species to induce disease resistance. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Effect of post-harvest ripening on cell wall polysaccharides nanostructures, water status, physiochemical properties of peaches and drying behavior under hot air-infrared drying was evaluated. Results showed that the content of water soluble pectins (WSP) increased by 94 %, while the contents of chelate-soluble pectins (CSP), Na2CO3-soluble pectins (NSP) and hemicelluloses (HE) decreased during post-harvest ripening by 60 %, 43 %, and 61 %, respectively. The drying time increased from 3.5 to 5.5 h when the post-harvest time increased from 0 to 6 days. Atomic force microscope analysis showed that depolymerization of hemicelluloses and pectin occurred during post-harvest ripening. Time Domain -NMR observations indicated that reorganization of cell wall polysaccharides nanostructure changed water spatial distribution and cell internal structure, facilitated moisture migration, and affected antioxidant capacity of peaches during drying. This leads to the redistribution of flavor substances (heptanal, n-nonanal dimer and n-nonanal monomer). The current work elucidates the effect of post-harvest ripening on the physiochemical properties and drying behavior of peaches.

Abstract
Phytohormones are naturally occurring small organic molecules found at low concentrations in plants. They perform essential functions in growth and developmental processes, from organ initiation to senescence, including fruit ripening. These regulatory molecules are studied using different experimental approaches, such as performing exogenous applications, evaluating endogenous levels, and/or obtaining genetically modified lines. Here, we discuss the advantages and limitations of current experimental approaches used to study active biomolecules modulating fruit ripening, focusing on melatonin. Although melatonin has been implicated in fruit ripening in several model fruit crops, current knowledge is affected by the different experimental approaches used, which have given different and sometimes even contradictory results. The methods of application and the doses used have produced different results in studies based on exogenous applications, while different measurement methods and ways of expressing results explain most of the variability in studies using correlative analyses. Furthermore, studies on genetically modified crops have focused on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants only. However, TILLING and CRISPR methodologies are becoming essential tools to complement the results from the experimental approaches described above. This will not only help the scientific community better understand the role of melatonin in modulating fruit ripening, but it will also help develop technological advances to improve fruit yield and quality in major crops. The combination of various experimental approaches will undoubtedly lead to a complete understanding of the function of melatonin in fruit ripening in the near future, so that this knowledge can be effectively transferred to the field.

Abstract
Nano-selenium (nano-Se) and melatonin (MT) applications confirmed to boost plant growth and resistance. The mechanism of various ratios of nano-Se and MT foliar application postpone the senescence of fresh cut carnation flowers and improve vase life remains unclear. In this study, a combined effect with nano-Se (nano-Se5, 5 mg/L) and MT(MT1, 1 mg/L) was preferable to the control, nano-Se, and MT treatment alone when it came to delaying flower senescence. They enhance the antioxidant ability of carnation flowers by lowering MDA and H2O2 levels, raising SOD and POD concentrations, and lowering procyanidins biosynthesis (catechins and epicatechin). Inducing the biosynthesis of hormonal compounds (salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, and abscisic acid), their combination also boosted the growth of carnations. Biofortification with nano-Se and MT substantially increased the amounts of key lignin biosynthesis pathway metabolites (L-phenylalanine, p-hydroxycinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, perillyl alcohol, p-Coumaryl alcohol, and cinnamic acid), which may increase stem cellular thickness and facilitate water absorption and transmission. The study hypothesizes that nano-Se and MT synergistic applications act as a new efficient non-toxic preservative to extend the vase life and improve the decorative value of carnations.

Abstract
Spain is the world's leading producer of cherimoya, a climacteric fruit highly appreciated by consumers. However, this fruit species is very sensitive to chilling injury (CI), which limits its storage. In the present experiments, the effects of melatonin applied as dipping treatment on cherimoya fruit CI, postharvest ripening and quality properties were evaluated during storage at 7 °C + 2 days at 20 °C. The results showed that melatonin treatments (0.01, 0.05, 0.1 mM) delayed CI, ion leakage, chlorophyll losses and the increases in total phenolic content and hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidant activities in cherimoya peel for 2 weeks with respect to controls. In addition, the increases in total soluble solids and titratable acidity in flesh tissue were also delayed in melatonin-treated fruit, and there was also reduced firmness loss compared with the control, the highest effects being found for the 0.05 mM dose. This treatment led to maintenance of fruit quality traits and to increases in the storage time up to 21 days, 14 days more than the control fruit. Thus, melatonin treatment, especially at 0.05 mM concentration, could be a useful tool to decrease CI damage in cherimoya fruit, with additional effects on retarding postharvest ripening and senescence processes and on maintaining quality parameters. These effects were attributed to a delay in the climacteric ethylene production, which was delayed for 1, 2 and 3 weeks for 0.01, 0.1 and 0.05 mM doses, respectively. However, the effects of melatonin on gene expression and the activity of the enzymes involved in ethylene production deserves further research.

Abstract
Flowering Chinese cabbage is prone to withering, yellowing and deterioration after harvest. Melatonin plays a remarkable role in delaying leaf senescence and increasing flavonoid biosynthesis. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of melatonin procrastinating postharvest senescence by regulating flavonoid biosynthesis remain largely unknown. In this study, melatonin could promote flavonoid accumulation and delay the postharvest senescence of flowering Chinese cabbage. Surprisingly, we observed that BrFLS1 and BrFLS3.2 were core contributors in flavonoid biosynthesis, and BrERF2 and BrERF109 were crucial ethylene response factors (ERFs) through the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) technique, which is involved in regulating the postharvest senescence under melatonin treatment. Furthermore, yeast one-hybrid (Y1H), dual luciferase (LUC), and β-glucuronidase (GUS) tissue staining experiments demonstrated that BrERF2/BrERF109 negatively regulated the transcripts of BrFLS1 and BrFLS3.2 by directly binding to their promoters, respectively. Silencing BrERF2/BrERF109 significantly upregulated the transcripts of BrFLS1 and BrFLS3.2, promoting flavonoid accumulation, and postponing the leaf senescence. Our results provided a new insight into the molecular regulatory network of melatonin delaying leaf senescence and initially ascertained that melatonin promoted flavonoid accumulation by suppressing the inhibition of BrERF2/BrERF109 on the transcripts of BrFLS1 and BrFLS3.2, which led to delaying the leaf senescence of postharvest flowering Chinese cabbage.

Abstract
Melatonin, a tryptophan-derived molecule, is endogenously generated in animal, plant, fungal and prokaryotic cells. Given its antioxidant properties, it is involved in a myriad of signaling functions associated with various aspects of plant growth and development. In higher plants, melatonin (Mel) interacts with plant regulators such as phytohormones, as well as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It shows great potential as a biotechnological tool to alleviate biotic and abiotic stress, to delay senescence and to conserve the sensory and nutritional quality of postharvest horticultural products which are of considerable economic importance worldwide. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biochemistry of Mel, whose endogenous induction and exogenous application can play an important biotechnological role in enhancing the marketability and hence earnings from postharvest horticultural crops.

Abstract
Fruits and vegetables contain numerous nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, phenolic compounds, and dietary fibers. They reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and the risk of certain chronic diseases, and improve the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity. Moreover, melatonin was found in various fruits and vegetables species. Melatonin acts as a multifunctional compound to participate in various physiological processes. In recent years, many advances have been found that melatonin is also appraised as a key modulator on the fruits and vegetables post-harvest preservation. Fruits and vegetables post-harvest usually elicit reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and accumulation. Excess ROS stimulate cell damage, protein structure destruction, and tissue aging, and thereby reducing their quality. Numerous studies find that exogenous application of melatonin modulates ROS homeostasis by regulating the antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants systems. Further evidences reveal that melatonin often interacts with hormones and other signaling molecules, such as ROS, nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and etc. Among these 'new' molecules, crosstalks of melatonin and ROS, especially the H2O2 produced by RBOHs, are provided in fruits and vegetables post-harvest preservation in this review. It will provide reference for complicated integration of both melatonin and ROS as signal molecules in future study.

Abstract
Melatonin is a multifunctional molecule that has been widely discovered in most plants. An increasing number of studies have shown that melatonin plays essential roles in plant growth and stress tolerance. It has been extensively applied to alleviate the harmful effects of abiotic stresses. In view of its role in regulating aspects of plant growth and development, we ponder and summarize the scientific discoveries about seed germination, root development, flowering, fruit maturation, and senescence. Under abiotic and biotic stresses, melatonin brings together many pathways to increase access to treatments for the symptoms of plants and to counteract the negative effects. It has the capacity to tackle regulation of the redox, plant hormone networks, and endogenous melatonin. Furthermore, the expression levels of several genes and the contents of diverse secondary metabolites, such as polyphenols, terpenoids, and alkaloids, were significantly altered. In this review, we intend to examine the actions of melatonin in plants from a broader perspective, explore the range of its physiological functions, and analyze the relationship between melatonin and other metabolites and metabolic pathways.

Abstract
Introduction Exogenous melatonin (EMT) application has been used to reduce postharvest senescence and improve the quality and antioxidant enzyme activities of papaya fruits during cold storage. Methods The effects of exogenous melatonin application (1. 5 mM) were investigated on papaya fruits during cold storage (10°C ± 2°C) for 28 days in the present study. Results and discussion The EMT treatment delayed postharvest senescence significantly with lower maturing status compared with untreated papaya fruits (control). In addition, EMT treatment maintained substantially higher titratable acidity values and ascorbic acid content but significantly lower soluble solids content and lower weight loss compared with the untreated fruits. Concerning the antioxidant capacity, the EMT-treated papaya fruit exhibited markedly higher total phenolic content and, consequently, higher DPPH-radical scavenging activity than the control group. The EMT treatment not only kept a higher enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase but also significantly inhibited the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde, along with satisfying sensory attributes. Conclusion The findings of this study indicated that EMT application could be commercially used as an eco-friendly strategy to reduce postharvest senescence and maintain the fresh-like quality traits of papaya fruit during cold storage.

Abstract
Nanoselenium (nano-Se) foliar application is crucial for enhancing plant health. However, the mechanism by which nano-Se biofortification promotes the nutritional components of Siraitia grosvenorii remains unclear. In this study, nano-Se foliar application increased the carbohydrate and amino acid contents, including glucose (23.6%), fructose (39.7%), sucrose (60.6%), tryptophan (104.5%), glycine (85.9%), tyrosine (78.4%), phenylalanine (60.1%), glutamic acid (63.4%), and proline (52.5%). Nano-Se application enhanced apigenin (3.8 times), syringic acid (0.7 times), and 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxycinnamic acid (1.4 times) of the phenylpropane biosynthesis pathways. Importantly, the SgCDS (31.1%), CYP-P450 (39.1%), and UGT (24.6%) were induced by nano-Se, which enhanced the mogroside V content (16.2%). Compared to the control, nano-Se treatment dramatically enhanced aromatic substances, including 2-butanone (51.9%), methylpropanal (146.3%), n-nonanal dimer (141.7%), pentanal (52.5%), and 2-pentanone (46.0%). In summary, nano-Se improves S. grosvenorii quality by increasing nutrients and volatile organic compounds and adjusting the phenylpropane pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Blueberry is considered as a 'functional food' because it contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins and anthocyanins. The blueberry is one of the most consumed berries in the world and is highly appreciated by consumers because of its unique taste and sensory properties. Fresh blueberries decay rapidly because of mould and water loss. To preserve the qualitative and nutraceutical traits of fresh highbush blueberries during storage, the efficacy of 1 mm melatonin treatment was investigated at 5 °C for 3 weeks. RESULTS The results demonstrated that melatonin treatment reduced weight loss and delayed postharvest ripening. Compared to the control, melatonin treatment induced an overproduction of polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and ascorbic acid, consequently increasing antioxidant activity. The enzymatic antioxidant system was also affected by the treatment. An increase in the activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase was observed in treated fruit compared to that in control fruit. Enzymatic browning, controlled by assaying the content of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide, polyphenol oxidase, guaiacol peroxidase and lipoxygenase activities, appeared to slow down under melatonin treatment. CONCLUSION Melatonin coating is a valid tool for delaying the perishability and qualitative decay of highbush blueberry fruit during cold storage. Furthermore, this treatment increases the production of secondary metabolites such as polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins and ascorbic acid, improving the nutraceutical traits of this fruit during storage. Melatonin treatment can be considered as an environmentally sustainable, non-harmful-to-human-health alternative for the postharvest preservation of highbush blueberry fruit. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Changes in quality attributes, ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle, and melatonin (MLT) synthesis were evaluated in cherry tomato fruit treated with MLT solution at 0.1 mM during storage at room temperature for 16 days. According to the results, the MLT treatment was beneficial to maintaining fruit quality as indicated by the declines in weight loss, fruit decay, and titratable acid (TA), accompanied by the maintenance of fruit firmness, total soluble solids (TSS) as well as TSS/TA ratio. Also, the MLT treatment not only effectively inhibited oxidative damage via reducing relative electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde content, but also improved antioxidant capacity via stimulating AsA-GSH cycle. Moreover, the MLT treatment promoted endogenous MLT synthesis by upregulating the expressions of biosynthetic genes consisting of SlTDC, SlT5H, SlSNAT, and SlASMLT. Thus, our results suggested that the MLT treatment might be involved in maintaining quality in cherry tomato fruit during room temperature by promoting antioxidant capacity and enhancing endogenous MLT. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: As a typical climacteric fruit, cherry tomato fruit ripen rapidly and are easily infected by various pathogenic fungi during storage under ambient conditions, which leads to short storage life and a decrease in economic value. The results showed that the application of MLT maintained cherry tomato quality via improving antioxidant capacities and enhancing endogenous MLT. Therefore, MLT treatment could become a promising postharvest strategy for quality maintenance in cherry tomatoes during room storage.

Abstract
Melatonin (MT) is a ubiquitous hormone molecule that is commonly distributed in nature. MT not only plays an important role in animals and humans but also has extensive functions in plants. Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for animals and humans, and is a beneficial element in higher plants at low concentrations. Postharvest diseases caused by fungal pathogens lead to huge economic losses worldwide. In this study, tomato fruits were treated with an optimal sodium selenite (20 mg/L) and melatonin (10 μmol/L) 2 h and were stored for 7 days at room temperature simulating shelf life, and the synergistic effects of Se and MT collectively called Se-Mel on gray mold decay in tomato fruits by Botrytis cinerea was investigated. MT did not have antifungal activity against B. cinerea in vitro, while Se significantly inhibited gray mold development caused by B. cinerea in tomatoes. However, the interaction of MT and Se showed significant inhibition of the spread and growth of the disease, showing the highest control effect of 74.05%. The combination of MT with Se treatment enhanced the disease resistance of fruits by improving the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), as well as increasing the gene expression level of pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins. Altogether, our results indicate that the combination of MT and Se would induce the activation of antioxidant enzymes and increase the expression of PR proteins genes that might directly enhance the resistance in tomato fruit against postharvest pathogenic fungus B. cinerea.

Abstract
At postharvest, fruits have a short shelf life. Recently, there has been much literature on the effects of melatonin on the postharvest quality of horticultural crops. However, reports of various findings comprise mixed claims and product-specific conclusions. Therefore, a meta-analysis systematically dissects the comprehensive effect on several fruits. In this meta-analysis, standard mean difference (SMD) was adopted using a random-effect model. The study used 36 articles and isolated 24 indicator parameters of postharvest quality and antioxidant properties based on the inclusion criteria. As exhibited in the forest plot, melatonin reduced chilling injury, weight loss, respiration rate, and ethylene content (SMD -0.90, 95% CI [-1.14, -0.65]; I2 = 81%; p < .00001). Similarly, the application of melatonin significantly suppressed electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, lipoxygenase, and polyphenol oxidase (SMD -0.89, 95% CI [-1.09, -0.69]; I2 = 70%; p < .00001). In addition, exogenous melatonin application induced endogenous melatonin content, phenolic content, and flavonoid and anthocyanin contents (SMD 1.15, 95% CI [0.91, 1.39]; I2 = 71%; p = .01). Moreover, melatonin treatment enhanced antioxidant activities (catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyse) (SMD 1.37, 95% CI [1.03, 1.71]; I2 = 86%; p < .00001). Thus, in the whole study, the overall effect was significantly high in treated fruit (p < .0001), and the overall heterogeneity was above (I2 ) > 70%. In addition, the funnel plot showed symmetry in the most selected studies. To sum up, the result gives a further understanding of melatonin's capabilities in reducing postharvest losses and maintaining the quality of fresh fruits.

Abstract
Papaya fruit is widely grown in tropical regions because of its sweet taste, vibrant color, and the huge number of health benefits it provides. Melatonin is an essential hormone that governs many plants′ biological processes. In the current study, the impact of melatonin on fruit ripening and deterioration in postharvest papaya fruit was explored. An optimum melatonin dose (400 μmol L−1, 2 h) was found to be effective in delaying fruit softening and reducing anthracnose incidence. Melatonin enhanced antioxidant activity and decreased fruit oxidative injury by lowering superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde content by enhancing the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and by improving the antioxidant capacity of papaya fruit. Melatonin increased catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, NADH oxidase, glutathione reductase, polyphenol oxidase, superoxide dismutase, and peroxidase activity, as well as induced total phenol, total flavonoid, and ascorbic acid accumulation. Melatonin also enhanced the activity of defense-related enzymes, such as chitinase, 4-coumaric acid-CoA-ligase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase, while it repressed lipid metabolism. Additionally, melatonin inhibited the development of anthracnose in vitro and in vivo. These findings suggest that exogenous melatonin application improves papaya fruit quality by boosting antioxidant and defense-related mechanisms.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to identify the role of hydrogen water (HW) in banana fruit ripening. Banana fruit soaked with 0.8 ppm HW showed longer ripening than control fruit. HW treatment significantly reduced ethylene production and respiratory rate, and inhibited the expressions of ethylene synthesis- and signaling-related genes. Similarly, HW treatment inhibited the down-regulation of chlorophylls binding proteins and delayed the increase of chromaticity a*, b* and L* in banana peel. Furthermore, HW-treated peel exhibited lower expressions of cell wall degradation-related genes and higher levels of fruit firmness, pectin, hemicellulose and lignin. In addition, HW-treated pulp exhibited higher levels of starch, lower level of total soluble solids (TSS) and lower expression of flavor-related genes. Microstructural observation further confirmed that HW treatment delayed the degradations of starch and cell walls. Those results indicated that HW treatment delayed banana ripening via the role of ethylene in relation to degreening, flavor and softening.

Abstract
In this investigation, the combinations of exogenous pretreatment (melatonin or vitamin C) and contact ultrasound-assisted air drying were utilized to dry broccoli florets. To understand the influences of the studied dehydration methods on the conversion of glucoraphanin to bioactive sulforaphane in broccoli, various components (like glucoraphanin, sulforaphane, myrosinase, etc.) and factors (temperature and moisture) involved in the metabolism pathway were analyzed. The results showed that compared with direct air drying, the sequential exogenous pretreatment and contact ultrasound drying shortened the drying time by 19.0-22.7%. Meanwhile, contact sonication could promote the degradation of glucoraphanin. Both melatonin pretreatment and vitamin C pretreatment showed protective effects on the sulforaphane content and myrosinase activity during the subsequent drying process. At the end of drying, the sulforaphane content in samples dehydrated by the sequential melatonin (or vitamin C) pretreatment and ultrasound-intensified drying was 14.4% (or 26.5%) higher than only air-dried samples. The correlation analysis revealed that the exogenous pretreatment or ultrasound could affect the enzymatic degradation of glucoraphanin and the generation of sulforaphane through weakening the connections of sulforaphane-myrosinase, sulforaphane-VC, and VC-myrosinase. Overall, the reported results can enrich the biochemistry knowledge about the transformation of glucoraphanin to sulforaphane in cruciferous vegetables during drying, and the combined VC/melatonin pretreatment and ultrasound drying is conducive to protect bioactive sulforaphane in dehydrated broccoli.

Abstract
Guava fruit has a short postharvest shelf life at room temperature. Melatonin is widely used for preservation of various postharvest fruit and vegetables. In this study, an optimal melatonin treatment (600 μmol·L−1, 2 h) was identified, which effectively delayed fruit softening and reduced the incidence of anthracnose on guava fruit. Melatonin effectively enhanced the antioxidant capacity and reduced the oxidative damage to the fruit by reducing the contents of superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde; improving the overall antioxidant capacity and enhancing the enzymatic antioxidants and non-enzymatic antioxidants. Melatonin significantly enhanced the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase. The contents of total flavonoids and ascorbic acid were maintained by melatonin. This treatment also enhanced the defense-related enzymatic activities of chitinase and phenylpropanoid pathway enzymes, including phenylalanine ammonia lyase and 4-coumaric acid-CoA-ligase. The activities of lipase, lipoxygenase and phospholipase D related to lipid metabolism were repressed by melatonin. These results showed that exogenous melatonin can maintain the quality of guava fruit and enhance its resistance to disease by improving the antioxidant and defense systems of the fruit.

Abstract
Postharvest quality of litchi reduces rapidly during storage at room temperature. This study aimed to investigate the effect of melatonin treatment on postharvest quality and oxidative stress markers of litchi fruit during cold storage. The "Feizixiao" litchi was treated with melatonin solution concentrations of 0.2 and 0.6 mmol·L-1 and then stored at 4°C for 12 days. The results confirmed that the melatonin treatment effectively maintained the appearance and color of the litchi fruit, suppressed the peel browning, and improved the litchi quality. The treatment also significantly enhanced the levels of endogenous melatonin, antioxidant components (total phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanin), and antioxidant enzyme activities of the fruit. It also inhibited the other oxidative stress markers, such as O 2 - , H2O2, MDA, and protein carbonyl content, and upregulated the expressions of antioxidant and Msr-related genes. Correlation and principal component analyses further confirmed that the melatonin treatment effectively delayed the fruit senescence by enhancing the antioxidant enzyme activities and modulating peel browning and reactive oxygen species metabolism of the litchi fruit via regulating gene expression of the related enzymes (SOD and PPO). These findings suggested that the exogenous application of melatonin to litchi during the postharvest is an ideal way to preserve the fruit quality and delay fruit senescence.

Abstract
Melatonin has been reported to have an important role in fruit ripening, although the effect of pre-harvest melatonin treatment on sweet cherry quality properties during storage is still unknown. In the present experiments, the effects of melatonin (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 Mm) by foliar spray treatments of 'Prime Giant' and 'Sweet Heart' sweet cherry trees on fruit quality traits and antioxidants systems during storage was evaluated. Results showed that these treatments reduced weight losses during storage, as well as losses in firmness and titratable acidity. In addition, changes in fruit colour and total soluble solid content were also delayed in fruit from melatonin treated trees with respect to controls. Moreover, in general, total phenolic and anthocyanin concentrations were higher in fruit from treated trees than in those from control ones, either at harvest or during the whole storage period. Finally, the activity of the antioxidant enzymes catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase was also enhanced as a consequence of melatonin treatment. Overall results show that pre-harvest melatonin treatment delayed the post-harvest ripening process of sweet cherry fruit, leading to maintenance of their quality properties in optimum levels for consumption 2 weeks more with respect to fruit from control trees. Antioxidant systems, both enzymatic and non-enzymatic ones, were also enhanced by melatonin treatments, which would account for the delay on fruit post-harvest ripening process and fruit quality maintenance during storage.

Abstract
This review contains the regulatory mechanisms of plant hormones in the ripening process of climacteric and non-climacteric fruits, interactions between plant hormones and future research directions. The fruit ripening process involves physiological and biochemical changes such as pigment accumulation, softening, aroma and flavor formation. There is a great difference in the ripening process between climacteric fruits and non-climacteric fruits. The ripening of these two types of fruits is affected by endogenous signals and exogenous environments. Endogenous signaling plant hormones play an important regulatory role in fruit ripening. This paper systematically reviews recent progress in the regulation of plant hormones in fruit ripening, including ethylene, abscisic acid, auxin, jasmonic acid (JA), gibberellin, brassinosteroid (BR), salicylic acid (SA) and melatonin. The role of plant hormones in both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits is discussed, with emphasis on the interaction between ethylene and other adjustment factors. Specifically, the research progress and future research directions of JA, SA and BR in fruit ripening are discussed, and the regulatory network between JA and other signaling molecules remains to be further revealed. This study is meant to expand the understanding of the importance of plant hormones, clarify the hormonal regulation network and provide a basis for targeted manipulation of fruit ripening.

Abstract
Postharvest melatonin treatments have been reported to improve the quality and storability, especially to inhibit browning in many fruits, but the effect had not been systematically investigated on longan fruit. In this study, the effect of 0.4 mM melatonin (MLT) dipping on the quality and pericarp browning of longan fruits stored at low temperature was investigated. The MLT treatment did not influence the TSS content of longan fruits but lead to increased lightness and h° value while decreased a* value of pericarp. More importantly, the treatment significantly delayed the increase in electrolyte leakage and malonaldehyde accumulation, inhibited the activities of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase, and thus retarded pericarp browning. In addition, the treatment significantly inhibited the production of O2 •- and H2O2 while promoted the accumulation of glutathione, flavonoids, and phenolics at earlier storage stages in longan pericarp. Interestingly, the activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly upregulated but activities of catalase were downregulated in the MLT-treated longan pericarp. MLT treatment effectively enhanced APX and SOD activities, increased flavonoid, phenolics, and glutathione content, protected cytomembrane integrity, inhibited the production of O2 •- and H2O2 and browning-related enzymes, and thus delayed the longan pericarp browning.

Abstract
The effect of melatonin pomegranate tree treatments on fruit quality and bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity at harvest and during storage at 10 °C for 60 days was assayed in two consecutive years, 2019 and 2020. In the first year, trees were treated with 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 mM of melatonin along the developmental fruit growth cycle, and results showed that bioactive compounds (total phenolics and total and individual anthocyanins) and antioxidant activity at harvest were higher in fruits from melatonin-treated trees than in controls. Other fruit quality parameters, such as firmness, total soluble solids and aril red colour, were also increased as a consequence of melatonin treatment. In fruit from control tress, firmness and acidity levels decreased during storage, while increases occurred on total soluble solids, leading to fruit quality reductions. These changes were delayed, and even maintenance of total acidity was observed, in fruit from melatonin-treated trees with respect to controls, resulting in a fruit shelf-life increase. Moreover, concentration of phenolics and anthocyanins and antioxidant activity were maintained at higher levels in treated than in control fruits during the whole storage period. In general, all the mentioned effects were found at the highest level with the 0.1 mM melatonin dose, and then it was selected for repeating the experiment in the second year and results of the first year were confirmed. Thus, 0.1 mM melatonin treatment could be a useful tool to enhance aril content on bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity and health beneficial effects and to improve quality traits of pomegranate fruit, at harvest and during postharvest storage.
